State of the club report 2007

In the last seven years for which accounts are available, (seasons ending 2000 – 2006), Celtic’s total income was £387m.

During this period, they spent £222m on wages and £139m on other operating expenses (which includes everything from police to rates, electricity, catering, telephones and a million other minor items). They also spent £14.3m on servicing debt, including interest payments and non-equity dividends.

Ignoring amortisation for a moment, which changes how transfers affect the accounts by apportioning costs over the contract period, and concentrating on cash transactions, Celtic generated £13.6m cash from player sales and spent £63.4m cash during the period for players coming into the club.

Total cash spent in the period was £437.4m, total cash generated was £400.0m, leaving an overspend of £37.4m.

The shortfall was bridged by the 2001 and 2005 share issues, and an increase in net debt from £2.169m to £13.96m. Were it not for the spend on the new Lennoxtown training facility, the figures due to be released later this month would show year-end net debt close to zero.

The club have won five league titles in seven years and during this period gone from a European nonentity to competing in the latter stages of the Champions League for the first time ever.

As well as that European success, season 2006-7 achieved a league and cup double, and figures due to be released later this month will show record turnover in the region of £80m. Not only will Celtic turn a profit for the first time since 1999, that profit is likely to be more than the cumulative profit the company earned in its previous 118 year history.

It is tempting to look back ten years to the indignity of Rangers utter domination of Scottish football. “9 / 10, could do better”, the Nike billboards proclaimed; Celtic were little more than a curiosity to the wider world.

The recovery was as spectacular as it was unexpected by most observers. The bombast of some clubs, who were happy to indulge their egos while ignoring mounting debt, brought a collective psychosis over the country. Fuelled by the media, this brought scorn on Celtic’s “prudent” management style as voices clamoured for more money to be spent.

The club are now one of the best run sports businesses in the world. They dominate their domestic market, will soon open a new training complex, have invested in world class scouting and sports science resources, and most importantly of all, are backed by a support who have bought season tickets in high numbers during periods of sunshine and shadow.

Failure to deliver a plan that would see Celtic escape from the Scottish Premier League hangs over the club, and will limit its progress in European football more than any other factor. Hopes of joining the FA Premier League in England have faded, and the club seem to be without a strategy to address this problem.

The commercial success of the FA Premier League will force Celtic to the margins of the transfer market, but being outside this league during a period of rapid change may be a blessing. Celtic remain in the ownership of Celtic fans, who have allowed the club to work through a long period without making a profit. The consequences of new ownership for clubs in the FA Premier League have yet to be established.

A successful transfer window – and I by no means think our business is complete this month – and progress to the Champions League, will ensure income streams and the contingent football performances remain strong going forward.

Sorry, posted this at end of last thread.

    TMC, DBBIA,

Thanks for you references to Kelly's letter. You would have thought in the Thirteen or so years since Fergus rode into town, he would have had ample opportunity to set the record straight as to the alleged underhand tactics employed in gaining control of the club.

In the book, Rebels in Paradise, by David Lowe, the step by step campaign to assume control is precisely mapped out. Included in this, is the part played by each member of the Board. Had there been any inaccuracies in recounting events, there was plenty of opportunity for litigation open to those who felt maligned. None ensued.

Is the mineshaft closed at the moment? Surely the new fella should be corresponding from deep within the shaft.

    From last thread:

    aviewfrom

We didn't sign Geoff Horsefield, so I would absolve GS of any blame there. We did sing DD as a stop-gap, experience centre-forward - never to be regular starter. So what, he came, he did a job, left with two medals.

We did sign AB and SN. I'm delighted we did, both are as close to European class, if not more, that we have. Celebrate them even more.

We did sign Virgo, who hasn't done well. I'lll give you that one. And maybe Camara, but he had been on our radar since MON and from what I understand, would have signed had MON still been in charge. He was poor - might give you that one.

But I'm not prepared to give you SP. Outstanding on his return to Tynecastle, he was signed when we needed exerpienced back-up and did a job late last season. He was particularly poor in the cupfinal, but we kept a clean sheet and won it. There you go. This season? Consigned to his rightful place as experienced back-up on the bench. And you're not getting Caldwell. A nightmare in Benfica, granted, but before that was part of a good-looking partnership with our new captain, that, lest we forget, kept two home clean-sheets in the champions league and guided us to several points ahead in the league. He'll do for me. As things have worked out, he may have to be on the bench, but that's due to a return to fitness and form, for JFK. The manager you slight brought him straight back into the team. And you certainly don't get Naylor. One good season? Yes, dead right. He's been here one season and hasn't played a 'competitive' match this. A poor show to criticise him.

Tactically inept? You simply don't win the league by a stretch and have three home victories in the champions league by being that I'm afraid. To stretch your point, anyone who loses to him, ie Ferguson, must be worse. Hmmm. As they say.

And there's a clip from Soccer AM on GS post-match from his time in England GS soccer am It's actually entertaining. GS communicates with me in the Celtic View, in the programme and yes, indirectly via the old media you talk of. But I could care less how he handles the old media. For the most part, their biggest story would be if he walked. It would make you happy too, apparently.

And it would throw us into turmoil as the start of a season with little time left in the transfer window. And make us the laughing stock Real Madrid were when they let go Cappello and before, del Bosque. Win stuff and get fired. Yet you ccriticise the board just now? Well I'd sure criticise the board if they did that. And yes, he is a board dream. Cut the wage-bill, wheel and deal at a profit, and win two championships in a row, get us to last 16 (tactically inept? Hmmm). He's also a supporter's dream if all that happens. Not the nightmare you suggest.

30,000 for a pre-season? Reasonable I'd say. It was Parma and a useful work-out. And, a victory. And a clean-sheet. And decent performances from most of the team. As I'll allude to shortly, we raise the league flag on Sunday. There will be more than 30,000 there.

My glass may be half-full, aviewfrom, I may even be optimistic. That's what comes from being a fan of a team that's just won the double and goes into Sunday raising a league flag. In my opinion. And I know we can win on Sunday. To say anything less, is, without resorting to insult, frankly bizarre.

aview - all fine I'd say except for the one about attendance at the Parma reflecting the majority view. I think that's just about normal for that level of opposition and comparable with the average for MON in the 'big' pre-season home games:

    01/02 Fulham 56,000; Sunderland 11,000;
    02/03 Ajax 38,500; Parma 26,948;
    03/04 Arsenal 44,396;
    04/05 Newcastle 20,000; Spurs 30,000;

The notable exception being the Fulham game.

There's a big blowout on the go in world debt markets. Interest rates are rising too.

'Manageable' debt has always been the watchword, but in the next little while this may mean debts a bit lower than they are now. Lawwell and Co would do well to heed this.

Equally I'm happy to be seeing the Darnel incur even more of it in their obsessive quest to stop our three in a row. In a way I don't mind too much if they succeed, if it ensures that their long term burden is even greater.

I always thought of myself a happy chappy. Tail's not awaggin', probably because it's not big enough according to the wife, but on the whole I'm pleased with how things are progressing.

Think back to black Sunday and even the artmedia game and where we are now (on team 3 to boot).

I know you'll never please all, but surely progress is what is required. I think we have seen that year on year, and hopefully with more to follow.

I'm certainly looking forward to a few Euro adventures this year.

Apart from anything else, no matter what you think of WGS's abilities, his ego allows him to work are part of the management team. That's from the board down. He is an integral part of that framework.

There will be down's as well as up's but I'm hoping and expecting more of the latter.

agree on your ab and Naka comments--I just wish he would play naka in a free role..instead of restricting his game to be as good as the overlapping defender's game...

Caldwell is Strachans blindspot-he is a limited player but strachan sees him as an all rounder...

On virgo- he didnt stand a chance-- as he was settling into the big club- he was played in 3 different positions and then the final nail was to play him in a postion he had never played in against dunfermline away...

Tactics-- even walter smith won home games in champs league ;-) And btw we didnt beat man U
He admits that a 4-4-2 is the best formation...

Of course I hope you are all correct but I dont think you are...and yes I will be there supporting anyway...but for me the sooner he goes the quicker we really progress

How much available funds have we not spent this summer based on this figure?

Michael Kelly's letter really is class.

The suggestion that the Bunnet and Co "created a crisis to exploit it to their own ends." is interesting. Wonder which part of the Taylor report demanding all seater stadia Fergus penned. Or did he have a say in appointing Brady and Macari? Maybe he thought Stuart Slater was worth all that money.

Almost as good are the lines "The Bank of Scotland saw an advantage in siding with these individuals. But they misread the situation and lost the lucrative Celtic business after the old board left."

Overdraft payments are indeed lucrative. The way I read it at the time Fergus ditched the BoS because they allowed the Kellys etc to stumble on in to even greater debt even after Terry Cassiday had phoned them ON HIS FIRST DAY IN THE JOB as CEO and told them not to extend the overdraft because, never mond the money, they didn't even have a business plan. Maybe the "rebels" had stolen it.

Celtic pre March 4th 1994 was a private club run exclusively for the benefit of a select few. The removal of those people was akin to cutting out a cancer. Good ridance.

    SICK OF SETANTA

With apologies to Paul for taking up space on a fascinating thread I feel myself moving towards the creation of an SOS site for Setanta sufferers of which there are a few I believe. This is long but anyone else sick of Setanta’s practices may well wish to take note and share their experiences and the outcome.

In view of the advertising campaign re £9.99 per month and the fact that my subscription was due renewal I sent an e-mail to Setanta on the 11th July. It said simply

    “Hello

Can you clarify for me please what the renewal subscription terms will be? I take your services via the Sky platform.

    Many thanks”

    And added

“in order that there is no confusion I would confirm that my expectation is that I will be paying no more for the next renewal than your currently advertised rate of £9.98 per month.”

I received an acknowledgement promising a reply within 5 working days.

On the 14th July I sent a protest re the lack of information re the non - screening of the QPR match.

I received an acknowledgement promising a reply within 5 working days.

On the 20th July I sent a reminder.

I received an acknowledgement promising a reply within 5 working days.

    Yesterday I sent the following

“I wrote to you originally on the 11th July.

    I have sent 2 e-mails since on the 14th and 20th July.

Other than your standard e-mail response suggesting a response within 5 working days I have heard absolutely nothing from you.

I ask you now to provide contact details for your Managing Director in order that I lodge my complaint at your disgraceful inability to maintain an acceptable level of customer service.

I have to question if this cavalier attitude to long standing subscribers is indicative of your likely future treatment of your original customers and is a direct result of your winning part of the EPL contract.

If so and if my reading of the mood amongst current subscribers is correct then you may well find that a trickle may well turn into a flood once the aggrieved become organised to return your abysmal treatment in kind.”

Today I received a reponse from Setanta apparently replying to my reminder of 20th July.
    It said

Thank you for your e-mail and please accept my apologies for the delay in response.

I can confirm that Setanta Sports, as with any business, initiate several offers throughout the course of the year to attract new customers. Each offer is aimed at different segments of the market and specific criteria has to be met for eligibility and the recent introduction of the £9.99 per month subscription rate is available to new customers only.

However, as advised, many different offers are launched throughout the year, some of which are available to new and existing customers so please continue to visit www.setanta.com for all the latest news, updates and announcements which are released on our website in the first instance, as soon as they are available.

The forthcoming season is an exciting time and Setanta Sports has a great line up planned including:

    60 Live SPL games
79 Live Blue Square Conference games
    46 Live English Premiership games
40 Live games each from top European teams Live Magners League and French Top 14 Rugby Live FA Cup games USPGA Golf North American Sports, plus many other sporting events.

If further information or assistance is required, please call our Customer Services team on the number below. Our lines are open from 8.00 am to midnight, seven days a week.

    Yours sincerely

    Donna Mathieson

    Setanta Sports Customer Services

I have written the following reply

Thank you for your e-mail, apparently in response to mine of the 20th July.

It is co-incidental perhaps that this has come so promptly after my e-mail of yesterday requesting contact details for your Managing Director. Whether or not that is the case please note that I still require those details.

Your response is most interesting. I am intrigued that you should feel that your programme schedule including so many items that I have no interest in is some sort of attraction.

I am also intrigued by your claim that " as advised, many different offers are launched throughout the year, some of which are available to new and existing customers." Would you care to quote an example of any offer that I might have taken up during the past 12 months?

In your response you have still failed however to answer the basic question I put to you on the 11th July which was " Can you clarify for me please what the renewal subscription terms will be? I take your services via the Sky platform."

I would also point out that my experience thus far as a customer gives me cause for concern regarding the ethics of your company since last year at renewal you charged me £180 whilst charging other existing customers £140. I had to point this out to you in order to obtain parity on that occasion. Am I surprised to find that on checking my VISA details today that this year you have again charged £180 to my VISA account, this on the 25th July, 14 days after my e-mails to you?

For the avoidance of doubt I would confirm that your failure to respond in the timescale promised has denied me the opportunity to cancel my subscription should I have wished to do so.

Clearly I find your response less than acceptable since it would have been of benefit to me to cancel my subscription and re-apply to benefit from the terms offered to new customers bearing in mind that your existing customer base is so obviously undervalued.

I look forward to your response, hopefully within 5 working days on this occasion.

The attitude of Setanta is I find a common one with any number of companies today. Ignore correspondence and in the end the little guy will get tired and go away. Clearly only subscriber numbers are important to Setanta and all they will take notice of so again I would ask that if anyone has similar experiences to let me know so that we may be able to demonstrate some greater strength at a future time.

So far I think the following subscribe to Setanta. Correct me if I’m wrong.

    Caoimhin Dubh
    Pfayr
    Bonbhoy
    Ardoch
    Antsman
    Lyn’s Greensocks
    Henrik’s Sombrero
    Ulster Celt

Thanks for this excellent article Paul. I enjoy seeing some of the details underlying the strength of the club. We certainly look to be in great shape, and getting better. It seems like the obsession to eliminate the debt has diminished, is that because it's now under control? Or maybe that it's due to the investment in Lennoxtown rather than spent on something frivolous, like players!

How important do you think it is to the GoD for us to be the sole Scottish team in the CL group stage? Increasing our income while denying them cash makes me smile.

Finally, how many players do you expect to see leave CP before the end of the month? I'd hope 4 or 5.

    Big Liam

Thanks for posting the goal against Man Utd. I still get goosebupms everytime I see it.

One small of topic point for the coming season. Being out here I was able to watch a few of Japan's games in the Asian Nations cup, unfortunatley with only Japanese commentary, which might as well have been Swahili as far as my language skills are concerned.

However I couldn't help but notice how badly wrong we get the pronounciation of Shinsuke Nakamura's name.

We tend to go with ( excuse my poor attmepts at phonetics)

" Shinsooky Nakamoora," with the emphasis on the second syllable of his first name and the third in his last name.

In Japan it is more like, " Shinski Nah-camera," with the emphasis on the middle "cam" sound.

I imagine it must get quite frustrating continually hearing your name mispronounced ,and I propose a campaign for all our intrepid phone in callers to correct this if the opportunity arises.

    Mon the Shinski.......

Interesting article Paul. Well-researched as usual. A few downers though.

The key concern I have for the future is that I think the impact of the English tv deal will have far greater ramifications for our game (and the consequent team on the pitch) than any other change since the Bosman ruling. I am scared when I hear the likes of West Ham spending £7M on an average player because it undermines our aspirations. Inevitably, we are going to get squeezed and miss out on players who would rather go to mid-table obscurity (gaining greater personal security of £40k a week) with no chance of winning a medal than come up to Scotland and face the likes of Kilmarnock for £12k a week. Whilst we will always attract players with an affiliation to Celtic I would like to be competing for the best in the market rather than just those who want to come here or the flotsam left over after the Premiership bunfight.

As for investors in the English game, I think they are there for the long haul. Very strong cash flows in the future will guarantee that their investment is worth while. It seems unlikely that there will be any significant wane of the tv rights any time soon, but TV is not where these investors anticipate ramping up the revenues. The Premiership looks likely to improve on it's marketing at the behest of the new owners. Lerner at Villa and Gillett at Liverpool both think that Scudamore is a complete amateur and want the league to be marketed in the same way as NFL and baseball are in the US thus realising many more and greater revenues. Scudamore's position weakens by the day in the face of these hardened businessmen.

Another fear I have is that we are only as good as the people we have at the top. Brian Quinn is the consummate professional when it comes to dealing with the media. He is very skilled in dealing with the obstacles that come his way. However, he has made clear that he intends to retire fairly soon. Can we guarantee that we will have someone of his calibre to replace him (Dr John Reid may be well-connected but somehow I think the cabinet pitbull could whip up as many storms as he calms)?

Peter Lawell's capabilities speak for themselves. I would not be surprised to see some big Premiership clubs (and other business outwith football) casting an envious eye at the current Chief Exec. He has made it no secret that he will leave Celtic at some point soon.

When Lawell and Quinn leave there will be a considerable strategic gap at Parkhead. I only hope that there are already plans in place to ensure that their successions are achieved as smoothly as possible for the tumultuous years ahead.

    Tutti

    Thanks again.

By the way, I would love to See Sean back in the hoops. Who among us never made any bad decisions when we were in our early twenties. Gee whizz! I'm still making them now, and my early twenties are but a distant memory. Quite simply I think we are a more balanced and creative team with him playing. A midfiled drawn from Aiden, Sean, Massimo, Scott and Shinsuke in full flow, and feeding into a mobile Jan and Scot Mac up front in my opinion will really be something special once it clicks.

I eventually got through to them after about 10 minutes waiting, where they basically said that I had to write to the refunds department. I have sent them a letter letting them know that I wish to move over to the £9.99 deal, so we will see what comes of it. This really p*ssed me off, as being stuck down here in England, I have been paying Setanta a fortune over the last 6/7 years when you consider all the pay-per-view games they used to do.

I'm at the moment trying to catch up on the previous blog and have seen the contribution from you.

    Welcome aboard.

One comment though and not directed at you personally but offered as food for thought. I then promise to leave the subject alone.

The comment is that it often astounds me just how many posters there have been who begin to comment on this blog with a variety of attacks upon either the board or the manager, the attacks being quite often presented in an aggressive manner who in turn are quick to whinge at some internet "gang" who apparently inhabit this space with the sole desire of driving them away. They then make the prophecy self fulfilling by withdrawing from the blog only periodically returning to moan that nothing's changed.

Someone else has commented that perhaps they need to realise that they are in a minority for me at least in the way they present their view of the world but accept also what most people say viz that alternative views are more than welcome ,that the fears they are expressing are shared at least in part by the others who continue to post here but that the way they are expressed means that they do not draw a similar response.

Again nothing personal but simply food for thought.

    Paul 67

Can I be in your gang?

"They asked to speak to him, but that was on Monday.

"What is a little bit concerning is that we haven't heard anything yet.

"I've kept him up to date with everything, but this could make it seem as if we are not telling him everything.

"They might be busy or have other things on, but if they ask to speak to him then it's only courtesy to the player that they speak to him as quickly as they can.

"It has caused a lot of anxiety for him and it's not fair.

"Steven intimated that he would be willing to speak to Celtic because there is no point in wasting everybody's time.

"And after giving them permission we would like to find out what they are doing."

miketw - fair enough, but diving and simulation would not be my first attack if I were chief exec - it's low hanging fruit. Unlike other leagues, diving is not an issue in this country. The two examples shown on tv last night were of a Hearts player falling as Barr of Falkirk stood up to confront him, and KM being brushed aside in the box by a Kilmarnock player. Hardly serious offences and I can't think of many others in the SPL. Champions League - Amoruso against us, arguably Giggs v us, some from the EPL too. At the very least, Duffield could have done his research on FIFA rules.

Duffield is very ambitious, clearly seeing David Taylor's path as one easily followed. A prediction? Duffield will keep trying the new initiatives in the hope UEFA will come calling. More likely, he will fall on his face when he goes too far or becomes Farry-like.

Now Duffield. How about sectarian singing and chants. Ooops, too thorny.
