Transfer window leaves Strachan tired looking, but ready to run at some brick walls

I assume we are all happy Thomas Gravesen has gone, for the time being anyway? As high a profile signing as we have made, Thomas caused enormous excitement this time last year when he joined from Real Madrid, but he was soon to cause concern at Old Trafford and slip into midfield obscurity against SPL opposition.

I hope he succeeds at Everton, as he will either become our asset or our liability in May 2008.

Remember the week Kenny Miller signed? “Why would Celtic be interested in a Rangers flop”, I said. Then I got the nod. Gordon Strachan had watched Kenny shine for Scotland against Norway and Italy, but Scottish football fans had seen more of him, and knew he was not a regular goal scorer.

His signing was an official success; we made money out of him, so Gordon can count him in the plus column, but Celtic need strikers who put the ball in the net; and his ball control!

Jiri Jarosik clearly expected to make his escape this month and as he is not featuring on the field, I hoped he would get his way, but surprisingly for a player who came from the league where they believe due diligence is a persistent morning precipitation, he could not find a club.

Jarosik and Balde seem destined to weigh heavy on the South Stand wage bill.

Our incoming business was done so long ago they don’t feel like new players any more. Donati and Brown look inspired signings, streets ahead of Gravesen and Jarosik, who were signed for the same positions last year.

Scott McDonald is a player, and if he delivers the same chance-to-goal ratio he achieved at Motherwell he will be a sensation. Chris Killen looks to be here to put pressure on Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, which I hope he does.

The whole Jean-Joel Perrier-Doumbe situation is a mystery to me. He failed to make an appearance for four months before scoring the winner in the Scottish Cup Final. Now back after a summer tour of his own, he looks no closer to the first team than he did in February.

Gordon Strachan looked tired at lunch time yesterday. He looked like a man who was running on empty after climbing a high peak, but while others would have suggested more money was needed to reach ever higher peaks, he talked about getting more out of his players.

I might be wrong, but I think he sounded a bit disappointed that he was unable to add to his squad, I am sure some of you are.

One thing he has in his favour is a dressing room prepared to run through brick walls for him, and for the first time, >95% of the support taking up the same position. It would be a foolish man who would bet against him.

I dont really care who they've signed to be honest i do feel a bit dissapointed about our failure to strengthen certain areas.

Im starting to get the feeling that this wont be the last time im sitting dissapointed at the end of a transfer window.

The feeling is all too familliar.

Maybe we're just victims over our own good planning because we got some pretty good players in early.

Oh well no point moaning about something we cant change.

Lets just look forward to sunday and the CL when it starts

Been waering out F5 for the last half hour hopefully, but without any great expectation.

I'm disappointed that we didn't get at least a full back but we have a better squad than at the start of last season and year on year improvement is what I am looking for.

A few interesting debates will continue tomorrow, I'm sure. But for now goodnight all.

No matter, we'll still win the league.

Rangers have had a good start but there will be many a tough game to come for them in the months ahead, mark my words. Also while some on the last thread bemoaned our lack of depth in the squad if injuries hit.

Well b**ger me, what will happen to Rangers if injuries hit, nobody can tell me they have more strength in depth than us. Scratch below the surface of the first team and there is nothing there at all.

Three in a row, not as easy as the past two season but it's still ours for the taking.

The Joe Doumbe situation is a strange one alright.Surely Sunday against St. Mirren would be an ideal time to introduce him back to the fold,in place of Lee Naylor.

Maybe if Lee see`s that he wont be an automatic first pick with no competition for his position,it could be just the pick-me-up he needs.

We`ll just have to soldier on with our current squad until January.

Their signings today are nothing better than average and won't improve them by much at all, not to mention how is Wattie(copyright Radio Clyde FM)gonna keep his abundance of midfielders happy now, they must surely have nearly as many as us now!!

This last minute stuff has to stop for the health of the Celtic supporting people. So in January, I expect an announcement on the penultimate day of the transfer window that we will NOT be signing or attemting to sign anyone.

Naismith? Now there will be itchy feet at Ibrox with the bevvy of "talent" they have upfront.

    THE DAMNED UNITED
what makes me tired is when you are dragged down the artificial farce that is the transfer window.....no wonder WGS is carrying bags under those shrewd eyes....what he has done has put the team in place before THE IMPORTANT GAME and stated that he has his eyes on JANUARY. The reason the press don't like strachan is that he tells it as it is, doesn't suffer foooooooools gladly....doesn't play games and WAS along with key individuals party to the pressure that made STV buckle. Strachan made it clear that unless he could bring in better players the squad will survive until Jan. BTW MIdboro muddied the water on ICEMAN deal... but thats besides.
What is required is that all the CFC family look towards what is about to happen... we are on the verge of greatness... which may take 4 years...but the fact is that we are building towards ????
    C'mon believe.

Ok. Its over.We can all settle down now and look at the situation.

Personally, I feel that the team is building up a momentum, game by game.

Players are getting to know each other, playing a new system, which is not only pleasing to the eye, but also very effective.

In the five games or so we have played this season, we have made more chances in front of goal than I remember for the whole of last season. Slight exaggeration perhaps, but you know what I mean.

The full backs have still to catch up on their form. Incidentally, Milan lost a poor goal at the back post tonight, similar to what happened with us.

To date, the biggest disappointment with the full backs is the quality of their crossing. That can and will be worked on.

Why the comparisons with what is happening in Govan?

They are papering over the cracks and whatever their aim is, they certainly are not building a team. Hand to mouth springs to mind.

    VENNEGOOR,

Do you consider yourself one of the Twelfth Man crew? If so, be a good team mate.

Like everyone else, disappointed that we didn't succeed in getting some sensational signings in before midnight - but relieved that we haven't signed lesser quality for the sake of it.

Keep the money to try again for better quality in January rather than spend it on squad players - we already have them in place.

We are covered in all positions, even the two fullback positions. We have failed to acquire better full backs that the current incumbants. With Doumbe as cover at RB and O'Dea and Wilson as cover at LB, if we couldn't find better we should not waste money on more squad cover.

Yesterday we were overloaded with midfield players who we could never keep happy. Now we have no cover for Brown?

Nonsense. Sno is good cover for Brwon, as is Hartley as is Jarosik in his natural position. He won a few games for us last season playing out of position, so the cover is there.

We have a better squad than last season.

We have a better team than last season.

We will score more goals and concede less goals than last season.

And I am confident we will win the league again.

WGS has not given up on Riordan. So long as Riordan has not given up we will see much more of him in coming months. It's up to him now.

Disappointment comes with losing. Celtic lost nothing tonight.

In my humble opinion, we will win the league again and reach the last 16. We are getting better and better, game after game.

Rumoured signings were hardly of the wow variety.

CQN sorts out the wheat from the chaff on nights like this.

Our big signings were made early with the Champions League in mind.

Winning is about forging a TEAM and not merely collecting players in competition with other clubs.

Our team 3 is just about selectable (Kennedy, Sno, Hartley and Riordan battling for positions occupied by good players, and there excellent young guns waiting for their chance).

To the doubters, enjoy the uplifting experience of watching a very good young Celtic team prove you wrong. To the rest, well we KNOW we are winning all the way!

    Yes, agree on Riordan.

A bit disappointed we didn't sign a quality striker, but the upside is that this leaves more opportunities for Deeks in a forward role.

I think he is a tremendous talent - & he has an instinct for what is going on around him that Aiden seems to lack. I think he can shine if given the opportunity...

F5 has been getting battered, don't know why because about 4 hours ago I knew it wasn't happening.

Regardless of what we say about the 'old media' they normally have a sniff of something, even if its just before it happens.

I am one who would have sold Artur 2 weeks ago for £9 million but am disappointed to sell Miller for £3 million. Can't understand why I'm not a top class manager, I do ok on FM ;-)

The only conclusion that I can come to is that we are setting our sights too high.

As much as we will all stand toe-to-toe with anyone and tell them that Celtic are one of THE very biggest clubs in the World, are we trying to attract players who will look at the SPL as their 2nd/3rd choice.

Sometimes we get lucky with this type of player but I bet the %age is low.

Naismith isn't the answer, most people on here are probably more frustrated that they have signed the single player that they have always said they wanted. We wanted another GIUY ... Brown is more the sufficient in that category.

The Celtic v Rangers games are more likely to be even more important this year. We have not been as dominant as we should over the last couple of years and they have improved, thats the concern.

I can only hope that their smug attitudes are short lived, Eidur is still at Barca and can still ruin their season, he doesn't need to be at CP.

If WGS is disappointed, I am sure they will look at who the targets were and their profile. we cannot wait until the last 30 mins because they are waiting to assess any other offers.

One final thing, how many players have signed this evening without completing a full medical... 350 deals today seems to be a panic rather than good management.

Lets look at realistic targets without having to rely on a Naismith as the saviour.

    Pain? I don't know.

Handed who what edge? Their support who may feel that their supremacist trendencies have been re-established?

We're talking about football teams here and Celtic are streets ahead of Rangers. Look at the two groups in the CL. We think we've a chance. If we swapped with them we would still think we had a chance.

Ah but I am looking at it through green tinted glasses!

Correct! See if you can guess why.

We've missed nothing tonight, other than the chance for the site to melt down over something else.

Keevins et al have all the material they need from some of the utter garbage that has been posted on here.

And the reason it is garbage?

Well it is not because it opposite to my view.

It's because it is comatose journalism with no rationale, no analysis, no perspective and no ambition.

It is simply the school of 'I pays my money for my broadband and therefore I can let my fingers do the walking over the keyboard and whatever comes out is valid'.

Argue a case by all means.

Slander and defame on the basis of unfounded opinion is a waste of bits bytes pixels and my time.

    It is insulting.

Let us know who we should have bought. How much we should have paid. How we persuade their manager to let them go..and a hundred of other things.

Don't just shout into an cold dark empty cave that you'd prefer a 3 bedroom fully furnished house!

By all means say that we wish that areas of the team had been enhanced, but to transform that into some declaration of negligence on the part of our administration is unacceptable, because it is patently unsupportable and verging on the psychotically ridiculous.

We bought players early and not late, this window.

I remember a time when panic was really the order of the day as absolutely nothing happened.

Short memories are attributed to Goldfish who just go round and round and seem to learn nothing.

It appears that it doesn't just apply to goldfish.

The past has gone but I dream of the day when we have a team of 11 home grown players out on that park again.

Don't tell me it is not possible.

5 Years ago we were lucky to have one!

Having such 'midget' defenders didn't do us much harm in the SPL or the CL last season. Nor did your 'lack of pace' argument cut any mustard last season in both competitions.

We've sold a player who, admittedly through 'injury' (which will clear up to allow a debut tomorrow) wouldn't have been a first-pick on Saturday or Wednesday and some are down that we didn't sign one who wouldn't have walked into the team.

That last one was on Naismith (signed weeks ago and don't let anyone tell you different), signed by a manager of such 'quality' that his last twelve signings have borne resemblance to the wee guy at primary who picks the guys after you've had first choice, who then goes for quantity over quality. We've got the quality, we've got the better players, we've got the better squad, we'll keep winning, we'll beat Rangers, we've got a country mile better chance of progressing in the CL. Assuming there's no arguments to those points, where's the worry.

Did I want 3/4 players today? Of course, I bought the hype too. In the 44 minutes since the window closed (ach, it was drafty anyways) I've stepped back. Carefully, as you do when you're standing up for the Champions.

My belief is that Gordon has decided that the squad is good enough at this time. I'm sure he had players in mind, but if they can't/won't sign, I believe Gordon has confidence in what he has.
Whether that confidence is misplaced, only time will tell.

Let's enjoy and appreciate the talented players we have got and not moan about the ones we thought we might get.

Remember we've still got Artur and Naka both of whom were linked with moves.

I can imagine WGS is now thinking to himself right I've got a job to get the guys who were looking for a move motivated and back challenging in the squad. Make no mistake they were not getting a game cause they were getting edged out, now that they are staying lets use them.

Big Bobo to play on Sunday.
    "Bobo's gonnae get you!"
    "Bobo's gonnae get you!"
    "Bobo's gonnae get you!"
    "Bobo's gonnae get you!"

    New Poster

Evening all, I've read a lot of comments with interest tonight and I cannot believe the negativity. I am as disappointed as everyone else that we have not strengthened the team whilst we are in the ascendency but I think we have to trust WGS and the SSM. There is no point in spending money on Naismith to sit on the bench when he clearly wanted to play for TFOD. He is a good player but can anyone here say he would have been a first team regular? I don't think so, Gudjohnsen would have been a different matter but we don't know the in's and out's of the deal so no point harping on about it. Let's not forget Eto got injured again and although only short term Barca could have quite easily pulled the plug.

We could have done with strengthening in both full back areas but the back 4 we had out on Wednesday night have hardly played together so if they get a run of games they will only improve as a unit, I don't think they are CL class and we could have done with someone with a touch of class who could defend and play as well but we just have to get on with things. Midfield has improved and will only get better as their understanding with each other grows and up front we know that our back up's Zurawski and Deek know the way to goal. JVOh will come good (remember Old Trafford last season) and Scott McD will only improve themore he plays and learns frm the midfielders supplying him.

We are a better team than TFOD and I'm convinced we will show this as the season goes on whether we makethe last 16 of the CL is another thing, there is no point being so negative as some previous posters have clearly been when we are facing up to one of the most exiting times I can remember as a Celtic fan. We have so many things in our favour at the moment and we have to trust the management side with the money. I'm sure hey have tried their best and that's all that we can ask.

    Hail Hail.

I was speaking with my brother after the CL qualifier on Wed, and he queried whether so many chances would have come Spartak's way with Lennon in midfield.

He may (I say may) have been a hindrance in the SPL, but in Europe he was a necessity.

NL, you will be missed ...

Gordybhoy - you said "celtic have scored an own goal by not strengthening the squad during the transfer window".

What would you call Scott Brown, Scott McDonald, Massimo Donati, Chris Killen and Perrier-Doumbe?

Put it this way. If we had brought in those five players in the last few days, everyone would be talking about what a wonderful transfer window we have had. The point is, Strachan and Lawwell brought them in early, ie BEFORE the big CL qualifier and in time for them to blend in to some degree.

Too many Celtic fans listen to speculative rumours from questionable sources and are then disappinted when it doesn't materialise and, rather than question the source, criticise the club.

Finally, Strachan did say a few days ago that he was looking to January now for more incomers, yet still people fall into the trap of getting excited over groundless speculation.

In the past we bemoaned the habit of MON going into the market on the final day of the window. Now when we get in quick and tie up players who might have moved elsewhere had we dragged our heels, AND in time to prepare for the big CL game, we demand last ditch signings, just for the sake of it.

Sometimes you just can't win in this world.

    Hail Hail

Can't say I'm that bothered by no deadline day transfer activity. Most of our business was done in the summer.

Looking at the squad we have cover at goalkeeper. I would have liked a left back signed personally but this was the only position that I thought the manager may look at. I said weeks ago (and some agreed) that with 6 centre halves already it was unlikely we would get another one.

We are pretty well covered in midfield. Riordan can cover for Naka and McGeady while with Jarosik staying, he and hartley are there to cover the central area (OK I'll mention CQN's favourite son (SNO) who I suppose could be used as well!)

4 strikers for 2 places completes the squad.

That's enough to be getting on with until January.

Jean-Claude Darcheville, Nacho Novo, S.Naismith , Kris Boyd, Daniel Cousin, Alan Gow.

The new Celtic philosophy is that you play the long game. Yes, this often involves getting players in on a bosman, and seeing how they work out. Equally, they now have to look at the WOW signings and how they have not worked out. Splash cash late in the day, or without eh full research, and repent at your leisure. Maloney would have been a known entity and would have been low risk. Snap him up. Appiah? Don't know that much about him to be fair, but £5m and a hefty wage bill? Mibbees Aye, Mibbes Naw. Possibly we're keeping out powder dry until Jan, when we've already qualified for the semi's and the league is wrapped up.

If only we could have got a hold of S Brown from hibernian - what a player, held onto to Naka and Boruc and signed a former £10m player from AC Milan. What a sqaud we'd have then ...

The argument about KM could go on and on. Fact is he didn't score enough and no matter how hard you work for the team you will only be judged on hamoun of goals scored and unfortunately he didn't score enough. For a Bosman signing the money we've brought in makes sense and as I previously said you have to judge WGS judgement as he would not have let him go if he didn't think we had the players to replace him.

    Wizard

Saw Paul McGowan a few times playing for Morton last season and was always impressed with his directness and eye for goal he could step up and be a real player for us I think if given a chance. Would be nice to try him in some early CIS cup games I think.

The point about Doumbe is that having only seen him as often as everyone else on here, I don't think he is a bad player, just not a world beater. But he is a recently signed member of the squad, presumably to cover the two first choice full backs. So,after a 120 min European match in which the left back goes off injured, now is the time to play him.

However, we are weaker than we were at 10.20 on wednesday night. that is a major diappointment. kenny miller had a fine start to the season, and while the fee is good business, the squad is undoubtedly weaker than it was 48 hours ago. it is quite wrong that celtic seem to be on course for a second 15m profit in succession but yet get drawn against ac milan then ensure the squad is weakened between the draw and the game.

Wanting a better one is not only understable to me, it is laudable and ambitious.

I just happen to think that it was a feeling shared by GS, PL, BQ, even DD.

Finding the recruits was probably a shade more problematic and therefore the disappointment doesn't justify or rationalise the derogatory accusations of negligence, lack of ambition, or profiteering that have been voiced on here.

I am disappointed that no premium signings were made.

But I don't know who they would have been, I don't know how much they would have cost, and I don't really know anything about what was happening behind the scenes.

But I'll tell you this, GS and PL knew who they wanted.

This time they lost, next time they'll win.

Till then we will rely on and support Gordon's managerial and coaching skills.

Throwing the duster at them would seem a bit daft!

Be disappointed, but surely not condemnatory.

Please if someone disagrees with me and can state who we should have enquired about but didn't, who we should have bought but didn't, how much more we should have invested but refused, and how much of what has gone should appear on the web-site, then please do.
