Celtic Park to host Queen and Commonwealth opening ceremony

Celtic Park will host the opening ceremony for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the first time the games, with representatives from countries with over 30% of the world's population, have visited the city.

As Head of the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth II (she is Queen Elizabeth II of England and Queen Elizabeth I of the United Kingdom, but prefers not to use her United Kingdom title) is expected to open the games, and will no doubt be looking forward to participating in the unique Celtic Park atmosphere.

Her Majesty’s association with Celtic goes back to the Coronation Cup, won by the club in 1953 and immortalised in song. I am sure Palace officials will be busy arranging a suitable acknowledgement of that triumph at the opening ceremony. Celtic Park will be the only venue the Queen visits during the games.

The games being awarded to Glasgow is great news for the city, and for the Parkhead area in particular, with the Athlete’s Village, Velodrome and National Indoor Sports Arena all being built nearby.

In my time going to Celtic Park, large areas of Parkhead have gone from being simply impoverished, to being an intimidating derelict wasteland. The regeneration of the area will bring welcome facilities, business and people back to Parkhead.

    Hi Paul67,

Do you see any tangible benefits for Celtic in this or will it be more of the prestige by association type?

No word on the stadium development, Paul. Is it just a rumour or is there some substance to it?

I'm not sure we actually need any extra capacity long-term. I saw there was a kiosk outside the ground on Tuesday selling tickets for the match. I'm not sure the demand is there.

    Good question, Edward.

Celtic acquired land in the area surrounding Celtic Park in anticipation that this decision would come off. You can expect Celtic to have new facilities built (think restaurants, bars and boulevards) well before the event.

porridgeand, there is not even a rumour of stadium development, it will not happen. Unless...

Her Celtic Park Supporting Majesty gets a new 'facility' built, just in case she needs to polish her tiara.

Sorry, I have no info on her mortal demise.

    Thanks Paul

As I said before there is no need for it. Yes, it would look great, but wouldn't look so great playing Falkirk with only 50,000 present. You can see for yourself just how many empty seats there are just now for run-of-the-mill games. Season-ticket sales would also fall further as the ability to pick and choose your games would be increased by higher capacity.

Unless we get into the Premiership....

Great news for Glasgow and potentially very good news for Celtic. the east End should see a great deal of much needed investment, including transport infrastructure.

The wasteland acrooss London Road, (which was North Dalmarnock and currently our overflow car park!) will look very different in 7 years time.

And Paul67 - it may well be King Charles the whatever who opens the games!

    porridgeandbananas,

don't see any bad thing about having more seats than people filling it every week.

It is much more preferable to be able to get seats in different areas of the ground,be able to move away from the idiot who has been annoying you for the last few years, and generally, give people the choice of which games they choose to go to,rather than the current situation of having to buy a ticket for every game,so you can guarentee yourself one for the bigger games.

Season tickets,in my view should be banned.

    And the sooner the better.

Great news for the city and almost too funny for words that Liz comes to Paradise and not Mordor.
Expect Facist Facist to mount a letter writing campaign to have the venue changed.

BTW Apologies if this appeared in the previous blog or if you've seen this before; this is an opinion column from the Spanish paper El Mundo printed yesterday.

PLEASE, DON'T EVER COME BACK AGAIN

Dear Rangers supporters- never come back to Barcelona again.
And not because your players themselves aren’t a legitimate team.

No, it’s not because of that- the Nou Camp frequently hosts teams who are lazy, boring, who only defend, who run and kick their opponents, and who shouldn’t be in elite competition. On top of this, Rangers merely defend, run at the opposition and play dirty. Their defenders are butchers, their midfielders, heavy-footed; and their strikers just stand there like the furniture.

But even apart from the footballing aspect, the best thing would be for Rangers never to return to Barcelona, because every time they do, they make a mess of the place. 35 years ago, you (the Rangers supporters) destroyed the seats at the Nou Camp. This time we have enjoyed no less than 48 hours of brawls, provocation, rackets, fights and common drunk women throughout the whole city, which you have fouled however you pleased.

Stay at home and vomit in your own living-room, urinate in your sitting-room corners, fight with your neighbours, the Celtic supporters (who deserve a prize just for putting up with you) and foul the streets of Glasgow instead. Don’t come back here again, because it is not a laughing matter. And, by extension, don’t play in the
Champions’ League either. You are not at that level neither in a sporting nor human sense.

There are noisy groups of supporters who, although they drink vast amounts of beer, make friends at the same time. But you? Not you, because everywhere you go, you turn into a rubbish tip. You are undesirables. And so are those who fraudulently sell,
or “rent out” their tickets. These people screw Barca over, because they trade their season tickets illegally. And in doing this they cause massive annoyance for other members of the club. A true Barcelona fan would not re-sell their ticket for the match.

If you are not going to the match, give it to a family member, or you could even use the 'Seient Lliure' service (an automated ticket service used by some Spanish clubs including Barcelona).

From now on, the responsibility lies with UEFA and the club itself to ensure who the ticket is sold to. The best thing for all of us would be that you as a supporter, in a moment of lucidity, decide not to travel if you do not have tickets. As that is never going to happen, those who sell the tickets illegally must be brought to justice. But the best thing would be if we never had to play Rangers again.

Good news for Glasgow. I think it is recognition that CP is an excellent stadium (as we all know). They're probably hoping for an atmosphere something like our European nights.

On the QE I, v's QE II debate. I looked this up to settle an argunment. I don't know if the following was in place in 1952, but a new monarch would choose the highest number from each of the represzented countries of the UK. So if Scotland had previously had 4 King Chucks and England 2, the next UK King of that name would be King Chuck V. The same would work if England had had more monarchs with the chosen name. - Here's hoping that before another can be appointed; sense prevails and we have a people's republic. (Is it ok to to mention my political leanings?)

There must be an extention to the Main stand or a complete redevelopment of the main stand.
There are thousands of dignatories invited to the opening ceremony, and if you think they will be put into the existing seating at Celtic Parks Main Stand, you surely must be kidding.

Apart from the directors box and the section up the middle of the Main Stand, the rest of the seating in the Main Stand is atrocious,in fact I'd rather sit in my seat in the Lisbon Lions Stand than park my butt in the Main Stand,
other than the directors box and the centre section.

No I think there will be redevelopment at Celtic Park and it will be on a grand scale,80,000 seater stadium plus add-ons.

If we do'nt extend Celtic Park,we will never see another CL,OR EUFA, Cup Final in Scotland again.

Michel Platini said that the minimum capacity for a Stadium to hold a final will be 80,000,so if Celtic are the forward thinking club that I hope they are, then they should extend the Stadium, there would be financial help in building the extention.

I think we could honour him (if we chose to) in a more imaginative way.

Just remembering there, Chelsea have a Nigel Spackman entrance at the Bridge!!!!!

major redevelopment is very much on the cards
for the main stand. the finance has already been structured
and not by us (celtic) i might add.

ive also heard two other whoppers over and above this
nike want to be heavily featured through our involvement and
the redevelopment is on the city council.

Our greatest ever team and it's manager have been the only two recipients of a naming of a stand. For me, that leaves Celtic's Captain and maybe their greatest ever player deserving of a similar honour. If we were to name all of them that is. I'd also argue in favour of Willie Maley and Henrik Larsson before Fergus McCann.

Not that I'm demeaning what he achieved, how he achieved it or what it means to all of us but it would not be appropriate to name it after one man. Why not just call it the Celtic Fans stand as those who bought shares were as important?

One of those debates that could go on all night, thankfully I'm visiting CQN's preferred pre-match venue shortly!!!!

TMC- Willie Maley, fair enough; but without Fergus Mccann there wouldn't have been a club for HL to join!

Also, it keeps his name alive; which isn't easy when the hero of the story hasn't kicked a ball for the club,or scored a goal,or been a great manager.

3/4 of the'new' Celtic Park is down to him, it deserves to have the final piece named after him.

There is more than a few on here who moan about international football but no one will be more proud than Kennedy to put the Scotland jersey again. He's worked hard to get back from injury and he's look alright, but I think we'll start to see him start to really command games again next season.

You'll get no disagreement from me that he deserves all the praise in the world but we're a football club and a special one at that. I think to name a stand after him is the wrong thing to do, name the press and media facilities at Lennoxtown after him!

This is surely the best opportunity to get paradise finished.
¾ of the stadium is great, only the main stand doesn’t look how it should.
For years I’ve been looking forward to the roof joining seamlessly together. I’ve always imagined how Celtic park could and should look. Seven years gives us enough time to get the financing and building finished for a new stand, besides the new card–scan/swipe system which will be introduced, to help you find your seat: we can’t have her majesty calling for a steward to try and explain how the thing works.
No matter if the place isn’t filled to capacity against ICT, we’ll need that for the huns and European games plus the possibility of using the “arena” for spectacular events. There are other things going on in the world besides football to fill CP. I can’t think of one atm but I’m sure there is.
Anyway, great news. Are we going to call them the Celtic games?

Guys, I am a daily reader of the quicknews and have been for a long time now. I think it is superb and have been meaning to create an account for ages but never seem to get round to it until today...

Again a conversation has came up about renaming a part of the club to honour a former player, manager, chairman etc. This time it has been the Main Stand, previously the new training complex at Lennoxtown and I am sure others in the past. I have heard all sorts of suggestions including the fantastic "The Pope John Paul Stand". However, on a serious note over the course of both of these debates I have been absolutely ASTOUNDED that certain suggestions have been made over and above one GLARING, BLATANT, and UNBELIEVABLE omission... the one... the only... James McGrory.

I would be quite happy for someone to make me look ridiculous by telling me there is already an appropriate memorial or some form of recognition to what can only be described as a true 'legend' and arguably the greatest forward ever to wear the hoops. (And before that sparks off a huge debate, I did say arguably)

Does anyone agree that 'The Jimmy McGrory Stand' or 'The James McGrory Training Complex has a nice ring to it?

    Celtic Park
    Opening ceremony
Located in the Eastern Venue Cluster, Celtic Park will host the opening ceremony of the Games.

The home of Glasgow Celtic Football Club, this is a stadium with one of the most lauded and celebrated atmospheres of any football arena in the world. This amazing atmosphere is not just due to capacity; the impressive stands literally tower above the pitch, generating a ‘wall of sound’ that brings the hairs on the back of the neck to attention.

The opening ceremony will be a magnificent celebration in a spectacular arena. With the permission of the Commonwealth Games Federation, we want to break with tradition and bring the athletes, the stars of the show, into the arena at the start of proceedings. Situated within walking distance of the Athletes’ Village, they will be able to easily walk, to and from the opening ceremony.

Unfortunately they're not holding the shooting in Sunny Stirlingshire as they did for the Embra games - its gone to Barry Buddon - which is LOVELY......not.

O`Donnell caught him on the boat
He wished he`d never been afloat, the filthy skite.

    It was`nt very sensible
    To tell on the Invincibles
They stood up for their principles day and night

And they all went up to Monto,Monto,Monto.....

Now the Queen she came to call on us
She wanted to see all of us
I`m glad she did`nt fall on us
    She`s eighteen stone

"Mr melord the Mayor" says she
"Is this all you`ve got to show me"
"Why no maam there`s more to see pog mo thoin!

And he took her up to Monto Monto Monto
He took her up to Monto langeroo
    To you.

Monto is Montgomery Street the heart of Nighttown the red light district immortalised in Ulysses.

This area made another contribution to literature when Joyce and Gogarty were entertaining some charming young hoors in Nightown.Joyce had completed his first collection of verse but had not chosen a title.

One of the ladies had to use a chamber pot to relieve herself and in doing so produced such a musical effect that Joyce ecalled the collection " Chamber Music"

With the announcement of Gordon Strachan's successful appeal, surely a question mark must hang over Dougal's future as a Grade 1 ref.

It was not a case of mistaken identity or obscured vision, but rather a vindictive act against a team manager.

Referee Jim Callaghan was suspended for less.

On the question of whether CP should be extended, wouldn't it make some sense to raise the capacity and issue season tickets with a free child ticket attached.

Otherwise, where are the supporters of the future going to come from.

In researching further, i still cant see where we fall down.I understood the dressing rooms and surrounding area where refurbished last year

Criteria for UEFA 5 Star rating
Minimum capacity of 50,000 (5-star venues) / 30,000 (4-star venues) – individual seats with backrests. (Venues that still have individual seats without proper backrests will still continue to be accepted. In the future, however, closer attention will be paid to this aspect, and which will influence the committee’s decision regarding the addition of venues to these list categories.)
Pitch dimensions of 105 x 68 m. The field of play must be in pristine condition and be prepared accordingly for a final (quality of grass, irrigation, smooth surface, etc.).
Protective fences around the field of play are not acceptable. Venues which have such installations will not be included on the list.
Sufficient room around the field of play for advertising boards and at least 18 TV cameras. In addition, there must be enough room between the goals and the first row of spectator seats behind both goals for a minimum of 150 photographers.
First-rate dressing-rooms for both teams and the referees (equal size and furnishings for both teams, spacious, bright and clean).
Suitable and appropriately equipped drug-testing room.
Floodlighting of a minimum intensity of 1,400 lux (eV) in the direction of the main camera, and of 1,000 Lux (eV) towards the other areas of the stadium, plus an efficient emergency power supply able to provide, without interruption, the same luminous light intensity as the main lighting.
Modern security installations (access monitoring system, adequate PA system, etc.).
A permanent TV surveillance system in colour that is able to monitor the movement of spectators, as well as their behaviour inside and outside the stadium. This installation must also be able to produce still shots of any troublemakers, which can then be distributed immediately to the security officers / stewards in the stadium.
Clear signage that everyone can understand inside and outside the stadium, as well as in its immediate vicinity.
Suitable covered seats for disabled spectators and their accompanying persons (minimum of two sectors with at least 50 places each). The areas for disabled spectators must be adequately equipped with toilet facilities and a refreshment bar.
Acceptable sanitary facilities for spectators (both sexes) in terms of numbers, cleanliness and standards. Toilets without seats will no longer be accepted for spectators of either sex.
Provision of first-rate media facilities in terms of camera positions, working places, TV studios, etc., in accordance with the “UEFA Guidelines for Media Facilities”.
Adequate first-class facilities must be provided for VIPs, including a minimum of 150 places in the Honorary Tribune VIP box.
International airport(s) able to cope with the huge extra demands of a UEFA final (capacity for up to 60 charter flights per day in addition to the normal, scheduled flights)
Adequate hotel accommodation. For UEFA and its partners, at least 1,000 five-star hotel rooms (UEFA Champions League) / 500 rooms (UEFA Cup) are needed. In addition, enough other hotel accommodation in all types of category must be available.

For too long now we've heard all the arguments for Balde playing.

He aint gonna play again, he was a reasonable defender.

The media has managed to stir up this storm that Balde not playing in oor defence has somehow weakened us.

    Has anyone checked the GD?

Would we leak any less goals with Bobo there?

I think its time for a reality check with some.

I wonder how many of the people calling for his reinstatement to the team were also calling for him to be dropped after Lyon and Porto (amongst others).

Bobo was part of a great Celtic team, he had his time, now its the time for others to take up the mantel.

I just cant understand sometimes why people fall for all this crap from the press, and at the same time fuel it!

    Evening BelfastKev.

Before I start, we could have and should have spent more money in the summer, that is not in doubt.

As I reported they would back in April, Rangers went for broke this year, as is their prerogative. They are still, however, a net seller since Alex McLeish took over in 2001, whereas Celtic are a net spender – this has been the root of our comparative success over them.

A “healthy bank balance” is a fine thing, unfortunately, we do not have one. We are in debt and despite two substantial share issues since 2001, have been in debt every day for over a decade.

We have just reported our first profit since Dr Jo’s season. Aggregate spending during this period was unsustainable and was sanctioned during a period when fans and board alike seemed (to me) to be oblivious to the dangers of running at a permanent loss.

As I said, there was money available in the summer which should have been spent, it remains available and I hope is spent soon, but we must chart our own course, not react to the (irresponsible and unsustainable) spending of Rangers. This means breaking even at a very minimum, and yes, like you, I would like to see a healthy bank balance one day. Then maybe we could flash the bling a bit, but you know controls needed to get that healthy bank balance.

Peat Blog, agree. Having a disturbed night?

    Dontbratt,

Thank you for your good wishes, we will certainly enjoy the bracing gales on the Ayr seafront.

I am friendly with an Royal Marine veteran. He and his wife, both well into their 80s travel all over Britain to Royal Marine functions.

He has a tremendous friendship with his old comrades.

Unfortunately he tells me that with the passing of each year, so their numbers at each reunion get smaller.

My own dad was a Staff Sergeant Instructor in the Army Physical Training Corp, he was in the army the entire war but never left Aldershot.

He was in no way interested in keeping friendships going, perhaps due to the nature of his army career.

He would train a new bunch of soldiers every six weeks, so he never built up friendships.

I hope your dad gets to many many more reunions.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

Is that true, that your scouts have found the new left back? Our media say it's only the metter of the transfer fee, one million pounds against one and half million pounds.

Winninggemell :- 1937/38. In the October Rangers played at Stoke City to raise money for the Holditch Colliery Disaster. As a mark of respect that club issued Rangers with the ‘Loving Cup’ which had been created to commemorate the silver jubilee of King George V. The ‘Loving Cup’ is still used to this day when the reigning Monarch is toasted after the first home game of the New Year.

I don't know if it's still the case of first game after the new year or whether it's kept for the first Rangers/Celtic game of the new year not that the ne'rday fixture has been consigned to history

I think Stokes would have benefited by playing with us, he is still young and can still come good. He has already shown he can perform in the SPL. I wonder how Miller would have coped if he stayed with us. Remember Martin pushed for a 30k contract offer for him. He could have been another Balde on the books.I know Roy Keane still has high hopes for him so maybe he shouldn't be written of just yet.

I'm really happy for Wallace. I don't think he would have played many games for us so to get the money we got for him is great. He's still a talented player who has done really well at Sunderland.

For some reason, although I am an infrequent frequenter, I have been invited along to the presentation ( do I owe Duffield ?, do I eckers like). Hopefully there will be some freebies thrown in but I wouldn't bet on it.

  • At 10/11/07 13:31, Sean said…

It is unlikely that he'll become a top, top player like it was hoped he would become. He wouldn't be the first to develop late though, Hartley was a promising youngster but became a journeyman for a number of years before developing into an excellent midfielder. Miller still shows glimpses of what he is capable of but he is really inconsistent. Maybe he doesn't work hard enough. Remember he didn't break into first team football until he was around 21/22 because he had a number of injuries in his late teens. This would hold his development back, much the same way as it has Kennedy. His time at Man U really set him back as well but he's played a lot of football over the last couple of years. The next two seasons will be key for him, if he doesn't make a mark then he might just drift into the lower leagues and spend the rest of his career down there.

But I think we are all in agreement that we didn't offer him a long term contract on 30k a week, eh? Then again if he stayed we might not have had black sunday, part of the problem was down to tiredness in our midfielders. Miller would have bolstered our squad and gave us additional options. You can also suggest that if he didn't leave he might have continued his rapid development.

  • At 10/11/07 13:35, Gordon_J said…

I think Miller made an awful decision to go to Man U. The appeal of the EPL and more money of course, but in a footballing sense it was a bad move for him.

He had come through a terrible time with injury and needed regular games, and was never going to get that as a back up at Man U.

Last season was really his first full season playing, and he is not a regular this year.

A very talented player, but I think his career is always going to be a "what if?"

Newcastle will be happy with the point. Milner's cross eluded everyone, including a rather static Craig Gordon, to creep in off the far post.

Kenwyne Jones the Sunderland striker impressed me, haven't seen too much of him but he is big and strong and won a lot of headers.

I didn't know that about B. Stokes. From Wiki

He died in 1995, after contracting pneumonia during a round of golf, aged 44. He left behind a football career in which he was a hard-working professional who did everything right at his moment of glory.

Bobby died on the same day as another football legend who started his professional career at Southampton, Ted Drake, on May 30, 1995.

He has been honoured by having one of the luxurious hospitality suites at the St Mary's Stadium named after him, as has one of the buildings that now occupy the site of the former Dell: Stokes Court.

His memory lives on, like that.

Useles as per usual bit of trivia here, Sunderland at that time had a scout in the Dumbarton area and took several lads including Bobby south, one of them was Helenburgh bhoy Dominic (Nicky) Sharkey who was the second string centre and reserve to Brian Clough, Nicky never progressed but his back up was a young Rentonian called John (Solly)O'Hare who followed Cloughie to Derby, Leeds and Forest.

Solly was and still probably is a close friend of MON and was a scout for us and one of his discoveries was Bobo.

If you're watching the Getafe-Barcelona game and are wondering why there are a lot of spaces, here's the explanation.

Spanish clubs, once or twice a year, often when an important team is in town, call A day of the club, in which even season-ticket holders have to buy a ticket. Even though, in theory, they've already paid to get in. We're talking about league games, obviously.

Well, Getafe have called this game A half-day of the club.

Season-ticket holders have had to pay €30 to get in. Non season-ticket holders are looking at €60 for the cheapest.

In ten minutes, Getafe have caused Barcelona more problems than Rangers did in 180 minutes.

    Still 0-0.

    It could go two ways if he had the No.7;

*The pride and honour of having such a famous squad number could spur him on to great things..

*Or it would put too much pressure on him and his form could suffer as a result of the added pressure and expectation.

I'm for the former. Give the Number 7 to Aiden the next time it is available.

We could all see on the telly that he had a wee joke with Neil McCann as he was preparing to come on - but surely Doogal didn't claim that's what he sent him off for?

Anybody no? Just curious, I'm nippin out to the pub now but will check bakc later in case somebody has an answer.

I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking at length with Aiden's dad at a Celtic function earlier this year. He left me in no doubt that Aiden is determined to be all that we want him to be in a Celtic jersey.

Incidentally Aiden's dad played alongside Jinky at Sheffield United.

This is the reason Getafe are beating them tonight.

Some great banter going between us via email when we drew each other, Dimtry made it to Celtic park for a the game and loved the friendliness and atmosphere.(I've some mobile phone footage he sent me, will try and dig it out)

He's fair chuffed when I tell him a few Celtic fans have placed bets on Spartak to win UEFA and the fact we thought so highly of his team. We always manage to meet up at least once a year in Amsterdam, even been out here a couple of times to watch my local team Utrecht(I prefer Feyenoord, for the record) as he visits Spain and Italy regular to see football and makes a point of dropping by.

I believe he told me they have a statue of Mostovoi outside Celta Vigos' ground, which gives him a lot of pride also.

Agree that Zurawski has been a massive letdown after a promising start.

Myself and a mate were discussing this a fews days ago and pondering the fact that, in recent years, some players have started thier celtic careers with loads of promise only to drift out of things. Zurawski, JVoH and Lee Naylor spring to mind.

I think Naylor still has to be considered a good Celtic player. He had a poor start of the season but over the last 5 games or so he has definitely improved and it starting to come onto a game again.

Jan is got a great scoring record but he needs to stop getting injured. I think the same goes for Zurawski as well. If they both can stay injury free they'll prove how good they are. The latter I have doubts about, but I consider Jan a great player.

    Goal in Valencia.

    Valencia 1-0 Murcia.

    Helguera heads home.

    11 minutes on the clock.

Ronnie Koeman is off the mark. He dropped Joaquín and one of the Portuguese players (there are three, I didn't hear clearly which one) who slept in for training.

The quote from Koeman was that after a couple of days he could see things that he didn't like at all. "There needs to be order, on the field and off it," he said.

  • At 10/11/07 21:15, Celtic_First said…

    Fair point Sean.

I was comparing their promise vs their current form. Both Lee and Jan looked like they had the potential to become great signings.

However, in my view, they would struggle to get a game if there was real competition for places in their respective positions.

Where would Jan have figured in the pecking order if we still had Henke, Chris S and John H ? (in their prime)

Great stuff. I look forward to your plans for Rangers, which one of your predecessors as moderator regarded as having become a bit of a problem, seeing as how a vocal proportion of the Rangers support seemed to see itself as "the foot-soldiers in the front line of Protestantism", but just gave everyone a bit of a showing up the whole time.

Aha .... the Rangers, ever a thorny problem that one

Firstly I have already put in place measures dissociating the Govan club from the royal family (admittedly at her majesty's request following some shameful shenanigans in Iberia)- these may have been noticeable in the last couple of days.

Secondly Tony Blair has offered himself as an intermediary in the days follwing his long overdue inception into Their One True Church, As Formed At The Last Supper And From Which They Have Never Deviated. Tony will be Broxi, Cherie will be Mammy and Leo will be Wee Baby (happy feast day Leo)if he can fight Bazza off.

Thirdly those horrible socks will have to go. The red tops will be replaced by pink tops as the Gers take to the field to the strains of Tiptoe Through The Tulips.

Fourthly the perceived Neo-Nazi fanfare and flag display greeting the team as they enter the battlefield will be changed. Rainbow coalition banners and peace movement flags will be borne by Girls Brigade leaders in uniforms dating from the 1920s to date. Those leaders will be female and slim. I will personally inspect said leaders before kick-off.

Fifthly - flute-addled war tunes and world war soundtracks will be replaced by a selection of hymns from the pen of Rev Faber. These will, of course, include Faith of Their Fathers.

    Howzat fur starters.....

It's impossible to convince these people that they did anything wrong.

They will react with astonishment if Rangers get through and draw another Spanish team and the authorities in Seville, Madrid or Valencia protest, even before a ball is kicked or a monument defiled.

They will never learn. You can try to explain, but it's like we don't speak the same language. You'll never get through.

Every Scottish journalist knows what happened in Barcelona. It is all over the web and the guys on celticminded among others have posted it to them.

I would guess you all know some of the excuses put forward as to why it was not unacceptable...

" They should have provided more toilets for us, they knew we would be standing about and would need to urinate."

" They should have put on a fanzone, that's what we did in Glasgow."

" We pumped millions of euro's into the local economy, so how can they complain when they need to tidy up?"

" We are no different to Celtic fans and Scotland fans, they drink and are loved, we drink and the conspiracy against us is presented."

How about they didn't want you there because they know what you are like, and offered no encouragement. You turned up anyway, and instead of holding your drink/bladder/mouths, you went and urinated, defiled, vomited, drank, sang obscene songs and caused intimidation wherever you roamed.

If Barcelona fans had come and urinated over Ibrox and an Orange lodge, there would have been riots.

    Oxymoronic?

I'll be staring at 50 when that shindig wipes its feet.

Who knows how broad and labyrynthine the parcel of rogues' gallery will be by then?

Pockets will be lined and fleeced by rote, only this time, unlike the travesty of 'our' parliament building, the captains of industry that are the free market economy will be bringing along their 'lang spoons' to sup at the table. What price McDonald's Boulevard? Subway Way? Starbuck's Strasse?

And big chubby Salmond will be smiling all the way there, claiming bragging rights. Freezing the Council Tax rates that will in turn stop new schools being built, whilst inventing new 'Scottish' holidays that will make us feel good about ourselves as we dig out the saltire, waving it valiantly to strains of the 'Braveheart' soundtrack - whistling past the graveyard. Fiddling whilst Rome burns.

The money will come. Yes. And the money will go too. It is not a constant. The free market economy is, in itself, mercurial. When the competitors and tourists have passed on - what chance the Costa Coffee shop stays busy, or the Harry Ramsden's remians stowed?

Or maybe they intend to build a 'millenial village' post games just like they did with the dome - oh no wait a minute that didn't actually come to fruition did it? The dome sits now as a living testament to mammon, replete with pizza bars and Frankie & Bennie's and so on and so on - because in the future we must spend.

At least we can sleep safe in the knowledge that at the very least, at the and of the day, God will save the Queen.

Hope the wean gets well soon.

Curly Junior who is now at Abertay Uni has asked for . . . . cash! He is the one that has no interest at all in fitba, even sitting through the Sporting Lisbon friendly a couple of years ago, playing games on his phone! Pah, tried my best, must have been his mother's influence, etc, etc.

Curly Junior Junior, different story - loves Celtic, almost has as many tops as I do, and is coming down for the Sheepies game with me.

I am of course immensely proud of both of them, and love them both to bits, as any father would.

Unfortunately, once queenie pops her clogs, lugs will be there to continue the line, closely followed by one or the other of the loons, and then their offspring will be to the fore. The only way to get rid of this mob is to have a revolution, then get them working in one of the fast food outlets in Subway Way.

    This happened today in 1978

    Scottish Premier League

November 11th at Hampden Park (Megiddo unavailable)

    Rangers 1 Celtic 1

    0-0 HT

    1-0 Lynch (52)
    1-1 A Forsyth (55 pen - don't all die of shock now)

    Bad Guys :

    McCloy, Killer, Sardine, T Forscyth, A Forscyth, McLean;
Russell, A MacDonald, Watson, Johnstone, Duffield.

    Good Ghuys :

    Baines, Fillipi, MacDonald, Edvaldsson, Lynch, Aitken;
    MacLeod, Burns, Provan, McAdam, Doyle.

    Att - 52,330

From The Celtic Football Companion :

' Celtic had the edge in attack. Rangers were much the better organised at the back. Rangers sprang a couple of surprises at the start. They had Johnstone up front and Alex Miller at right-back and Sandy Jardine sweeping behind Tom Forsyth. Celtic had three Old Firm debutants in their side - MacLeod, Provan and Baines. They opened the scoring with a brilliant effort involving MacLeod and Andy Lynch. MacLeod split the Ibrox defence with a perfect pass inside the box, and there was Lynch in the open space to steer the ball past McCloy. Rangers hit back furiously and 3 minutes later they were level from the penalty spot. Edvaldsson handled a Johnstone header and Alex Forsyth stepped up to score his 4th penalty goal of the season.'

The point gained would be pivotal in the grand sceme of things come the end of the season.

Wonder how many pennos Forscyth would have had by the end of the season ? He was averaging around one conversion every three games up till the match above so we could expect around 15.

I picture Duffield alone in a room - panicky, bleary eyed. His mind haunted and taunted by equal measure with the notion that out there, beyond that room, in the ether almost... people wish him sacked... Their feelings taking
shape as a mantra, coursing through the synaptic lanes of his mind, an ever increasing echo, rebounding off of the roof of his skull...'Sack Duffield'...
    'Sack Duffield'...
    'Sack Duffield'...
    'Sack Duffield'...
    'Sack Duffield'...

That penalty was the fourth time that season that Forsyth had scored from the spot in the League.

It also made him their top scorer in the League putting him one ahead of somebody called G Smith.

Amazingly enough, that Hampden penalty was the last time they scored from the spot that season.

I don't know if they missed any - unlikely due to the amount of practice.

Some other interesting anniversaries around this time

    8 Nov 1980

Bobby Lennox retired after 571 appearances and 273 goals.

Was, and still is, a fabulous ambassador for Celtic.

Twice scored 5 goals in a game.

    9 Nov 1965

Bobby Murdoch made his Scotland debut in the 1-0 victory v Italy at Hampden in a World Cup qualifier.

    Same again next week please.

Bobby got 12 caps, 5 more than James McGrory.

    9 Nov 1985

Mark McGee made his debut at Ibrox .

    A day best forgotten (0-3)

Tony Mowbray made his debut v Aberdeen at Celtic Park.

    Thanks for the huddle Tony.

    10 Nov 1971

Kenny Dalglish made his Scotland debut v Belgium at Pittodrie.

For me Kenny just pips Jinky and Henrik as our best player in recent history.

    11 Nov 1963

Frank Haffey broke his ankle v Partick Thistle in a Glasgow Cup tie at Firhill.

He never played for Celtic again.

Frank was one of my Celtic heroes and a very good singer too.

    brilliant stuff.

I agree re KMD being the best of the modern era (or is our era no longer considered 'modern'), definitely the most versatile player of the three nominations (I also adore the other two). My hero and a brilliant guy in my experience. He's on my keyring and was nearly on my daughter's christening locket - me on one side and MrsWG on the other, I got caught trying to replace MrsWG's photo wi a pic of KK.

    Cue the retaliation.

    this is from the bbc-

Italy football fan dies in fight

A football fan has died during fighting between rival supporters in northern Italy, police say.
The violence broke out at a motorway restaurant near Arezzo in Tuscany.

The victim, a fan of Rome's Lazio, was apparently shot in a clash with supporters of Turin-based Juventus, Italy's Ansa news agency reported.

Prime Minister Romano Prodi said the episode was "very worrying". In April his government introduced a law aimed at stamping out football hooliganism.

It was enacted after a policeman was killed in rioting at a match in Sicily in February.

Lazio and Juventus were not due to play against each other on Sunday.

Lazio was scheduled to face Inter Milan - in a game that has now been suspended - and Juventus is up against Parma.

Bobby Lennox's strike rate of a goal every 2 games made him priceless and one of the all time Celtic greats.

Of course the fact that Bobby scored a hat-trick at Ibrox in a 4-0 victory in August 1966 should mean canonisation is in order.

    Can you arrange?

Incidentally, the Scotsport cameras were at that game and the highlights were shown the next evening.

I have never seen them since, maybe the film has been lost in the archives....or burned!.

Talking of archives and Bobby Lennox, one of the themes running in the letters page of the Celtic View at the time was the need for us to sign a class "inside forward" (a (Bertie) auld haun expression).

One writer opined that "Lennox and Gallagher would never make the grade"

Supporters...what do they know about football?

Noel, thanks for those 1969 memories, a wonderful day!

Spartaks 2 - 1 win wasn't enough to stop Zenit, who also won, from taking the Russian title.

Lubo, shirt numbers cannot be changed without invalidating all the shirts sold to fans with:

    “McGeady

    on the back.

Gordon, it is fascinating that a Celtic supporter from 1966 felt so strongly that Bobby Lennox would not “make the grade” that he went to the trouble of writing to the View.

I bet I know what his sons were saying about Aiden last season and Evander now.

Interesting also that the View published the letter.

Spartak winning 3-1 home and away, to go along with a 2 - 1 away win in one of the cups, drawing another.

One extra draw done the title in the end, GD was only +2 in favour of Zenit.

    Just no justice:(

    Paul,

In many ways the letters page of the View in the early years was the most interesting feature of the paper.

A real insight into how the Celtic supporters of the day were thinking.

    sdstim...

Bobby would have even more goals disallowed for "offside".

After the Ron Yeats testimonial in 1974, Bobby Charlton, who played for Celtic that evening, famously said that he "could have played forever with Lennox in my team".
