Strachan press conference on Milan and Gretna

Gordon Strachan was in a particularly robust mood when facing the media today. He explained Jiri Jarosik’s inclusion against Milan was down to the players height and physicality, something Strachan had in mind when planning for the game two weeks ago.

Gordon was reluctant to single out individuals, “I thought they all did well.

“When they could not play football, they worked hard.”

When asked where beating Milan ranked in his career achievements he said simply, “I’ve had worse nights”, perhaps not for the first time thinking back to one in particular.

While the Milan victory was still being relished, everyone at the club are clearly looking forward to meeting Gretna on Sunday. Strachan said, “We played Dundee away from home, then Dundee United, who have an excellent defensive record, then the game the other night and we gave each team the respect they deserve.

“If you watched our games this year, we treat everyone with great respect.”

Jean-Joel Perrier-Doumbe suffered an achilles injury on Wednesday and will find out the extent of the damage in the next few days. Mark Wilson had an operation yesterday and will be out of contention for 6-10 weeks. A series of minor bumps and bruises and continuing injures to Zurawski, Vennegoor of Hesselink and Caddis might see a number of changes for Sunday.

Aiden McGeady said, “There is still a buzz about the place but we know we have a big game coming up against Gretna.

“To beat the European Champions speaks fo itself. I would think everyone would have been happy with the draw, but the win was great.

“It’s one fo the best results we have ever had as a football club.

Fans also vented their outrage on Milan websites. One wrote: "How much longer do we have to put up with this circus clown Dida? What an insult to AC Milan."

Another complained: "If he is not gifting goals or making huge clangers then he is falling to the ground like a third-rate actress."

I heard Brian Quinn's comments the morning afer the Milan victory, where he pointed out Dida's behaviour in relation to the pat on the chin.

Now I read AC are saying that they have made no formal complaint about the game, but don't want it turning into a Dida witchhunt or it to be made out to be an AC Milan issue.

Given the conciliatory comments from AC Milan immediately after the final whistle, I wonder whether BQ's comments were necessary and whether they have now led to the slight change in stance by AC Milan?

    Sean South,

Believe me I'm in no CQN cliques, have never met anyone from the blog or have any personal vendettas against you. It just grates on me when people constantly criticise my club, usually with nothing to back up their claims other than a personal dislike of our manager or something equally ridiculous.

I answered a question you put to the blog last week regarding why we hadn't signed two centre halfs that Newcastle signed for an astonishing £25,000 per week wage. It may interst you to know that neither of them played in their first team last week at centre half. Cacapa wasn't even quoted and Beye was assigned to play right back, making way for Taylor and Rozenahl. It may also interest you to know that this isa Newcastle team who haven't kept a clean sheet in over a year at home!!!

It's not easy this managerial lark.

    Bryce Curdy,

I would reckon there can't be too many clubs of our stature who can carry three specialist right backs in their squad. Surely 2 and a player who can fill in if necessary would be the norm. I mean Man Utd have Neville and Brown with O'Shea able to fill in. We have Gary Caldwell who for my money seemed to be alrighton Wednesday at it, after all he did win the corner that lead to the winner from there, he also set up a goal at Dundee from there if memory serves me right.

A wee aside to all those who like to praise Walter Smith's superior tactical nous compared to our own Gordon Strachan.

In 20 CL games under Walter Smith, Rangers have won 5 and have never gone past the group stages.

Gordon has won 4 out of 10 including 2 clean sheets in 180 mins against the eventual winners and qualified for the last 16.

He's not done too badly if you ask me.

You told me your source said they took a normal supply to the final, but forgot to forgot to take any extra in case there was a replay.

There was a replay, after Bayern Munich equalised at the death in the first game and Atlético lost it 4-0. Now we know why.

I think the more interesting stat is that Markus Merk was the referee in the Semi Final of two years ago when Shevchenko had a good goal disallowed causing Milan a place in the final.

At least that's what I read the other day.

Given his performance the other night I wasn't aware that Markus Merk was German for 'Kenny Clark'!

    Hi Paul,

This is more a question for the ex pro's on the site. After a game like the other night in a huge crowd with intense atmosphere, how do you adjust and give the same level of commitment if your next game is against Gretna in what could be a very low crowd? Is this where the manager comes in to it or do players not really have a problem?

On the other hand though to try and deflect the blame or suspicion on to a Rangers supporter was a bit silly. Mike & Danny

Have to say, I'm in agreement with what Brian Quinn did.

To expand on what Kano & Paddy (& myself) said earlier, the best thing that happened was Dida doing what he did. It deflected a lot of the attention away from Celtic's failings.

BQ was merely making sure that it was in the public domain so that any disciplinary body would see that Dida made it look worse than it actually was.

I don't reckon for one second that AC Milan will not change their strategy. They're already trying to take the moral high ground... Milan rally around Dida

“Milan’s way of behaving is determined by the club and the club therefore will not make a formal complaint.

“We have more class than that – I had hoped this behaviour would be appreciated but however they now seem to be making a Milan player out to be the guilty party.

Sorry, but a Milan player is already a guilty party!

Celtic have admitted their guilt and punished THEIR guilty party already! Have Milan?

Right, but Brian Quinn also mentioned the "fantastic relationship" that exists between Celtic and AC Milan.

I would not like to see UEFA make an example of both parties. The more severe the punishment for Dida the more severe it will be for us.

Everyone could see Dida's antics, it was not necessary for Quinn to comment.

Just like to add my congratulation to the team on their performace the other night.
For those who think that the unfortunate events are simialr to the protester at Ibrox last season details of sanction below

    From BBC

Rangers have been fined 10,000 Swiss francs (£4,230) for the pitch invasion that interrupted their Uefa Cup tie with Maccabi Haifa on 2 November.
A lone pro-Palestinian protestor ran on to the field at Ibrox and attempted to chain himself to the goalposts.

The European governing body punished Rangers in May when a verdict of not guilty regarding discriminatory chants from fans was overturned.

Rangers have decided not to appeal against the latest fine.

Having been temporarily drawn into the ranks of the torture em, flog em and hang em brigade, after a calming down period I can't help but feel that the pitch invader is the perfect candidate for restorative justice. We hear a lot of how the most effective punishments involve bringing the perpetrators face to face with their victims. In this case I was thinking that we the Celtic fans are the victims and it would be interesting to see a lifetime ban temporarily lifted in order to let this buffoon onto the centre circle at the next European night to publicly apologise to the support. The inevitable reaction would, I am sure, have much more resonance than a few hours community service, and leave any would be future pitch invaders under no illusion as to the results of their actions. Having said that, having him face up to the “victim” Dida once again to atone for his actions would also be a must see spectacle.

I'm hoping that punishing us too heavily would be seen as going along with Dida's theatrics. But if they were to punish Dida at the same time they could be seen as being even handed. Which is why I'm happy enough for them to ignore Dida. I don't think Quinn sort of calling for Dida to be punished helps our case.

Going strictly by the letter of the law I'm not sure Dida broke any rules as I don't suppose simulation covers spectators.

    Antsman,

I think Shaktar beating Benfica is not a terrible result for us, we now have the double header v Benfica in which I reckon 4 possibly 6 points is not inconceivable, I also think Shaktar may take 4 points from Milan certainly they must be favourites to take all three points at home.

It could leave us having to play Shaktar at home with them more or less through, leaving us and Milan fighting for 2nd place.

I would take that right now.

I'm sure Milan will have won the group by the time we arrive in the San Siro. Italian teams (of this ability) have the qualification process down to a fine art. Had Shaktar been in the position we were the other night I am sure they would not have won the game. As I said, I don't expect them to beat Milan at home.

Look at the European Championship Qualifying process, a few weeks ago they were staring elimination. Now? They're almost home and hosed!!!

Match Benfica over two legs and it's between us and Donetsk!

  • At 05/10/07 15:21, Bryce Curdy said…

bambi - Gary Caldwell had an excellent game on Wednesday, as did an entire defence which I have been quick to malign in the past.

In saying that, 15 minutes or whatever at right back without costing us a goal does not mean he can properly cover that position. He was played there last season on several occasions and struggled. It is likely that he will have to play there for the remaining CL group games as well as an important trip to Ibrox. And if he does prove me wrong, what happens if he gets injured or suspended? Same question re Lee Naylor. It would not be a surprise to see either / both picking up a number of soft bookings from our impartial referees.

2 players for a specialist position is NOT enough. It is asking for trouble. This is not me being clever after the event, but an opinion I stated on CQN a couple of weeks ago.

I can see the group ending with three teams very close. OK, trying to predict the next three sets of matches is a mugs game but here goes:

    Benfica Celtic X
    Milan Shakhtar H

    Celtic Benfica H
    Shathtar Milan X

    Celtic Shakhtar H
    Benfica Milan A

    That would leave the table:

    Celtic 10
    Milan 10
    Shakhtar 8
    Benfica 1

Assuming Shakhtar will beat Benfica at home in the last game we would need to get something in Milan. But by my calculations a draw would allow us and Milan to go through - would that be stretching the friendship between the two clubs too much???

There are so many ifs and buts here. But I think what this little scenario does show is that we need to take something from Benfica. One point would pretty much put them out of things and then we could finish the job at home.

It is going to be very tight. As someone said above, it now looks as though we can secure 3rd place at least and have a good chance of qualifying for the last 16 again.

I do think we have cover for that position as I don't think rb is a specialist position, I would think we have a number of players who could fill that role.

I do think we have gambled a bit at LB although if necessary Darren O'Dea can fill in.

Apart from some loose headers caldwell had an excellent game and kennedy brought some organisation to big mick once he came on. However caldwell is not a right back each game he started at right back he has suffered and teams try and exploit the weakness.

What happened to doumbe was a freak as he played superb but the sad fact is we may be exposed by our lack or forsight in covering the rB position. Wilsons knee was known about pre season and we gambled on doumbe. What we have now is a defence of centre backs and one left back. Not ideal but enough for the spl i wager however benfica away is another story. That said perhaps caldwell has ghosts to exorcise in lisbon.

Second point some on here need to lighten up. The personal abuse directed at those who do not blindly follow the party line has driven away some worthy and insightful contributors.

Big Wavy : Wilson injured, Doumbe injured, Caddis injured. Caldwell can cover right back. Definitely not as effective as his centre half but I suspect any club in the world who are now relying this far down the list of alternatives are doing so with a degree of trepidation.

GB : Second point some on here need to lighten up. The personal abuse directed at those who do not blindly follow the party line has driven away some worthy and insightful contributors.

Kano gave a wonderful answer to this early at 3.25. The now seemingly predictable attack on "party liners / pro-boarders / Paul's lackys, yadda yadda " by the self-proclaimed dissenters hides a sensitive bunch who inexplicably can't fathom how their constant whingeing against all things celtic (in a context when we are top of the league and having beaten Milan) provokes a defiant response from…….well, celtic fans on the blog. Let's hope they stay but they shouldn't really be surprised that given all this to "put up or shut up" when they spout their nonsense sometimes.

    Danny,

Maybe the beating of Milan has helped boost our confidence as a support as well as a team ?

As a fantastic outfit and current champions, will Milan go to the Ukraine and take 1 or maybe 3 points ? Wouldn't bet against them so that is perhaps how we are looking at it.

None of it is guaranteed but if we can't take a boost from Milan to Lisbon and seek to maximise our return on points there, then when can we ?

I fancy us for 3 points in Lisbon.

Trying to shoehorn a central defender or midfielder into fullback is a recipe for calamity.
The major exception to this was Hoopslegend DAgathe, who played the position beautifully.

Anyways,'mineshafters' nearly always put their points across without resorting to personal abuse. There is a long way for the season to go-the future is by no means set.

On the right back issue we had the money and the scouting network so nobody is telling me we could not have signed a decent fullback.

Not really. Edward asked me to expand on the midfield with a back 3 in place. For me they're attacking midfielders who track back a bit (not much different than now).

The extra defensive cover is in the middle of the park and the 3 defenders play and relate differently working slightly wider and as a single unit

For a fella who preached the philosophy of "lighten up", can you start that mantra at home sir :)

Don't know at all where you've taken that or where there is a typo but safe to say in the short time I've been here I've enough confidence in my views not to have to resort to name calling or point scoring on who is a bigger celtic fan than the next. But the irony of protesting against labels such as "follow follow interlopers" but yet adopting your own of "those who blindly follow every word of Paul and the board" is a little hypocritical dontcha think ?

I absolutely agree that constructive criticism is a must for good debate here. My observation is that some of the folk you have in mind seem intent on their version of constructive criticism to the point of blind incomprehensible rage against the manager, the board or the chairman as a matter of principle, arrive when we've lost and seem unable to provide a smidgeon of praise when we are a) top of the league b) financially sound and c) conquerors of Milan to name but three in my plus columns.

I'll argue any point on the club on its merit and on that front I would counter that we attempted to buy right backs (from france if I recall) but price, desire of the player and availability were issues. The guy we did bring in did alright the other night and was in situ to claim a long term spot in the team imho until tragedy struck.

Now come here fella and gis a hug :)

Surely the same would apply for UEFA (the punishment handed out would be for a fan getting onto the park and interrupting play).

Let's not get all ponsey here, there was no assault and the police have not and therefore UEFA cannot rule that there was.

A £10k fine is surely all the can dish out?

This was a great result – but more important an awesome performance.

We set our stall out in a way that will work either home or away.

The Average White Band were introduced in a seventies USofA soul TV show as a band from Scotland who play like they were brought up on corn bread and black eyed peas.

Well on Wednesday we saw a team from Scotland who play like they were brought up on Risotto alla Milan and Escalopes of Veal in Marsala.

They kept possession, passed and defended in awkward conditions against the world’s best that would make any Rosseneri proud.

Although after the Milan penalty* we played like we were Champions of the SPL still a wee bit a’ blood and guts did us no harm.

*Heard some people comment that Dida deserved an Oscar for acting WRONG Dida didn’t convince anyone Massimo Ambrosini should get it!

I didn't think I'd ever say this, but p8ddy (12.26, previous thread)- I agree with pretty much everything you said.

UEFA, in my view, are obliged to give us a doing. They don't want fences, and they will acknowledge that no club is going to get enough stewards to ensure that no-one could ever run onto the pitch. It's not Celtic's fault, as such. But the punishment for the club has to be sufficiently serious to deter anyone else who might think of doing the same. My guess would be a fine and suspended closure of part or all of the ground for a future game, but it's only a guess.

The players need to be protected. No player should have to play in fear of physical violence from supporters. Dida's reaction has saved us from worse, though, because it was a clearly calculated attempt to influence the outcome of the game by cheating. I would be surprised if UEFA tacitly endorsed that by altering the result or deducting points. If Dida had gone down immediately we'd be looking at a replay at best.

AC Milan's reaction after the game did them great credit. Brian Quinn has been a superb chairman, but he really didn't need to make his remarks about Dida. Everyone can see what happened. It won't be lost in any rush to punish us, and we gain nothing by antagonising AC Milan.

So will this finally stop it? The coin-throwing? The "good natured" pitch invasions? A tiny but harmful minority of our fans behave like swaggering, untouchable neds. It's all a big laugh, that Dallas was biased anyway, and Fernando's mental. It can't go on, and while I of course hope that UEFA will stop short of anything which alters the result, I also hope that whatever punishment Celtic receive will finally get that message home.

    The RB problem!
It wouldn't be a disaster going to Ipox with Caldwell at right-back, bearing in mind that "Elbows" McCulloch would be looking to exploit our full-backs. Going by the manager's logic on Wednesday, JJ will also play at Mordor.

However, GC at right-back isn't a viable option between now and January. I know that he had an injured foot at the end of last season, but he just isn't a full-back. Neither is Teddy B, but the manager tried him out there during the pre-season, so is he an option when fit?
What about an auld haun who is out of contract, like a Telfer(!), for the SPL? We're stuck with the declared squad for the CL, so it's either GC or TB. Opinions?

As a short term solution for the RB problem what about Paul Hartley? We do not really need the cover he gives in the SPL and Jarosik can play that role in the CL I believe. Hartley is an aggresive ball winner with ecent pace and can go for the ball in the air. He is also an intelligent adaptable player. I accept we lose an option in the middle but I think he would be comfortable there.

As part of the suppressed minority, I would prefer Caldwell at right back for the Rangers game. He has the height and strength to combat the physical and aerial threat of Mc. Cullough. Pace wouldn't be a problem and I don't think we have anyone else available to do the job. Kennedy or Bobo at centre half, depending on which one Gordon thinks is the fittest.

I would also structure the rest of the team as near as possible to Wednesday, with strength and mobility in midfield and playing the ball in low to the front pair.

    I am open to correction.

  • At 06/10/07 00:15, TommyTwistsTommyTurns said…

TtT - I had also considered Bobo for Mordor due to their obvious physical presence, but let's be honest, we just want him to bu**er off in January as he is a drain on the wage bill. Giving him a sniff of the first team will not achieve that aim!

You're right about the team structure, but I've got my doubts about Donati. I doubt that he has the heart for a Glasgow derby.
I hope that he proves me wrong.

The boy has guts and will relish the challenge on offer. His composure will help dominate the midfield and I would keep Jarosik up against Hutton and Whittaker.

    Noel,
Would you prefer Kennedy at RB and Caldwell in the middle? I would go for the opposite as JK is solid in central defence and GC showed that he can push forward, but hey ,what do we know, I couldnae trap a bag of cement and you've got a Police record.

Cracking copy from the Italian press - the title is "He was once a goalkeeper" -

C'era once a porter. For unanimous judgment it was the best one of the world with to Buffon: one show of coordination, glares and blow d'occhio. Then, during the derby of Champions of the 12 you open them 2005, piove to it I lean a rocket from the curve dell'Inter: from that evening Nelson de Jesus Silva, son of Izeotino and Celice, Dida saying, number one of the Milan, begins a frightful descendent parabola, than hard two years between erroracci and geese in series, finally culminates in the grotesque episode of Glasgow, Wednesday night. After the second uncertainty of the contest, that it provokes the 2-1 of the Celtic on the Milan, Dida receives a buffetto from an entered festante tifoso in field, tries to run after it, then stramazza to earth: it exits in stretcher, with an ice bag on the face, but the replay they reveal that it has been be a matter of dramatizing, than Dida has not received some violent blow, than insomma it has not succeeded nothing. And on the porter, than yesterday it has refused the Tapir of "Striscia the notizia", it is storm. To part the British newspapers, that they define "idiot" the invading tifoso ("Quattordici heroes and a deficiente" it is one of the titles them more gustosi) but also "tuffatore" or "imbroglione" the rossonero porter, is from the club of via Turati that arrives the harder sentence. Same Berlusconi is furious with Dida: he is the president in person, than Wednesday from house he assists to the game in tv, to telephone to Galliani for dirgli not thinking not even next to the resource: "Era the 90' and it would not be changed niente", mormora yesterday Berlusconi to the reporters, but the truth is that the dramatized one is too much grotesque, too much teatrale, and to resort would be counter-productive. "Non we expect null. L'Uefa makes that that more it thinks opportune - Galliani confirmation - but the position of the Milan is clear: nothing resource. As far as Dida, it has been hit, and creed that this does not go bene". But on the player the strali arrive dell'ambiente rossonero: even if off board, responsibilities of technical nature, because its rendering is pessimo from much time, beyond to the damage d'immagine for the Milan are chargeed to the porter serious. Some rossonero that prefers to remain anonymous, in the mesto travel of return from Glasgow, throws lì: "Giochiamo without porter... ". And the tifoseria is in subbuglio: the popolarità of Dida is to the historical minimums, the people it does not want more to see between the poles of the Milan. It, the stone of the scandal, tace. Like always, of the rest: Dida is a ombroso, mistrustful type, taciturno. Of return from Glasgow it is closed in its Hush, iPod shot in the orecchie and neanche one look around himself, but ago always therefore. If it spoke, it would even say that for a long time it is dragged behind physical problems (to the shoulders) that of it they condition the rendering. But in Dida truth it knows that its adventure to the Milan is to the capolinea, even if to March it it has been renewed the contract until 2010 to 4 million clean ones to season: the club also of recent has made to trapelare that the first choice, months ago, were Buffon, then the determined Berlusconis not to want itself to load l'investimento and it was preferred to withhold Dida, but without great enthusiasm. Hour the porter risks the place, to begin from next Sunday against the Lazio, solo that l'alternativa is Kalac and neanche in he ripone too much confidence. Alternatives for January, but scarseggiano are attempted, less than to resume It has to you, than but it is on loan all'Atletico Madrid, or to take Amelia from the Livorno. C'è then l'aspetto to discipline of the vicissitude. The Celtic, for l'invasione of the tifoso, risks the disqualification to the field or the doors sluices: between l'altro yesterday the personage, a 27enne, one is "costituito" going in the center of the club, than then l'ha put to disposition judicial dell'autorità and it has disqualified it "a vita" for all the games of the Celtic, in house and transfer. The relationship of the tern will be decisive arbitrates them and of the delegate Uefa, cipriota the Ackelidis. But also Dida, that its gesture could is spotted of seriously unsportsmanlike behavior (could be interpreted like an attempt to make to turn upside down to small table the result of the field) risks one disqualification: l'Uefa for a long time it has announced draconiane measures against the simulators. Weekend Fixtures

    Saturday, 06 October 2007
Dundee Utd v Motherwell, 15:00 Away win
Hearts v Falkirk, 15:00 Home win
Kilmarnock v Inverness CT, 15:00 Home win
Rangers v Hibernian, 15:00 Away win
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Sunday, 07 October 2007
Aberdeen v St Mirren, 15:00 Home win
Gretna v Celtic, 15:00 Away win

That would see Hibs going top for 24 hours and us extending our lead over the Rangers around 4:45 Saturday and leapfrogging Hibernian on Sunday.

Anyone else care to make a prediction on the weekend outcomes?

[“I’ve had worse nights”, perhaps not for the first time thinking back to one in particular.

A bit of wry understatement. Harking back perhaps to the Artmedia game.

Boston score a walk off three run homer that leaves Fenway to win the second game against the Angels by 6-3 and tale a 2-0 lead to the west coast.

It's been (another) night for dramatic endings.

And it's a good night from me.

Maybe also GS not getting carried away with one tremendous result, just liked he wasn't crushed by a horrific result.

Can you help me with my Japanese?

Starting to worry again about the Milan situation. I don't think BQ's comments have done us any favours at all. If it comes down to a "who behaved worse?" contest, then we will cannot win as it was one of our supporters who started the whole incident.

Also, UEFA asking Milan to explain Dida's substitution is very ominous. After all, what can Milan say apart from he was injured/shocked/disorientated by the fan? Can we actually dispute that- I doubt it.

It seems to me to be a question designed to provoke a response which blames us for the substitution, regardless of whether Milan want to go down this road or not. In this case, UEFA might be forced to conclude that our mismangement adversely affected the progress of a match, and then the whole replay business might well come back into play.

The things still in our favour IMHO are the reaction of the Italian press, which has slated Dida, and the apparently universal dislike of the replay option in European football opinion.

As for the guy (cannot bear to type his name). I see he was touting his story around the tabloids this week, and was applauded by supporters as he left the court. Words cannot describe the utter contempt I have for this individual.

Contrary to reports in one of today's papers, Scotland's provisional country ranking for 2008 is still 11th according to Bert Kassies' excellent UEFA website. This means next season's SPL champions will definitely have to play a qualifier to make the CL group stages.

Ukraine are provisionally 10th which is another reason we do not want to see Shatkar picking up many more points.

    Evening all.

    Big Wavy,TNBC,and Kitalba.

    Thanks.

Gweedorebhoy, firstly, let me say, your personal circumstances seem to have much affected your input here.

    A great deal.

And I am not talking about the size or frequency of your posts.

You have seemed lately to have altered your take on things.

But your post of 16.36 was a real throwback to your nonsense of previous times.

To Quote(you should try this some times,it will save you looking like a numpty. And before you start,I will be more than happy to meet both you and Sean South anywhere you like.Even if it is only to snigger at you.)

"Over the last few weeks people have been called

    Fannies
    Huns
Follow Follow interlopers and much worse just because they don't blindly follow every word from the board and paul".

    No they haven't.

They have been called this because, either they have been behaving like fannies, huns,or Follow Follow interlopers.

I could go and copy the "fanny" quote in total, but this would just make you appear even more silly.

People are not disagreed with, argued with,or "abused" as some people call it,because of who they agree with or disagree with.

It is purely down to the content of their posts.

If you post something that makes you a "hypocritical fanny" as I referred to Sean South previously, this has nothing to do with who agrees with who.

It is purely down to reaction to nonsense spouted on here,by some, and demanding no criticism because it is merely "opinion".

I will go and get posts from Sean South, and prove this incontrovertably, to be the case.

As I said in a previous post, and a nod once again to Negative Anon.

"If it looks like nonsense when you read it,if it sounds like nonsense when you hear it,and if most people think it is nonsense, then it must be nonsense".

As for your supposed abhorrence, shock and disgust at people being called "Fannies, huns and follow follow interlopers".

Let me tell you something that you may well be totally unaware of.

To some people, like me and other normal people, the accusation that I am incapable of forming my own opinion, and only capable of blindly following someone else who may share a few of my opinions,is far more insulting to me than perhaps being called a women's erogenous zone,or a "hun" or a "follow follow interloper".

And before your fall off your high horse.

    Feel free to continue.

As it makes you very similar to Sean South.

And you can read into that what you like.

Kano - there's a one year lag. Our country ranking at the end of this season (provisionally 11th) will determine whether the following season's (2008-9) SPL champions need to play a qualifier in 2009-10. If our country ranking is 10th, the SPL champions go straight into the group stages, assuming the CL winners from the previous season would have secured automatic qualification from their domestic league anyway.

As if that isn't complicated enough, we have Platini's proposals for domestic cup winners which will change everything again although not sure when that would be introduced if it happens.

I don't think there will be replay if nothing else because of the tight CL schedule.
Thats not to say UEFA cannot reverse the result because the worrying thing is Dida was subbed as a result of the incident regardless of how hurt he was.

I do not think it merits the same punishment as fireworks, coins or bottles. I personally think the throwing of a bottle through a team bus window is more serious however the keeper was assaulted (without voilence) during the course of the match which is extremely serious.

The punishment will also need to suit Milan. They would not want Celtic to play the other two teams behind closed doors as this would give Benfica and Shaktar an adcantage of gaining points in a difficult venue.

It's a huge mess and I hope UEFA "let us off" with a heavy fine as it was one isolated incident and the behaviour of 59,000 other fans was great as usual but we always seem to be unlucky in these situations.

I said before the season started that Rangers would not lose as many games this season but they would struggle to turn tight games into wins. 3 of the last 4 games they've failed to pick up points.

Walter is a better manager now than 10 years ago but maybe he's forgotten how to lead rather than take on the Scotland type approach? One man up front and that man Kris Boyd is a shambolic decision from an Old Firm manager.

I don't think that Walter Smith is a bad manager in any sense. Like any manager he has to do his best with the players he has at his disposal. I actually think that Rangers are much better than many CQN posters think they are but not quite as good as some others will have us believe. Regardless of how good or bad they are, it's beyond our club's management to influence that and I don't understand why their results should influence the assessment of our own team's performances. As has been said on here many times, you can only measure your performance against the teams you play. On that basis Celtic are doing rather well at this moment in time.

Well let me say that I was tha tconfident of Hibs winning today that I backed them in a lucky 15 (done out when Hull equalised with a penalty in injury time against palace), a 3 doubles and a treble line (done by ICT not beating injury ravaged Killie) and a 5 team acc done by ICT again.

So im up for the day but Hulls pen and ICT lack of finishing done me for about £400.

Well done Johnny Collins. Always liked the guy and was an excellent player for us, but was disappointed when he left so much so and I must admit this, that when he came back to Scotland i was still a bit peeved with him cause he left to got to Monaco.

I think some fans were like me. But as time has passed since coming back Johnny bhoy is starting to grow on me again.

Collins was a hero of mine growing up. Watching him and McStay in the midfield when we were struggling was a joy. Only a pity he never kicked around for another couple of years to be part of the team that stopped 10 in a row.

Then again in the cold light of day if a team like Monaco come calling with a wad of tax free cash to set you and your family up for life, what do you do? Collins departure was like Stan's in that he wanted to try something new. Only that we didn't get cash for him like Stan allowed us to get.

He's a massive Celtic fan and always will be. Think it may be time to forgive and forget. Let's give they guy a break.

I was disappointed when he left but i'll tell you something everytime he pulled on that jersey you got nothing but 100% from the guy. He always loved to stick it right up Rangers as well. So today must have been really sweet for him.

Don't underestimate the part he probably done in helping Brown joining us. Even although he said otherwise in public. Had to say that to show some front to the Hibs fans but deep down he wanted Brown to go to us.

He was also proved right about Kevin Thompson as well. He can be replaced without any problem and is not as goos as he thinks he is. As Rangers fans are starting to find out.

    LET'S hear it for JC!!

I made a post the other day expressing disappointment at RTE's coverage of the Celtic/Milan game - basically they had no interest or knowledge of Celtic; and having broadcast the game live couldn't wait to get on to the highlights of the English games.

Two people replied - Estadio said why was this odd when the English market is much bigger than the Scottish one. I don't get that --- RET were broadcasting the whole Celtic game. When the "English" BBC (i.e. the MOTD crew) broadcast the Old Firm [sorry, Celtic v Rangers] gaes they made th ost of them. Not so RTE commentators.

Tom the Tim made some comments about the RTE anchorman having seen his "performance" when we played Man U last season. Well, yes! Thanks!

As far as I can see it JC was one of the first 'professional' footballers we as a support were exposed to.

He knew football was his job and he also knew it was quite probably a short-term career.

As far as I'm concerned we as a support need to remmeber that just because a player is great for us and we love him, he doesn't actually owe us anything, anymorethan a player we're all glad to get shot of does.

Yes, you could argue that we pay his wages but on that basis his only obligation is to go out on the pitch and give his all, if he clearly doesn't then we have a right to complain. Other than that his only true obligation is too himself and his family.

Even if somebody on here can truly say that they devoted their playing career to the club they love, that was still their personal choice and in no way reflects on the rights or wrongs of another player's decisions.

How many of you can honestly say you're so devoted to your employer that nothing would make you leave?

Anyway well done to JC for guiding his team to an away win at Ibrox, it gives us an opportunity to open up a gap, and if he maintains this form, he might push Rangers into third. That would be nice.

Collie, you will hear no dissent from me.

WeeMinger, I regarded John Collins as a wonderful footballer. In six years with us, we won only one trophy, a Scottish Cup, beating Airdrieonians 1-0 in the final; a pitiful haul.

John had to move on. He soon featured in a Champions League semi-final, proof, if needed, that he made the right decision.

He has done well at Hibs, he made a particularly astute assistant manager appointment.

Today’s victory should surprise no one who remembers John as a player; there was something about the Ibrox turf that brought out the best, or maybe that should be the worst in him.

    John Collins owns Ibrox.

A poor result for us today, I don't think we played that badly it was just Hibs played better. A bad three points to lose but there is still a long way to go and like most of you I still think we will win the title. We have to stop dropping points at Ibrox and although I have every confidence in taking three points and Mr Smith keeping the upper hand on the 20th. One thing I would say though it's a bad show when you have to hope on Gretna doing you a favour this early in the season though I can't see them managing it. For the resident doomwatch brigade that last sentence doesn't mean I agree with you I think this will be our best year in a while.

Been a while since I posted (aye, don't pretend you noticed!).

I can't say I am in the camp that hates John Collins. I am not old enough to properly appreciate his contribution over all of his Celtic career, but I cannot hate him for leaving us. I think I remember him coming on in a friendly against Real Madrid (imagine that, the Spanish giants playing us at such a period of our history during a season!) and changing the game. We lost, but he certainly showed that although Tommy Burns benched him, he still had the ability.

He left, big deal. Larsson left on a bosman, so did Stubbs, so did Donnelly and O'Donnell, so did Macnamara...everyone leaves sooner or later, we only remember the good ones who were contributing at the time, and of course, why not? We don't want them to leave. On the flip side we have guys we want to leave the club, who won't. It happens, and thats the nature of the business. Unless you change the rules, that's the way it will be played.

He was a great footballer, he was and is still in peak condition, he has experience of big club and international games, the european game and culture. If his players cannot learn from him, then it is not he who is arrogant, it is the players who are lazy. When Hibs players revolted, the chairman could have sent him packing. But look who is still standing, and look who is top of the league. It tells its own story. They steal a last-minute winner against us, and score in the last part of the match then hold out at Ibrox.

Fitness plays a part in football, and if he wants to prove it in a press-up contest with players, then all credit to him since its clearly working, and it clearly made a point to his players. Gordon Strachan might not be showing off his body, but his end-product is still the same - fast football, and physical fitness.

And as for my thoughts on Hibs winning at Ibrox today, well, this about sums it up...you either get this, or you don't...

    Baaaaaaamm!!

Will anyone be in the city centre next Friday / Saturday? I did mention to Estadio that I may drop in by Sharkey's for a swifty at some point over the weekend. Depends on timing and company of course.

Speaking of company, has anyone heard from chennaiseabird lately? Or has he changed his Blogger name to something more local?

Must be scratcher time, so I shall wish you all a very good night.

    Big Liam @ 18:53

The obvious name missing from your list was Boy Molloy.
I too have removed his 'H' until he starts acting like a celtic supporter. Another one of these guys who just happens to be too busy to post whenever Celtic win

Sean South has taken some stick these past couple of weeks as has Inthedark for his misplaced optimism in the huns, but for me, Boy Molloy really has to look at himself in the mirror and ask what enjoyment he gets from following Celtic....

And a great piece from E-Tims that probably wont be read by many as the Live-updates thread will be here shortly, which is a pity.

Anyhoo, if you're out there Kano, this is for you.

"Dear Friends, I always enjoy your site. Football, to me, is about fun and passion, a magical thing. I'm 54 and went to my first Celtic game at Airdrie's old Broomfield in 1957 with my Papa and my Da. Until my early 20's, I was lucky enough to watch the team most week's, travelling with the local supporters bus (Phil Cole's, Coatbridge). I was part of the great Stein years, I was blessed to have watched, Ronnie Simpson, Iain Young, Willie Wallace, Bertie Auld and Tommy Gemmell. I learned everything I could about Celtic, the miracle of a club that mirrored the miracle of a people - they survived against all odds. I was proud, like you, to be a Celtic fan, dreamed of playing for the team, can still reel off the line-ups I watched. I sang about John Thomson's tragic death. I made a few trips away to European games but I never got to Lisbon. A big crowd watched the game outside in the back court where we lived, on a telly rigged up by the man upstairs (Mr McGill). The men drank bottles of Pale Ale and the women screeched and screamed throughout the match. It was fantastic! Even a Rangers' supporting family joined in – and although they weren't as ecstatic as us, they were gracious enough and agreed it was a great achievement for a Scottish team to win the European Cup.

It was a privilege to watch Kenny Dalglish and Danny McGrain. Ally Hunter was a great 'keeper.

By the 1980's I was married and shift work curtailed a lot of my games. But Celtic is in the blood. "Family" is an appropriate term to use for the Celtic fans. Murdo McLeod and Davie Provan played their hearts out for Celtic, and Tom McAdam, Alan Sneddon and Graeme Sinclair might not have had the top teams spying on them, but they earned their wages. Responsibility and 3 daughters (all Celtic mad) meant a wee bit more careful choosing of the matches, but I still went to lots of games. Billy Stark did us a turn and Gordon Marshall tried hard, as did David Hannah. Simon Donnelly never managed to make the next step up which was a shame. In 1996, I became a season ticket holder; the weans were up and I had a bit more time and cash available. We all sensed the new era was on the horizon! They were good times and bad times. McCann could be a frustrating wee man, I considered not renewing my book after Tommy Burns was sacked as manager but stuck with it. There were some great players and attractive football, Andy Thom springs to mind while Craig Burley was always solid. Paul Lambert became a great player and Celtic captain. If you have read this up to this point, you will note that every single PLAYER I mention is a non-catholic. I considered turning in my book when Jock Brown was appointed, not for any other reason than Jock Brown is a self-promoter, one of life's opportunists, a man who did not have the type of profile or personality to be a trusted servant and public face of the Celtic fans - WHO ARE THE CLUB, a man who was completely ruthless in the pursuit of his own progress in the world and I believe was and would have been an even bigger disaster for Celtic had he not moved on.

In 2002, I had spells of illness and was forced off work, eventually being referred to a neurologist. I missed loads of games. Then I was diagnosed with motor neurone disease. I knew Jimmy Johnstone had this illness but when I learned more about it, what the future held I was shattered. So now, I am an armchair fan (or a wheelchair fan if you like). I've enjoyed the past 7 years, Martin O'Neil, regular big European games, Henrik Larsson (of course) and all the other great players. But the announcement that John Reid is the new Chairman of Celtic is a black dolt on this great club whose ethos, history and traditions are unparalleled by any other football club anywhere in the world. The similarities with Brown are uncanny. This man, Reid, is a vainglorious egomaniac. His record as a senior politician is disgraceful. This man supports internment without trial or even redress to a lawyer. He helped whip up and sustain the ignorant, bigoted bias and racism against people who don't look the same as him. He is a liar and ruthless operator who puts his own interests before the common good. He promoted and helped prosecute the illegal invasion and occupation of another land in order to help his new-found friends, the multi-billionaires and global companies.

Reid long ago, divorced himself from the values with which the vast majority of Celtic supporters identify. Everything Reid has done in his professional life has been for the good of John Reid. It also involved joining a gang of unscrupulous robbers and thieves whose main interest is making money. As a result of his participation in the Iraqi fraud, over 1 million Iraqi's have been murdered, most of them women and children. Your photo beside the article on Reid speaks a thousand words. And while Reid sits in the Chairman's room at Celtic Park, his swollen head even bigger at his latest "achievement" the kids from our housing schemes are being sent abroad without proper equipment and being paid poverty wages for the ideology of this skunk. As Health Secretary, Reid rammed through Foundation Hospitals forcing the NHS to compete for services and further privatise the health service. When the local health board announced Monklands (in his own constituency) was to close its A&E, Reid was at the demo, wiping his crocodile tears, claiming to oppose HIS OWN POLICY!

Celtic fans should be very concerned about the appointment of Reid as the Chairman of Celtic Football Club. He is a self-serving sycophant, a liar and a key figure in the decision making process that has led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. My Papa, with his lovely Sligo tilt, told me what he had personally witnessed in Ireland, as a result of British imperialism and the determination to cower and demoralise a people in the interest of controlling them and their land. He told how the Black and Tans rampaged drunk through Irish towns and villages. Sacred statues or religious relics were gleefully smashed to bits. Women were assaulted, family pets shot. He saw 2 youths kicked to death in Donegal at the fair-day by a unionist mob who had been bussed in to teach the taigs a lesson. Men were lifted and put in jail without ever seeing the inside of a court. They lost their jobs (if they had one), their families went hungry, and they were evicted from their homes. Then many months later, they were released without so much as a by-the-way!

There was a John Reid in the British cabinet then too. Celtic fans and Celtic would have had nothing to do with such a wretch then, and they should have nothing to do with such a wretch now. If I still had my season ticket, I would definitely now return it.

    Best regards,
    Barney Higgins,"

    Cheers,Pablo.

But despite all that,he can chair a meeting and he knows a lot of people, apparently.

This may help in the long held fantasy of joining another league for a few more dollars, apparently.

Oh and he is Catholic too,and once even claimed to be a Republican, apparently.

And we get this from the same people who tell you that the club should have nothing to do with politics,or politicians, apparently.

So we must ignore all of what Barney Higgins has said,it doesn't matter,as he doesn't do that job any more, and this is what Dermot wants,so it is a good thing for our club, apparently.

You should know that by now...

To my mind he was a decent keeper, a good shot stopper, but with crosses? Oops - remember 5-1 at Mordor?

But onwards! Today should see us coasting to victory, and I agree that there is no need to hump Gretna, but we still need to get a goodly number of goals in the "for" column - you never know what will happen in the remainder of the season, and I do not want a repeat of that season not long past where one goal cost us the league.

Loved this from Scotland on Sunday -

"After a turgid opening hour, Hibs claimed their decisive goal. They won a corner, Filipe Morais, on at half-time for Clayton Donaldson, swung it in and Murphy sneaked in ahead of everyone to glance a gorgeous header past McGregor. He took off in the direction of the Hibs support, pursued by his team-mates, greeted by his euphoric fans, a small pocket of joy amid the bitterness and rancour of the Rangers people."

Curly-the very good commentary on BBC Radio Cumbria did not blame him for any of the goals.it was 4-0 at halftime so they must have taken the foot off the gas in the second 45.
Excellent rockumentary on tribute bands on BBC2 last night, not least the interviews with the performers. The Phil Lynott guy expressed regret that he was an 'entertainer,'when he wanted to be an 'artist'.

Unfortunately it did not feature our own Miketw10,aka Luther Perkins.

MacJay-you can't take the politics out of this appointment.Without politics DJR is just another Aul'Haun chuntering on about the good old days;he's not the next Chairman of our great Club.

Without politics his value to DDesmond is nil.His value to Celtic will be demonstrated over the next few months.

One of the criticisms of BQuinn after Wednesday was in regard to his uncharacteristically undiplomatic comments regarding Dida-imagine DJR in the same position.
