Strachan press conference, Falkirk, Doumbe, Virgo

I don’t think I have seen Celtic play well at the Falkirk Stadium; even their victories seem to have been dogged battles, so they will know what to expect tomorrow lunch time. Gordon Strachan was at Fir Park last week to see their four goal demolition of Gretna, so should be well up to speed with their strengths, “Falkirk played well last week. They have good players, it will be a good game.”

Both Strachan and goalkeeper Mark Brown offered a measured response to the home draw against Kilmarnock last week. Mark Brown noted the strikers have been scoring well in training, which sounded like an incongruous note of confidence coming from a goalkeerer. Gordon Strachan seemed happy with the volume of chances created, blaming “human error” for the failure to score.

We can expect adaptable full back Jean-Joel Perrier-Doumbe to join the club in the next week, possibly before the team leave for Moscow on Monday.

Strachan confirmed that Adam Virgo was subject to an enquiry this morning – not from Motherwell – adding to an enquiry earlier in the week for Scott Cuthbert.

Paul - Any mention of Gary Irvine, Paul Lawson & a few others being told to find themselves a new club?

Also - on the Spartak Moscow astroturf pitch. The emphasis of Strachan's Celtic is to play football on the ground, so this should be to our advantage. I would be more worried if we had players like Balde & Valgaeren in the team then we would be up against it.

It would appear that as soon as McDonald is available, he will immediately partner JVOH

which is a bit of a slap in the face to Riordan

but i think McDonald will be an excellent wee player for us
he has all the skills needed to succeed.

His only failing is that he is untried at european level, but thats only due to the fact that he hasnt been given a chance there yet so good luck to him

As the Doumbe deal looks like it won't go through till next week, surely this can't be seen as a panic champs league buy. At a reported £400k and £5k week that seems reasonable for a back-up squad player especially when it is one that the management have had 6 months to get familar with. Know excatly what they are getting.

Instead of going for panic buys for the Champs League is it possibly not just the case that the manager has sufficient belief and trust in the talent at his disposal to get thru this round.

While keeping his ear to the ground on any other potential buys before the window shuts.

i know I want to believe that he and the team have sufficient self-confidence that they will qualify. It won't be easy, but then anything worth having should involve a bit of graft.

Please just get three points tomorrow, us ugly as it likes.

Listening to Billy Stark during the week on Celtic TV and he said these surfaces have improved a lot since the one Dunfermline had down, his take on it they are good for playing football on the deck but they still bounce high so the players will need to attack the ball and dont wait on it bouncing.

I liked what i saw of Doumbe last season, but if he's only being brought in as back up that's pretty worrying. I dont think Wilson Or Naylor are good enough in the full back positions and would rather they were the back up.

This might seem harsh on Naylor who i thought was great last season, but i just cant help thinking that it was a flash in the pan...I hope i'm wrong and will hold my hands up if that is the case.

Also on Wilson, i hope he can recapture the form he had when he forst arrived, but he was not playing well last season before the injury i dont care what Strachan says!!

A bit negative there on Naylor and although I agree Wilson didn't have a great season last year he never really hit a run of games and I think he's a bit of a confidence player.

He was getting up and down the park nicely against Kilmarnock and we seen his pace for the first time in a while saving us from an almost certain goal with a last ditch tackle where he must have made up about 25 yards.

Not too pleased about the Doumbe signing - I didn't think he gave much from what I seen last season and believe it's showing UEFA cup ambitions. What annoys me more than anything is why couldn't we get the deal through in time for the deadline?

Wilson i thought had a great game against Killie, infact it was like the Wilson of old..Hope it continues.

I disagree about Doumbe..I think he played well last season in the few games he got. I just dont see how it's taken all this time to sign him. Obviously it's the cheaper option we've went for. That's the worrying thing for me.

We needed to start raising our game months ago.
Given their lamentable record at CP we couldn't have asked for an easier opening fixture, except perhaps Gretna.

After a bright opening we seemed to succumb to the wierd Man'flu that affected so many of our performances last year.

Perhaps what's wrong with JVH is he thinks he's getting a game regardless,as the other forwards are not putting him under enough pressure to justify his place. There should be keen competition for every place in the starting line-up.

Rangers scored 2 coefficient points more than Celtic did last season, so our ambitions are not so bad then.

    Lennondinho18...

Hopefully every player tomorrow will be running about like maniacs.

Careful what you wish for. Imagine eleven Tommy Gravesens running about the pitch!

Big Jan looks short of confidence at the moment

So drop him to the reserves to bag a few goals and get back with the programme. And get Deeks & Killen up front against the league leaders.

    My team for tomorrow
    Brown
    Wilson, JK, SMcM, Naylor
    Naka, Brown, Donnati, Aiden
    Magic, Miller

I think we now have a lot of potential flare in middle of the park and we need player with pace up front to take advantage of the interplay and passes in to channels.
Unfotunatley I 'm getting a bit worried about what JVoH is offering. Never thought he has the skill or presence of Sutton, or the presence and poaching ability of Hartson. But hopefully he can at least get back to scoring goals.

    The Case For The Prosecution:

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury...

We sit here today on the back of two championships, two domestic cups, record progress in the continents top competition and the best set of financials ever generated by our historic club.

And yet....all is not right in the Celtic family. Whether it be over the airwaves, printed in the fish wrapper or scrawled in cyberspace - there is growing evidence of a serious schism in the heart of our dear club.

Now some will argue that such a large family will always have many factions but this is not the case here. Pre season jitters have been replaced by early season agitation, apprehension supplanted by fright, fear succumbing to outright dread. What is the cause of such anxiety and apoplexy?

The answer is simple. Our manager.

Now this answer may be recreancy to some but the evidence is there and it is growing.

We accept that Mr Strachan had a huge task in front of him when he first took the job but he has been given enough time and money to produce an entertaining and successful side. Can anyone say, hand on heart, that this has been achieved? Celtic enjoy a considerable financial advantage over our nearest rivals yet they are able to mount a serious challenge this year with only minimal investment. Where have the days gone when we looked forward to going to Ibrox and predicting how many we would win by? I need not remind you of the outcome of the last two old firm matches let alone the standard of performance offered by the team on each occasion.

We have been sold a vision of fast and flowing football, a return to the glory days of the famous Glasgow Celtic where our name was both feared and loved in equal measure across the world. Quick, attacking football with flair and passion to excite even those who do not care for the club. I ask you, again, to look inside yourselves and ask – when did you last enjoy a Celtic match? When were you lifted from your seat by an audacious performance? Is this really a team of which you will tell stories to your grand children in the decades to come? Will the achievements of the swashbuckling strachan teams go down in Celtic folklore?

Or will the truth be told.

That in the face of little resistance from anywhere in the league, a Celtic manager abandoned a centuries old philosophy and instead offered up pragmatism where perfection was once the desire. When did Celtic become a ‘just in time club’? When was doing ‘just enough’ acceptable to the family? In the face of such poor competition, Mr Strachan should have been using his vastly superior economic advantage to build a dynasty. Make no mistake – in the current environment, Celtic should be so far ahead of the competition that bookmakers don’t even make odds.

That we are not is the fault of our manager. We were once told that the Celtic shirt does not shrink to fit inferior players. It makes me wonder where such names as Pressley, Telfer, Dublin, Virgo, Camara, Caldwell and Miller will be recorded in the great paean of the Celtic past and future still to come.

Millions more have been wasted on such luminaries as Gravesen, Jarosik and Hartley whilst we have had to endure the curtailing and diminishing of natural talents like Riordan and Maloney.

We are told that Team 3 is nearing completion yet still there is no consensus or understanding of the great man’s vision for Celtic. Fans turn up to matches expecting to win ugly if it all.

Such meagre rations are not acceptable. Not now. Not ever.

In the space of the next 3 weeks, our great club may find itself out of Europe’s top competition and languishing in the bottom half of the SPL. That this is not a hugely unlikely scenario is beyond contempt.

We were promised a team builder and 3 years later he is still building having forgotten to put in the proper foundations. The failings are obvious, the weaknesses cruelly exposed on a weekly basis. This cannot be allowed to continue.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury I call for a vote of no confidence in our manager.

The Doumbe signing concerns me a little.

We made efforts to sign him at the end of the season. We decided against taking him for whatever reason, presumably he wanted too much. He then disappears, turns up in Sheffield where he is again knocked back, does another Lord Lucan for a few weeks and suddenly in negos with us again.

This suggests to me that in the meantime we have failed to secure other targets ahead of him for the full back positions so we have had to go back and take him as third or fourth choice perhaps, which suggests to me - 'did we really ever want him or is he just the best of what is left?'

if the soldiers song is non sectarian why are you worried about points deduction, personally I would belt it out all day if I had the chance, it's a lovely tune and it winds up these parochial muppets.

  • At 10/08/07 15:28, x said…

I know I'm generalising but the 'lets hope its sung for 90mins the mora' is usually held by those who want to sing the other songs with the add ons.

Last week I was standing in the pie queque at half time. The guy behind me started singing willie Maley to himself. Nice I thought. But, to my dismay and annoyance, even though he was singing it to to himself he had to add 'and the IRA'.

My point is we need to be disciplined. Yes we can sing the soldiers song. Do we really need to?

Personnally I would much rather wind up falkirk by scoring goals and playing great fitba and singing celtic songs (without the add ons)

  • At 10/08/07 15:29, dontbrattbackinanger said…

    Great!The songs debate!
    Nurse-the screens!...

What we are up against is a propaganda machine that makes Dr Goebbels look like Ken Barlow.
Already this week any offence thay have ever caused anyone is set aside by the[justified]furore over the racial abuse in Montenegro.

They are setting their buttons to record, just hoping our support will give them the evidence they need. And for what?

So we can sing songs about Ireland,a country a lot of the choristers would struggle to find in a map of the British Isles?

Do we not have enough Celtic songs?
Do we not have more songs of our own than any Club in the World?

Is this season going so swimmingly we can afford to have points deducted?

The SPL can't decide that the Soldier's Song is sectarian, it's an impossibility.

Adds on yes, but not the song specifically - it's no more or less offensive to anyone than GSTQ or Flower of Scotland!

They cannot abritarily start fining and deducting points for whatever song they chose - that in itself would be discriminatory. What if we start singing the Italian National anthem in support of Massimo?

Great_No_8 you are so full of mad dogs shite it is unreal. The Celtic Family? How can you be part of a family when you do nothing but criticise and whimper!

Alex Ferguson has spent over 50 million alone this summer recruiting new players to a fast flowing football team. Add that to the multi million buys of Ferdinand, Carrick, Ronaldo, Tevez, Rooney etc and you have a fast flowing side with an abundance in skill!

Now lets see how Gordon can match that! He has peanuts to play with in todays transfer market! Even if he did have the millions that ferguson or any other epl manager has he then has the job of actually trying to get them to come to the spl over the epl!

Now catch yourself on and actually be part of the family. Celtic represents a fight in life. We may not have some of the players that other teams have but we can match them as a team and our support is the best that the world will ever see!

C'mon the Hoops and bring on Spartak Moscow! They are the ones that will be worried come Wednesday!

Great No 8 what are your feelings on our previous manager Martin O’Neill. Are you as vociferous in detailing his failings as you are our current manager?

I think you are being a bit harsh on Strachan and want to know if this is a feeling you share about Mr O’Neill.
The same Mr O’Neill who signed such luminaries as Momo Sylla, Steve Guppy, Ulrik Laursen, Rab Douglas, Magnus Hedman, Stan Varga.
He also got to sign far more expensive players than Strachan in £6M for Sutton, Lennon and Hartson.
The football under O’Neill was not much better at times save for one factor, we had Larsson to get us off our seats. How many times were you sitting wishing he would take Lubo off the bench to entertain us? How many of those games were dire?

I agree football at tail end of last year was poor but must be hard to motivate players when so far ahead.
He is also on team 3 because he inherited a team 1 that was dead on it’s feet.
His team 1 done it’s job, won the league, his team 2 done it’s job, won the league and got to the last 16.

Martin O’Neill is a very popular figure with Celtic fans and rightly so, given what he achieved at the club. However was the challenge he was up against any better than Strachan faces….by making it to Seville we took our eye of the league and gifted a treble to a very poor Rangers team. We also threw away a 5 point lead with 5 games to go in his last season. We also lost qualifier to Basle (taking a 2 goal lead to the 2nd leg and playing 4 centre halfs!!) prior to the Seville run and I don’t recall such a groundswell of opinion that that manager had to go.

Martin O’Neill inherited a squad with Mjalby, Lambert, Petrov, Lubo and Larsson.
Gordon Strachan inherited a team with much less options.
Also had Martin O’Neill been our manager in last 2 years, would we have done any better. You talk about curtailing Maloney but it was Strachan who gave him a place in the team and made him the player he is just now. O’Neill used him sparingly and it is likely had he been in charge over last 2 years we would have sold/freed guys like Maloney, Wallace, Pearson and Beattie for much less than we got and also our current club captain would have left.

I think he is doing a decent job and deserves more credit for the job he has done.
I also think we have enough to get past Spartak and even if we don’t would not be looking to sack Strachan based on that alone. ALL managers make poor signings, Ferguson, Wenger, Mourinho all of them. IT’s the nature of the sport and it’s what makes it so interesting.

I vote against your vote of no confidence!

Oleg - really well put. A lot of the Mineshafters seem to forget a number of the not so great times under MON like: the last minute goal at Dens Park where the ball rolls in off Didier Agathe's ear, David Fernandez coming on as a sub at Pittodrie getting caught offside 26 times then getting subbed off again, Momo Sylla coming on at left back in the San Siro, Liam Miller coming on far too late away to 10 man Anderlecht, a 10 Man Shaktar Donetsk keeping the ball off us at Parkhead, Tommy Johnstone's shin winning us the league against St Mirren, Bobo doing his best impersonation of Marvin Haggler in the last 10 seconds in Lyon, Bobo doing his best impersonation of Souness in Seville, Stephane Henchoz out of breath after 20 mins in the 2nd last league game against Hibs, Defending on our own 6 yard box for the last 25 mins at Fir Park on Black Sunday, Rab Douglas throwing in 4 goals against Rangers in the 4-4 draw.

Anyway enough of this bickering - what i would say about the current Celtic team is that we lack personality & character. For me the fans frustration or disillusion is that a number of players don't look too bothered. That's maybe why Zurawski has come under a bit of scrutiny lately because his body language is the same regardless of whether he's playing well or poorly. The fans want to see a bit of fight from the team particularly from guys like Venegoor & Hartley

I assume those are the points totals we won the league with against those we lost with with 2 higher totals.
However as I said O'Neill had Larsson in one of those seasons and a few times we seemed to stop after going 2 or 3 up and goal difference cost us.
the second time we were 5 clear with 5 to play had just beaten them in their own midden and blew it big style.
Our current poor defence does not look too bad against those other 2 teams (Admittedly we have Boruc now) and whilst well down on goals, what do ou expect when you lose Sutton, Larsson, hartson, Bellamy. The money isn't there to get guys like that, or if it is we can't get them to come to Scottish football.
Also I would argue that Hearts, Hibs, aberdeen and Utd have improved in last 2 years not just us getting worse so has made it harder to accumulate the higher points margin.
Don't get me wrong O'neill's strongest team would beat Strachan's but O'Neills team in his one year without Larsson couldn't beat Motherwell with a 1-0 lead. I am not here to critise a very succesful manager, just to defend another very succesful manager.

Also agree we lack character and a bit of heart, too many forwards scared to put their foot in where Sutton and Larsson would have put their head in, we have been spoiled/lucky/blessed with great strikers in the past. We need another one now.

So even a weakened M o'N team, with a manager understandably distracted by his wife's severe illness, and lacking the best Celtic player since DMcgrain retired, could give the current champions a run for their money.

    Anyways,it proves nothing.

If you want something to think about between matches, reflect on this, from the Financial Times of 8 August:

“Winners and losers from the subprime and credit markets turmoil range from risk-hungry hedge funds to safe and boring-looking cash funds for retail investors; from high-street specialist mortgage companies to some of the world’s biggest investment banks; and from ordinary corporate borrowers to highly leveraged private-equity backed buy-out deals.
Since the smart money began using new derivatives indices to bet against the subprime market in earnest near the start of the year, concerns over lending standards have spread from mortgages to corporate debt.
From a world where most market participants carried similar exposures and were betting the same direction, the withdrawal of liquidity, or cash, from the system has been rapid and dramatic and has been the biggest single contributor to the wild girations the debt markets have suffered in the summer of 2007.”

Bear this in mind when you hear, read or are tempted to contribute a “This is the time to gamble/invest ” rant. And don’t forget: Manchester United season tickets rose by 14 per cent; 42 (forty-two!) English league clubs have experienced administration.

RogerMilla - from the Department of the Taoiseach (http://www.taoiseach.gov.ie/):

    National Anthem

The National Anthem, called The Soldier's Song was written in 1907 by Peadar Kearney, an uncle of Brendan Behan. It was first published in the newspaper, Irish Freedom in 1912, but was not widely known until it was sung at the GPO during the Easter Rising of 1916.
The chorus was formally adopted as the National Anthem in 1926.

What I say is, Ireland is too important to be left to the Irish to look after. What they need is a solid dose of Scots certitude.

It is not like choosing to shop at Sainsbury or Tesco,it's a different kind of commitment.Things have to be worse, and for longer, before people will drift away from their team, but the players and manager are lucky they were appearing at CP,and not the old Glasgow Empire.

Looking at the big picture,it will be easier to break into new markets if we are putting on a show;the supporter base is not likely to extend much outside the diaspora if the team is trying the patience of the diehards.

" the despot and the slave" then became "the death of orange slaves"
Nonsense like this, sung in front of a scottish press on a mission, is just fuelling the sectarian fire
providing the ammo they are desperate to find
On this point alone keep this song
out of fotball matches and by all means belt it out at celtic nights
