Hail Hail ;- I couldn't think on what else to write quickly, not that I'm like any of those petty people who want first post or mention it when they do :-)

edward
you were too quick and i didn't like coming
second LOL:)
-
I hope that that is your only first of the season Edward!!!
I wonder who will be dandering around Dens Park as the match referee this evening?
Interesting Paul that Dundee are more like a basketball team than a football one. Watching Barcelona´s Iniesta, Xavi, Messi and Deco the other day however I felt relieved that the likes of Aiden, McDonald, Naka and Hartley can flourish. You do need a few big guys around however like Mick, Donati and Jan.
Incidentally if we do score tonight, I NEVER take anything for granted, it would be nice if our player ran to receive the accolades of either his team mates or the travelling support.
Caldwell´s antics at the weekend were infantile in the extreme. Those gestures may have been funny first time around but we have all seen them and Gary should be looking to please his own club not taunt his old club.
To my recollection the first time I ever saw the finger raised to the lips to highlight the silence of the home crowd was Gabriel Batitusta playing for Roma against Barcelona in the Camp Nou a good few years ago. Had it been done before?
-
Thanx Paul 4 a new article, I was getting depressed reading all the negative postings about the defence and our goals conceded record. I did try 2 contribute my thoughts but they got lost in cyberspace, I think.
Anyway some of us need 2 get real. The team is doing not 2 bad, we r going 2 challenge 4 3 in a row, we have a chance in the Champions League, we generally score more than we lose, and it's good fun going 2 c Celtic again. What more do we want?
If people r not pleased just now how about when they realise that Rangers could b better than us, could do better in europe than us and could stop us doing 3 in a row?
-
Any sign of BB or JJ in our line-up?
Whoever plays, let's win so that the treble is still on.

I am now looking for a house in

See Charlie Grant made his comeback in the reserves yesterday. He and Simon Ferry seem to be the great hopes. If they do get the chance, the support has to get behind them. I believe both have been out for about a year.

Good to read that Naka could be fit for the AC Milan tie. He needed a rest.
-
Mickybhoy, I know what ur saying, Shaktar pumped us and we dropped 3 points against Hibs. However I don't think these results merit the level of criticism directed at the team. I think that as a support more of us need 2 learn to calm down a bit. I thought we might get a result against Shaktar but it wasn't 2 b, as 4 Hibs, we lost and that's that. B4 u no it the media will pick up on these negative vibes and promote them all the more, that is what it does.
I am not suggesting being in denial about the difficulties facing our team however I think we should try enjoying what we do have because it can change very quickly.
I reserve the right 2 change my tune should we hit a horrendous run of form.
By the way prediction Dundee 2 Celtic 2 Celtic win 5-4 on penalties after extra time.
Enjoy the game
Hail Hail.

Brown--Donati--Sno--Riordan

why is doumbe not playing?
-
No Doumbe tonight.
didn't see Hibs game but by all reports he did well so why not even the bench tonight?
Looks like Caldwell at full back????
WHAT?
-
Unreal. Caldwell at right back. Naylor playing JVOH playing and Brown right midfield.
What a load of balls.
-
CH67 are claiming Big Doumbe is injured. We wont get much going forward from Gary at RB but he should at least be solid defensively. Time for Riordan to rise to the challenge and Sno as well.
-
wgs confirms doumbe injured
hmmm
-
10 mins into the BBC Scotland coverage and no mention of the word "crisis" in relation to Celtic. It can't be far of though ....

Eh? You have seen Caldwell at right back have you?
We are still much stronger in all areas and will win but this formation will teach us nothing.
You are meant to learn from your mistakes, not repeat them.

-
Big WAvy @ 17:20 - As ITZ responded at 17:20 Naylor looked like he had won the lottery when he signed for us, and as you commented there definately seems to be some anxiety creeping into his game, my suggestion is to look at last season and this - what's the difference, most obvious is that Aiden's almost permanently in front of him now, not last season (Lennys gone as well)
Maybe its too simplistic but I can't put it all down to the number of games or the ridiculous number of bad tackles (assaults!) he takes with our MIB.
We will see how it pans out when he plays with someone else in front of him - that could have been what WGS could have been trying, for ten minutes anyway, in Donetsk.

-
Corner Celtic from long throw into Box. Riordan takes, keeper clears.
-
McManus beat in air, Dundee have posession. Bit scrappy. (how do you spell posession? I've had a few tonight)
-
Riordan gets a half chance away, but weak.
-
Riordan gets another shot away, keeper saves then a scrambled effot by JvOH (I think). Ball cleared
-
9 mins gone, 0-0
-
Rae has put himself on the bench tonight for Dundee. No backup keeper to accomodate him.
-
Good strength by Sno to break up a Dundee attack. Celtic break but it brakes down with Brown
-
spelling poor ronight :(
-
Celtic dominating, but with no clear goalscorng oportunties.
-
Its a big back 4 for Dundee. Celtic not getting much change from them in the air
Hibs 1 - 0 Motherwell

Hibs & Rangers both scored
-
Good opportunity for Dundee after a knock down but eventually peters out for a throw to Celtic
-
Great updates Mike.
-
East Fife 0 - 1 Rangers (Novo)
-
Celtic defence not looking to great in the air so far. Dundee winning their fair share
-
Feels a bit 1 paced from Celts so far.
Sno had a chance of a shot but dwelled to long, eventally plays the ball backwards and attack breaks down.
-
Caldwell never offside
-
Good feet from Brown in the box but eventually disposessed
-
Sno limping after a fall. Dundee free kick after kennedy molests Dundee player in the air
-
Boruc lining up his wall. 5 man wall.
-
hits post. Boruc beaten. Out for a corner.
-
Dundee free-kick hits the post, resulting corner hits the bar!!!
-
Boruc nowhere for the cross. Off bar again. Phew!!!!
-
Celtic have ball in Dundee half now. Retaining posession.
-
Dundee hit the post and then crossbar within 30 seconds, from a free kick and then from a corner.
Will maybe waken us up.
-
Motherwell now 2-1 up against Hibs
-
Hib 1 - 2 Motherwell
-
Boruc sclaffs far too many cross balls for my liking.
-
Good cross from Naylor after steady build up play from Celtic and Donati. Cut out
-
Dundee attack, cross just goes over the bar.

Hibs 1 - 3 Motherwell

Motherwell now 3-1 up again ra Hibees

Sir Paul
Celtic are playing like the underdogs...
Absolutely bereft of ideas.
Were very fortunate..no make that kangin'... not to lose a goal...
Naylor's distribution is catastrophic... not to the opposition.... that of course, is a given
Kojo.

Good delivery by Riordan from free kick. mcDonald helps it on its way
DUnd 0-1 Celt

If we go on to score a few more, I think Rae will be on to try and injure a few of our players :)
-
Great save by Boruc to deny Dundee.
Thats better big man

Great save from the Pole in the Goal! Back to his old self!

Sir Paul....
Macko scores... Dundee 0 Celtic 1
Is ma face RED?
"Sorry aboot that... C.B.?"

Nearly the equaliser. Boruc leaps like a salmon to clear ball. Where was the defence?
-
Now that's one dog unsure of his own identity! Wonder why???
-
good attacking play by Celtic with Riordan feeding McDonald but his pass into the box easily cut out.
-
Defence struggling with their big lads on cross-balls.
Pains me to say it, but we need a Bobo in there.... :-(

Celts playin some good stuff up to the edge of the box but final ball has been poor.

Another good save fae big Artur!

Decent effort by Swankie from free-kick again. Boruc deals with comfortably to give away corner.
BBC commentator needs his head examined comparing the Dundee player to Nakamura!!
Get a grip son

Again thanks for earlier Mike, but I am now watching the game online :-)
-
Celtic not having it all their own way tonight
Partick 0 - 1 Aberdeen

Almost a great ball from Riordan to play JVoH in, just too much on it. Riordan has looked OK tonight.

GOAL Manchester United 0-1 Coventry

The Dundee No 4 is having a great game so far. Defence struggle to get the ball off him when he runs at them

Another chance falls to Dundee after the free kick but Celtic get a block in, then balls goes over for a goal-kick
-
Caldwell in book for persistent fouling

Half time: Dundee 0-1 Celtic
Dundee have not looked like lower league opposition. Celtic opened well but then faded.
Good headed goal from McDonald.
Collie, why don’t you try that red face trick again, I’ll be happy to see a second goal, this is not comfortable viewing.
Dundee are looking a lot like
Does anyone know who the far side assistant ref is?

If Evander is being dominated it is only because he feels it necessary to step back into defence and help. This is the worst defence in a long long time. What hope have we in CL if we can't contain an immobile lumbering piece of flesh that is the Dee centre forward ? And this is with the "class" defender Kennedy. Panic in the penalty box. Ooh and Caldwell as a right back ? Plllleeease !!
-
Malceye
You were obviously hit on the head with a Gary Caldwell when you were wee.
Let's keep the whingeing about him until he actually does something wrong!
-
we're playing a second rate team and they are puttin us under pressure in the box with their height and strength.
No one standout for Celtic except perhaps Mcdonald and Boruc (although Boruc flappin at crosses).
Team 3 may be pretty when Naka is in the team but as a defending unit we are simply awful.
I would stick Balde back in there until January to give us some presence. I dont care if he cant play football but he can defend!!
If a team is incapable of defending - the insecurity runs through the entire team.
Strachans team 3 is not the finished article until he buys a physical presence (midfield and Defence) - its like we are building a fancy house on sand!
-
Sir Paul...
Even as I did it... I thought...
It reminded me of the ire expressed by my Sainted Ma....
"Every time, I hing oot ma Waashing... it dampt well starts tae rain!"

Celtic are atrocious in winning high balls...
That includes Big(?) Jan.... in spades.
He is a WOOOSE!

apologies for being so neg. but after three years of team building i feel once again we have potential but the board bever delivers the real deal to be a force in Europe
-
Can anyone explain to me why Chris Killen isn't starting?
Surely he was bought to play games like this and gove JVOH a rest.
This was a chance to give him 90 minutes so that he can sharpen up with the chance of breaking his duck.
Also, anyone know how bad the injuries to Doumbe and McGeady are?
-
stebhoy
i`ll accept SPL FORCE
not sure we`re that at the moment
defence is a nightmare

60 mins. Goal for Celtic, Vennegoor, cut back from McDonald.

2-0 - Dinky & JVOH combo

Guys,
I'm glad some of you aren't at the game. I hope when you are the anxiousness displayed in the posts isn't exuded onto the pitch!
We'll win this by 3.

I got the idea now!
Fate is playing the ole... Contrary Mary Shtick!
Kojo.
-
It may be 2-0, but I don't care what anyone else thinks our defence has been absolutely rank for nearly an hour.
We have let a team of 6' 6" hammer throwers cause chaos in our penalty area with simple up and unders.
Boruc has had to pull off at least three top drawer saves (apart from flapping at every cross) and owe can't even erect a proper defensive wall at free kicks.
I am delighted with the win but this defence... oh dear!
-
Der Hun do what we can't - score a peno (Boyd).
Mind you they get more practice!!
-
Sean...babe....
Join the Club!

Calm down, it's a cup tie. What did you expect - Dundee to lie down and let us run over them. We're 2 up and mission almost accomplished.
If this was MON team we would be congratulating them on their ability to dig in get a result against a team playing their Cup Final.
Find my Baby - Moby
-
Please Mr.Strachan can you remove your head from the sand and see that we need 2-3 decent defenders come January when it will probably be too late for CL.
I don't want to hear any team 4 or 5 rubbish.

2-1 MacDonald.
Poor punch by Boruc
-
71 mins. Goal for Dundee, 1-2.
Artur flapped at the ball into the box and it fell to Kevin McDonald 7 yards out.

So our poor defensive record continues, no need 4 BBC commentators 2 b so happy about it.

that referee is beyond belief

Celtic defense???....
DEPLORABLY DEPLORABLE!
Now it's nail biting time!
So what is noo?
Kojo.
-
Artur flaps again. Great shot stopping tonight but a mare at high balls.
-
MacDonald checked by defender on edge of box - clear foul not given
Ref been poor tonight.
-
Palenik obstructed Artur who then got nothing on the punch
Kevin McDonald's first touch second half.
We have coughed up 10 corners tonight - every one a problem given their physical presence
-
Sno must be subbed.
That is a no Brainer!
Kojo
-
a touch of the draculas tonight for artur neither like crosses

Have I spoke prematurely about a win?

In what way can you demonstrate your support of Glasow Celtic FC?

MacDonald flagged for offside - never off.
Would have been an interesting decision for the ref as last defender fouled him on the edge of the box

WHEN THE BALL IS IN THE DANGER AREA WE CAN`T WIN HEADER
BOBO ANYONE ?????????

Our midfield has been poor tonight - high profile high earners have failed to impose themselves.
Love all these comments about 'Sunday League striker' & 'Hammer thrower' - with the right supply Zemlik is a handful

Celtic have all hands to the Pump!
Which is in dire need of PRIMING!
Celtic are just hangin' in there!
Woo EE!
Nails?
Who needs them, anyway!!
Kojo.
-
Dundee camped in our half. 87 minutes and no subs for Celtic?
-
Sean South,
I've been as big a critic of our defence on this blog as anyone since Gordon's tenure started. But tell me, when playing against 6' 6" hammer throwers as you call them, how do you expect smaller players to out jump them? Of course the Dundee players will win more than their fair share of headers.
The onus is on the central defenders to make sure every high ball is at least challenged and make sure other defenders defend the second ball. With the exception of one free header in the first half, they have done that. For our defence that is an improvement.
-
Cubist
Zemlik is a handful because he is being allowed to be .....we are not imposing ourselves as a defence ....far too soft
-
Evander Sno - great effort to get up & support the attack twice in last couple of minutes
-
whooooosh Yo! peeps what gives???
bedlam given a 24 hour pass....
Yo! paul67> regards to you and yours ...
saw a wee bit of 1st half... game almost over here now..
typical cup tie game.....
3 changes to the team and....its a bit disjointed as expected...
red card for dundee thug...

I think this performance reflects the formation and the players picked for it. Should not be surprised.

It really could be worse for us really...

Job done.
ZonalMarking, Mike, Freudian slip. You can imagine where my mind was. Deleted.

full time .... now get back to the training ground ..... :-)

That was tough to watch but I suppose it's one of those games you just want to get out the road, nto the next round and no injuries so it can be seen as a successful evening.
You forget how poor the standard of commentary is on the BBC? Are they telling me that's the best they could find? And a nice balance to the commentary with an ex-Dundee and Huns guy providing us with his 'neutral' comments. Shocking.
I thought the big guy McDonald we have been scouting looked quite good. Big Jan still looks like he needs a shake, even against a team like Dundee. He should be running riot against defences like that.
Bring on the Rangers!
-
That ref was a shocker and the assistants gave wrong offside decisions on a consistent basis. A very difficult game!
-
-
Big Artur definitely obstructed for their goal. I've seen fouls given for lesser offences.
That being said, there was still work to be done and the second ball should have been defended better.
Never mind, we played within ourselves and the win was a lot more comfortable than some people are making out.
-
Decent result tonight against a team of Basketball players. If we'd taken a few more of our chances it's been quite comfortable come the final whistle. Dundee looked decent. I would have preferred East Fife.
Kevin McDonald getting interviewed. Celic trying to sign him got a mention. Was he the No 4? Played very well for a big lad.
-
Sean Smith
I was under the impression we were playing Dundee not Falkirk
We need a confident defence not a new one
VertWolf
-
didn`t see the first 20 mins
what i saw was poor
the defending was shoddy , uncommanding and powderpuff
imo we got run ragged by a six and a half foot player who whilst tall had little or no football skill
Boruc was poor at crosses into the box but it was little wonder with that defence
Wee Scott worked very hard and was easily our best player
the midfield was once again below par and as a unit have no defensive quality
i am beginning to become seriously concerned at our general play
we seem particularly adept at running rings around against ordinary SPL teams at CP but leak like a seive away from home
the squad is imbalanced with no cover in some areas and a number of ordinary players in other
ps what is WGS on about ...........how about a defence that can defend and a clean sheet
-
Aweinspiring stuff !! I have been a huge critic, of the school of "whaur's the entertainment?". Well, we've cured that problem. Every game at the moment is highly charged. Its just that I was looking for the entertainment to focus on the opposition box !
Caldwell - an apology ? No chance. Nice pass for McDonald for the goal. However, a more ineffective right back in a defensive sense would be hard to find.
Now Boruc is tainted with the fear of the ball that the defence possesses. Each time a bal is floted into our box, you'd think it was a grenade, the amount of faffing around that there is. That was the strongest team available to us tonight. We weren't very good. Some flashes of good play, some flashes of weakness. I hope and pray that we are simply going through a wee bad patch and that the real Celtic will re-appear soon. I'm not so sure tho.
-
Dundee hit the wood work twice and Artur pulled of a string of vital stops. How in hell was this comfortable????
I think some happy clappers are now just on the wind up.
Sean South is right. We have no defence and it will cost us this season.
-

can't disagree with a word you write. "Short changed" sums it up neatly.

We are in the Quarter finals. Never an easy cup-tie.
Disappointed with some of the performances though.
Of the CQN bloggers, that is!!
Hail Hail
C'mon the Hoops.

BTW
Mothers just done Hibs 4-2 at fortress Easter Road
-
definately something amiss...
if artur had a game like he did on sunday against hibs we would be battening the hatches for a mineshafters revolution.....
i dont like naming players but only one half of the strikers actually looked interested.......
time for a rest or time for a run out for someone interested?
defensively it was the usual shambles... not as bad as recently but still moderately shambolic...
gave away a lot of corners and silly free kicks around our box..
play as a team , lose as a team... at the moment i dont think that celtic play as a team....
however.. next round and the trebles on :-)
-
Richie
can I borrow your rose tinted specs and enjoy a glass of the vintage optimism that you are quaffing, please. Motherwell are in the quarter finals too. Doesn't mean they are any good. I demand more from a team with players banking 20k per week. I am disappointed with the bloggers that don't.
-
Sean South
I'm glad you have dropped some of the personal asides and focussed on constructive criticism of our short comings.
There is a lot of truth in what you say.
Last time we went to Ibrox we surrendered meekly and were pumped.
Based on what we have seen so far this season a similar outcome is a distinct possibility.
Tonight was an ideal opportunity to reintroduce Bobo. Another opportunity lost.
No doubt I will be showered with invective by the hard core happy clappers.
I sincerely hope I'm wrong but I have a distinct feeling that by the end of October this forum will have gone into meltdown if results pan out the way I fear they will.

Ach, gi' up moaning... ye moaners. What entertainment. I'd forgotten about Gavin Rae. Wasn't he the one who was banned for jumping up and down on someone's heid in that classic Rangers CL campaign a few years back? Looks the part - as if he's just come out of his coffin for the evening. What a team of giants Dundee are - all the more satisfying that Celtic's pet dwarf should score with his heid. Number 27, the shirt worn by Mark Burchill - obviously it's saved for the shorties. Oh no we lost a goal. We'll probably be relegated. Up the shorties! We need to stick together.
-
Evenin all.
Home from a funeral in time to see the last seventy minutes.
We won. We were poor. Dundee chased and harried at every opportunity.
The idiot referee that is Ian Brines was absolutely shocking. The penalty was a stonewaller so he had to give it. Beyond that, Celtic got nothing from him and his assistants. Dundee were getting fouls for running into players. Brines is incompetent.
As for our team selection, why? What did we gain from putting out the normal team bar injuries? When will there be a better time to give the fringe players some game time? Personally, at 2-0, I would have freshened it up.
Of the fringe men who started, I thought Kennedy did ok, Riordan fine barring his penalty miss, Sno was poor.

Sean South
There you go again. Just because some of us don't agree with you, we get insulted by being described as 'burying our heads in the sand'. The other night we were 'board apologists'.
What WILL you come up with next?
You certainly have an unfortunate way of trying to garner support for your particular negative outlook.
You see a bad defence... I see a win without the need to go into 2nd gear!
Here, take heart from the bestest song ever written...
Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better...

Just appeared from behind the couch after a more than unconvincing diplay by our bhoys.
No excuses about weakened team as that was about the best that we could have fielded which is a bit scary.
Deeks once again has failed to make the most most of an opportunity to show us all what he is capable of and frankly all i have seen of him since day one at CP has been average at very best.
An all round grogy performance where we were out muscled in all areas - i really like Donati but he needs to put a wee bit more bite into his tackles and generally work harder on the defensive duties that all midfielders have.
Poor performance all round and early confidence among both supporters and the team seems to be fading fast.
-
It's no real surprise I know, but after Hibs fans complained about Artur giving them the middle finger and other hand gestures; the police and football authorities decide he has no case to answer in terms of possible crowd incitement.
Making the sign of the cross must be deemed more offensive in this country of ours given the establishment's frenzied attack on Artur after he blessed himself at death star.

pfayr - Zemlik is 6'7" & weighs 15st 10 lbs. Palenik is 6'4" and weighs 13st 11lbs (slightly lighter than RFC's tallest player -Kirk Broadfoot).
If we dominate midfield & don't give up dead ball opportunities in the last third we deny supply to Zemlik and he is reduced to chasing the odd hopeful ball.
Gavin Swankie put in dangerous crosses from 7 free kicks & 7 corners tonight. We gave them too many dead ball opportunities. They were always going to trouble us from corners & free kicks.
We did not play well as a team. Midfield was the biggest disappointment for me tonight.
-
Fair play to Dundee, they refused to lie down and ave us a good game. However, Celtic looked suspect defensively, but they were not helped by the midfield who offered litle protection.
Was JJPD injured tonight? I can't understand why Gary Caldwell was played at right back. Maybe he pays us to play there;->
I don't think Boruc has much confidence in the central defenders winning headers. Why else would he come for every ball in the area?
In my view, Brown is wasted on the right, much like Petrov was when pushed out there. He should be in the middle with Donati.
Riordan dissapeared after his very poor penalty. Sno tried his best but it was not good enough. These guys have missed a chance to claim a place in the 1st team.
On a positive note, I wish all of our players had the same workrate and committment of Scott McDonald. What a wee player he has turned out to be.
Lubo.
-
The Hat:Even at the level I played at when you took on inferior 6' 6" hammer throwers you made sure that there was no aeriel supply route to them.
That means cutting out crossing opportunities further upfield and not giving away too many set-pieces near the box.
Our midfield simply didn't do that tonight and the way Sno and co were conceding needless free kicks all around the 18-yard box put a nervy defence under pressure.
But I can't agree that this represented a defensive improvement.
There was a lot of desperation in our play in the penalty box and Boruc's inabilty to deal with crosses and his poor punching were big worries.
This defence is a serious matter yet we had Gordon Strachan treating our performance- which I thought was satisfactory- defence apart- but far from enthralling- as a big joke.
His statement that we are not very defence-minded but great to watch made me wince.
He thought it was funny to suggest that we might become more defensive and look to win matches 1-0.
I for one would settle for that right now....
Then we might have a chance of going to Ibrox without having to score two or three goals to win.
I thought his wise-cracking persona tonight was further proof that he simply doesn't understand how bad his defence is.

Johnny Mac, I see it now.

I actually thought that his penalty miss apart, Deeks did ok tonight. Exactly what are some people expecting of him when he finally gets a start? Like every other player, Deeks would need time to settle into a position, in a run of games, before any reasoned judgement could be made. I say give the boy a chance.

..have not yet clicked - why should they on a mid-week excursion to Dundee ? We are still in 4 competitions - I believe we will win two of them - lets hope there are still some fellow supporters left to witness this!

I'm glad of the win.
The whole team have forgotten how to tackle - GS should be reading the riot act - but it appears not.
Sean South - shortchanged is about right - also hoodwinked, shafted, conned, let down etc etc etc.
Are the board watching...?
-
Some smart-alec comments from WGS after the game re the defence. I don't think he knows just how poor they are and that in itself is a great concern. Regrettably I have to join the bandwagon re Naylor ... tonight he was dreadful particularly in the first half where his opposite number gave him a torrid time. I can't help thinking also that JVOH is not the answer tho' to be fair to him he got no protection from the ref.
Did anyone else notice that the normally wide playing surface at Dens had been reduced in width by approx 8 yards....suiting a high ball game through the middle.
-
Sean South
with you brother
WGS is not as funny as he perceives himself to be
i find him a patronising, insincere bampot at times
his defence is cr7p and instead of addressing questions about it makes jokes
NOT FUNNY IMO
-
I will say this again...I do not care who slaps me down. Stephen McManus is not good enough to be in that side, let alone captain it.
Caldwell is not a RB...never has been and never will be. Not to have JPD in there is shocking..there are RBs in the reserves and U19s we could and should be using if he is injured.
Naylor needs a kick up the pants....dropping him is the only way to do that.
To play Brown out wide on the right when O'Brien is sitting on the bench is also a crazy decision. He should have rested Donati or Brown and let O'Brien play.
Same goes for Killen instead of JVOH.
Some of we Gords decisions as far as personnel go were a bit off tonight..shame really he had the chance to try some of the others.
-
I can't understand why our Champions League strike force played the full game tonight.
This was a night for players like Zurawski,Killen and O'Dea because we will need them soon enough, preferably match fit.
Anyone know if Doumbe is out for long?
-
Quick mention for BRINES tonight - that was the worst ref display i've seen in quite sometime (and theres been a few bad ones)
I think if he could have got away with scoring for Dundee tonight he would have.
-
MOISEY17
BRILLIANT :¬))))
-
Paul67.
It was hard to watch at times, and I've come to one conclusion,Gary caldwell will never make a right back,if Gordon can't see that then he'll go down in my estimation as a manager.
Gavin Rae got his tactics right tonight,he knew that his team would get away with murder against Celtic, and they did.
How many times was Artur fouled, at corners and free kicks, his jersey was tugged a couple of times, and nothing was given, any other keeper, and a foul would be given.
Brines must be the worst referee in Scotland, and I do'nt understand how he gets away with the way he referees Celtic games, his decisions at times beggers belief, the sending off was a joke but in my eyes it was intended to deflect attention away from his poor handling of the game, people will no doubt say he could'nt be anti- Celtic as he sent off a Dundee player.(paranoid)you bet.
Another disappointing game for Celtic,Against Hibs they were the better team, but to-night they were hassled out of the game by a team of giants, led by a hard centre forward who gave no respite to our beleaguered defence.
You would struggle to nominate a Celtic MOTM as there were few shining lights out there to-night,I'll go for Scott McDonald as he took his goal well and done some running about, but as I said earlier, disappointing match to watch,I hope theres more football played on Saturday.
-
Johnny Mac @ 22.17.
Totally agree.

Strachan said before game that JJPD injured his back in training

Oops.... my post at 9.45 contained my very own howler.
It must have been a case of deja vu worrying about last year's exit to Falkirk.
But I stick by my much-criticised analysis that the defence must be sorted, the midfield was moderate and thank God for little Scott, who turned the game with his goal and assist.
This is my corrected original post:
EDB:My support for this club stretches back 50 years and I have enough experience to know when Celtic fans are being short-changed.
Even a welcome victory against a workmanlike First Division side can not disguise our many shortcomings.
This season I am afraid we have shot ourselves in the foot with a transparent lack of investment in the back four.
Bringing the obvious failings of this side, particularly the defence to the attention of the powers-that-be ( did Paul67 not suggest something very similar?) is one way of showing my concern for the club.
Others may prefer to bury their heads in the sand and say nothing, but I think Gordon Strachan and co should be left in no doubt that they must improve this embarrassing defence.
EDB: Can you really see this side winning the league or making the last 16 of the CL again?
I would loved to be proved wrong but there is no sign of this back four- no matter whom we seem to play there- getting any better.
If Dundee can make that many chances against Celtic we are trouble when we meets side like AC, Benfica and Shakthar.
I don'think we can improve this defence long-term without bringing in new players.
Short-term I would try Balde and hope that Strachan can improve the organisation- which at times is so non-existent we can't even erect a proper wall.
The abuse that some fellow Celtic supporters have directed at this post leaves me feeling that we have the defence we deserve.
Sorry but if people are defending our indefensible defence then they DO have their heads stuck in the sand.

I'm with Sean South and his "bury your head in the sand" comment. There are some on here that treat criticism of the team as something just short of a cardinal sin. Let's get it straight. Apart from Edward, we are all Celtic supporters. Some clearly are content with a win by whatever means - I think the categorisation of burying your head in the sand is a mild one. You pay your money for your season ticket, for your replica kits etc etc. We have players pocketing large amounts of cash each week. Yet some, and in particular the defence, fail to shine against weaker opposition. For all their weekly training and healthy salary, they, the defence, are failing to present themselves as a strong defensive unit. Now, should we (a) say "who cares? We won" or (b) query what on earth is going on ?! If you have any ambition for this club, you must fall into the latter category.
-
When's the draw for the next round, and if it's a home tie, are we still due a 'free' game on the season ticket?
-
Paul do you know if there is a doctor who contributes to this site who could prescribe Prozac.
Not for me mind you.
But there are a few who could do with it.
Oh and if he fancies doling out some reality pills that would be good as well.
We will not qualify for the last 16 of the champions league, we have only done it once and suddenly it has become a target against which the team is now measured.
Why should this suddenly be Saint Martin couldn't get us there yet Gordon Strachans team if they don't get there will be viewed as a failure.
On the league front, this year will be harder but there is a long way to go and both ourselves and Rangers will drop points (yes boys there will be more points dropped, it happens).
If it is closer in the league and we do win it maybe the team will get some recognition for a league win and it will not only be because Rangers have gone into meltdown.

Yes, I noticed it too. I don't know why other people can't see that? Even Rangers have been known to narrow their pitch when it suits them.
Every single away pitch in Scotland seems to be tiny. I noticed that a couple of weeks ago after a Celtic game, when I switched it over to an EPL game. The difference is amazing. Makes it easier to close down and harry the Celtic players who like to play the game the way it's supposed to be played.
X - I haven't had a fag since May 6 2006, I'm happy to report. Funnily enough, that was in the car park of the Normandy Hotel in Renfrew.
The 'funny' brand never, ever did anything for me. Or any other chemical substance for that matter. Now alcohol, that's a different matter entirely!
-
Strachan has always fancied himself as a comedian- I first encountered his brand of humour 23 years ago and it wasn't amusing then and is less funny now that he is manager of my club.
His smart-Alec comments are often embarrassing and sit uneasily with the public face of a great football institution.
I will give him full credit for the two SPL title win and last year's last 16 CL achievement.
But his failure to fix this defence is about to cost us dearly.
I wish he would cut out the laboured gags and quips and concentrate on shoring up a defence that only he and a few happy-clappers think is up to scratch.
Come on, Gordon, sort it out.
-
Anyone else notice a little spark of "first half of last year's" Naylor?
Rampaging run down the left leaving players in his wake ... and then there was the very inviting far post cross that fell to Evander Sno (half chance of a goal) ... what do you think, on his way back?
-
Hard core happy clapper reporting for duty, sir!
The first thing to say to all you doom mongers is...
You have a point.
We were not secure in our work tonight. There you go.
But to take any insight from WGS's post march comments, far less to feel secure that he is deluded about our defensive weaknesses, well all I can say is that you must have developed the same secret powers that the cop from Heroes (Matt Parkman) has.
The post match comments to the press are not the place to slaughter anybody. It takes no pressure off you as manager to do so. The mineshafters who want you sacked are not going to be appeased and the journos are going to reach for the cracked crest with the excuse that the manager agrees with them and he's panicking too.
It was a bad night; WGS made a few funny comments (well I laughed even if some of you did not). We've got plenty of work to do to improve our arial defense. What Higdon did for Falkirk, Zemlik did for Dundee tonight. Lee McCullough (and Cousin and Cuellar) lie in waiting to do so on 20th October.
I was glad to see Artur helping out tonight even if his punching was not yet good enough. I certainly would not have awarded a foul against Dundee when they scored. We got a good rough workout tonight of the kind of rough house arial attacking we are going to be subjected to in the SPL. Unfortunately, our next 2 SPL games against Dundee Utd; and Gretna will not provide the same kind of forward line challenge. This work will have to continue on the training ground.
WGS was right to play a near full strength team. If he had followed my suggestion and rested everybody we would have got beat. The clamour for his head would have been even louder. We're a very scared support just now. Sean South and WGS might well be happy to go back to boring 2:1 and 1:0 victories after this.
My prediction for Saturday is 1:0 against a Levein team who'll play 10 men behind the ball.
Only 2 good things from tonight. First, we won, and I'd never want to diminish the importance of that outcome. Second, Motherwell are proving to be no flash in the pan and we could well be back on top on Saturday.
-
lostrambling
An under strength team could easily have lost that one tonight with the way Dundee played aided and abetted by ref Brines.
The manager knew what was required and his team got the job done.
I thought Naylor was better tonight although his crossing is still not up to standard.
-
-
Having read some of the comments, here's my tuppence worth:
Caldwell - he's not a natural RB, I totally agree. And to be honest I'm not overly convinced he's the answer at Centre Half. HOWEVER - I actually didn't think he did a great deal wrong tonight. HIs pass to Scott McD for the second was top drawer - if Brown or Donati had played that ball we'd have ben drooling.
DEFENCE - Still unconvincing, although am a huge McManus fan. Can't be easy swapping centre half partnerships all the time. We need a top drawer centre half to play with Mick as a priority in January. Actually thought Naylor had one of his better recent games, although still down on last year's level.
MIDFIELD - a lot of talk about the defence. For me, this was the least functioning part of the team tonight. Defence is put under constant pressure becaise of inability of midfield to get a grip of the game. Sno did his first team claims no good at all, Donati was little influence and Brown worked hard to no real effect.
Special word for Deek - this is why you are not in the team. Offered no justification for him to be anywhere near first 11.
ATTACK - Still massive room for improvement, but I thought I saw signs JvoH and Skippy working better together. I am still to be fully persuaded by either of them, but I thought individually and collectively it was better tonight from them.
OVERALL - We've seen so many times over so many years that tonight's was the type of game that just has banana skin written all over it. Who could forget the 9-8 penalty shoot out against Partick Thistle? The 1-0 v Stranraer when they missed a penalty and open goal? And the Celtic sides that played those games all went on to win the league. I'm just saying these are often difficult ties, and sometimes you're just glad to win them and move on.
-
Most important thing tonight was to win, and that we did.
But that was a worrying display, especially in central defence.
Balde: I am a fan (warts and all) and would never have dropped him from the team in the first place. I was horrified that Caldwell took his place when he did. But Caldwell proved me wrong initially and I thought he did very well in the early part of last season. As the season progressed - maybe Benfica away onwards - his form slipped.
I have seen nothing this season that makes me think Caldwell or Kennedy are better right sided centre backs than Balde. I don't think anybody here would even put up a case for Pressley versus any of our choices, and O'Dea plays on the left.
When will Balde get a chance to get back in the team? How many balls in the air do we miss without that type of presence. Would we have lost the 2nd goal v Hibs if Balde had been attacking that ball in the air rather than Caldwell?
For the many anti-Balde posters out there (in the CQN majority I would say) who cite the African Cup and his subsequent lack of form. Yep his form did dip around that time and I don't think he was as good laterally as he was in his first couple of seasons.
But the main issue is - Would we lose less goals with him partnering McManus in right central defence as opposed to any other choice? Or more pertinently - does he at least deserve a chance?
Does his weakest point (lack of passing ability) compared with the other guys really count more than his arial ability and pace which is clearly better than anything else we've got?
In an ideal world,I want a right central defender better than Balde. When I debated this pre-Window on CQN I had no problems with him going in the window IF we bought a better player. We didn't do that, we've got big problems in central defence, ergo - he deserves a chance.
-
pfayr
The point I was making is that we've been here before in cup ties against lower league teams. The only objective is to get through to the next round. Dundee played well enough in their own way but didn't really threaten other than via the high ball. The biggest criticism of the team should'nt be how we defended the high balls but instead the amount of dead ball opportunities we (Celtic and Brines) gave them.
If/when we win this cup no-one will remember or care about our performance tonight

Brines is a poor ref more than he is biased but the assistant refs tonight officiated like they'd been promised a lodge promotion.
Would we want Balde back against teams like Dundee Utd; and Gretna who do not seem to pose the same challenges that Dundee, Falkirk and Rangers will?
-
Anyone else think the parochial BBC Scotland team excelled themselves tonight? (With the exception of Pat Nevin who dared to suggest that Boruc may have been fouled.) :-)

I actualy taught our defence was the best part of the team tonight.
The main problem was the midfield players giving away stupid freekicks in dangerous areas against probably the biggest team we will face all season.
Some people on the site have such vendettas against certain players, namely naylor and caldwell tonight, that no matter how well they play will always find some fault in their game.
Caldwell was often left exposed tonight by scott brown who kept on coming inside and taking up his more natural central position.
Naylor actualy defended quite well. We had the beating of Dundee down our left side and i felt Naylor got up and down like he was doing last season. Fair enough his distribution at times was poor but it was an improvement from him none the less.
McManus and Kennedy dealt well with the majority of the high balls. The high balls that troubled us were down to Boruc who failed to get any distance on his many attempted punches. In saying that he made some brilliant saves.
I think the one thing we can definitely take from tonight is that Sno will never be good enough for the club. He is so slow that he gives away stupid frees and always gives time for the other team to get men behind the ball when we attack. Also his shooting is shocking. The only thing he is good at is shielding at ball.
All in all Dundee outplayed us except from the start of the 2nd half until they got their goal. Their goalscorer McDonald looks a fine player, much better then Sno and he's also a few years younger.
The referee was a disgrace tonight, the amount of decisions he gave against us was unbelieveable. The only decision he gave in our favour was the sending off of their player which i felt was harsh.
It was too tight a game to bring on substitutes after their goal.
-
I think Alex Rae is the manager. Gavin Rae is the slightly less thuggish ex-RFC player.
-
long time lurker - used to post but work took over - Paul what the hell happened in here?? It's like we're being wound up by journos or imposters - or even "the old guy in the pub who last went to a game in 1974 but thinks he's a fan"!! You know the type - thought that the season ticket was too dear but pays his golf every year and still calls himself a supporter! Some of the posters ought to take a trip back to 1995 or even 1965 - when we needed supporters. Tonight - Mick, JFK, HG and Kanga get pass marks - Riordan proved that Wee GS is right. Forget critisising the defence - we know it WGS knows it but FFS get off their backs and be a SUPPORTER!!!

yeah, you're right - I criticise the defence, how on earth can I call myself a supporter ?! Also, yeah, we're better now than we were in 1995. What was I thinking, I should shush and blindly follow the team - Davie, show me the logic please.

I'll be in Glasgow tomorrow, and Friday if you fancy a wee snifter,if not I'll certainly come for a drink on Saturday,I see some others are meeting you, so it would be nice to put faces to names.
I'm not a big drinker before games as I like to go to the games sober, but I quite like AWNAWS idea of meeting after the game.

Tell someone how crap they are and repeat it often enough, they will start to believe you.

-
Billy Dodds actually sounded reasonable compared to the muppet main commentator a couple of times in the 2nd half tonight.
Sean South, you've been watching Celtic for 50 years? So you saw us win a cup in 1957 then nothing until Jock Stein came back. How miserable you must have been to know then. Der hun won nine-in-a-row. how did you manage to get through that?
These are the good times. Even in my modest 25 years as a regular there has been nothing like this. Stop bleedin' whinging. We don't have a divine right to beat everything in sight (without conceding a goal)
All you people are really doing my head in. Even Malceye, who was fairly positive when he first posted is becoming a doom monger.
SHUT UP the lot of ye.

The Hat @ 21:34
Intelligent analysis of our CBs tonight, I agree that JK alongside SMcM did their job against tall bustling aggressive opposition. JK's introduction was a positive outcome in my view. Agreed that this aspect of our defence was an improvement. Perhaps now we might try JK and BB for further improvement in our CB performance.
Sean South @22:08
You completely miss the point made by The Hat and proceed to find fault with our midfield as justification!!!
Agreed that too many quality balls were delivered from wide but not the fault of the CBs. It demonstrated that GC is never a RB, and that our midfield didn't contribute the defensive support that they should. However I'm not prepared to slaughter Sno in the way others have - I thought he showed more awareness and match fitness than his last first team appearance. Sno needs a few more games under his belt before we will get the best out of him.
I do agree that our organisation as a defensive unit is in need of much improvement, not to mention an injection of quality.
Boruc proved his worth as a shot stopper again. However he seems relatively poor at rising high to claim high cross balls, flapping on more than a few occasions when he was out-jumped. Mind you the MIB gave him little protection against opposition who constantly impeded him.
One of the most striking features of tonight's game was the difficulty which the MIB had awarding fouls in favour of Celtic, coupled with the ease with which he blew in favour of Dundee. He seemed determined to better the AMIB who repeatedly (at least 3 times) flagged SMcD as offside when clearly onside.
TV viewing makes it difficult to read the individual contribution of each player - I'm satisfied that we got the victory against a good side that was up for the game with little to lose.
C'mon the Hoops
-
The defence is grim, so we need a killer in midfield, someone who can tackle and leave the foot in without fouling, Davy Hay, where is he? Send for Davy. Nothing I seen convinces me this lot are better than Bobo (who is not that great) so I would bring him back to play 3-5-2 until we can buy a centre half and two fullbacks, we must get to new-year no more than 6 points behind the Gers. I would go

Lisbon Lions Upper @22.47 had it right.
Cup football away against wee teams has often seen us struggle. Our fan base are in danger of developing a mentality associated with the England fan of the 80's and 90's. You know the kind- a win was never enough - "We should be taking 10 off the likes of Cyprus/Slovenia/Norway/insert perceived diddy nation of choice.
It's been a night of cup and league upsets all across Europe. We got away with it tonight.
Man U lost at home to Coventry. Most Man U fans with a sense of perspective will be saying "So what?"
AC lost to Palermo
Ajax were taken to extra time against Kozakken Boys (who????)
Porto lost on pens to another miracle at Fatima. Benfica and Sporting Lisbon were taken to pens also.
But the biggest shock of the night was the scorer of a last minute winning goal for Valencienne against Sochaux (our £5m rated transfer target plays for them).
Step forward

everyone - we all have different views, expectations and opinions about how we want Celtic to play.
For me - considering myself pretty knowledgable about the game and having watched Celtic for donkeys i will maintain my position since the start of the season - the system we play is weak;-
Defensively - whether in the air or on the deck we have been cut open too easily. This area is in decline since MoN when teams would struggle to get a shot on target. BTW i'm not talkiing about Milan, Benfica etc... but Dundee, Falkirk... no disrespect but give me a break.
Midfield - I like - but without Naka its never cohesive and with Naka its too light weight. Would like another in there with some power and drive.
Forwards - Mcdonald gets pass marks, JVOH is being under utilized.........because we cannot hit the by line and stick a cross onto his head.
WHERE IS OUR LEADER ON THE PARK?
The results were there from the beginning of the season but the stats/indicators told us what needed to be fixed . Gordon Srachan knew it and described it ........for some unknown reason he was not backed to strenghthen it.
I am frustrated at this once again - it happened pre and post Seville and its happening now - we have the makings of a great team but our board never pushes the boat out EVEN to take a gamble.
As it stands - I will cheer the bhoys on without critisism and hope the spirit of the club carries us on - but for once I would like to see the money men REALLY challenge themselves to build a GREAT Celtic team in their/our lifetime....instead i fear we will be wondering what if ......
lets hang in there until January and hope for some fresh faces and others to move on

Sean South ,
You still moping around? I see your disappointed because we won again.
Please do me a favour , stop whining. You pine for defeat. Someone asked you earlier what does it take for you to support our team?
We won a cup tie. Unconvincing but job done. We're in the next round. Around Europe was more or less the same , dodgy results all round.
Coventry City beat a 40 million pound Man.U team at OT , this shows what can happen in cup football.
On the game , I felt we struggled against their height , I haven't seen as many 6" plus players in Scotland for years!
That 6'6 player McDonald looks as if he could easily play at a higher level already even though he's a young one. The boy who hit the freekicks for them (Brines was terrible for both sides BTY) will never hit 3 sweeter strikes in his career in a row as he did tonite. It was good to see artur make the saves however , I was hoping for him to make a few saves for his confidence.
Brown was anonymous again , thought Evander Sno did well considering he's had little football this season but should have scored at the end. Then there's Riordan , the guy they beat the manger with.In my opinion Riordan was Ok considering match time this season but If Aiden had the game he (Riordan) did tonight he be the victim of a public flogging on here tonight. Left Naylor exposed all night and defensively useless.
Job done however , slightly uncomfortable but in the Q/F draw nevertheless.

I forgot to add , I see the usual suspects are griping over post match interviews.
The crime?
Smiling after an away win at a reporter who's disappointed that we won.
Seriously , who gives a toss at a managers after match interview!

Celtic Quick News proclaims itself as 'Celtic News Not Lazy Journalism'.
Last week Paul 67 noted that we were on the verge of a year without a clean sheet away from home.
Everyone was surprised, many of us didn't believe, it until we checked it ourselves.
It became a discussion point amongst Celtic supporters because nobody had given it a thought.
It has now been picked up by the mainstream media Lazy Jouno's who read it here and is the subject of comment and discussion.
Paul 67 mentioned it as an interesting fact , it is now being used by the press and phone in hosts as another stick to beat us and is encouragement to every team that hosts us.
Many contributors to CQN and phone-ins have stated that they don't worry about it so long as we win.
Well "It doesn't work like that".
I am a firm believer in psychological advantages playing a huge part in success in sport.
The team that 'know' they will win may not always succeed but the team that thinks they will lose , usually lose.
I would imagine that every opposition manager will now use our away vulnerability as a positive reinforcer in his team talk to remind his players that they WILL score against Celtic it's just a matter of how many.
We need to fix this anomaly as a matter of urgency or we will continue to struggle to the last minute in away games.

I personally think the defense just needs to have a clean sheet to regain their confidence. More support from the midfield is needed and this is the reason why Hartley has been featuring more often, he was probably the player we missed the most today. I hope we can have a good performance at the weekend as we need it just to get the self belief back before Milan. The season was going swimmingly up until the Shaktar match. Here's hoping for normal service to be resumed at the weekend.

It's hard to fight an enemy who has outposts in your head. ~ Sally Kempton
A couple of posters have wisely alluded to that magical two sided coin that operates us..The Big C. Confidence.
I berated Artur the other day....I was raging....And later felt annoyed with myself for doing so publicly... I could have easily let of steam privately..... I did not follow the advice of my wise elders...
'If you have no good to say then say nothing at all'
Paul67 pointed out a statistic that resonated with us and vibrated across the shallow pond of Scottish fitba journalism.... And is still making waves...
Interesting development.
Paul67. Thanks for your reply. I understood you saying you sat on stories when the Bhoys were playing Rangers or in Europe.....
But not Hibs away? That of course is your perogative.
I cannot help feel that the Hacks have jumped on your research and are toasting what they perceive to be Schadenfreude ..
...As I said interesting developments.
Many CQN posters provide constructive criticism. Unfortunately, there is also some 'destructive' criticism. It is destructive in judging young pros's to be permanent failures with no Hope of growth & development whatsoever....
Shame..that.... Its very easy to think of CQN as a collection of like minded souls chatting over a beer....But its not. Its Very Public.
I agree with The Onlooker.....Psychology of a team is Huge Factor.

Paul 67 did not get the credit for the journos picking up on this stat. I heard Peter Martin on Clyde ( I listen while driving home from work) attribute his knowledge of this fact to overhearing it being said by a "sponsor" of Celtic whilst he was on the flight to Donetsk.
The studio guests then said that people who know such things are anoraks and should get a life, so he may not wish to claim credit for the research.
Aye, you're damned either way, right enough.
Anyone expecting a high scoring game this weekend. I think our job will be to break down a tight defence without the benefit of Naka. I believe we have the players to do so.

Morning campers,
Didn't see the game last night but scanned the mails this morning, the usual suspects appearing in full technicolour professing to us all that their angst and utter disdain is only driven by love of the tic. Give me strength. The Victor Meldrew csc giving it the old "in 50 years I have never seen it so bad" in full Rev Ian Paisley defiance. "I told ye so, I told ye so" with smug satisfaction and the description of our players on a public forum as "disgraceful" !!!!!
I can tell you that whilst I recognise the failings in the team currently (especially in defensive terms), the sight of Willie Falconer and Allen McKnight in the starting eleven and another regular home defeat against mid-table mediocrity back in the 90s is a far distant cry to the good times we have at the moment. In the name of Zeus's beard, can we not enjoy it ? What drives you fellas ? We have no right to win every game, hump every team in the cup and the last I checked we won last night, mission accomplished, against the land of the giants who probably played their season's cup final.
Neither a full blown happy clapper but most definitely NEVER a dyed-in-the-wool "I love a good whinge for the sake of negativity" mine shafter….

IT was a case of putting' aside their differences in an anti-bigotry drive as Father Stephen Dunn and Reverend David Clark enjoyed a special day of golf.
Father Dunn, whose parish is in Bridgeton, Glasgow and Reverend Clark, of Helenburgh, joined forces to take a swing at sectarianism as the Scottish Catholic Church golf championship took place at Renfrew Golf Club.
Ministers from the Church of Scotland played at the event, which aims to raise awareness of the country's on-going campaign against bigotry.
Later in the day, priests from all over Scotland competed for the Co-op Funeral Services trophy.

The Scottish Catholic Church team recently returned from Leeds where they successfully defended their UK Catholic Church golf title against 14 different diocese from all over England.
The presentation of prizes was attended by Bishop Philip Tartaglia, the Bishop of Paisley.
It was followed by a discussion between Church of Scotland Ministers and Catholic priests about their next annual golf match for the Newgate trophy later this year.

As a supporter of some 50 years, I think Big Wavy has hit the nail on the head this morning. If you think we are poor at the moment, then I can assure you things were a lot worse a lot of the last 50 years. I have watched teams with even the likes of Big Billy, Bobby Murdoch and wee Jinky get regularly gubbed (until the return of Mr Stein granted). And we know how good they were. If you haven't watched other sides we have had out on the park, then I can assure you, you would shudder to think some of them were deemed fit to wear the jerseys (and that included some signings Mr Stein made).
WE ARE A GOOD TEAM. Let's get behind them. We will always have refs who influence games as best they can to undermine us. They won't get any criticism from the Scottish media. I've never known of it in the past so I can't see it changing any time soon. Sometimes, they have been so bad that our managers have called for refs to be brought in from outside Scotland, a notion scoffed at by the self same media. Call me paranoid; I'm in good company.
-
Everything is beginning to unravel. The defenders are thin on the ground. A severe lack of confidence is abundant. Trepidation is rife. People mis firing all over the place.
When this happens it's time to close ranks and re group.
I am not talking about Celtic btw, I'm on about CQN posters.
Some of the vitriol spouted since Sunday is miles out, reactionary, agenda fuelled guff.
There are issues, no doubt, but there are ways and means of tackling them. Perpetuating a bandwagon of abuse is self defeating and unworthy.
If CQN is a gauge of how the supporters see the team then there is something wrong with the gauge.
Either that or the Celtic supporters have abandoned their spirit and belief en mass. Clearly that is not true so how come CQN is such a slog to get through?
If you feel the need to rant and cannot avoid getting personal then use your imagination, don't pick on individual Celtic players. Try something new.
Have a wee go at Leckie or Waddell, the gutless, snotter faced cowards who pander to a Jurassic institution and bait your team at every opportunity.
Or the fat, lazy arrogance of Traynor, the snide, twisted loneliness of Keevins and McNee, all of whom lack the guts and intelligence to think for themselves. Who feed like rabid warthogs on the negativity meted out here, in the hope and belief that it is actually a majority view.
What about the spineless ineptitude of the SFA, who keep the gravy train of incompetance and negligence rolling. Small, petty men who set up incompetent, buffoon like stoogies like Smith to maintain our laughing stock image worldwide.
Or how about the referees, wannabee grand masters, who were so bad at football, so uncoordinated and gormless, but still wanted to be a part of it. To hang about with real football players because even the girls thought they were wet. Now they seek acceptance from their masonic heroes by awarding and denying where appropriate, in order to acquire hollow empty platitudes.
If none of that appeals, choose a random target for your abuse, like the Hearts team of the eighties!
The biggest collection of psychotic thugs and frenzied morons ever cobbled together in maroon.
When times are tough (not by any stretch alarming) It's time to stand up for the Champions.

Can anyone remember the last time we were comfortable in an away cup tie? We lost at Inverness even with Henke in the team remember.
No one can say it was a good performance, but I always though getting through was what counted, it certainly does to the likes of Coventry this morning. I can guarantee the manager would have been slated this morning had the reserves gone out there last night and lost, Does anyone think he might have had Dundee watched and been told, they have 4 or 5 6foot plus guys in their team, they will lump it long all night. Like most lower league teams their best chances came at set pieces, same as it ever was. This was their cup final. Do you reckon that's how the Milan fans saw us in last season's CL?? Kind of puts our place in the grand scheme of things into perspective.
According to some posters on another site there were scarves being thrown away at the end of the game, the manager and players were booed by some "supporters". Hope this isn't true but would anyone really be overly surprised?
Sean South,
I think you may have opened one or two eyes last night with your post "I was at the end of some of Gordon'r humour 23 years ago,m didn't like it then, don't like it now" Gordon have a wee go at you while he was with Man Utd did he?
You also haven't replied to the post from yesterday when I aslked you if you would be happy with the 2 centre backs you proposed we sign who are now at Newcastle. Did you have a look at their records? Would you really be happy if we had signed them on very large wages? You picked two names from the top of your head, no background checks on how they performed last season etc but they are better than what we have apparently? Championship manager stuff if you ask me.
-

What´s the weather like in Glasgow today ? Yeah stupid question I know but surprise me.
On to the Dundee game. It was worth it for WGS post match interview alone.
Wee Mac Donald off the mark. Good goal by JVOH. I´d have loved to have seen Evander get off the mark.
Congratulations to Dundee. They look better than some of the SPL teams we have played. Two absolutely undebateable world class saves by Boruc. The usual referee shenanigans especially th elines man who kept flagging Mac Donald offside. It can only be described as an honest mistake ... but hey lets not hold that against the boys mother forever. Nice of JVOH to let Deek have a go. Deek next time leave it for JVOH - that was an awful penalty. Good to see John Kennedy again. A few more games under his belt and I think he will be our number 1 CB.

Celtic, like every other football club up and down the country, has supporters who like a good moan and a good whinge from time to time. Nothing wrong with that in my book, we're all different right? However to suggest that they should not be heard on here, that they should - as someone suggested earlier today - go away and support the fod, that’s plain crazy surely?. You have to remember guys that CQN is not the Celtic View, it reflects the true nature of our support, and obviously we are a fairly mixed bunch.
"Celtic Football Club is for people who want to support a football club that strives for excellence in Scotland and in Europe, is proud of its history, supportive of its local community and seeks to support the following aims: “To maximise all opportunities to disassociate the Club from sectarianism and bigotry of any kind. To promote Celtic as a Club for all people, regardless of gender, age, religion, race or ability.”
Strive for excellence - key phrase there - to achieve excellence maybe you need to look at things occasionally and then point out how you think it could be better. Surely we can tolerate that?
-
Itz,
Well said, there is no point of having this blog if other opinions aren't tolerated. Everything in the garden isn't rosy just now but it's not all doom and gloom either. Yes our defence has a weakness, as does our midfiled and forward line, but we also have real strengths and one of those is a will to win through bad performances, many Celtic teams of the past lacked this in spades.
Just a wee bit of positivity from some people on here would make a difference to the way they are perceived, as opposed to the "We're all doomed" negativity that strikes after a pooor performance. There were a few positives from last night, not many, but the main one was that we won a cup tie away from home.
-
Reading the print media is verboten
Those who ring the Clyde/BBC phone in are excoriated.
Those who criticize the team or the running of the club are vilified.
So round and round we go in ever decreasing circles until we disappear up our own a***hole
-
Itz - Everyone on here, as a Celtic fan, wishes for us to strive for excellence and I reckon that is one thing we can say unifies us all. In your final sentence you missed the word "constructively" after occasionally. If the usual suspects came on with a balanced view of what is working and what's not, recognise the constraints we operate within and don't give the impression that they are of the same ilk which exists at Celtic Park where their mind is made up even before kick off that "naylor is a numpty" and "mcgeady is rubbish" then the debate here would be enriched. From time to time their veil falls and we see the "I never liked Strachan" slip out for all to see.
Equally, the lack of tolerance and I must say arrogance from the doom sayers, giving us the "it's only people like me who have the club's interests at heart" and "you are all fools for believing Paul, the board and its apologists" without at times, any fact-based analysis. That forces a reaction. Time and again a kneejerk comment comes out (we should have bought x and y defenders but didn't), someone asks a reasonable question (look at their pedigree and price ?) and then silence. This is a great site with some great debate but one poster had last night's selection tagged as b*lls even before one was kicked.
So, all for it Itz, but let's start with achieving excellence on this site and then maybe we can avoid the kneejerk comments you pointed out..

First of all, hearty congratulations to the lads who knocked out Dundee.
It is never easy to win whilst being under media pressure; under pressure from the officials, under pressure from our opponents and under pressure from opposing fans. If some of the people who fought for Celtic, and unfortunately in the modern age of the game and maybe especially in Scotland you need to fight to win at times, against all odds, at Dens Park last night were to read some of the comments by " supporters " on here they would almost feel like chucking it.
CQN is a critical forum, Paul is not one for sitting on his laurels, look how far his statistics on our defence have resonated throughout Scotland in the critical analysis of where Celtic are at at this moment in time. No-one is being complacent on here. He is looking for standards and so we should .
Referee Brines has crossed our path before, The linesmen were being questioned on here as well, these are the guys who influence results big time. The cronies have taken over the SFA, they are not as influential as they once were, although they do their bit; away games to Aberdeen, Hibs and Rangers early in the season.
But the match officials, backed by the commentators, pundits and critics are cramping our style big time. This inluences enormously how things are perceived by all and sundry. A player gets pulled up for a foul which was a fifty fifty ball, a throw in is given the wrong way, an unjustified booking upsets our ryhthm, and then the manager is cautioned for merely questioning these displays of arbitrariness. All of this can undermine the symbiosis between the team and the supporters as we literally "lose the place" on the field and in the stands in the light of these travesties of justice. Those chinks in our armour are latched onto by our opponents. Let's stay symbiotic.
Unfortunately as we live in an age where stories are fabricated and no-one bats an eyelid as blatant lies are peddled then we could conclude that the game is undoubtedly a bogey. But fortunately some of us have been around long enough to call the shots and expose the whispering campaigns against Celtic. The first time around these currents unnerved us, now they don't and if anyone is under the impression that Gordon Strachan is not aware of what is going on all around him then think, think again.
Celtic, win, even when we are raw.

Meanwhile, over at Milan Quick News, posters are up in arms at their team's defeat, Ancelotti's post-match conference, the referee's performance and the fact that the opposition winning goal was set up by a girl !!!
"Carlo Ancelotti was left fuming after AC Milan's 2-1 defeat to Palermo last night.
"This loss really burns, first of all because it was undeserved and secondly as we were penalised by the referee. One more readily accepts defeat if it is deserved," said Ancelotti, who was upset with Palermo's equaliser scored after Amauri appeared to handle the ball.
" It was a serious error from the referee, like missing an open goal."
"It is no coincidence that the winning goal came from a free kick at the 93rd minute earned by Diana - a full-back. That is not defensive behaviour."

Looking back they will point to a penalty & a sending off, but this ref was shocking! The one constant in Refereeing is the overprotection of keepers, ye cannae even look at them but the ref blows! Nae mates again fir this Saturday's game - anybods meeting up pre-match? I promise by then I will have surfaced from the mine and will be positively enthusing about the game. In fact, I am keen on Saturday's tie. Utd have been doing well in the great scheme of things. Its an opportunity for the strikers to click before next week and for the defence to show some solidity (or do I mean solidarity?)
-
Last night proved that character exists within our team we played poorly and overcome a fighting Dundee side.
When we win the CIS Cup, no one will remember or care how we got there, as is the case with most cups.
The debate around the defence can be boring for some and unnerving for those who feel any constructive criticism of Celtic goes against agreed dogma. That said we all now see the deficiencies and I do agree its now not worth any more invective and the responsibility to fix this is clear. We have to wait until January and trust in Strachan and the sharp suited man.
I for one think they would be cutting their own careers short if they did not act and I think we will all be pleasantly surprised.
I would also hope we would make a bid for McDonald who along with McCarthy of Hamilton is the two shining lights outside the SPL and both good tim's so let’s get them.
Anyway onto Dundee Unt and let's hope we get a clean sheet.
-
Big Wavy,
Laughed out loud at that.
Gweedorebhoy,
I think you're right about Saturday should be a good game, I think Utd will be a tough test for us. They are a very good side defensively and in typical Levein style will contest everything. I tipped them to be this season's surprise outsider to challenge for 3rd spot.
Bad result for Milan last night, wonder when their last clean sheet was ;0)
Did anyone have the pleasure of watching Barca last night, what a 1st half of football. Messi was astonishing.
Poor result for Villa as well last night, both Petrov and Maloney played in as very strong Villa team. I believe Maloney came closest to scoring. Just shows you.

The great Brazilian teams of the past could get away with a tactical philosophy of consistently outscoring the opposition because they were a/Brazilian and b/Great.
Even whenwe had the King,CRS,BBJ and Lubo firing on all cylinders at one end of the park defensive lapses cost us the League eg beating Dundee 6-2,instead of 6-1.

We actually had a better defensive record than Rangers that year conceding 26 to their 28, we only had 98 goals to their 101 though. I think it actually was a lack of goals in games earlier in the season where we took the foot of the gas once the game was won that cost us. We only really started banging goals in again when we realised it was going to the wire. IE the Dundee 6-2 game.

Can't argue with that, don't think we'll have players as good as those two for a long long time, as good a partership as I have seen. We were lucky to get them both at a time when their careers were at a low and their valuations were lower than they realistically should have been.

plucky ECL winners ACMilan[h]
potential banana skin, dodgy defence testing Galacticos of Gretna[a]
bottompotters[a]
plucky Portuguese legends Benfica[a]
Anyways,we can stop worrying about our poor away record as wee Joe Mcgoebbels is gearing up to start on about Smiddy's record in the 90 minute hate.

As one who stuck up for wee Skippy when nearly everyone was claiming he was not good enough for the CL let me add my tuppence worth about Lee Naylor.
Yes, he has had his problems but last night he had one of his best games of the season. He ran his heart out, put in some good crosses and defended well, despite having little or no support on many occasions.
On Saturday let's applaud some of the good plays he makes instead of forever looking for mistakes and I am certain that given a little encouragement from the fans he will bounce back to his very best.
CQN is read by all knowledgeable supporters so why should we presume that it is not read by the players?
By all means criticize the team, where you feel it is warranted, but make it a constructive critique - without the vitriol.
Only by all of us pulling together can we hope to realize our dream of a winning Celtic team playing football the Glasgow Celtic way!
Hail! Hail!

Itz: Excellent post arguing for the inclusivity of all Celtic fans on CQN not just those who feel it is their duty to defend the club without ever analysing whether it is right or wrong.
Having read the jibes on here about posters like me being banished to Follow Follow and being compared to Keevins, frankly shows intolerance that is alien to the Celtic way and mor often found in Govan.
When you talk about "striving for excellence" it is something that I have always demanded from our board in my 50 years of supporting the club.
Because some fans will accept and settle for less somehow means that my views are largely unwelcome as far as the CQN clique are concerned.
But to those who would like to drive out dissenters should read Itz's words below carefully and decide whether they are actually upholding the ideals of the Celtic family which I believe has always espoused free speech.
"Ever thought of trying another forum, follow follow maybe?
Surely we can tolerate that?"
Great stuff, itz.
