I see Tommy Gravesen has travelled to Moscow with the squad? Anyone know if Jarosik is with the party as well?
How much of a kick in the hawmaws is the 5 o'clock kick off time?
Might have to leave work early and head straight to Failte!

kitalba, i agree with your sentiments, but where were these other suitors.
We were 24 hours away from oblivion - were these suitors wanting us on the cheap so would have put us through that.
They had ample time to stand up and didnt, the bunnet put his money where his mouth his.
I wholeheartedly agree with your comments on him and take what you say about others helping, however he stood alone when it mattered.
Must admit my feelings stem from a feeling at the time that some of the "rebels" were a little self serving and loved basking a little too much in the limelight, to the detriment of our great club.
I would have had nobody other than fergus do what he did - he stood by his word 100% and delivered what he said he would.
My fear which gladly was not realised was that some of the rebels would mismanage our club ala the mint.
Hope you do not take this post as a criticism, you are one of my favourite posters and from what i read are my type of celtic supporter, what is best in celtic supporters.

If Barcelona are saying anything publicly about Maxi López it will be in El Mundo Deportivo. I'll check and get back to you.

From previous post...
Serpent's Tongue, I heard on the radio report this morning that Jarosik didn't travel with the squad.
I wonder if there was any truth in the reports that he gave an interview to a Russian paper telling how they could beat Celtic.

Well, 45 minutes ago, a training session at the Mini-Estadi came to an end and Frankie Rijkaard named the men who are travelling to Munich this afternoon for a glamour friendly against Bayern tomorrow night.
The three men who have been told they won't form part of the plans at Barcelona this season were told not to bother packing their bags for Munich. They are: Motta, Ezquerro and your man Maxi.

I was going to say I enjoyed some savaging of Daryl Broadfoot on Kerrydale St this morning.
KDS
I particularly liked this gem. How old does Broadfoot think KM is? When did Vuitton start making curtains? What have oil reserves have to do with anything? Were the sub editors drunk? Has anything been said to the hack by the editor?
"The last time Kenny Miller found the target, Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Now, with Russia having claimed an oil reserve on the Arctic Ocean sea-bed, the striker's shooting boots returned in time for a visit behind the former Iron Curtain, replaced post-Communism, by a Louis Vuitton one"
The incompetence is truly staggering. The Herald truly is a shadow of its former self. Shame really.

we have been linked with both Maxi and Exquerro
to be honest I think Exguerro is by far the best player but he is 6 or 7 years older than Maxi
Both will do nicely though!

An earlier story seems to me to preclude the need for any Rumour Mill stories. Here it is in full.

14 August, 3.00 am
Barcelona are waiting for an answer from Celtic following discussions over the last few days about Maxi López being transferred or going on loan to the Scottish club.
Celtic manager, Gordon Strachan, wants a player with the characteristics of the Argentinian striker, someone tall and strong, to offer an alternative, or possibly even a partner, for the indisputable first-pick striker, the Dutchman Jan Venegoor of Hesselink.
Maxi hasn't seemed keen to leave Barcelona, but having Celtic as an option, a club with a great history and real passion in its stadium, could tempt him.
----
Maybe this has been in the Scottish media, or on the other sites guys were talking about.
All I can tell you is that if Barça release any information on anything, it's in this paper first. I have worked with them. They are serious and seriously well connected people.
It could be that we can't work out a deal with Maxi, but this means serious discussions have taken place.
-
CF - it seems he's been offered to us and Barca await a reply. Described as an alternative to or to complement JVOH. Also described as hefty and tall!
Did not do much at Majorca last season.

Kano, the 80s victory over Ajax was 25 years ago, the Sporting win 24 years ago. Not modern I’m afraid.

itz - from last thread
If you read the whole article which someone posted on here the other day you would know that Gordon then went on to draw a distinction between the "Kestrel" man and the Celtic supporter whom he praised in glowing terms.
Just goes to show how dangerous selective soundbites are and when a campaign is being built to undermine Celtic via getting rid of an excellent manager we all need to be wary and give support else we undermine what we are all supposed to love.

I think we'll learn alot this week about who's going and who Strachan wants to keep as certain players will become cup-tied. I certainly hope Gravesen or Jarosik don't feature although the way their careers are going, they'll be lucky to get a club playing European football anyway.
-
Kitalba, you don't really have an issue with me on the point of the the influence we fans had.
But,I seen then what I see now.
The board being abused by people who actually have no idea why they were doing it,apart from enjoying abusing the board.
At that particular time, that particular group of people, deserved all the abuse they were getting, not for failing in their jobs, but for putting their own self interest ahead of Celtic's very existence.
They didn't just stuff up.They knew they were stuffing up.And they kept stuffing up until the banks were at our door.
It is just that a lot of the "it is because of us in the car park that you now have a Celtic"brigade, strike me as being the same people who thought it would be good idea to boo Fergus McCann and Jock Stein's widow(RIP),and later Brian Quinn, and get this, whilst the league flag was being unfurled.
Ye couldnae make it up,ye would be told you were mental.
You are correct, there was pressure applied from the support, but as I remember it,apart from the centenary year, there was continuing and growing pressure, and this mainly manifested itself by people no longer going to the games. This action, which I did not agree with, had the effect of forcing the banks in sooner, rather than later.
If the amount of people I have heard saying that they were "in the car park"were actually there in those numbers,I must have missed a game before the demonstration with a crowd of 120,000 people at it.
Cos I certainly don't remember it.
You are also correct that there were other people involved, initially, but Wee Fergus wised up to them, quicksmart.
He new why they were there, and it involved more of the press conference type of thing, rather than the extremely hard work that would be required over the next five years,if what he promised he would do was going to come to fruition.
I don't see him as some kind of knight in shining armour, don't get me wrong.
He put his money where his mouth was, took a massive gamble that hardly anyone else would take(although DD,I seem to recall pumped in 4 million out of nowhere)and walked away with a fortune.
Good luck to him.
But it was he who saved us,not just with the initial capital input, but with the brains and hardwork that underpinned the next five years after he came.
Oh and one other small thing. He gave the likes of you and me the opportunity to do something that we never could before.
Own shares in our club.
He should be brought over at least once a year at the club's expense, and have the dirt in between his toes licked out in the centre circle by the fools who booed him that day.
A very disgraceful episode, and one which the people who took part in should hang their heads in shame to this day.
Then again, they now have Gordon Strachan to hate.

Your post is received in the spirit in which it was written.
I don’t perceive criticism, but I am not so vain as to think myself above it.
Yes the other suitors were most definitely hoping to buy back cheaper than what Fergus was prepared to put up front. Such is life in the pool with sharks.
We were spared public ridicule.
Agreed, some from the movement did appear self serving at times. But without the impetuous the movement provoked, the bank would not have dared, make the demands, that it did.
Eternal shame on them.
Let me tell you a wee story about Fergus McCann.
Along with my brother, my father took us through to East End Park for a game against Dunfermline.
It was around 1970. The last game of the season I’m sure; a must win game if we wanted to continue as Champions. There were people on the terracing roof that night.
As we were making our way to the turnstiles my father paused to get rid of the one spare ticket he had.
My old man always seemed to have a spare ticket back then.
He offered it with a hand held high in the sky. Seconds only and this little geezer looking rather distressed almost rugby tackled my dad.
“I’ll take it”, he says.” How much do you want? I’ll take it.”
My was a bit taken aback by his obvious anxiety and he gave me and my brother both a look of bemusement.
“A pound”, said my dad. “Face value is a pound. A pound and it’s yours.”
It is now this little geezer in a bunnet who now sports the bemused look as he shovels out his wallet.
His next words are not verbatim, but they are close enougth.
He pulled out what seemed to me to be the price of a house and proceeded to lecture my father so…
“Sir I have come all the way from Canada to see this game. I could not get a scheduled flight so I hired my own. Now as to the price for the ticket. How much do you want?”
Red rag to my old man who then in turn lectured this little geezer about, ‘ticket etiquette’, in Scotland.
“Face value is a pound. You want this ticket, you’ll give me a pund”.
The ticket and the pound exchanged, a shake of hands and the wee geezer in the bunnet walks of and says, “if you ever need a favour look me up”. He did give his name before walking of with that same bemused look and a shaking bunnet.
I could never remember the name. I do remember a face. It was Fergus McCann without a doubt.
Well only ateeny-weeny one. It was Fergus McCann to me then and is now, this day.
As I said on the previous thread, they should raise a statue to him. One that reflects and equals his achievements for our club.
‘Most definitely so and a statue of stature equal of his accomplishments.
I would hate to think ego was a barrier to its endorsement and construction.’
As long as there is a Celtic: there will always be a Fergus McCann.
Thank you for your kind words and in case you missed it I did get your joke.

Taxi for Maxi?
Why would we sign him as backup for JVOH? What was Chris Killen signed for?
-
-
Chris Killen was signed to be an additional physical presence, which we lacked when JVofH didn't play last year.
Any other signing, be it Maxi or someone else, will be either an alternative or a partner I would imagine. Most clubs have a pool of 4 centre forwards to chose from, don't see why we're any different!

Aha! So Estadio is the mythical Kestrel fan!
Estadio et al, you guys should appreciate this wee story...
Just back from my lunch break...
So there I am, walking down Sauchiehall Street when five Spanish tourists from Valencia ask me to take a photo of them outside the Celtic shop. We had a brief conversation in my rudimentary Spanish and their slightly less rudimentary English. They are, indeed, Valencia fans and were in fact at Parkhead a few years ago for the UEFA Cup game with the penalties (taxi for Joos). They said the atmospere was "increible" - I know there should be an accent on the 'i' but can't be bothered - even compared to the famous Mestalla.
So there I was, again walking, my spirits lifted by these foreigners appreciation of my team when I walk past the former Rangers shop a little further down the street.
It is now a pound shop.
Hasil Hasil!

Excellent piece about the "bunnet".
I remember being at CP for a game v Rangers and a guy demanding way in excess of the face value of a ticket and then being surrounded by others. The seller was told, in no uncertain terms, that it was face value price only. Obviously pre E bay days.
On MT's wedding. He had me at a table with friends of his who all support TFOD.
A bit like you at his stag night I remained silent until I told them that I hoped TFOD would be as successful this season as they had been the previous 2.

Maybe we should start a petition to show our appreciation for 'the bunnet' and get it forwarded onto him somehow. I wonder if he knows that he is appreciated much more these days for what he did.

Bhoy_Molloy - I never saw that much of Maxi when he played for Barca (think he only played a few matches), but what I remember of him was that he had a fair turn of pace for a big guy.
So could be a BIG fast boy to play along side JVoH instead of the wee fast bhoy that we always seem to think will work.

just like to say that maxi lopez hasn't played very well for a while. when he was signed my argie mates said he was supposed to be a good prospect but they have looked on as he has become progressively worse.
maybe he needs a change of scene to come good but i don't see him being much use to us. poor touch, goal shy etc don't see him as better than what we have unless we want to go down the darnel route of lumbering 'strikers'
-
the bunnets dad was teacher/headteacher at a famous stirling high school and was very handy with the cane/belt so my family members tell me.
My favourite story about Sir Fergus (should be) was one i read on this site about the locals round the stadium and the tv licenses.
BUt my favourite thing about fergus was that he stood up to the bigots at the sfa and boy did they not like it. We got told for years that we were paranoid and fergus disproved this by showing that the cadete registration was held up purposefully and as such that cretin farry paid for it with his job - something the rest of scottish football should thank him for.
But now they have duffield. Hell mend them. I was on the same plane to lyon someone mentioned the other day and sat in very close proximity of duffield as the plane sang smith must score. Boy did he not enjoy that flight, didnt raise his head the whole 2 hours!!
Does anyone know when the sfa meet to decide what to do about the rangers fans at inverness? Or like the san siro investigation are they hoping we all forget about it?

Kano:
You barsteward.
I was on my way to bed when I saw 31narow’s post and thought to myself, I’ll reply to that and then I’m off to bed.
That’s when I spot your post.
Without being lazy can I first refer you to my reply to 3inarows.
Now I am a wee bit tired but I won’t deny you the courtesy of a reply.
I believe that back then the support, almost to a man had, had it with the board.
The board then were self-serving and incompetent. Had that board been in place today it would not have been Rangers that the fraud squad were raiding.
Cash turnstile and lots of them. Maybe that is why the practice of ‘lift-overs’ was so encouraged.
The crowd was always unquantifiable and so was the gate receipts.
Re-investment back to the club was leprosy.
We were a club on the verge of the abyss. That board almost took us over.
Although there were some egos amongst the sack the board movement the ideal behind the movement was in itself laudable.
Be careful what you wish for. Where have I heard that before?
The movement for change wished the board gone and got their wish. We almost went down with the captains.
Cometh the hour, Cometh the man.
Wee Citizen Fergus McCann.
He pulled us back from the brink and what we see and have today is McCann legacy.
I agree there are some board bashers. I have yet to extend them any credence, to their woes, real, or imagined.
The Boo boys.
Only once in my life have I ever been present at Parkhead to witness the Celtic Support Boo one of our own.
Regi Blinker against Hibs.
For me that day was worse than Black Sunday.
That day we witnessed the birth of a new kind of Celtic supporter. The Celtic detractor. A shameful and very public disgracing of our club.
Now it seems as though booing is an accepted, even encouraged, part of supporting our club, for some, at the first sign of adversity.
I would not go as far as to say that those who boo, are not Celtic supporters, but, what I would say is, I personally think them shallow and a disgrace to the colours they wear and so publicly proclaim an undying love for.
Hypocrisy
Now where have I heard that word before.
I was personally disgusted with the treatment of Brian Quinn and am amazed and grateful that he still continues to serve.
What moronic pomposity those boo boys publicly displayed that day.
And as you say… at the raising of the flag….
I cannot imagine under what circumstance I would find myself willing to boo one of my own.
I would only hope if that day ever did find me my personal integrity would demand I dropped the pretence and I would never step inside Parkhead again.
I would not lower myself to proclaim one thing while indulging in the slime of the diametrical
Sorry Kano if this post does not do your post justice. If it is, a wee bit disjointed or whatever.
But it is way past my bedtime. I’ll look in tomorrow and see what you guys have been saying.
By the way congrats on your last post, beginning to look almost artistic. Unreserved ,’Passion’,in words: I love it.

Paul
As one of the so-called mineshafters I thought that in response to the happyclappers claims that we only post after bad results I thought I would wait until we won a game before posting my thoughts for the season.
I always have one decent bet at the start of each season where I bet on who will win the league. I always bet a four figure sum on this. Having seen all of the Celtic matches todate and 5 of the Rangers matches I have put my money on Rangers this year.
I have previously talked about the glaring inefficiences in defence and the fact that Gordon will spend lots of money on the midfield and forwards but close his eyes and hope for the best when it comes to the defence.
The biggest factor in this summation aside from watching the teams is that we have made a very average player our captain. I believe Stephen McManus would not look out of place playing for Kilmarnock or Dundee Utd and the very fact that Gordon has made him captain means he is now untouchable no matter how badly he plays or how many mistakes he makes.
During my playing days I became good friends with a couple of members of the current Rangers magement/coaching team and to say that Walter Smith is confident of winning the SPL is an understatement. Walter Smith took the job of managing Rangers as he firmly believes that his style of football will easily overcome GS style of football. This will only be proved or disproved through time but WS has built his team around the same principles as the 90's albeit with less quality at his disposal. Trust me Walter Smith believes he will ths league easily. Whilst I agree that they will win it I don't think it will be as easy as Walter believes it will be.
To be frank Walter Smith is absolutely delighted that Bobo Balde is being ostracized at Celtic as he believes that Bobo is the only Celtic defender capable of facing up to his new look team. Again unfortunately I have to agree with him. In my opinion Bobo Balde is still the best Centre Half at the club and should be utilised until someone better can be found although I have no faith that Gordon will address this glaring problem as he cant see that any problem exists.
They will not drop the stupid points that they dropped last year and combined with our poor defence I believe it will be Celtic that will drop the stupid points this year. I pray that I am wrong.
As to our European ambitions again I believe we will struggle to qualify. I had the oppurtunity to watch videos of 4 of Spartak Moscow's matches this season and if they play to form will present a very difficult obstacle to overcome. Again I pray that I am wrong.
Paul you also put it to me a few weeks ago that Gordon was aware of the defensive problems and that attempts would be made to rectify this. Unfortunately around the same time I had been informed that Stephen McManus was being made Captain therefore I lost any belief I had that our defensive frailties would be sorted.
I accept that I will be ridiculed and ignored in equal measure after this post.
Let me also say once again Paul that you have provided a fantastic forum for the fans to air their views and discuss all things Celtic. I am fortunate that I still dealings with Celtic players past & present and some of them have had a read of the comments.
Keep up the good work.

Fair play but I think you and a few others will be proved long, not least Mr Smith over at Mordor.
There is a lot more to Strachan than many people think in my opinion.

Last year Daryl Broadfoot wrote the match reports for the Darnel's tour here in South Africa.
For the one game, he reported from a town that doesn't exist. For the second game in Johannesburg he wrote about the unseasonal dry weather (it hardly ever rains in Joburg between May and September).
Either he never actually travelled to these parts, or the expat bears who were putting him up had him on the wind up.

Before I say anything else I should note that I think it is great Fergus McCann now gets the recognition of what he achieved and did for Celtic.
But for me the discussion has now gone full circle. I lamented his treatment back in the day along with many others who were shouted down. Fergus was treated disgustingly by the media, truly disgustingly as a figure of ridicule in many instances. Sadly also so by some of our own, but not as many as the tale that seems now to be re-told.
Fergus arrived with vision, a plan and a means to implement it. He worked bloody hard, put in an enormous amount of sweat equity and took on a tremendous burden of stress and the pressure of a million and more dreams of folk like you and me the world over and he delivered.
But it was no act of philanthropy.
At the end of it all the truth is that Fergus arrived with a promise to the bank of £5m, an underwriting. The actual money that saved Celtic and built our new paradise came from the pockets of you and me (well, not me actually as I was just out of Uni and on the rock and roll but that’s not important right now) when the shares were issued and massively oversubscribed.
Fergus did his 5 years, as he always said he would, and put Celtic on a business footing that had an enduring legacy of stability if nurtured correctly. Again, fantastic.
Again we (including me this time since I was now regularly washing and had swapped Countdown for full time employment) put our money where our hearts were and bought up as much of the shares as we could afford. Dermot Desmond hoovered up the rest. This time though we were pretty much buying Fergus’s shares and Fergus felt the impact in his bank account. Many, many millions more than he invested. A fair price to save Celtic? Perhaps. But at the end of the day that’s exactly what it was, a financial reward for work undertaken.
I see also the new photos of Lennoxtown today on KTF. Pretty apt for this discussion. Fergus promised to fund a new training academy, £6m from memory, subject to a condition. The condition was that a certain percentage of the shares he was leaving were bought by the general fan base. The shares were always going to sell, Dermot Desmond underwrote the lot. Fergus’s condition may have been noble (pursue an aim of diverse ownership), maybe not (why allow the underwriting at all) but that is for another discussion. The fact is it was not met and Fergus kept his cash. 6 years or so on and guess whose cash built the training academy? Yours, mine and Dermot Desmond’s.
So don’t get me wrong, without Fergus things would have been very much worse and Celtic’s history can never forget this, and I am very grateful, but Fergus is and was a Celtic supporting businessman and he never lost the ethos of businessman throughout.

I just have to say that I am disgusted whole heartedly by what you have written.
I couldnt give a fiddlers if you think the defence is weak and you dont like Stephen McManus and Gordon Strachan. That is your opinion even though I think you are wrong!
I am disgusted that you have put a four figure sum on Rangers winning the league and you are a supposed hoops fan?!? I am bemused.
Lets go to near the end of the season and its the final auld firm match. If u put on a grand then I expect that if all your league winning predictions are correct u will claim tens of thousands! If the other teams you have bet on are doing so well that its down to Rangers, and Rangers chances of winning the league would be strongly favoured if they beat Celtic, does that mean you will be cheering Rangers on? Let alone that scenario, does it actually mean that you will be cheering on Rangers results throughout the league campaign?
I am truly disgusted by this and can only suggest that you should go and look for a well! Yes a well, its dark down there, go ahead and throw yourself in. You are a disgrace of a human being let alone a so-called Celtic Supporter!!!

Lots of others have said McManus is a poor captain (quite how they know when he's only two games into it I don't know), that we ought to have bought some new centre-backs, that we should be playing Bobo (again, two games in, how do you, and how does Walter know Bobo won't be playing in games that suit Celtic to include him, for example against the Auchenhowie Hammer-throwers formation country-dance outfit?).
As I read through your post, I found myself hoping you'd come up with some new negative insight, just for the novelty.
Fair enough, you hope you are wrong. I too hope you are wrong.
Now, it's clear from what you say that you've played at a higher level than me (first division amateur in Ayrshire, plus on the fringes of semi-pro in Spain), so fair play to you.
Walter, he obviously knows much more about football than me. Still, I'm not fazed by what you've said because it's not me Walter's up against.
He's up against a guy that's played in European finals, while Walter hasn't. A guy who's played and scored at the World Cup, while Walter hasn't. A guy who won championships and cups in Scotland and England with three different teams, while Walter might have a rusty medal from his Boys' Brigade days tucked away in his sock drawer.
My point? Gordon Strachan knows a lot about football too. And, luckily, he's the man in charge of thinking up a response to Walter the Wonderful.
Next you'll be telling us we should have gone for Walter as manager.

There you go again ghuys trying to chase away anyone who doesn't toe the party line. I'm telling you, you'll turn this place into the Celtic View yet.

Cheers Kitalba, enjoy your kip,you have put in two decent shifts today.
BlantyreKev,I agree with you on that, and thank God he was/is.What was desperarley needed at the time.
He made no bones about it,kept nothing secret, and went back on nothing that he said he would do.
Saved our club, built our stadium, got a winning team on the park,in five short years.
Can't hold the fact that he is a damn good business person against him.
You are also correct that it was a lot of "our" money. But he was the one to take the big gamble, with DD's backing, when so few were willing.
I am glad he did.
In the dark,
since we won the league last season there has been posted, several times,a list of predictions from last year by our much vaunted"sports press"snd the retired footballer "pundit"
circles.
Like yourself, and many others, most of them have played and watched enough football to last a lifetime.
I think about 17 out of the 20 posted on here, went for Rangers.
By February,they were all wrong.
Can I ask who your "four figured" sum was wagered on last year?
You see the problem with your "couple of friends" in the Rangers management team is the same problem Walter Smith has.
He still thinks the way he played in the mid nineties is the way to go,he hasn't changed with the times.
Now we have Walter insisting Bobo is our bst defender.
Must be so,eh?
The man still thinks knitted waistcoats are a good idea for goodness sake.
I have a feeling that not so many will be so quick to dismiss Celtic this season with their pre-season predictions, but of course, there will still be enough fawning along to make it look respectable at least.
May I suggest,if you are willing to throw money away to that extent, that instead of giving it to William Hill, why don't you give it to Paul67's golf day charity,or Tinytim's cancer charity.
At least then it would have a chance to do more than enhance a gambling houses profit figure.

No one is chasing inthedark away...
The posts about wells etc are in jest.
Disagreeing with someone is not chasing them away. Disagreeing with someone and explaining why is the essence of debate and the reason this site is successful.
I am grateful for the mineshafters (occasionally I teeter over the edge of the precipice myself) - they make the site more diverse and interesting rather than becoming a giant love-in.
Also, to stick up for inthedark -
What's wrong with putting a four figure sum on the dark hoardes winning the league?
If inthedark thinks Celtic will be gash then why not make a tidy sum out of it?
I don't feel it compromises his loyalty to Celtic.
Needless to say, though, inthedark, you have frittered away your hard earned cash. :-)

bhoys - you may have missed an intriguing evening on the blog yesterday. I am facinated and to some extent dissapointed how simple statements are percieved and massaged. The very area we castrate the media for.
eg I made this statement "the very reason celtic exist today is because "supporters" like me refused to accept the status quo"
Somehow , this turned into car park supporter booing the board, calling for the managers head, calling radio phone ins etc etc..
For me , this simply meant investing in the club when the club asked for help. Celtic needed Fergus and fergus needed Celtic support (unlike Murrays "family")
Secondly, I made a comment that we would lose the first game by 2 or three goals but still qualify for the stages. I have been consistent with my views on the current defense and i stand by my convictions until hopefully the young lads prove me wrong.
All of a sudden i'm a prophet of doom, getting on the side of graham spiers , being negative and frankly insulting celtic fans all over the world.
This is a blog where we are all "celtic managers" and can make our own team selections and have opinions and insticts on the outcome of the game/season - this is why its so enjoyable particualrly on this site.
However, to suggest i take these views to the radio, to the stands, to the rags is in fact........sensationalist blogging.

when i was 18, which wasn't recently, i put £50 on Celtic winning against Rangers in the Cup Final.....we lost and i was taught a salutory lesson by my old man, who wasn't adverse to the odd punt himself....
his advice was that if i won, i would already be feeling so good that the money wouldn't mean as much as it otherwise would, and if i lost it would definitely make me feel infinitely worse.....he was right, and i've never bet on Celtic against Rangers since........when i suggested i maybe should bet on Rangers as if they won then at least i had some finanacial compensation to soften the awful feeling of losing the game, he said that was fine, as long as i had somewhere else to live as i wasn't behaving like that under his roof....

Paul67,
surely the eighties would qualify for semi-modern times?
Surely!!!

Stebhoy, thank God for people like you.
Couple of wee harmless sentences and it sets off all sorts of posts and discussions.
Ask Paul what it is like?
I am sure he would give you a few examples similar to tha last day or two.
Big game coming up,everybody getting a wee bit nervous.
Don't worry about it.

Kano,
I have to admit it wasn't all my own work! ;-)

Rt Rev,
Please could you come off the fence and tell us how you feel about inthedarks post?!

Celtic First
My apologies if I stated that McManus is poor captain (2 games in) I believe he is a poor player.
For the record I backed Celtic to win the league last year as there was not a great deal of quality about Rangers last year and no steel in their team whatsoever.
I don't belive that betting on Rangers to win the league makes me any less of a Celtic supporter surely everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Again for the avoidance of doubt I will celebrate every dropped point by Rangers as a point won for Celtic and pray to God that my bet does not win but I am entitled to bet on my belief on who I think will win am I not.
I don't agree with everything Walter Smith has to say I just thought some of you would have an interest in what his views are. They are our biggest rivals after all.

Barcabhoy,
sounds like a good lad, your old man.
I took that thought up once myself when I used to punt.(not against us,but others)
Just couldn't actually bring myself to do it at the window but.
-
inthedark, with regards to your wager,do you now watch every one of the dark sides matches hoping that they win,i have never wanted them to win any game and dont know a celtic supporter who has,who would you want to win if the last games of the season meant either team could win the league
-
Barçabhoy
I've often thought about putting money on them for the matches against us. The logic being, of course, that worse case scenario they could pay for me to drown my sorrows and best case scenario i lose a few bucks which I'd probably not even notice during my euphoria.
But when it comes to the crunch...
...walking into the bookies and filling in your slip...Rangers to win...?
Takes a man with colder blood than the toughest mafia hitman!

Kitalba,
the emergence of the boo boys is not a modern phenomena, and Regi Blinker was not the first to be booed by his own support.
I distinctly remember Davie Moyes beeing booed after he had made a mistake (og maybe)in one game back in the days when we used to get crowds of about 22,000 (early 80's).
He was just a young player at the time, and the crowd then proceeded to sarcastically cheer him when he made a contact or connecting pass. He left the pitch a visibly nervous wreck and I don't recall him ever playing for the first team again.
These (pre-blanket television coverage) moments tend to be erased from the collective memory.

Regarding your crack about me being a shell suit Boab.
Since retiring I now work in corporate finance and spend 4 moths of the year working abroad whilst flying back for most home matches.
I have never said I knew everything about football only that I had a good understanding of it.
Kano - I feel no need to contribute any further to charity. Through World Vision I already contribute over £5000 in child sponsorship and other intitiatives and I am very proud to do so.
-
I have to state that my opinion with regards to football should carry a lot of weight on this blog as I was one of the biggest figures in World Football in the 80's
It was Subbuteo mind...

Apologies. You did not say Stephen McManus was a poor captain. A poor player, it was indeed.
-
inthedark
Who did you play for? Just out of interest. If you don't want to say then fair enough. Or at least say at what level. It's just interesting as there are a few ex-pros on the site methinks.
-
Lads, Lads,
Our defence at the minute is pretty poor. Let's not kid ourselves.
I would be more confident tomorrow night if our defence was reliable. We have no dominant centre halfs.
-
without being cheeky to anyone, having played football at a decent level does not make anyone know more about football or their observations more pertinent.
If that were the case how do you explain:
charlie nic
mark erm hately
scott booth
derek johnstone
andy gray
and the list goes on
having ability doesnt make you an expert on the game as anyone who has listened to the experts above will testify.
-
Inthedark,it wasn't meant that way.
Everybody is entitled to do what they like with thier money.
Just that I feel the bet is wasted, and in this instance, charity would have been a better choice.
Most people make a wager with the hope of winning.
As the amount is obviously not that significant to yourself,I get the feeling you may even have made the bet(if you indeed did),simply so you could tell everybody that you had made it,more so than the actual expectation that you would actually win the bet.
For if you do think that Rangers will win the league this year, seriously,I am surprised you actually know the shape of a football pitch.
As,with most nonsense,I will follow the above, with the proviso, that it is only my opinion, and nothing more.
-
Serpent
I played for a couple of teams in Scotland and had the privilege of playing at Parkhead on at least half a dozen occasions and I also played in the top division in England before it was called the premiership for a few seasons with one of the less fashionable clubs.
Unfortunately some more abuse will now be fired at me by some as being honest on here does you no credit whatsoever but I think I can take it.

Cheers inthedark

Yes, who can have any confidence in the defence.
Don't we all remember the AC Milan game when Europe's best team made mincemeat of our rank rotten defence time and time again.
3 home games against the champions of Portugal, Denmark and England - what a shambolic mess the defence and particular McManus was in then.
Before someone mentions the away games, McManus wasn't to blame for any of the goals. Everybody's new favourite centre half (the longer he is out of the team the more people rate him) was to blame for at least 2 in Copenhagen (how anyone still fancies him after Lyon is beyond me anyway).
It's so bizzare that we blame the tabloids for making things up then do it ourselves. McManus is that much of an accident waiting to happen that we're all still waiting on it to happen. Give the guy the support John Kennedy gets, he too has earned it.
-
Inthedark :- Relax, you aren't the omly one to bet on Rangers this year, though in my case not quite a four figure sum (unless you count the pence) You make a good point about the high confidence levels at Ibrox just now, whether folk on here think it justified or not there is a lot of optimism around the Ibrox players and staff, not to mention fans. Most of us feel that Mr Smith has the beating of Mr Strachan, whether he was anywhere near as good a player as Mr Strachan has nothing to do with it, who was the best manager, Mr Stein or Mr Dalgleish?
We also feel we are now getting a defence that can cope with most of what Celtic will throw at it, with the exception of a certain Mr Nakamura in dead ball situations, you can't plan on how to defend them. In attack I think we have the players to beat your defence in the air especially with diagonal balls. Midfield
