Rationality is left at the turnstiles on Champions League nights

Last night was stressful. With 30 minutes of the game remaining I could quite easily have left the stadium, returned to my car and put on some music for the journey home.

I was aware that an unidentified dread was stalking me. It was not that Celtic would lose or drop points, or that they were playing poorly, they were playing well and looked to have the measure of Benfica, but the satisfaction gained from leading in the game was tempered by something altogether more sinister.

After I got home I realised that I don’t expect Celtic to win the Champions League this season; that ultimately I invest all this emotion and cause myself so much stress, when I am clear in the belief that the project will end in failure, disappointment and inevitable recrimination. Most likely, some player will make a mistake (maybe even 70 yards from his own goal in the San Siro), or the manager will have chosen tactics unsuitable for the opposition, or perhaps a player who would have made all the difference was not purchased in the summer.

Why do we invite stress into our life, even into our leisure activities?

I watched Brian Quinn take his standing ovation from the Celtic fans before kick off yesterday which clearly left him emotional. He has seen it all in his eleven years at the club and I am sure it has brought him fresh avenues of stress along the way. More than once I have heard wealthy Celtic fans say they would be mad to become a ‘player’, in the business sense, at Celtic Park, which may be true. Are those of us who willingly invest time, money and emotion into an adventure we believe will lead to stress and eventual disappointment making a rational choice?

The non-football fans in the world have known the answer to this for some time, but football touches a rudimentary part of the human condition, and thousands of years of evidence can testify that the human condition is seldom rational.

That sinister feeling has gone now. I think I know why I invite all this stress into my life; it’s all in my cave man genes.

Couldn't agree more with your comments regarding our own support.

To many of our fans love to keep the myth of 'the greatest fans in the world' alive, when actually the team only gets complete support when they are winning.
any small mistake and a percentage of the crowd are straight on the players back, a few bad games and some players will never be forgiven.
The treatment of some players from our own so called greatest fans is disgusting. After all the great service Alan Thompson gave us towards the end of his Celtic career Rangers players got better treatment at Celtic park.
Agathe got the same and now I fear Naylor and Sno going the same way.

This is not the Celtic way and these so called supporters should have been around in the days of the darksides nine in a row then they would really have something to moan about.

We have never had it so good. The times will no doubt return one day when we really have something to complain about and some people might just realise that hob nobbing with the likes of Ac Milan and Man U wasn't that bad after all.

I think I said to you before that I questioned my sanity after THAT Spartak Moscow game.

My nerves were tottally shattered during the game and I experienced every emotion during it.

After it, when I got home, I couldn't sleep, I was so over joyed and excited. Yet, had one player, who gets paid a heck of a lot more than me, who I've never met in my life, had missed I'd have been dead upset.

I know there are more important things in life. Celtic and football are not more important than life and death.

Paul, I'm a wee bit older than you. In other parts of our life, we are grown, rational men who have responsibilities.

The fun of football, and Celtic especially, is that it allows us to enter another zone, away from all these responsibilities. We can go back to being a kid for 90 minutes. Meet our mates. Talk fitba.

Yes, there is a stress, but enjoy the ride. It wasn't so long ago stress was beating Airdrie in the Scottish Cup final.

    Michael,

After the Barcelona game in the CL a couple of seasons ago when a section of the Celtic "support" saw fit to boo a certain ex-Celtic player's appearance as a sub for Barca, I have realised that, for all we generally get going when the team requires it (ironically usually a CL home game) the Celtic support has more than a fair share of moron's. See TNBC's comments as an example.

An uncle of mine once described the Celtic support as having more faces than Big Ben. Being a tad younger and naive at the time I felt, and told him so, that the comment was very harsh and outright wrong. But now (if you excuse his technical error) I am sure many of you on here would agree.

But let me gloss over that and just enjoy the fact that once more we have another victory at home in the CL which gives us hope for qualification for the last 16.

TheToke- I always took the booing at the Barca game to be for the player going off, who had done nothing to endear himself to the home support, than for the bhoy coming on; who had chipped in with the odd goal or two hundred in his time with us.

People have always booed at games; because not everyone goes to the game to support the team. God alone knows why they do it, maybe it fills a holw in their lives that is beyond psychotherapy, but they do.

The Sandy McNabs haven't featured in any complaints I've read so far, but people are upset at the disturbances last night.

The fights you may have seen mentioned were internecine.

Also, people just cannot believe how much visitors from these shores drink. In this, at least, we are the same as them.

It seems to affect us in a different way though. We tend to be everybody's pals, but something vainglorious and triumphalist comes out in our separated bretheren.

I'm assuming that if the "Catalonia IS Spain" rumour is true, it's because they think this is actually funny, rather than a royalists' attempt to preserve the integrity of a neighbouring kingdom.

These are sweeping generalisations, I know.

One commentator this morning complained about people coming by the low-fares plane-load and buying up tickets for any part of the stadium, coming in totally bevvied and making a bit of a spectacle of themselves.

"That happened to me last year when Liverpool came," he wrote. "But at least they're quite a peaceful group. Unlike tonight's visitors."

Let's hope it all comes to nothing, but as I said the other day, past misdemeanours in Benidorm, Villarreal, Pamplona, and, especially, Barcelona in 1972, may be receiving little mention in the Scottish press, but nobody in Catalonia this week has forgotten any detail of them.

In last night's Evening Times I came across another example of their inability to come up with anything original- everything has to be a reaction to something we have started. So as we are close to Hamburg giants FC St Pauli the Glaswegian Bar,a hotbed of recidivist Darnelism, is now running a bus to watch SV Hamburg.

Celtic over the last three years or so, is like watching a Barometer.
There are around five different levels anywhere between downright embarrassing to buddy brilliant.
Its a case of insecurely tapping the glass and asking which celtic will turn up today and then go and see
Case in point is lack of any form of consistency which was subject of debate recently.

    Afternoon bhoys,

Don't post or read much anymore as don't have internet access in my new digs in the dirty south(of Spain)so apologies if this has been mentioned.

The darnel's rep certainly precedes them, that's for sure. I'm almost starting to feel sorry for them. Yesterday in AS there was an article regarding todays game with that lot and Barça. Basically saying that tonight is a High Risk game for the Mossos d'Esquadra due to the violent reputation of the Rangers support(their words). The comic element was provided by one of the best fotos I've ever seen; a grotesquely fat rangers fan, face and body covered in tats with a massive gold RFC chain. The caption read - "a Rangers fan"

Today there's an article about their CWC shenanigans which further pushes this Animals rep.
What it comes down to is that the Mossos are expecting trouble and, from my experience, when they expect trouble, they get it. The Mossos are VERY aggressive when the mood takes them. I personally have had my legs beaten with truncheons simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I've seen them beat a kid who must have been about 15 at best. Seen them beat bystanders who were clearly tourists. If there is not some kind of disturbance tonight then the Vatican should investigate the members of the Rangers Supporters Trust for Saints among the ranks.

If all this sounds very smug then it shouldn't. These "people" are mostly Scots and are being described as such(not Brits). It's Scotland's rep which will take a battering.

I'm loath to distract people from actually talking about football, especially on a happy day like today, but there have been important developments last night and today for anyone following the G14/40 saga.

    This from G14's own site.
    ________________________
The G-14 Conference concerning the creation of a new international clubs organisation which was due to be held on 13/14 November 2007 in Brussels has been rescheduled. The Conference is now due to take place in January 2008.

"We were very pleased with the overwhelmingly positive response by invited and indeed non-invited clubs who wished to participate in the G-14 Conference. Clearly the subject of the Conference regarding the creation of a new, independent and international clubs organisation is one which has a strong resonance with Europe's leading clubs. At a time when there are multiple challenges for clubs, the need for such an organisation is more necessary than ever before," confirmed G-14 General Manager Thomas Kurth.

A further announcement will be made about the rescheduled conference in the next few weeks.

"The conference will be a landmark event for the future of clubs organisation and representation at international level," concluded Mr. Kurth.
    ________________________
Nothing of great import there, it would seem. But here's Paul Kelso's take on the situation, from the Guardian website.
    ________________________
The future of the G14 group of major European clubs is in doubt after it emerged that the organisation in its current form is to be disbanded. In a development that could have major repercussions for the balance of power in European football the G14 last night abandoned immediate plans to expand to 40 clubs and cancelled its annual conference, scheduled to take place next week in Brussels. The move came as Peter Kenyon, Chelsea's chief executive, said he would snub any invitation to join the organisation, preferring to exert influence from within Uefa.

The G14 general manager, Thomas Kurth, said last night that expansion plans had been postponed to allow more clubs to put themselves forward for membership, but the Guardian understands that the move was forced by leading clubs as part of a deal struck with Uefa's president, Michel Platini, on the Champions League format.

Platini is thought to have backed down on his proposal to have domestic cup winners enter the Champions League and will instead allow national associations to decide whether entrants should come from league or cup competitions. As a result the top three teams in the Premier League will go directly into the group stage and the fourth-placed side will play two qualifying rounds.

In return the clubs will rebrand the G14 as a new, independent and international clubs organisation, pledged to work more closely with Uefa. The G14 approach has been to threaten breakaway competitions and to back litigation by clubs against governing bodies.

Uefa has effectively outflanked the G14 by inviting leading clubs, including Chelsea who are not G14 members, to join the Uefa Strategy Forum. The forum will discuss the Champions League proposals on Monday.
    ________________________
And here is another article from the Telegraph website.
    ________________________
Chelsea would reject any invitation to join the G14 group of top European clubs, which has put the future of the organisation in serious doubt.

With Europe's biggest teams lining up for a fiht with Uefa over the future format of the Champions League, the G14 had been looking to step up the pressure by expanding their membership from 18 to 40 at a meeting in Brussels next week.

Chelsea were expected to be invited to become the latest Premier League side to join a group which includes Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.

But Uefa are growing increasingly confident that they will secure a peace deal with the clubs at a meeting of their strategy council next Monday.

It is thought that Uefa president Michel Platini has bowed to pressure to drop his controversial scheme to open up the Champions League to the winners of domestic competitions, including the FA Cup.

That will be a major boost to Premier League sides who will now be guaranteed three automatic group places instead of the two they are presently allocated.

The team which finishes fourth in the League will have to go through two rounds of qualifying instead of one.

Uefa are confident of helping establish a new clubs' forum which will effectively spell the end of the G14's expansion plans and any lingering threat of a breakaway Super League.

Last night, in a further blow to the G14's aspirations, Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon revealed that any overtures to join the pressure group would be turned down. "I think European football has changed a lot since the formation of G14," said Kenyon, speaking at the International Football Arena conference in Zurich. "Back then, there was no real dialogue between the clubs and Uefa. Now the situation is different.

"There are a lot of major issues to discuss, and find a resolution to, with Uefa. Our position is that the clubs would best be served by a new independent club body working together with Uefa within the framework that has already been set up in co-operation with them.

"So, if we were to be officially invited to join an expanded G14, I think we would politely decline."

Last week The Daily Telegraph exclusively revealed that Chelsea's London rivals, Arsenal, were calling for a breakaway from Uefa unless Platini backed down over the reforms.
    ________________________
Has UEFA played the "divide and conquer" card successfully yet again? Somehow I don't think we've heard the last of this story.

    Paul,

I remember hearing it one day at Ibrox. A thrilling three all draw began with Andy Thom filling my heart and finished with Andy Goram breaking it. I was still getting to my seats when Thom scored. Many people didn't realise we had scored until we saw 'them' going to take kick-off. (Later, Gerry McNee was not so observant) The celebrations rippled throughout our massed (although I must admit I hadn't been that day) ranks. We were separated from the event by time. But the feeling, and the roar, was exactly the same.

Andy Thom scored against Dundee United at Celtic Park. You know the game, you know the goal, you know the reaction and pandemonium. As it went in I was still recovering from the equaliser. Before the Madness ensued I heard the silence. That beautiful, tiny, indistinguishable, quantum leap. And I just stood, soaking it in, letting the noise and emotion wash over me.

    Frank McAvienne against Dundee United.

Tommy Coyne against Rangers (and then Terry Butcher on the dressing room door)

    Pierre against Airdrie.

    Jorge Cadete from the touchline.

    Jackie McNamara against Liverpool.

    Harald against St Johnstone.

Henrik kept it going against Porto.

Lubo could sing out of his posterior.

Alan Thompson against Barcelona and more than a few times against Rangers.

Scott McDonald was the vocalist against AC Milan.

    And Aiden last night...

In the moments between goals and realisations I am taken back to Thom's goals. To that incredible sound as we race forward from silence to primal.

In that moment we are one.

We are happy clapper and mineshafter.

We are brother, sister, mother, father and in-laws.

We are pro strachan, anti-strachan, free flowing, defensively minded, keeping it on the deck, resorting to the long ball, 4-4-2, 3-5-2, attacking wingback and inside lefts.

We are Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Anglican, Puritan, Friend and Foe.

We are communist, socialist, green brigade, prawn sandwich, fundamentalist, capitalist, Republican, Democrat and Rastafarian.

We are self employed, unemployed, wage slaves.

We are doctors, nurses, stars of stage and screen, plumbers, millionaires, matalan shoppers, accountants, green keepers and everything in between.

We are Mike Galloway, Rudi Vata and Tony Mowbray.

We are Paul McStay, Peter Grant and Andy Thom.

We are Henrik Larsson, Brian McClair and Darius Dziekanowski.

We are Paul Elliot, Didier Agathe and Bobo Balde.

We are Willie Maley, Jock Stein and Martin O'Neill.

We are Brother Walfrid, Fergus McCann and Brian Quinn.

We are last gasp winners, penalty shoot out losers, and European Champions.

We are curling free kicks, diving headers, two yard tap ins, screaming volleys and own goals.

But more, much more than this...

    We Are Celtic.

And that comrade, is why we bring it into our lives.

I have to agree with you on some 'supporters'. I sit almost at the back of 111 and as McGeady accepts his first pass of the night some cretin behind me shouts 'And what are you gong to do tonight ya wee d**k?'. Honest. There was not just the one either. Naylor got the treatment, Big JFK got it tight the whole match also. Where exactly do these guys get off?

I wonder if they were turning up in the midweek crowds of 15,000 for 0-0 draws against the likes of Partick Thistle in the early 90's? On nights like those how we would have dreamed about results and in particular a performance like McGeadys in the Champions League in the type of arena we have now. Back then it was light years away.

I also heard the very short booing of Evander Sno, though none of it from around where I sit (amazingly after all the abuse that had been dished out to others!). I hope whoever did takes a long look at themselves in the mirror.

I though bar the first 20 odd minutes we were fairly comfortable last night whilst playing far from our best. All the plaudits should rightly be bestowed on McGeady for a performance of the highest standard in Club footballs highest stage.

Paul Hartley also must have shown now that he is a first pick alongside Brown in centre-mid. At the start of the season I thought Brown/Donati was the best pair but Hartley has come in and bossed Celtic's midfield. It's great to se the way he has accepted the responsibility and thrived on it. He's now proving to be a very good signing.

All we need now is a 3 goal victory against Shaktar and we should be there!

Without wanting to turn this thread into a "lets have a go at the support", I also was very nearly involved in a bit of boxing that night, in my case because I had a right go at a few eejits near me for booing that certain ex-player. Fortunately there were several other like-minded fans on my side and the eejits were left to sit cursing me (and presumably the player in question)under their breaths!

It still evokes a bitter memory for me, esp when I watched how C.Ronaldo was received by the Sp.Lisbon fans even although he scored the winning goal against them. For all that it was a minority of Celtic "fans" that night, it was still too large a proportion for me!

    Celtic 1st,

I read with interest your comments re. the Catalonians' thoughts re. the Darnelistas, as I listened on TalkSport to a certain reporter - Graham Hunter - who is based in Spain (I actually think he is based in Barca, but can't confirm it) - spouting forth about how, many of the people of Barca would be looking forward to the Orc's visit as they still have fond memories of their previous visit in 1972!!

An interesting Q and A from the Scotsman website

Question: just out of interest..as celtics away form is rightly described as awful..and how we rely on our home form..just wondered if rangers had ever won all 3 home games in the cl..?

    Answer Never.....this is Wattie's 4th CL campaign and has played 11 away games....winning 3.

Wattie has now won a total of 5 from 21 games.

Rangers have played 45 CL games and have won 11 games in total.

Celtic have played 28 CL games and have won 11 games in total.

No Rangers manager has won all 3 home games in the CL....in fact no Rangers manager has won 3 games in the group stage in the same season.

Celtic were the first Scottish club to win 3 group games in the same season....which they've now done twice with Martin O'Neil the first manager...and Gordon Strachan becoming only the second manager to do so.

If we beat Donetsk....Strachan will have achieved this twice in successive seasons.

Let's try to give this interesting statistic the same stamina as Paul's clean sheet discovery!

Graham Hunter is based in Barcelona. He made his name as Terry Venables' interpreter in the 1980s.

Is he Scottish? I've never heard him speak.

I can tell you this. In 2004 after we knocked Barcelona out, Hunter was filing material to the papers back home lauding Celtic's achievement and support.

In that day's edition of El País, his by-line appeared beside an article that was scathing in its criticism of Celtic's tactics and lack of footballing ability.

Tell the people what they want to hear.

    Well said Paul,

I can remember the Man u game at home in last season's campaign, they were gifted the penalty late in the game. I had to turn my back on the hoops and not watch the penalty, as I feared I was going to have a heart attack, Artur saves! and euphoria sweeps over me.

    Therags, excellent writing!

Great result last night Gordon and Co.

Shocking tackle on Brown from a player who had a go 4 times at different players in the previous ten mins!

I watch most of our games at my club and we have the element of "fair weather" supporters a lot of posters are referring to today.

I have absolutely no time for them and let them know when hearing the same s***e coming from their mouths.

Hail to Hail to the "true" supporters and let's get behind them for the last 16!

BTW does anybody know if Scott Brown is OK today?

    Hi Paul

Congrats on your early week profile on Aiden, it was a prescient piece and the fruits of his and DuPont's labours were there for all to see last night. Well observed amigo.

    The Hunger -

oh aye. I think I posted this some time back. A guy who was in my 4H class at St Aidan's has never been into football. He thinks it is madness and he thinks I am among the maddest. He likens the season to the seasons and compares the sport to perennial gardening. He thinks the Celtic fans are the maddest as we can only ever aim to repeat what we achieved in 1967. He does though think the darnelists have a fair bit of landscaping to attend.

    Darnel/Barcelona -

when Celtic played Barcelona in recent years the darnelists went to great pains to highlight the 'fact' that no 'friendship' exists between Celtic and Barcelona, that we could not 'claim' Barcelona as being one of the clubs with whom we have a 'special' relationship. Having espoused this 'fact' they then brought it upon themselves to 'support' Barcelona on account of the 'fact' that they had nothing to with us. Catalonia Is Spain is their way of trying to ingratiate themselves with those whom they consider to be the priest-baiters of Catalonia. I expect my usual flak for this but it is how they see things - Barcelona/Catalonia as a vanguard against what they perceive as the antichrist of right-wing Spanish Francoist Catholicism. Anti-football meets antichrist. After their tomfoolery at Megiddo Barcelona owe themselves a decent performance against the darnel. I hope they surpass Liverpool's most recent record tonight.

They really are showing their true colours in Barcelona. Still, I expect that the Scottish media will have a different take on it tomorrow.

Paul67, good article as always. I asked the same question half way through the second half - why do we do it? At that point we were playing well, but there was always the fear that the equaliser could come out of nothing. And the hope that a second goal would clinch the match.

My answer is that we do it to test our team against the best. We are perhaps a little spoilt turning up most Saturday's thinking how many rather than if we will win. Champions' League games are different. We have to win the league, then qualify just for the right to be there.

And we know that we now have a fearsome reputation at home. Can any club competing in the CL boast a better home record than us right now? We attend these games proud of our record, desperate for it to continue but with just a little apprehension that this might be the game when the record goes. That's where the edge comes from.

Supporting Celtic will always be a rocky ride, with amazing highs and devastating lows. I've seen a fair few of both over the last 35 years or so.

But there's not another team in the world I would rather follow.

"After I got home I realised that I don’t expect Celtic to win the Champions League this season; that ultimately I invest all this emotion and cause myself so much stress, when I am clear in the belief that the project will end in failure, disappointment and inevitable recrimination".

Paul67 - for that very reason I saw the game against Spartak Moscow as our CL Final, that was the one we had to win, the real prize for us was being there, as the chances of actually winning the tournament we all know are remote.

Mind you, watching that game was the most uncomfortable 130 minutes I have experienced this year.
Now anything we get from this tournament is a bonus, so last night for me was a walk in the park.

NB - As an after thought - do you think if CQN had been up and running in May 1967, there would have been guys on here on May the 26th slagging Jim Craig for giving away the penalty, analysing the team to death, slating players they've never liked, taxi for wee Bobby etc.

    Celtic_First,

    Yes Hunter is Scottish mate.
Surprise! Surprise! on his journalism "ethics"!

I must admit I had 2 fantastic trips to Barcelona to watch the Hoops in the Uefa Cup and CL and yes you are correct re. the copius amounts of alcohol being swigged down by the fans. I went into a wee supermarket about 400yds down Las Ramblas from the Placa De Catalunya and watched with amusement, the bewilderment of the Catalonians' at the sheer volume of alcohol esp San Miguel, being bought by the Bhoys.
To be honest when it was 9.99Euros for a 24 pack San Miguel its not that surprising really is it???

One female cashier literally shook and scratched her head in disbelief at one guy not only buying, but being able to carry on his own, 2 slabs of San Miguel and 2 litre bottles of Smirnoff!

However with reference to Uncle P and the Mossos, I must admit to being a little surprised at their differing reactions to my presence at the 2 games (Uefa and CL).
For the Uefa Cup game 6 of us got tickets through a UK agency which has offices in Barcelona and were sitting amongst the Barca fans in the upper-middle tier. We were all decked out in Celtic colours as we approached the turnstiles. I noticed the looks we were getting from the Police/Mussos and thought "Oh Oh here we go, could be some trouble here", but far from it, they were polite, friendly even posing with us for some photos, no problem at all. Likewise with the Barca fans themselves, even though we KO'd them that night!

However for the CL game there was a marked difference in their demeanour and actions. Regardless of where your ticket was for, you were herded in with all the rest of the celtic fans into the upper tier where it was obvious from the outset that it was very overcrowded with fans sitting in the aisles and many were 2 or 3 to a seat.
Yet just below us, where only a small retaining wall separated the next level, there were hundreds of empty seats. I saw several Celtic fans climb over the wall only for the Police/Mossos to badly over-react grabbing some by the throat and others being hit on the neck/head with batons to stop them doing so.
They couldn't have cared less about our reputation as TGFITW and were not open or friendly to being asked a question such as "where are the toilets" either sneering in contempt or visibly reaching for the baton at their side.
It hit home to me how little it would take for them to react violently and more than likely indiscriminately to any disorder amongst us.

So to take the point further, I wouldn't like to be an orc in close proximity to any aggro if it breaks out tonight, esp if their reputation has preceded them as you and Uncle P have referred to!!

    TTT

PS - Sorry for the screed, got carried away!

I now sadly have to accept what you say about some booing for Sno. I reckon that you can go anywhere in C.P. on a big match day and there will be someone giving some player dogs abuse. It's so sad.But I also shake my head at the people who leave a match early regardless of the score at the time. How many left C.P. before the end of the extra time against Spartak when it was known that a result had to be arrived at? The no who have a genuine reason, would be no more than 20% in my opinion.

There are players I don't rate as being Celtic quality such as JVOH, Jarosik, Killen and perhaps Caldwell but I would nver boo them because they are wearing MY team's colours.

The highlight of last night for me was the coming of age of Aiden Mc Geady.

As recently as last Saturday I was still wondering whether it was for him a case of all that glitters is not gold. I hoped but was not convinced by his contribution.

Now I have no reservations whatsoever. Only one other player that I have seen in green and white hoops has come close to having that ability to relieve pressure on his own side and cause consternation and unease to the opposition almost in the same phase of play. Last night I was reminded of Jinky. There can be no higher praise in my mind and that mind is made up now. The bhoy is a player and we're lucky to have him.

We're also lucky to have such a wonderful competitor as Scott Mc Donald. He was an example to everyone around him in terms of his effort. Sadly JVOH seems unable to display any sort of similar attitude and I continue to question his value to our team. The once in a while head flick that he wins does not do it for me.

Special word of praise for Jiri who was a victim of Binya's studs in the first half that time on his upper thigh. Unfortunately it was not seen by the assistant referee else he should have been booked then. His experience and calmness in this sort of environment has stood us in good stead and I for one hope he stays.

Finally and it may reflect the tension factor in watching my team but I felt again last night that the crowd was less than intimidating thatn usual. Are we getting blasé?

Are the newpaper reports of a crowd of 52000 correct?

Eamonn at the time liked to parade as a socialist(I believe he is now a socialite) and wrote a dissertation on the struggle he had with his conscience in playing this game.I cannot recall who won the football match but I am happy to report that Eamonn won the battle with his conscience.

It was very entertaining watching the horror expressed by Eamonn`s fellow fellow panalists Mr Souness and Mr Giles at the dreadful tackle on Scott Browne.Eamonn did not think to mention John Fitpatrick or George McCluskey or the Staua Bucharest player whose career could easily have terminated at Ibrox in a European game.

    BoltonBhoy has it correct DBBIA:

    Seguidor means follower
    Hincha means fan.

However, there's no real difference in meaning. You could use the two equally.

Aficionado means the same thing, and it gave us the similar-looking English word.

The word they would use for the mad mental team is, of course, 'ultras'.

Hooligan, now, is an interesting one. For years following Heysel, people in the Spanish media used this word to mean a supporter of any football club from England or Scotland, in a similar way to pretentious journalists here using the word 'tifosi' to refer to Italian fans.

I've noticed some in the Barcelona-Rangers coverage making that mistake. Others, however, have used the word 'hooligan' knowing perfectly what the distinction is.

There seems to be quite a lot of tension building up. The story of initial trouble last night and more expected is right across the Spanish media today.

Andycol is right about Francesc Macia. That is real desecration.

WG could have a point. If they're saying that Catalonia, for them, is Spain (is that what you mean, WG?) because it was a hotbed of anarchy and anti-clericalism in the build-up to the Civil War, it would have a different meaning.

Incidentally, these days, Catalans are expressing radical nationalism, not through anti-clericalism, but through anti-monarchy gestures such as burning effigies of the king and queen. How do you like them apples, Rangers fans?

In any case, the Rangers fans have badly misjudged how their use of language is going down in Catalonia. If they'd wanted to show solidarity, they ought, at the very least, to have written Catalonia as Catalunya. Then they'd maybe have had an argument.

But I don't think that is what they mean. I think they think it's a big laugh. Let's hope it doesn't end in tears.

Fantastic game of football last night. The game had so much for the neutral and the celtic fan. Ebb and flow, near misses, individual excellence, a goal, a horrible tackle and resultant sending off, etc. Our home form is on a par with any in Europe now.

Amongst all the congratulations, there are still a few footballing issues worth considering.

In the 1st half, during that spell when our midfield couldn't get near the ball, the deficiencies of our team were exposed. In particular, the way that Scott Brown and Paul Hartley were being overrun in the middle of the park. For me, the problem lies with our centr backs inability to carry the ball, or even draw the attacker in close enough to commit to the space. Stephen McManus, in particular, is one prone to play the ball forward to a midfielder who is closely marked. He is so uncomfortable under pressure, that he releases the ball early. By doing so he allows our midfield to be outnumbered, with the opposition relying on 2 attackers to keep the 4 defenders under pressure. Compare that with Benfica's backline who were happy to carry the ball beyond our attackers, commiting the first of our midfielders and creating a numerical advantage further up the pitch.

The same applies to Gary Caldwell and Lee Naylor. They commit to the pass, alolowing the opposition attacker to compress the space down the line. In comparison, the Benfica full backs were able to feint to play the pass, and still drag the ball inside.

Until we encourage our existing defenders to back themselves in this way, or we buy new players, we will continue to struggle against teams who can pass and move.

Without an inpired performance from Aiden, we would have been under the cosh the whole game last night.

The Catalan language didn't need the help of the monks at Montserrat, although I'm sure they've always been very gifted in using it.

The Basque language was kept alive by priests, that's for sure.

Catalan was the language of the urban upper-middle classes as well as the peasants. It was never going to suffer the same fate as Basque or Galician. That's why Catalan has such a rich 20th-century literary tradition.

I hope Scott Brown is fine. If I was in charge of his care though, I would be organising an MRI of his knee. The fact that his leg hyperextended combined with his needing to come off would suggest that there might be an issue. A small injury might not produce an immediate swelling, but today might be different. I really hope not, but I don't think his initial "gut feeling" can be relied upon.

    I wouldn't know anything about Souness/McCoist (They're watching y'know!)

Being a conscientious persion myself I concur with your analysis of the Chile match. Disgraceful and no excuse.

I am not an apologist for Eamonn Dunphy however I reserve the right to be entertained on occasion by his ranting style of Punditry.

I didnt find the Brown tackle piece entertaining either. Did I say I did in my earlier post?

Funny enough, I was stress free before the game and exhilarated after it.

It was the best starting XI available so I was content and even during the game Strachan shocked me with timely correct subs.

Its a shame we dont have players playing in position to see what these lads are really capable of.

If we get a right back a left sided midfielder and a striker to accompany SMcD then this team will have real shape.

I leave it to better men than me (Liam Brady,Con Houliha,)to allegedly punch his lights out,

I think Michael D Higgins hit the nail on the head when ,following one of Eamonns rants in the Sunday Indo against him he said
"Dunphy is the type whose presence would clear a pub...the most damning comment that can be made in this juristiction. And when discussing Mr Souness it must be acknowledged that he fairly smashed the resrictive practice policy in operation at Ibrox(and wiped our eye in a stunning manner when doing so it must be admitted)

Uefa will investigate Augustin Binya's horror tackle which forced Celtic midfielder Scott Brown out of Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League win over Benfica.
Binya was shown a straight red card by Swedish referee Martin Hansson for the challenge late on at Celtic Park and faces at least a one-match ban.

Brown accused his opponent of trying to break his leg and urged Uefa to take further action against the midfielder.

A Uefa spokesman said: "We always open a disciplinary case for a red card."

A solitary strike from Aiden McGeady kept alive Celtic's aspirations of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League.

But the evening was soured by Binya's malicious stamp with five minutes remaining.

Brown said: "I'm all right. It was a bad challenge but I've come through it and can you let pggtips know that the MRI scan was ok."

"I don't think the guy should ever have done that. He obviously tried to do me as hard as possible."

Uefa's disciplinary body next meet on Thursday, 15 November and the spokesman added: "There will be at least a one-match ban.

"But all red cards are judged individually so we will need to wait until the meeting to see if there will be a further ban."

A guy is 81 years old and loves to fish. He was sitting in his boat the other day when he heard a squeaky voice say, " Pick me up."

He looked around and couldn't see any one. He thought he was dreaming when he heard the voice say again, " Pick me up."

He looked in the water and there, floating on the top, was a frog.

The man said, "Are you talking to me?"

The frog replied, "Yes, I'm talking to you. Pick me up. Then, kiss me and I'll turn into the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. I'll then give you more sexual pleasure that you ever could have dreamed of."

The man looked at the frog for a short time, reached over, picked it up carefully, and placed it in his front pocket.

Then the frog said, "What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I said? I said kiss me and I will l give you sexual pleasures like you have never had."
He opened his pocket, looked at the frog and said,
"Nah, at my age I'd rather have a talking frog."

Whilst I am not the biggest fan of GS (more his media persona than anything else)he is doing a great job and we should be thankful we have him.
What frustrates is that the ones that shout loudest are the ones the phone ins like and so it goes on and on and the media can continue to peddle the 'fans don't like GS' story.
Anyway a wee glow of satisfaction everytime he shuts up the doubters in the stands and the media must be great for the wee man.

    oldies but goldies (last one)

Men and women on earth die and go to heaven.

    God comes and says :-

"I want the men to form two queues, one line for the men who had control over their women, and the other one for the men who were
controlled by their women. Also, I want all the women to go away so
that no man and woman can talk."

Next time God comes back, the women are gone, and there are two
lines. The line for the men who were controlled by their women is 100 miles long, and in the line of men who had control over their women there is only one man.

God gets mad and says, "You men should be ashamed of yourselves. I
created you in my image, and you were all controlled by your mates.
Look at the only one of my sons who stood up and made me proud. Learn from him!"

"Tell them, my son, how did you manage to be the only one in this
    line?"

The man replies, "I don't know, my wife told me to stand here."

totally agree re Paul Hartley, I was telling everyone who would listen in January how good a signing he was. I was called the "president of the Paul Hartley fan club".

I heard that he was on his way to Ibrox when his agent called saying he was wanted at Parkhead, shortly thereafter Walter Smith called but Paul shut his phone off!:)))

Good to see him playing well and loving life with the Hoops.

That tension you so eloquently talk about is something I have suffered for 50 years and counting, especially when we play our soo side neighbours. I used to just enjoy the European games; maybe because we were so good. Not so now. I find it agonising. I'm sitting here listening to Radio 3 trying to relax and praying that Barca score 7 (and can't bear to listen to it in case they score even 1: sad, I know only too well but there you are).

I know how you feel, the game drained me,my nerves are shattered.

I'm still disillusioned by some so called Celtic Supporters, what joy do they get by booing Celtic.

Firstly I,d like to congratulate Aiden on an outstanding performance, thats what a lot of supporters have been waiting on,maybe we are starting to see the real Aiden on the park, everyone knew he had it in him but that probably was his most outanding game so far,it's like a new player for Celtic this season.

All the players put in a shift last night, and all deserve the plaudits they are getting to-day.

What a difference a goal makes, about 40mins in, the grumbling was starting to get louder, and if Aiden had'nt scored that goal just before the break it would have been hell the 2nd half, from grumblings to smiles in a couple of seconds is a marvalous cure for malaise,Celtic should learn from this and get a goal in the first couple of minutes to cheer up the malcontents in our support, although I think it would have to be a miracle cure to cheer up some of our support.

How's Scott Brown,I thought his leg was broken after that tackle,it was good to see him get up and stay on the park for a couple of minutes, hopefully it's not as bad as I first thought.

Well Paul, that was a good week for the Celts, beating killie, was a result in itsef but to get the result against Benfica was the icing on the cake, and I'm now looking forward to the rest of the season.

Nice to see Brian Quinn getting the ovation he deseved by the support,is this the start of a new agenda or is it going to be much of the same in the boardroom.

You're right. The white hankies come out if the crowd are very unhappy.

But they also come out in appreciation of a moment of great individual skill. It's a bullfighting thing. That's how the crowd let the panel of judges know that the matador deserves to cut off one of the bull's ears as a nice wee souvenir (like the match-ball in football when you score a hat-trick).

    Sometimes he gets both ears.

For an exceptional performance, he can get both ears and the tail.

WG, my amhigo viejo, that's some political gymnastics you've done there with your ‘Huns as supporters of Catalan separatism’ argument and CF you should know better than to humour WG on his odd perspective on Spain. It did make me laugh but then you know WG I think you're one of the funniest guys it has been my unequivocal pleasure to befriend.

I don’t want this to be a debate about the Spanish Civil War mostly because this is a Celtic website and also because I guess few here (myself included) are actually qualified to debate the matter with much authority. However, let's be clear about what Catalonia was more than anything else during and after the Civil War. It was first and foremost a separatist region/nation much much more than one of communism, of anarchism or of anti-clericalism. The anti-clericalism WG refers to was as much a Spanish republicanism phenomenon rather peculiarly Catalan. Catalans are not nor have they been particularly left of centre, and indeed two of the most evident symbols of Catalonia are la Sagrada Familia and the Virgen Negra de Montserrat.

Catalonia by virtue of (amongst other factors) geographical location i.e. NE corner, became the last stand of that very uneasy Republican alliance of leftists, separatists and libertarians and therefore the scene of some of the worst atrocities of the Civil War by both advancing nationalists and retreating Republicans, i.e. retreating from across the entire peninsula.

What they are is Catalan, and therefore not Spanish. It’s a feeling thing as much as you and I might feel not English (or French for that matter) by virtue of our Irish and/or Scottish history, language, ancestry and culture, and that is why so many Celtic supporters feel a solidarity with Barça fans.

Now as for this idea that the Huns were being deliciously ironic not to mention politically astute is just too much for me. And as for solidarity…oh purlease!

This banner if it exists was at the wind up. ‘Catalonia is Spain’ means one thing; it is part of Spain. No right-minded Barça fan would interpret it as anything else.

WG, you attempt to interpret it so because it satisfies your peculiar support for Real Madrid. In this situation it is you that stands side-by-side with your dreaded darnelist foes; strange bedfellows indeed.

Love always, way doon the centro social to celebrate.

Got to say well done to all of the Bhoys. It's superfluous of me to comment further on Mr McGeady, as it has been well covered here and elsewhere, so I'd just like to congratulate the rest of our team, and our manager.

Paul Hartley, Scott Brown, Scott McDonald and Artur Boruc were excellent. Our two (much maligned) full backs stuck to their tasks brilliantly, and our two young international CB's got another 90mins of Champs League experience, and another clean sheet under their belts (not enough to stop the usual suspects to come on here, and start requesting the signing of Sami Hyppia yet-a-bleedin-gain! That would presumably be unsporting behaviour to be analysed at length in the Press.

But perhaps not as he supports Real Madrid , their bitter rivals , although he doesnt actually play for them.

He obviously DOESNT LIKE THEM and so is justified in not shaking their hands.

As our manager said post match we need to stop the quick long ball from the back.Take a couple of passes he said.

    Back to us

I thought we were terrific , especially second half, last night.

Hard to see past Aiden for man of the match but Paul Hartley was just fantastic -- easily his best performance for us IMO. Played like Lenny with a bit more pace , to say the least -- he was everywhere he needed to be in midfield and defence.

I thought WGS might have a wee veiled dig at Riordan in the Herald today when he talked about how hard Aiden had been training in the gym and went on to say how it was funny but the same guys he sees in the gym seem to be the ones in the first team.

Don't forget Artur pulled off a couple of crackin saves at 0 0. First 20 mins Benfica gave Mick and JK the run around.

Having a steady a good goalkepper in this competition is saving Celtic. You'd be staring down the barrel of a gun if it was Douglas and the defence at present.

According to reports in todays papers, the 'Spanish Armada' of huns was 20k strong. BFD on RC said there were 22.5k in the stadium. Where were they?? If there was the official 5k stuck up in the heavens out of view where the away fans are normally seated, that means there were approx 15k sitting in seats around the stadium. I myself spotted 2 orcs behing the lhs goal.
    Anyone else spot any?

    David Beckham 109.

WGS: I saw a couple of cracking saves from Artur - thank goodness he's there. (Oh, and by the way, please don't mention Rab Douglas without prior warning, you gave me a 'Nam style flashback!)

I just can't see the other WGS (if you know what I mean...) going out and buying CB's in January. He strikes me as the type of manager who revels in bringing the young guys on and developing them, and is going to continue to give them every opportunity - even at CL level. There was a lot of talk in the run up to the Benfica game about the average of the team, and how if the team stuck together they could only improve...

Now, I'd be very disappointed if he didn't strengthen at full back, that's an area where we are really struggling to fill the positions.

Lots of talk in Barcelona tonight of anger among the locals that the police and city authorities are turning a blind eye to the behaviour of their visitors this week.

"We would get fined for walking in the cycle lane," one local said. "How can these people get away with this level of incivility?"

There have been concrete complaints about the lack of respect (in the form of urine) for the statue of Francesc Maçià and someone made the point that if Real Madrid fans came to town and did the same thing there would be a full-scale riot.

Also, someone said: "I've just seen a drunken Glasgow Rangers fan relieving himself in the doorway of a church in the Carrer Casanova. Local people could not believe it, but a police car went past and nothing happened.

"Where are these people from? And why do we keep paying for a police force if all it does is language violation citizens?"

Excellent game all around. After the first 20 minutes, I thought our defence was actually quite tight. Both Naylor and Caldwell had good games. JK is improving, regaining his abilities. He and McManus are the natural 1st choice pairing with O'Dea ready on the bench. However, JK and McManus do seem to have a communication problem, which they have to sort out sooner in any given game. This is strange given that they have known each other for some time. Anyone care to comment? Once they get this sorted out I think we will be tight (in the center). Our midfield, at times had problems building and linking. I think SB needs some coaching or fine tuning - he needs to shift out of the full-speed-ahead gear and work on keeping possession. I only mention this recognizing he does have great potential and does an excellent job otherwise. JVoH, missing in action and sorely lacking pace. Donati did really well when he came on. He needs time to settle - telling he mentioned about missing the banter, e.g. language problems etc. Hopefully he adapts and realizes his full potential.

It won't take much tweaking to have a fully purring Team 3 engine. However, would like to see some areas addressed in the January transfer window - we need JJPD back at full strength or a solid RB, LB cover and someone to replace JVoH as the 'marquee' partner for SMcD.

    WG is right.

The postponment of league games after Rangers's most difficult European encounter is a very smelly coincidence.

I just hope it backfires on them and their season goes into free-fall and that we have the title wrapped up before Ash Wednesday.

The main point is that if things are still quite tight in the run-in, we can be fearful of favouritism.

As we have seen in the past, sometimes it works for them (Andy Davis), sometimes it doesn't (erroneously insisting that the only date we could go to Ibrox was immediately after a European semi-final; and allowing Bobby Tait to take a bow at his favourite ground for his final refereeing performance).

However, this is a worrying early marker.

I could see the point of a postponement if it was a Rangers v Celtic match.

After all we would not want a Scottish centre-back being stretchered off after an accidental clash of heads; a Scottish midfielder having to go off having half his teeth kicked out whilst conceding a penalty; a Scottish international striker having his leg broken in the penalty area and no penalty awarded or a Scottish international goalkeeper sustaining a head injury leading to his tragic death.

I've just been reading some of the stuff in the prees about the departure of the Mighty Quinn, he really has been a great guy for Celtic. He also comes across as a true gentlemen with real dignity, yes real dignity! not the cloak and Dagger establishment clap trap variety from Govan way.
When he was booed a couple of years ago, the way the Bunnet was as well sometimes makes me despair of some of our so-called supporters and there are many. Our self proclaimed "best supporters in the world " tag I must be honest has a hollow ring to it. From the treatment of Neil Lennon (Boavista) to the booing of Evander Sno against Hearts, I can honestly say some of us are as fickle and fair weather as the best of them.
After CP was reconstructed, it was apparent that as many as 50% of our home support had no idea what supporting the team is really all about and as a result I think Dermot Desmond was very close to withdrawing his investment in Celtic.
Anyway good luck and a safe and happy retirement to Brian Quinn (Celtic fan..Celtic legend)

It doesn't matter when we play Falkirk... We are getting better as each week goes by, and a season lasts for a whole season.

A few words from our departing Chairman:

"Outgoing chairman Brian Quinn says he is leaving Celtic in safe hands after hailing manager Gordon Strachan as one of the world's top coaches.

"It's very important Gordon remains," said Quinn.

"Gordon's style irritates some people - he's a wee bit idiosyncratic - but there is no better coach in football.

"He leaves the financial side to Peter Lawwell. It's a great division of responsibilities. The best two signings I've ever made? I'd say so."

On the rearranging of this week's fixtures: logic would suggest that the St Mirren - Rangers game be played on 4/ 5 December or 18/ 19 December as neither side has a midweek fixture. Interesting that no decision has been made as yet.

But I'm sure they won't want to leave it until after the 2 January meeting at Celtic Park. We are currently three points clear and if we have played an extra game could be going into the match at least 6 points ahead.
