Pass the test Celtic, we expect no less

The middle of August is not a great time to have to face such an important game, but if you are a Celtic player – or manager – you should live for these occasions. Our Summer Cup Final is a chance for the players to do something great, something which will be recalled for the rest of their career.

I know the draw could have been better; Spartak are a good team, the artificial pitch is a disadvantage, as is having to play a team who are midseason, but these facts merely set the scene for a Celtic European adventure.

From time to time we must test ourselves and this is one such occasion. Pass the test Celtic, we expect no less.

Poor Peter Risdale.

Not only does he have to avoid many parts of Yorkshire, his welcome in Wales looks in some doubt. Having “lived the dream” at Leeds United, he is now chairman of Cardiff City, but events took a decidedly familiar turn yesterday.

Langston Corporation, who are owed £24m by Cardiff City, initiated legal proceedings against the club. Lasgston’s solicitors issued a statement saying: "Hextalls LLP acts for Langston, the principal financial backers of Cardiff City Football Club.

"Our client's claim is that this sum [£24m] is due for payment now as a result of the club's inability to meet certain deadlines as well as breaching the terms of its loan agreement in respect of the capital sum plus interest.

"The club's board has also been advised by us that its recently submitted accounts for the year ending May 2006 do not reflect its true financial position.

"The situation has been compounded by the fact that for three months the club's chairman ignored repeated communications regarding the seriousness of the financial situation.”

Never known to be short of a word, Peter Risdale’s response to this one ranks among my favourite all time football quotes: “The new board of Cardiff City Football Club and Cardiff City Council have for some time been trying to identify who Langston is and have continually come up against a brick wall. Far from refusing to talk to them, we don't know who they are.”

The man actually admitted that he does not know who his club's principle financial backers are – and this is his version of events.

Poor Cardiff City.

the last two transfer windows have been cost neutral exercises for Celtic. This one we have spent 4.5 million on the back of a last 16 CL place and record turnover.
I think this qualifies as frugal although we're all entitled to our opinion.

Its not an excuse to complain about how difficult it is to sign players. We've known about the qualifier for over a year now and if targets have not been aquired by now then the planning and execution of our football plan has failed.

Other teams seem to manage it ok.

I'll ask a straight question. How many people on here expected Celtic to spend more than 4.5 million in advanvce of one of the most important games of the year.

    thats the team for me

    I'll go 2-2

Peter Risdale, I would rather have Sir Murky himself running Celtic than that man, after what he done to Leeds (I don't even like Leeds) he should never have got another job/role in football......I like how he blames everyone else apart from himself.

PS, Is Noel over in Moscow? I got a one of them text messages yesterday morning from him.

Must confess to feeling very nervous today.

We must make a good start, that is vital.

My heart says Spartak 1 Celtic 1, my head is saying Spartak 2 Celtic 0.

An away goal would be fantastic, but if we find ourselves a goal down late on we should be fearful of chasing it and falling further behind.

Michael Collins, I fully expected some of/much of Celtic’s business to take until late August and said so here. At the risk of boring others with repetition:

You can sign players who are not wanted by their club/out of contract early and cheaply. We have signed a couple like this, but few of these players will become first team gems.

You can pay over the odds to sign high calibre players. We done this with Scott Brown, but we cannot do this too often.

You can sign the right calibre players at the right price. This is the way to build a sustainable team, but these players are seldom sold at the right price until late in the transfer window, just as it was for Venegoor last season.

We could have had Capone for free, or Appiah for £40k per week and £5m, or any number of players at the asking price, but these days have to be the exception, not the rule.

I was only asking the question as like you I am a little confused as to what is acceptable/unacceptable to the powers that be. However "Derrys Walls" or as I refered to it"No Surrender" I think makes reference to "King James and all his rebel(Catholic) scum".
Are these the original words to the song or were they bastardised by the "PEEPEL" to carry that all to familiar venemous hate filled rant.
Would you acknowledge that "The Peepel" are now a wee tad short of songs as was evident last night with the schoolboy International atmosphere.

Killerheels :- In the line you mention one word has been changed in recent years, the original line was "King James and all his rebel band", I think the change is stupid and nasty as it in some ways attempts to change a song about your own side into one that attempts a verbal put down of others. However my view has always been that just because something is offensive doesn't mean it should be banned, hence the fact I openly back Celtic fans rights to sing republican songs.
On Rangers songs there are quite a few and I remember singing most of them when I first started attending matches in the sixties, sadly a lot of them fell out of favour in the seventies and early eighties when songs about the UDA gained the upper hand over songs about Rangers this led to a new generation of supporters coming through who knew only a limited number of songs and not many of them about Rangers.. Hopefully this will start to change and the club has attempted to drive this change with the publication of the "blue book" of Rangers songs.

    Marvin,
what about usig Miller and Macdonald, we'll probably sit quite deep whether we want to or not and the two wee guys might be a great option for the counter attack ie. long diagonal balls down either flank stretching their back four with either Skoosh or Donatti or both firing throught the middle to slot home.
I should have been in management.

We should play Hartley wide right, and move Naka into the centre, to play just behind Miller, linking up midfield and attack.

Do you think a lot of the hatred of Celtic fans form Rangers fans is down to a secret admiration for them. I am not trying to be mischievious but I remeber talking to a drunk friend from the other side who admitted this much to me, I think it's the HOOPS. I know it's a difficult question.

Michael Collins i expected us to spend more than £4.5m by now, still think we will sign some more eg Naka arrived after we were put out by Artmedia.

Let me ask you a straightforward question do you think we may have signed players earlier if we had managed to offload Gravesen,Jarosik and Balde by now ?

    Killerheels/EdwardUrsus,Uefa's definition of racism-

"Racism is the belief in the superiorty of a race, religion or ethnic group"

I would contend that the "We arra people" chant is supremasist and therfore racist under Uefa's definition.

I also believe that the Sash is promotional of the Orange Order who are a sectarian organisation and should be banned as well.

Derrys walls ah kin joost about swally.

  • At 15/08/07 12:58, TheLeftWinger said…

    Lenspol,

Worse than being an 'unfamiliar role', i would suggest that it is a role Caldwell has been asked to perform 3-4 times already for Celtic.

In my opinion, he has yet to turn in anything more than a mediocre performance in the holding midfield position.

I think Strachan will go with a middle three (Brown, Donati and Hartley) with one up front.

That one up front could be any from three, however i would hypothesise JVOH, with Naka given authority to roam slightly futher forward and infield than usual.

the guy who told u that celtic fand hatred of rangers was down to admmiration was nonsense.

    he obviously WAS steamin

my gripe rangers is purely down to the fact that you have so many racist and sectarian songs and regularly display a hatred towards anything catholic or irish.

Bobo Balde has been getting monkey noises for years from the rangers fans, and the majority at that. sure they have just about stopped recently.

the last celtic v rangers game at celtic park you had 19 counts of sectarian songs compared to 0 of celticand even mananged to sing about jack mconnels wife as she is catholic.

    again this was the majority

your (rangers) hatred for all things catholic and irish is not welcome in the 21st century and at last the authorities have seen this.

    bottom line is

I will not accept the level of abuse that you direct towards the catholic and irish community in glasgow

and neither will the sfa or uefa

    so

change ur ways or you will be shut down

Killerheels @12.55 :- Sadly I don't think so, the hatred that some Rangers fans have for Celtic fans goes back a lot further and has far deeper and far more depressing reasons than admiration.

TerryO'Neil @12.56 :- I think whoever thought up that definition of racism has some brain cells missing, if he doesn't mind me using him as an example ask WinningGemmel if he feels his faith is the correct one and therefore superior to other religions, I'm sure he would answer yes, I don't see how that makes him racist or sectarian. I would contend that it's impossible to truly follow a religion if you don't feel it's the correct and therefore the superior one.
I can understand you not liking the sash however I don't think that is any reason for it to be banned, Rangers fans may find the song Sean South to be offensive as it's in praise of a member of the IRA that doesn't mean it should be banned. We have no right to go through life without being offended.

From last thread - yep, I'm watching the game from Antibes this afternoon. Weather, at 32C, is as hot as in Moscow, so I'll be there in spirit with the supporters who made the trip :)

I get a good sat picture from Setanta most of the time. Except maybe when there is really heavy rain. Your problem with a weak signal in the afternoons suggest that the dish needs re-aligned.
Only problem channels for me are ITV or BBC late at night in the winter...I'm told it's something to do with the rotation of the earth ?!?!!?
(My dish is 80cm , but a 1M dish should get rid of the probs with BBC1 and ITV).

Would be good to see Toulouse beat Liverpool this afternoon. Elmander, their Swedish striker, scored against Lyon at the weekend and seems to be continuing the form he showed last season. 12mnth agi we could have got him for a song. Now it's £8-10M minumum.

thanks for your comments earlier and congratulations on your team's half-time score/result last night.

I'm half with you on this song thingmy. However the sash and derry's walls will be given much more in the way of tolerance (by duffield and the polis etc) than an Irish republican song of any nature. You know it and so do I.

I'll need to get a hold of this Blue Book of Rangers Songs. NAFOS used to indulge in some blue media so maybe he can put me right.

Are the lyrics in the queen's English ?

Are there pictures for colouring in (nae cups wi big handles though) ?

Are there crayons provided for this purpose - orange, blue, purple and red ?

Is there music provided for the brass and woodwind ensembles ?

TerryO'neill :- I agree with you, almost no one should be hated or abused because of their faith, I say almost no one as I think in some cases people follow a religion so extreme and hate filles (some islamic sects) or so stupid (scientology) that followers are fair game for abuse or mocking.
Abuse of a faith is a different matter and while a football game is not the place for it it is possible to be against a religion or denomination of a religion without being bigoted. I would like to make clear though that it should involve attacks on the tents of the religion not the followers of it.

Egor Titov: I don’t know. Maybe thay way they are playing football is good for us? Maybe they can’t play well football.

Radoslav Kovacs: Teams from Great Britain are very comfortable opponents.

Stanislav Cherchesov ( coach) : I saw many Celtic games, also those from CL. We should count on us. The chances are fifty fifty.

Stipe Pleticosa (keeper): Gordon Strachan is right. He should be affraid about our team.

Again their goalie: The most important thing is do not let them to score the goal.

Not posted much recently but a couple of items caught my attention:

ITD - must either be a Tim at the madam or a lurking hun as no self respecting Celtic supporter would ever hope for any good fortune for that other mob and no self respecting Tim would claim to have the cardigan or duffield as china plates, parcel of Raphael is all it is.

European Cup - today’s game has got me perplexed as we do NOT have a good record in games like this, you can say “what about Ajax” but that was 6 years ago and we caught them cold, the return leg proved that which was 6 year ago next Wednesday, I remember it well as it was also the night my mother’s body was taken to St. Kessogs.

The doubters can point fingers at Bratislava but there was also Basle and Ujpest Doza, a team that we defeated 2-1 away from home in the early seventies just after their winter’s break, two weeks later at Celtic Park we struggled to tie 1-1 with them and that night I thought “widnae like tae get them in the early rounds”, next season we did and were gubbed 3-0 in Hungary.

Let’s also not forget our biggest disappointment in this tournament next to Milan 1970, that was in 1967 yes the same year we celebrated Lisbon, at that time the winners got a bye into the next round, we didn’t as for some reason there was either a country kicked out or a new one joined and so we were forced to play the first round, as I said the only winners up to then to do that, result a loss at home and a tie away and out we went humiliated as the first winners to go out in the first round.

Were there any detractors, of course there were, calls were made to change the side, this was the Lisbon Lions BTW and Pat McMahon who had played junior the season before was added to the first team. Pat incidentally was a late developer as he had been in a seminary and was only signed as he had led Kilsyth Rankers to Junior Cup victory in 1967; Pat never really made it and left for Villa who at that time were in the old 3rd Division.

This is the same season of the Battle of Uruguay and also being dumped out of the Scottish at home in the first round proper by the Pars, we did do a League and League Cup double and as far as I know there were no calls of taxi for the Big Mhan.

Plastic Pitches - for all the weeping and gnashing of teeth over this it was only when it was suggested that JFK might not play as it was the suggested primary reason he did not go on loan to Toronto FC that I realized I had watched a game their on this surface, it was the Under 20 Semi last month between Argentina and Chile, there were thunderstorms all day and into the evening and yet I can’t recall the “grass” being a factor as the skill level was very high as were the emotions. We have the players with skill so let’s forget the lame excuses, if we lose and heavily at that then we’re just not good enough.

On this day the Feast of the Assumption let’s who our Saviour’s mammy looks down kindly on us, or will we regret praying for conversion of Russia.

    Tontine Tim,

I was just about to post on the precedent breaking rule of holders getting a first round bye in the following year's competition.

From memory, I think it was the Yugoslavian team that was kicked out due to their government doing something naughty.

We were then included in the draw and got Dinamo Kiev, with the result as you said.

The thinking behind the bye was to give the holders time to fit in the World Club Championship and perhaps to arrange a "glamour" game to cash in on their success.

    Once again UEFA done us.

Regarding the death of Evening Times sports writer Alan Davidson:

"Celtic manager Gordon Strachan and coach Tommy Burns took time out from preparing for tonight's Champions League tie in Moscow to pay their own tributes to Alan. Alan recorded Tommy's progression from young player arriving at Celtic, to full internationalist and eventually manager.

"Tommy said: 'Big Alan stood for a type of journalism that had to be respected. He was always a good judge and could deliver a neutral viewpoint. He recognised the pressure that goes with being involved with the Old Firm and understood it inside out. Very few people, let alone journalists, can walk the divide, but Alan managed to do that.'

"Gordon Strachan added: 'One thing you could be sure of was that he would speak his mind, and I respected that in him, as did most other people. If he had a point to make, he would make it, no matter what, which made his opinion count.'

"He (Strachan) described sitting talking football with him as 'such a pleasure'.

    TLW,
Depends who your mate got the confirmation from, but I'd still think it's a bit early.

However it would make sense if the pitch is sticky and not conducive to dribbling for Aiden to be dropped. And Hartley is a good bet if Sno is still not quite fit.
McDonald would be another good shout if JVoH has the foot injury that was mentioned on here earlier.

Can I suggest you check your credit card.

I followed this suggestion yesterday after it was first posted.

It seemed to work and to my delight a new away shirt arrived this morning less than 24 hours after ordering.

However my receipt suggested that the cost was £44.10 not £17.65 as the online transaction suggested.

I called my credit card company and they confirmed that £44.10 had been authorised.

Needless to say the shirt has been returned. If I'm going to pay full price I will pay to the club.

I think you will find that Naka was signed before we went out to Artmedia but ineligible to play. My recollection is that he was actually at Fir park on the saturday following the 5-0.

Anyhoo here's hoping for a 'result' tonight.
