Uefa Champions League changes will turn league failure into a trend

Last week, Uefa president Michel Platini, presented his proposals to change the qualification format of the Champions League from 2009. The headline suggestion is to allow four domestic cup winners access to the Champions League group stage after a mini-cup competition between the winners of the top 16 Uefa nations' cups. To make some space for these cup winners, the top three nations will lose one of their four Champions League places which are currently allocated to the top four league places.

The more prosaic detail will have a bigger impact on Scotland.

Scotland’s position in the Uefa rankings has fluctuated between 10th and 11th (where they are now) for some years. As a result, we are allocated two Champions League places, with the Scottish champions occasionally getting direct access to the group stage.

Platini has recommended that countries 1-3 are allocated three places, countries 4-6 are allocated two and that countries 7-12, which would include Scotland, are allocated only one place. The Scottish Cup winners would enter the two-round 16 team mini-cup competition.

While Scotland’s league winners would be guaranteed entrance into the group stages, the team who finish second in the league would need to win the cup and then negotiate their way through Platini’s summer competition before reaching the group stage; a prospect far more daunting than ties against FK Zeta and Red Star Belgrade.

Two months ago we discussed how second-tier leagues like the SPL and its equivalent in Holland, Greece and Portugal had increasingly become dominated by one team as a result of European income. If these proposals are ratified in November this trend will become even more marked.

More than just planning to win the league, we should consider why an event, like losing the league, becomes a trend. Most European football teams have practically no contingency budget. They are overwhelmingly in debt, which only deepens when results go bad.

Instead of planning only for short term objectives, which even the dumbest goldfish can do, the question of how a club would respond to a failure and resource a recovery to stop it turning into a trend, is even more important. Unfortunately for clubs run by a debt-addicted boards, this question is never answered. For many fans, even asking the question is a heresy

There is a higher cost to being in debt than interest payments.

edb: you're right. Rangers U19 won their league last year by 3 points from us. Our U19's had won it the prev 4. The reserve league (rebranded from U21 in 2003-4) has been won by us for last 6 years.

    Paul67,

didn't address your post in my desire for first post ! My first one.

Are there any details on what happens to the teams who lose out on the mini-cup competition , i.e the 12 losers out of the 16 ? Do they drop into the Uefa Cup as before ? If so , that means 12 clubs instead of the current 16 will be parachuting in , or will there still be qualifying rounds for CL group stage like there is at the moment? Lots of q's , I know - I'll give you time to respond . Is 1 hr sufficient ? :)

It's nice to see Luca Santonocito and Tomislav Pavlov played a part. People have criticized our scouting network a bit lately but between them two, Sno, the two Icelandic lads, and the number of Irish guys and possibly the three Trinidad and Tobago, guys they seem like they've been very busy.

BTW the youngsters averaged a goal every 4.7 minutes!

Apparently Islam is still progressing to be the guaranteed top professional footballer that his obvious talents so far have shown.

I think he's still only 14. I don't think there will be a question about will he make it? The question is will it be with Celtic. He's apparently THAT GOOD.

It'll most likely be down to his family to decide, but only when he's of an age to be held to a contract.

    Here's hoping.

It seems like MP is trying to tweak the old ECWC-which of the 3 old Euro competitions was the easiest to win,due to the variable quality of the teams involved.

While I applaud his reforms of the ECL ie let's have more Champions represented, this seems over-complicated and has as much chance of getting off the ground in November as a 10p rocket thats been tied to Michelle Mcmanus.

I think the lad's name is Ishmael not Islam.

Last any of us heard he was still working his way up through the various levels of the youth team structure.

Think it may be U14/U15 level or thereabouts.

Sannabhoy, congrats on your first, first.

Teams who fail at the first round of the mini-cup competition would drop out of European competition. Teams who lose in the second round would drop to the Uefa Cup.

There will still be qualifying rounds for the CL group stage, but there will only be 6 places available via this route, not 16 as is currently the case.

Various, from end of last post... sorry, I did indeed get the U19's and U21's achievements back to front, and stand corrected. I do know some of my history, but the Alzheimer's is kicking in a bit now.

Of course, the youths also got stuffed 5-0 by Rangers in last season's Youth Cup Final. So clearly they've progressed a at least a little since then!

I would caution however, that the youth & reserve results quoted on the Celtic website are rarely up to date, and while the same results on the SPL site seem to be up to date, the league tables are not.

What happens in the event of a league and cup double?

Would Dunfermline for example last year have had a crack at the Champions league or would it have reverted to the second placed league team?

Either way that scenario makes a mockery of the system. I'm not sure Platini isn't just tinkering to give himself something to do.

  • At 06/09/07 13:22, Bigjock67 said…

Sounds great, we wont have to qualify any more, as we will go straight into the groups as Scottish champions. No more sticky Spartak ties. There is the added bonus, of us doing the double would also knock Rankers out of the reckoning for CL.

    Marty,

Islam Feruz is indeed progressing very well and has been training with Tom Boyd's under 17s this week, although he still remains part of John Sludden's under 14 squad. The boy undoubtedly has the ability but as Greendog says, he is already attracting attention from major EPL clubs and there was concern that he (and his family) may have moved down there during this summer. Unfortunately, as he has progressed, the boy has also (not unsurprising for a boy his age) started to believe his own hype and has become a very aloof and arrogant young man, who says little or nothing to his team mates.....other than the briefest of mentions of what other clubs are pursuing him.

Hopefully the role Celtic and Tommy B in particular, played in securing his right to remain in this country, will be remembered when it comes to signing a contract but I wouldn't bet on it.

BlantyreKev - In the event of a double I believe the CL spot would revert to second in the league. Someone mentioned earlier (can't remember who, sorry) the interesting scenario, such as last year, where we could throw the cup final and deny Rangers a CL spot.

As for Platini tinkering to give himself something to do. I believe he was elected with a manifesto based on such policies, he is simply following his promises through.

Not sure if you saw my post on the last thread, but do TV deals have to be from one nation? For example, could we have a joint deal with the Championship. Of course they'd get the lions share but we'd get more than in the SPL deal and the Championship would surely benefit with having us and Rangers included in their TV deal as well as some European games...possibly.

Joining these leagues will never happen and the Premiership don't need us, but could a joint TV deal be possible?

  • At 06/09/07 13:36, Paul67 said…

BlantyreKev, Uefa did not clarify what happens in the event of a league and cup double (perhaps deliberately in order to give them some negotiation room), but I anticipate the place will go to the league runner up.

Geebee1978, interesting thought. There is no reason why leagues could not offer their TV rights as a package.

I think the English clubs that are in divs 2,3 and 4 got their fingers burned up to their elbows with the last TV deal[ITVDigital]

I think any future deal involving TV and these clubs would have to be absolutely gold-plated.

Is Setanta not a multi-national deal?Or is this a multi-national deal in which all the clubs get a more-or-less equal slice of the pie?

  • At 06/09/07 13:38, geebee1978 said…

The runners-up would then go into the draw. Thing is, teams from England and Scotland who win the FA Cup don't often finish outside CL places anyway. Hearts were a one-off and in England you have to go back to Everton 1995 for the last time one of the "Big Four" didn't win it. Daft idea. I though Platini would help the smaller leagues. All he's doing is creating more elitism within the league and killing competition even further in leagues where competition is already scarce.

    I originally embraced Platini....now I'm worried.

I think the cup winners' entry to the CL is a good idea in principle.

At least it will increase the number of participants who have the right to call themselves champions.

Plus, you never know when we might need to avail ourselves of this option, some time post GOD when we're going through a one-season re-build and Hibs romp the league.

If nothing else, it will add some much needed spice to national cup competitions.

The first thing I would do with the Scottish Cup would be to make the final an evening kick-off. It wouldn't have to be mid-week, but a night game would be much better for the final.

  • At 06/09/07 13:52, Pob said…

    Afternoon all,

MP did have some good points about the CL final being at the weekend rather than a Wednesday night to enable families to go. Also only holding the final in a venue with 75,000+ seats makes sense.

However he was talking about reducing the number of seats the sponsors get. While I agree this would be a good idea. will it not force the sponsors away? and with it their cash?

I think the current format and points system is ok and works well which is why the CL is so successfull as a commercial entity.

On a differnt subject. I know our domestic TV rights are worth about £1-2M but what about our international rights? is there any figures available for those?

Why don't we forgo the million or two and give the rights to anybody worldwide who wants to show the games.

The increased audience will lead to more fans worldwide, and we can recoup the loss by charging more for shirt sponsorship ... due to increased exposure??

    Just a thought.

    Hail Hail

Sounds like Platini is Europe's version of Duffield. Problem to be addressed - what to do? - a bit of lip service will do the trick.

Until the Champions League format consists solely of league winners from UEFA's umbrella then it's hardly a Champions League. Platini's daft new concept means that the rich clubs will stay rich & prosper whereas European teams who exist in financially restricted leagues such as ourselves, Red Star Belgrade, Spartak Moscow, IFK Gothenberg, Ajax etc are up right up against it.

Why would you want a Scottish Cup Final at night?

Cup Final day is one of the best days of the year and the more we can protect traditional 3pm kick offs the better I think, with plenty of time to party after it.

  • At 06/09/07 13:58, ~Kevtic said…

I think the proposal would finish leagues all over Europe. Top clubs in Holland, Belgium, Portugal along with Scotland would need to united into one league in order to off set the possible financial lose.

As these nations are already up against it in comparison to the rich leagues the almost guarenteed entry in to the Champions League qualification stage is the only thing - that their respective national leagues = have going for them.

  • At 06/09/07 14:01, Stuart said…

    Hi all,

Not sure I like this idea from Mr Platini. Qualifying from the cup winners comp wouldn't be easy, we'd have to beat one of the cup winners of the biggest nations.

I think this is very unlikely to lead to Platini's goal of 'broader geographic representation' at best it will give smaller teams a crack at qualifying since the cup is easier to win than coming second in the league.

Here's a related question; how many coefficient points are we losing this year? What I mean is how many do we need to maintain our current coeficient? And what do we need to do to get that many. Let's ignore the national component, though that should have improved recently.

    Regards,

    Stuart

The day can still be a great day. The party can still go on into the night, but the main course, the game itself, will be more exciting under floodlights.

    Just a personal opinion, obviously.

The Cupwinners competition is going to be the'Supertoto'-the Intertoto winners get into the Uefa Cup,the winners of this would get a chance of going straight into the big bucks.

It would be simpler just to decide that if you win your own league, and the league is highly rated, then you will go into the group stage.

Presumably MP wishes to keep the ECL fresh, with lots of new teams featuring, instead of the usual suspects every year.

    Except for us,of course.

This looks like a budget speech! He giveth, he taketh away! The 16 cup teams will come from vastly different leagues. At present Scotland team 2 needs to beat duffer FC and then possiblynotduffer FC to progress. Given the seeding unlikley to play teams from the top 4 leagues.

Under this proposal you would definitely get a team from a top 4 league and also a team from the 4-8 leagues and then a duffer FC.

For the big leagues they will merely see this as intertoto to the CL.

4 progress so you need to beat a Spain and a Portugal to gain entry.

If we don't win the league the route is significantly harder. Always.

I would prefer that the top 24 leagues all get a guaranteed place and the remaining 8 places are played for by other winners and league seconds in the top 24 only.

Sounds like tinkering for the sake of tinkering. Complete nonsense if you ask me. Bring back the Cup Winners Cup or give the Cup Winners automatic entry into the UEFA cup. The CL is for Champions.

On the bright side for the dark side, they would continue to have a chance of getting into the CL as the cup runners up rather than as League runners up. They will be all for it.

Looking at this year's CL group qualifers I'm sure Platini would like to see only 3 teams from England, Italy & Spain with 2 from Germany & Portugal. Ideally they'd be replaced by teams from countires like Belgium, Denmark, Serbia, Sweden etc

The big leagues aren't going to vote for this and there would be the threat of breakaway if it were imposed upon them.

So he's trying to engineer something whereby the stronger nations' representatives include weaker teams who are more like likely to fall in the qualifying stages.

Stuart. agree with Paul67. From the wonderful Bert Kassie , our current co-efficient is 62.064 which drops by 23.4 points next year (that's the end of the Seville effect). We've already earned 3.9 points this year (far group stage qualification) so have a provisional co-efficient of 42.5 putting us in 39th place. Worrying , we are going to drop another 15.4 points next year and the effects of Artmedia are going to be felt until 2011 !!

I noticed you mentioned going tae St Michaels, so I thought you might be interested in this wee story. Last week I was on holiday on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, its way out in the Atlantic, nae commercialism and closest I’ve seen tae Connemara.

I was walking up to the pier one afternoon when I noticed this van with a “cannae whack a cannae Scot” or words tae that effect sticker on it. The license plates were Virginia but were personalized with “From Rhu”, (mine are SVN WAN incidentally) couple of days later I spotted it again outside a house round the corner from where we were staying. I contacted the wee red heided lassie who owned it and said “yer a long way fae Rhu”, “where you from she asked”, “Balloch” I replied “I’m from Dumbarton” she said “so’s my wife said I, where aboots in Dumbarton” “Castlehill, “so’s my wife” as soon as I said that she then said “Rathlin Terace”, when she told me her name, (which is similar to a meal that EDB and Shug will be sharing on Friday) I then figured she went tae Clerkhil which she did via St Michaels, she has two uncles that are priests and her oul Grampa was a Pass Keeper at St Michaels for years, she then related that she had been talking to her da the night before and we were through on penalties. They are living in Washington but are returning next year, small world right enough.

Anyway back tae the sellick, first game, I cannae remember but it would have been a team that contained Charles Patrick, the Juggler, Smiler, the Wee Barra and big Hooky.

First game I kind of remember was against the huns at CP, might have been a reserve match, a huge crowd was there as it was the Monday of the September weekend, I was off school as the Vale took the Glasgow Holiday while Dumbarton had their own. As most of the older members of the family were at school in Dumbarton I was on my own so my mother, father, aunt and uncle took me to the Hamilton Races, Parkheid and the Five Past Eight Show at the Alhambra. My only memory of this is that Peter Goldie was playing for us (my uncle used tae run the Vale Emmet Juveniles which Peter played for before moving on to Duntocher Hibs and then Celtic) and I think it ended 2-2.

The first game I really recall was 50 year ago this month, the semis of the League Cup against Clyde over in Govan, we won 4-2 after Clyde clawed us back twice. When I got home that night elated my da was sitting on the chair in front of the tele singing to the tune of the Pat Boone hit of the time “on a day like today we passed the time away watching Celtic from the stand, oh how we laughed and we cried when Clyde equalized watching Celtic from the stand”.

There was also the opening of the Boagheid lights in there somewhere, I was prvileged with a stand seat that night, Charles Patrick turned on all the tricks think the score might have been 4-2. I was going tae the Millburn and Boagheid at that time as Glesca was too far away for a wee Bhoy tae go by himself, I was at the Millburn on the 19th of October 1957, a punter had this big "portable radio" as they were called then and every time we scored he would switch over tae the England/Wales Home International then back again and we would score another. My mother came tae pick me up after the game and I recall running up tae her shouting "Celtic won 7-1", she just laughed and thought someone was kidding me on.

My first “real” hun game was a 2-2 tie again over in Govan where big Frank let a last minute shot slip under his body at the Copland Road end, he lived on Copland Road, think that game might have instigated the chant of Haffey, Haffey, Haffey fae them.

Next one after that was the 0-4 going on ten disaster, Paddy Crerand’s last game, I still wasn’t allowed tae go tae these games alone but I sneaked up myself, when my da found out the only reason he never thumped me was because he saw that I had been beat up enough that day.

The trend continued with a 0-2 loss in the Scottish at the same venue, by this time I was working for the nation's largest home builder so I could fgo on my own now, it wasn’t until the 33rd Anniversary of John Thomson’s fatal injury that I witnessed my first hun victory, 3-1 in the pouring rain at Celtic Park when Charlie Gallagher missed a penalty and the Bear had a wonder goal chlaked off, we were signing and dancing for days after that, well that was until the following Wednesday when in true Celtic fashion we lost 0-2 at Methill in the first leg of the League Cup quarters.

That result was overturned in the second leg and we were playing quite well until the final were we lost 1-2 tae the huns again, with a disputed Bobby Murdoch shot which we claimed was over the line and the press in their “wisdom” showed pictures indicating it wasn’t, after that it was all downhill and the following January we once again lost in Govan 0-1 with the Wee Mhan being sent off for retaliation on Tottie Beck and Chopper missing a last minute penalty, little did we know that before the month was out the Big Mhan would be making his way back home again to Paradise.

Platini is Sepp Blatter's man. With Blatter's support he engineered a victory over SB's old foe Lennart Johansson. A major plank in his election platform was a reform of the CL aimed at the middle to lower-ranking nations. Now its time to deliver and the stage is set for a fight. In the background of this struggle is the club v country supremacy argument. Almost time for clubs and associations to choose sides.

    Just flying by.

Re the Platini proposal, this is as much to do with football as synchronised swimming has to do with the construction industry.

Michel Paltini is Sepp Blatter's man, and coupled with Platini's smooth campaign of pretend egalatarianism and accountability, essentially Blatter 'won' power through calling in favours from national associations in return for positions on FIFA, the Olympic association, and awarding of FIFA sponsored tournaments. Spain, Germany, France, and Italy are hugely beholden to Blatter.

England less so, but after the John McBeth fiasco, there is also a symbiotic relationship being nurtured.

Sepp has a big problem in that the Champions league imperfect as it is, presents the a massive hurdle to FIFA's hegemony and his own insatiable avarice.

He still wants a bi-annual world cup and within the next year or so he will return to the table with that.

Till now it was impossible as Johannson's European allies ensured that they remained in the ascendency and that the UEFA cup and CL continued as unimpeachable.

But MP, having been Sepp's sidekick at FIFA, has now created his own organisational structure who are equally beholden to his largesse.

This support allows him to propose a blatter agenda which disingenuously claims to be for the good of European football.

With his appointees returning his investment i.e. those who see personal and organisational benefit (the football associations and not the leagues) it is likely that Blatter's agenda will be ratified.

This will shift the power base away from the G18, The European Forum, and the club structure (not bad) to the national associations, national teams and FIFA (not good).

The football support is already being ignored as political manipulation and power mad dictators, smear on their greasy superficial smiles, dribble their insincere falsehoods, and spit on our game and us behind our backs.

Platini leads the charge and with such luminaries as David Taylor and his beggar thy neighbour sycophants at the SFA and in the Scottish media, watch out for the stamp, stamp, stamp of the approval's rubber stamp, staining the game with its genuflecting cowardice.

If the supporters do not rise against this, then we have may have little option other than to root for the power of the G18 and the megalomaniacs who control them.

If ever there was a case of 'least worse' then this may be it.

This is where the quest for power and the blinkered race for Mammon's millions has brought us.

I was having a chat in the pub last night and basically we agreed that one of the things that made football 'special' as a sport was that small teams can win against big teams. This was especially true in cup competitions.

Now if MP gets his way we could see Scotland being represented by Gretna in the CL qualifiers. Not a pretty sight.

My understanding was that he stood on a platform of making the CL fairer for smaller countries. More champions getting in from more countries and less runners up from big countries.

This proposal does not seem to make any sense at all. Cup winners are not champions, they are cup winners, and often can be smaller teams who have punched above their weight in the competition.

Does this justify them getting into the CL ahead of the second place team in any league?

Not in my opinion it doesn't. If the CL is not soley for Champions then surely it should be for the best teams from each of the countries. Not plucky little Grenta, or worse still Airdrie.

To be honest I can't see this ever coming to fruition, I think the big clubs, G18, will not stand for it. We have already had the usual soundbites from the likes of Frguson, Wenger at al saying that it makes no sense and is not "for the good of the game".

To be honest if UEFA/Michel Platini push this one through then we are a couple of steps closer to the European League we talk about.

I think that Estadio is onto something - this smacks of some unholy alliance with the national football associations to try and restore some prestige to the national cup competition in return for their ongoing support.

Certainly in Scotland and England, the league and the cup are run by different bodies (I assume so in many other countries also?) with the league and the clubs being in the ascendency.

There is no doubt that the cup competitions are now treated with disdain by many clubs who largely field reserves.

From a purely selfish point of view, MP's plan is a very risky scenario for Celtic.

As it is we should always field fringe and reserve players in the LC.It matters not a jot if we lose, but like Arsenal it is a chance to see if the players are good enough.

As we become more used to Europe we need and rely less on domestic cups.
They are fine if you are not doing well in the league, but I would take Rangers winning the Cup double if we win the League every year.

Bryce, 22 entrants come from countries 1-12.

Four teams come from the mini-cup competition for cup winners and six come from the CL qualification rounds, which is open to teams from the smaller leagues as well as teams from the larger leagues who do not get automatic entry into the group stage.

Finishing 13th is a danger, we need to outperform Belgium and Turkey, both of whom are in worse shape than Scotland.

MP is pandering to national FA's with this idea. The French FA have been trying for years to add glamour to the French Cup in order to make lots more money from the tv and sponsors. TF1 shows most of the French Cup games, but since the CL came into being, the Cup has lost it's sparkle and the sponsors are paying accordingly.

The same situation exists in all the Big 5 countries.

By pretending to give something to the minnows, he is in fact boosting the finances of the big guns. More sponsorship cash means bigger payouts to semi-finalists and winners etc.

I hope his idea is kicked out pronto. I thought MP would be a breath of fresh air, but so far his ideas are backward thinking , not progressive. Unless he comes up with something good soon, then many observers in France will lose faith in him and his ability to deliver real change in football.

Btw, Canal Plus in France has just announced that they will be negotiating DOWN their new tv contract up for grabs next year. Currently at 600M € a year, they say it is poor value, as subscribers and viewing figures have not met targets. (They also merged with their only competitor last year.....).

If the cash cow starts to play hard-ball, some French clubs might be in for tougher times ahead.

Instead, we have a fudge which will disproportionately disadvantage countries like Scotland, whilst being only a minor irritant to the big leagues.

    Long time lurker

I am sorry to start on a discordant note but I think also a positive one.

I don’t agree with the support by earlier posters about McBeth.
    Excerpt from McBeth’s speech
“By and large, the four British countries know what fair play is and when we are stepping out of line.

"But, as soon as you hit Africa, it's a slightly different kettle of fish. They're poor nations and want to grab what they can.

"I presume the Caribbean is much the same - they just come at it in a different way."
What’s not racist about what McBeth said?
Even if he confined his comments to his reference to ‘British countries’, these remarks, aside from being patently untrue, would also have been racist – he infers favourable comparison with these British countries as opposed to others as regards their sense of fair play. He also seems to have unwittingly dredged up in his fateful musings that hackneyed old oxymoron, British justice.

The derogatory references to West Indian and African countries were not only racist they were crass.

Surely more points should be gained for winning/drawing in the CL than UEFA cup.

I would also think the qualifying rounds of the CL need looked at.

If they are wanting the best teams through surely a draw where top seed plays bottom seed etc is best.
