Celtic with a point to prove in Donetsk

Donetsk is a city around twice the size of Glasgow, in that bit of the map where Europe and Asia become indistinguishable. The lack of bars, postcards, restaurants, or even a taxi rank at the only airport, indicate that the locals do not have the social life many in the west take for granted, but they have a very important football team.

Shakhtar Donetsk is the focus of this city and the surrounding area. The club is a representation of the identity and aspirations of a people. Tonight, Celtic play in the very heart of this identity.

The locals have confidence in their team. They remember when Celtic played here three years ago, and they know about the poor away record Celtic have in the Champions League group stage, but the recent draw in Moscow has caused some concern, few are convinced that Shakhtar are a better team than Spartak.

The Celtic players are absolutely desperate to get onto the field. There is a confidence about them; they know the size of the challenge and they feel they have a point to prove. A point may be proof enough that this Celtic team can progress from the group stage.

With all the international excitement this game has arrived before I'm quite ready for it :-)

Really looking forward to tonight's game, my personal target for the Bhoys is 4 points from the opening 2 games so we'll see how tonight goes.

Strikes me there is only one decision for the manager to make and that is whether to sacrifice Aiden McGeady for Paul Hartley. Given his use of substitutes I'd be happy to see Paul Hartley start and have Aiden as the impact option in the 2nd half.

    Paul,

One change from saturday makes sense. Paul Hartley back to help defend down the flanks and break up the midfield play from them.

Keep it tight and then unleash Aiden to help carry the play to them from 60 minutes onwards.

    2-1 to the hoops.

Hartley for Aiden is the obvious change as they will try to get behind Naylor like Spartak did.

Here's some light relief from an article on pork pies, page 19 of today's Metro :-

" Bob Farrand, chairman of the Guild of Fine Foods, says the new pies are as epicurean and as regionally diverse as fine wine : 'Ten years ago, pork pies were mass-produced for the service station and the lowest common denominator - every conceivable sludge was in there. Now there are huge regional variations and it's artisan. The winner, Walter Smith's pigs are from 5km dow the road and are free range. He only uses the belly and shoulder, a lovely combination of dark and light meat. "

    Try Walter Smith's prize-winning pie at www.waltersmith.co.uk

    The updated co-eff for Scotland

Our Country's co-eff is the springboard for Celtic to go straight into the Group Stage and it's good that Scotland has moved up one position but what we need is for Celtic to make it through to the final of the C.L., for Rangers to reach the semi-finls of the UEFA CUP and Aberdeen to win the UEFA CUP.

Well, it seems to be pretty unanimous. No change except Hartley to start for McGeady. Remember all those debates about our best team? What happened to them?

Anyway, if we've read Gordon's intentions right it'll be the first time. Be prepared for a surprise.

Someone asked me an hour ago if I'd settle for a draw now.

    No way.

A draw would be a good result, but given the first 3 games we've got we need a win. And can get one.

What about Hartley in for JVH,and going 4-5-1?

This is a big night for Lee Naylor.A big game from him defensively could set up the whole campaign.

I would settle for a draw;that is how ACM would approach this tie,and set out their stall accordingly.

If we win it'll go down as the greatest rsult in Scottish football for nearly a week!

I think JVofH is vital tonight, as I don't believe Scott McDonald would have made as impressive a start if it wasn't for JVofH's leadership.

He has, I think, been unfairly criticised so far this season and the goals are starting to flow. I would think he's our most experienced Champions League player tonight?

Chelsea will begin their European campaign at a sparsely populated Stamford Bridge, a familiar sight at a club where the number of seats outstrips the demand for tickets.

There will be nearly 10,000 empty seats, even though prices have been slashed due to the low demand. An adult ticket will still cost £36, with children and OAPs able to watch European football for £18.

Mourinho added: 'If we have Barcelona, Real Madrid or Inter Milan it's sold out. People don't look at Rosenborg in the same way as I look at them. The normal fan probably thinks it's an easy job, but I don't agree. The prices are not the best for them.

'The motivation for the fans is the Premiership and the latter stages of the Champions League. They don't look at the group stages with the same importance.'

I do hope you are right. I see only in JVOH a slow moving guy who is not to keen to be involved in the heat of the battle, who wins not enough balls in the air, who consistently makes stupid fouls and does not give the 100% that most of the Bhoys give.

Re. McDonald, I think that the other side of the coin is more accurate, i.e. it is McDonald who is helping JVOH score goals.

I would, without hesitation, play McD. up front on his own with Hartley replacing JVOH but playing in a more midfield role. However I think that GS favours your thought process and if that is what happens I hope JVOH has a blinder.

I think that playing 1 up front in that fashion is half way to admitting that you can't win the game. I think JVofH is often overlooked in his importance to our game, certainly I don't think we'd have been as impressive in the 2nd half of the 2nd leg against Spartak without his leadership. McDonald has to score more goals before he can be trusted with our hopes.

2 up front with solidity in midfield and the option of Aiden off the bench is the way to go I think.

Now in fully excited, pre match preparation mode!

I think Jan has been great so far this season. He is scoring for fun and being very clinical. He has a few assists also. The thing I'm happy about is that he's doing what no Celtic striker did last year and that is staying in the middle. Too often last season we had two strikers dropping off or drifting wide giving the opponents centre backs an easy game. I don't want him running around like a blue ar*ed fly knackering himself out. I want him playing with his head like has been doing so far very effectively.

Deadline to register for the games tonight is 19:30 this evening. Sorry it's short notice but i'm sure there's a few guys out there with more than enough time on their hands.

I really don't want to see a 4-5-1 tonight, certainly not if JVOH is the lone striker. McDonald could do an OK job here but there is always the risk that the ball wont stick and the team gets pinned back for 90 minutes, restricted to shots from outside the box.

Many thanks indeed -- cheers, gentlemen. Can now avoid work all afternoon by sifting through all that information. Might take your advice on the Kilburn one, Wavy. Marquis of Granby was too full last time we went there.
    Confident, btw.

    Aw Naw,

Not your fault but that celtic bars page is woefully out of date and a few of those london boozers have either shut down or become gastropubized......

My steers further up the page are all presently functioning celtic boozers...

    hail hail

UEFA.com is a shabby website. Anyway, just purchased the game for $7.95. There were two options Setanta for $9.99 and ESPN for $7.95.

Also checked out Moscow for hotels for the finals - OUCH. Cheapest Marriott was $700/night. Are the bhoys worth it - of course. Just won't be sharing that particular piece of intel with Mrs MN :)

True, Wavy, and thanks to this blog I was recently spared a wild goose chase over Vauxhall/Kennington way, where I gather the Hoops Bar is no more.
    Thanks again!

Malone19-pinned back for 90 mins, restricted to shots from outside the box-up steps Naka to ping the ball into the postage stamp corner from 25 yards;cue bedlam from the banks of the Don to the banks of Loch Lomond!

Hope all the Bhoys in Donetsk have a great time, and get home in one piece. The Ukrainian Polis do not have the best of reputations, something they will need to work on for Euro2012.

    listen to Big Wavy.

I´d be flabbergasted if it´s not on in the Cock Tavern, Marquis of Granby or the Yukatan

If Shaktar see us come out in a 4-5-1 they'll be all over us, knowing we are looking for a draw.

I just can't see Mr. Strachan starting our campaign off this way.
It's got to be 4-4-2, with Jan and Skippy upfront, let skippy run at them and unsettle them, our midfield will support the attack and put them on their back heels.

C'mon the BHOYS! TIME TO CRACK THE NUT OF THE AWAY GAME HOODOO!

I've just listened to 51 Robyn Hitchcock tracks on the bounce so I badly need a beer.

Could anyone suggest a bar in ML2 where a down-at-heel, nerves-and-gout-and-diarrohea-plagued Celtic fan might purchase a pint of real ale for 25 bob ?

I've just got back from the butcher and paid £150 for 8 legs of venison.

    Is that too dear?

Agreed, ANNAOAN. Been there a few times; just that they are not answering their phone. Can't leave until soon before KO (and that's without distracting myself all afternoon on CQN!)so just wanted to make sure. Been in the Yucatan often enough now too, but that's a bit further away from me and a fair step from the nearest Tube.

Another topic I meant to comment on at the weekend but wasn't fast enough: it's pleasing to see (from comments, the occasional highlight clip and the "old media") that our captain is getting better and better. Is the captaincy bringing out the best in him?

Good time 2 b a celtic fan at the minute, back on top, playing well, new signings improving the team, a chance in Champions league, long may it continue.
Rangers supporting buddies not so full of themselves after weekend's results.
Thanx again 4 this site, read Bill Leckie's report on Celtic v Inverness game, another reminder why i gave up reading the papers and started using this site.
    Roll on kick off.

Looks like you have a few names already, so I added my name to the list.

I have a feeling the blog is going to be quiet later on during the game, what with a few over in Donetsk, and plenty looking for a pub!

So, if anyone needs some text commentary for the game, i'll be home and sober and willing to type updates.
