Three points and a clean sheet a must against Hibs

I remember after losing five goals at Ibrox in 2000, Martin O’Neill spoke of how important it was that Celtic avoided defeat in the next game; away to Hibernian, as it happened.

Losing, just like winning, is contagious, and Celtic will have had their rhythm and confidence damaged by the trip to Donetsk. The journey to Easter Road on Sunday will not be easy; Hibs are on an unbeaten run which stretches back 12 games to the first weekend in May. They have been preparing for this match since Monday and considering Celtic’s European travels will expect a point – at least.

Returning from an away European fixture to an away domestic game is statistically the most likely time points will be dropped, so Celtic will have to dig deep.

It is vitally important that they retain their position at the top of the SPL, failure to do so will hand momentum back to the team who lost four goals against Edinburgh’s second team last weekend.

On paper Hibernian might not sound like the most difficult opposition Celtic will face this season, but this is a big game; three very important points.

I expect a reaction from Tuesday night, I expect three points and, surprisingly, I expect the first clean sheet in an away match in all competitions for 51 weeks. Celtic will not want to see this anniversary pass.

O’Neill declared himself satisfied with the point he took from Easter Road in 2000. I thought he was being generous at the time; less than three points on Sunday would leave me less than satisfied.

    Paul,

    The feeling I get from our team this season is that they can and will take bad results out on other teams.

    It's a big Sunday in front of us. And I was impressed by the Dons last night - lots of good and bad scenarios to unfold what with a hour's delay and all.

    Unfortunately etims are more than a bit late with the news. I posted the following from my source on the 10th or 11th of this month on CQN. etims are just about 10 days late - poor show. Talk about lazy journalism.

    Media Trio Fined for Contempt
    10/09/2007
    Both the Daily Record and Scottish Sun newspapers - along with stv - have each been fined £1750 for contempt of court, the first time the newspapers have been found guilty of such a charge in nine years and the first time ever for stv.

    It follows a court case, in May, involving Celtic footballer, Derek Riordan. During the trial, all three media outlets published a photograph of the player, who - along with another man - was facing assault and breach of the peace charges.

    However, in the opinion of Sheriff J. Douglas Allan, it was not a given that, even though the player was well-known, that the witnesses in the trial knew who he was. And the outcome of the trial rested partly on a positive identification of the alleged perpetrators of the assault - on two people in an Edinburgh pub.

    Said the Sheriff: “The fact that the name of Derek Riordan and his photograph might be well-known to the many persons who follow football is nothing to the point. The issue in this case was whether the conduct allegedly perpetrated against the two victims in the public house in this case could properly and lawfully be laid at the door of the person or persons accused in this case.

    “If, as turned out to be the case here, neither of the two civilian witnesses knew or were ever aware of having previously seen or heard of Derek Riordan, the risk of prejudice or impediment to the course of justice was substantial.”

    He continued: “That is why such great care and attention requires to be given to the question of the publication of a photograph of an accused person in the course of a trial if identification is in issue. This rule is so obvious and so well established that one would have thought it was part of the basic and elementary training for all journalists involved in court reporting.

    “I consider that this case demonstrates a significant and serious lapse in the well-established rules and, as I have indicated, I consider that the publications concerned created a substantial risk that the course of justice in these legal proceedings would be seriously impeded or prejudiced.”

    As well as arguing that Riordan was well-known, defence for stv and the two newspapers argued that each of the media outlets had taken the decision to publish the photograph based upon separate legal advice.

    At least one appeal is being lodged.

    Riordan was found not guilty.

    The Portugese seemed to produce a carbon copy of our "rabbits in headlights" away performance and at a very pedestrian pace should have shipped 5 in the first half. Bizarrely they also missed an open goal sitter.

    The italians did enough, slowed it down and took the three points but the Portugese looked even more vulnerable than last year. let's see how they fare at home against the pesky ukranians but reinforced my belief that away performances could see the undoing of any of the challengers to Milan in that group.

    Hear hear to your plea, especially after reading this from the BBC site. 'We know the rules - not 'it's bigoted and wrong'. My gran died 26 years ago past January - time to get the old black arm band out.

    After the attack Mr Goram said he was "sick of being called a bigot for no reason."

    He recently spoke out against sectarian singing at football matches, warning fans: "We all know the rules so we've just got to abide by them - it's simple, it's just got to stop."

    Mr Goram sparked controversy in 1998 by wearing a black armband during an Old Firm game following the murder of Loyalist terrorist Billy Wright.

    He said the gesture was in memory of his aunt, who had died four months earlier.

    I always suspected the lyric to Matty Groves must have been by William Topaz McGonagall:-

    "Well it's true I have two beaten swords and they cost me deep in the purse
    But you will have the better of them and I will have the worse"

    & "Well, get up, get up," Lord Donald cried, "get up as quick as you can
    It'll never be said in fair England that I slew a naked man"

    That must have come from the same pen as the man who gave us

    "On yonder hill there stood a coo
    It must have gone cos its no there noo."

I'm sure I miss a lot of very interesting stuff. But I haven't watched Scotland Today for a long time or bought or even read either of the two papers mentioned since that Newcastle night out. I am constantly disappointed by Celtic players and Staff giving interviews to either. I'm sure that even more Celtic fans would stop buying reading them if there was no interviews with Celtic people in them. They would probably always have Charlie Nicholas to fall back on but very few people think he is a celt any more!

    On the most recent Guardian football podcast (excellent if you haven't heard it - second only to Baker and Kelly), Kevin mentioned that he was 'looking on a Celtic website and was astonished to read that we hadn't kept a clean sheet for almost a year'.

    I like the song fine but the lyrics did make me laugh.

    It's just a pity that, in passing from family to family, the lyrics never entered the house of someone with a less prosaic bent than the ones who wrote:-

    "And in his hurry to carry the news, he bent his breast and ran
    And when he came to the broad millstream, he took off his shoes and he swam."

    Stuck Mrs TT on an Airbus last night with oldest grandson, she probably passed WG’s fraulein halfway across the Atlantic, right now she’s in the south coast of Engurland. On Monday she heads out along with grandson and daughter who teaches in Asia for Rome, Assisi, Tuscany and Venice, I blame the convent schools.

    So here am I sitting here via Burger King with the dug and one of my other grandsons who I just picked up fae JK and a nice glass of Chardonnay before going out and preparing the garden for the Fall or Autumn as you brits call it.

    Originally posted this on Wednesday but somehow it got lost in cyber space, still feel the same way though.

    Now that the weeping and gnashing of teeth about WGS’s naivety in his tactics is almost over is there anyone on here who at kick off time would have preferred a 5-4-1, I don’t think so as there was huge optimism in the air that we would at last end our dismal away run in the ECLC.

    WGS used the same tactics that worked in Moscow and frankly he was out coached by a wily oul fox. I feel also that Scotland’s victory last week did us no favours as we had players out there that probably believed their own hype.

    One consolation was that Gordie didnae resort tae the tactics in Bratislava and continued chasing the elusive goal, by pulling Paul Hartley back the side started to settle down a bit, otherwise we were looking at a right good humphin destroying any confidence that this young team had.

    Shakhtar are a good side, when they beat us a couple of years back it was mooted that they were building a side to compete with the big boys, somehow that fell by the wayside, looks like they are back in business again and they have their sights on the last 16.

    They will cause problems at home for the other two sides in the section, however, it has been stated that they do not travel well, October 3rd is a big night for us not just for that fact that we play AC but also the Brazilians in the Donetsk side will be playing in the mother country so that might auger well for the bhoys.

    This is a young Celtic side and they will learn from last night as will Gordon Strachan, he’s a young coach and as I stated above was outfoxed. Personally I would not be too upset if we dropped into the UEFA Cup as we have a better chance of reaching the final, that’s if we can avoid Spartak, and possibly winning it than the ECLC at present, although I reckon we are only a couple of years away from achieving this.

    As an oul Tim I like to look back for inspiration as well as consolation and I now hark back to April 29, 1964, that night we went to Budapest in the semis of the ECWC with a 3-0 lead from the first leg, a game in which wee Jinky scored his first European goal with the other two fae Stevie Chalmers, we also had the luxury of a John Clark missed penalty, so off we went to the Magyar capital with hopes of an appearance in the final at the Heysell Stadium, alas we lost 0-4 and the winners MTK met Sporting Lisbon in the final where after an extra time 3-3 tie, they succumbed 0-1 to the Portuguese hoops in the replay at the Bosuil Stadium in Antwerp.

    The response from the Celtic boardroom amidst much warranted criticism for failing to defend a three goal lead in a major European Semi was that Celtic did not know the meaning of defensive football; it was not “the Glasgow Celtic way”.

    Let’s fast forward to April 25, 1967, almost 3 years later and Celtic are now traveling to Prague with a 3-1 lead this time, this is the first season that away goals would count as double in case of a draw in this tournament however only up to the semis so we had a two goal cushion, lessons had been learned and the Big Mhan unashamedly played it tight at the back with Stevie ploughing a lone a lone furrow up front. The greater picture dictated we do not “play football the Glasgow Celtic way” that afternoon.

    Four weeks later the Messiah stated "If you're ever going to win the European Cup, then this is the day and this is the place. But we don't just want to win this cup; we want to do it playing good football - to make neutrals glad we've won it, glad to remember how we did it.", and after success was achieved he said "There is not a prouder man on God's Earth than me at this moment. Winning was important, aye, but it was the way that we have won that has filled me with satisfaction. We did it by playing football. Pure, beautiful, inventive football. There was not a negative thought in our heads. Inter played right into our hands; it's so sad to see such gifted players shackled by a system that restricts their freedom to think and to act. Our fans would never accept that sort of sterile approach. Our objective is always to try to win with style."

    We learnt from 1964 and we’ll learn again from Tuesday night, as this IS a young Celtic team, as was the 1964 team. Apart from Jock and the maturing of the side the other main differences in 1967 were the Faither in goal. Here we had a two time FA Cup Winner between the posts to bring a calmness too the defence and also wee Ten Thirty a player who had played in the Final of the old Fair Cities Cup and also had the dubious distinction of breaking the England captain’s jaw, nae shrinking violet this wee mhan. Mibbees that’s what we are missing, an oul heid at the back and also in the middle.

    Anyways I’ll leave you with a wee song that I first heard walking doon the Burma Road in the Renton which was penned by a couple of jeelyeaters back in the days in the wilderness between the 7-1 gemme and the return of Big Jock:

    “As I was walking doon the Gallowgate;
    The doors and windaes opened wide;
    You can hear the mhen and whomen shout;
    See the Celtic team run out;
    Here are some of the bhoys;

    So if you go tae Hampden Park or ibrox;
    To see again the bhoys in white and green;
    We won’t shout out God save the queen;
    We’ll give 3 cheers to the young Celtic team;

    So don’t be too hard on the young Celtic team;
    Give honour where honour is due;
    And don’t forget that in days gone by;
    They were as gallus as you and I………”

    Roll on Sunday and another comprehensive gubbin of our farm team.

    From the Official Site :

    jinky to be honoured with statue

    CELTIC Football Club today announced that it is to construct a statue at Celtic Park to commemorate and celebrate the life of Celtic Legend Jimmy Johnstone.

    The statue of Jimmy will be funded solely by the club and will be positioned at the main entrance at Celtic Park. Planning with regards to the statue will begin immediately.

    Jinky signed for Celtic in 1961. He made over 500 appearances for Celtic, scoring 130 goals and he was an integral part of the Lisbon Lions side which lifted the European Cup in 1967.

    A true character, Jimmy’s flair and style was admired world-wide as he tormented defences with his skill and trickery.

    As well as playing so successfully for Celtic, Jimmy also achieved 23 caps for Scotland. In 2002, Jimmy was voted Celtic’s greatest ever player by the club’s supporters.

    Tragically, Jimmy passed away in 2006 after his brave battle against Motor Neurone Disease. On the day of his funeral, thousands of people lined the streets of Glasgow to pay their respects.

    The contribution which the great Jock Stein and the Lisbon Lions have made to the club, has already been marked through the naming of stands at Celtic Park.

    Celtic Chairman Brian Quinn said: “We are delighted to announce that the magical Jimmy Johnstone is to be remembered and recognised in this way.

    “The statue will celebrate Jimmy’s huge contribution to the club and will be a permanent tribute to Jimmy for generations to come.”

    Brian added: “Jimmy really was the greatest. An entertainer on and off the field, he is sorely missed by everyone, however, we are delighted to ensure that his life will be celebrated in this way.

    “It is most fitting that the great Jock Stein, the Lisbon Lions as a team and now Jimmy Johnstone, a magical player and a man who graced the Celtic shirt with such distinction, will be recognised in this way at Celtic Park.”

    Agnes Johnstone, Jimmy’s widow said: "It is wonderful that Jimmy is to be honoured in this way at Celtic Park and our family is very grateful to the club for this gesture.

    "Clearly Celtic Park played such a huge part in Jimmy's life and it is fantastic that this permanent tribute will now be placed at the stadium for fans to see."

    40 years ago this week was the end of a disastrous week for Celtic.
    The European Champions lost two games in quick succession:
    1-0 to Rangers at Ibrox on the Saturday (remember when we played all our games on a Saturday?)
    2-1 to Dynamo Kiev at CP in the first round of the European Cup.
    This was followed by a draw against St Johnstone.

    I do not recollect a call to sack the manager or board for failing to invest after the Lisbon triumph.

    BTW we then went on an unbeaten run unti the end of the season, dropping only two more points. League was won from Rangers by 2 points only.

    Here's to a repeat this season. Or would this prove too tense for our not so young hearts?

    'GG checking back.

    Zammmama may be quite decent but he is very inconsistent and not often lasts 90 minutes. We have a midfield quartet who are individually miles better than he and have proven themselves to be so this season. Hibs are a decent side but we're about 15 goals in the plus column to the better and a load of points, even this early. We could also mention their apparently dodgy keeper and a defence which has conceded twice as many goals as us. Strange that everyone says how great a football side Hibs have been in recent years when they've got a CIS Cup and a few points off us to show for it. The word 'inconsistent' is made for them and while they have some decent players outside of their English third division trawl, they don't worry me.

    re BDO consulting report.

    I think it is taking into consideration how much debt can be built up by the clubs and there is no doubt Rangers have a larger debt facility than Celtic.

    It only took a £9 million debt to be within a day of ending Celtic and although the figure is a great deal higher now, given Celtic's almost unprecedented ability to raise finance through share issues, the maximum allowable debt will still be below Rangers especially in light of what happened during the early 90s.

    Where would you play him? He seems to have a free-role at Hibs and all I'm saying really is that we have better in our first XI. He is quick-ish, always looking to go forward, but has defensive frailties and tires and is subbed on 70 minutes. I'm going on previous games against us - Sunday will give us a clearer indication, especially if we don't play with a holding-mid.

    I'd be more tempted by Fletcher. Not the finished article by any stretch but let's think a younger, quicker, more clinical, more agile Jan and he sounds a stick-on.

It takes a minimum of 10 to make me sleep easily of a night during a season. I have too many mental scars caused by us losing to them (every single time they have scored against us, when I think about it).Mind you, if it comes down to us winning the league by a single goal of a difference, I'll more than settle for that each and every summer, even if I'm a nervous wreck by that time. Long may we hammer them.

    Importance of full-backs in European Football.

    My view on this is that very few goals are scored from a point where possession in conceded in the opposition penalty box and the ball is then carried by the opposition unbroken (i.e. without a free-kick, corner or throw-in) to score.

    A full back who can hold the ball for 50-60 yards is invaluable and is the main reason why I bang on about Agathe so much. The idea that Agathe 'canny croas a baw' is to me bizarre given the fact that he most likely received possession in his own penalty box.

    I am not sure of the figures but would be surprised if more than 2% of goals are scored in all football by a team starting their attack from their own box with the play continuing unbroken until the ball crosses the line.

    I don't know if research has been carried out in this area, I would be surprised if it hasn't given the amount of TV footage available these days.

    Your right about the clean sheet v Hibs,thats a must,I did'nt realise that it was so long since we had a clean sheet in an away game.

    Let's hope we get a good result,and the clean sheet.

    Looking back to Tuesday,what happened in that fateful 8mins,
    did Gordon set out the wrong tactics,or did Paul not play to instructions.

    Hands up to Gordon he sorted the problem out quickly,but it should never have happened.

    I do'nt think we should be to despondent yet,we've still got 15 points to play for,and all going well, we'll get our customary 9 home points,and maybe a point from Benfica away.

    Looking forward to the game on Sunday,but I wish we'd get back to playing games on a Saturday,Televisions taking control of football in this country.

    In a couple of weeks time there will be only ONE game on in the Premier League in England, at what used to be the normal kick off time, 3.00pm on a Saturday,I think it's Aston Villa, against some other team.

    About the game on Sunday,we've been winning after coming back from European games lately,and we should be rested enough,I expect a good win,and not to ugly a win.

    LETS GET BACK TO SATURDAY FOOTBALL.

    I think that instead of just a statue of Jinky , Celtic should commission a mega statue that would be of the Lisbon Lions squad & Jock Stein , in a pose similar to the ones we see in photos were there is a group of players standing either side of Jock Stein & a group of players crouched in front of them.

    The European Cup would of course be at the front , proudly being shown by that amazing group of men.

    I know that this would be very expensive in comparison to a single statue of Jinky & it would also be massive outside the front entrance to Celtic Park but the place could do with a wee freshening up & what better way. Just imagine , our founder Brother Walfrid & our Greatest Ever Team , standing side by side.

    Does anyone else have any views on this ?

    I agree about the TV deal. The SPL was sold down the river in my opinion when we lost the Sky deal. Ok, the games were 6.05 on a Sunday which suits no-one but the exposure and kudos was worth it. No tv deal (pubs and clubs only), games on a Saturday at 3pm and all live on the web (or C67) is my controversial, unworkable ideal.

    The difficulty would perhaps be in leaving out the likes of John Fallon, Joe McBride and a few others. Guys who were very much part of the '67 season even if they did not play in Lisbon. These guys are always included as 'Lisbon Lions' in functions, trips etc and were absolutely crucial to what was achieved. I imagine the Lions who made up the 11 on 25th May see them as part of folklore too and although there are great pictures and the boast of a Glasgow 11, to immortalise just these 11 I doubt would be the wish of the men themselves. Just a thought.
