McDonald, McGeady and Donati should shine in Dundee

I don’t know who it was said that in football you are only ever three defeats away from a crisis, but it should come as no surprise that Gordon Strachan does not want to disrupt the teams rhythm by resting players ahead of tonight’s encounter with Dundee in the CIS Cup.

This is an awkward fixture which will offer Celtic little reward for a victory and compounded trauma if the night ends in disappointment. Dundee are doing well in the First Division, and as possibly the tallest team ever assembled in Scottish football are likely to offer Celtic an interesting challenge, but Celtic’s appetite for the first whistle should be absolute.

If you are a Celtic player fortunate enough to be given a start, the game offers the chance to exorcise a few demons, score a few goals and get back to winning ways.

It is an occasion for Scott McDonald, Aiden McGeady and Massimo Donati to play the kind of football that has already marked them out this season.

Apologies if I have missed a direct question since yesterday, been busy.

PJBhoynyc, from previous article. No, I don’t regret the timing of when the research was published, I would not do so before a Rangers game (when I have sat no a story in the past), or a Champions League game, so this is as good a time as any.

You have to call it as you see it, even if you normally see it one way, but then observe something different. By highlighting the ‘record’ I really want to see some work put into correcting things.

When you shout something along the lines of “must do better”, if the message is to get through you have to be precise and balanced in your criticism, which is much better than shouting “wolf” every time we drop points.

This message has gotten through and I expect a change in form to follow.

Me and the youngest of the Lemonettes are the proud recipients, this season, of a family package season double in the 'old Rangers End' as I insist on calling it to her emabarassment.

For the ICT game we came a different route up from Ayrshire, up the '74 and off at London Road ( much quicker and easier for 'our' end, btw).

Saw a very interseting wee house on the London Road, just over from the Bowling Green and Barrowfield, bedecked in arty stuff and intersting murals.

I was pointing out James Connolly and Che Guevara to my offspring and boring her rigid with learned discourse as we passed.

Paul telling article pointing out three players who are potentially class acts and match winners who occasionally flatter to deceive.

MCgeady I am a great fan of but he must develop the knack of the final ball and when to distribute it.

Donatie needs to wear a watch to remember the game lasts 90 minutes and more effort is required.

McDonald has the movement and pace and centre of gravity of a potential Gerd muller. He just needs the confidence that a couple of goals will bring.

If this happens great players if not great potential with flaws.

In fact when you think of it a telling metaphor for the current team 3.

Anyway last meeting is at 4 so no time to get to the game so anyone going have fun.

"We have won two titles in the last three years, one with six weeks to go, one with four weeks to go.

"We have qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time ever. We played the winners of the tournament and went for 90 minutes without conceding a goal.

"Plus, the object of the game is to score more goals than your opponents. In my first season we had scored 17 goals by this stage. In my second season it was 12. So far this season we have got 24 for.

"Against us in these seasons we have had eight, five and six. If you take away Artur's howlers against Hibs on Sunday we would only have conceded four.

"In these three seasons, at this stage in the season, we have had 16 points, 16 points and 16 points. I have to say, I quite like my stats."

The Newcastle v West Ham game was much the same. (btw would swap Jan the player for Viduka the player in a flash!)

Finally got a chance to see the Hibs game, sorry to drag you guys back to it.

There was a lot of Naylor knocking going on in the last thread and it just seems strange that a player considered for the POY last year should suddenly be so poor (or has he just taken on Mr. Telfers mantle?), maybe his lack of confidence is not with himself but with the player directly in front of him.
Naylor repeatedly had to handle a number of attackers on his own due to Aiden either being caught out of position or standing on the halfway line watching, this might also explain his eagerness to get in the early cross - because he knows that if he goes to the line NO ONE'S HOME!
I'm an Aiden fan I'm just not sure if he's playing in the right position (it has nothing to do with "he's a young lad learning").

    Tin hat on.

    Oreganbhoy,

Are you suggesting that Lee Naylor plays the game in constant fear of his positioning and his absent minded left handed partner leaving him exposed ?

His misplaced forward passes are because he refuses to move up the field and his crossing is overhit because all he can think about is turning and running back to his position ?

I agree that there is a link at times with Aiden's decision-making leaving him (and us) exposed to the counter-attack but the problems with Lee are much more endemic than that at the moment. Hope he pulls through.

Personally, for all his breakdowns going forward at times I think Aiden's defensive game has improved this season. He needs to up the ratio on final balls and goals.

Didn't see the game myself so how did Boruc do and what impact do you think it had on Lee's performance ?

    :)

Whilst this is a good repost in a debating sense, it doesn't escape the fact that our defending could be improved and that some clean sheets are both desirable and necessary.

Whilst in the cut and thrust of the unequal SPL we should in general be able to handle losing one and perhaps two goals and still win, that level of defensive performance in Europe is sadly heavily punished. It is also likely to be punished at Mordor.

Our shared objectives of GOD need good defending as well as good attacking. My take this season is that I'm really happy with how we are going forward and attacking, however we need to find a reliable defensive form that goes with this and the current one just isn't it.

Ignoring problems tends to lead to breakdown. Tackling them early tends to keep the show on the road.

    Dumbhoy,

You'll get no argument from me on that. I got fooled by the Milan performance last year that we'd turned a corner in mature away performances but Donetsk was a return to the bad old days it seemed.

I think we did try and upgrade the back line but couldn't in the summer (N'Daw at right back), we held Mick up as a star after his Scotland performance and hoped we get the early version of Naylor back. I suspect the debate about buying our way out 'affordably' v. nurturing our existing talent is raging down celtic way.

I predict that a 10-game clean sheet run starts tonight, and that in 3 months time we'll be asking who should partner 26 goal Scott McDonald up front.

Naylor has been singled out unfairly in my book. He has consistently played through the pain barrier whilst carrying injuries and is in need of a break. Unfortunately we have no replacement, which is hardly his fault, and so he plays on with performances that he probably isn't happy with either.

O'Dea is for me the best defender on our books but not getting a game. He reads the play very well and shapes accordingly. He's clearly, as another left footer, having to sit second best to McManus who is being given his head at present. No manager would play McManus and O'Dea together because they are both left footed so it's one or other. Interesting that many managers wouldn't think twice about playing two right footers together?

Anyway, I'm available should Gordon decide he needs a new defensive coach ;-)

    Lee Naylor

I remember when he signed up last season and he was being interviewed on Celtic TV, he looked and sounded like a lottery winner, could hardly believe his good fortune. He then of course went on to play a blinder for the most part of last season, this season however…..

Could it be that during the close season the full weight of expectations that are on his shoulders week in week out playing for Celtic has finally dawned on him?

Regardless of his form, he has gone from looking like a man who has won the lottery to looking like a man who has just had his house re-possessed by the mortgage lenders.

Celtic have an awful tendency to make hard work of playing these kind of teams by getting involved in a kick and rush scrap instead of passing them off the park. Keep the ball on the deck and run their little legs off and we will win no problem.

    My dear friend, TheBhoyDave....

Do you know why Kaka is so, so, sublime?

    Because...

Well, I guess...to be fair.... a little back and filling, is required at this juncture.

A few submissions ago, I expounded at some length.. on how the art of scoring... or...if you will..

Creating! ....Goals... was not such a gargantuan task, AS the Present Celtic Team are making of it.

One of my solutions towards..well... SOLVING ,this imagined Riddle, was...

THE OLE WANDERING... CENTER FORWARD TRICK!

    Strike a CHORD? De DAH!!

The Center Forward, in my exposition, was a far different animal....pardon my French... from Mr.Strachan's et al, idea of one.

The Center FORWARD should Be a SPUTNICK... a LITTLE WANDERING STAR... who....
    Well!

WANDERS! WANDERS! MEANDERS!....Even, has been known...
TAE TAK A WEE DONNER... occasionally, occasionally!

To what end?, you may ask...

    So ask!

    O.K.

    Ye twisted ma Airm!

The purpose, my deah,Watson... is to
DRAW OPEN THE DEFENSIVE CURTAIN OF THE OPPOSITION!

    There!

    In A WOID....His ACTIONS

    ARE, POSITIVELY ....

JUST FULL OF PERIPATETIC TENDENCIES!( That's mair than wan woid!...ed)(Jist Checking, tae see if ye were peying attention...)

    Now back to Maverick!

Kaka is the Personification of the GYPSY CENTER FORWARD.. who I have just described.

    What does he really do,do?

He uses the whole PARK.. He is liable to show up... standing on the CENTER LINE..if he does....

DOES DAT NOT TELL YOU SOMETHING...

    Larsson?

    Same DEMEANOUR!

Now ,you can return to viewing your game...

    And get back to me..

    And tell mE ....

    "YOU'RE WRANG ... ABOOT...
KAKA!"... Or " YER RICHT ABOOT, KAKA!"

    Makes no difference to me...

I KNOW THAT I AM RIGHT!
