*me too and although I cringe at the saying "I know how you feel", actually I do.
It's unrealistic to say that one disease is worse than others; it's the one that affects you that causes most grief.
I've lost my father, brother and mother-in-law to cancer, different types as well and my mother and father-in-law to Dementia and IMHO Dementia/Alzheimers has got to be the cruelest.
My mother was a pretty intelligent woman who studied politics and history and thrived on reading and watching both.
The last time I saw her she was up in the Vale Hospital and sitting in the common room watching tele, a show about stately homes in Britain was on and I thought great something interesting for her to while the time away, that's until someone changed channels to the Flintstones and she never noticed.
I suppose that and the fact she couldn't remember my name said it all for me. I must admit I was glad tae see her go tae join, in her mind I suppose, my da up in that Bonnie Banks in the sky.
She's gone 6 years now and not a day goes by that I don't think about her.
My father-in-law was a great Celtic man, war veteran tae and spent time in the concentration camps, not death camps I hasten to add, but the ones for political and high profile prisoners, his time there was because he kept escaping, he eventually got away and helped liberate the death camps with the Americans who had “captured” him while on the run.
Big man not so much in height but stature we knew he had problems when he said while watching a game on tele that the wee winger was a good wee player, that winger was wee celtmasoul mccann.
He was over here on the 60th anniversary of WWII breaking out, it was November and this is a big month over here, they really never forget their war veterans and it was on the tele for days leading up to the 11th, he was glued to it.
The day he was leaving to go back my brother-in-law who had accompanied him over said as the cases were being packed in the car, “time to go da”, he replied with a concerned look “am I going back to Germany”, “naw Dumbarton” was the reply and his demeanor changed. Lot of lump throats in the house that day.

Well played Dr Dupont.
Well played Aiden. It takes a lot for a young man to admit where his weaknesses lie and to have the determination to eradicate them.
Let's hope Celtic get dividends from both these assets for many years to come.
-
Well played Celtic for having the sense to bring in Dr Dupont. The improvement in McGeady is there for all to see. Here's hoping it continues and that others may show a similiar improvement.
Well, that's the nerves started for tomorrow night.

Apologies all for Celtic Quick News being down today.
I believe Blogger had problems everywhere. I spent a while trying to sort things, found it too frustrating and gave up. Thankfully I am not making money out of this stuff, it's stressful enough as it is.
-
Great article Paul.
This kind of stuff is what makes this the best Celtic site on the net.
I noticed McGeady looking frighteningly fast on Saturday - now I know why.
-
Apologies also for the dreadful spelling and incomprehensible prose in the first draft of the above, I have been copying and pasting like mad all afternoon and ended up with an early version going live.

What happened to the post I noticed on Blogger, I noticed before it went down completely, from Steadward67 who noted that he wants to see Celtic get beaten so that we get rid of Strachan... From what I could gather, because of his stubbornness for playing his 'favourites' and if memory serves, because you just don't like him!
Why would you want to get rid of a successful manager, Steadward?
Some supporter you are!
-
Very informative Paul, greatly enjoyed reading this article.
On 2 separate oaccasions yesterday Celtic fans have mentioned to me "...is it just me or has Aiden got faster?"
This helps to explain.
Aidan for me, is by far the player with :
a) the greatest potential at the club
b) The most raw, natural ability at the club
Only Naka comes close, and he is at the peak of his career.
For the record, I think Aiden's most fullfilling position for us will not be on the flanks, but in a forward central role. (think AC Milan away last year).
Still too early in his development to play regularly in this position, but as his strength & speed improves this is his destiny position.
-
No, it's re-appeared... 12:29
Apparently it's because he's a wee @rse!
Now there's a reason to want your own team to get beat!
-
Paul - when I first saw the DuPont headline I thought it was something to do with how much of the abuse he gets sticks to Aiden.
I bet he runs even faster with no abuse flung at him:-)
-

beat me to it mike, i cannot believe steward67, a celtic supporter, hope the hoops get beat so as to get rid of the manager. His last statement also proclaims to be from the whole celtic support, although WGS not universally popular a quick straw poll in here would show up that statement.
How arrogant to believe you represent a worldwide fanbase.
Yes our manager makes mistakes, helluva lot less than the likes of mccari, barnes, brady, burns etc..
Persoanlly feel it is very naive that just because WGS is making comments in public that the players are being told a very different message. From what i hear WGS has went through the players a number of times closed doors but talked them up to media.
Just when MON was giving it all about the benchmark and we're years away from rangers, he was telling the dressing room the opposite.
Some people need to stop forming their opinions from chip shop wrappers.
What are you judging the manager on steward67, trophies or press cuttings and interviews?
-
paul - i keep diving into this site to engage in discussion/debate with fellow celts (and Edward). But i just realized i never actaully respond to the guy kicking off the discussion.
Thanks for the best Celtic site in the world - i'm sure i speak on behalf of all the bhoys and visitors - you do a remarkable job which spreads to more than just football.
celtic forever!!
-
Paul excellent article, I always thought that the only part of Aiden's game missing was his pace, hence his ability to push the ball by the defender and pick it up on the other side.
Let's just hope that when it rains it Snos too!

Can't possibly believe that any true Celtic supporter would want to see Celtic lose for any reason(well, just to totally contradict myself, I wasn't exactly phoning the Samaratins when we lost to Hearts to deny the Huns the CL spot 2 seasons ago).
TLB- teflon, was that what Kenny Miller rubbed on his boots?
-
-
Paul, a very interesting article, thanks.
I am an Aiden McGeady fan, always have been, because he has that something different to offer, something you can coach into a players game.
To blossom into a great player I always felt he needed another yard of pace. It looks like he has found it.
Tully57 I am in complete agreement with your a) & b) and Aiden's eventual position. I hope it's with Celtic.
-
-
-
-
I am an Aiden fan, but there have been a number of obvious shortcomings to his game for some time.
1) Lack of pace, meaning he often has to beat his man several times, by which time the rest of the defence has arrived.
2) Lack of strength, meaning he is often muscled off the ball by less talented opponents.
3) Lack of awareness of what is going on around him - tendency to run with his head down.
4) Some lack of the kind of footballing intelligence that tells top players when to release the ball and where to play the killer pass (despite - contrary to what some would tell us - clearly having great ability in his passing execution).
It has been noticeable this season that the first two shortcomings have been addressed. He has looked stronger right since the start of the season, and during the course of the year his increased pace has also become apparent.
If he can address the remaining two issues (and those skills can be cultivated) the only problem left will be figuring out how the hell we can hang onto him.
Well done Greg DuP. Well done Aiden.

confuscious say dont post when under the influence
5th and last attempt
I think it´s important that these modern aspects of the training regime are properly assessed and the methods that work are further developed and those that aren´t are ditched. Bang for buck. Maybe some midrift medicine ball work is just the ticket for Donati and Jarosik. The Lisbon Lions used Barrowfield etc.
I would love to know what WGS take on the likes of this
http://www.pzfootball.co.uk/newsletters/Pz%20Newsletter%20May%2007.pdf
Do we use such technology if not .. then why not ?
Maybe if Aiden would wear one of these secretly
http://petsafe-warehouse.com/dogtrainingcollars/electric_dog_training_collars.htm
and WGS was to send a signal after he´s beaten the third man to pick up his head and make his choice knowing that if it´s not a good delivery he will get another shock. Who know´s we might have the best player that Ireland has produced since Liam Brady ... sorry Roy :-)
I enjoyed the statistics that were given on screen when we played Benfica. How many Km´s the player has run so far in this game. I think if we could see this information say at half time on a big screen would add to the entertainment. Other professional sportsmen are also so much under the microscope I feel that it would be a good thing.
-
Cheers Ardoch,
I would be amazed (not to say totally gutted) if it wasn't with Celtic.
-
hoopla 1906,ah think that Aiden has the lot.
I dont beleve that Aiden lacks awareness anymore, or the football intelligence when to play the killer ball.
Just about every great player will still occassionally not pass it when he should or see the pass on for that matter.
Aidens pass recently for Lee Naylor 1st half against Motherwel was as fine a pass as you will ever see and only special players can see then execute such a move.
As you say if he keeps improving how do we keep him ?
-
Not Aiden related - Wee Scotty,
Caught a couple of minutes of the interview with him after the Killie match, Scott MacDonald sounds like he has played for Celtic for his entire playing career, the guy is 100% committed.
Would be great if he had played for Celtic all his days, Black Sunday would not exist.
Too early to say that he has filled the void left behind by Henrik's departure, but the early signs are really good.
As long as he keeps fit we'll be just fine, mind you it would be good to see the goals being spread around a wee bit, hopefully Aiden will start helping him out soon.
-

Gregory Du Pont left these for you.........

No pundit, I'm nevertheless preening myself remembering that my first, or possibly second, post last week made just this point about Aiden's change of style and addition of speed to his weapons chest. Never mind Dupont, I somehow now feel that I'm responsible for his improvement!
I also posted on the subject of the unbelievable number of free kicks that were awarded against us at home against Dundee United, 23 or so. The following week against Rangers it was 21. I notice that their "crime count v Inverness was, wait for it... 3! Three fouls in 90 minutes? Is this part of the masterplan?
My sympathy to you, Discybhoy. My own dad died on March 28th. It's hard.

paul67...do you think that Dupont will be able to assist JK to compensate for his dodgy knee
also he should have a look at JVOH as there is clearly something wrong with his running ore something as he always gets injured and none of his injuries are from tackles ... a bit like Phil O`D but thankfully not as bad

I'd love it if Mr DuPont could help speed up a few more of our players the way he has Aiden, though going by the way Scott Brown runs all day i think the science technology guys up at the training centre have been putting Scott through the Ivan Drago workout.I think he gets filled up with unleaded before each game.
Om the subject of the training centre, has anyone been up to Lennoxtown to see the new place. It's looking cracking & i'm sure that all that fresh country air will be helping our Bhoys.

Default Definitive answer to France Billet Situation
1 We are not getting our tickets from the agency in Barcelona.
2 I have spoken to France Billet and the agency Travel Connection and they both confirm the same thing.
3 If you would like to receive a refund you have to email:
info@football-prestige.com
Stating name, address, telephone number and original order number from your confirmation emal from France Billet, mine starts E7E8K and is 12 characters in total.
4 This email address is NOT France Billet's email address it is a ticket broker/tout in Barcelona who buys tickets from FC Barcelona.
I hope this answers all your questions and try your luck if you wish but I will be spending my time looking for a tciket from a tout or drinking more!"
Seems that there is going to be at least 2000 ticketless "bears" skulking the streets of Catalonias capital.
With the official allowance only 5000 tickets and rumours of 15-20,000 Rangers fans arriving for Wednesday-
I see trouble ahead.........

Well if Aiden managed an extra yard of pace then I'm sure that Boydy and Bazza will get 2 extra yards if you believe the following sports research (from the Herald Sports diary- so maybe not 100% accurate in depicting the research).
"Meanwhile, in further booze and sport-related news, a scientific study has proven what the Sports Diary long suspected: bevvy is good for you. Professor Manuel Garzon of Granada University found that beer after exercise helps dehydrated bodies retain liquid better than water.
Fizzy lagers could also quench thirst faster than still drinks because CO2 bubbles may speed up the absorption of fluids. Further evidence that Bazza, Boydy et al were right to challenge PLG's ridiculous Jonny Foreigner attitude to refuelling."
I'm off to the fridge for some training.

The Pookah said:(Today)
Remarks, on the disconcerting, Rule 17.
No one can be bound by an EMPLOYMENT, Contract.
It is against the Civil Liberties of any individual to be subject to the onerous burden of Enslavement.
Therefore, all contracts are, in fact, only worth the faith that is placed in them by both parties.
Contracts DO work, but only if it is in the interest of both Parties concerned.
In Hollywood, contracts are amended, abrogated, broken, ignored, abnegated and trashed, not infrequently.
It is a fertile field, eagerly ploughed, by Attorneys.
In summation:
The Webster case shall test the resolve and determination, of Hearts F.C., in pursuing it's litigation against the Player involved.
It can be a costly and unprofitable business for both of the parties.
Hearts F.C. are not odds on, winners.
A better solution, will be found in a compromise, which I believe will be the case.
Arthur is entitled to take the same route.
That is no moot point.
I believe that Arthur will not choose that avenue.
However, he could if he wished.

The only Mr Dupont I've ever heard of is the one Sandie Shaw warbled about in bare feet in the 60's? Are they by any chance related?
-
Great article Paul. Have always tayght Aiden was a star in the making, he's starting to prove it now.
On a different matter. Do you think Milan will give Celtic extra tickets on the day of the game on Dec 4th just as they did last season because ive just booked flights over to the game?
-
Winningemmell - Your 17:37 etc suggests that those long winter evenings must just fly by in ML2. Quality.

Back from my cream puff !!!
McGeady and McDonald are key men for tomorrow. They are potentially the only ones who can create and score. There can be no lone striker tomorrow as this will play into Benfica's hands. I anticipate that they will come out all guns blazing and we must attack to counter and ultimately snuff out that tactic. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we saw a similar match to last season.
However, as ever with our European matches (and also SPL although we seem less inclined), we need to be sharp and on top of the opposition as soon as they have the ball.
Finally, is there anyone out there in Paris who fancies an 11s match on Saturday morning at stadium near Eiffel Tower ? I'll provide more details to anyone seriously interested.

Read the article about Aiden and Dupont, it was a bit out of the blue, but that is the beauty of this site, on a slow day you find something extremely interesting to talk about.
Which brings me to my take on the matter. I have no idea of the going rate of pay for someone of Dupont's occupation and reputation, so I am going to just wildly speculate and say he makes 100k a year.
If in five seasons, he improves noone else apart from Aiden, but in that time helps him realise the potential he has, and turns him into one of our greatest players, then some may see that as a failure. But for me, £500k would not buy you a player the likes of which Aiden can become, and for that, Dupont has already repaid far more than his salary.
-
Timbhoy86, cheers. Good luck in Milan, I suspect you will be successful, but there is always concern until you are in your seat.
Lawyers for our friends Shakhtar are in the middle of a broken contract situation themselves; we live in changing times.
-
I think that Aiden has got all he skill in the world and is improving all the time.
I can't help thinking that we might encourage the best out of him if we were to sing his name now and again. For far too long, the only time I have heard this young man's name being shouted it is usually preceded by "for f##k sake!!!" when he has misplaced a pass - after being the best man on the park for the previous half hour.
Young McGeady is our most consistently creative player. Naka doesn't do it as often as he could or should. Let's give the lhad some encouragement. Any songsmiths out there care to compose a ditty?
Starryhope
-
Timbhoy86 - you can buy tickets in the bank in Milan - I forget the branch (someone here will know) but they've been available last 2 times in Milan.
Discybhoy - all our thoughts are with you and your family. Times like this you realise that Celtic are your extended family.
On the topic of JR - I had the misfortune to read Leggat in the People (we are ra) yesterday - they are just waiting for Celtic fans to have a go -
"Of course there are those within the club who must share some of the responsibility for this state of events being allowed to fester and burgeon into these preposterous war criminal rants.
For they have often appeared to this observer to have encouraged Celtic supporters to think of themselves as not just special, but actually morally superior" - ??!! Seriously you couldnae make it up - they are just dying for this to blow up and whilst some have issues with JR as Chairman given his past any open show of demonstration or accusation against him will be leapt upon and will be national and international news detracting once again from the thing that matters most - the team on the park and results. Celtic's heritage and history has always meant that we have a left wing, anti-establishmentarian core of supporters - it's one of the reasons that we have such a large following in Europe from teams like St Pauli - it's one of the reasons that we're unique (no Mr Leggat we don't think we're morally superior we ARE) but for the sake of the team if you want to protest write to the SSM, speak up at the AGM, but don't use match days - these are for supporting the team "faithful through and through" - you'll fall into their trap!! (I know I AM paranoid).
Cannae wait for the morra night - no predictions I'll jinx us, Hail! Hail! DavieL

I think you are right, there is trouble brewing and full well they know it.
By virtue of the Setanta package I just took in the last 20 mins of the Ibrox Hour, or whatever they call it, and for the whole time it was interviews with Martin Bain, Kenny Scott (Security) and John Bomber Brown trying to convince themselves how cuddly, welcoming and friendly the Rangers supporters are, their enhanced reputation, UEFA delighted, etc.etc, the stench of fear and look of nervousness on Bain and Scott's coupons were obvious.
"Bomber" Brown blames the Villareal and Osasuna police for previous blips in an otherwise unblemished record, which is as predictable as his playing style.
Scott confirms that since he has joined the club he has saw nothing but good behaviour- clearly he was not at Inverness or understands the meaning of the unspeakable campaign they wage in.
Wednesday could be a watershed in the Huns' future European aspirations, I have no concern or otherwise for them but I fear for further damage to our reputation as a nation in the eyes of the rest of Europe.
On a more important subject, would like WGS to put out a flexible formation tomorrow, 4 at the back, or, if they play with 1 up front push GC into the holding position and release PH into a more forward role. Gung Ho is not the way to go tomorrow but a draw is no use and we need to be adventurous, and I am convinced Benfica are there for the taking.
C'mon the Hoops!

If any of you lucky enough to be going to the match tomorrow happen to come accross any Benfica supporters be sure to give them a warm welcome. Of course I know thats guarenteed.
Over in Lisbon recently myself and my Br. in Law met up with 5 of their fans after the game. They basically befriended us and took us all around the old quarter (Bairro Alto) to virtually every bar ...and there were many.
Fantastic people, as were all the Lisbonites (?) we met.
Of course the Celtic fans once again showed why we are welcomed in all major cities throughout Europe
(Apart from the Scottish ones that is)
So if you see any of the Benfica lot you can shout 'Kissing an eagle' which is a slogan they use about the eagle on their club crest.
-
Ronaldinho isn't yet 100% fit, he says tonight in an interview on Barça TV.
Zambrotta is a big doubt for their game on Wednesday.
The local police, known by the Catalan name Mossos d'Esquadra, are gearing up the visiting support. No one there has forgotten Pamplona, Villarreal, the damage in Benidorm before that game or, needless to say, what happened the last time Rangers came to Barcelona.
Let's hope they all behave themselves.
-
Benfica's big doubt is left-back Léo.
I bet he plays. I don't think he's been hampered too much in training.
Goalkeeper Quim signed a new extended contract today. Isn't that when a player's form usually goes right off the boil?
Let's hope so.

The Pookah said "No one can be bound by an EMPLOYMENT contract"? Sorry but could not be more wrong. What on earth do you imagine countless court cases between employees and employers have been about?
Any company tearing up an employees contract would promptly and properly be sued for breach. If you and or the Pookah want chapter and verse I'm happy to supply. Therefore can we accept that at least one party, the employer, is bound to honour an employment contract.
This is not a one sided arrangement and employment contracts require certain behaviours on employees. In industries where individuals can be highly prized these conditions can focus very much on termination of employment. I have seen contracts in certain instances where people are prohibited from taking up employment with a competitor for up to ONE YEAR. Enforceable? You had better believe it.
The only thing the Pookah said which had any validity was the observation that "It can be a costly and unprofitable business for both of the parties".
Even the observation that Arthur is entitled to take the Webster route is flawed. It may have escaped his attention that Arthur cannot use FIFA regulation 17. Why? Article 16 states that "A contract cannot be unilaterally terminated during the course of a
Season." The third anniversary of Arthur's contract, which he must reach to use article 17, is October 2008. He would not therefore be able to exercise any Article 17 termination until May 2009. Celtic have a contractually binding clause enabling them to exercise retention for a year beyond that point. There would be an legal argument at that point for sure if Arthur did take that route but what is not in dispute is that there would be a legal case to answer. What would stop another club from taking a chance on a legal outcome you ask? The small matter of any club found guilty of inducing a breach of contract being "Banned from registering any new players, either nationally or
internationally, for two Registration Periods".
Sorry there is a second point in which I agree with the Pookah. I too do not believe Arthur will go down that road. But he couldn't however much he wished to.

Watched Man City v SundIreland last night. Worse then any SPL match I've seen. EPL, you're having a laugh !
On a more serious note. Seems that the Strathclyde police have been in touch with the Gardai in Limerick, informing them of the imminent arrival of 50 hun "casuals" today. They are using the Shannon/Gerona ryanair flight for the Barca game in the morning. If you are going out to watch the game tonight in the Shannon/Limerick area, be careful, this is a serious message. These fella's would like nothing better then a bit of "entertainment", before dissapearing tomorrow morning.

Interesting stuff re Du pont, the days of the medicine ball and rope climbing appear to be restricted to the murray park mob :).
Aiden for me has improved in two areas, his short bursts of speed have improved and his ability to stand his ground in the adversity of the kick and crunch brigade, (see murray park above).
If Aiden was to spend some time being coached by the king of kings in how to improve his net bulging percentage, then I do believe we will have as near to a world class player as one can have in Scotland.
I would expect it to be a 4-4-2 formation tonight. WGS not making any subs on Saturday, especially in regards to JVOH says to me he was making sure he got 90 minutes under his belt before tonight. Lets hope it pays off and JVOH can return to scoring.

"The landmark meeting at which the decision was taken to form the Celtic Football and Athletic Club was held in St Mary's Hall on 6 th November 1887, with John Glass presiding.
Glass was in business as a joiner, a member of St Mary's and a leading figure in Glasgow Irish political circles.
His commitment and imaginative approach to the Celtic concept were to prove vital in bringing to fruition and in sustaining it through the early years.
He was to be described by Willie Maley as the man "to whom the club owes its existence" and by J H McLaughlin as "the originator and motivator" of Celtic."
from "Celtic - A Century With Honour by (our very own) Brian Wilson.
The start of an incredible journey.
Happy Birthday Celtic?

Morning all,
Glorious autumn morning here in Salford. Just off up home for the match. Hope it is just as glorious at Parkhead tonight.

The real challenge for the good Doctor and the rest of the Boffins at BLT will be to find some speed for ESno; now he looks slow and cumbersome but put a tiger in his tank and he could be a real handfull. Momentum=mass x velocity and it is momentum that decides the outcome in a lot of midfield challenges.
Anyways,I don't think he's Irish but Wiki gives us St Leonard; patron saint of horses. Shoeless Joe certainly invoked his protection on his recent trip to ML-Deux.

Gordon-I remember in'The Glory and the Dream'Campbell and Woods suggesting that the Club should be regarded as beginning in 1887, rather than the usual 1888.
From what you've posted it may be time to give Mr Glass as much prominence in the development of the FOOTBALL Club as Bro Walfrid; he certainly seems to have been the prime mover in making the Club a serious professional undertaking; rather than the altruism of the Poor Childrens Dinner Table.

Although many find it hard to understand as always I wish you well when playing in Europe. I can't see you getting the 3 - 0 win some have mentioned but don't see anything to stop you getting a single goal win.

I think that there is a strong case for recognising 1887 as the founding year of Celtic.
(well the year does have a "7" in it if nothing else!)
There is perhaps an even stronger case for more prominence to be given to John Glass in the club's hall of fame.
Good luck to the Celts tonight.
Memo to our captain, Stephen McManus :
Remember to shout "Heads!" (twice)when the referee tosses the coin.
That should bring us good luck!

I'll get this one out early doors.
Tonights team should be the same starting XI as the Killie game. I can see no reason to tinker with personnel or formation. To do so will be a mistake. IMHO.
Done.

Thanks for the insight Paul, it´s great to hear that Aiden is getting support & advice on how to improve. Players will not retire so early as before and Aiden has many years ahead of him. He needs to develop his body and mind.
Muhammad Ali once said;
I hated every minute of training, but I said, ''Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.''

José Antonio (total Francoist name, by the way)Camacho says he's worried about the youth of many members of his squad and has warned them that this will be a man's game.
"They'll need to put their foot in every bit as hard as the Celtic players will," he said.
Translation: They don't like it up them.

PS Evander Slow is a perfect call to join Aiden in speed treatment. Problem is its speed of thought more than physical speed for Sno.

I hadn't realised until today that my wee boy shares his birthday with Celtic. He's 3 today.
I hope it's an omen and he's the new Tully/McGrory/Dalglish/Johnstone/Larrson/McStay all rolled into one.
-
Bambi
No pressure on the wee man then, eh?
Hope he enjoys his birthday.

Spot on! Same team as Saturday for me, which also gives the added comfort that the likely midfield change would involve Donati coming on - and not Sno!

On a lighter note, I am not sure whether it is Celtic supporters or Edward's cohorts who should be laughing at this wee limerick which appeared in the Herald 'Diary' but, personally, I must confess to having had a wee chortle!

Can only access thru Comments - another Blogger problem.
Still, at least there is something to look forward to tonight. As others have said, same team as Saturday will do nicely. I'm going for a two goal win so that we take the head to head. I don't think we will need it to finish ahead of Benfica but it would be nice to have just in case.
-
speed coaches are nothing new
even in the lower divisions
les ferdinand used to have a weights regime for his legs to make him run faster and jump higher
my mate was typically medium paced for a midfielder - boro had a speed coach - her retired faster !

Gordon J
You touch on the big point that I'm trying not think about.
It's fundamental to win the game, by any margin, but here's the thing.
We win by two goals tonight and Milan win in Donetsk.
We then have to win the game against Shaktar at Celtic Park by a better head-to-head margin than they had against us (2-0) to qualify with a game to spare.
The game in Milan would be to see who tops the group.
I know, I'm getting carried away, but it's very important. Even if only to pip Benfica for the UEFA Cup if it comes to that.
-
Agree with Bhoy Molloy et al,
The same starting line-up as saturday and let's get in their faces. Noisy noisy crowd and a real "get right amongst em" attitude. I hate when we are favourites for a game but this is a game we can win, and win well, if our big game players are on form.
Come on the Hoops.
Big Wavy
-
Another way to look at it is this.
Shaktar and Benfica are our direct rivals for qualification (Milan too, but just to keep it simple).
We've played the away legs (2-0 and 1-0) and now it's time for the return legs at Celtic Park.
So in two consecutive games, we've got an away leg deficit to overcome. We can treat each game as a one-off. Succeed in both and we're through. Succeed in one and come close in the other (say beating Shak 1-0) also keeps our options open, but it's exciting to regard them both as knock-out games.
-
celtic_first,
Winning the two home games well would get us through as you say. We need Milan yto win in Ukraine tonight though.
But assuming Milan win and also beat benfica, a draw in Milan would see them win the group and us come second. Now I'm not one to accuse Italians of anything, but......
-
Gordon
What if it suits them better to come second and get a favourable knock-out draw and they let us win.
Now we really are getting carried away.
Basically, Celtic have no control over what happens in Ukraine tonight, so we go into it tonight as a proper cup-tie, looking to eliminate Benfica from the equation.
No harm to them, but it's them or us.
-
Gordon- the argument against promoting Mr Glass is that it reinforces the sad truth that the Club did not resist the entreatments of Mammom for as long as Bro Walfrid, and some current supporters, would have liked. Maybe DDesmond and JReid are'truer to the spirit'of the founding fathers[and Brother] than is comfortable.
Did anyone else hear the excellent radio4 programme today on the newspaper industry'Inside Stories'?
It is being repeated on the Website/Listen Again feature, and is well worth tuning in to. It was dealing with the Mccann Case today-the next time you see another lurid and half-baked headline remember it is worth 25,000 extra daily readers to the bogpapers,at a time when circulation across the board are falling. A nice example of'lazy'journalism is given- the British hacks sit in a bar in Portugal, filleting the local press to send the'story' back to London. Once the stories appear over here the Portuguese think' well it must be true,it's in the London papers' and so the sorry, cruel saga continues.
Next week's episode deals with Svennis and his time in charge of Engerlund. So next time you're standing in the newsagent remember- 'This is rubbish. I don't need this. I've got CQN'

Happy Conception Day, Celtic.
John (the original half full) Glass has a proud legacy.
"He acted on the First Committee as Vice President until 1890 and as chairman of the club from 1890 until 1897, when he joined the Board of the Limited Company and served until his death in 1906."
This is an extract from Willie Maley's The Story of the Celtic, published in 1939.
Incidentally, John Glass is a dead ringer for Lee Naylor, if you took away the beard.
-
definitely would like to see more stats during the game Aw Naw but lets not get to american levels where you can't see the wood from the trees. roll on the 2-0 ( or the 6-4 ) tonight

Who broke the blog?

DBBIA
I heard a bit of that and had the same thought.
It's the knee-jerk of the expiring spaniel. Newspapers are totally desperate to grab people's attention and will stop at nothing to do so.
It made me think about another change, though. When they mentioned some tabloid running a phone-in: "Are the McCann's innocent?", it put into perspective our concerns for the treatment of Celtic.
Suddenly the public is invited to think it has an entitlement to decide if the parents played a role in the disappearance of that wee lassie.
Fancy going through that. It makes Gordon Strachan's job look easy.
-
Just had a look on the fixtures for the Chamions League games on The Sporting Life.
It has our last game against AC,and the Shakhtar v Benfica game as a week before all the other final games.
Is this correct?
And can anyone enlighten me as to why?
-
Kano
Yes. Milan have to go to the World Club championship.
-
Kano,
Because AC play in the World club Championship in December.
On a sadder note, one of the football greats has died today.
Nils Liedholm probably the only Swedish footballer to challenge Henrik as the greatest player his country has produced died aged 85. He played in Milan's famous GRENOLI front line along with Gunnar Gren and Gunnar Nordahl. He also won the scudetto as a coach with both Milan and Roam and lost in the 84 European cup final to Liverpool.
-
Thanks folks.
Time for a kip for me,early rise for the game.
Mon Celtic,we know what we need.
2-0 will do.
Those of you going, let us hear you,and enjoy yourselves.
-
Discybhoy,had a wee read back.
My regards.
-
Can anyone confirm if away goals come into effect in terms of head to head, or is it merely goals scored that counts in the event of even goal difference?
I.e. If we beat Benfica 2-1 tonight, does that give us the upper hand in a head to head with them?
Cheers,
TLW
-
For anyone travelling to Milan for the game in December
A pre-match drinking session and post match lock-in has been arranged, along with a few other events, at a pub in Milan called '4-4-2' in via Procaccini Milano.
One of my mates lives in Milan just now, and has been watching Celtic games there over the past couple of months.
-
TLW
Away goals are in force hence why we automatically qualified by beating Manchester United next year.
To be honest, it doesn't matter tonight as any Celtic victory really makes it difficult for Benfica to feature - given their more difficult last two games. It may be very, very important against Shakthar.

new article posted.
-
- Sorry, just read what I posted, now spelt currectly -
Did anyone hear the Off The Ball Sunday Prog? There was high praise for John Collins and how he handles his Muslim players, allowing special treatment during fasts etc. In fact all SPL ground are now to have areas within the stadiums which will allow the Muslim faithful space for prayer. This was all well and good, however without a hint of irony, Mr Cosgrove went on to slander Boruc intimating he was not faithful and mentioned only the blessing of himself in front of the Rangers fans.
Now as a practicing RC, (without a hint of irony) I agree that religion shouldn't be mixed with football; at least not in the sense that it should cause an offence that people do follow religions; all should be welcome. I also think that racism should be kept our of football, but you can't deny someone their ethnicity; similar for smoking.
My opinion is that Muslim players could go down on their knees in the centre circle and bow to Mecca; that's fine with me. But (and with a large dose of irony) in the name of equity; I look forward to each ground in the SPL having to put in a wee chapel.
