Celtic and Benfica put heritage on the line in Champions League

Benfica have a heritage which inspires respect. They were showing Europe’s finest how to play the game in the early 60s, and knocked Liverpool and Manchester United out of the Champions League only two seasons ago.

They lost three second half goals at Celtic Park last season, but looked comfortable in the first half, and have since beaten Celtic twice in Lisbon. They are not, however, as good a team as Milan, who failed in Glasgow last month. If Celtic are to remain in Europe after the Champions League group stage, they will most probably have to win tonight and effectively end Benfica’s European season.

Benfica are also vulnerable. They are six points adrift of Porto in the league after only nine games and a home defeat to Shakhtar in the Champions League placed their season on the edge almost before it started.

Celtic have given cause for concern in recent weeks, but they can and must again reach the heights which has made Celtic Park such a formidable Champions League venue, one where the home team enjoyed the longest run of clean sheets in Champions League football until Milan converted a generous penalty.

Scott McDonald has already shone on these occasions, scoring crucial goals against Spartak Moscow and Milan, and he will be key to Celtic’s chance of winning the game, but tonight will require more than one match winner, we will need 11 men at the top of their game.

The role of the Celtic support cannot be underestimated on these occasions. The noise and encouragement generated by 60,000 fans has been absolutely crucial to a record of 10 wins and two draws from 13 home Champions League games.

Spartak and Milan both enjoyed periods of pressure at Celtic Park this season; both looked comfortable early in the game, and I expect something similar from Benfica tonight, but I expect them to perish in a similar manner.

It is time to remind Benfica that they are not the only team with a great European heritage.

Sorry hamptontim but you're wrong! The score is correct but you've missed out Aiden from the scoring list.

I have a good feeling about tonight, also.

Despite what Gordon is saying, a win is crucial, and I've no doubt we'll get it.

Patience is the key, and thankfully, the support are now aware of this in CL matches.

Another great night awaits us all.

    Celticlover,

I've been championing a 2-0 (McGeady, McDonald) result all day so far!

A McGeady free-kick, followed by a second half poachers fininsh from Skippy to calm the nerves after 15 minutes of Portuguese pressure.

My productivity has plummeted today....it's about to cease completely for a few hours.

Benfica are not the team of last year and Celtic are slightly better than last year and so if we play well we'll win.

The only question for me is whether Jarosik or Donati will start? I would go for Donati.

    Gordon,

please pick the right team and don't play players out of position.

If that happens 2-1 for the Hoops.

    Celticlover,

the problem with playing Donati is that Gordon will thn shift Brown to a wide position.

Hartley and Brown MUST play in the centre.

Therefore Jiri will get the nod.

A postive article before a (hopefully) positive night at CP. I hope the team can be inspired to put on a great CL performance once again.

Any rumblings about likely team selections tonight?

  • At 06/11/07 13:01, pin76 said…

I'm expecting Jarosik to play. Hartley and Brown in centre mid seems to be the preferred pick and I'm not sure Donati can play on the wing. You can argue whether or Jarosik can do that job, but he has played there for Celtic and he has more CL experience than anyone at the club.

  • At 06/11/07 13:04, Madra Rua said…

I'd like to see the same team as Saturday, with perhaps Donati replacing Jarosik. He seems to be more comfortable on the left. Solid defence and cover for Caldwell are a must. Paul Hartley will have his work cut out, but he's twice the man he was this time last year. Wish I could be there, nerves are starting to get to me!!!

    Yes, same team as Saturday's.

Don't forget Jiri has more CL experience than anyone else right now. Aiden to torment them and Skippy to finish things off. Would love to see JVoH get on the scoresheet tonight too, I think a goal would do wonders for him. 2 - 0 for me!

Its interesting to see McManus's comments today, that the current squad is not at the same level as the class of 2003. Honesty is always appreciated although I am not sure who was on 50K/week.

    Well said, Paul.

Hope to see a massive performance from Skoosh tonight. He's still a novice at this level, but he's a bit special.
PH, Skippy and Aiden are the form players right now and the rest need to raise their game.

    Mon the Hoops

I think it was pointed out that prior to the last game previous Celtic V Benfica had always finished 3-0 to the home side. I would take that tonight. Although I think winning by two clear goals will suffice.

I think a win tonight is all that matters, I'm not convinced there's any chance we'll end up level with Benfica (I suppose we could find a a way) so a clean sheet is not as vital as it will be against Shakthar.

Patience required as always, I thought the crowd were excellent in this way against AC Milan. It's all about easing into the game at this level.

Unless you storm out early doors and score a couple :)

  • At 06/11/07 14:57, Bertie said…

Jarosik will get the nod over Donati as it will leave Brown and Hartley in the middle and he always seems to play better in CL games than the SPL. His CL experience will get him a start.

I have a feeling it will be a real struggle, but we will win by a single goal from the napper of a defender.

Got 40-1 for Kennedy and 33-1 for McManus first goal scorer.

    Bring it on.

  • At 06/11/07 15:04, dontbrattbackinanger said…

It should be well within our capabilities tp win this by two clear goals; I think an early goal for us and their heads may go down.

The other thing to be avoided is bizarre penalties-over to you Mr Referee.

    Come on the Hoops!

A good solid, professional 90 minutes.

PS Heading for Mcchuills before the game.

So much depending on Skippy continuing his rich vein of form. Time for some others to step up.

They might get the space to work tonight. Hope it's a great game tonight, but I'll take an ugly win as a fall-back!

Been clockwatching all day, it's the same b4 every big game. A bit nervous although I think we can win this game. By and large Celtic have done not too bad this season, some excellent results such as against moscow and meelan mixed in with poor shows like Shaktar, Gretna and tfod. I like the sound of 2-0 but in truth any type of win will do 4 me.
Managed 2 get tickets 4 my 2 wee brothers so off 2 the game we will go, full of nerves and hope.
Come on Celtic, give us a performance 2nite we can all be proud of and 3 points in2 the bargain.

    Hail hail

We need to beat Benfica tonight by a greater score than they beat us in Lisbon so we can qualify for the Uefa Cup. That is thee most important objective, 2 nil would be perfect.

Once we've done that we can then think about beating Shaktar and maybe qualifying from the group, but to do that we need the whole team to be playing to their full potential regulalrly and often, particularly when it matters most.

I've a feeling the big Dutchman will tonight emphatically announce his return, I'm often to bet on him to be the first scorer.

I hear JJ is dropped. Hartley wide left and Donati in the middle.

I posted earlier that Saturdays team was the one for me. If this is true then I believe it another tactical gaff.

I expect an open game of football tonight.
Benfica will also want to win this one… Which means there should be a bit of space out there and, after our intrepid defence hath once more thwarted the jousting of the Spanish pretenders we shall gallop forth and screw them where it hurts most – in the onion bag.

If Skoosh and Aiden play well then all will be well.

    2-1 come on ye Celts
