I know if I watch a second of the huns game they will score.I have empirical evidence if I watch them on TV they will score, it's not even occasionally but God forgive me every time.

The red star and stuggart games being prime examples, one quick glance on TV to see the score and both times I watch them score!!

Will not ever watch them on TV again.

    Motherwell 1 Rangers 0 HT

Only one team playing football and they deservedly lead at half time.

Referee is doing his best to spoil the game with constatnt whistling. Don't think he has even heard of the advantage rule.

BSM71, you and me both. I am sitting in the house alone at the moment watching kids TV.

Enjoyable game - with the score so far how could it not be?

Motherwell playing some nice football and fully deserving their lead. BSM71 please do not watch. My water tells me they (you know who they are) will not go through the next 45 without a goal.

I think it will b a quite tough game but we should come out with a win, prediction Celtic 3 Dundee Utd 1.

BTW, Darcheville off injured already :-)

  • At 29/09/07 13:44, SonsOfErin said…

Darcheville off for Beasley, another dangerous player if he's allowed to play. A tough tackle 5 minutes in would quieten him down.

Fortunately Darcheville and Beasley look most dangerous when played together, which I suspect was W Smith's plan later in the game. Scuppered.

Gordon has showed his support for Wilson to come back from his injury.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/celtic/7019372.stm

"Whatever I feel is nothing compared to how he feels because I do believe that, when I saw him at the beginning of last season, he could have walked into a lot of English Premier League sides and be a top player," said Strachan.

At least Wilson is young so he has plenty of time to recover from his injuries. get well soon Mark

Overall a good performance today, but bery flat in the first half after we went one up. Things got better in the second half and we played some decent football.

MacDonald and McGeady were the best performers. Aiden playing on the right taking on the full back, getting to the by line and putting crosses in. Of course this meant we had little down the left but I guess you can't have everything.

JVoH looks like he has no chance for Wednesday, so we could be without three first team players.

Skippy earned an impressive hatrick. McGeady I thought was excellent, Lee Naylor had a fair game, cerainly no lack of effort or covering the ground on his part, more up 4 it in my view than big Jan, who was taken off injured. His replacement Killen seems 2 need a goal or 2, 2 drive him on a bit. It's a concern 4 the Milan game, could b better with Zurawski up front with McDonald, Anyhow European football is a healthy bonus as far as I am concerned. SPL leaders again, I am lovin' it.

The huns, regardless of what Neg Anon and Sean South and Bhoy Molloy, and Italiabhoy tell us,and the rest of the Scottish press,(which I thankfully hear nothing of)are garbage.

    I will repeat,garbage.

Having said that, maybe we should keep this a secret.

For if everybody knows it,then the only reason we will win the league AGAIN,is because everybody else is rubbish.

    And don't forget too.

If we manage to get out of our very tough Champion's League group.

It will be down to, purely, the following.

A/ Shakhtar have never been able to play away from home,so beating them should be treated with the same distain as beating any other SPL "cannon fodder".

B/ We were lucky enough to meet AC again, for the second consecutive year, whilst they were, historically at their weakest.

C/We managed to beat at home, and take a point away, from the poorest Benfica team to play against us since we played the last Benfica team who were capable of humping us in Lisbon.

Feel free to copy this, and bring it out to knock me with.

But I get a wee feeling I will be grinning, and sneering come November.

Just back from game. Excellent second half performance after indifferent first half.

Coupla points. Top marks for Artur, making a big save at 1-0. Also kudos to Aiden for being creative and tenacious with absolutely no protection from the ref. Kudos too to Naylor- stood up and was counted, much better performance. Plus marks for Donati for excellent pass at first goal, and Brown for all round narky diggy powerful performance.

The referee- was it Dougie MacDonald, I sit so far back I can barely see? A cheat, pure and simple.

Finally, the real McDonald- that's what we want to see!! Loved the Larsonesque cushioned dinky finish for the third.

Not a Milan-defeating performance, but very satisfying nonetheless.

  • At 29/09/07 18:13, ItaliaBhoy said…

    pablophanque,

The ref was atrocious. He and his linesmen seemed determined to prevent us returning to the top of the league. Celtic players were consistently pulled up for utterly inocuous challenges, Utd on the other hand were allowed to get away with sly kicks, pulling, shoving, you name it.

Really bad. It is to the players' credit that we are not talking about a major injustice this afternoon.

My fear is that, in a tight race, these cretins could make the difference, as we all know they have in the past.

A lot of wrong decisions, including one where, at 1-0, Scott McD was adjudged to have fouled Lee Wilkie, when he would have been clear through, which would have made it 2-0.

On Scott McDonald, just imagine if the Huns had stumped up the extra ten bob Motherwell were after? I thought he would have been a Dougie Arnott (good player, remember him?)clone, but there is so much more to his game and he holds the ball up better than JVOH. A total pain in the neck to play against.

Great result and an immediate return to the top of the league.

Terrific display by McDonald and fully deserving of his 3 goals.

McGeady was absolutely outstanding in the second half. His delivery for the 3rd goal was superb.

Other positive was the display of JJPD. He's good on the ball and arguably is more robust than Wilson. Wednesday night will be the real test for him.

Negatives? The performance of the referee, Dougie MacDonald was truly dreadful. After a first half littered with poor decisions, it became laughable during the second half.

After Kennedy's display against Dundee, I was also disappointed that Gordon appeared to make clear he views McManus and Caldwell as his first choice central defence. The 2 free headers allowed by Caldwell in the 2nd half from corner kicks apart, the chance the pair of them offered up to United in the 2nd half with the score at 1-0 was indicative of the ease with which they are easily taken apart. If that had been Inzaghi (who thrives on playing in the hole between 2 centre halfs), I would expect Boruc to have had no chance.

Our best defensive performances this season have not involved a centre half pairing of Caldwell and McManus. In my view, they are the 4th and 5th best central defenders available to us. If Gordon is going to play them, I only hope they improve very quickly.

Scott McDonald is your typical Aussie player(I don't mean Viduka or Kewell).

He is fit, fast, strong, and doesn't mind the physical side.

I said,at the start of the season,he would be a very good signing for us,one that would be much better than he,or Gordon Strachan, would be given credit for.

And I would still be waiting on a verdict for Chris Killen.

I have a feeling about him.

And despite recent criticism of him by myself.

    I like Scott Brown.

He has the attitude and desire that I like to see.

It would have been borderline incredible had there been no show of dissent at Reid's appointment.

To be honest, I think Dermot Desmond has done the media's dirty work for them - the appointment was always going to be a hostage to fortune as regards both media coverage and angering/splitting the support. I guess he felt the potential benefits made it worth the gamble.

Unfortunately, there are other unresolved issues here, too. It is widely believed that the reason Dr. Reid took a back seat on the political front is that the newspapers have a particularly strong story "in the locker", ready to print should he again seem poised for high office.

If we think the Scottish press will now accord him the niceties of protocol granted to high-ranking politicians, we are kidding ourselves...

Rolling on nicely to Wednesday, League leaders, champions v AC Milan. Not bad. Killen in for Jvoh.

    Hoopla,

I think the reason he retired was that he and Gordie are not best mates. He saw there was no future for him and jumped before he was pushed.

Kano, your post doesn't make a lot of sense, but to address a couple of issues. You say JR being a "war criminal" is a statement of fact. Really? Can you point to the court, British or otherwise, in which this was debated, in which JR could defend himself, and in which this decision was arrived at? No? Thought not. But it's ok to slander a man if it fits your political agenda isn't it?

So many of the Left (I'm guessing that's where you are from, or at least you think you are from) bleat incessantly about fair trials, due process etc etc but then are quite happen to pronounce Soviet-style summary justice on those with whom they disagree. In a ill-designed banner as well.

As for a schism- Reid is the Celtic chairman and has, despite your "fact" NOT been proved or tried as a war criminal, and it is me who is bringing the club into disrepute by pointing this out to the Bolshevik tendency in the support? Give me a break.

As for me saying politics has nothing to do with the club, I have posted before that in reality Celtic FC was founded on explicitly Thatcherite principles of charity- ie, let the voluntary organisations of good moral standing like the Catholic Church tend to the welfare of the poor. It saves the state actually having to do anything about it.

It's just a thought, but so many people today don't actually think about politics, government etc. They just read a column by charlatans like George Galloway and Tommy Sheridan and take their student union half-baked theories as gospel.

But if it makes you feel better, go for it.

corrib04 - going by what I've seen so far of Killen, there's no way I would start with him on Wednesday.
If JVoH is definately out, then I would go 4-5-1 or 4 in middle with Aiden playing off Skippy.
Riordan hasn't done anything to warrant inclusion either.

Donati is concerning me in the SPL, but maybe Milan at home is just what he needs to bring out the best in him.

Kano - I have no appetite for getting involved in the JR debate, but as he's about to become our chairman then I've got to ask - where are you drawing the line on war criminals within the democratically elected government personnel?
Of course, blindly following the Yanks into Iraq was a monumental and shameful blunder, but where does the buck stop?
I see a man who was used as a troubleshooter brought in to sort out problematic government departments as being well equipped to handle the various forces arrayed against our club.

Your comments earlier about "idiots"among our support daring to criticise our new chairman are way out of order.

I would direct you to 2 excellent articles on Etims about this appointment .

John Reid, in my opinion, is not fit to take up his post as Celtic chairman. His views on immigrants do not sit well as the chairman of a club founded by immigrants for immigrants. Were the Irish of the 1800s not the same as the Eastern Europeans and Africans of the 2000s, only trying to better themselves and provide a better life for their families.

And as for his association to the unjust and immoral war in Irag, I need say no more. I would be proud as a Celtic fan if there were a few more idiots protesting at his appointment.

    Italiabhoy -

To dismiss those supporters who believe the custodians of their club should conform to certain moral principles as left-wing, student politicians, idiots etc - or even as politically-motivated - is (1) Non-factual and (2) Insulting.

I think I should point out that there are a number of people on this blog, even non-political types like myself, currently having to exercise extreme restraint in their language about John Reid - and who are, for the sake of unity, holding back the full expression of the disgust they feel at this appointment.

If you could exercise a modicum of restraint yourself, I would be very grateful. So soon after the bombing of an urban civilian population, I am sure you can see that this issue is a potential powderkeg: and wading in describing folk you don't really know as Bolsheviks and worse is not really an appropriate way to handle it.

Aiden ..Cubist said it earlier " tux and a cane " ..sublime

Hartley was solid and grafted away , looks good lying deep in the centre

Naylor was solid and worked hard

    only downside

Caldwell is not good , thinks he`s a ball player , he`s not and his defending is questionable

donati didn`t look up for it , but i`ll take big show from him on wed

As you are obviously not some sort of cretin.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you are well aware that there has never been a "victor" that appeared in any kangaroo court you may wish to set up.Guilt, with government ministers, only occurs with the vanquished ones.

The fact that that this guy has not been brought up on charges in a British court does not change facts.

The killing of innocent civilians is a "war crime".

This is true, regardless of court proceedings.

This man,as a member of a cabinet which approved these actions is guilty of it.

If you see a man being shot in the head in the street.

Is the guy with the gun guilty of shooting him?

Or do you require a court.

I make no statements to the punishment he should receive.

That I will leave to a court.

But if you feel he must never be guilty, due to the fact that he will never appear in a court, due to the fact that who he represents is more powerful than the court that wishes to try him, then I am afraid it is your sense of justice and fairness which is skewed.

Just as you have proved with your outrageous similarity of Thatcher and Brother Walfrid.

The sole reason the man was forced into doing what he did(and I mean way above and beyond a mere football club)is because people like Thatcher existed in powerful positions.

How you can equate what the man was about as some type of Thatcherite thinking, really, takes the biscuit.

Let me see, from you we have had,the following.

Only fat people who eat chips, who therefore couldn't point to Ireland on a map, sing rebel songs.

Maybe, some Celtic fans, just like the idea of the Union, and being part of Britain.

I could go back through your vitriol against our manager as well, but I cannae be bothered.

But the one that beat it all is Brother Walfrid was nothing more than a Thatcher disciple.

He only wore robes for the fashion.

    Jesus Christ man.

    What the hell are you?

If you say what you say to get a reaction, well done.

If you say what you say because that is the way you actually fell.

I am sorry for you man,cos you need serious treatment.

No,really, for the good of yourself, your family, and anybody who has anything to do with you on a personal level.

    Go to a doctor man.

We are not a political party, we are a football club. If you don't like JR's politics, fine, it's a free country.

But if you view that banner as reasoned, fair, balanced, and legitmate argument, then I honestly think it is you who has the problem and needs to "show restraint" not me.

As for devising some sort of politically acceptable set of views to be Celtic chairman... I despair, I really do...

As for the deeper motivation of the banner-wielders, I am in the dark on that one - as are you. Sorry, but because the guy represented your beloved "union" does not make him able to order the death of innocent civilians with impunity for the political expediency of supporting his mate over the Atlantic.

A mate,I may add,who really, isn't somebody whose lead you should be following, cos he doesn't know where it is going.

I don't think the guy should be associated in any way with Celtic.

If Dermot wants him,Dermot should hire him.

And John Reid is obviously some kind of "P.R. "coup""

    Good gawd.

No doubt I will be seen to be making things worse, well by the holder of all things proper anyway.

If we are going to have people on our board for other reasons than there business acumen(which John Reid does not appear to have much of),then we should have ex players like Danny McGrain and Bertie Auld on there.

At least these guys have the experience of working for a team, instead of blindly following a "leader",purely because he was the most popular, then running away when the one you followed disappears.

interesting comments from a fan who hasn't seen them for a while.

i agree about the midfield its not as it should be, and
thought both brown and donati, are very subdued
in comparison to earlier in the season. i don't think its VOH's attitude, i think its more an ability thing.
the atmosphere for home league games is well established as being flat, compared with e.g. the early MON years

Obviously, some out there reading this ever so slightly drink addled missive have realised that I know and like/respect a few of the people on here

    Collie,

Shrewd move by Celtic and Dermot Desmond. Mr Reid will take no snash of nobody.

Longer term i think the beneifts could be huge. WGS always being banging on about how they can't get talent from Africa, South America because of the work permit issues. Maybe having a former Home Secretary on board may help lobby the argument. Don't forget his contacts throughout the world.

I think Celtic and Dermot in particular should be congratulated on this. It's an excellent move.

Scott McDonald. The boy is grabbing the opportunity that WGS has given him. He is desperate to be a success and succeed at Celtic. Have to say i have been impressed with his performances and attitude. If keeps this up then i reckon Celtic have just bought a snip. Got to remember he still only 23 and still got more to learn.

Things can only get better for this guy i think. Has to keep up his hard work though and not rest on his laurels. Somehow i don't think he will. His work rate is second to none.

RE: Killen. I think if he does play on Wednesday then he could potentially be the man to suprise AC with. Nesta and Co don't like playing against big guy's that rough it up. Could do a job.

WGS has options he could go 1 up with McDonald as the boy could handle that role with ease considering his hold up play and play Aiden behind.

Don't quite see the reason for the indignation at John reid becoming chairman.

The warmongerer tag is nothing short of nonsensical to me although perhaps some of his coments can be read as slightly 'extreme' (small e).

However is it worth considering that a career politician and long term caniet member and government minister would consider being our chairman.

That must be great testamant to the way the club is run.

Here is a story dat Fargo loves to tell....

So ah'll pass it oan tae you,so you kin contemplate it, as well.

    An American Jew in Israel..
Asked an Israeli, who was passin' By...

"I Am on my way to the WAILING WALL.

How long will it take me to get there, give me your estimated call."

The Israeli, looked at him, and came to a sudden stop.

And just stood there.... and continued to stare at him, just like a New York Cop.

"Well, my friend," said the New York Jew, What's your answer.
    I wish to know?"

The Israeli did not answer, but just stood there,
    as befo.

In exasperation, the New York Jew,
    strode impatiently away.

After he had walked a few more steps...

He heard these words... and they were clear as day!

"Ten Minutes" instructed the Israeli man, who was still standing there,by the way.

The New York Jew, was not mollified.. he was angry, at this delay,
"Why did ye not answer me much sooner?....
Are you some kind of a Bloody Gooner?
A New York Jew would answer me, without a fuss... in fact, he'd do it ....right away!"

Then, Came... the Logic revealed in the Answer..which he now thought was rather Cool...

It made him feel like a silly boy...in fact,
    A GORDAMN FOOL!

"I HAD TO SEE HOW FAST!...THAT YOU WALKED,FIRST!"

The moral or this STORY, is sticking out a Mile!

See how a man PERFORMS WHEN ON THE JOB!
It won't take long to see, if he is Able or a Slob!

Before, you protest against his selection...an' more importantly.......

I have lifted this from tommorrows Sunday herald.

Good news for Celtic as a big beast enters the Jungle
    By Ian Bell
    COLUMNIST OF THE YEAR

FEW PEOPLE in politics ever underestimated John Reid, and he was never one of them. In office, he had the sort of self-confidence you probably need if you intend to be a Roman Catholic, Celtic-supporting secretary of state for Northern Ireland. Dr Reid is what polite folk like to call combative.

His appointment as the Parkhead chairman certainly marks a change of style for the club. Brian Quinn, with his financial models and his quiet Bank of England self-assurance, did the business, literally. Celtic are in fine shape. But let's just say that picking a way through a balance sheet is not Reid's forte.

Nor is it his habit to be shy, self-effacing, or a figurehead. You don't battle terrorists at the Home Office just to turn into an amiable buffer in the VIP box. You don't go blow for rhetorical blow with Jeremy Paxman just to trade sweet nothings with the Scottish sporting press.

advertisementCome to that, you don't spend time at the Ministry of Defence polishing nuclear warheads if you think a confrontation with the SFA could be a bit daunting.

Reid has a quick mind, and is quick to speak it. This isn't to say that he will set out to create fireworks in the Scottish game. Heaven forbid. But if Celtic's interests are at stake, the man variously labelled a bruiser, a tough nut, and (by Paxman) a "pit bull" can be relied on for a rapid reaction.

Celtic fans will like that, I suspect. Reid will have the people's vote in the bag the first time he declares the football authorities "not fit for purpose". If continental policing is not to his taste the man who recently had charge of crack anti-terror squads might have a few words to say. Make that a lot of words.

He should not be caricatured, however. True, he sometimes gives the impression that he would rather pull out his own teeth with pliers than admit he might be wrong, but in football that's merely the definition of a chairman. Reid, as his numerous ministerial jobs showed, was the safest pair of hands in Tony Blair's team. That should just about qualify him for the Parkhead job.

His appointment is a coup for Celtic, however you look at it. This is an authentic heavyweight. If all concerned grasp the opportunity, in fact, his arrival could also be a coup for the Scottish game. If lobbying is required, Reid has a contacts book beyond price. There is no one in government, north or south of the border (with the possible exception of Gordon Brown), who would not return his call.

Reid, all agree, does not suffer fools gladly. On the face of it, that makes his new career in football an odd choice, but perhaps no odder than his devotion to Blair. Yet the doctor, with his PhD in history from Stirling University, will understand as well as anyone that a great deal of ancient foolishness - the polite description - still surrounds the Old Firm, despite the best efforts of the clubs.

It will not be part of his job description, but as the public face of Celtic FC, and with a noted political career to his name, Reid will be expected to be at the forefront of the continuing battle against sectarianism. He is likely to relish the challenge, and understand better than most what is at stake.

He has his experience in the Northern Ireland office to call on, for one thing. Aiding peace in the province and bringing civilised values to parts of Glasgow are, one might think, two faces of the same coin. But Reid has another relevant distinction, of which he remains deeply proud.

The doctor was the first Roman Catholic to become Secretary of State for Scotland. He undoubtedly appreciated the honour for its own sake, but he would not have been human if he had not stopped to wonder why it took quite so long for one of his faith to achieve the office. In this regard, and for whatever reason, Scotland still has a way to travel. Everyone with any sense knows it.

He will start work at Parkhead in November at the behest of Dermot Desmond, obviously enough. Reid may be his own man, but like Quinn before him he will act, ultimately, on behalf of Celtic's biggest shareholder. Unless the Irish tycoon has something unprecedented up his sleeve, that means the club's business will be conducted much as before.

Peter Lawwell, chief executive, will continue to keep costs under control, Gordon Strachan will continue to cut his cloth accordingly, and a section of the support will continue to be dismayed by perceived penny-pinching. Reid, in short, has not been given licence to launch a spending revolution. Celtic will continue to be a strange mixture of romance, ruthlessness, and dull prudence.

It will be Reid's job to give the club their public face, to embody their historic identity, and to negotiate fiercely - his chief strength, obviously - when negotiations at home and in Europe are required. Already "Celtic-minded" to the fibre of his being, he will need to become Celtic's voice.

That should be fun. Reid does not, shall we say, cringe at the sound of his own words. Adept at knocking heads together - a necessary skill in a chairman - he is less well-known for the smooth diplomatic phrase. This is not to say that he will pick fights. But running away from a scrap is not known to be in his nature.

Still, his appointment, like Quinn's before it, is testimony to the extraordinary cachet of Celtic and the loyalty the club command. Former deputy governors of the Bank of England, like former ministers of the Crown, do not often waste their time living out boyhood dreams. The Celtic "family" is as persuasive as the Mafia.

Fans should think of it this way. Less than a year ago Reid was widely regarded as Gordon Brown's chief rival to succeed Blair. Instead, the doctor will take charge at Celtic. As compliments go, that's not at all bad.

The word "illegally" makes little difference to the underlying sentiments of Mr Reid's comments. As I said earlier, the Irish in Scotland in the 1800s were welcomed with similar attitudes and that is why I do not consider Mr Reid a suitable choice as the chairman of our club.

Yes, he did have some great( Georgi Kinkladze) penetrating runs in the latter stages of the game.

I want to see much more of this from him.
I do not remember him ever before hitting a first time ball of such quality ,as he did for SMcD's third goal.It was Beckhamesque.

Alan Thomson did not have his close control ,but he hurt teams with his passing and crossing.I want to see more of this from Aiden.

Aiden seems to want too many touches on the ball, and does not lift his head to see what pass is on ,often enough.
Today he was bright ,alert ,pacey ,and had a final ball.
He was also played on his natural side.

I hope that this is the start of some consistant performances from him.

He lacks a good footballing brain at times.
I hope this is the start of him getting one ,and learning when to part with the ball ,and when to hold on to it,and when and in what area to take on opponents.
    He can ge great.

    Strange game today.

Some turgid stuff in the first half then more alert in the second.

Positives for me where Doumbe who played very well, hartley quite but efective. Aiden some great crosses and of course skippy. Even naylor was solid which was good to see.

Only negatives are the obvious injury to JVOH, caldwell thinking he is beckanbaur and donatie who vanished for 70 minutes.

I would like to see us play 4-5-1 on wednesday as if both JVOH and naka are out i would play:

    Boruc
    Naylor
    Doumbe
    McManus
    Caldwell
    Donatie
    Brown
    Hartley
    MCgeady
    Riordan
    McDonald

This is because i think it's to soon for killen and he is off the pace.

Here is hoping for donati to kick in to gear and 1-0 on wednesday.

Ps why do people leave so early. At 75 minutes people started streaming past me it must put the players off.

Peace and good will to all.

I have composed a few comments on John Reid in the last 24 hours and deleted them.

Some remarks, such as Lochmoybhoy's at the end of the last thread, have been ridiculous in my view. He said he had lurked for two years and decided to use his first post to call John Reid "this odious, most hated man in UK politics".

Lord have mercy. Is this the same "UK politics" that encompasses Ian Paisley and his cohorts? Not to mention Nick Griffin?

However, I have reached this conclusion.

I think it speaks volumes for the Celtic support, as a collective, as a family, that we care so deeply about issues such as the war in Iraq. It's a huge tribute to Paul that CQN can be a platform for debating it.

We must continue to debate it. However, I would ask everyone to keep it civil.

What a good Saturday it has been!

Back to the top on goal difference, should have been on points bar a soft penalty for Rangers.

Great result for Celtic courtesy of a good team display on the back of a superb performance by SMcD and some brilliant play from AMcG on the right side particularly in the second half - both deseved MOM champagne!

A clean sheet at the back courtesy of superb shot stopping once again by Boruc. JPDD was a success at RB, building on his good display last outing - a better RB than GC and I hope to see him start against AC Milan.

I was disappointed that JK was absent from the CB berth. I'm afraid GC and SMcM will be punished by AC Milan if they offer an opportunity remotely like that offered to Dunde United. Just as well Boruc had a get out of jail free card up his sleeve.

I'm still not convinced by CK but it is probably fair to say that he caused the Dundee Utd defence as much trouble as JVOH. A bit more competitive match practice and I fancy CK would have finished the 'sitter' that he missed. Looks like he will start against AC Milan, a big ask of a player given so little playing time in the first team.

However a good result today on the back of a good team performance. Let's get behind the team on Wednesday with a torrent of noise from start to finish. And remember, be patient!

    C'mon the hoops

Right, leaving aside for a moment his complicity in the humanitarian disaster that is Iraq.

Leaving aside the "illegal foreigner" comments that are so far removed from what I would expect of the Chairman of such an institution as Celtic.

Leaving all that aside. Yes, yes, quickly now. Best not to dwell. Wouldn't do at all. After all the greater good of Celtic is at stake, don't you know. Yes, Yes, good Celtic man, Coatbridge, St Pats no less, where is Iraq anyway, BBC 1 you say, turn it over to Hollyoaks.

(I could labour this point but if it didn't mean anything yesterday......)

Yes, leaving all that aside, how easy eh?

What, from the above "positive" descriptions could not be equally applied to George Galloway?

    Calm down dear! Calm down!

I am not advocating gorgeous George. I would expect a backlash, a schism to quickly develop. This would be totally unproductive for the greater good of Celtic.

I use him as an example only. An opposite. Celtic claim to be Apolitical. Complete and utter b******t.

For all you people who hate and detest George Galloway, there are plenty who feel just as strongly about Dr Reid. But hey! That's politics. But Hey! We don't do politics, right?

The Board have acted with complete and utter arrogance and hypocrisy.

I don't want John Reid fighting Celtic's corner on any issue. NOT ONE.

    No mandate here.

Brian Wilson would have been less controversial.

I fail to see how JR is going to be a political asset because of his contacts. He is despised by the current Prime Minister and, having retired from national politics, he has lost any of the fear factor influence which he could have wielded.

He only brings controversy to the table.

If, and its a huge if, he achieves some of the aims his supporters suggest he might, he may be considered an effective catalyst for Celtic FC's ambition but will he ever be a good man?

I deleted my previous post on the matter. I may well delete this in the morning too. JR's appointment is a fact until the November AGM. Only then will we see if it is a fait accompli.

If it is, I will go on supporting Celtic but a major part of the club will be a disappointment to me.

So be it. Life goes on.

Not a fan of New Labour politics and find alot of things in Dr John Reid's political decision making questionable at best but i also know that we all dont think alike and a healthy debate is to be encouraged.

For those that wish to get a feel for the type of decisions our new Chairman has had to make and how he comes to these decisions here are a few links.

John Reid on Human Rights Law

John Reid on the suspension of devolved goverment in the six counties

Story on John Reid's 'indirectness' when questioned

Have you missed this out of your "record"?

The board has made a calamitous mistake in appointing him, the best way is to remedy it asap.

Who is that man? I don't know. But in no other job would a performance like last night go unpunished. Yes the players are to blame, but WGS is the man who sends them out onto the pitch.

    The buck stops with him.

Let's say cheerio before this turns into another John Barnes scenario.

If that is how you show your "liking" of a Celtic manager.

God help the man who gets the job and you take a "dislike" to.

I am not convinced about Scott McDonald's ability to become a prolific goalscorer.

A striker who will consistantly score 25 goal's ,regularly per season.

I think that he will be prove to be an excellent piece of business.

However i think he is not composed enough for a top drawer striker.

I like his work rate and effort, and his final ball is good.

His goals will, form an important part of our season, however i want 50 goals from Celtic's forward pairing.
    Lets wait and see.

JVOH is proving to be an injury prone player ,who despite being the size of Frankenstein, has the physical impact of Egor.

I am disappointed in what he has been bringing to the table.

I agree regarding the word prolific but i think skippy will be a very good SPL striker and provide a decent foil to a top drawer player. He is only 23 so he has the future ahead of him so here is hoping for prolific in the future but like you i think his touch needs some work when in front of goal.

As regards Zurawski I have to disagree for me he is a busted flush, the epitomy of a one season wonder.

If e-tims is right he will be off in janury so if we are playing 2 up front on wednesday for me it's Deek and Skippy. Killen needs games and it should not be against AC Milan.

That said i think we can do a lot of damage with skippy up front puling defenders away while Adien, Brown, Donatie, Deek and Hartley run on through. I would obviously prefer if naka was fit but we can't have it all.

roll on wednesday can't wait for a game with an atmosphere. Yesterday was partially saved by the worst ref i have seen at parkhead in many years and there have been a few bad ones!!! It seemed to me that any contact was rewarded with a free kick against celtic.

I think additionally that the runs are doubly dangerous in that they may not be decoys and Scott can be picked out directly. His possession play in those situations yesterday was spot on.

The only area where I differ is in Derek R's future.

I really hoped when he arrived that he would offer a real challenge for a first team slot.

having watched him as you have on numerous occasions now, his all round contribution to the team hasn't cleared the bar.

I think your right but I just think deep down in his psyche is the bit of gallusness that could elevate him to the next level.

At the hibs he scored for fun and had the cheek to try some things that had no right to come off.

I had hoped with some personal issues behind him he would show us why we bought him.

I just think Wednesday could be a tipping point for him and if I had to choose between deek, Zurawski and Killen I would take a wee punt on deek.

We must beat Milan I would go for it. Big crowd, front third full of pace, guile and gallusness that would do me. We get one goal and then who knows.

I thought McGeady was brilliant yesterday, playing on the right. I understand Strachan's logic, with the wingers playing on their "opposite" side so that the full-backs can get forward, but I dont know if our personnel allows for that-- ie Wilson, Naylor and even Doumble dont have the skill or athleticism to get forward likd Cafu, Carlos, Oddo etc. We might be better off having Naka and McGeady playing on their natural side.

I think it's a good sign when the crowds at Parkhead are disappointed with only a 3-0 win (though a jammy 1-0 on Wednesday would do me fine!) Let the good times roll!

From memory I think I posted those words about WGS after Artmedia. However, it is certainly not a "vitriolic" post, which is what you earlier accused me of. Wrong in sentiment it may have been (WGS has admirably recovered from that early calamity), but vitriolic it certainly wasn't.

On a related matter, I see that Scotland on Sunday are carrying an article on a "Rangers-minded" type book, in which self-confessed fans give their take on the club and its, ahem, "unique culture".

One contributor is Gordon Duffield Smith, who opines that Catholic schools are "the saddest thing about Scotland". Not the Orange Order, not the one-religion football club on the banks of the Clyde, but Catholic schools.

This is an example of what Celtic as a club are up against when it comes to dealing with the SFA. Ignorance, casual bigotry, and not-so-latent hostility.

Given this, I think it might not be such a bad idea to have a genuine heavyweight, a bruiser, and a pugilistic partisan, as our chairman, don't you agree?

I'm coming to the conclusion that it would be nearly impossible to find someone to become Chairman of Celtic that would be acceptable to the whole support.

My own views of Dr Reids appointment are largely irrelevant but what has made me feel sad is the emotive vitriol poured over him by some posters on here.

With some of the comments on here you would think JR was a cross between Oliver Cromwell, Lord Kitchener and Josef Goebbels.

Whether you support or abhor his appointment as Chairman it is a decision already taken and will be verified whether we like it or not come the AGM in November.

Then it is only what he does for Celtic that really matters and that is to put in place a support mechanism for the executives of the club to gain more success ON and OFF the field.

Missed the game yesterday - currently watching the re-run. First half very disjointed, lots of wasted possession and poor passing. Dundee Utd playing the better football but it is all in their own half or in midfield. They have nothing up front.

McManus probably the best player on the park so far. Good play by Aiden to set up the goal. Donati and Brown have gone off the boil since their early season form.

McDonald has added a new dimension to our play up front. I hope Killen can do something to show he is a real threat to JVoH for the centre forward slot. JVoH needs to do better in his all round contribution - can't fault his goal scoring though.

    Back at FT :)

Quiet today a bit like the crowd yesterday.

Interesting that 'the big lie'is now starting to get highlighted but it started at a first round SC game. George Galloway and Ron MacKay outing it.

Right quick question. At the game yesterday we were having a discusiion on players names especially JPD. We got round to commonly used names (ie John,Paul etc) and the players who have played for us. The name we came up with with the least amount of players we believe is Joe. We got 4. McBride, Craig, Miller and Fillipi.

Probably more but as its quiet and im heading out I thought I would leave you with this useless piece of rubbish.....

I agree that Skippy can be a bit Novo-esque in front of goal but many 25-30 goals a seson player had that tendency too e.g. Super Sally.

What set McCoist apart from the likes of Novo was his tendency not to let it bother him the next time a chance came his way. A brass neck is a good thing in a striker. I think Scott still has a good chance of going the Ally route, only time will tell.

Incidentally, look at his second goal yesterday and note that the ref missed his wee foul against the defender. Barry Robson was booked for protesting that and he had a point.

My brother (purveyor of suspect information to this household) told me that yesterday's ref was an ex St. Mungo's pupil. I'm glad I turned down the chance of being schooled there.

Who would we vote as the best ref in Scotland? Or, to phrase that more accurately, who is the least poor ref in Scotland?

I think it's still Brian McGinley.

Better second half performance yesterday. Brown and McGeady stepped up their game. Good hat trick from McD, will do his confidence no harm. Killen looks a bit cumbersome but probably needs games. Naylor had a steady game. Sno always looks like he is playing a 5-a-side game. Good result and another clean sheet at home. We will need a better performance on Wednesday

Well, when this is the standard of debate ranked against those who have genuine, heartfelt misgivings about the latest news from our great club, then you have to wonder.

Why such venom from the pro-Reid crowd? There man will be in place soon - no petition or placard will alter that outcome. You should be happy.

But when a Kano, Estadio, CardiffBhoy or Monteblanco come onto this site to venture an opinion that deviates somewhat from the board position, they are vilified.

Personally, I will ignore the man; it's all he deserves. It's unlikely he'll lose sleep over that, or of some of the opinions expressed on here - can't imagine he loses sleep over much. I will continue in my naive belief that the most important ambassadors at Celtic Football Club are Gordon Strachan, Stephen McManus, Artur Boruc, Massimo Donati, and the rest...

Roll on Wednesday (1-0 to the Hoops). Hail Hail to you all.

I understand there is an online petition set up for those opposed to the the appointment of John Reid, the despicable Blairite politician, to the Chairman's position at Celtic.

I would be enormously grateful if anyone can point me in the direction of this petition, which I would most enthusiatically sign.

The day this appointment was made will, in my view, go down as one of the worst days in the history of this great club of ours!!!!!!

    Hi,

Not posted for ages. Thought i'd back up what one poster said last night about playing our left and right midfielders on their natural side.

yesterday by playing mcgeady on his natural side and playing the more defensive hartley on the left we did not need to have doumbe and naylor feeling like they had to bomb forward and get crosses in.

this meant they were just defending. no more gaping holes at the back.

i think until naka is back playing hartley on the left is wise as naylor needs a bit of help and protection at the moment.(from us too!!)

jvoh seems to be getting it tight the now but when you've got our left and right midfielders now getting to the by-line and whipping crosses back into the box he's going to get you goals.
the supply he'd been getting amounted to these high looping crosses from naylor which were no good to him.

defenders will mop these kind of balls up all day. sutton and hartson didn't like these crosses.
they would have been the first to tell agathe and thomson to get to the by line first.

our first goal proved it yesterday.
our third for skippy proved the benefit of having mcgeady on his natural side.

by playing this system we have better crosses in the box AND protection for our full backs.

On the appointment of John Reid my only concern is when in his lifetime has he managed a company?
In Brian Quinn we had a former Bank of England manager.

He has a hard act to follow.

    Hi everyone,

Just a wee word. I’ve lost a bit of my usual interest in CQN recently due to too many numpties telling us how and why we’re so rotten.

TODAY WE GOT ANOTHER VALUABLE 3 AWAY POINTS.

I would have thought that our big, experienced JVoH would have been the man to do the business at the scoring end. I cannot believe seeing Scott MacDonald, a young, reasonably cheaply acquired, standby striker turning out to be the sensation that JVoH was expected to be. I’m so glad that Gordon Strachan had the foresight and nous to get this player. And not even that, he got him before Rangers, just like Scott Brown, and deprived our greatest rivals of these acquisitions who, I am convinced, will eventually go a long way to gaining our three in a row.
In my opinion, the team has not achieved what they could have, I thought our midfield would have been so potent it would have delivered our strikers with so many opportunities to score that it would have been just a matter of how many would they put in the net. This league campaign has turned out to be somewhat different, not really inasmuch as Rangers are stronger – we expected that anyway – but through a very vulnerable defence as a result of injuries, which has put the strain on the whole team.
We are blessed with a young striker who is scoring freely to win us points and matches, even in the Champions League. Who would have believed that Scott MacDonald would turn out to be THE Celtic hero so early in the season. You must remember, once again Celtic has been blighted with extra-ordinary injuries in the defence. Things haven’t been going our way, or as Gordon Strachan would have wanted.
It has been stated to death, and we all know, we wanted defensive cover. And I am sure that Gordon Strachan would have wished that, too, but couldn’t get that player that he required to come and play in Scotland (if it weren’t for the SPL, who wouldn’t want to play for Celtic?).
Going back to my opening sentence, although I read now and again what’s going on here, I just couldn’t be assed reading “supporters’” comments who IMO are simply incapable of genuinely supporting their team but take more pleasure in deriding our manager, certain players, and our board. I just couldn’t be bothered reading the regurgitated nonsense after a defeat. I ask myself how often is this going to happen: after each game even if we win it? When we lose? Or drop points? Or play badly? Or someone deems that someone has been played out of position? Or the team formation is not to someone’s taste? I ask you how often has Gordon Strachan made the substitution that has won us the game – another three points in the bag. These substitutions aren’t duly praised, but his non-substitutions are discussed at length. It disgusts me.

I just wanted to get that off my chest - like everyone else says on here - after not posting for a while.

Now, I’m looking forward to Benfica and somehow I want Celtic to win this game not just for Celtic’s sake, though, but so that I can enjoy reading this blog again, which means a lot to me as I live outside Scotland. I think some of you have got a problem. Maybe it sounds cheap, but get yourselves a life, get yourselves a girlfriend, if all you’ve got to do is moan, even though we are sitting top of the league and don’t have the worries you would seem to prefer us to have.

    HHBhoy
