Celtic sizzle to the top of the table

When was the last time we played football like this?

I am tempted to say the spring of 2004, however, while dumping Barcelona out of Europe was thrilling, even then, the football was more effective than flamboyant. The Jo Venglos season saw Moravčík at his best, and Tommy Burns’ last but one season had Di Canio with his mind on the job, but never, ever, have I know Celtic to score five goals in three consecutive games.

Scott McDonald used his dink again. The cross for Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink’s second goal was another masterfully under-hit chip which resulted in a goal. He is as good a crosser of the ball as we have seen in years.

When Kenny Miller agreed to leave us last month (he did, you know), I said that Celtic strikers need to be lucky; they need to have the ball hit of them and bounce into the net. Vennegoor of Hesselink’s first goal fulfilled that criteria. His second was another valuable attribute for a successful striker; being able to convert back-post headers; John Hartson might not have covered much ground, but he scored a lot of goals from exactly that position, something Celtic have missed since he left.

Shunsuke Nakamura’s goal was hit from a full 30 yards (measure out the cross-field lawnmower markings). He, Aiden McGeady (who was my man of the match) and Massimo Donati look like they are enjoy themselves this season.

Aiden is playing his best football since he broke into the team at the moment. Confidence, touch and speed have aligned to give Celtic a highly productive out-ball.

As I have said before, this is going to be a memorable season.

Maybe Gordon's way of making up for the poor entertainment last season is to score all the missing goals this season.

I understand Donetsk is a mining town. Watch where you're walking now, Paul. You just never know who might pop out of a hole in the ground.

Hoping i'll be just as high when I land on Wednesday morning!

Feel Shakatak will be a very good team and see a repeat of the Spartak game.

We have all the making sof a good team, with a lot of handy Bhoys waiting in the wings. No wonder the guys who get a game are playing well as it would be tough to get back in!

On that note, what's happened to John Kennedy. Is he still injured?

    Paul67,

I have a feeling we have set ourselves up for a stirring performance tomorrow night. I'm not tempting fate nor underestimating the ukranians but the maturity of our away performances is increasing, we are growing as a team and we've now added a very potent attacking side comprising the front two and our four midfielders.

We'll require 110% concentration but with a bit of luck i genuinely feel we could sneak our first away win at this stage. If that happens, I suspect come 10pm on here tomorrow the blog would literally explode !!!

    Oh and enjoy the trip...

    Hail hail

+For me one of the more pleasing things about Saturday is that when it was 5-0 Artur, the defence and the midfield were determined to still keep the clean sheet. With such a big game coming up they could have been forgiven for not tracking back and tackling with such vigour but they kept going to the final whistle.

Having said all that it's going to be mighty crowded behind the settee tomorrow night.

Well said Paul, I would like to see Gordon throw a wrench into Shaktar's preparation by switching Naka and McGeady (if Aiden starts) 5 mins into the game so they are both playing on their natural wings.

I'm sure Gordon has tried this in training.

I wondered about this as Naka does tend to track back a little more and may provide some additional cover for Naylor. That said it was in that space he allowed the cross to come in against Spartak.

Wilson seems more adept of the two full backs at the mo so would probably get forward more and be able to cover for McGeady on the right wing.

Would be interesting to see how they worked.

Hugh, Donetsk is a city of contrasts. It looks like a former-Soviet industrial town and mining is still big in the surrounding areas, but there are areas which are clearly on the up. They are busy building tree-lined boulevards.

Lots of 30+ year old trams and busses and lots of seriously big Mercedes.

Prices in the bars and restaurants more than doubled between last night and today, when most of the Celtic fans will be arriving.

Big Wavy, the ‘backroom staff’ don’t want to say too much before the game, but it would be fair to say they are all looking forward to finding out if they can do it this time.

I also had a bag stolen from my room which has really got me wound up.

I’m off to see the sights.

Q.Mister Strachan, How was the trip?
    S. Thanks everything was OK. We were welcomed and settled first class in here. Shakhtar has shown good hospitality to us. We were at the stadium where we play the game tomorrow. There are excellent conditions.
Q..Can you compare Shakhtar and Celtic?
    S. These are completely two different teams. Shakhtar play it’s own style. We did learn that style very well. Donetsk team show very good fotball and I’m not surprised they are at the top of their league. I’m sure, tomorrow they will show their all good skills. Tomorrow it’s a day of Shakhtar or Celtic. The game will show which team is better. We are very concentrated on tomorrow’s game.We are in a good form.

    There's also Lucescu report.

    Q. Do you think both teams show equal level of the football?
    S. How can I answer such question? What that means equal level? Only tomorrow we will see which theam is more brave (mine explanation....dangerous for the other team) .Only tomorrow we will see how dangerous team is Shakhtar.
    Q. How do you see your team’s chances? Is yor team stronger now?
    S. I cannot compare todays Celtic to Celtic from 6-7 years ago. I can say I led the team on it’s new way. I belive all our players are on the higher level, but I know they can’t always play 100% of their best. We can make the analysys anly tomorrow after the game.
Q.Do you think that games for the National Team ( he meant Scotland) are usefull ( good) for your players?
S.For sure games for the National Team are usefull. Excericess of the Champions League games are usefull for the NT games.

P.S We really need Naylor to play tomorrow ... Yes he hasnt been on form but he will never hide and its to big a game to be using a new defensive line.

What a fantastic show put on by the bhoys on Saturday. Rangers, from what I've seen of them, are dangerous and not in footballing terms. I think the leniency shown by the referee to the blue side is scandalous and we can expect nothing from the MIB when we go to Ibrox in October. I have no doubt that we will tear them apart, as long as we are not crippled by them.

As an aside, can anyone confirm the kick off time tomorrow? As our Polish friend, Zbyszek, mentioned Glasgow is 2 hours ahead. Are matches not normally played at 7:45pm local time? I see on the UEFA site they say it is at 8:45pm...I'm confused!

Good luck to the Bhoys and everyone watching. The roars of the faithfull will reverberate around the world if and when we win!!

    Srna sets out Shakhtar strength
    Monday 17 September 2007

    by Pavle Gognidzefrom Donetsk

    e-mailPrint

Darijo Srna will replace the suspended Dmytro Chygrynskiy as FC Shakhtar Donetsk captain against Celtic FC on Tuesday – and the stand-in skipper believes he will lead his team to victory.

    'Better team'
The 25-year-old Croatian international has featured in Shakhtar's last two UEFA Champions League group stage campaigns, including the 2004/05 edition when they beat Celtic 3-0 in Ukraine. That season, like last term and their 2000/01 debut, they missed out on the knockout phase but Srna is determined to put that right – he points to their fine home record in the tournament with only two defeats in nine games and wins against the likes of FC Barcelona and Arsenal FC. "As our coach Mircea Lucescu has said, Celtic are better than three years ago, but Shakhtar are better as well," he said. "We respect Celtic but we are a better team and we will try to prove it on the pitch. Shakhtar will be at home with a full stadium behind us. We are hard to beat at home and our three seasons in the Champions League show that."

    Defensive duties
Srna, expected to start at right-back rather than in his normal wing position, admits that the defence will have extra pressure on them in the absence of Chygrynskiy. "The most important thing is not to concede a goal," Srna said. "We will have our chances. We need to score and with three years of experience in the Champions League we have what it takes. If we want to get to the knockout stage, we need to avoid schoolboy errors. It is important to start well."

    Club focus
Fifteen Shakhtar players were in international action last week, and only Srna, fresh from scoring for Croatia against Andorra on Wednesday, and striker Cristiano Lucarelli made the XI for Saturday's 2-0 Premier League victory at FC Chornomorets Odesa. If coach Lucescu had one eye on the Celtic encounter, Srna's focus is firmly on the fixture. "The Champions League cannot be compared to the national team," Srna said. "I played two matches and I have forgotten about them already. I hope everyone else has done the same."

Can someone please confirm the name of the goalkeeper who poleaxed Tommy Burns and caused the pitch invasion at Easter Road in the late 1970's.
Jim McArthur was mentioned earlier ,but i don't think that it was him.
I recall a big ginger haired bruiser doing it.
I think he had a name like Jim McDonagh
This was the match that Jock Stein went on to the pitch and grabbed one of the invading Celtic fans by the scruff of the neck.

Also can someone name the date. I also thought that the game ended in defeat and was during the 1977/78 season. However it could have been 1976.

    This is driving me nuts.

Another interesting (or not) point is that Celtic played Hibs away 3 times in April 1978. The first Easter Road meeting was postponed earlier in the season, so Celtic's 2 league visits to Easter Road took place within 3 days. April 12 (1-1) and April 15 (1-4). Celtic then played Pat Stanton's testimonial on April 30.

Your part is a literal translation of the first part of the conference. Here is the second part.

Q.What are the current Shakhtar problems?
Mirca Lucescu.First problem is that Chigirinski will not play tomorrow. The other problem is that we did not have those players who were playing for the National Teams. They were about two weeks not with us. Of course we tryed to organise the special training programme for Brasilian players. We wanted to give them a chance to play international football on international level. So, it's not easy to move them into the proper condition. I hope that tomorrow their thoughs will be in here and all of them will remind how Shakhtar is playing. I hope they will show good play.
    Q. What do you think? What you are affraid about from Celtic?
M.L. We have different strength. Celtic is a team which is very strong with the phisical power. Their play is strong with a good organization and discipline. They have McGeady and Nakamura who play very good technical football. They present Latino American football. Celtic can play on the whole pitch, in the same way teams played when Mr Strachan was a footballer.
Shakhtar is more technical team. We have many Brasilians in the second line. There are no Brasilians in the SPL. They have only two or three. Brasilians are not good for UK style. They cannot addapt to that football. That is why, tomorrow the supporters will see the fight of two completely different teams. We are going to show our best.
I would like to underline that Celtic in away games is another then at home games. That's the clue that at home they have very strong support. That's why not often other teams can win there.
Tomorrow we will play our fotball which is succesfull for us. I will not go deeper into details but it concerns only our players. There are no perfect teams. Every team has an weakness.Celtic has it's weakness too.Tomorrow wins the team which will exploit better the weakness of the other team.
    Q. You did not have enough time to see Celtic live or you think there's no need to see the opponents live?
M.L.Unfortunately I did not have a chance to see Celtic live. We had very important games that's why I couldn't see Celtic live. It doesn't mean that I did not see their games against Spartak and against the other teams. No problem to learn the team from TV or from DVD.The most imprtant thing is how prepared is my team for that game.
    Q. Do you remember time when you played against Mr Strachan?
M.L. I remember. We played against each other for UEFA cup. Mr Strachan was very fast and agressive player.
    Q. If you could take one player from Celtic, whom would you take?
M.L. I would like to take whole team (laughin). They can attack better then we can. I said it before. I like MacGeady and Nakamura. Scott Brown and Donatti are also good players. But as the first I would like to have Boruc. Celtic is a strong team in this year.

    Great post from McGrory.

I don't like to dwell too much on rangers but the more you think about Smith leaving Ferguson out of the Hearts match and playing Weir says alot about them.
If anyone needed a rest after Paris and before a CL match surely it was Weir.
Obviously Smith doesn't trust his defence enough to leave Weir out. However at 33 or 34 with CL and internationals ahead of him Weir will do very well to last the season.

And there is obviously a concern at rangers about Ferguson's fitness. Leaving a midfield of journeymen and inconsistant ex-hibees!

A win for Stuttgart and Smith & Coisty's honeymoon will be over.

Good to see Kenny open his Derby account, wish him and Derby all the best.

Think the ammont of goals we have scored since he left and how few he scored for us when here despite his undoubted industry should be enough to stop anyone 'crying over spilt milk' should he go on and be a free scoring star for Derby.

Especially when u consider Derby's percieved position as EP whipping boys, after being hit for 6 by Liverpool, will see teams leaving alot more space for Miller to run in behind defences than would ever be gifted to Celtic in the SPL

    Try Weir being 37!

I think you are bang on about Ferguson only being able to play once a week though, seems bizarre to rest him even though he only played once. Alternative view I think is they now have so many real average squad players that they are trying to get them all to fitness (apart from Alan Gow that is).

Whereas we are quite tight in squad terms, which is ironic given the criticism we took.

Great seeing Celtic play such positive football - reminds me of the early 70's when we scored hatfulls of goals for fun!

'As I have said before, this is going to be a memorable season'. Wasn't sure AT all about this year BUT this team seems to get better and better with each outing -NOT just the starting eleven but the whole squad.

It's interesting that Mircea Lucescu seems to feel this team is better than MO'N's - your good self suggests that Martin's teams were more effective than 'SIZZLE'

Could Mr O'Neil's teams be flambouyant, well yes!

Enjoy your stay in the Ukraine and hope you bring back a good result.

And that goes to all the other supporters that are making the trip.

I fancy us to get a result in the Ukraine.

After watching Spartak Moscow at Celtic Park,I think we met one of the hardest team to beat in europe this season, and we should'nt fear anyone now.

    terrymac 19-00pm.

I put money on Spartak Moscow a couple of weeks ago,but only got 50/1,I could'nt believe it when I got 50/1,but i should have shopped around, you've been luckier than me,getting 66/1 is much better.

The teams starting to knit to-gether now,The midfield are a joy to watch, and I'm impressed by the way Aidens playing, although I thought Maximo was the MOTM.

A great result on Saturday at Tynecastle, they certainly came back to earth with a bump, after reading all the tripe about them giving us a run for our money this year.

I was beginning to believe the hype that the rags were coming out with, but I should believe my own eyes,They are 100% crap, and I'm looking forward to our first dig at them in October.

Paul, are you going over on a Press Pass,or are you having to sit with the supporters,it would be interesting to know.

Anyway enjoy the game Paul, and bring back a result, take care, sorry to hear that you lost a bag,not a very good start to your trip.

If you are looking for me to defend things you will be disappointed, I can find no defence for either the Rangers defence or the actions of Mr MacGregor. The first played like a Sunday pub team and the second in my opinion should have been a straight red, normally I tend to stick up for keepers but not in this case.

Celtic played really well on Saturday while always giving the impression that they were well within themselves.

Different kettle of fish tommorrow night. Our poor away form allied with the quality of the opposition suggests to me that a few of the faithful are getting a touch ahead of themselves. 3 points is a big ask and I would be over joyed with 1.

I was at the Caley game on Saturday, and was pleased with the performance of the team as a whole.

What's pleasing me is we're winning with a bit of flair, something that was lacking lacking in the last season,we were winning, but it was ugly to watch, but now it's more pleasing to watch, and plenty goals to boot.

I was'nt pleased when big Mick was chosen as Captain, but he's making me eat my words, still not the finished article, but getting there.

Wilsons coming on to a game again, and he's nearly 100% fit.

I feel sorry for Lee,he's getting exposed to often for my liking but thats not his fault, when Aiden starts to wander inside Lee's left on his own,and it's hard for him at times.

Jans coming back to form, the goals are starting to go in now,so things are looking up.

What I've seen of Rangers,I like very much, they are crap, and I can't see any improvement for them in the coming season,in fact I think they'll struggle to finish second, but I care not a jot where they finish, the further down the League the better for me.

DerbyshireBhoy :- Thanks but I feel that if I don't come on and be honest after a bad result I have no right to do so when it's been a good weekend for me. As far as being honest goes I'm afraid that no one, not even the host of Sparta could defend the way we leaked goals. However every team has a bad day now and then and hopefully that's all it was. My big fear right now isn't the defence but the difference in goal scoring between us.

I'm not minded to go to the pub, and was wondering if anyone knows if I can subscribe to the UEFA website and watch the game online. I'm based in Ireland, and I see Setanta Sports are charging €9.95 for it (all other games are £2). IS there any way around paying Setanta? I don't mind paying out, but three times the price is a bit much.

The UEFA website allows you to find out where to watch the stream online, just click the link along the top on the UEFA homepage. I would post the link, but it picks up on IP and routes you depending on country. The GB viewers will have to purchase through Sky Sports for the Celtic game. Free for Sky Sports multiroom subscribers, £2 if you are a basic subscriber to Sky Sports, and £5 if you do not have Sky and want it one-off.

Hopefully for you it is different for ROI.

Re the game at Easter road,I was there, and I was sure it was Tommy Burns who copped it,won't argue with the goalkeeper, although it was Jim McArthur's time.

We defeinitely got beat 4-1 and the reason people were on the park was after the incident, bottles and cans were thrown from the back of the terrace, and most people at the front spilled over the fence to escape it,my mate got his head split by a flying bottle.

But then a lot of people thought it was a pitch invasion and actually ran on to the playing field, this was when Big Jock came out ans slapped a few heads.

I was sure it was Tommy Burns who copped it,we were at right angles to it happening, and had a perfect view.

Or did TB miss the penalty,as I seem to recall a penalty being given by the linesman.

We definitely missed a penalty in that game ,but I have to admit,it is all a bit vague.
