McDonald and McGeady key for Celtic against United

We spend several million pounds on Scott Brown and Massimo Donati, both of whom look excellent value, but the fulcrum of this Celtic team has been kicking around the SPL for a few seasons; did we really pay only £700k for Scott McDonald?

His impact on Celtic has been as telling as Shunsuke Nakamura’s in his first few months in Scotland. Celtic play to his strengths; two-touch pass and run football. McDonald has the ability to get in front of defenders, hold and turn with the ball, he can pass and he can cross.

The valid point was raised on Celtic Quick News recently that his goal return to date was not that of a main striker, a record that has been enhanced considerably in his last two outings; four goals, two of them headers.

It might sound harsh to not to award Scott McDonald man of the match after his first hat trick for Celtic, but Aiden McGeady deserves that accolade. He is playing his best football since breaking into the team three years ago and is Celtic’s most improved player this season.

Playing on the right and frequently through the middle yesterday, his close control, change of pace and final ball were at their best. Three years ago when Milan came to Celtic Park, McGeady was the only Celtic player with the confidence, space and ability to hold the ball, which took pressure of his team mates.

A repeat performance on Wednesday night would be most welcome.

I knew Paul would start a new post while I was typing!!!

    Hi again,

Not posted for ages. Thought i'd back up what one poster said last night about playing our left and right midfielders on their natural side.

yesterday by playing mcgeady on his natural side and playing the more defensive hartley on the left we did not need to have doumbe and naylor feeling like they had to bomb forward and get crosses in.

this meant they were just defending. no more gaping holes at the back.

i think until naka is back playing hartley on the left is wise as naylor needs a bit of help and protection at the moment.(from us too!!)

jvoh seems to be getting it tight the now but when you've got our left and right midfielders now getting to the by-line and whipping crosses back into the box he's going to get you goals.
the supply he'd been getting amounted to these high looping crosses from naylor which were no good to him.

defenders will mop these kind of balls up all day. sutton and hartson didn't like these crosses.
they would have been the first to tell agathe and thomson to get to the by line first.

our first goal proved it yesterday.
our third for skippy proved the benefit of having mcgeady on his natural side.

by playing this system we have better crosses in the box AND protection for our full backs.

On the appointment of John Reid my only concern is when in his lifetime has he managed a company?
In Brian Quinn we had a former Bank of England manager.

He has a hard act to follow.

Can anyone from the north stand verify this one from yesterday because I was raging at the ref.

When skippy first-time flicked the cutest of cute passes through to jvoh yesterday in the first half was it offside?

Just another reason why I was off my seat so many times at this absolute calamity of a referee.

We won 3-0 despite the dougie mcdonald yesterday.

But I for one was waiting for, though not praying for, a lay off for JVOH. I think he's a bit lost in the team just now. For his size, I find him ineffectual at hold up play and he seems to be spending a lot of games getting up of the grass swearing. he's too easily managed off the ball. I look forward to seeing how WGS aporaches his line-up without JVOH, because it's obvious he's usually one of the first on the team sheet. A great opportunity for our remaining forwards to... Carpe Diem!

    Final score:AV Milan 1, Catania 1

Really think we can get a result against AC on Wednesday after watching them struggle to overcome a workmanlike Catania side.

They had a hard 90 minutes and looked weary and jaded and lacking self-belief.Some real class acts such as Kaka, Gatuso, Oddo, Seedorf and Pirlo, but Catania coped comfortably.

Inzaghi and Gilardinho looked poor and Gilardinho got dogs abuse from his own fans.

And it took a well dodgy penalty to get AC a draw. It was an identikit of Gary Caldwell against Spartak with the Catania player sliding across the grass and the shot striking him on the arm without any deliberate attempt to play the ball.

Catania, who had won only once in Serie A this season, restricted AC to largely shooting from long range and AC's build-up started to become rally laboured and slow as they struggled to find a way past the packed Catania defence.

I think if Gordon Strachan can bring some solidity the defensive aspect of our side then we have a much better chance than I initially thought.

I would like to see us go with a 4-5-1 formation with little Scott McDonald on his own up front.

With McDonald on fire at the moment I am praying for a 2-1 win to Celtic.

    Can't wait for Wednesday now.

AV Milan: That's a new team I have invented. My disjointed typing reminded me of AC's thoroughly disjointed display this afternoon.

With 60,000 roaring on the Celts on Wednesday night Parkhead will be rocking and I am confident we can end our scoring drought against them.

If we can get the same numbers of players behind the ball as Catania did we can certainly frustrate them like the way they were today.

Their front two were devoid of ideas, had no understanding of each other's play and were firing blanks. Long may that continue.

Th body language of AC's players suggested that it is not a happy camp in Milan at the moment.

But I don't have to warn fellow Celts that the man who inspire them and change the game is Kaka.

If we can isolate and contain him for 90 minutes we could pull off a victory of massive proportions against the European Champions.

And that would be an even greater triumph than beating Manchester United last season.

No-one's took me up on the comparison of goals scored between the first eight league games of last season and this season. Last season we'd scored 14 with 5 of the 8 at home. This term we've scored almost double (27) with only four home matches played.

The darnel have scored 24 and we have responded well.

I think it's an interesting statistic.

I agree and have discussed this with others plenty.

i think the reason he doesnt is because Naka doesnt have the pace to get to the byline and is much more effective when he comes inside.

That little feint and shift of weight he does is sublime and as often as not results in him winning a free kick.

I thing Aiden is better on the right but hes being sacrificed to the left for Naka -- by and large it works , but on Aiden's current form it might need to change.

Personally I'd like to see them switch during the games more often.

    Sir Paul.......

    Missed the game yesterday.
Just watched the re-run on Chan67.

    Twice..... as is my wont.

    Here is my observations:

    I agree with you,pal...

    Young McGeady was super.
He has found his proper niche,on the right.

Why Mr.Strachan...has persisted on playing Aiden on the Left,is a mystery.

Aiden was very comfortable in every way,now that he was on his preferred side of the field.
His Crosses, in particular were, DEADLY and Accurate.

It is also a plus that Scott Mac. feasts on passes from the RIGHT!

And his partnership with his dashing and bustling namesake, will provide a bushel of goals,as time goes by.

I agree with my friends, in that I am disappointed that the Celtic powers that be are determinedly insistent, in playing a Large, Muscle Bound, Behemoth, as a Center Forward, when it is self-evident...
That a Guid Wee Yin...is Always better than a Big Stumbling Big Yin.

    Examples of this abound...

Joe McBride, Bobby Lennox,Dixie Dean,Larsson,ad infinitium....even Chris Sutton, WAS NOT A PROLIFIC SCORER... Big John did score consistently, but he was the exception...and his partnership with the peerless Mr.Larsson did not hurt one little bit.

It goes without saying that Jvoh in particular, although he is blessed(?) in Stature...

    SELDOM WINS A HEADING DUEL!

... and when he does come out on tops after a clash of bodies, is frequently accused of fouling.

Thereby, cancelling out, whatever advantages that exist,in the strategy of playing a man of his physical attributes as a spear-head.

The Milan game is shaping up to be an anticipatory heart stirrer.

I am confident, as usual, that Celtic will once again, rise to the occasion, at the Parkhead Citadel.

    As I have aleady mentioned.

Mr.McGeady has been played in his TRUE POSITION...

Whether, this has been brought about by pure chance, or... as I would like to think...
    By Design...
It is never the less... an eye opener!

    Please, Gordon...

Retain Aiden on the Right Side!
    You will not regret it.

    Kojo.

P.S. the Three Cousins are right...

Double Drum should be the Celtic choice for Right Back.

In yesterday's encounter, he played a very STEADY Game... and he proved that his crosses into the opposition territory, although few in number, were dangerous.

I also noticed that there were very few crosses into the Celtic Goalmouth, emanating from Celtic's Right flank, thanks to the staunch and tenacious tackling of Joe.

I really don't get why people are not appreciating Jan so far this season. I think he's been holding the ball up well and yes I admit he doesn't run around as much as Scott but neither do I want him to though. He went off injured yesterday but his time on the park I thought he was working really hard and was involved in the goal as well as almost breaking their offside trap a couple of times but for poor decisions from the linesman and a better final ball from our players. But most importantly Jan is scoring for fun and Scott claims he enjoys playing with him. They're only gonna get better the more they play with each other.

his goals (Which I cannot term as being scored for fun) are masking an out of sorts player. I can honestly say I do not know Jan's true worth to Celtic. Please don't (Anyone) bombard me with stats - I'm talking BBJ against Liverpool here.

As I said earlier, there's a bit of me pleased Gordon Strachan has to field a team without Jan. Time will now tell.

    U.

JVOH has not the guts or guile of Chris Sutton, who when not scoring goals, was making them for Henke.

I see it as a one way street in regards to Skippy and JVOH right now - even Aiden's against Hibs was started by Skippy.

    Hi all
Far more positives than negatives from yesterdays game.
Artur kept us ahead when we were cut open on the deck down the middle in the second half
Joe Doumbe had a solid game, the midfield worked hard and I think Paul Hartley is now playing with belief
The refereeing was a joke and the ammount of times McDonald penalised Celtic and let the Arabs away with the same offence is not in my opinion honest mistakes
At times Massimo needs to win more 50/50 balls too often he gives the impression he is trying to nick it past the opponent rather than putting in a solid challenge but some of his passing is a joy.
Scott MacDonald is working like a trojan and is now scoring regularly.
The defence really only allowed the previous chance and a header for Dodds who found himself free at the back post.
On to Wednesday then, a win would be a massive result but we find it difficult to create clear chances against this team so hears hoping for a change in this.

i agree with you re JVOH

he gets pelters from some on this site ...much of which i think is unjustified

i think he has scored 6 goals this season , as good as anyone in the league and i think he has laid on a few

he can look a bit languid at times but i think thats just the way he is

having watched killen miss a few sitters of late i know who i would rather have in my team

    as for the other alteratives

Magic has had enough chances ..his time is up

and Riordan with SMcD would be too lightweight

You are not alone in your admiration of the qualities that Jvoh represents, resulting in utilizing a Tall Strong Leader as an attacking spearhead.

I and my friends beg to differ.

It seems to me that this strategy is a failed one.

My primary objection to using a Tall, Strong Center Forward, is this...

IT ENCOURAGES THE TYPE OF PLAY THAT IS EXAMPLED IN THE SHELLING OF THE HIGH AND HOPEFUL BIG KICK, DOWN THE CENTER OF THE PARK!

This is done, of course, more in HOPE than in anything else.
It is certainly a useless method of attack.
As... in the case of Jvoh...
He seldom wins balls in the air, especially when his back is to his opponents goal.

The result is .... LOST POSSESSION to our opponents, who immediately are in the position to mount a swift counter attack.

This tactic,of using the High Forward Pass, which is frequently employed by the Celtic Defenders,is silly... in light of the sparseness of any advantages that accrue...therefore... defeats logic.

Mobile , Tricky, Quick of MIND... and Fleet of Foot, Raiders...
Have always been, and will always remain,as my preference.

You and I shall never be in agreement on this subject.

You see it your way and I do not.

I think Jan is a different type of player to what people expect him to be. As he is a big guy people expect him to be a bruising target man but I think he's more of a poaching striker who plays on the edge but one who is adept at playing the target man as well. For this you don't want him dropping deep all instead you want him lurking around the box.

I would consider Macdonald to be our target man which can also explain why if you ignore his goals yesterday his goal to game ratio wouldn't be as impressive. Macdonald drops off well and picks the ball up in great positions and moves away with speed and close control. As he's always dropping off he's not in the box as much as he could be to score more.

I think these are the roles they're being asked to play and I think they're doing them well, but that's personal opinion. I think some(not all) are analysing the performance of the players, Jan in particular, and expecting him to do the things Macdonald is doing.

I would also expect Killen to be the alternative target man if Macdonald isn't around and Zurawski to be the prowling poacher if Jan is out. ALthough we have a number of options.

More so, I know we don't have complete confidence in Zurawski but I don't think he's as far out of the picture as some think.

thanks for your reply Kojo. You make some valid points but there are somethings worth mentioning.

You rightly make the point that our players often punt the ball forward to the tall man in hope when there isn't any midfielders making themselves available for the pass or if they're just lacking creativity at that point. But this isn't Jan's fault. Is it fair that he should be punished for defenders punting the ball to him all the time especially when he's also up against big 6.2ft+ defenders as well? I think he wins quite a lot of headers but you're right it is irrelevant if he does or not because even if he does win the header he's going to find it hard to find another Hooped player against a well organised defense and this leads to a loss of organisation.

I also think that one of Jan's greatest abilities is holding the ball up and linking with others when he recieves the ball on the deck. I think he does this more often and I think the team would benifit much more if we looked to play the ball to him across the grass.

This is a healthy debate to have all the same. I think we have a few options available if we want to alter things a bit. I just thought I'd show some support for Jan though.

I agree with sean about JVoH, particularly the holding the ball up at the deck and McDonald being able to hold it up aswell.

However I feel that JVoH should be coming off for Killen instead of McDonald (and Mcdonald for Zurawski). When Killen and JVoH were upfront the pace and guile McDonald brings is missed so badly. I actually think that Killen and Skippy could do a good job together although wish I had more evidence to base it on than Saturday.

Aye, it always looks funny when you see it written down. G before an i or an e in Spanish is always the same sound as J, that's to say our 'ch' sound in loch.

Geta, the short form of their name, sounds just like jeta, which means you've got a brass-neck, that you're a cheeky upstart, which is exactly what this team was last year when it gave Barcelona a hammering in the cup last season to overcome a substantial first-leg deficit and go through to the final.

They are managed by Michael Laudrup, who was the best player in his family.

    Shucks.

Just for you, this wee tale about Baptista.

When he scored the decisive goal in Real Madrid's home win against Betis on Thursday night (2-0), I was in a cracking old-style restaurant in the capital, near the Avenida de América.

This place has not changed one iota since I started going to it 20 years ago to watch the football highlights programme on Sunday nights. I didn't have a TV.

I like that. I like the fact that some things don't change.

Not all change is bad. The whole area is much more multi-cultural than when I lived there, with lots of Latin American people to be seen and heard on the streets, plus a fair number of black and Asian people.

I didn't watch the game, but told the waiter that I'd know if there was a goal from the noise of his regulars in the bars downstairs and shuffle over to see the replays.

The noisiest guys in the bar were four affluent looking guys in their 20s. The loudest of them, when Baptista scored his fine goal, kept saying: "El Negro. Ha sido el Negro. Gol del Negro."

Even people with little Spanish will recognise the vocabulary that got national team coach Luis Aragonés into such hot water in 2004.

How foul it sounded in these now cosmopolitan surroundings. And I'm sorry, but my experience is that Real Madrid has more of a problem with its support in this regard than most other clubs in Spain.

Perhaps there is an 'establishment club syndrome'. What a doctoral thesis that would make.

    Hooptatic.

That explanation sound's very unlikely to me.

TheBarcaMole, Scott has scored or has an assist with the overwhelming majority of our goals this season. Comparing this to Naka’s early contributions at the club is statistically testable; I suspect that it would hold up to scrutiny.

Noel, the disagreement was over Celtic’s wages compared to the wages of the “majority of the clubs in the FA Premier League”. Brian Quinn said our wages were comparable with all apart from the top five, Martin O’Neill said he was told that this was not the case (which it was).

The led to the ‘abacus’ incident.

Hooptastic, there was never any question of Martin O’Neill returning.

The debate about John Reid is no doubt a valid one, although it's all a bit "student politics" for my tastes. However, at 20.36 yesterday Kano brought out the big guns, with a list of people who, he implies, don't need a court to be considered war criminals - of the same type as Dr Reid, I assume.

One or two of the names on that list (Guevara? Chavez?) might be debatable. One - Salvador Allende - needs, I would suggest, to be justified. Particularly given the tone of Kano's posts about the political views of others. So what, exactly, makes Allende a war criminal?

I was going to say that Broadfoot had lost it a long time ago, but as a former daily reader, I think it's really that he never had it in the first place.

The guy is indicative of the mediocrity of the Herald now, and I'm not just talking about the sports pages.

There are still some decent writers there, and they have recently gone through horrible cut-backs, leading to strike action.

Quite how Broadfoot survived the cuts is beyond me.

I was talking to someone who commentates on Radio 5 Live, not Roddy Forsyth, but a good friend of his, who told me that the print media had recently insisted on having separate briefings from those their broadcast and online colleagues attended. I didn't know that.

If you think about it, it's a tacit admission that what we once needed the newspapers for in our quest for information about our clubs is on offer to us 24 hours a day.

    R. Murdoch, as I've said before on here, never said a truer word when he told the BBC that all media outlets still had a future as long as they offered quality content that their audience could not get elsewhere.

If the Herald is doing that, in any of its sections, these days, I'd be happy to hear about it. Michael Tumelty's reviews of concerts are really the only example I would consider for inclusion.

David Murray will look on this as a good use of Rangers supporters' money.

    O'Neill and Strachan

In many ways Strachan had a harder job on his hands at the start of his reign than MON. Not because of May 05 but because O'Neill had been so successful.

Martin quickly made a rod for his own back with the early success he enjoyed back to back leagues and a Euro final in 3 quick years. All help to raise anyones expectations for the club. 2003-04 was also great. In sharp contrast to 2004/05 wich was a major shock to the system.

However back in the summer of 2000 (before 6-2 and the instant turnaround in our fortunes) we would have quite easily settled for a one off league title.

Now after all the success we have enjoyed just winning the league is not enough for some, it must be accompanied with a run in Europe.

Therefore thanks to Martin's success the Celtic manager's job is now much more difficult.

But thankfully Gordon is doing a grand job.

    Scotland on Sunday today.

A Labour MSP "Singing the Sash is not Sectarian"

A church of Scotland Minister " Celtic fans and Catholics revel in deing downtrodden and have romantic notions about Ireland"

Duffield "It all starts with Catholic Schools - it gives them the appearance of being different"

OK so we have been rumbled - we all love the number of panalties denied and the fact that in 4 of the last 5 games Rangers have had dubious ones awarded - it really makes us feel great.

Duffield wake up we are different.
As are Italians, Indians, Muslims, Jews - it's a multi-cultural society. However being a Celtic Supporter and God forbid a Catholic or even worse someone who dares to Bless - (NOT cross) themself( I'd be OK with Make the sign of the Cross)or ever muttering the dreaded words - shhhh
Irish , Ireland or any associated word - is a cause for national uproar.

I thank the Scotland on Sunday for exposing this book on Rangers - it will be a right laugh to read - provided your blood pressure can take it.

Whilst the points raised so far are valid does nobody find the opening stretch rediculous. Firstly, without having been at the meeting, decides that the Committee upheld Dougal's view? There is no record of this anywhere. He then goes on to castigate Strachan as a serial offender of something that he dislikes and suggests that Celtic and Strachan are guilty of 'legal simulation' by deciding to apepal against a stonewall case that is fully supported??

Luckily there are no current vacancies for investigative reporters for anything of consequence!

I went to the game, but on hindsight I should have stayed in hospital overnight, now I'm trying to get up the strength to get to Celtic Park on Wednesday.

On the game, Aiden was better than I've seen him for a while,But unlike Paul I did'nt think he was MOTM,If Scott McDonald had'nt scored the hat-trick and worked tirelessly all match, then Aiden would get my nomination as MOTM,but a hat-trick does it every time for me.

Lastly,I thought Celtic were an all inclusive club, embracing everyone that wants to support them.
Celtic first at 23.30 on the last thread made a good point.

I'm talking about John Reid taking up the Chairmans job,I'm not a great lover of JR but some of the comments are a bit over the top.

I'm going to sit on the fence for a while, regarding the future chairman, but I'd like to say this about him,he'll argue Celtic's corner fehemenently and he'll probably win the arguement, thats why he had so many jobs in government,he was a troubleshooter.

Shocking decision not to award a penalty to Motherwell. Strangely not commented upon by McCall and Hendry.
As for their penalty, Beasley was looking for it and referee duly obliged.

My take on the Rangers penalty was that Beasley got into the area and then basically stopped trying to get away from the defender, felt him at his back and fell over.

Motherwells penalty... If that collision had happened in midfield, Motherwell free kick would have been the decision.

Very pleased with yesterday - lets hope we show some courage on Wed - a real up and at em performance will scare a Milan side who seem genuinely rattled by their poor start to the season.

I think at times you protest too much Paul - your articles are becoming increasingly slanted - the subtext too easy to read - you dont have to do this you know (and generally more expensive players are better - not always mind - but you know market forces n that).

The aricle on the SoS was fascinating. This book is the response to Celtic Minded and various other intellectually minded and challenging discussions on Celtic. As the article says they feel their side is not being put.

I think its quite right they get the chance to make their case - because the beauty of it is how silly they look. If the Smith article proves to be as one sided as the SoS are making out he has made a grave mistake. We will have the opportunity to show him up for what he is - we cannot miss it. Its a massive error of judgement.

As for the rest of the articles it will be the usual attempt to defend the indefensible. This is again terrific as it will be the ultimate shot in the foot. They cant help it - they believe in the nonesense - but any rationale person reading this tripe will have the growing concensus on Rangers (i.e. backward and embarrassing) firmly confirmed.

It is interesting indeed that when the Celtic books came out there was in fact very little about Rangers in there - whereas I imagine this will all be about us.

My favourite will be the one about how we revel in our victim status - a classic attempt to dehumanise those who you would subjigate - brilliant - should be a right riviting lead with a public campaign to rid ourselves of the puppet CEO of the SFA to follow - will that make 3 of them? Do we get to keep the next one?

I'm sorry Edward - but its all rather sadly true - any attempt to make an academic argument over the inherent bigotry and prejudice will end in tears for your "institution".

Gordon Smiths views taken from the SOS article.

SFA chief executive Smith said in his section of the book: "Growing up in Ayrshire, the biggest factor I encountered in terms of the Catholic-Protestant divide was in schools football. I think it is one of the saddest thing in our society. I have nothing against Catholic schools, but there is no doubt about it: in the west of Scotland it brings in an inclination right away to think of people being different.

"We played against schools with names like St Mary's or St Peter's and the games were very competitive. When you are competitive with someone then you automatically think they are the enemy. That was the case with me."

Well as someone who also grew up in Ayrshire I can tell Gordon Smith that if the biggest "factor" he witnessed of bigotry in Ayrshire was catholic schools then he clearly had his eyes closed and ears covered for a large part of his life.

Walk down the street of many an Ayrshire town in July and you will see flags and banners of sectarianism freely on display. Every Saturday from May to August orange marches are in progrees in almost every town. Sectarian attacks on catholics are common and frequently extemely violent. Catholic churches are regularly vandalised.

I could carry on all day about the stench of bigotry that prevails in Ayrshire find it deeply insulting that Gordon Smith chooses to ignore every evidence of anti-catholic hatred to lay the blame at the door of Catholic schools. Its the last refuge of the religious bigot to try to deflect blame away from yourself and onto the doorstep of the victims.

"When you are competitive with someone then you automatically think they are the enemy." What on earth is this supposed to mean. Does that mean you are the enemy of every team that gives you a good game. I take it many non-denom schools also gave GS's school a good game so where they the enemy as well. Will France now declare war on Scotland because they lost to them in a tight match and will Israel launch a first strike on England. Perhaps we should expect trouble from the Milan fans if we play well on Wednesday.

Its laughable I know but this shows the type of man we are dealing with. Its only catholic school teams who were the enemy because they were catholics Gordon. Get it?

This must be a huge mistake by Duffield and he shold be called to account. Will he? I doubt it but lets not be kidded, this mans an out and out bigot of the most odious kind and will do everything he can to undermine us as a club.

    Summer is now officially over.
The Boys of Summer have completed their 162 game schedule and the coming week sees the start of Baseball’s Fall Classics.
October is also shaping up to be a real meaningful month for our club’s ambition to win the 21st century’s first three in a row in the SPL.

We have a varied fixture list, with 3 league games against Gretna, Rangers and Motherwell, 2 CL matchups against Milan and Benfica and then end the month with a CIS cup game against Hearts.
Six victories will see us all in seventh heaven and firmly on track for a treble.
(Dare to dream the big dream)
Buoyed by victory against Milan, our visit to Gretna ML1 next Sunday should be a guaranteed three points, and see us pull away from our closest challengers, before we meet, greet and beat them on the 20th. My prediction is for a 2-0 victory. Note the away clean sheet.
Mark McGhee’s resurgent Motherwell will be the next SPL side to try and breach our goal at Celtic Park just three days after our Lisbon trip.
Why are we being forced to play just 3 days after a CL game when Rangers get 5 days to recover from a HOME game?
Despite the travel rigours, Celtic have too much class in depth for Motherwell to repeat last Saturday’s moral victory.

Rangers would seem to have a marginally tougher SPL fixture list with all their October games being against the other teams in the top 4, Hibs, our good selves and Dundee United. Although they face third placed Hibs at Ibrox,
(how fortunate that the random computer fixture list gave them 2 home games in a row after a European tie)
based on their lucky point against the 5th placed Motherwell on Saturday, they are brittle enough to drop at least 2 points especially after their trip to Lyons.
A Celtic victory at Ibrox will see us 6 points clear. With their early form and confidence draining away Barcelona and Dundee United should pile on the misery for Rangers’ fans.

I expect All Hallows’ Eve will heap further horror on Rangers' fans as they wake up to the realization that
Aberdeen, Celtic, Dundee United and Motherwell are in the draw for the CIS Cup semi final,
Celtic are at least 7 points to the good in the SPL and......
they are third in the league behind Hibernian.

    ‘GG checking his crystal ball.

you cant draw the conclusion that gordon smith is a bigot because there was a rivalry between schools football, and because he viewed his local rivals as the enemy

anyone who ever played football at schools level in the west of scotland , and that probably means most on this board, will recognise the intense nature of that rivalry......because we wanted to badly beat our nearest neighbouring school , and viewed them as the enemy, does not make US bigots...it was just a rivalry

personally speaking at my school we had as intense a rivalry with the next closest catholic school as they were a much better team than the local non denominational one..

Smith is speaking only about catholic schools or Schools with saint names in front. The rivalry he is alluding to is BECAUSE these schools were catholic schools and because the games were competative he regarded catholics as the enemy. This is the gist of what he is saying as a explanation of why in his opinion catholic schools are the "biggest factor I encountered in terms of the Catholic-Protestant divide "

Its religious bigotry pure and simple.

But while the invitation appears to have been extended only to the Daily Record and the Scottish Sun, at least one other newspaper was also able to devote large coverage to the Lennoxtown development.

But Spike understands that a member of the Scottish Daily Mail staff just so happened to be passing the building at the time of the Record and Sun’s visit.

    Morning fhellas,

Doesn't the SPL table look good ? Lots of great debate at the weekend on here but my favourite quote of the weekend came at the end of an insipid Milan display when the commentator said :

"This is a team who are just not enjoying their football at the moment"...

If Kaka can mysteriously go down with food poisoning then we just may be on to something....

    Wednesday night. I can't wait.

    hail hail

    Big Wavy

    Andrew,
some strikers only win headers when in sight of goal. Mr Broadfoot probably plays in defence. :-)

    Setting Free

David Blunkett's dog does have a link to Scottish Timdom.

During the intense talks on the use of the former prison at Dungavel to house asylum seekers and their families, the emeritus bishop of Paisley, John Mone, flew the flag for the asylum seekers.

This by the way was long before the SSP and others took up the cause.

Bishop Mone was summoned to Westminster to hear at first hand why the UK government felt it was fair to keep children locked up in Dungavel.

He had to use all his skill as a diplomat to find the right moment to bring into the conversation a request to pat the dog's head on behalf of a parishioner in Paisley.

    Morning fellas,

I'm sure most of you heard strachans post match interview after the win on saturday.

I just listened to it and his comment about Nakamura made me laugh.

Reporter: So is Nakamura going to be fit for wednesday

WGS: I couldn't tell you, last time a seen him his mouth was full of sangwiches! and his translator was nowhere to be seen! so no, I couldn't tell you if he will be fit for wednesday.

I honestly don't understand why some fans think that Gordon's "attitude" with the media is embarassing. Most of these interviews are verbal swordfights in which these guys are hoping to get another headline of "strachan says....". More power to your elbow Gordon.

    P.S

Did anyone else notice that Hibs are just 1 point behind us and the FOD.

Couldn't believe it when I saw the table this morning.

    Well Done John Collins.

To the purists amon us ( which must be all of us, I presume) tomoorow we have the chance to honour THE player above all who epitomises playing football the Celtic Way: George Connelly. He was THE outstanding talent (IMO) among Danny, Kenny Dalglish and Davy Hay (and, of course, that is really saying something).

I well remember his keepie-up against Dynamo Kiev, I think, when he was only about 15. Up and down the pitch from the old Celtic End and back. No sweat whatever. But what stays with me was his sheer class on the ball. 40 50 yards passes no bother at all.

His contribution against Leeds Und was probably his most important but the goal that sticks in my head is the one against rangers, where he mugged captain blood and scored at a canter. He seemed to efortlessly stroll through games. Wonderful memories, especially to sustain me on a day when the nerves are already jangling.

Anyone got a link to George Galloway's comments about our rival's nice wee song?
