Preparation time limited before Celtic travel to Donetsk

Big games come thick and fast in the autumn. Celtic’s next game, at home to Inverness Caledonian Thistle on the 15 September, is only three days before they play Shakhtar in Donetsk.

Shakhtar beat Ukrainian club Arsenal 4-1 on Saturday, which makes it seven wins and a draw after eight games. They have a local derby against Metalurh before facing Celtic.

Benfica, who are also hitting form, had a resounding 0-3 away win over Nacional on Sunday and play a comfortable looking home game before travelling to Milan.

Milan needed a penalty at the San Siro to draw 1-1 with Fiorentina. They have a short trip to Siena two days before facing Benfica, a game I hope Milan win comfortably.

With players away on international duty, little real work will be done before the first group match. A point in Ukraine would be a huge achievement for Celtic, though no more difficult a result that the recent 1-1 draw in Moscow.

A point in the Ukraine would be a brilliant start to the group.

A tough target, but gettable if we play to our potential. They may be over-confident and we can use that to our advantage.

A point in Donetsk is what I am hoping for, would be a great start to the group.

A Milan win at home would also suit us nicely, think we might have to go 4-5-1 for this game as they will be dangerous at home if the last game in anything to go by.

I would go with McDonald on his own up front supported by Hartley playing in the hole.

McDonald has the touch and ability to hold players off if the ball is given to feet and can give and go.

Big jan needs a reality check and a wee break may do him some good.

Speaking as a minority of one, I think that JVoH is bubbling along nicely. I detect a steady improvement by the game.

He is always sniffing around the six yard box whenever a chance crops up and I feel he will pick up a lop of tap-ins this season.

If asked why I believe this, I would suggest that he is coming to terms with a new striking partner and more significantly, a different and better quality of midfield service.

Once we sort out the wide delivery, he will be flying. Let's be patient.

BTW, I see that Derek Riordan is only claiming two assists on Sunday.

I reckon he should include the corner for Jan's goal as well as the deflection and the inch perfect, flying volleyed pass to Mick.

the JVoH dilemma - maybe its the way we are playing. Perhaps he is not so used to such a reliance on his position to create chances - you know, either the intricate football that requires his input in the build up play, or the long ball option whereby he is the target man to flick on/bring down and start a move. I'm not sure what how he played at Feyenoord. Certainly, if it was focused on being in the right place at the right time to hit the target, you can see why he might be out of sorts with the present system. WGS expects and demands supreme effort every game. I think he could do with a week's break in the sun, recharge, to think about his game. In my opinion, Killen will be more than up to the task of replacing him - he's big, physically stronger than JVoH and has shown before injury that he knows where the net is.

Shakhtar will think that it's a guaranteed 3 points in the bag, after they tanked Celtic 3-0 on our last visit to Donetsk. But I believe that they are probably a little less strong now than then, and we are most definitely more of a handful.

I suspect, and hope, that the Ukrainians are in for a shock, and I expect Celtic to register their first ever away CL victory. It will certainly be needed, as I fearthat we will do well to even get a point off AC Milan, home or away.

Thus, if we are to qualify for the last 16, a win in Ukraine and a point in Portugal, along with home wins over both Shakhtar and Benfica, is the minimum requirement.

Alas, once again it's that old dilemma... do we want one more round of CL football, or should we hope for the chance to rack up a few more coefficient points by dropping into, then sailing through to the latter stages of the UEFA Cup?

Or maybe, just maybe, with a lot of luck and some pre-match hallucinogens, we could go all the way back to Moscow...?!

There is a lot of money sloshing around Ukrainian football just now;they have spent £15M on improving their squad so I expect them to be at least as good as the last time they played us.

baring in mind that my comments about brown being 2nd only to Gerrard were MY opinion

I may indeed be wrong but thats what i believe! sure i may have the green specs on but in 15 years of watching celtic home and away i think the boy is amazing.

while i agree essien is outstanding
on current form i wud take brown
for his goalscoring ability and also his tricks and overall cheek

I would pay more to watch brown than I would essien

just because he plays in scotland doesnt mean he cannot be the best.

I would agree though that he certainly needs to prove himself on the big stage, although he has done that the last few games with scotland (Italy and Georgia) and will hopefully continue to do so.

sure we can review him better after the rest of the CL games

but up til now, i think he has been outstanding, and is amazing to watch as he can do everything, absolutely everything.

a wish we had drawn chelsea now to see a FULL square go between brown and essien!!!!!!

I totally respect ur opinion though and would hope that you would mine, based on what i have said, even if u disagree 100%!!!!

    Strachan speaks:

"You have to remember we did our main work early, and there was never a stage as the window was about to close where we were going to panic. I was comfortable with that.

"We always had a feeling two or three players would go, so there was no panic about that, either.

"We were well covered for anything that might happen."

"I'm all right. Most of us would like one or two players in just to cover you.

"But this has happened before, when I first came here, and through that we got Maloney and McManus through to the first team, and look how well they have done.

"There are definitely kids here who will have to come to the fore, if we need them."

What most Celtic fans want to know is, has the manager identified a full-back among these wannabees?

Given that cover for Mark Wilson and Lee Naylor has long-since been identified as a problem for the side, why was this not treated as a priority?

Strachan's answer is immediate. "You can't get it," he said, almost challenging you to provide examples to prove him wrong.

"The type of cover we are looking for, everyone is asking huge amounts of money.

"Then you have to say to them, we've two excellent full-backs here, do you want to come along and wait until they drop out of the team?

"So, it's very hard just to get players in."

"We've got Jo Doumbe back, so we are okay,"

"He can do that job, and Willo can play at left-back if Nayls had a problem. So, I'm not really that worried."

"We have to make sure we give them as much rest as we can.

"Willo is already resting more. Nayls will need to be rested more, too, and that is what is going to happen this week."

"There would be arguments for and against both scenarios.

"It would be nice to get them back for the whole week after they had played their second international so you could see them resting and you could have time to work with them again.

"But if they were going from Sunday's game at Love Street to an international on Wednesday, you might increase the chance of them picking up an injury.

"So, would it not be better, from a club manager's point of view, if they were allowed to rest before they play the two internationals?

"It's hard to say. I can only hope they all come back safe and sound."

I would not write Shakhtar off, they are a rich club who have invested a lot of money against this summer. They have lost Matuzalem who destroyed us in the last game over there, but they have bought a fantastic player in Nery Castillo, a wonderful Mexican attacking player, for around 20 million euros. The defence will need to be alert all game as he will snap at their heels for 90 minutes without tiring.

Not to mention Cristiano Lucarelli up front, who although 32, has scored 92 goals in 146 appearances for Livorno before moving to Shaktar this summer.

I see where many of you are coming from in terms of playing Milan in round 6 and hopefully it doesn't mean much to them but I doubt if Milan hold that mentality.

If i remember correctly we all hoped that would happen in round 6 of the CL three years ago when Barca and Milan had already qualified and they played Shaktar and us respectively.

Barca basically couldn't be bothered with the long trip to a chilly Ukraine in early December and got murdered and we thought Milan might have the same lackadaisical attitude on visiting Glasgow.

No such luck they played the Italian way and made sure they didn't lose even though nothing was at stake for them.

Barca and Milan went through, Shaktar got the UEFA Cup and we had a quiet spring.

Not sure we could count on Milan ever taking their eye off the ball.

I agree. Your ex-player seems to need little or no motivation to get himself up for a game when the green and white hoops arrive.

However the point many of the guys are making is that Ancelotti might rest some players as they play Juve a couiple of days before playing us and then going off to Japan for the World Championship game.

Its a good bet that Gattusso might be one of those rested players but where I am coming from is that regardless of how meaningful the game may or may not be to Milan they have a mentality that refuses to take it easy simply because they have already qualified.

I am sure that goes through their first team and any reserves they may bring in if some of the first team are being rested.

On the other hand it might just be possible that the game means nothing to us as we have already qualified (as round 6 proved last year) and it is Milan who are needing a win to secure their on-going participation.

That's what happenned last year when in round 6 we were playing for little in Denmark (and it showed in our performance) and Man Utd were having to beat Benfica to go onwards.

NO-ONE possibly forseen that scenario when round 1 started last September so strange things happen.

At least this time when we get through to the last 16 we won't be playing Milan!!!!

Looking at the way the draw has panned out, realistically our best hope is to go to Milan having already qualified. To do this we need to take at least two points from our two away games (either a win or two draws then) and take at least six (preferably seven) from our three home games.

I think the draw has the potential to work out really well for us with the only proviso being that I'd rather face Benfica in Glasgow before travelling to Lisbon. A result in Donetsk would allow us to approach the home Milan game with freedom.

I think I'm also right in saying that our game against Milan will take place a week before all other groups as they are off to play in the World Club Championships.

Yes,the trick will be facing Milan and not having to worry[!]about the result.ACM nearly always get the result they want;they will want to take at least a point from the game at CP,and will plan accordingly.

A result on the banks of the Don would really upset the applecart as far as the group is concerned.
I think there will be posters on BQN and SQN thinking-SD v Celtic, home win.

Ach, I don't know. I was kind of glad there was no red card.

If Scott Brown had done what Miranda did, I'd have been disappointed in him. I'd far rather he made an eejit of the guy with the football, which is what he did.

Kenny Clark would probably have given Scott Brown a yellow card too, but, conceding your point, there would then have been a brouhaha to turn it into a retrospective red at the start of the week.

It's blindlemonchitlin' who told me your man Kenny was a Tim. I don't know the guy from Adam (Kenny, I mean. Blindlemon is well known to me).

I've always thought Clark was trying too hard not to be seen to be a Celtic fan, but I remember the day we lost to Clyde that there were guys on here saying Kenny Clark was favouring us (over a penalty decision?) and that it was embarrassing.

We would be embarrassed if the ref favoured us. We wouldn't know how to handle it.

For Rangers, it's a sign that Beelzebub is in his Hades and all is well. It's the natural blue order of things. It's how things should be.

They are the people after all.

By the way, I returned to the old college on Friday evening, now turned into a very holy retreat centre. They let me walk through the grounds with two of my weans.

After I pointed to a wee shed and told them we had kept two pigs in it, there was no turning their attention back to the appearance in the building of the Sacred Heart. No way.

Collie, Shakhtar were an excellent football team last wee seen of them, though they have lost their Tymo, who will be difficult to replace.

A defeat in Donetsk would not be the end of the world, indeed, the ‘back three’ games look like producing most points, but a point or three in Donetsk would be a blow to both Shakhtar and Benfica.

Tom the Tim, a far from satisfactory situation, though hopefully Milan will be able to rest players for the tourney ahead.

Shamrock Diary 14.43 Milan were going for ist place that season you refer to, although they had qualified they still wanted pole position above Barcelona.

Last season there was no danger of Milan losing pole position going into the last game and they duly lost 2-0 to Lille in the San Siro.

I should have clarified my point to the extent that if Milan are qualified and in no danger of losing first place they will field a weaker side.

Collie :- If you ever want to start a petition to end internationals you will have nome de plume on the list. They may have been more important in the past when their weren't so many club games or the financial side of things wasn't in the stratospheric realm it is just now but I feel they are now a huge risk for clubs. I would say there are two exceptions, those clubs at the bottom with no international players and those at the very top who have high quality internationals as back up. I would say both our clubs are a step down from that and the loss of one or two players injured while playing for a national team could change a season.
P.S I wonder if Zbyszek noticed that you infer from his name he is a Rangers man ;-)

Zbyszek :- You should be a politician with the spin you managed on that poll result :-)

Internationals are a bugbear for me too.

They once had their place, pre television, to bring the cream of talent to a ground near you.

Today, every top club is a mini International team and, with a few exceptions, are of a better class than National sides.

With the amount of money invested on these players by their clubs, it is a huge risk to lend those assets to Associations. Added to that, with so many of these games being friendlies, fans get short changed on many occasions.

My solution is for International matches to have an age limit, of perhaps twenty five, which will allow young players to showcase their talent.

After that age, players are usually at their peak and should be concentrating their efforts on the business of those clubs who have invested in them.

Of course, it will never happen.

TomTheTim :- While I would still prefer no internationals I think your idea of an age limit is a good compromise. I would still say though that associations should be forced to carry adequate insurence to cover both clubs and loss of earnings. A lot of young players are still on fairly low (in comparison) basics with a high percentage of money coming from bonus and appearance money, I think they should be compensated as well for loss of this.

Clubs come and go and are wholly dependent on capital, National Teams are the product of many centuries of warfare which makes matches betweemn neighbouring countries so appealing.

e.g. suppose Ronaldinho wishes to transfer to East Fife, should he be denied the right to play for Brazil if both player and country wish it so even if he is over 25.

Keen students of the media and reporting may want to compare and contrast the approach of Raman Bhardwaj in Scotland Today when reporting the allegations into Motherwell fans' racism and Hearts fans' sectarianism and the report several week ago of unfounded allegations regarding the Celtic support. You'd have to conclude that either Bhardwaj is himself discriminatory in his reporting and presenting or is now bricking it after getting it so badly wrong last time. The tut-tut look on his face was right and fitting with the nature of the report, compared to his bombast and 'ya beauty' of his Celtic report. And none of the 'STV understand this is true' tonight - more mibbees, mibbees naw, in fact it's highly unlikely etc. Indeed, on the stv.tv website, the report into last night's events comes from PA sport, not an STV reporter. Running a bit scared, old STV. It may also suggest they are two-faced.
