Miller confirmed at Derby

Derby County have confirmed the signing of Kenny Miller from Celtic on a three year contract in a deal reported to be worth up to £3m.

Kenny became a popular player at Celtic Park largely as a result of his attitude and perma-active football, however, Celtic need their strikers to score goals, lots of them, and eight in his first season at the club were not enough to keep him in the first team.

Playing against deep lying defences each week allowed him no opportunity to use his pace, something that he is likely to find in his favour at Derby.

Good luck Kenny, your first goal at Celtic will remain in the memory for some time.

    Paul67,

Sopt on with your summation of Kenny Miller's time with us. A great tryer but not good enough as a striker to be the Celtic number 9. I wish him luck in what will probably be a relegation fight at Derby.

Of course that number 9 jersey is now vacant. Is there someone lined up to fill it?

Miller for 3 mill is superb business....as long as you have someone to replace him. He's come off the bench at Falkirk and Aberdeen and played a significant role in winning the matches. Zurawski ain't goin' to do that and the reluctance to let Riordan near the pitch says it all.

Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but regarding Platini's plans for Cup winners gaining access to the CL.

Had this plan been in place last season, how many of us would have preferred to lose the Cup Final to Dunfermline.

It would have meant no place in the CL for rangers, therefore probably no Cuellar etc.

Also,we would have received all of the TV money - around £2m extra due to Dunfermlines certain early exit in the qualifiers.

I could see teams from all over Europe deliberately losing their Cup Final to deny their rivals CL cash.

surely we didnt sell him with no replacement, Skippy and Killen were in before we sold Beattie and now Miller.

The question is have we replaced them with better?

We probably wont know for sure til the season is at or approaching the buisness end but what we do know for sure is that even if things are sort of even or only slightly improved on the playing front we've made a healthy profit

2 strikers out for £4 mil
    2 in for 700k

Bhoy Molloy, I reckon spend has been around £7m, net spend now considerably less – but don’t go ranting at me! I have heard it all during the years we were spending £63m and taking in £13m.

Uncle Len, I have heard we are pursuing a couple of deals, but was given no guarantees.

Gordon J, someone to replace Kenny, are you on the radar?

Heraldo, we signed two strikers already this summer, McDonald is the replacement for Kenny.

Who really cares about the bank balance when we seem to be loosing a player without any replacement?

Miller is an ideal CL player as witnessed last year against Benfica. OK, I'll admit he had a stinker away to Copenhagen but that was down to his lack of confidence, something that seems to have returned lately.

Don't understand this unless we have a quality replacement in place.

If we have then just announce it instead of all this cloak and dagger guff.

Don't necessarily agree that the squad is weakend.

    £3 million for a Bosman, it's perfect.

Majic will be 12th man behind McDonald and JVoH and Deek moves up the pecking order too.

You do not worry about whether we have spent more than the Govan crew. As long as we have the quality we will prevail. They're playnig catch up remember...how many of their 12/13 signings do you think will improve our squad or walk into our team??

PL and WGS I have no doubt are continuing to work on deals...nothing to back this up but if its not by midnight...we will get the right player, at the right price at the right time.

That said we know where we need to reinforce and get cover so too do PL and WGS.

    Keep the Faith.

It's beginning to look like there will be no new strikers added to the squad.

I assume that, according to rumour last night, with Riordan turning down a move back to Hibs and Zurawski staying to "fight for his place", we were top heavy up front, ( nae sniggers).

With Miller unhappy about his playing prospects and having a value, it seems that he was the obvious choice to go.

I had hoped that the Riordan plus cash for Murphy and Maloney (or Naismith) in, would be a goer.

Who knows, plenty of time yet, but I hae ma doots. Somebody has usually leaked or spotted something by now.

Somebody mentioned Mooning Fleck earlier. Total A... at Ibrox, but a fine player at Norwich.

At that time, RTE showed a lot of English football and Norwich were a good team to watch, Townsend et al.

The one who made Fleck look good was none other than a young Chris Sutton, who fed him a diet of scoring opportunities and Fleck scored for fun.

When Chris left, Robert was good for Fleck all.

We need one for th CL along with a centre half and another wide player.

Trying not to get too down after such a good week but we've got money,we need plyers and if we dont sign them then at midnight tonight this seasons going to look a whole lot tougher.

    £2.75m?

Good luck to Kenny Miller. I really wanted him to do well but it didn't quite happen.

I will be very dissapointed if, as seems likely, there are no last minute signings. In the last 44 hours we have raised a minimum of £7M from group stage qualification, £3M from Kenny Miller's sale and freed up approximately £60K per week in tranfers which translates to £3M per annum. We have the basis of a good side, but while we have an outstanding goalie and a good midfield, we clearly lack quality in defence (particularly at both full back positions) and would also greatly benefit from a quality striker.

I don't understand the point of salivating over our financial results. Surely this is only a good thing because it allows us to strengthen our squad. Other than major shareholders, who cares otherwise, unless there is a danger of going bust which their clearly isn't.

The board won't take the flak they deserve for this because of the feelgood factor after Wednesday - a gamble which just paid off. This is the third consecutive transfer window where I have felt the board are not matching the ambitions of the fans.

I think 2 in (McDonald, Killen) one out (Beattie) and now Miller is a bit simplistic. Zurawski has reached the end of his shelf life, and Riordan has, well, issues. That combined with JVoH's unimpressive performances of recent and I conclude that we are weakened. As for teams that sit deep, well Aberdeen 2nd half would fall into that category. Furthermore, our CL opponents are unlikely to follow such a pattern. Neither are the buoyant Dark Side. I concede we have been spoiled in the past (Pierre, Cadete, Larsson, Sutton, Hartson) but we now have the weakest strike force I can recall.

I think the time is right and we should speculate.

I think we are capable of finishing second in the group with luck and by avoiding injuries. However looking at the bench against Spartak i would only be confident with Sno. (Miller too but he's gone now)

What if scenarios - pick 2-3 players who, if they picked up knocks would not be replaced by similar quality and experience - this worries me (eg Dounbe, Caddis, Odea..)

Too many times in the past Celtic has been in a position of strengh and failed to add the final pieces to forge a truly great team.

I hope this is the time we add quality and go into this group with much more confidence.

i'd be happy with defensive minded players and a pacey replacement for Kenny.

Finally, Good luck Kenny - I appreciated your attitide and team efforts and wish you all the best with the rams

For what it's worth, I really can't see TG an KM going out the door and no-one coming in. Our business hinged on CL qualification. Had we not qualified, KM would have stayed. As it is, the 3m plus TG's wages will surely be re-invested today.

A couple of "back up" strikers signed ? Does that mean JVoH and Zurawski are first choice ? If so, its no wonder I was reading reports of Shaktar's confidence.

I think in the club's eyes, one of the 2 main aims of the season has already been achieved - qualification for CL group stages. If we perform and punch above our weight that will be seen as a bonus. I find that disappointing. A penalty box striker and a left back would make us a team to be fearful of. With no recognised predator and a weakness at left back, we become fearful.

According to Clyde Bobo refused to move to Sunderland. Assuming his wage was more or less matched, I'm very dissapointed with him, although he should never have been given the £32K per week deal, one of the few things I will criticise MON for. Says a lot for Bobo's footballing ambitions. Assuming he plans on seeing out his contract, who will want to sign him at the end of next season after two and a half years without first team football? Short sighted unambitios mercenary.

Have to say that I'm sorry to see Miller go, but obviously it's up to the player himself whether he stays and proves he's worth a place or goes to guarantee first team football, even if it is in a relegation fight. Ultimately, £3m back for a bosman is good business.
I do not for one second believe that Gordon and PL are not trying to get identified targets in. I have faith that both men know exactly what the supports ambitions are and that they are doing their utmost to deliver.
As for this net spend nonsense again.... if, as some believe, all the board care about is balancing the books then the reputed bid for Skoosh would have been snapped up in a heartbeat.
Just over 5 hours to go, a quality left back please, and another striker to give big Jan something to worry about.

Dissapointed to see Kenny go at this stage - not always effective but did offer genuine pace up front (something we don't really have) - albeit it would have been from the bench - which is no bad thing against tired legs!
Started the campaign brightly too - I would've held on until January when some of the clubs in the EPL looking at relegation might have been tempted to bid slightly more and we knew where we were with regards europe.

It does strangely feel as if we've weakened the squad - never thought I'd hear myself say that after some of KM's performances last season.........but there is still a few hours left.

    Good luck at Derby Kenny!

Not sure we should worry about how much we have spent NET. (12mil for Tore Andre Flop anyone?) but rather on how much (or little) we have improved our squad.

Personally i feel we really really need some quality defenders in, and not just full backs! and a quality 20+ striker, i'm happy with midfield although the loss of Lenny and shift to the much more attack minded midfield reinforces the reasons why we should really really have improved the defence

    Total 5.25m

    6.75m - 5.25m = £1.5m spent this summer ?

declan : good point about the defence. Before that incredible game on Wednesday, I felt that PL/WGS had taken a massive gamble on our CL qualification. You can't get much closer to high risk than we did on Wednesday night!

I'll be amazed if we don't have some serious "irons in the fire" tonight. Although, we've got quality youngsters coming through in Evander, Teddy & Darren, we need an experienced striker and defender.

It's not just about adjusting our CL ambitions to suit for this season, the SPL winners this year go straight into the CL group stages next year.
That's more important to me than however many-in-a-row!

Kenny was not an automatic starter, although he did start scoring. As for Tommy G it simply did not work. Would rather try and get in a couple that will do better.

And don't get hung up about the money...the biscuit tin mentally has gone.

Maybe its because we are 4 and a half hours fromthe window losing but....

We have lost a very effective striker - perhaps not an out and out goalscorer - but nonetheless a good striker and excellent in Europe and would have proved to be good this season as we have more pace in midfield so he would have got the ball a lot earlier.

    Follow that - with

2 Full backs who are not good enough to be at the club - with little back up (a guy who we didn't want at the end of the season even though he won us a cup)

A centre halve guaranteed to play every week even though there are better player on the bench and in the stand...

A lumbering giant who is currently unfit but still playing and did the same last season after a good start.

    Only the midfield look impressive!

Please please go and sign some players and spend the alledged £10 million kitty!

I will not be disappointed if we sign no one tonight. I would have liked a few players in but I wouldn't want us to sign anyone for the sake of it. EDB : take your point re next season CL qualification.

With regards to our net spend this summer, which is now not even remotely close to £7M, I wouldn't have minded if the club had turned round and said that they were completely paying for Lennoxtown while reducing debt.

Of course, they wouldn't as they can't even fill the stadium as it is for run-of-the-mill league games. We all saw the empty seats appearing last season and it was fairly evident at the opening game against the Ayrshire Huns.

Disappointing, but we need to be faithful through and through and trust in the long-term strategy.

Captain-2, if I find out what happened I will let you know.

Bryce Curdy, the club have not paid a discretionary dividend in since Fergus took over, why would you suggest they are now going to do so with you season book money? Debt has also quadrupled under the DD regime, despite two share issues.

I know we all want to see more players, but you and me do not know what is going on, who they are trying to sign if anyone, so why try to impose a theory that does not fit with past practises?

It’s easy signing world class players for Celtic, just ask the guy next door, but don’t ask PL or Gordon Strachan.

Jimtim, irrespective of the qualities of Wilson and Naylor, I think we need more cover than just Doumbe. No idea if there is anyone pushing from the youth teams.

On the positive side, if we sign no one at least we will hear from some of the people who have been busy on other projects for the last couple of weeks.

I reckon that you are right, not much (if anything) will happen tonight regarding inbounds.

I reckon that for both us and the currant buns, numero uno objective for the season was achieved by qualifying for the CL - spending gratuitous sums after the event probably seems a bit pointless as we arne't going to win the thing.

There will be a bit of a joust in the league between us and them till the end of the year to see who noses in front - then I would expect a bit of money to be spent in January to secure the league on the assumption that it is still relatively close.

Hope I am wrong - and sadly I know I will still be hitting the refresh key at midnight.

Over half a century of following Celtic through thick and thin, lean and fat tends to mellow one's perspective.

NOT a board member, just a pragmatist who believes that the board has the good of the club at heart, and that we have been active in identifying targets who may or may not wish to join us.

I don't think having 2 or 3 or whatever millions we get for Miller m
