Quality in store enough for Celtic at Dens

In my match preview I said that there was little reward on offer for Celtic against Dundee last night and so it proved, but despite an excellent performance by the First Division side, quality won out in the end.

Scott McDonald, the smallest man on the park, scored with a fine header after Derek Riordan found him with a free kick from the wing. The Australian has been Celtic’s best player so far this season; his composure in the opposition box has been very productive for Celtic, as it was when he collected a superb reverse-pass from Gary Caldwell and cut back for Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to put Celtic two up.

Derek Riordan won a then under-hit a penalty, which was saved by Dundee keeper Samson. He scored an important penalty against Spartak, so we should cut him some slack.

Dundee had their chances. They hit the cross-bar and the post, and forced several saves from Artur Boruc. Boruc was aggrieved at being pushed at the Dundee goal, but he made the decision to come for a ball which on reflection looked ambitious.

The most important thing when you play away to an undefeated team who are full of confidence - and near the top of the First Division - is to win the game. Although Celtic wobbled for parts of the evening, they got the result.

After a rough week of Champions League and SPL travels/travails this was a good away win.

I don't think so. I think another spell in the reserves is exactly what he needs.

He is talented but he needs to cut out the smart-alec penalties (who does he think he is, Van Basten?)and moaning (both on-field and in the papers).

Your two in a row is a confirmation of the past. Your third in a row will be good omen for a current season.

Well said Paul about ambitious decision that Boruc made before the goal. That reminds me first half of his first season in Glasgow. I know, that in Poland 90 percent of the referees would give a free kick for a foul on Artur. In that small keepers area, the goalies are almost untouchable. Dundee striker was not interested in a ball. He was there only to make Artur's action impossible. I don't think it was a fair play from them.

A couple of points from last night.

I thought Lee did okay, honestly I did. I had only one pint of Guinness all night and was in before The Huddle which I always thought was something of a myth/legend/Northern Lights/Comet type thing.

I was amazed at the great turn-out of Celtic supporters. They gave the team (especially Artur) great backing.

    Brines - a dog's penis.

Gary - not for me at right-back I'm afraid. As in - I'm afraid.

Evander - I can see why (most) fans get frustrated by The Frostmeister but I still believe there's something worth cajoling there.

Artur - some gilding of the lily to disguise a nervy night imho.

Scott - tireless performance against the Angus Goliaths.

Jan - in the words of the late great Arthur Lee : "I Do Wonder". He also may have helped Derek miss the penalty. However Jan should have taken it imho.

More as it comes to me but we've a few good anniversaries and a couple of Vincents to cover.

Missed the cut with my last post so I hope you don't mind a repeat!

As one who stuck up for wee Skippy when nearly everyone was claiming he was not good enough for the CL let me add my tuppence worth about Lee Naylor.

Yes, he has had his problems but last night he had one of his best games of the season. He ran his heart out, put in some good crosses and defended well, despite having little or no support on many occasions.

On Saturday let's applaud some of the good plays he makes instead of forever looking for mistakes and I am certain that given a little encouragement from the fans he will bounce back to his very best.

CQN is read by all knowledgeable supporters so why should we presume that it is not read by the players?

By all means criticize the team, where you feel it is warranted, but make it a constructive critique - without the vitriol.

Only by all of us pulling together can we hope to realize our dream of a winning Celtic team playing football the Glasgow Celtic way!

    Hail! Hail!

Jan was most reluctant to let Derek hit it but Derek gave him the 'Aw, come on. It wiz me that was broat doon' number. Jan did not appear confident in Derek's ability to convert it and this may have cast some doubt in Derek's mind. Believe there was a touch of the 'Ah tellt ye' in the thereafters.

After watching our "defence" last night I'm glad I don't get too many chances to see the game. Shocking barely describes it. Roll on January where, hopefully, Gordon will spend some of this fabled banked money...

Someone posted the other day he thinks the Hun will win the league cos they will conceed less, not cos they are better than us. I am left wondering if that won't indeed be the case come May 08.

It was the far side assistant who irked me, does anyone know who he was?

I couldn't agree more with those who have commented on the referee's performance last night. It was absolutely shocking. The completete epitomy,(please no comments about any incorrect spelling), of a homer!!! If the Dundee goalie had been pressed as Big Art was at their goal he would have given a foul! I could have hit impressive free kicks if I had been given the space the Dundee player had last night. At every free kick the wall must have been at least 12 yards from the ball.

I wish someone would tell,(the delusional), Gary Caldwell that he is not a footballer, that he is a defender!! The sooner he learns that lesson he could well become a decent Celtic player. He clearly thinks he is Franz Beckenbauer,(A cultured footballer from the black and white days for you ignorant youngsters out there!!) I don't think he hit an accurate long ball all game.

Derek Riordan will have to play a lot better if he is to impress me, never mind the manager. There did not seem to be a great spark about him last night, perhaps if he got a run in the team??

I am afraid I have just a little doubt about John Kennedy's future. At the moment in the air he is quite poor, on the ground okay better distributer of the ball than Caldwell, but when he is attacked he doesn't instill confidence in me. Most defintely he and McManus are not a good pairing. It seems there is not a great deal of confidence flowing between the two.

I hope he does improve and will be a Celtic player in the long term. I do so, for himself and what he has gone through, but also I like the notion of historical connections throughout the period of Celtic's existence. He being Jimmy Delaney's grandson carrying on the family connection with the club. That appeals to me.

Despite it not being the greatest performance I never felt that there was ever any danger of an upset.

Finally dear reader I was in charge of team selection I would always have a fit Bobo Balde in defence,(apologies for all those who have just choked on their Greggs lukewarm sausage rolls).

Finally finally, just a word on Lee Naylor. He played a bit better last night than he did on Sunday, I know that wouldn't be hard. Yes he has not being playing very well so far this season, but I completely agree with those have pointed out that he gets no help or support from Aiden McGeady.

He talks a good game, but fails to deliver on theose fine words we all read in print. Sinsuke Nakamura does a much more conciencious, (spellining alert!!!! job of support his full back. McGeady should take note.

I know I said finally finally, but I don't want end on a negative note so here. hopefully is a positive one.

Shaktar Donetsk did not win an away game in last year's champions league. I hope that gives you all warm comforting feeling.

    I'll be off now DEFINITELY!!

Agree that Lee Naylor had a better game last night than in recent games. Also sprung straight back up from Zemlik's assault in the first half.

And Brines once again proved, to anyone who cared to look, how poor a referee he is - probably been stated before but - he gives a foul against Evander when it is clearly a throw in to us. Evander never touched the guy. Said foul initiates the pressure directly before their goal.

Even Billy Dodds had to distance himself from a few statements made by Mitchell. Including for the pen -

M- Although it looks a soft one
BD - no, he clipped him it's a pen.
PM -- Or did maybe he clip himself and follow through into Riordan. Whatever the case I don't agree itis a soft penalty.

We spent only one whole day in Warsaw with Pablo. We made a walk around the city, the old town, parks and in the afternoon we did see Legia defeat. The rest of his time we spent in Krakow and Zakopane. I left Pablo alone for one day in Krakow. My city is okay after his visit. For my family and me it was a pleasure to meet him. I cannot say too much about Krakow. Nobody told about the riots in Krakow.
Seriously speaking I think we all enjoyed that time.

Itz: Excellent post on previous thread arguing for all shades of Celtic opinion to be tolerated on CQN not just those who feel it is their duty to defend the club- often without ever analysing whether the club is right or wrong.

Having read the jibes on here about posters like me being banished to Follow Follow and being compared to Keevins, frankly shows a level of intolerance that is alien to the Celtic way.

When you talk about "striving for excellence" it is something that I have always demanded from our board in my 50 years of supporting the club. The present board have largely done a good job, but, in my opinion, have fallen short with funding for top quality players this summer.

Because some fans will accept and settle for less somehow means that my views are largely unwelcome as far as some CQNers are concerned.

But those who would like to drive out dissenters should read Itz's words below carefully and decide whether they are actually upholding the ideals of the Celtic family which I believe has always espoused free speech.

"Ever thought of trying another forum, follow follow maybe?

"Celtic, like every other football club up and down the country, has supporters who like a good moan and a good whinge from time to time. Nothing wrong with that in my book, we're all different right?

"However to suggest that they should not be heard on here, that they should - as someone suggested earlier today - go away and support the fod, that’s plain crazy surely?. You have to remember guys that CQN is not the Celtic View, it reflects the true nature of our support, and obviously we are a fairly mixed bunch.

"Celtic Football Club is for people who want to support a football club that strives for excellence in Scotland and in Europe, is proud of its history, supportive of its local community and seeks to support the following aims: “To maximise all opportunities to disassociate the Club from sectarianism and bigotry of any kind. To promote Celtic as a Club for all people, regardless of gender, age, religion, race or ability.”

"Strive for excellence - key phrase there - to achieve excellence maybe you need to look at things occasionally and then point out how you think it could be better. Surely we can tolerate that?"

    Great stuff, itz.

The reason Celtic came so near the bottom of the food stakes is not because of the quality of our pies but rather because whoever is in charge of our kitchens insists on boiing them!

Every home game you see a brown band down the side of ALL the pies where they have obviously been overheated.

The net result is that the gravy has evaporated and you are left with a dry hunk of pastry enclosing some rubberised meat!

Forget new players in the January window, I say, just sign up the Killie chef instead!

Off topic, but thought this was worth sharing...

A wee while ago I signed up for membership to "29", a members club in Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow. I wouldn't normally bother with such a place, but in the business I'm in it's handy to have a wee bolthole in the city, plus you can get a drink at 3 o'clock in the morning, should you wish.

Anyway. I got an email from 29 today. They are having a bit of a bash for the Rangers CL tie against Lyon next week. Fancy dinner, wee dod of champers, the game. Two special guests for the assembled Huns. One, Davie MacPherson "defender" during their 9-in-a-row fluke. The other, one Bobby Tait.

Bobby Tait. Where have you heard that name before? Ah yes, Ibrox, May 1998. Mr R. Tait, then a top-flight Scottish referee, is about to retire. He requests, allegedly, to be sent to the Death Star for his last game, a game which could go a long way to propelling Rangers to 10-in-a-row. You remember now?

How could you forget? Rangers, struggling at 0-0, are allowed 5 minutes of injury time by Tait. Hilariously, that day's opponents, Kille, use the time to break up the field and score a winner. Oh how we laughed.

But of course this was a serious matter. Had the SFA given in and awarded this vital game to a referee because he supported the club? No, came the indignant reply from on high, youse are all paranoid tims.

In the end, it was academic. We won the league. And usually I am not a paranoid sort- you make your own luck etc etc... But today's email really brought me up short. Clearly, Tait is a Rangers man. Clearly this is well known. It is impossible to believe it was not known in May 1998.

I am half tempted to go along, just to hear what Tait has to say to his friends. And I would really love to ask him how he felt at 4:55pm that day at Ibrox.

Because I remember exactly how I felt!

Don't want to start another songs debate but I was behind the goal last night at Dens, second away game this season. My first was Falkirk and the support was fantastic.

I'm not trying to start an 'IRA or no IRA' debate but please for the love of the wee man can cut out the IRA add-ons in Willie Maley and that Celtic Symphony song - decent enough Celtic song, but why the hell does there have to be 'ooo aah up the RA on the end' - I know it's in the original version. I guess what I'm saying is Celtic song or IRA song, you decide. Don't put the two in the same song. There was none of this at Falkirk and I've only watched the other aways on telly and heard nothing of the sort. Real shame.

    * I know how I felt and where I was, I had just flown in on the Friday, May Day, as my mother had a stroke, it wasn't as bad as feared and that Saturday afternoon I left the Vale Hospital and wandered doon Alexandria, I approached a pub called the Pawn and noticed some lads listening to the game on a car radio, I wandered over and enquired of the score, 0-0 pal was the response, trying not to show my glee I murmered thanks, as the time marched on this lhad shouted "blow the whistle noo ya cheatin bassa", I then knew I was among Tims, just then Ally Mitchell ran up the park and we danced all around appropriately called Mitchell Street thinking the dreaded TIAR was over, that was until the next day and Wim the Tim almost blew it, I will always remember the Grim Reiper screaming at him tae get subs on. Thankfully our wee Ghod ensured it was all over the following Saturday,

The sooner he learns that lesson he could well become a decent Celtic player. He clearly thinks he is Franz Beckenbauer,(A cultured footballer from the black and white days for you ignorant youngsters out there!!) I don't think he hit an accurate long ball all game.

Are you sure about that Ragnar? Gary C is up there with Lee N in the scapegoat stakes these days, and I’m not sure I see why. His passing ability is constantly criticised, and I made a point of keeping an eye on it last night. He wasn’t perfect, certainly (none of our players were firing on all cylinders - though please recall that he was playing out of his usual position), but in the first half especially he pinged around half a dozen long, accurate balls down the right wing, perfectly into the stride of McDonald. His long-passing success rate was way better than 50/50, which is not a bad ratio. And let’s not forget his excellent reverse pass to Skippy for the second goal, which displayed the kind of touch and vision that really we’re paying Donati and Brown for!

I don't think so. I think another spell in the reserves is exactly what he needs.

He is talented but he needs to cut out the smart-alec penalties (who does he think he is, Van Basten?)and moaning (both on-field and in the papers).

TuttiFruttiTractionHoose, how will another spell in the reserves help Deek out? As for his penalty,i bet you were giving it yee-haa when he scored in the shoot-out against Spartak Moscow. Not every player scores them. The main thing was we won last night.

If JVoH wanted to take it then he should have done what Chris Sutton did when he told Henri Camara that if he wanted to take a penalty that we had won in a league match a few seasons back then he would have to take them in the big European games. Needless to say big Sutty was given the ball back.

Bobby Tait did indeed add 4 + minutes on in that game at Tynecastle in 1997/1998.

However, the Hearts goal, scored by Jose Quitongo I think was in fact the equaliser.

It seemed like a defeat at the time though!

Harald missed one of the all time great sitters right in front of the Celtic support that day.

Still, he atoned for his sin a few months later on that memorable day in May.

Politics aside, and even a wikipedia search would reveal some dodgy issues, his poointmentwould look like a political figurehead with no, as far as I can see, strategic core competency.

Can you imagine Wilson (if fit) or Doumbe (too small) at right back? That will be their major weapon, diagonal balls.

Having siad that, for Mordor, I'd have a back four of:

    Caldwell
    Balde
    O'Dea
McManus (left back (Naylor's back-up), only ever will be a left back, if he ever makes it, shades of Derek W(SH)yte!

And, before the McManus supporters start typing, I've been saying this ever since he clattered the advertising boards at Livi.

And, also, to reignite an earlier question. Name ONE world class left footed centre back?

I must confess that i do not know what credentials the board would consider paramount in appointing a chairman.

Clearly you would need a long envelope if you were to write to Mr Quinn although Mad Mitch insists that in spite of his distinguished career his accomplishments would be of little benefit to the chairman to a football club.At any rate his career was in high finance so it would appear that he was appointed to knock the financies of the club into a shape pleasing to Mr Desmond if not Mad Mitch

I think that the selection of MR Reid would be so divisive that I can only imagine he would only be appointed with a specific objective in mind.Since his career and academic qualifications are not in finance but in politics I can only imagine that he is seen as a person with the political clout to expedite our relocation to the EPL.

What really puzzles me is why Mr Reid would take on the task.I understand that the salary is not great and the article in the Guardian lists a number of his colleagues taking up money for old rope posts.Perhaps Mr Reid is guided by his love of the club or perhaps he will only be a figurehead?I look forward to hearing the views of our posters well versed in the wor;d of big business.

I wonder what the posts on here would have been like supposing this blog had been around just before Fergus McCann's Celtic revolution kicked in.

Would the Malcontents who won the day by rebelling against the old board and throwing their support behind Fergus have been seen as Mineshafters?

Would the pro board supporters - and their was plenty of them supporting their crazy plans to demolish Parkhead and move to Cambuslang - have been seen as Happyclappers?

One things for sure - the CQN blog would have been on fire - supposing it had been around.

I think that was the end of the end for the old board.(if not before..:-))

    Morning Itz,

Your note, along with that of Sean South's struck a chord with me this morning that there is a bit of a romantic notion within you two chaps at least that you lead some 'principled' crusade for an anti-establishment view.

Principled because you have decided to see all things as a perennial struggle of bad men in charge versus cloth capped honest to goodness celtic fan fighting to uncover a celtic parkgate conspiracy where Quinn, Desmond et all are sitting around the capitalist table counting our combined season ticket money and the magic beans we got for Shaun Maloney, cackling at the hoodwinking on summer signings they have gotten away with.

"Because some fans will accept and settle for less somehow means that my views are largely unwelcome"

"But those who would like to drive out dissenters"

When I read this tosh I had visions of a grown man sitting at his pc with a cape on, zorro-type mask and of course pants over his trews, writing as the music of Clannad played in the background, occasionally gazing at a stained photo of the toilets to the old jungle…..vowing to follow on the fight against tyranny regardless of the success of the team on the pitch…...

Come on fellas, you add to the rich tapestry of debate here and add massively to the site as much as anyone but can I ask that you take the chips off the shoulder. I think your constant need for a 'principled' anti-establishment stance undermines the ability to see the running of the club and its history as a complex mix of events and circumstances and with Sean in particular has just turned into diatribes of downright begrudging negativity.

The above is the views of the author and the names were not changed to protect the innocent.
    Sorry.

Sure it's all just a bit of fun at the end of the day :)

    Thank you for that information.

It certainly puts a different complexion on matters.

I knew from your previous postings that you had a particular concern about the appointment but that you wished to steer debate away from Mr Reid`s political affiliation.I now have a much clearer idea of your focus .

I am probably displaying (again) my naivete when I say that I am shocked at the motivation attributed to this appointment by the Telegraph.I would be most disappointed if,as this article implies, the appointment is made primarily to progress business deals unrelated to the club. However as Neg Anon says if it makes sense it makes sense.

In passing(and at the risk of ignoring your injunction on sideshows) I must say that I find deeply offensive the statement by the Telegraph that "It is thought incredible that a critic of terrorism would become a figurehead of the club" and "Mr Reid`s appointment would continue to give respectability to Celtic".
It puts in context Kitalba`s recent broadside at this rag.

I see the Hearts QF is on the Wednesday 31st and the other 3 games are on the Tuesday (30th). I assume therefore we are the televised match.

This does not suit at all. 31st is Halloween and you're not likely to get any kids wanting to give up one of the most fun nights of the year. The knock on is the faithers under pressure (well, me anyway) to take the weans round to the neighbours, grannies etc.

If the game is also on terrstrial telly the decision not to go becomes a bit easier (although fear not, I'll be there and hoping it's long forgotten by Father's day in June!) and finally when you through into the mix the amount of money we've already laid out on CL tickets over the same period I think it might be one of the most poorly attended matches against Hearts for a very long time.

It also puts Celtic in a bit of a quandary. Correct me if I'm wrong but we get 21 games on the season book: 19 league games and 2 others. We had the Parma game but the CL qualifier was box office and the board gambled on getting a home cup tie later in the year so they could charge for the sure-to-be sell out Spartak game.

Do they see the Hearts game as a money spinner and hope for lower league opposition in rounds 3, 4 or 5 at home in the Scottish Cup to give on the ticket, risk having to organise another friendly, or do they take cognisance of my first 3 paragraphs and make the Hearts game a freebie, which may boost the crowd but cost them more money as they have to split the notional gate money with the Swinecastlers.

    Damned if you do...

While its quiet on here, I'll admit to being selfish and say that its the contrasting views on Celtic from 2 camps diametrically opposed to one another that draw me to this site like a moth to a flame, I just find it really fascinating.

We all support the Celts apart from Teddy, and even him I'm not to sure about, he's definitely got a soft spot for us somehow, yet we all end up on here after a game firing off totally different views to one another on how we see things. As one poster once nailed it, the big mad mental Celtic supporters bus in Cybersapce. That’s us, and its great stuff.

Guys like Sean South and Big Wavy - you cant have one without the other IMO, they are both equally essential on here, combined they provide if you like the fuel that keeps the big mad mental bus on the move, IMO. Take away one or the other and eventually CQN will simply grind to a halt.

    druiddude,

I suspect that the tone of that Telegraph article will provide the fuel for those who would disapprove of such an appointment.

The second point made by the author about how such an appointment would "continue to give respectability to Celtic", would suggest that somehow the club would be lacking in same should the good doctor not be appointed.

In my book, there is no harm in having a senior, retired politician aligned with the club and he will be joining a former colleague, Brian Wilson, in the boardroom.

Will the same people who booed Brian Quinn also be against his successor?

Good to see you back.No doubt there are wheels within wheels in these high flying appointments.

I would hope that the post is filled purely on the basis of the canditate best equipped to serve the needs of the club.

Your first point has aroused in me the paranoid suspicion that maybe the Telegraph story is a spoiler...designed to arouse opposition because of it`s source.

In thinking on these matters I need to remind myself of Mungo`s mantra in Blazing saddles

" Mungo only pawn in game of life".

    druiddude,

Thanks for the welcome. I was actually just doing guard duty at Noel's clin.., er holiday complex to ensure he fulfilled the terms of his confine..., em, holiday booking.

Being long in the remaining teeth that I have, I have come to the conclusion that we have a Board who act on behalf of Celtic's best interests and I am happy to trust them on whatever appointments they see fit. I believe they have earned that right.

I don't have any agenda other than what is best for the club and I leave my politics at the Polling Station.

On the article in question, the second part is so tawdry and ill-informed as to cast doubt as to the veracity of the hypothesis in the first part.

Surely a directorship of the security company would be enough to prise Reid's little black address book from his grasp.

Let the battle commence, should the post be confirmed.

Interesting quote from Wilson which might explain why his form hasn't been too great so far this season.

He told the Evening Times: "I have had problems with it in the past and, to be honest, I have been plagued with it for a while. In that respect I wasn't doing myself or the team any favours by trying to play through it. It is definitely the right thing to try and get it sorted out now. At 23, I was only able to train two days a week and that just shouldn't be the case. So something had to be done."

    Citibhoy,

Thanks. Think it's no coincidence that both appointments announced at once. Ian Livingston I know previously in his bean counting days at BT and can vouch for his fanatical celtic supporting credentials...and his bean counting. Very good appointment.

The John Reid one is the worst kept secret in football chairmanship terms. I know, and fully respect, that people will have their views on his personal credentials as a past Government minister and I suspect the media will love the potential for a schism to be created within our ranks over it.

The role of the chairman to me seems statesmanlike and I have every faith he'll be an articulate spokesman for the club and hopefully our interests both within scotland and Europe. I won't build a rod for his back based on his past, and that's not to say I was a fan of the Government or his policy stance, but the slate is clean and I'll judge him going froward at the helm of this great club. I became aware years ago at a trade union conference that he was a fanatical celtic man and behind closed doors was less than diplimoatic about our friends from the south side :)

Not making any great 'must-have' point here but just my own thoughts on it.
