Strachan press conference, Miller at Derby and metaphors for every question

It is perhaps an indication of the stress which surrounds transfer deadline day that Gordon Strachan revealed he had “no irons in the fire” regarding players coming in today, but also said “If anything turns up this afternoon, great, but it will only be for players already on our radar.”

Let’s hope his 20th Century metaphor is a better indication of what is to unfold than his 18th Century one.

Gordon knows that encouraging words could be used against him in the future, so is unlikely to offer any with only 10 hours until the transfer window deadline, but he will be as keen to bring in fresh talent today as any of us.

He confirmed that Celtic have accepted an offer from Derby County for the transfer of Kenny Miler, who is in Derby at the moment discussing the move. “Kenny might think it is better to get a regular first team place somewhere else.

“Being a greedy man, I would like all my good players to stay, but that is not always possible.

“We would like a squad of 30 players, but even if you have only 18 players you would still have trouble keeping them all happy.

Having lost Gravesen and with the possible transfer of Miller, together with what I understand will be several youth players going out on loan today, the manager has freed up some budget and made space on the team bus.

The press room rumour mill was on form, but this close to the deadline, no one really knows what will unfold. If you have boots, and you are rotund enough to be visible on radar, apply within. Quickly.

Unless we have someonce else coming in of better quality then I am truely sorry to see Kenny go!

I believe Paul that you gave quite a big hint that there was a player who would be signed if we made the Champions League. Has this not materialised?

Hope I am wrong but would appear that we won't add to the current squad which will mean another right few good scraps for the coming CL games.

    Roll on the Hoops.

To those who go, goodbye and good luck.

To those who stay, right behind you all.

To those who may arrive, HURRY UP! :o)

Quite happy to wait until January rather than getting ripped off at the last minute ..just to be seen to be making a deal and if we are still in the CL then , then we will all be delighted. It also rules out more of the competition from other CL club sduring the summer. Strachan has already said this on numerous occasions

We have definitely improved upon from last year.

We need to be careful that we give our own youth a hope. A chance to come through.

I´d have liked to have seen Pressley moved on as I consider him a liability. I thought he was a liability for Hearts to be honest.

A left full back is all that we are cyring out for.

As for KM , honest pro a great worker, A whippet but not Celtic class.

There had better be one or two coming in. All that is happening at present is we are being weakened. Whether you liked the outgoing players or not, they provided cover at the very least. We are 4 games into the season. Injuries have not yet kicked in. I confess I'm slightly lost for words.I thought we would be more "organised" than this.

  • At 31/08/07 13:53, Marty_The_Maestro said…

This is hellish. I hate all this waiting about not knowing what's going to happen, if anything.

Even if Paul67 knows who Celtic are talking to, there would be no value-add in publishing it here -' because if the signing didnt come off people would slate him beyond belief as if it was his fault.

It'd be like when Hugh Keevins and BFDJ get something wrong on the phone-in, and the hoardes call up just to give them pelters.

I think it's good that Celtic do their business this way, saying "no comment" to all speculation - these days the only clues we get is when they announce a 1pm press conference.

    Kitalba,

Once again you are on the mark. We must have studied at the same Football Academy.

If only the rightly acclaimed twelfth man would assume the role of "good team mate" and support all the players, especially when they need that bit of extra encouragement.

I suppose that's one difference between supporter and customer. A supporter will make allowances whilst a customer will "demand to see the Manager".

It should be a rule that you are not allowed to adversely comment on a game ,unless you have seen a replay of it.(joke, I think)

gravesen, miller, balde, jarosik (whos not gone yet) have not even made the bench in recent games. fair enough, miller through an apparent injury, so id be surprised if we are bringing anyone in to replace them. id be disappointed but not surprised.
i would like to think our chiefs of staff would have something brewing to let an on form striker go, but they also might just be happy to go with Maciej, Jan, Scott and Chris. surely not?????

I'm not particularly pleased with the potential sale of Kenny Miller, he's looked good in the games he's played so far. Also we should retain an option if McDonald fails to deliver, I'm not sure Killen and Hesselink playing together is viable and I can't see Strachan eating humble pie and giving Riordan a run in attack.

This sale perplexes me, unless someone is coming in.

I'm maybe not Kenny Miller's biggest fan, but I will be genuinely sad to see him go unless we're replacing him. You just need to look at Wednesday night as to why. We were crying out for a striker to get in behind them - God even Naka could outpace them! However, with Miller injured, we instead bring on Magic who for some reason does not have the confidence to use his pace and try to get in behind them, instead dropping deep continuously.

JVoH is mobile, but hardly fast. McDonald has a great engine and though swift, is again not brilliantly pacey. For me, it's something we need. Unfortunately playing in Scotland, pacey strikers aren't always a great asset as teams sit so deep, they can rarely deploy that pace in behind. However, in Europe I feel it is an option we need in the squad. Just look at the Benfica game last year - the pace of Miller and Maloney won that match for us...

  • At 31/08/07 14:03, Dobbo said…

I agree, the sale of KM would not happen unless there was a player lined up to replace him.

I think if Gudjonsson happens it will be a loan deal, as with Maloney, a loan untill Jan, then look at a more permanent deal in Jan when there is more time!

But i think we will see a few new faces. Appiah is still not cup tied!

I think Kenny Miller's likely transfer is do do with his performances over the course of last season.

He has started well this season, admittedly, but the bigger picture is that he generally underperformed as a striker during the last 12 months, and on that basis the board are happy to cash in on him now.

What's not to like here? We get a guy in on a Bosman who may, or may not, do a job for us. If he doesn't, then we thank him for his time, and punt him at a profit (even after his wages for the year are factored in).

Personally, I would have kept him until January.

I know it’s not easy to entice a good footballer to the SPL. But we’ve had all summer to get a decent and very necessary defender to help our campaign for three in a row, never mind the CL. Certainly we can still attain our objectives for the season with what we’ve got, but I feel we have an obvious weakness in the team which should have been addressed long before now. There is still time brother, but I think I’ll faint if we come up with a decent defender tonight. Here’s hoping.

    Hail Hail

    Awe_Naw

Financially it makes sense to move a Bosman on for @ £2,000,000 but in a footballing sense he does give us another option later in games if defences are stretched and tiring. One we badly needed the other night as someone had clearly disabled the gyroscopes in Naka's shooting boots!!!

  • At 31/08/07 14:27, Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo said…

    BigSwee,

I agree with Mike´s synopsis above. He may have started good for us this season like he did last season but his goals to games ratio for a 27 year old 1st team striker isn´t good enough for Celtic and for the record we couldn´t bring him on because he was injured. That might not have been the case in reality but his injury record is a poor one also.

Take the money and run (imho)

Edward is right Walter does deserve his award. He has taken maximum points while Gordon has dropped two. Walter has also managed to regain some optimism for the Rangers fans which seemed like an impossible task, although admittedly with the help of some intense propaganda. But no worries I'm sure Gordon will rightly deserve to win the rest of the awards going, I doubt he'll get them when he does deserve it though.

As for the transfer deadline I can't wait until it's over as all the rumours and guessing is too stressful for my fragile little mind.

Had an interesting chat last night with a very good mate, big time Celtic man, who through accident of births, deaths and the other ball and chain event, had dinner with a few Rangers fans last night.

Their opinion is that they would have a better than 50/50 chance of beating Barca at Ibrox and would get through the group stages.

Now you would think a wind up but this seems to be the prevailing attitude with their fans at the mo which in part may be down to their start and 2 results in the qualifiers.

Given a bit of luck and if the team plays all games especially the home ones to the best of their ability we may be capable of finishing second. If we can gain 7 points at home and maybe sneak a couple in away games then I see us going through but wishful thinking aside I think the UEFA cup scenario is the most likely.

At this time everyone in the family is gooey eyed and emotional but having a baby costs you around £3,000 a year these days.

However, nurtured correctly this little asset can be managed into their teens, educated well and the reward when she gains employment will be a real contribution to society and ultimately you may even find she looks after you in your old age and it’s all worthwhile.

    Awe_naw_no_annoni_oan_anaw_noo

The board will try and sell you a hoopy club membership for her. They have no feeling for you, your baby or Celtic, just the plc bank balance. Don’t fall for it.

    Timlord

Quick, get her in a blanket and get down here, close the gate, the sun is hurting my eyes and burning my skin.

Like a celestial shower of stars and comets in a desert sky the illumination of a million angelic beams of colour emanating from her eyes will tell the world she’s here and even from here on my barstool I can see that the brightest of these are of course are the green, white and gold!

When the colic goes she will be teething and that lasts until the terrible twos and before you know it you worry constantly because she’s out playing with her school mates and then she won’t be talking to you because she’s adolescent and hates her parents, only for her to come back to you to pay for her wedding, to a guy you don’t like, and as you get old and want a break she’ll dump her grandweans on you.

Not seen enough of their games to make a call on it although Cuelar (sp?) seems to have shored things up at the back. Smith's teams always seemed to be built from the back so anticipate defending well enough so suppose it will come down to taking the odd chance if the midfield can cope.

Should make for an interesting first Celtic v Rangers game!

Why would we sell KM for £2M and not bring anyone in to replace him? Because our bank balance would be £2M better off? Surely not. Kenny leaving and not being replaced would seriously weaken the squad, if not the starting 11. Having qualified for the CL proper, why would we want to weaken our squad?

I really just don't see Maloney coming back. MON is under pressure for having a thread bare squad. The Villa fans are singing Maloney's praises. MON's position would be seriously undermined if he let Maloney return now. I accept that he probably thinks he's made an awful mistake but this is a big money arena. That's why he has an agent and an array of advisers. He's made his bed, so he will have to thole it. Ironically the better he performs perhaps, just perhaps the less we will hear of the great chasm that exiss between SPL and EPL, at least at the level of clubs like Villa.

    Wonderful Or Woeful
Look back at some of the recent arrivals and make up your own mind.
Personally I cannot wait for the damn window to close and I will judge any player once they pull on that hooped jersey.
One of my regrets about to-day, is
the fact that KM is talking to Derby and I believe imho he was worth keeping and I reckon a couple of faces were due out the door, long before him.
The thought of SM returning from
the midlands leaves me colder than an eskimo's jock strap.
I know I am in a minority with this one but,I can only hope that
somebody from tic stops at Kille
    to-day and brings back naisy.
Belive you me this boy can haunt us if allowed to join tfod
Every celtic fan has his or her opinion on where the team needs new faces or reinforced, whether they come and fit in is a completely different story.

BBC Scotland understands that Massimo Donati may be on his way out of Champions League lucky qualifiers, Celtic, after a training ground bust up with coach Tommy Burns.

Meanwhile, here's a bit about Mauro Lustrinelli. He is a 31 year old 1.73m tall striker. I'd suggest that this one is botox.

With little happening I thought a few minutes could be idly frittered away by reading the random tosh I wrote at the last window, while enjoying a winter barbecue.

A wee keek through the window!

With midnight approachin’, our midfield’s still hoachin’ wae journeymen, cloggers, and mugs,
Not wan Ronaldinho or even Robinho, just Willies and Tommys and Shugs.
Disaster’s now pending, there’s nae happy ending and nae tanned Adonis has signed,
He stayed in Milan as part of his plan, tae Sauchiehall’s charms he wis blind.

It’s really a pity The Vatican City amongst the great towns of God’s sphere,
Has also the weather that helps them tae tether, the ball-jugglers who’ve been placed here!
Michelangelo’s art, of St Peter’s a part, and the Pope there tae keep you frae Hell
Has but wan thing of sin, that we chucked in the bin, they created the name ‘Raphael’.

The rumours were flyin’ that we wid be buyin’ some sixteen-year-old wunderyouth,
Frae Rio tae Darvel tae let us all marvel, but reality fell short of truth,
The tabloids were messin’, he wis really depressin’, as he played with his two big left feet,
His dribbling appallin’, his passin’ wis gallin’, if it wisnae sae funny ye’d greet .

And so we unloaded, splay-footed hen-toed’d, tae some millionaire wae the dosh,
Our man wae the tan, who we threw in a van and sent him tae sleep…. wae a cosh.
We tied his haunds tight and drove through the night, we left him ootside this big grun’,
We picked up the cheque, got back in our wreck and left him for Fergie tae fun’.

Sir Alex wis fraught when he seen whit he’d bought, a player we’d called the new Pele
Wae sinister limbs and bi-focal rims and a beach ball….. instead of a belly,
His face quickly drained, his expression so pained, as he thought of those Sundays in Govan,
The stark truth then dawned, he’d really been conned, he’d bought a stuffed fowl fur the oven!

He stared at the sky, said prayers tae on high, “jist how will I get back ma cash?”
A knight of the realm, he’d jist huvtae tell’m, “I wis mugged at a wine tasting bash”.
They never would suss it, for the ‘nose’ that wis russet, after all was the man at the tiller,
They were obviously daft, and quite a bit saft,…. like that time when he’d bought Liam Miller!

So now I sit here, wae hot dogs and beer, an’ ah hope as the minutes tick by,
Ma mood will get better when we sign a jet-setter and midnight can pass on a high!
But wae no Robbie Keane tae play in the green, I fear that the windae’s nae just,
Wae Villa and MON about tae nick Shaun……my God six mair months tae August!

    Hail hail

It seems that the Naismith rumours may have some foundation.

I'm a bit undecided on this one if it were to come off.

On the positive side we would be selling Kenny Miller for £2M+
    age 27
    average goalscoring record
    Not the greatest 1st touch
probably not going to improve much as a player

In his place we would get Naismith for the same price:
    Age 22 ?
Excellent goal scoring record for past 2 seasons
Great potential to develop into a fantastic player and be sold on at a massive fee (similar to Skoosh)
    Great vision and control.

That is what the head tells me. The heart tells me no in view of his public declaration of his love of RFC which is his prefered destination.

But I have a feeling the boy is made of strong stuff and would be willing and able to overcome his disappointment of not signing for his boyhood heroes and realise that he would be signing for a great club who have the plans in place and would give him the opportunity to become the best player he can be.

Wee SM however in some peoples eyes
gave the tic the bums rush, which is a completely different scenario
If wee SM does return he might find that some of the supporters are not as forgiving this time round

November looks like a big month with our 4th and 5th CL ties both at home to Benfica and Shaktar. Maximum points from these two games should see us through by then. Don't like the thought of heading to AC Milan in the final game needing a result.

The apology from STV reads: ""On Monday, 20th August 2007, Scotland Today broadcast a report suggesting that the SPL was 'set to investigate Celtic supporters for sectarian chanting'. It subsequently became clear that at no time did the SPL confirm that this was the case. STV apologises to Celtic FC and its supporters for this inaccuracy and regrets if any offence was caused."

Paul, I see from your article that you ( and the official site)are happy with this "apology".
However, I believe these are weasel words containing the now obligatory qualification "if any offence was caused".
    Of course offence was caused!!!!
Who isn't offended when their reputation is publicly traduced.

They also describe the report as an "inaccuracy" when in fact it was FALSE, pretend or a LIE.

Releasing this on deadline day is the least that is wrong with STV's "apology", although only a naif would expect anything other than this sophistry.
