Strachan press conference, Champions League has best players in the world

Gordon Strachan started today’s media conference by reminding the room that Celtic were founded to help those in need, but was soon asked about the Champions League, the richest tournament of all. He was convincing when he assured us that Celtic do not have problems motivating themselves for prosaic league games before a Champions League encounter, “Just look at our record. Our results before and after Champions League games show we can handle it.

“As I keep saying to the players, my ambition is to win the league.”

Derek Riordan was equally unequivocal, “You try your hardest in every game.”

Of course, today could not pass without a word on the Scotland exploits in Paris, "It is tremendous and will only help the clubs [with players involved with Scotland].

“There is a spring in the step of the players who have come back, no sign of tiredness.”

His captain, Stephen McManus was described as “A learner. What a couple of years he has had, what a couple of weeks he has had.”

“Other people have talent but don’t enhance it like he does.”

We got an insight into what I am sure Gordon is telling the players about the Champions League, “This is the best tournament in the world. The best players in the world are here.”

Some of them wearing green and white.

Ahhh - real football!!!!! That was the best international break in a long time but it's just not the Celtic!!!!!

Thoughts turn to tomorrow, so many possible changes and options for the manager.

Realistically we could rest all the Scottish Internationalists (with the exception of Caldwell) however I suspect at least McManus will play.

    Could be:

    Boruc

    Wilson
    Caldwell
    O'Dea / McManus
    Naylor

    Riordan / McGeady
    Donati
    Hartley / Brown
    Nakamura

    JVofH
    Macdonald

Another 5 please and no goals in the battle of evil and darkness in reekie.

I think the international break probably came at the right time for Lee Naylor. He's been looking jaded, which is strange considering the season's just started, but it might have just been a wee niggly injury that needed a week's rest.

I think WGS will stick to the tried and tested, and players that were starting to gel before the International games.

Ok that said back to business.

We need a solid victory , no injuries and JVOH to knock in a confidence boosting double.

The rankers this weekend face their first game this season where they are not a shoo in to pick up 3 points.

Prediction - Hoops go top on goal difference at 5pm Saturday 15th September and NEVER are behind again this season.

    We shall not be ...etc.

DB...I usually enjoy your postings. This comment, however, has to be the most unfortunate thing I have ever read on this blog. To come out with this suggests to me that your understanding of what Celtic is all about is a not quite as peerless as it ought to be.

I would venture to say that the whole THING about Celtic is just that....you don't have to be a Catholic to 'get it'.

Of course, he 'got it'. That's what the club was designed to do. That's the difference between our club and others.

I am astonished and saddened that the very core of what Brother Walfrid started still escapes people who have had ample time to figure it out.

    Unfortunate indeed.

    Nakamura Brown Donati Riordan

    McDonald Vennegoor of Hesselink

Providing Celtic have no real injury doubts, then the team will very much pick itself

    Boruc

    Wilson McManus Caldwell Naylor

    Naka Brown Donati McGeady

    Jan VH McDonald

I doubt Strachan will make wholesale changes on the basis that we have a massive game midweek in the CL - he'll be looking to re-introduce the balance after most of the players in the squad were on International duty.

The only possible difference to the above lineup could be Deek for Aiden as he started in the last victory at Love Street

The facts are that he had a vital game coming up,the Club were asked for assistance and he gave it gladly. This is what he took the ethos of the club to be,and what I myself have always taken it to be.

I think we are both pushing against an open door here.

Get well soon Pressley. I thought there was something strange about his performances over the last few months. He looked uncomfortable and he wasn't his usual solid self in the tackle as well running pretty awkward. If the injury was the thing that has been affecting his form the last year then let's hope the surgery was a success and we have the player from a couple of seasons ago who was brilliant. I'm happy with our options already but I wouldn't complain about Elvis being back to his best.

Not forgetting Hartley started our last fixture in place of Nakamura I'd be tempted to play the Japanese Bhoy. I just love watching him at Celtic Park and think we'll get more out of resting him for away fixtures.

I'd be tempted to rest Brown, if anyone, or at least tell him to go easy on the raw meat tomorrow.

Bearing in mind that the visitors to the fortress tomorrow have yet to register a point this season I'm looking for a comfortable win.

WDH, whenever the Jinky fund is mentioned I always think on the tribute strips because I have been lucky enough to see behind the scenes at GtCC and what they did with them and the other work they do.

On a quiet Friday afternoon, and because they have been ‘teamed’ with CQN for a couple of years I thought I’d mention some interesting facts about GtCC.

They were formed in 1999 in response to the crisis on Kosovo. Religious bodies across Scotland tried to pool resources (Tim, Prod, Muslim, Jew) but ‘doctrinal issues’ made this very difficult. Rev Neil Galbraith had the idea to start an independent charity that would bridge this gap and respond immediately to the crisis with aid, and so they did. It was set up for 3 months only.

By Christmas, about 5 months in, Claire Short told Rev Neil that the work they had done was extraordinary, could not have been achieved on the ground by government for political reasons and they had to continue, and so they did.

Do any of you remember the wee girl from Kosovo, Liridona Halili. She had holes in her heart and was stranded. Too politically difficult to help just one child so no government in the world would touch it or take her in. The Rev Neil pulled out every stop. He contacted the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi who owned the HCI in Clydebank. He agreed to fund the op. The British military got her off the mountain, the Swedish military put her on a hovercraft and BP supplied a plane to take her to Glasgow. The HCI picked her up and operated successfully. Pretty incredible.

The organisation continued for almost 2 years when 9/11 happened and GtCC and their international contact were called on to support. This involved counselling to the bereaved largely.

The experience this brought meant they were developing contacts world wide and today they assist in Malawi, Northern Uganda, Sudan, Afghanistan, recently to Iraq among many more countries.

Roll forward to the Pakistan Earthquake and the Tsunami and GtCC were mobile and able enough to be among the very fist world agencies to respond.

It’s a 3 pronged attack. One is emergency aid. They are able to respond in incredible time because of the contacts they have with other aid agencies on the ground and at government level. Second is more important, development. Projects are researched so that they are sustainable. It’s all about local empowerment to help themselves, not throwing money or goods at uncoordinated, corrupt or wasteful recipients. Third is local, working with West of Scotland kids mostly, assisting underprivileged and spreading awareness to able kids through education projects and exchange programs.

One of the most incredible things is they do this with little or no money. It is all about making contacts, establishing relationships, getting gifts donated and coordinating volunteers. So much so they are now feeling the pressure of expectation a bit.

Anyway, back to more recent times and local issues.

See when Glasgow Airport was attacked? What do you think happens when 4,000 people have to be evacuated off of planes and out of an airport to be processed and roll called and debriefed? Well they go to the SECC and the government informs “COBRA”. The name is simply an acronym for one of the venues where it meets - Cabinet Office Briefing Room A.

The practicalities are that these 4,000 people are going to be in their holiday gear, no luggage, cold and will have children with them. COBRA responds…..by admitting they have no resources stocked and call Rev Neil Galbraith at GtCC who, by 6pm, was on site and had 12 volunteers back and forth in 2 vans bringing blankets, toiletries and essentials such as babies nappies to the SECC. They simply put their international action plan into practice in Glasgow.

First on the scene to bring foil blankets and aid to the distressed at the Stockline disaster was…GtCC.

Anyway, since it’s a quiet Friday and a lot of guys on CQN have donated in the past I thought a wee bit of background might be useful. Their worry at the minute is their reputation precedes them and expectations are great but they have no commercial backer. They have basic running costs and rely, believe it or not, on things like golf days. How crazy is that! (BTW, if there any guys out there with access to their firm’s decision makers on where to allocate the charity budget get in touch!!)

Little or nothing to do with McManus, Celtic, listing ships or Jock Stein, but I thought nobody would mind.

p.s. I have an idea for a CQN do in January, need to research it a bit, but if anyone knows of a hall we could get for free, not far from Celtic Park, with an early licence, a big screen, volunteer caterers, two dozen lapdancers, at least 3 Lisbon Lions, a book on copyright law and some weapons grade Plutonium then let me know. (Two of the items on the list are unnecessary.)

    Hail Hail

Celtic are not going to bother debiting their cards – just going to collect a pound from everyone on the flight!

Excuse me, this is so off topic as to have gone round and come back again. Gordon Brown 'entertaining' Thatcher? I mean, what's that all about?

Just a thought on the Maritimo one. Might not be a player. They have a bundle of Brazilians through the dual-passport thing and fan-bases throughout the world.. a tie-in for players possibly? Green and white away kit is a give-away giving this totally unsubstantiated guess of mine just a hint of a wee bit of a dod of truth.

My dear friend, TheGreenTrumpet. Hush! Don't spread this around...But... it wiz LENNON'S FAULT!

Sure, Kaka evaded Big Mick...at the latter...as Kaka was in full flight..and easily dodged Big Mick, who was static.

Howevvah....It wiz Lennon's Inept and Powder-Puff tackle...in mid-field..and his ( should not need to say this... that is, Lennon's... not Kaka's)subsequent slow, and ponderous, flailing recovery attempt...

that initiated the Ultimate TRAGEDY! I hasten to hastily, add....

This is My opinion, on the matter... in which I am most entitled!

    Kojo.
    Yer Pal.... for eternity.

hello Kojo, and sorry for the lateness in replying - I was away to my kip by 00.15. I know where you are coming from on this (and we're all entitled to our opinion, most certainly), but...

The post to which you replied was one I had hastily put together in defence of our current captain, Stephen McManus. The points I raised in defence of big Mick could also be applied to our former captain Neil Lennon. We could argue from now til Doomsday on who was at fault for the situation in question (and let's face it, we're Celtic fans, so we will!) I don't need to go back over your old posts to know that you were not the biggest fan of that particular footballer. But let's be charitable - now that he has left for Forest's new, can we not say: Neil Lennon captained us in the San Siro against the ultimate winners of the big cup, and you know what, but for a moment of brilliance from Kaka, we nearly had 'em.

GT, yer pal, right back atcha...

Always liked Edwyn, and Orange Juice, a lot. His bravery certainly did shine through. So many people go through what he did and don't make it, or are shadows of their former selves. To be able to record again is a phenomenal achievement - the last tune they played sounded quite haunting, a bit like 'Hurt'. More power to him, and to his wife.

Bloke 109 I sat and watched it with the cubs and trying to explain who he was when they showed his earlier stuff to now was interesting.

It brought back memories of the Cameron Sharpe and Morton Weighorst documentaries. Not only has he been through a lot but its when you watch things like this you realise how much the families go through as well.

My thoughts and prayers will be with them in future. Its good to see these type of programmes to get things into perspective at times.

Greenlion2: whilst appreciating the motives behind that link, I often wonder what good a multitude of identikit letters sent to an authority figure actually do (not just in this instance - on any 'political' issue).

In saying that, my opinion of Murray or Bain would rise a hundred-fold if they stamped down hard on this particular issue.

TheGreenTrumpet (im shortening yout to TGT if thats alright as my typing is crap)

Im involved in a campaign which has nothing to do with football at the moment and all of the politicians and adminastrators tell us that you need to get as many letters sent in.

We kinda (too long to explain) lost before and others won due to their letter and e-mail campaign. Politicians like letters and e-mails it feels like someone loves them.

As I said its not everyones cup of tea but its mine.

Collie.... I hear what you are saying BUT in todays age we have the best and worst tool ever given to man (not meant to be sexist) the internet.

You can contact so many people with 1 letter.

I can see why we as a club want it to die but it is now being brought up by a small number of twisted people and it has now grown arms and legs into it being on people making money from it.

As you know if there are bucks to be made then it will sell. Why dont we bring the debate into the open and let the bigots put their evidence in front of everyone so we can see the truth.

I for 1 would be quite happy being open about it.

All I ak for is to be treated the same as everyone else in my country. I am no angel and I dont expect anyone else to be but if someone is flinging about muck I expect them to back it up.

In recent times we have our goalkeeper abused for blessing himself, we have had radio stations proclaiming the lie, our ex captian bein gabused at every ground in Scotland for bein gan Irish Catholic and 1 of our best prospects bein gabused for chosing to play for another country but we do not hear that when Scotland paly English people or else when other player choose to play for other countries.

In conclusion you may choose to sit tight but you are over in the states im not and ive got cubs who I dont want to see treated the way I was.

    Rant over.
