Milan must learn they are a long way from Italy

It is not often that the reigning European Champions have visited Celtic Park on competitive business, but Milan do so tonight, looking for their first goal at the ground in what will be their third visit in just three years and four days.

There can be few more dangerous teams in European football, but they face a Celtic team with something to prove.

An abject performance in Donetsk blighted what was a promising start to the season. If this fluid, skilful, Celtic team have substance as well as style to offer, tonight is a perfect opportunity to prove so.

The home game against Spartak Moscow did not always look promising. Spartak enjoyed the upper hand during two periods of the game, and demonstrated the kind of passing we are sure to see from Milan tonight, but Celtic endured, and, with considerable help from the support, won back control.

I would have given anything to have played for Celtic in a game such as this. Those fortunate enough to take the field on our behalf must know the importance of their performance. They represent Celtic, they represent you and me, they represent an entire community of people reaching every corner of the globe.

They must win tonight. We must be unrelenting in our support and encouragement of the players, no matter how the game flows, or individual performances pan out. Milan must know they are a long way from Italy.

Beat the European Champions, Celtic, I expect nothing less.

Time to concentrate on the football, I have a sneaking suspicion that we will play 4-1-4-1 with Hartley in a holding role with Naka and Aiden available to support McDonald up front. Anyway thats the formation I would use tonight.

    Come on The Hoops!

Fancy us for a one goal victory!

    Hail Hail!

Good call Paul,it is going to take everything from everybody involved.

Said before this started that I wasn't expecting to have any points after three games.

Not so sure now.Have the same feeling I had before the Spartak away game, sneakily confident.

Never had it for the Spartak home game and was dreading Shakhtar.

    But maybe the night.

    Maybe it is time....

    Paul, this is so true.

During every great European night at Celtic Park (such as when the CL anthem is played, or YNWA belts out) there is a moment when I feel priveliged to be one of 60,000 present.

And then I imagine how awesome it must feel to be one of the 11 who carry the hopes and dreams of millions.

Hope Gordon Strachan plays one up, McDonald with two guys supporting, from Naka then McGeady when he comes on for Naka,Donati Hartley and Brown we have plenty options, and with Hartley and Brown in the engine,do we play five at the back?Or one in front of the four, who will it be but if that is the way he goes.

    Is Sno fit?Is Doumbe fit?

Would he play Caldwell in the hole in front of the back four?Or Hartley.

    Questions,questions.

Been away for a few days and not yet caught up with the posts. Did see enough however to note that the ususal suspects are taking a good result by Rangers and using it to batter Celtic, although the connection escapes me.

Rangers deserve great credit for their result last night, and only the very churlish would deny them that.

However are we not the team on top of the league?

Have we not qualified and are embroiled in the Champions League campaign with some of the cream of the continnent?

Are we not scoring golas for fun?

Personally I would much rather have a season like this were being champions really will be an achievement by coming out on top of a group of good teams.

This Rangers team is not pretty but it is well organised and strong.

Hibs are capable of turning in a good string of results, and I still stand by my comment of a few months ago when I stated they could finish second this year.

Don't wirte of Hearts and Aberdeen just yet, and as we've painfully experienced the other teams are all capable of causing an upset now and again.

So I say great!...at last a competitive and challenging league for us to give everything to win.

If you want a stroll in the park every year like last year then go and steal lollipops from babies.

I like my football competitive and exciting.

    Mon the Champions!

very disappointing board today, some outrageous statements made.
Saddens me that a statement such as "To be honest, I'd rather have jim Torbett on the coaching staff than John Reid as Chairman. I mean that seriously." can be made without anyone pulling it up as unforgivable.
using bold and big words doesnt wash with me i'm afraid and that statement above says more about the writer.
Now onto the football, it is a football blog afterall, must admit after the john reid appointment didnt read this blog for days as new the sanctimonious clap trap that would be spouted by the usual suspects.
Crying out for a 4-5-1 tonight and huge performances all round, lets back the team tonight and not panic if we're not beating the european champiopns after 20 minutes or, god forbid they have some possession or, whisper it, attempts on goal.
I know its not the celtic way (among the current support) but getting whipped up into a frenzy at the merest inkling of possession for milan and demanding gung ho attack wil serve no purpose.

As for the game last night, sure edward will be happy and im sure his posts have increased in volume from say his teams previous 2 premier league away encounters, but as far as im aware the sfa havent yet changed the rules to also award league points for champs league games.
Therefore, we are still top of league, still got the better defensive and scoring records and still the champions, a win on foreign soil in a different competition as no effect other than to improve the coefficient for our country.
Said at the time of the "group of death" stuff that i knew which group id rather be in, it wasnt ours thats for sure and nothing i have seen changes this.

C'mon the hoops, hopefully masimo has learned from saturday that a step over and going on the outside of defender is not as effective as the pass to a better positioned team mate, who knows we might even score from it!

    Afternoon all,

Tonight the first lines in a new Celtic book will be written and that book will be finished in 2040 when the player is 40 years old.

Tonight he is seven and this is his first ever Celtic match. He has lain awake all last night as his fitful restless imagination has turned somersaults, dreaming of holding his dad’s hand, walking up Kerrydale street, cheering as the players arrive, and then entering the stadium for the first time to take his place in a seat and remember to his final day his first sight of the holy ground, of Paradise, of Celtic Park.

He has dreamt as every single one of us has of the team being short and of him being the only one who has had the foresight to bring his boots; of coming on as the team are ‘backs to the wall’; of not only dramatically clearing a goal bound strike but of breaking forward like a gazelle to connect first time with a cross field pass and to see the oppositions net billow as the ball, from his foot, from his dream, from his soul lift the rigging up to heaven and 60,000 Tims rise as one and call his name.

But now the dream is over and as he enters the ground, he discovers for the first time that his dream of the noise, of the ambition, of the support, and the atmosphere didn’t even scratch the surface.

The teams appear, the champions league anthem rings out, and then the crowd of 60,000 become as one and an unstoppable will becomes a tornado of attack.

As he stands there dizzy with hope, eyes sparkling with laughter and twinkling with a love suddenly realised, he finds the happiness of a home-from-home and knows without a doubt that one day he will play on this apron of magic, he will make the dramatic save, and he will score the majestic winner.

Where else could he possibly want to play, what other team could he play with, and what other support, club, and history would he want to represent?

Win lose or draw, it’s in out hands to ensure that this dream comes true!

So everyone everywhere, let’s write those first few lines for that laddie, and in 33 years time let's read the completed book and once more remember tonight and our contribution to another 'Lifetime in Paradise'.

    Hail Hail

Estadio (off to the Whistlin' now)

What is going on with this site?

Some people are needing to take reasoned/rationalised steps away from the computer and journey towards their doctors or analysts.

Is the above going to grab or set the agenda? (No matter how traumatic the subject may be)

There is a time and place for everything, and I can't help feeling this site at around 3 hours to kick off on a Champion's League night is quite simply never going to be it.

    Let's move on people.

great article and a good rallying cry.

Been in a planning meeting all day so not had a chance to view the blog but seems some strong views.

Anyway just waiting for my lift to the game and i can't wait hopefully we can get a draw out of this but no shame in defeat to the euro champions.

    Everyone enjoy the game

    Feeling very pessimistic about tonight.

The defence has been too wide open even against SPL opponents for any optimism against Champions of Europe, and TFOD's result last night puts us under even more pressure. Please God, give us a decent result.

I said after Spartak game that Lennon could have still offered something playing behind Brown and Donati in games like tonight.

Midfield 5 and 1 up looks like our only hope.

    Hail hail

Hiro,Neil wis dun two seasons ago.Ad man mark Kaka with Brown.

Last night's reaction by some did not surprise me,funny how the passing of a few hours lessens the impact, makes us less fearful, more hopeful. What matters is what we do.
    Good rallying call Paul.

Good to see the Bold bhoy back.

Forget the Champions league theme this is always does it for me.

    Pdiddy & Victim's Sister...

I'm sorry my comments hurt you. My intention was not to seek to diminish the severity of abuse of any sort.

To my mind, and the minds of many others, both men - Torbett and Reid have ruined many, many lives. John Reid has the blood of hundreds of thousands on his hands. His crimes are no less severe because we can't see them.

This being said, my comment regarding having Torbett at the club was crass and ill considered. I can only offer you both my sincere apologies and my assurance I'll do my best not to be so insensitive in the future. I know that will make little difference, but I hope you will accept it's sincere.

    /p
