Strachan press conference, plus news of signing today

Gordon Strachan was upbeat as he approached one of the most crucial weeks in the football calendar. It is clear that the SFA will have their work cut out when they eventually deal with his forthcoming disciplinary matter after the events at Pittodrie, “Number one, no Aberdeen fan abused me. Number two, I did not abuse anyone. Number three, it is a moral argument that has nothing to do with football.

“It is a moral stance. People take moral stances every day and you have to taken them.

“At Falkirk last week the police were asked to speak to me for smiling at the crowd. I cannot add anything to that. The moral argument will never change.

Aiden McGeady said, “I think most of the things you hear [from opposition fans] are unacceptable.

“A lot of the time I just laugh. The best thing you can do is put the ball in the net.”

On being left on the bench against Spartak, Aiden added, “The manager told me what he was doing in Moscow, he wanted a defensive line-up, so I cannot complain.”

As usual, Gordon took-in his next opponent’s last game, “I seen [Hearts] last week; busy, strong, they should have won the game quite comfortably.

“I am happy with the four games we have played.

“I said last week, “Do you need to go a goal down before you start playing?”, some smarty pants said “Yes””.

“We have made a better start than we did last season”.

He was asked about the challenge from Rangers, a question seldom heard after August, “I might start panicking tonight, take a drink and become an alcoholic, but the TV is alright tonight, so we should be OK.”

As Celtic Quick News reported in June, it would be the last week in August before much of our transfer activity would be concluded. The first deal to be completed this week will be former Inter Milan left-sided midfield player, Luca Santonocito, who will sign today.

( I refer you to my earlier quote from Ghandi).

I tolerate anyones Spiritual utterings....So they must reciprocate and tolerate mine....If they do not...Then theirs were not Spiritual utterings in the first place...But they still might contain a little wisdom.

The Emerson quote? I like it. It resonates for me... You have linked it to WASP mentality and a footballing expression by Rangers... Hmmmmm....What is a druid then?

    Druid

On another more serious subject .....

    In the next hour....

I expect to hear from the SPL on the Rangers fans at Inverness.

My expectation is; no fine, no deduction (obviously), an acknowledgement of Rangers work preseason on this subject and a warning that further steps will have to be taken.

Rangers will most probably decline away tickets for a period of months, or for specific away matches.

I really dont have a clue about football finances and that comes to players contracts aswell. Ive read today how TG is holding out for a payoff from us before he will consider moving. How is this possible exactly? If a club come in a offer £2m say and give him the same money he is on with us, then why WOULD he be due a payoff from us. Why are we even considering this. I'd let him rot in reserves until his contract is up before we actually pay him to leave. Am I missing something about this whole situation?

If your expectations are justified Paul, then that will be kick in the teeth for clubs which have budgeted and are relying on the travelling support.

However I would expect the 'home' crowd to swell, causing potentially huge issues with conduct and confrontation and identification of the offenders.

I may not have a lot of time for Rangers, but putting that aside, this sort of solution is the worst option for everyone including the innocent bystanders who will get caught up in a scenario that mirrors that of Pamplona when lots of the travelling support were not allowed entry.

As much as I wish a plague on their lodge, this is not good for Scottish football.

Thank you for your response. My spelling is certainly rank and may explain you confusing me with a Ranger as some people here chose to spell that word rankers.

In replying to Edward`s query some time ago on the spelling of the term Bhoy by the Celtic support I suggested that it might be an almost aggressive adaption of Irish speech pattern in defiance of the contempt in which this community was held.

I am delighted to see that MR Twain lends some credence to my view in a letter to his brother in 1853 complaining that "there are so many abomninable foreighners here(in Philadelphia)" where it was clear that the misspelling was in imitation of an Irish accent.

Mr Twain did later amend his views (a quality I greatly admire)and I am told that this change is reflected in Huck Finn where the hero is Irish(the old stereotype is reflected in the drunken scoundrel of the father ).In linking my name to Mr Twain I am conscious of his remarks(i think when addressing students at Oxford)..Shakespeare is dead ,Shelly is dead ,Keats is dead and I do`nt feel too good myself.Or perhaps like me he could not spell.

As for those whom we would quote in support of our beliefs I can see how Hitler could be used to support vegetarianism but i do not think it would convince many readers.

    My reasoning,

Monies raised from selling TG and JJ will surely have to be used to settle contracts for both and can't be seen as extra revenue to be added to whatever WGS has available to him.

On the subject of WGS,i listened to his interview with Peter McGuire and i must say he did himself no harm at all.It was most enlightening and informative. It was also highly enjoyable.

I think the SPL board and the Scottish authorities should be asking why “The police were unable to identify any specific individuals taking part in unacceptable conduct during the match and there were no arrests for any offence related to unacceptable conduct during the match”

    Yet

“Rangers FC had voluntarily provided a number of additional stewards at the match, whose primary task was to work within its support to identify persons engaged in unacceptable conduct.

Those stewards identified a number of persons engaged in such conduct and measures are being taken by Rangers FC to deal with the individuals in question. Such measures are likely to include the revocation of ticketing rights, removal of season tickets and life bans from Ibrox.”

This implies that the Rangers stewards have been instructed to weed out those singing sectarian songs, but not to report them to the police.

This dovetails perfectly with their “don’t sing about killing Catholics because it will lose us points” philosophy.

Don't worry about the SPL decision. It is only postponing the inevitable as these people are so stupid and arrogant that the will think themselves untouchable, which in one respect, they are.

Maybe it's time we unfasten the shackle that's around our waist.

To me the further we get away from them the better.......starting with everyone connected to Celtic stop calling us the O/F and use Celtic and rangers. (yes, rangers with a small "r")

It wouldn't bother me if we never played them again.

For all the tenuous links that bind us to our Glasgow neighbors, there seems to be a vast difference to our approaches to stamping out unacceptable behaviour amongst our supporters.

Celtic at Aberdeen: One Celtic supporter is identified using unacceptable language, by a Celtic Steward. He is identified to the Police and arrested. It is reported in the press that we are to be investigated/escape investigation by the SPL. Whilst the truth is the support are praised by Celtc FC and the SPL.

Rangers at Inverness. There are numerous incidents of supporters singing proscribed songs. They are identified by Rangers Stewards who do not report them to the Police in attendance but are allowed to deal with them themselves.

Under the new laws regarding sectarian abuse are these Rangers Stewards not duty bound to report these offences to the Police?

Is it one rule for them?

Condolenses to Bolton Bhoy and his family at this time. Puts football in its proper perspective. Will remember him tonight in my prayers.

Not in the least surprised by the SPL's decision and always expected this to be handled in a way that appeases the establishment club and those who sing these songs.I wont hold my breath for bans etc being imposed on those who follow them and continually indulge in this. One thing that struck me was that the home team were also part of the investigation, this to me is more evidence of them cloudying the waters around this problem and trying to implicate others.
But what message does this send out to other clubs support to refrain from or change their ways.

Looking forward to the game tomorrow hopefully have the points in the bag sharpish then rest a few for Wednesday.

No matter how much you anticipate it, it does not get any easier to digest the decisions that go the way of the establishment XI. At the very least a financial penalty would have been justified and sent out a message to the rest of the civilised world that such intolerance is unacceptable (even if they could only pay in $5 weekly instalments).

After the Uefa investigation and the pre-season warnings, the SPL have not-so-cleverly disguised their (a) bias and (b) fear. Biased in favour of the establishment club and fearful of upsetting the establishment club. The Uefa investigation, the media spotlight, the warnings AND indeed the "work" done by the club makes the vocal chorus at Inverness even more unacceptable and worthy of punishment.

I suppose now the question is - how many "get out of jail" cards do they have left ?

I hope to pop into BBs tomorrow - will the good looks of the CQNers make it obvious who they are ?

The eejit that got reported at Pittodrie for sectarian singing has surely got no case to answer for. If he does not get off "scot-free" and issued with a written apology then we all fail. We help them their

The police can arrest an individual for singing "sectarian" songs. There´s not many songs even with add ons that fall into that category concerning Celtic fans. "No protestants at all" is all I can think of.

Yet thousands can do this 30 mile away two weeks earlier and the police do not even feel the need to arrest anyone ? and their stewards are told to act differently (ie.not to clipe but to cover up) and this is all legitimised by the SPL.

Here is the perfect opportunity for Celtic to publicise and make an example of the inconsistencies
that are all so prevalent in Scottish society. They can use the STV report which was an SPL instigated "faux-pas" and the subsequent apology. They can highlight the difference between Celtic steward behaviour and Rangers steward behaviour and aks for answers. DO YOU AGREE BLANTYREKEV ? - as I dont want a kicking ;-)

The permanently weak Celtic board of course will say and do nothing as usual. They will dance to the tune that the powers that be will ask them too which is playing the "Wee brother Old-firm card". WHy is it when we are asked to bend over - we ask if we should touch our toes ?? All we can expect from our cap-in-hand-money-grabbing-debt-nutter-staring-at-the-ground-board is another salivia tongued derrier salvo asking us to be good boys at our next away game.

WELL WE ARE WELL BEHAVED, AND WE HAVE BEEN FOR SOME YEARS NOW. SO I AM ASKING THE QUESTION WHEN IS OUR BOARD GOING TO START SHOOTING FROM THE HIP PROTECTING THEIR OWN RATHER THAN BEING ON THERE HANDS AND KNEES MOUTH WIDE OPEN ???

THER CAN ONLY BE TWO REASONS FOR THE PERMANENT SILENCE THAT COMES FROM CELTIC OVER THESE DISCREPANCIES. ONE IS MONEY. THE OTHER IS THAT THEY THINK THE SAME WAY AS THOSE THAT HATE US.

I wish we could count on some leadership that has some backbone

Unlike some, I actually am surprised at the SPL statement. I thought it likely that they would receive a mild verbal doing, thereby letting the SPL look as if they were taking this all very seriously indeed. Instead, they have come out with this nonsense, a statement that simply reinforces my view at least, that no matter what happens in this country, the establishment club and their odious support will never be taken to task over behaviour that the rest of the civilised world recognises as unacceptable.
In their statement, they say that no disciplinary action would be taken against "either club". Does that mean that in the alternative reality inhabited by the Raman Bardwaj's of this world, both us AND Aberdeen were lucky to "escape" an SPL investigation into fan behaviour last week? Funny that, never saw Aberdeen being mentioned in any reports on TV or in the press.
Meanwhile, I'm sure someone else has mentioned this, but I see the Hearts coach Frail has said he will seek out and apologise to not one, but two supporters that he fell out with at his team's game last week, apparently having indulged in a shouting match with them. Did this go unseen at the time by the fouth official?
Did they not have a fourth official at their game?
Or were his team no' playin in green and white hoops?
    I reckon option three applies.

One rule for us, selective rulings for everyone else.
    That's why I'm paranoid.

    Hi CQNers

So the Fod get let off again, I must admit they’re champions at that. It’s pathetic all the same, every team especially the Fod had all of the close season to prepare for/against the threat of punishment in one way or another and when it happens the SPL do nothing.
As already mentioned they were waiting for us to get involved.

I really am pashed off with this threat of point deduction hanging over us throughout the season. Certainly I’ve got faith that our support won’t let us down, excepting the odd nutter.
Unfortunately, there’s no fairness in this country when it boils down to it and I don’t see the Fod ever getting points deducted when that’s what is separating us from them with only a couple of games left. The whole thing is a powder keg, it’s designed to rid us of sectarianism and misconduct, etc., but it won’t do anything to alleviate the ill feeling that already exists between us and them. It’s lip service to uefa.
To eliminate the problem the Fod have to apologise for their anti-catholic stance for a starter, (imagine that) and that’s not going to happen in my life time, not at this rate.

Besides all that, I’m looking forward for this window to close, just to stop the draught.
Ok, I’ve got ma coat on (‘cause it’s draughty).

    Thanks for posting that.

What caught my eye was the following paragraph....

Rangers FC has recognised that a further occurrence of unacceptable conduct on the part of its fans may lead to a reference to an SPL Commission and the risk of sanctions against the club.

I believe I am right in translating this into ....

They know if it happens again there is a chance the SPL Commission will meet, and if they do, a wee chance they will be sanctioned by said Commission........
    BTW What is a sanction..?

Personally I am with Paul on this one it does not trouble me at all... On with the show... Ours...

    And theirs....?

A Death Of A Thousand Self Inflicted Cuts...

The Offishals are painting themselves into a corner as someone earlier mentions. They are like many (not all) journos, just as deluded and just as narcissistic....

I am all for refraining from the use of the Old firm tag. Its a millstone, its part of the history. But we should be celebrating our differences. I think we should end up in a Euro League...but not them...

but only after a G.O.D. assists us to ten in a row... :0)

What the SPL have done today, with their decision not to punish Rankers in any way, is reinforce the earlier outcome of the UEFA enquiry.
This enquiry stated that UEFA could not punish Rankers for something that had been tolerated, and continued to be tolerated, for over 100 years. They considered this to be normal part of Scottish society. I naively hoped that this would embarras the football authorities into action. Instead they buried their heads and hoped it would go away

A balding, blazered man who answers to the name 'Gordon' - may not answer to the name 'Duffield'.

Gordon used to play football for a small team on the south-side of GLasgow and went onto not score for Brighton. Following a career as side-kick to tv's Douglydonnelly he shook the hand of a man with an apron and became the Chief Executive of a multi-million pound business - he does have a business degree after all.

With all the issues he could have discussed, Gordon was last seen talking about diving. A man in Europe said he should check his facts and so there are therefore concerns for his sanity, although questions have been asked for a number of years.

If you see Gordon, or hear from him, please report this immediately. Please check any beaches and sand-pits for anything buried, plus any closets or lodges.

On the SPL report into Invernessgate, I heard the real radio phone in take on it. Ewan Cameron said that it was tantamount to a warning even though it did not say it was a warning. Someone should tell him that this message is being delivered to people who are not expert at reading between the lines. Something a bit plainer might cause less confusion.

The main impression I took, and which real radio repeated, was that Rangers deserved praise for their actions to date and what more could we expect them to do?

I thought momentarily that maybe their travelling stewards could pick out offenders and point them out to the police. Such an approach would surely lead to commendation from all football reporters, would it not Raman?

Finally, I think this sectarian farce is close to being dead in the water. It was never Scotland's secret shame, it was Scotland's secret guilty pleasure: a chance to tut tut and say "oh my! Morag, d'ye hear the likes of that?". The muddled thinking and opportunism behind the legislation led directly to the lack of definition in the law and leads to the individual police officer being unclear as to what a sectarian offence is unless a steward tels him.

The trial of the Celtic fan lifted at Pittodrie is going to be the first 3 ring circus here and Celtic FC will be on their own in the middle of it. In that sense, and that sense only, I can understand Awe Naw's anger at the position we're in.

I am in agreement with the wee dug here. There was never going to be any unilateral enforcement of these measures. Noone would be brave enough to take on rangers by themselves. We would have been lumped in.

Why you would want the board to compare Celtic fans behaviour with that of Rangers fans is beyond me.

I would prefer that Celtic do not associate the behaviour of Celtic fans with the other lot. We are not two peas in a pod, and I think you should try to stop thinking in these terms.
