Preparedness not an option for Celtic

We are only four days away from phoney football becoming an irrelevant memory once more as Clydesdale Bank Premier League action comes to Celtic Park, but while I am looking forward to the game, I am actually feeling nervous excitement at the prospect of the Champions League draw on Friday.

The financial success of our season, and the contingent consequences this will have on our football achievements, will be determined by these games. It would not be stretching reality too much to regard Champions League money as our disposable income in its entirety.

Celtic must know that preparedness is not an option.

Congratulations to Not The View, who will release their 20th Anniversary issue on Sunday. Ironically season 1987-88, the Centenary Season, became one of the most memorable in our history, but the need for a supporter’s publication became evident soon enough.

Times have changed, as has the Celtic View itself, which emerged as a must read for most/many Celtic fans, but Not The View remains just as passionate and cheeky.

Anybody else think that shipping out JVOH while he still has a resale value might be worth serious consideration?

Might give us the cash to double any money we were offering for Frei.

Sell Riordan to WBA and maybe we could be looking at Naismith as well.

I am personally not convinced that Celtic need a 'big man' in the centre. A requirement for a big target man is often based on the failings of a crap midfield - and we have seriously sorted out our midfield this season.

Sutton was an awful lot more than a big target man - not sure that you could say the same for John Hartson or JVOH.

When I think of our better Celtic strikers - Wallace, Lennox, Dalglish, Macari, Nicholas, McGarvey, McAvennie, McCluskey, Cadete, Bellamy and of course Henke - I don't recall too many 6ft 4in lumbering giants.

    from the previous thread.

Well for all their bluster it looks increasingly like the emperor has no clothes. That mob were turgid last night and it's obvious to all that the tactics are kick anything that moves.

I did a wee bit of research on their "revolution" under Walter and the team that started last night, which you would assume was their strongest 11 and the team Le Guen started with last season. Which would you prefer to play against??

    Last night: Last Year:
    McGregor - Letizi
    Hutton - Bardsley
    Weir - Rodriguez
    Cuellar - Svensson
    Papac - Smith
    McCulloch - Martin/Sionko
    Ferguson - Ferguson
    Hemdani - Hemdani
    Adam - Clement
    Darcheville - Prso
    Boyd - Boyd

Now on paper and without the benefit of hindsight, which would you consider the strongest?

I share your nervous excitement, hopefully the draw will be as kind as is possible,if we were to qualify and they dont, coupled with winning this years league which I believe brings automatic qualification for next seasons CL, we could only blow such a financial advantage by bad signing decisions, the future indeed could look very rosy IF things pan out that way.
They would be back looking for a benevolent fan to buy Murray out and invest heavily in the team.
I do not want to consider the other scenario of the above so I remain positive.

Bambi :- With the exceptions of Prso for Darcheville and Smith for Papac I'd have to say I think this years team is the stronger. Yes we were lucky last night with one goal bneing a fluke and the second a clear foul (from my view) however sometimes you need to carry a bit of luck in a cup game. I still stand by my two predictions, Rangers to win this tie by three clear goals and Rangers to lift the league title.

It's been asked a few times, but I can't remember seeins an answer-what is the point of being seeded at this stage?Does it mean we will avoid some of the tougher teams in the draw,eg Shaktar[who won 2-0 away last night],or the Zetons;)?

Call me old-fashioned but I'm more worried about how we shape up this year, than the gormless of G51.If we do the Biz everything should take care of itself.

JVH will maybe liven himself up,now the season is starting in earnest.

I thought Darcheville was diabolical last night.
If Rangers give away free kicks as they did around the box last night they will be punished by better teams.
JVOH is a class player who will take another few games to get fully fit .Please have some patience ghuys.

I was in the Teser last night and the darnel match was on screen when something struck me (no, it wasn't a jacket potato wi white gloves on the shoulder, this time.)

The difference between us and them is neatly summed up in the difference between Tom and Colin McAdam. The brothers could never have played for the opposite teams. Colin was a prequel to Terry Warlock and should have worn one of those blue boilersuits from Carry On Screaming. Tom was a sane and reasonably good-looking chap

They are going to bludgeon their way with impunity this season. As we say in Wishaw when we want someone to remember what's been said - 'Mark My Ghee ' - though we might not any more now that he's the Father Of All Mothers.

Paul67 - I hope you took a can of my patented Darnkill, darnelist repellant with you last night, widny wanting you spreading more germs throughout ML1 and beyond.

    Edward,

I have to disagree, The only area that I would say has improved would be your goalkeeper. The back four had a guy who had been a CL semi finalist, a future captain of Sweden and the new Gary Neville. The midfield had the new Beckham, the captain of the French under 21 team and up front you had Prso who it has too be said was well past his best but still a better player than Captain Dobie.

The bench at that time was very similar to now, Hutton, Adam, Sebo, Papac, Novo and Burke were all subs at that time, they are now 1st team picks who were kept out by last years duds. The only players last night who might add something to your team this year are Thomson and Beasley although I wouldn't like to be relying on those two to get me out of the mire.

Ted, I admire your optimism but I have to say I cannot genuinely see much improvement in this years team, they may well be harder to beat but there is a distinct lack of creativity when the blood and snotter tactics fail.

    Cheers Paul,

    Last thread answer.

Didn’t think you would have any comprehensive assessment on hand but after conversations with a couple of Rangers supporters I thought I might ask somebody with a lot more knowledge on the subject than I for their gut feeling.

My understanding of the situation over at Ibrox, thought rather disjointed, would be woefully concerning, if I was of that persuasion.

Rather simplistic I know but this is how I saw it:-

    Net assets of 72 Mill?

If any buyer were to approach them, with a view to buying, they would have to pay 72 Mill. minimum to acquire those assets plus they would have to buy out Mr. Murray’s shares; Valued at approximately,…………………………?????

now this is where I get really got lost and had to back away from the ‘conversation’ with my two Rangers supporting colleagues.

Now please Paul, or any other numerically astute amongst you, tell me this is tosh.

They claimed the share price to be at 55 pounds 50 pence a share X 108707499 shares issued.

Mr Murray owns 97% of these shares. = approx 105,000,000. Multiplied by 55.50 = I don’t believe it.

Bottom line Paul, when you do get round to publishing your assessment of the state of the Ibrox Nation, would you please include your perception of what a potential buyer would have to stump up to own Rangers outright. And put it in absolute baby layman’s terms so numerically disadvantaged people like me, can understand it.

    Bambi

You've been bursting to get that one out.

If you remember back to Rangers last years, preseason games they had one against, Airdre? or Hamilton? or one from that genre. Anyway I think at best they drew. Prior to the game it was annonced that this was Rangers 2nd Eleven and that not many would be there come the close of that transfer window. PLG was the new man.
Hutton amongst others was playing that night.
Just can't find the team sheets.

DBBIA, to clarify BigChips link, no not all of the 16 seeds are straight in the 3rd round draw (eg the Scottish also rans) whereas there are some non-seeds already through to the 3rd round (eg Toulouse).
As the draw is made prior to the second round ties being concluded, this in effect means any team who knocks out a team which would be seeded in the third round, at the second round stage (taking a random example: if FC Zeta won 3-0 in thier second leg), then they would be the seeded team in the third round.
Simple, eh? And we haven't even started on country protection....

Edward - you're normally the voice of reason on here, but your prediction for Rangers to lift the title this year is going straight in Room 101 with the Ibrox Casino.

I know it's only the first competitive match that the Gers have played & that Celtic are hardly the finished article either, however that is the poorest Rangers side i have seen since the days of Ally Dawson & Dave McKinnon.

Down the years you've always had players of quality who were feared & had an edge to their play. Players like Albertz, Laudrup, Van Bronkhurst, Artur Numan, Ronald De Boer, Stefan Klos, Arveladze, Dado Prso etc. This current team are not a footballing team & the emphasis appears to be on stopping the opposition by whatever means it takes.

Only Barry Ferguson, Chris Burke & Brahim Hemdani have any real craft about them. The rest are a poor lot & whilst i expect Rangers to be a much harder team to beat this season, it will be your dearth of quality player that will see you struggle.

And another thing - i thought your lots choice of song was a disgrace last night - i mean chanting for Sebo........

I just thought about it last night, I don't have t'interweb access at home, so I thought I'd check their team from early last year and lo and behold I was right. I know it's all paper talk and we shouldn't read anything into that but I think a lot of Celts for whatever reason will always talk up the other side's chances and downplay ours.

Bottom line, we have improved our team while they haven't. In my humble opinion of course.

I think we may see 1 or 2 1m signings from them before the end of the window but that will not be enough quality to make them credible title challengers, whilst I think we may see a few 2-3m signings coming in to our squad.

    Kitalba,

Shares have an issue price or nominal value and for quoted companies an actual or trading price.

The 2 often bear no resemblance to one another.

If the company is quoted the number of shares issued times the current market price per share is the current market value of the company.

The issue price or price originally paid can be higher or lower and the difference will depend on the market view of performance or potential since the shares were originally issued.

    Now is that clear?

As someone who predicted the Darnel would give us a stronger challenge this season, can I just say that I stand by that prediction.

However, what a joy to behold last night was! Two of the flukiest goals you will ever see and some of the least convincing forward and midfield play as well.

    Without Bazza, they are lost.

Nonetheless, Wattie's tactics are clear for all to see. Kick, kick, and kick again.

Unfortunately, they will get away with that a lot in Scotland this year as ever.

Bambi :- I agree that on paper the team at the start of last year looked the better bet and to be fair I ignored the "hindsight" caveat. However the team that looked good on paper was one of the most inept Rangers teams I have seen in a long time, the surrendered (not a popular trait at Ibrox lol) far too easily to teams they should have beaten with ease, showed no fight and had one of the worst dressing room splits that has ever been seen at Ibrox. My one regret for this years team is that you got Mr Brown rather than us, possibly the best bit of business done at C.P in a long time.

Good to see you pay tribute to NTV!

Pre-Internet, old board, Mo Johnston, TFOD 9 in a row, Owen Archdeacon and Gary Gillespie. How did we survive?

NTV emerged at the peak of my match attending days. Like Hanif, I've got number one on.. until I got a burd who would tolerate (up to a point)my hoops obssessions. The gaps in my NTV collection tells its own story!

NTV at least gave us a laugh in those dark times. It was one of the first of the football fanzines. Were we the first Scottish club to have one?

It was non-sectarian yet took the mickey superbly at TFOD. It Came From Ibrox? Johnstoneballs? They Embarrased the Hoops was brutally honest too.

NTV has spawned many imitators at CP, a sure sign of success.

I don't know who any of the NTV guys were but I'm sure they must have played a major part in unseating the old regime.

Politically at least, if not organisationally, NTV spoke for the fan when the old board was taking Celtic to the wall. Celtic View in those days WAS Pravda, as NTV called it.

Those days, 86-92 were my formative years as a match going Celtic fan. I'll never forget how grim they were (Love St, Centenary year apart and the odd Joe Miller/Tommy Coyne piece of cup magic).

Happy birthday NTV. Keep 'em coming.

i dont think the net assets valuation matters any more.....this consist mainly of the revaluation of the stadium....the price that will need to be paid is dependent on how much of a hit MIH's balance sheet can sustain, because he isn't going to get anywhere close to the price the investment is in his books at....

the bank are also aware of the net asets issue...the bank knows it's not realisable at the price it's in the books at, and the bulk of the debt was moved at the banks instructions to MIH, where it is secured over more realisable assets.....

....the bank are allowing some investment to try and get into the CL proper, which in turn might help to attract a buyer....

....that is all the bank care about....don't swallow this guff from murray that he is looking for the "right" buyer.....he has no say in the matter....

...he will not be allowed to turn anyone away who will enable the bank to get their loans repaid.....not that he cares who buys it....with his ego a poor buyer, who comes up with an acceptable price....he will spin the acceptability of whoever is succesful, and if they turn out to be be failures , you will see stories appearing about the "good old days" under his stewardship

VargasShampoo :- I'll be the first to admit last night was a poor show from the team to be fair though in cup games the result and going through are the important things. Part of my reasoning is that I feel Mr Smith has the beating of Mr Strachan. I don't see us dropping the points we did last season and therefore the Rangers/Celtic games will be a lot more important. I think this will be one of the seasons when results between the two decide the league.

PS Could I say that in my opinion no one is the voice of reason at the start of a season, we are all super optimists who just know this is going the be the year that it all goes right :-)

    Edward,

The other great difference between our two teams is that when the pressure is on we seem to grow as a team and the individuals seem to get a greater sense of purpose and rise to the occassion, ie Nak and Boruc in the CL, late goals from McManus, Jarosik, Miller, JVOH etc but Rangers seem to go missing under the same circumstances, ie Boyd in big pressure games doesn't seem to score, Ferguson goes awol, The games last year when this happened were over in Israel, Aberdeen at Pittodrie, Osasuna, all the players with little or no big game temperament let you down and I don't see that nay of the new guys will bring you any of that.

    Kitalba,

In short, to buy out Murray I expect he will need at least the same amount of money as the club represent on the balance sheet of his holding company, MIH.

This will be the net worth of the club, circa £80m. Any buyer would need to pay this much just to take over the club with its current debt, further investment, if required, would need to be found.

Remember also that the net worth of the company is not necessarily the value any owner would want to sell, in fact it seldom is. Coincidentally, Murray has paid around £80m for his shares and might seek a profit from his tenure.

I reckon the price sought will be between £80m and £100m, and that will buy you the scruff of a once large club without merchandising revenue.

It could take an investment of near £150m from a new buyer to put Rangers back on a level playing field with Celtic.

Can you see it happening? Me neither.

Hmmm, are the BBC reporting Naismith fee agreed with Celtic??

On last nights game, I wouldn't put too much stock in it. If Boyd's shot had went in then they could have been 3-0 up at half time. Further, did we ourselves not come back from a terrible opening European result to win a league....

Bambi, I would be willing to wager a large sum of money that this current Rangers squad will score more points in the SPL this year than the equivalent squad did last year.

I think Whittaker is a decent player but he is suspect defensively and gives the ball away more than Paul Telfer could ever dream of. No great improvement with this signing.

Very happy if we have agreed a fee for Steven Naismith, a fine name despite the spelling. I'd start him up front on Sunday!!!

    No8,

I won't argue that they will pick up more points than they did last year and they will comfortably finish 2nd as no other spl team has strengthened from last season and most have in fact gone backwards.

Aberdeen have lost Anderson, their capt and best player and have no plans to replace him

Hearts, have signed some more Lithuanians from the team who were put out by the dross Rangers played last night.

Hibs, Have lost Brown, Killen, Thomson and Sproule and have replaced them with unknowns.

Killie, about to lose Naismith, may strengthen but unlikely.

Dundee Utd, have brought in 1 or 2 players who will make them stronger.

the rest have alla lost players and not replaced with similar quality. Rangers will still drop points though, mainly away games after European games (uefa cup hopefully)

Good post, and Edward's reply is interesting.

Truth is, you get what you pay for most times. Estadio may have spent an arm and a leg on his daughter's foot, but it would have cost him more to buy cheaper.

Compare and contrast three years of spending to stay where you are, alongside our continuous improvement.

If you cut through the hype, this year's lot is no better, and probably no worse, than last year. Or the year before. Or the year before. In my opinion of course.

Capucho, for example, would on the face of it outshine anyone on that list.

The interesting thing for me is that, in spite of the lessons of the last couple of years, the pendulum of opinion once again had started to swing Rangers' way after a couple of pre-season kickabouts.

Tells you a lot about the aspirations of our establishment and our legacy of years of disappointment.

I thought it would be closer next season. Now I'm not so sure. I haven't seen last night's match (although following following it on follow follow was entertaining), but if the accounts of brutality are correct it may well be that Walter has bought himself a well disguised mid-table SPL outfit.

    Rangers may blend in perfectly.

    Sorry Edward.

Now I'm a confirmed numeridiot, but I thought that's not a lot of money in the football world. Then I considered that Man City were bought recently for £81m, almost half that amount.

When you consider that they are involved in the cash-cow that is the EPL and the annual windfall for finishing at least 17th; they still have there own merchandising rights and a nice new stadium (not sure they own that though); £150m for starts to look like quite a sum for a club with so few options left for bringing in hard cash.

Surely if Whittaker has moved for £2m (I presume that figure inlcudes sell-ons for the next 20 years and a 'Bain' all round) then that must kill their interest in Naismith?
