McDonald key to Celtic win at profane Love St

There is something about Celtic’s passing this season that is completely different from what we have seen in, I reckon, 3 ½ years. We haven’t seen it as crisp and varied as this since our last great team had its final flurry at the Nou Camp in 2004.

The supporting cast of Hartley, Sno and Riordan played well enough yesterday to produce a two goal lead by half time, though the torment of St Mirren stepped up apace when Massimo Donati entered proceedings after the break. And what a disappointment Evander feeling under the weather was; let’s hope he gets another start soon.

I am sure you all saw this week’s dink from Scott McDonald; over the goalkeeper for the second goal. Have you ever seen a player under-hit the ball with as much effect? So many strikers would have tried to knock ball and keeper into the net with that chance.

It was really important that McDonald scored quickly after missing those chances on Wednesday night. Successful Celtic strikers need to sweat goals, they need to have the ball ricochet off their knees into the net, something we missed last year.

His work for the opening goal was equally impressive.

I was concerned about the trip to Paisley after Celtic fans were bated so ashamedly by the home club last season, but despite St Mirren fans singing their profane hearts out intermittently, the club itself did not rally against ethic diversity on this occasion, and the Celtic support gave a text book lesson on what following a football team is all about.

If you are based in London, some Celtic Quick News readers are planning to charter a flight for the away Champions League games. Get in touch via the About page if you would like to find out more.

    Hello fellow hoopsters.

A pal has just bought 4 season tickets for the family for area 115 in the Lisbon Lions Stand. She's now having a wee panic and wondering if they're ok seats. I'm in the North Stand so I haven't a scooby - anyone know if they're good seats? They're the non-rangers game tickets - anyone know what games they include instead of these games?

I am quite happy with the way the fixtures have fallen.

Ain't really got time to dissect it right now, but will happily do so over the next few days.
Might end up talking a lot of tosh but then again... it might even be worse than that.

    Oldtim67:

you Sir, you hold on to your beliefs. I'd much rather approach adversity in hope and anticipation, than do so, in dread and trepidation.

In support, nobody twists your arm in choice. Your choice is yours, and ...yours alone.

Oldtim67, you choice is my choice. Bring it on. After all isn’t that what it is all about.

If you are to fear it, then don't, confront it.

The big league. The big boys. The big nights. The airless highs and the drowning lows.

In the Champions League it really should be, ‘we don’t care if we win lose or draw’,
Because DBBIA in that league, painful as it may be, we are the paupers. Just means that every point we gain is that much more sweeter.

We are the underdogs that no favourite wants to draw.
Can we beat Benfica? Of course we can.
Can we beat Milan? Why not? Are simplistic records not there to be broken?
Can we qualify out of this group?
    Why not?
Did we not do similar last year?

    Oldtim67:

What can I say. You are bold,to predict so boldly, but I would comfortably, second your faith.

McDonald was outstanding yesterday, his finish was sublime.

his movement, strength and ability to get in there for the chances (even if it means missing some) have impressed me greatly.

He cud turn out a bargain at £700K

as for Brown, in my opinion he is the best midfielder in britain behind gerrard

he has everything and will only get better

*everyone keeps saying their defence is outstanding. It's not; they've conceded as many League goals as our much derided sieve. AND they've only played 1 team who was in the top half of the table last year...

MattTheBhoy :- Can you point me to the places that those diescriptions were given of Rangers players as even the most diehard Rangers fan I talk to wouldn't say that. No one I know has said that Barca won't be an extremely difficult game at Ibrox with an exponential jump in difficulty in Barcelona. If the current league leaders are so bad it doesn't say much for your own team :-)

Would have to agree (2 days in a row now - getting scary), with your 1st paragraph.

I know it was only St Mirren, but at times yesterday the one touch football and possession looked more befitting the European stage than the SPL. The whole team looked comfortable on the ball, and the plan appears to be to keep the ball on the ground.

"If God had wanted us to play football in the clouds, he'd have put grass up there.
    Brian Clough"

The SPL will undoubtedly be more competitive this season, Rangers have spent money, some of it wisely, and I would expect that they will get a number of dodgy decisions in their favour. (will Andy Davis be brought back ?)

They will play good old fashioned blood and guts football, a style which their support are happy with.
(Greatest ever Celt - Jinky - Greatest ever Hun - John Greig - says it all really doesn't it)

We will play football "The Glasgow Celtic Way"

We know we will win, there is no other option.

Celticlover :- I agree with you, for some strange reason it seems that most of our "star" players through the ages have also had deep flaws in their personal character, I think if you removed the self destruct button that so many of them have they would lose the gallus side of their play.

Cardiffbhoy ;- I know I may well be wrong but wasn't Jinky voted Celtics greatest ever player while J. Grieg was voted greatest ever Ranger, a subtle difference but an important one.
A very slight complaint but if I recall corectly at the time of Mr Grieg hun was a word used for the Celtic support.

I dont think I've ever went to a game not feeling confident, your confidence gets a knock at times but after a couple of days I'm back to being as confident as ever.

I don't think I would go to a game if I was'nt confident Celtic would win it,even when we were playing "hard to watch" football, I'd go to the next game full of the same confidence.

I was confident when I went to Lisbon in 67,Inter at that time were without doubt the best defensive team in the world, unbeatable,But they did'nt know we were on the verge of greatness,I did, because I had watched Celtic growing up from bhoys, into a formidable team, each one playing their part
in making Celtic great to watch in that era.

I feel the same about this team,on the verge of something good.

    Watching Barca and Real tonight.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Watched both games tonight and have came to the conclusion that we can take points from Barcelona at home and away. The spanish giants don't seem as though they want to fight for every ball, every second ball. Eventhough there passing is unbelievable and they can put the ball anywere they want too , I think if everyone of our players close down there players quickly then we can take points from them . When they lose the ball they dont run after it to try and regain possession and this is where we can hurt them . Once they give away possession if we get the ball to the right players then I feel we are on to at least 3 points

A fighting spirit and self-confidence is the key to these matches.

Holyrood pitch and putt championship, dogging school, YOU? I always put you in with the clean shirt and Blazer every day and 100% attendance brigade. I can't remember you getting the goalie's jersey dirty?( ha! Ha!)

I do remember once dodging into a close as we were marching in two's( 16 yrs old-what shame) to Holy Cross church and falling over you and your mates playing brag.

Sorry Paul, don't mean to turn this blog into a messenger but this guy Celtic Lover was definitely one of those rare, clean cut, blazer with braid, prefect types, who was in real life an absolute nutter and could get you in all sorts of trouble without even trying. One of those 'from the sublime to the Cor Blimey' type of guys.

I can still imagine him walking in and out of all those lovely old churches in St Andrews, ringing the bells and running away!

Anyway, CL what about the shares and DD.? Spill the beans, what do you know?

Sorry, I'm forgetting to whom I am corresponding. Perhaps you should have parked the shares at suppertime and taken them back after croissants and freshly ground coffee.

the problem with the post is that it is delusional....toure is a younger version of patrick viera, his job is to get the ball off of the opposition, xavi is a more gifted version of neil lennon...rarely gives the ball away, is hugely adept at pinching it from the oposition and moves all over the midfield to keep things flowing....kicking, snarling blood and snotters won't intimidate barca....every team in Spain tries to close them down....your last visit to our wonderful city has been mentioned more than a couple of times in the local press here, as has your uefa sanctions and your overly robust style of play....Barca will be plenty motivated to get all 6 points ....

Thoroughly enjoyed watching yesterday's game at Love Street - as with all of the game's so far this season. The football on show has been a joy at times.
Agree on Donati - he just adds "something" to the midfield - what a bargain.
Agree on everything that's been said so far on Scott Brown - a Gerard in the making. However, I wasn't a fan of the antics with the St Mirren player and the mickey-taking - fair enough he's a gallus young guy but I don't think that kind of thing is a trait of Celtic players. Mostly because I think it's bad "karma" (I'm no hippie BTW) but these things sometimes come back on you. Mind you, Stevie MBE was also like that at his age, so I guess it comes down to maturing as a player.

Barcabhoy & Italiabhoy :- To be honest I expect us to take one point from the two games with Barcelona. However if at Ibrox we keep harrying and snapping at heels there is always the chance we will take the three points. I think we are capable of taking six points from the other two games at Ibrox so I'm fairly confident of third place in the group and perhaps with a bit of luck get the second spot.
On the visit to Barcelona I would hope there would be no trouble and hope that Ibrox security and the Barcelona police manage to keep things calm between them. One bonus is that it is now a city in a democracy and not an occupied territory held down by a fascist militia that made the R.U.C look like Dixon of Dock Green.
However one problem may well be the conduct of the Guardia Civil? who have been known to instigate violence on visiting fans as some posters on this site have described.
This is no way an attempt to whitewash violent and reprehensible conduct from Rangers supporters I always have and always will condem that sort of conduct with Barcelona being the only exception where the local so called cops were just as bad and just as ready to start a fight as the moronic element of the fans.

I dont think our passing is on a par with last seasons destruction of Benfica or the previous seasons destruction of Rangers early on in the season.

Donati has still quite a few passes going astray and I think it´s been nigh on 20 months now since I have seen Zurawski fed in properly.

I see that Scott Mac Donald came off with a pulled hamstring. I hope his injury record is better than Miller, Zurawski and JVOH´s who all have an appalling injury record.

St. Mirren are lucky to have Gretna in the SPL.

I hope McDonald's hamstring is related to his inclusion in the Australia squad for an upcoming friendly in Melbourne.

    Edward,

Like I say, I admire your optimism, but I really think Barca are on a different planet.

I was in the Nou Camp for our last game there, and it was an absolute miracle that we got away with a point. They are fast, powerful, skillful, and disciplined. They also have two of the best forward players on the planet playing for them (three if Eto'o is back- in fact four if you count Messi).

I think Barca are one of the teams to whom playing away from home means little disadvantage. I will be stunned if your two games against them result in anything less than two comprehensive defeats.

Regarding Scott Brown and who is he like.

I posted last week after watching B.Munich v Hannover that Franck Ribéry and SB are out of the same mould.

Watch France v Eck's Fecks and make up your own minds.

BTW, it's all right being gallus, but Brown's attempts to humiliate a fellow professional was tasteless and conduct unbecoming a Celtic player, unless of course it is one of the deserving thugs at Ibrox.

    I stand corrected.

Sorry but I don't keep fully up to date with awards ceremonies on the South Side. Perhaps you can enlighten me as to who the Greatest Ever Rangers Player was?

As for the term "hun", as long as I can remember, and I'm a wee bit younger than you, that term has been used to describe your team, and at the time of the award to Mr Greig in 1999 was in common use to describe your team.

And whilst you correctly advise John Greig was the greatest ever Ranger , was this not for his "talent" on the pitch rather than his career as a manager ?

  • At 03/09/07 15:11, EdwardUrsus said…

WeeRon :- We did have and Mr Grieg got the vote. As to the greatest ever Rangers team I could really only give choiced from the 70s onwards and even at that would have to think about it for a while.
If however you mean the greatest team that actually played together then I would have to go for - Dickie, Smith, Crawford, Gibson, Neill, Mitchell, Campbell, MacPherson, Hamilton, Miller, Smith. Simply for the reason that they created a record that can never be beaten and can only be matched, as far as I know the record still stands. (winning every league game)

Danny, surely given the chance, McDonald would do anything he could to play in his home city (Melbourne)? Especially against a quality side like Argentina.

The game's on Tuesday next week (evening kickoff would be Tuesday lunchtime here), so he could be back in Glasgow by Thursday afternoon. Not ideal preparation for the ICT game, mind, but it could be worse...

Your opinion yes, but the objectivity of it is very much questionable
Its commendable that u have such a high view but if u think scott brown would get in the chelsea team ahead of mikel or essien then you are blind

Blind faith or blind to players abilities I don't know

Lets not forget the calibre of players brown is playing against, in the CL against spartak he was nowhere near as dominant

Your basically saying brown is one of the best midfielders in the world, yet he was at hibs a few months ago and nobody was saying that

Sorry mate not trying to slate you but frankly what your saying is laughable

  • At 03/09/07 15:18, EdwardUrsus said…

Cardiffbhoy :- I wouldn't like to guess who the best player ever at Ibrox was there are too many criteria without one outstanding player. On your second point, like you on the first one I stand corrected, you are correct that the term was used for Rangers fans when the award was given. The award was given for more than performance on the pitch it was given in recognition of his work and commitment to the club over the years as player, captain and manager. To be fair to Mr Grieg he was never just the clogger that many people think and had a good football brain and a fantastic passing ability.

    Matt,

I still like to see Scotland qualify for the major tournaments which means a fit Kenny Miller is needed.

If Mac Donald is called up he should go. It´s better for us long term and it´s better for him. I wonder if Killen will also start to make those long trips. We could have Nakamura, Killen and Mac Donald involved in long haul flights due to international duty.

Scott Brown gallus? And why not?

Seem to remember that both parties were involved in the verbals. Brown then went on to 'humiliate' with the ball, to which there were more verbals and then the shove.

That's really an admission that you've lost the arguement. In my book a wee shove means very little when the ball's not in play. It doesn't indicate violent conduct in itself. One of my favourite moments is Di Canio shoving tht ref in England who must be guilty of the longest dive ever to get a man sent off!

So what did the ref say to Scottie aftre booking the good buddie?? Gonnae no dae that wee man....

The term'Hun'as an affectionate shorthand[?]for a supporter of a rival team first came into common usage in Scotland after WW1,and was not restricted to those who had wandered furthest from the True Path.

For some reason it has now become exclusive to the plucky cashstrapped southsiders.

As far as I know it was never used in England to the same extent,if at all.

...if your lot behave themselves, then they will have no problems with the Catalan police...we've been twice in recent years and had a ball...that said we didn't bring an antagonistic legacy of having trashed parts of the city previously and a couple of uefa sanctions for abusing the head of the local faith....

...i would advise time spent enjoying the architectural and culinary delights, there are loads and the catalans are very proud of both aspects of the city.....getting tanked up in a square somewhere and upsetting the locals doesn't seem the best way to visit Barcelona...

I played for a team managed by a guy who was in the same school team as Jim McCalliog, so you must know him, big Tam Gallagher, already retired from international banking and living well in Madrid.

    Was that the same team?

Funny thing is, I can't remember Tam talking about Harry Hood or Denis Conaghan, which seems strange as he (Tam) is a Celtic man.

I think is by far a better player than mikel

and as i said i would rather have him than essien as i think he offers more, certainly i think he is a better goalscorer

Brown few appearances for scotland he has been sensational, so he has not just done it for hibs or celtic, his performance against italy was outstanding and proved he can compete on that stage

Sure he has only played 1 game in CL, fair point

But at this stage, and from what i have seen, the only midfielder i would swap him for is Gerrard, and he is injured the noo!!!!!

so if that makes him, THE on form midfielder in britain then so be it!

As for anyone saying that his gallus nature and him rippin the p out of st mirren, to say this is not becoming of a celtic player is absolute nonsense

wee jinky wud beat a guy 4 and 5 times

CF. I'll answer for Timoot as he takes a little bit longer than before to put the big words to-gether:-)

The great Holyrood team which went on to lift the Scottish Cup at Hampden consisted of mostly 17/18 year olds. Jim McAlliog was only 14 or 15 at the time but he was so good that he was picked and maybe Tom Gallagher was of a similar age and therefore Timoot may not have come across him. Having said that he might well as he repeated quite a few years!!).

    Oh! I am enjoying this.

One other little thing about that game, was that Harry Hood was picked to play in it but some clipe informed the Scottish Schools FA that Harry had played for an amateur team and was therefore banned. He had also been picked to represent Scotland but the ban took in that game as well. This was all related to me by the same H.H.a few weeks ago in a pub in St Andrews.
