Celtic busy creating impressive league stats

After a 38 game league programme last season Celtic recorded a positive goal difference of just 31; champions on an average of less than a goal a game advantage. This season, after eight games, they are 21 goals up, an indication of the remarkable change in style and content from Celtic.

Even the defeat to Hibernian was notable for some fluid football; the opening-day draw at home to Kilmarnock stands alone as a less than inspiring display.

After discussing some less flattering statistics recently the defence looked to have more purpose against Dundee United on Saturday. Inverness and Hearts both created several good chances while losing 5-0 at Celtic Park, but apart from an Artur Boruc save when Jordan Robertson sprung the Celtic offside trap, United, who arrived in Glasgow having won five of their previous six games, never looked like scoring.

Boruc was poise personified when Robertson ran clean through with only the Pole to beat. Boruc didn’t rush forward, nor did he adopt the crouched, arms-spread position, he just stood and stared-out his opponent, waiting on the United player to shoot before diving. The save was made before the shot was taken.

Bring on the mighty misfiring Milan.

Questions, questions, there are more questions than answers :

    - Will Milan come and set up with 1 up front and play for a draw ?

    - Will we set out similarly with 1 up front, switching between 4-5-1 and 4-3-3 ?

    - Will we play Aiden on the right, on the left or behind the attacker ?

    - Will Naka play ?

    - Will JVOH play ?

Defence, imho, picks itself with AB, JJPD, GC, MMcM and LN.

Play Hartley for first 60, keep it tight and then bring on Naka. Is that too conservative ?

Ach, what is the price for Skippy first goal and 1-0 tic ????

I saw the boy being taken away on the stretcher and he was getting oxygen.

The barras are a disgrace as the area outside the toilets/merchandising area are always soaking and never get mopped up before the problem starts. The good lady even split her chin open last year after slipping in that area.

I think it due to the fact that there are two English clubs playing on the same night as the Scottish Champions so we get pushed into the Interactive Sky Extra area or Sky One. I think TFOD had the same thing with there last game.

Tuesday nights are the ITV nights so they show the two other English clubs and this is why TFOD are on Sky tonight as we were two weeks ago.

Big Wavvy Scott and 1-0 is 65/1 with Coral. Funnily enough with Coral there are 4 Celtic players with shorter odds than Scott to be first scorer.

Jan.Majec,Naka and the other Scott. Which im struggling to get my head round.

I'm already completely distracted by the upcoming CL game!

We can't afford to take any risks, and everyone who starts the game must be absolutely 100% fit, physically and mentally. The slightest fitness doubt, or the merest suggestion of not being "in the zone" and a player must be at best on the bench.

Remember though Bhoys, as Roy Walker might say of this AC Milan team: "It's good. But it's not right!"...

And while you're waiting for that clock to tick down the remaining two and a bit days, get a load of this to get "in the zone" yourself:

One for the hairs on the back of your neck.

And for a bit of pre-match atmosphere.

    Agree totally.

It is just that I think that the man who will become chairman has some other "qualities" which shouldn't be allowed within a mile of Celtic Park in any remotely official capacity.

In fact some of his "qualities" would see him in jail,if he wasn't protected by the cloak of "decency" and obscene privelege that comes from being a member of the British Cabinet.

And I just can't ignore some of those "qualities" when it comes to Celtic.

I have to be revolted be his appointment.

And will continue to say so,as long as he has anything to do with our club in an official capacity.

I think Milan will do what they usually do in Europe;which is get the result they want.Don't let their league form slow the pulse or unknot the stomach-when it comes to the CL Milan are wolves in wolves clothing.

I think they will be delighted if we go at them full-pelt from the kick-off,therefore we should confuse and confound them by playing it cautiously for as long as possible;even only playing 1 up front at the beginning[the Gippsland Fhalcon!]

And then when it's 0-0 with fifteen minutes left bring on DR to snatch the vital goal!

    Cue Pandemonium!

We can take comfort from AC Milan's poor form, that doesn't mean it will be any easier but clearly they are not a team on form. When we played them in February they were on a long excellent run which of course peaked in them humbling Manchester United in the San Siro. Early season / early qualification is the time to get them.

Having said all that, it's hard to see how we can beat the reigning European Champions. If we do, it would surely rank as one of our greatest ever victories?

So close to the game and I've still not brought up 'he who mustn't be mentioned' from the AC Milan team. Paul Hartley may have the hardest job in football stopping the MOTM from the World Cup Semi Final and Final of last year. Disrupt him and you go along way to stopping Milan.

I thought the game being shown on Sky One was something to do with cable customers not being able to watch in on interactive as they don't have the facility to do that (Celtic and Rangers games were always on Interactive when 2 other English teams are playing). Someone told me though that Cable customers don't get Sky One, I thought that would have been in any basic package.

I'm not going to see it live anywhere as I've decided to go and see Rush at the SECC instead. I know you all think I'm mad, but to be a bit blase, I've seen AC twice recently and may get the chance to see them in future, but I've not seen Canadas finest before and I'm unlikely to get the chance in the future.

the only thing id say is in todays game why is everyone interested in the boardroom? im only interested in watching a good celtic team get better on the pitch. but when the board would rather put it "in the bank" than spend the money i you and every other celtic supporter has pumped in, it annoys the hell outta me.

porridgeandbananas - unfortuately Sky One is not part of the basic Virgin Media package - it was one of the casualties in the war between Branson and Sky earlier this year. Anyway, I'm not sure why we always have to play second fiddle to the English clubs in the CL when it comes to Sky - I would be very interested to see what the comparitive viewing figures are for each team and would expect that we are higher than most.

Kano - So can someone please explain why he has been given this role with Celtic?

My own reading of it was that maybe it reflects the next stage of our development and building the resources to deal with it. Mr Quinn presided over a period where we needed fiscal responsibility and I think he can look proudly at how that has become. The John Reid / Ian Livingston appointments to me could help add to our armoury with high level political clout (tackling home office restrictions to clubs in UK) with Ian a very capable operator with an eye for figures and expertise for our brand development / communications / Multimedia platform. I suspect the opportunity to have a man who was close to being PM recently would add to our overall profile also.

But let's not overplay it too. He will act primarily as spokesman and hopefully take on Duffield, Europe and any attacks on the club with aplomb. We'll continue to have a very capable CEO in the SSM and a football operation capably lead with Gordon and Tommy at the helm and the emergence of Lennoxtown.

    Just my stab at it.

We can all go on the Timternet and type away til our fingers bleed about the suitability,or otherwise of DJR to be the Chairman, and it will make not the slightest difference.

It suits Dermot Desmond to have him as chairman, and in this decision that is the over-riding interest. As they say at the Oscars the chairmanship was'in his gift'.I'm not aware of any other candidates being discussed, but it's unlikely they would have ticked as many of DDs boxes.

Dermot Desmond owns companies which provide services to airports (including baggage handling and security), so I would think access to John Reids contact book would be invaluable. Gordon 'middle England' Broon made it clear that Reid wasn't wanted, so he had to move on.

All appointments will be viewed good/bad by some. I personally could never reconcile Craig Bellamy in a Celtic short.

Big Wavy,as I said in my reply to Italiabhoy.

He has a list of what may be perceived as qualities for the position, like his fellow appointee Ian Livington.

If that was all he brought to our club,I would be over the moon.

Ian on the other hand has none of the "baggage".

It is like saying,it doesn't matter if you are a wife beater, paedophile or rapist,at least you have a good left foot.

Somehow it just doesn't sit right with me,that he has anything to do with our club,in an official capacity, and it sits even less right with me that we could possibly have Celtic supporters who would ignore his obvious baggage in favour of letting Dermot does what he wants.

If he felt that strongly about home office restrictions on player movement, why didn't he change it when he ran the home office?

Our board members have been recruited, in recent years at any rate, on the basis that their experience and expertise is closely aligned with specific objectives of the club.

For example, Brian Quinn's knowledge of and status within the London financial scene was seen by Fergus as a key element in his aim to build credibility prior to listing the club's shares.

Similarly with the other non-execs, and the more recent exec appointments. I can readily see the advantage of having a BT Director on our board during a time when emerging multimedia opportunities are attractive.

I remain unsure as to why John Reid has been asked to take the Chair at Celtic. Clearly, with a PhD in history, and a career in politics, he has no obvious business acumen to loan the club.

As the club knows it's history, there's not much for JR to add there, and I doubt DD needs much of a campaign manager to see his key policies approved at the next AGM.

In any event, we already have career politico Brian Wilson on the board. Maybe, wee Brian's stepped out of line lately and needs a good whipping?

John Reid is a formidable man and no-one who has held high government office for so long should ever be underestimated. I just can't see what business benefit Celtic have bought with this appointment.

    Unless..

..unless the club are preparing to invade a smaller, talent rich league?

Or maybe, increase passport controls at the turnstyles?

Hey, could it be an attempt to clamp down on the illegal entrants who gain access to our stadium using the minor's brief of a parent and child season ticket?

The only logic this battered bunnet can infer from JR's appointment, is that the club needs to work the local political scene in a big way. Bringing in a big local politician is a good start.

So what's the big gig for JR? Where's the local political objective? Anything to do with Glasgow 2014? If half of what is rumoured is delivered, we might need a local political bulwark right enough.

Big Wavy,as I said in my reply to Italiabhoy.

He has a list of what may be perceived as qualities for the position, like his fellow appointee Ian Livington.

If that was all he brought to our club,I would be over the moon.

Big Wavy - Apologies Kano. I thought it was a genuine request for a list of his skills, thus my response. I've tried to stay clear of the 'baggage' / political debate as I've said all along that as soon as we begin presenting conditions on our new recuits (one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter and all that) beyond the common good of the club then you begin to naturally divide as a result. Not everyone shares your view, nor mine, and indeed some of our support may well be pro-government and pro-labour. You (the big YOU and not Kano) then begin to disregard their leanings as not being 'celtic-minded'. It matters to you and some others and that's absolutely fine. I fear it's one of those circular debates that we'll just have to accept will never unite the support.

If he felt that strongly about home office restrictions on player movement, why didn't he change it when he ran the home office?

Big Wavy - Maybe it wasn't in his interests to do so at the time. He now has different interests and therefore I'd expect him to pursue it from our point of view. Don't see an issue with that.

I read an article a while back, possibly on eTims, that mentioned the fact that one of the companies Dermot owns works in the Airport Secuirty Industry. Retina Scanning and Biometrics etc.

Dermot wants John Reids contacts within the UK and US homeland Security which he would have from his time as Home Secretary.

I'm sure he knows how to chair a meeting or two and is a Celtic supporter so should do a decent job as chairman.

Milan will only be rubbish if we get a result.

We got this nonsense last year, someone said it was the best time we could possibly have met them,I said the best time to meat them is in the pub,cos they are loaded!!

If we get anything from any of our next two games I will be very pleasantly surprised.

I thought when I first saw the games that the first three were going to be the most difficult,I have higher hopes for Lisbon than against Milan.

I am hoping that if Milan do beat us,they will have qualified by the time we go there, and we could perhaps give them a good going over in Milan whilst Shakhtar are drawing with Benfica twice.

We take three points from the two games, both Shakhtar and Benfica only take two points against each other and we win our other two home games.

If we can hope that Benfica and Shakhtar don't manage three points against Milan in total, then we are through.

Then again if everything I say above is wrong, apart from the we are through bit,I will take that too,and say I told you so.

At the time of the draw last year, this was the case. Of the teams we could have faced, they were in the worst position and were suffering from poor form and particularly self esteem due to the calciopoli involvement. By the time the game came along it couldn't have been further from the truth as form, esteem and effort had all improved as they realised they could win the Champions League.

Anyway, none of that applies this year - Milan will have a figure in mind to guarantee qualification and the section for Celtic Park will say '1 point please'. It will be one of the most significant victories of modern times if we stop them doing that!

Firstly, even an under performing Milan are an incredibly difficult hurdle to get over BUT FACTUALLY :

    They are struggling domestically performance-wise...

    Their forwards are misfiring...

They lack zip and confidence around the team....

They looked vulnerable at times at the back against Benfica...

One of their forwards has it so bad he has a bodyguard to protect him against their fans...

Their defence is relatively weakened....maldini and now kaladze oot...

    Their goalkeeper is missing...

I'd be a fool to underestimate them but they do look a 'poorer' team CURRENTLY....

With that in mind, and not underestimating that wee brazilian fella....

    Kano and the Bunnett

There is no requirement for a chairman to be an effective businessman. Many ex-politicians (notably at the businessman end of the spectrum) get non-exec and chair positions.

Clearly DD has an idea that he wants JR to carry out and deliver on; a specific mission.

I think anyone with as much cabinet experience should be able to chair a meeting, use collective rsponsibility and involve the members fully, delivering good governance.

It looks like IL is the man bringing in the additional business skills, although the media development issues must also be reflected.

I am also someone who was against the Iraq folly and what it now represents on a number of fronts, not least the catastrophic loss of life. I am also no lover of tax avoiding capitalists like our majority shareholder.

In order to decide that JR is not a fit and proper person to chair our club you need to be able to conclude that he, personally, was either glad to proceed with the Bush folly or that he had access to information that suggested something different from what was promulgated and ignored this.

I can't see where this is either evidenced or proved? The fact that he continued to serve in government reflects an approach of having influence on the inside. It is not often that we are faced with such dilemmas in life. Do I resign aka Robin Cook on a matter of principle or do I stay in there seeking to influence what emerges? It might just have been a difficult call for some?

The question of being somehow morally or ethically superior in belief, custom or practice as a pre-requisite for sitting on the Celtic Board does not fit comfortably with me since it is both difficult to verify and assess.

The 'blood on the hands' arguement whilst emotive is not necessarily effective. How many politicians, influencers, businesses, employees and people also have 'bloodied hands' through decades of inaction, ineffective sanctions, shady business deals, armaments funding etc etc.

I'm not proposing that JR is a strong virtuous sole who could point to endless works of charity and benevolence, however portaying him as some form of demagogue may not be any closer to the truth.

Everyone should now be eternally grateful!

Something suspicious about that nice East Coast lad of the Manse though. Some might suggest he was hell bent on claiming the centre right agenda from Cameron, being populist, tackling him head on, being belligerent in government, not listening etc. etc.

    Dumbhoy,

I can't disagree with anything you say, but the question remains unanswered; What attributes and expertise is John Reid bringing to the club?

If David Dein had got the job, we would not be debating the appointment. His experience would have been an obvious match to Celtic's requirements. Similarly had we signed Didier Drogba as a centre forward.

Many of us can competently chair a meeting, but that doesn't make us Celtic Chairman. There are many others who can adequately represent the views of the club, although few might measure up against Brian Quinn in that respect.

I agree that there is little to be gained in scampering up to the moral high ground.

Point is; John Reid is not an obvious choice to steer a plc or direct a sporting institution. As a public company, a little indication to the shareholders on the relevance of the candidate to the post is in order.

Until that is given by the club, I will continue to ask; What on earth does John Reid have that Celtic needs?

I thought we had put this controversy to bed.

As you have obviously thrown your weight against Mr.Reid's appointment, let me say this.

Every single objection that you have put forward against his selection as the Chairman of Celticfc, are mere speculative reasons.
Every one of them can be categorized as an opinion.

Opinons in this matter, are just that.
As has been said before,by someone, who's name escapes me,at the moment...

"Opinions are like the attractive girl that one eagerly picks up in the dimly lit bar... but, to one's horror and consternation... after further examination, in the cold light of day... one is... to put it, oh so , delicately..is somewhat dismayed at the transformation for the worse, that has occurred over-night in what is now... evidentially,... the IMAGINED attractions...that you had found in your choice of bed-mate."

    Bottom line.....
"Well it seemed a good idea at the time, Boss!".... said Vito, hopefully. (I know who said that.. Fargo!...snooky)( Yep! sounds like something that he would know about, alright!)

The sensible thing in this case is to wait and see for oneself, how Mr.Reid adapts to his new post.

Then one is prepared to offer a more meaningful opinion of his job performance.

(Makes a wholelotta sense to me!...snooky)( Me to! I am glad that we agree, for once!)

    collie.

    Evening all

Without wishing to prolong the John Reid debate... some have asked what management experience he has. I would submit...

He ran the NHS (Britain's biggest bureaucracy)

He ran the Home Office (widely regarded as the toughest job in government bar PM)

    He ran the Armed Forces

    He ran Northern Ireland

I imagine the negotiating, "soft" skills needed in all these jobs, as well as being constantly under the spotlight whilst he was doing each job, would have prepared him pretty well for running Celtic.

Rumours of the chairman trying to exert overt control on the team and pick the team, forcing signings on the manager. The fans initially refuse to turn on the chairman, remembering where they were before he arrived. A puppet manager is installed, who was previously "director of football".

We can expect a period of high farce to follow, accompanied by a deluge of Lithuanian (or russian) loan signings. Oh, and Lampard and Terry will be sold to Man Utd.

Spurs though boast one of the best players this season imo in Gareth Bale.

Excellent post on the J Reid situ.

The appointment of a Chairman has usually very little impact on supporters but I fear (not hope) that this appointment might be the litmus paper to encourage scenes similar to the one that I will always be embarrassed about, i.e. the booing of B Quinn.

I fear that there must be something else behind this appointment and, if there is, it can only be a financial one as viewed by one person......Dermot Desmond.

Hope I'm wrong and that we see and hear very little of the new Chairman.

Been lurking too long. All work and no cqn and/or golf isn't good for you.

Thankfully I made it to the game on Saturday and what a great feeling to agree with Tinytim. He just stays up the road from me and all this talk of boxing happy clappers like me is worrying.

Aiden was outstanding on Saturday and he is my big hope for Wednesday night.

While big Chris Killen didn't cover himself in glory when he came on, I think guys are a bit quick to judge him on the basis of his substitue appearances. I don't think he's the lean machine he once was(but neither was Mark McGhee and I see him playing a similar role (roll) "He's fat, he's round..." I'd like to see him given a game from the start against Gretna, if not Milan.

Just to lighten the mood, and please tell me if we've gone here before, I had the pleasure of taking Mr Taggsybhoy snr along to the game for his birthday treat on Saturday. We had a grand day from start to finish and even got our photo on the scoreboard. Bumped into Murdo Mcleod at the end to make our day and he signed our programme. Will never hear a bad word about Murdo. 4-2 game gives you a LOT of brownie points!

My Dad took me to my first ever game. The League Cup final of 1969. Hampden North Enclosure. I was about five years old. 1-0 v St Johnstone. Wee Bertie scored with a header in the 3rd minute or something. I've still never seen the goal on tv. In fact, as anyone of my vintage will recall, unless you got on the wall down the front, you had as much chance of seeing the game as Derek Riordan has of getting his hoops dirty.

I had a chat with a Dunfermline supporting mate the other day and he was on about his first game and it was at Celtic Park around 70/71. I amazed him, and myself, by instantly remembering it.

I'm sure it was a Scottish Cup game. Celtic were 1 down to the pars deep into the second half, kicking towards the old Celtic end (with no cover). What happened will always stay with me. Celtic were attacking when the ball headed for the corner flag next to the jungle. The ball hit the corner flag and went for a corner rather than a shy (as we old timers say). We scored from the corner. The game finished 1-1 and I'm sure we did the pars in the replay as we won the cup in 70-71.

So, can anyone please enlighten me on the above game? Tinytim, you're much older than me :-)

Also, first game. How was it for you?

I agree. While we each may have our own take on his departure and his petted lip, I think most would agree that on his day he was class. I always felt we were keeping him warm for a top side, bigger than Villa. He just looks a grade below so many. Problems in his head possibly, but this was him playing for 25/30 minutes in his favoured centre-mid position.

As Noel said the taxi may be on hold for Jol, but his team plays decent stuff. Michael Dawson is a weak link at centre-back and £16m on Darren Bent may yet prove to be his transfer folly but trailing 4-1 at home and clawing back to 4-4 at least shows courage.

Clean-sheet statto's will know that it's the first time Villa have scored away this season and that Spurs, dodgy England keeper and all, haven't had a clean sheet in 36 matches, home and away. Newcastle too, haven't had an away clean sheet in a year. Money can't buy you love.

This campaign against our former manager is now firmly in the public conciousness after GG newspaper column today.
It is time our board stood up and be counted on this matter.
The band at Ipox could clearly be heard playing the tune at the game against Stuggart, as this is the official club band do we assume that Rankers endorse this song.

Paul67 I'm not sure that you want this discussed on the site as I haven't seen any remarks from you re it. However it is now at the stage where this chant is being sung at almost every away ground in the country.

Lots of emotional comment on the appointment of John Reid as Celtic Chairman over the weekend and on going. John Reid has been a public figure and part of the government of this country for the last 10 years, holding 2 of the 3 largest posts outwith the Prime Ministership as well as the NHS, Defence, Scotland, Northern Ireland and a few others (10 in total I think).

Like all politicians, he is of course 'public property'. I personally have never liked him despite being one of the few remaining fans of his old boss. The decisions made by this government will keep more important bodies like CQN busy for many many years so I don't think there's any benefit in us getting into it all here.

I dislike when we start to blur this line between Celtic being 'more than just a football club' (which we are) and second guessing Brother Walfrid's very reason for founding the club.

Dermot Desmond has been a figure in our club for the past 10 + years with increasing power. In that time he has never once, even in a miniscule way used Celtic as some overall business strategy or plaything. I often hear he is using Celtic simply as a business interest, given his usual rate of return on business investments it doesn't fit with the rest of his portfolio.

I'll continue to question John Reid's personality until he convinces me otherwise but I'll have to stand up (for the champions) for Dermot Desmond on this one. He's no David Murray, who truly does treat Rangers in this manner.

Right, that's what happens when you go away for the weekend. From now on I shall mostly be worrying about Andrea Pirlo.

*Yip recall it well. I was just hame fae the colonies with a wife and two wee weans so gemmes were hard tae come by then, that morning your talking about I was at 10:00 Mass at Our Lady and St Marks complete with message bags and Evan Williams' brother and mother in law gave me a lift up the road, Evan was a good friend of my late brother and both his wife and brother in law had been in my class at St Marys although at different times, such is life at a school with 66 pupils in the one class.

As I said I didnae make the gemme due tae financial constraints of buying a house and rearing wee weans at the same time. Listening tae the gemme on a trannie that Mrs TT had recently got for her 21st it was obvious that we had played the out of jail card, a bit like a gemme a couple of years later played on a Sunday due tae the power workers or miners strike, canae remember right now against murderwell at CP where we fortunately tied 2-2 after our midfield was bossed by Bobby Graham and so ontae Fir Park whch is a great venue for night time fitba with Ian Da Vinci Code in the dug out and Jim Brogan bossing the aforesaid Graham we won 1-0.

Got off track a bit there but after the first Pars gemme Big Jock made it abundantly clear who had let the side down and said I've not picked my side for the replay but there's one player who definately won't be playing, on the Wednesday night we won the replay 1-0 and the goalscorer was Harry Harry who had a Regi Blinker on the Saturday.

Nex day my da said tae me the Big Mhan's a genuis he knows how tae play the press.

I can't make my mind up on the John Reid appointment at all. He clearly has the mettle to handle the intense scrutiny he will receive as Celtic Chairman & i've always found him quite an articulate man in front of the cameras, however i fully understand those who oppose his appointment from a moral point of view. I'm unconvinced myself.

As for these backward scumbags who are attempting to blacken the name of Big Jock Stein across Lanarkshire - a non catholic working class hero, who as well as making Celtic the first British Team to win the European Cup, was a great family man, was actively involved in helping those injured during the Ibrox disaster & more pertinently - died in the dug out tryig to lead his own national team to the World Cup Finals. I find it absurd that neither Celtic Football Club nor the SFA see it fit to condemn this publicly.

On a brighter note i have a rather strange feeling that we're going to do well on Wednesday & i think the injury to Venegoor could ironically work in our favour as we've been forced into going with a 4-5-1 formation. McDonald & a five man midfield with Nakamura or McGeady playing just behind.

I'm sorry if anyone has given this answer previously as to why the game is being shown on Sky 1 as opposed to Sky Sports. The answer is that Sky are a bunch of evil bar stewards. They have been in a dispute with Virgin Media since Virgin took over NTL. Virgin refused to pay a price rise for some Sky Channels so Sky withdrew Sky Sports News, Sky One and some other channels. Virgin customers can buy Sky Sports 1,2,3 and Extra but can't watch thew games that require to access the Interactive part of Sky Sports Extra. Celtic are a big draw and they are usually shown on Sky Sports 2 or you have to access them on the Interactive Extra Channel.I've seen them screen a poxy game between two foreign teams on Sky Sports Extra but show Celtic on Sky Sports Extra Interactive. They are punishing Virgin Media for badmouthing them last year after the fall out. I think it could be challenged in court if someone was a mind to do so. They call their channels Sky Sports channels and sell them to their customers as such so it's not really cricket to show a football match on a non-sports channel. I'm beelin' at this decision in principle but I've got a ticket for the game.

Celticlover, on the appointment of the new chairman? I have been busy since the news broke and have missed the debate here. John Reid has a hard act to follow. I expect he will be a different proposition for Peter Lawwell, and others, than Brian Quinn. There seems to be a suggestion that he will be a proxy for Dermot Desmond, which I think is highly unlikely.

Ni, I don’t know how to approach this one.

I have spoken to those who were close to the situation at the time and I have the story, but I am reluctant to have these types dictate our agenda.

I have also spoken to the club and suggested that it would be a huge mistake for Celtic to go on the record on this. It is one thing for CQN to be dragged into it, but this is no more than a scurrilous manifestation of sub-life, Celtic should not give it any publicity.

I may write about the time, what happened and what was done. Our man acted with complete integrity, but the story is more complex than you might first imagine. You can perhaps understand my reticence to get involved.

Really not sure how to proceed, a simple record of the facts might put the story straight, but putting the story straight will not change any element of this campaign.

It is a difficult situation it ill continue to grow and grow. By all means come up with a responding chant and let's give it pelters but we live in a society that must surely have some recourse to the law and therefore the police to do something about it.

If it was Allah or the Pope or the Chief Constable that was being maligned something would be done.

If Celtic take 3 points from Gretna at Fir Park on Saturday – highly probable – and Rangers lose to Hibs at Ibrox – very possible – wouldn’t it be nice to go to Ibrox after the international break with a 3 point lead over them, as well as the added bonus of seeing them drop to 3rd place?

Not that I am in any way pessimistic about going to Ibrox, but it would be great to go there knowing that they would need to beat us just to go behind us on goal difference, rather than going out in front.

Even if Hibs were to get a draw on Saturday, it would leave us 2 points clear going into the big one.

    Come on the greens.

*thanks Paul for sharing this with us, I did not doubt the club one bit and you have confirmed what I felt was the reason for the silence.....give them enough rope etc.

Many years ago I was at a function where this despicable creature that Jock kicked in the chorus and verse was at.

It was to promote the Centenary celebrations and the club I was in was in good voice, 3 phunters there were not drinking, the gentleman I was with who had taken the pledge, me because it was during Lent and a Celtic Director who was a credit to the club, we spoke in length about the Renton connection with Celtic and other matters such as why Kenny and Charlie Nick left.

Anyway this disgrace tae Celtic Football Club who I had shook hands with was pouring it back big style and did NOT show the class that a Celtic official should have.

What I don't understand is why the decent Rangers fans don't drown out these scumbags with booing.

I can only imagine how sick I'd feel if it was Celtic fans coming out with a comparable chant.

As it is, I feel bad because they are (going on general appearances) my fellow human beings, and I just boggle at how they can deliberately do something that would potentially cause a dead man's family such pain.

But if they were wearing Celtic scarves and singing about Jock Wallace - I'd be completely mortified. And I would trust that the club would take action to have the perpetrators banned from home games. To my mind this has reached a stage where Rangers, not Celtic, need to take action. The longer the Rangers board ignores it, the more complicit they become.

I feel the board should treat this with the contempt it deserves. If the chant continues to spread than it just underlines the level of Scottish sectarianism. If our fans want to do something about it,then ,as I suggested before, JOIN IN.In fact perhaps we should start it.Take the initiative.Put them on the back foot.Cheers all.

Regarding the BJK chant. The ball is now squarely at the feet of the Rangers board. They have been silent and allowed this festering sore to grow and grow to a point where pseudo official groups like the Blue Order and the Rangers band have joined in and started the chant. The longer they ignore it the further their already plummetting reputation will fall, if it is possible to fall any more. It could be stopped overnight by a statement from Rangers condemning the chant and stating that anyone joining in will be ejected and banned for life.

Hoopla is correct, the longer they stay silent the more complicit they become.

After all the talk of late about Celtic's defensive deficiencies, we are actually on the cusp of making a bit of Champions League history tomorrow night.

I quote from the BBC website: "Celtic are without a win in their last four CL matches and have failed to score in the last 3. They've not lost in their last six at home, keeping a clean sheet in all six. The record for most successive CL home matches without conceding a goal is seven."

A clean sheet tomorrow and we equal an all time Champions League record.

...I presume they (and the record they cite) refer to Group games and beyond only, as we have both scored and conceded in our game against Spartak Moscow.

Phew! Lucky break there then! Celtic not only rescue Britain from years of grinding right-wing populist oppression, but prevent untold wars, disharmony, abolition of elections (ok he doesn't quite go that far) and secures the future vote of a journalist for labour.

Everyone should now be eternally grateful!

Something suspicious about that nice East Coast lad of the Manse though. Some might suggest he was hell bent on claiming the centre right agenda from Cameron, being populist, tackling him head on, being belligerent in government, not listening etc. etc.

Good to know though that your happy with the descriptions of Lanrkshire offered by this 'impartial' source.

Couple of points: said article was one the first shown on Google when I searched. Linking it to cqn was probably unwise, but it provided a career resume of sorts... I don't vouch for every word of it (surely we should be able to link to particular articles without emphasising that each time), and I don't share the journo's opinions (is any journalist impartial really?) on Gordon Brown or the Labour party.

Apart from 2yrs within sunny Glasgow's boundaries, I've never stayed anywhere other than Lanarkshire. The political scene here has never struck me as healthy - the description he uses seems reasonable to me.

Sorry if I p'd you off Dumbhoy. I'm going to take my own advice on this whole subject and drop it totally for now. Too nervous thinking about the Milan game to explain myself properly in any case.

    Hail hail.

Only one subject should be paramount in all our heads at the moment and that's the fact that there is one sleep til the big game...adrenalin a pumping. Here therefore are today's "more questions than answers" which are keeping me vexed :

How is the game NOT a sell out yet ?

    What's the latest on Naka's injury ?

Does the defence pick itself ?

Will Paul Hartley, Massimo Donati and Scott Brown all play ?

Should Aiden play 'a la san siro' behind Skippy as our front two ?

    And finally.....

Will the pies be upgraded before tomorrow night in response to the latest survey results ?

Could you not pass your analysis to one of the press to put the record straight? I also feel if the chanting and banners continues at Ibrox, a journalist should ask the question to the Rangers officials at one of their press converence. This would force them to address this issue on record.

    Hi McManus69,

I feel the thing the most ardent follow follower wants from us at the moment is a reaction to this 'campaign' which is clearly prominent on the basis that their obvious odious sectarian chanting is under the spotlight.

Personally, my wish would be for us to ignore them, go along to Ibrox later this month and hump them rotten, singing football songs (90 minutes of Willie Maley would be fantastic) and watching them squirm in their seats as we move further away from them, both on and off the field. Let's be honest, the journos are unlikely to put the club under the spotlight and the chant / song is a favourite amongst the sickos cos it's easy to chant, in a stock, aitken and waterman sorta way and has only three words to it. An easy recipe for the Neanderthals and will only grow louder if we are seen to react to it.

Appreciate the above is not a palatable course of action for many but I feel there is an inevitablity about the Rangers crowd at the present time, with a combination of potential failure on the field and a continued presence off it with the nazi saluting, defiant, vile chanting of a sectarian nature only a whiff away. Would a ban, points deduction or a shutting down of their ground really be beyond belief in a season where trophies, once again, were a rare commidity in the blue room ??

I don't think there can be any doubt that football and other sports stadia must be high on the list of targets given the population by area. Perhaps we also tell ourselves that given the social and political perception of Celtic that we could draw some modicum of comfort that when any 'list' was drawn up we might not feature highly. Delusional? I don't know.

However, any debate on that can be quashed by this appointment. Your post is chilling, but undeniably worth consideration.

No need to worry though, we've got 'Protectevent' and 'Rock Steady' on our side. No contest.

Posted this on the last thread by mistake:

For the purists among us ( which, I presume, is all of us), tomorrow evening we have the chance to honour the player who epitomises for me how to play the game the Celtic Way: George Connelly.

George imo was The outstanding player among the lies of Danny, Kenny Dalglish and Davie Hay ( and I know that that is saying something!).

I well remember the night he entertained us with keepie-uppie. I think it was when we were playing Dynamo Kiev. Up and down the pitch from the old Celtic End and back. Nae bother at aw. He was about 15 at the time.

What I remember best is his sheer passing ability. 40+ 50+ yards no problems at all right on to someone's toe.

Probably his most important contribution was in the Leeds Und games, although the goal I rmeember best was the one he scored in the Final against rangers, when he mugged captain blood and slotted it home like a natural goal scorer, which he probalby was, although he was THE ball playing cetre half.

Great memories on a day when the nerves are already jangling.

PCS hoping for a bit of magic from Aiden McGeady tomorrow night.

Fellow Celts this is not our problem. It is a massive and embarrassing problem for Rangers.

Leave Rangers to wallow in their institutionalized hatred which is even aimed at Protestants- just as long as they have something to connect them to Celtic.

Some claim it breaks no laws. Others may believe that scum chanting this filth are likely to create at the very least a breach of the peace.

If the low life who have attacked Celtic FC and the Catholic population for more than a century can defile a dead Pope then surely we should know they have the darkness and infirmity of mind to demean Scotland's greatest manager.

Our board and football club should not dignify the abhorrent, sub-human taunts of the twisted minds in the Rangers camp with a reply.

This is a problem that Rangers FC must address if they care anything about what is left of the already tattered reputation of their football club.

Celtic FC should not leave the slopes of the high moral ground to publicly debate this matter with morons whose crudity emanates in the gutter and below.

The fact that the Blue Order and the Rangers band join in this filth speaks volumes for David Murray and the men who run Rangers.

We the Celtic fans should point this out to men and women of reason when ever we can but frankly I would rather have a debate with the devil himself than enter into a public discussion with these vile cretins.

As for a response for Celtic fans rather than our board I think a simple chant of "shame...shame.... shame" would sum up the feeling os most decent men, women and children in Scotland.

Believe me this latest abomination will lead Rangers further down the slippery slope to oblivion....

It is the vilest attack I have seen since Leeds scum taunted the Munich dead of Manchester United....

I pray Rangers suffer the same fate that has befallen Leeds.

One of the attractions of the BJK 'song' to the Pondlife is that it allows them to pollute the planet with their foul cacophony without running the risk of being criticised for being'sectarian'.

    TontineTim, you are welcome.

McManus69, the press have been helpful to me and supportive of our feelings on this issue, but I have logically thought this one through with two of the more influential media figures, both of whom knew and worked with our man:

A statement of fact could be issued, which will provide more information on the subject, however this information will be disregarded by those who offer an alternative view.

Issuing the statement of fact publicises the campaign, allows the facts to be disputed on a wider scale and fulfils the agenda of those who started the campaign.

The object of a smear campaign is not to search for truth, it is have your smear reach as far as possible. Press involvement would achieve this result.

    Good post.

Rather than: "Shame, shame, shame," though, I think the Celtic support should drown them out with: "Jock Stein, Jock Stein, Jock Stein …".

The man deserves it. His memory is worth protecting in this way.

Wouldn't say the same for Willie Waddell.

I don't want to get into a tit for tat thing about this. The Gospel is very clear on the fate of anyone who abuses children. One instance is one too many. Celtic were tainted by the Torbett conviction, by association, and we cannot get away from that.

To claim, without any evidence, as far as I have been able to read, that Jock Stein was somehow complicit is a nonsense. I think this will backfire on Rangers.

For example, everyone has seen the video on YouTube in which Willie Waddell gives a wry laugh and points out that if Rangers don't win, their fans go home and beat their wives.

Domestic abuse is a serious issue too, Blue Order. In this case, your manager really does seem to have been something of an apologist for it.

Any thoughts, Rangers? Any T-shirts? Any three-note 'tunes' from your 'band'? Any chants? Any condemnation?

    Or Rosenborg..

My old, fading, slightly foxed Umbro training top still fits where it hits so I don't need the full Superstore make-over yet.

As for your point about the use and abuse of the Season ticket moneys,I thought our transfer budget is directly related to our ECL revenue, either real or potential.
