Stuart Dougal dysfunctional referee after attack on Lord McLean

“When you start having lawyers and lords against a humble referee, we can’t compete”.

So said referee Stuart Dougal after Gordon Strachan successfully had his touchline ban overturned on Friday.

Dougal went on, "In simple terms, there was sufficient doubt put into the minds of Lord McLean and his colleagues on the appeals board by Celtic's solicitor, who in my mind did a good job.

“I am not lawyer. But, if you can manage to work the situation the way he worked it, he did very well."

I read and re-read how this story was reported, astonished that the old media seemed to ignore that a Grade One referee questioned whether Lord McLean, one of Scotland’s senior judges, has the capacity to adjudicate on football matters; an outrageous slur on Lord McLean and the integrity of the SPL.

Anyone charged with the responsibility of imposing the laws of the game must respect those laws.

Dougal’s objection to a lawyer being present at proceedings before a High Court judge is preposterous, indeed, professional representation has been used in the past against Celtic in an altogether more sinister way.

In 1999 a consultant psychologist, in evidence, described the conduct of Stephane Mahe as “a blatant example of dysfunctional aggression”, before a SPL commission of inquiry. Mahe, who led a law-abiding, ‘functional’, life was stigmatised by this evidence and branded a “nutter” by the tabloid press.

One wonders what a psychologist would make of Dougal’s blatant attack on Lord McLean’s ability to adjudicate, or whether a match official, who appears to have lost faith in the integrity of law lords and the SPL, has become a dysfunctional referee.

It sounds like it to me.

I read Dougal's wee rant on Saturday and wondered where he was going with this. As you say he is questioning a Law Lord's ability to judge on a football matter but also implying it's better when there's no legal representation at these meetings so fairness and integrity can be abandoned.

Dougal seems to have a real agenda against Gordon. Does anyone know what Gordon was charged with in the first place?

What was the offence Mr Strachan was sent off for?
What were the grounds that Lord MacLean alloed the appeal to stand?

Stuart Dougal should be taken to task for questioning the decision. That is effectively what he has done. To suggest Lord Maclean has been duped (and I can advise that he has too much savvy to fall into that category of judge) by Celtic's legal team is more of an affront to his Lordship's character and abilities than to say that he simply got the decision wrong. Will the SFA penalise Dougal ? For sure, managers and coaches are penalised for criticising referees. Surely the same must be true vis-a-vis referee and Senator of the College of Justice.

PS His Lordship is a Hearts man.

When will GS case come up for when he got sent off at Pittodrie ?

I would have thought that Dougals outburst was a case of bringing the game into disrepute along with questioning the right for anyone to employ a lawyer as an intermediary especially considering it was an appeal.

Will this taint WGS chances for the Pittodrie incident ?

For Dougal to cast suspicion on Lord Mc Lean the panel and the appeal process is a classic case of someone unable to accept the decision of a tribunial. It´s easy to have a cheap shot at the process , the people involved and cronyism. This alone is a very illustrative thumbnail sketch of Stuart Dougal´s character OR proves without any shadow of a doubt that it´s personal between himself and WGS.

    Hail Hail

Any discussion in the Sundays regarding these statements ?

A simple check of the games that Mr Dougall has been in charge of, involving either Celtic or Rangers probably tells you all a lot about the guy.

His stats in such games makes interesting reading. I am not solely talking of games between the sides either.

Interesting, in a week where everyone's favourite human rights lawyer Amer Anwar incurred the wrath of the judiciary for disagreeing with, Lord Carloway, I think.

The reason in broad AA's comments were subject to criticism-and in his case-possible censure by way of contempt of court is that as well as representing his client he also owes some duties as an officer of the court. Whether you agree with him or not in that particular case the accusation being levelled against him is that the complaints he made could have been addressed within the system and he misrepresented what had actually taken place.

SD is in an interesting and without stretching the analogy too much comparable position. He has criticised the system which he is a part of, and to some degree, owes some responsibility. The tribunal is the independent arbiter of the rights and wrongs of this situation. Is SD to be allowed to criticise the tribunal with impunity. If he disagrees with it's decision to what extent ought he be allowed to criticise it?

As it is his criticisms are ill thought out and lacking in any internal logic. The inference is that the referee ought to be the last voice on what ACTUALLY happened. Which is perhaps a bit like saying the police ought always to be believed even if contradictory evidence can be offered.

There is a thinly veiled suggestion that Celtic's lawyer has somehow 'pulled a fast one' in persuading the tribunal that the referee's version was wrong. In my experience most lawyers represent what their client's position is-which is only logical since in most circumstances they haven't directly witnessed the events themselves. That's why lawyers are often called agents.

In other words the tribunal has been persuaded that GS'(and any other persons' present) version of events is to be preferred to that of SD.

Which leads to an obvious couple of questions. If SD's version has not been accepted should he be subject to any sanction or should he be subject to any sanction for his criticism of the decision? How well placed can he be in future similar situations to reach the correct decision with regard to CFC and GS?

If SD considers that his own employers have failed him here or that the independent tribunal to which these decisions are subject to review is unfair/wrong/inappropriate perhaps he should consider his own position?

An interesting point. I am not convinced that SD has any particular ongoing bias against Celtic. in fact I'm sure I read that in his first dozen or so Celtic-Rangers games Rangers didn't have a victory.

I'm inclined to think that he is not too fond of either Celtic or Rangers.

His problem I think as he has demonstrated in this case and previous cases is that he does not like to have his authority challenged. Over officious some might call it kindly. Others might call it egotism or even downright arrogance. Given the latest stuff in the paper from him I'm increasingly thinking the third of these three options. His authority has been challenged by the final arbiter of these decisions and he just doesn't like it.

imo, unless Stuart Doogal can prove that he had just cause to send Gordon to the stand, then he should be charged with wasting everybody's time on this matter.

In the same way that if I went to the police and made false allegations about SD for example, they would charge me with wasting police time.

benny - I don't see why Dougal is entitled to any legal representation anyway, after all, he wasn't the one on trial (for want of a better word to describe the process), WGS was!

The next time any player or manager is taken to task about speaking out about a refereeing decision, surely they can cite Dougal's outburst on Lord MacLean?

  • At 12/11/07 13:44, h.bosch said…

The Battered Bunnet. I suppose the question is whether the decision was overturned because SD was disbelieved as to what factually happened or whether his interpretation of the laws of the game was wrong based upon an agreed or accepted set of facts . Either way he doesn't exactly come out of it smelling of roses.

Its-I'm not convinced that should be the case. The bigger concern I believe relates to his criticism of the decision after the fact. I suppose much depends on which of the two ways suggested above it was reversed.

    Comment deleted, language violation.

I agree with Peter on the matter of legal representation for each side, only Gordon Strachan had a case to answer and would therefore need representation.

The dice are heavily loaded in favour of the referee in these matters.

If the ref said he heard or saw something which contravened the rules, the appeal would be dismissed. His testimony is preferred to that of the footballer/manager.

In this instance, clearly, the referee was unable to convince the panel that this was the case.

All a wee bit touchy Paul. I don't draw the same conclusions as you.

Dougal simply seems to be repeating the old adage that the person who represents himself has a fool for a client.

Anyone who has ever been in a formal procedure where the law is debated, and has represented themselves, will have a similar sentiment. This could be a planning application, an employment tribunal, or an arbitration hearing, never mind a court.

Judgements are not made on the strength of one's convictions or qualifications, but on the relative strengths of the legal arguements put forward by each party.

The winner is always the party who makes the best arguement in law.

Clearly a lawyer, professionally trained to do just that, will most often present a more compelling argument than the most well intentioned non legal.

Dougal has got a point in this, insofar as if Celtic were permitted to be represented by a lawyer, to present an arguement on the law (of football) then the SFA really ought to provide similar support to the refs. I suggest that if the refs continue to require to represent themselves, pretty much every case argued will come down on the side of the appellant.

Fair enough that this time Gord has been the beneficiary, but just you wait for the first case on the antisocial behaviour rules to be appealed, and see what we get when poor old Lex Gold is left arguing the case against a more (legally) qualified opponent.

Anyway, enough of this p/$#. What's the football chat?

I'm not anti SD here, just for the life of me cant understand why he would rather bleat to the media about a big bad lawyer seeing him off than explain why he made the decision in the first place.

109steps Fair enough in itself but referees and the SFA hide behind archaic rules preventing criticism, debate and explanation. Enough players and managers have fallen foul of these rules to make the standard clear. I agree with you that football should be able to have open debate on decisions but until that way is cleared Dougall should accept the verdict. Expression of disappointment is one thing but this went beyond that and he does have a duty as an SFA appointee to live with the system he is part of.

Flip4Mac allows you to play wmv files on Quicktime but it can’t deal with the DRM encoding.
This is an industry-wide issue caused because the accepted Digital Rights Management (DRM) system used to protect online video content, which is required by content owners, is not compatible with Apple Mac operating system. The closed DRM system used by Apple is not currently available for licence by third parties and there is no other Mac-compatible DRM solution which meets the protection requirements of content owners. Unfortunately, we are therefore unable to offer Channel67 content to Mac users at this stage.

The files you can play will be the ones that don’t have the drm on them, mainly the older matches and some interviews that are available to all.

Re Dougal, the SFA took the action against GS, on the merits of Dougal and his team(witness or witnesses, a witness does not need legal representation an accused does.

In either respect Dougal should not be talking to the press or anybody about this.

Well done to Celtic and Gordon Strachan for appealing what appears to be a trumped up charge in the first place.

    PJB,

your spot on but the problem is that this "pride" is protected to the extent that appeals , lawyers, judges, football managers, football clubs etc. are all heavily involved.

The fact that it had to go to appeal without any verbal admonishment whatsoever for WGS and for Dougal to then make these bitter statements to the press seems ridiculous to me.

It proves it´s personal between himself and GS and that the man that dishes out the law can´t abide by it himself.

He should be brought to book and be given a clout round the ear. His ego is out of control...needless to say he will be given the Near day game

    Irrational. Emotional...And ultimately Personal.
Bless him....Feel sorry and embarrassed for him even...

My favourite way to deal with red faced road/ref rage bluster is to smile and wave.... It works a treat...
It stops my blood pressure rising and increases that of the raging one.

It is also appropriate given Lord McLeans findings.
No doubt Dougal himself is under pressure now.

    Embarrassing?

I managed to get a ticket for the Scotland v Italy game and I am really looking forward to it and hope that we qualify however when I read stuff like this from Chic Young it just makes me squeamish about being associated with them. Sorry bit it has to be said

"It is more than a football match now. It's Clark Kent versus Lex Luther, Popeye against Bluto. It's good over evil.

Italy have scarred the face of the beautiful game.

They have polluted it with match-fixing and corruption, riddled it with the cancer of crowd violence and even, it would seem, used verbal abuse in the World Cup final to rid their opponents of their most dangerous player.

Scotland's task is straightforward; beat the world champions
Theirs is currently the dodgy neighbourhood of the sport."

I was at the semi final in Dortmund last year where Germany lost to Italy ... believe me when I say that they will not be intimidated by the atmosphere one little bit.

We need to do what we have always being doing and that is take the one or two chances that come our way

From somebody that used to work beside him I was told that you would never know which team Dougal supported but what they did say that he was the most arrogant man he has ever met. So for him to use the term humble is a fallacy.

Also Gordon never got off on a technicallity. The facts were presented and a decision was made. In his professional position Dougal would know the basics of the law and the first thing that would have to be achieved was what actually happened.

It is no surprise but disappointing that the laptops chose to take Dougals view that a conniving solicitor got a guilty man off.

Then again they give air time to the clown at the RST sho wants to redefine the term sectarian to his own preferred definition.

As your figures come from the census the I'll accept them with no argument however it still works out that the Catholic population of Scotland is around the 17% level and even as the percentage grows it's still going to be a long way from the sort of majority needed to have a Catholic Scotland.

Sways are things that are a great loss to the game.

Next memory - McGrain, ur ye there?

Several inductees to the Scottish Football Hall of Fame were presented to the media today as the official presentations took place.

Brian Laudrup turned up to accept the awards on behalf of Ally and Wally, and admitted he had partly made the effort as he was hoping both would be there. Both were on holiday and did not attend. Poor show from Gordon Smith.

    Gordon Strachan was there.

Former Rangers and Scotland full-back Eric Caldow was also inducted but displayed a somewhat over-inflated conceit of himself:

'Speed was all I had. The winger pushed the ball past me to run on and nobody ever got it - Jimmy Johnstone, Tommy Ring, Gento of Real Madrid.'

    Jinky got it.

Collie :- Once again I'll point out a basic mistake. You once again compare two branches of Christianity for numbers, I made it clear in my post I was comparing as a percentage of the Scottish population. My next point is that you once again imply I am a member of a Protestant denomination as I pointed out in my previous post to you I am an atheist. This means I can't possibly be a member of any church or have a preference for any particular denomination so once again your statement that my side is somehow on the decline is wrong.

    What do I know?

Sometimes I read this blog and wonder why I don't share the views of the majority.

Regarding the Dougal incident I find it a bit sad that legal teams have to be consulted on such unimportant matters.

MON, Petrov and all ex celts I wish them well. I bear them no ill will and want them to enjoy footballing success.

Hugh Dallas, in my opinion, the best Scottish referee I've seen. And one of the best around in the world according to UEFA/FIFA. Unfortunately, on these pages we read of his monsterous deeds.

Davie Provan, Charlie Nicholas Andy Walker all frequently insulted on these pages. My view, great Celts all of them who are worth listening to.

    MO Johnstone
Every comment I read regarding MJ is abussive. Principally because of the tendency to refer to him as "Le Petit Merde". Maybe this is all good fun, well I don't get it.
It's a pity some posters cant be a little more forgiving of a guy who committed the "crime" of signing for his rivals.
Well, I enjoyed the documentary about his life in the US from a few years ago and hope he has a successful managerial career.

Lastly, and I would like to see them finish last, calling Rangers the huns. I find it pathetic and offensive.
But hey! what do I know?

I remember Eric Caldow well. He was an excellent player but I'm afraid his memory is playing him tricks. Eric's last real season for Rangers was 64-65 before Jock Stein returned to Celtic and when Jimmy was only 20/21. The mature Jimmy would had even better full backs than Eric Caldow for breakfast when he was in the mood. I was friendly with a relative of Eric Caldows and according to him his final relations with Rangers were a bit strained after he was denied complementary entry to Ibrox. Jock Stein arranged for him to go to watch the European champions though.

When I saw the highights later that night on my pal's colour tv- wow, amazing what a bit of colour does for your life.
Bobby Moore was never the same player again after being robbed by Lubanski for the second goal.

one of my earlier footballing memories is when rangers played moscow dynamo at ibrox
They had a white stripe running round the bottom of their shorts.
As we wore short troosers at that time (grey in colour) if you turn them up from the knees the lining was white so instant moscow shorts.
Also at that time studs were nailed into the leather soles of the footy boots so when you came off the park the soles of the sock were red with blood and 18 wee pucture wounds in the bottom of your foot.
If you were poor like me your shin guards were a copy of the radio times from the week before
all this and celtic never signed me

    re Eric Caldow.

He played at least twice against Jinky.

In the 1964/65 League Cup final, which Rangers won 2-1, Jimmy scored.

The records of the time suggest that as we swapped our wingers, Hughes and Johnstone, Rangers
    swapped their full backs.

In the next Celtic v Rangers game, at Ibrox on New Year's Day 1965, Rangers won 1-0.

Again Jimmy and Eric Caldow lined up against each other.

Unfortunately, Jimmy got ordered off, justifiably it must be said, when he took a run at Beck and belted him.

Mr Wharton had no option but send Jinky off.

That game saw Bobby Murdoch miss a late penalty too.

Eric Caldow actually broke his leg at Wembley in April 1963 when Scotland beat England 2-1, both scored by Baxter.

Bobby Smith of Spurs was the culprit with a particularly nasty challenge early in the game.

The leg was broken in 3 places.

Scotland in those days of course would have played on with only 10 men.

The previous year, 1962, Eric Caldow scored from the penalty spot at Hampden when Scotalnd again beat England, this time 2-0.

Revenge indeed for a 9-3 drubbing in 1961.

They played with an orange ball that day and the reason given for that massacre was that Frank Haffey wouldn't touch it and the full backs, Shearer and Caldow, wouldn't kick it :)

Edward, I believe Mr Caldow hails from Cumnock.

I remember watching Celtic play Queen of the South in a friendly in the sixties as a wee boy at Palmerston. Stevie Chalmers ran into the hoardings we were standing against and I vividly remember the adidas boots he was wearing. I bugged mum and dad for ages about them but had to wait until I was thirteen to get them. They were the ones with the nylon studs that 'sharpened' to jagged edges if you went on the road or pavement with them and they were LETHAL.

Didn't make me play any better mind.

    British Footballs New "Rich List"-

    .

Half of the top ten in FourFourTwo's latest Football Rich List are newcomers to football and reinforce the attraction of the English Premiership to multi-millionaire businessmen.

And eight of them qualify as BILLIONAIRES.

Only FOURTEEN players make the Top 100 despite the recent controversy sparked by a Government Minister's remarks about wages being 'obscene."

Two new players on the list are Chelsea's Didier Drogba, 29, who is Number 96 with a £14m fortune and Manchester United's Ronaldo, 22, who props up the list at Number 100 with a bank balance of £12.25m

Editor, Hugh Sleight, says: "Of 25 new entries this year -five in the Top Ten - only two are players, who now number just 14. So while their wages rise, their bank balances pale into insignificance compared to the men who pay them."

Chelsea's owner Roman Abramovich, 41, is still way out in front with an estimated value of £10.8b and a £150m divorce settlement hardly made a dent in his fortune.

The newcomers are headed by another Russian, Alisher Usmanov, 54, whose personal fortune is said to be £2.76b and F1 Racing supremo Bernie Ecclestone, 77, said to be worth £2.5b and who took over struggling QPR with Renault team boss Flavio Briatore.

The other new entries are Mike Ashley, 42 at Newcastle United, Stanley Kroenke, 59 at Arsenal and Tory grandee Lord Ashcroft, 61 who bought 42% of Watford.

    The new TOP TEN is:

    1) Roman Abramovich, Chelsea - £10.8b
    2) Joe Lewis , Tottenham Hotspur - £2.8b
    3) Alisher Usmanov, Arsenal - £2.76b
    4) Bernie Ecclestone, QPR - £2.5b
    5) Mike Ashley, Newcastle United - £1.6b
    6) Dermot Desmond, Celtic - £1.6b
    7) Malcolm Glazer, Man Utd - £1.25b
    8) Stanley Kroenke, Arsenal - £1.2b
    9) Trevor Hemmings, Preston N.E. - £980m
    10) Lord Ashcroft, Watford - £950m

Then 1 of them owned up to having 3 people backing up his story he ran that Beckenham was coming to Celtic.. He gave it away when he said he would be happy to see Brian leaving. The 3 people who said it was a true story were Gordon, Peter and Brian. It seems our management team have a sense of humour....In saying that in the guys defence he took it in good spirits.

Mr Angry & Noel90 :- Without taking any sides in your debate over him I was at what I seem to remember was his last game for Celtic, it was at Ibrox and you turned us over 2 - 4 after we had a two goal lead (I think at half time). He scored two in that game and all I seem to remember is leaving the ground feeling miserable after singing "where's your Charlie gone" until he scored. So despite my saying at the start I was neutral I'll have to come down on Noels side, and wish him bad karma :-)

Whilst Mr Dallas was reckoned to be one of our top refs, well, I'm the tallest person in my house, must be all the doggie poo I stand in.

While we're on the subject of Mr Dougal, I still think he has to go a bit before reaching the depths of Brines and Richmond.

As well as direct entry for the Scottish Cham, pions, the changes to the Champions' League also mean that 22 teams qualify as of right. That leaves only 10 places for teh rest to scramble for, which will include 4th placed teams in the likes of Spain, Italy and England.

So very difficult for whoever finishes second in Scotland to qualify.

BTW, what's this about Walter Smith in the Scotland Hall of Fame? Shouldn't he be black balled for walking out in the middle of a qualifying tournament? couldn't even be bother to attend the ceremony either...

I think we won around 5-2 or 5-3 & my recollection is that it snowed the full day from leaving home in the morning to getting home at night. It was the first time I became aware of the brilliance of one Daniel Fergus McGrain.

Evening all. A rare quiet night here in deepest, darkest D & G, SO I'm able to post for a change. I'm on a bit of a scrounge actually. My good friend Zbyszek, along with his brother-in-law and his B-I-L's uncle, would like to come over from Poland to go to the n'erday game and he is looking for three tickets, preferably all sitting together, but not essentially. I know it's a big ask, but as he gave me a roof over my head when I visited him in September, I would like to try to help him out any way I can. and also, if you don't ask, you wont get.

If anyone would like to give up their ticket, or knows how I can get a hold of three briefs, can you please e-mail me. My details are available by clicking on my blog name.

And another thing, I'm going to the Milan game in December, so if you fancy meeting up for a wee glass of chianti, or six !! just drop me a line.

I must say, regardless of the money or the TV exposure, or the constant big games...I would rather Celtic played in Scotland, than in a European League.

Taking the club out of Scotland will take the club away from ourselves, the fans. It will turn into the stage where away fans become a thing of the past, after all, who can afford to fly out to Europe and then the World every fortnight?

Nay, I would rather scream in joy at a last minute winner on a cold Wednesday night Scottish Cup replay at Tynecastle, than be pushed away from the club I love so that we can make a few more Euros.

I know it happens in Spain, but can you see the other teams in the SPL wanting our reserves there? It would be their chance to win the title, and our fans would not shell out for two campaigns a year.

From what my son was told by another Grade 1 referee (a Hearts fan) Dougal witnessed Gordon Strachan approach and whisper in the ear of Neil McCann as he was waiting on the touchline to come on as a substitute for Hearts.

Dougal sent Strachan to the stand.

Strachan was thereby due to receive an automatic 4-match ban. At the disciplinary hearing which would rubber-stamp the ban, Dougal was asked if he could tell the committee exactly what Strachan had said to the Hearts player. Dougal's response was that he did not hear what was said, but that he considered it to be said in an aggressive manner.

The expected 4-match ban was suddenly and inexplicably reduced to a 2-match ban, which prompted Celtic to appeal on the basis that such a reduction was an admission by the committee that the case against Strachan was tenuous, to say the least.

At the appeal hearing, Celtic's legal representative was asked exactly what Strachan had said to Neil McCann. The lawyer duly obliged. Dougal was once again asked if he knew what Strachan had said to McCann and again, he replied that he did not, but that he considered it to have been said in an aggressive manner. The appeals committee looked at video footage of the incident and decided to uphold the appeal.

Why Dougal should object to Celtic FC being legally represented, and why he should now see fit to question the credentials of a prominent law lord is beyond me, but he has been left exposed and looking very foolish indeed.

I suspect his refereeing career will now hit the skids.

    Good riddance I say.

I forgot to add this bit

A couple of important points here: If the sales of T-shirts doesn't go as well as we hope, then the banner will not be made and the "profits" from the sales of t-shirts will instead be donated to Walfrid Wells charity. If there are screw ups with T-shirt orders, we will do our level best to fix the problem, but understand that we are not a business, we all have our own full-time jobs and are only human. Absolutely no money taken from members for these t-shirts will either go to CM.com or any of the people who run it, nor will Badgeman profit from this. All monies raised will either go towards the banner or to charity should the scheme fail to raise enough interest.

Now im too far from my 'council house' copyright Kano to go back to it or maybe not...

Pablophanque Kites @1.42 Dear god, what memories this song conjures up! Previous home, previous hearth. T.O.T.Pops .Previous people.....mum, dad, brother and sisters. The beauty of this ,for me, is that nobody knows about it,except for a select few who knew it and loved it and have become reacquainted with it ,thanks to yourself. It just reminds me of the unbelievable quality of popular music in the sixties. This is obscure ,but magnificent. Pablo ,you`re a wee stoater!.

    Tully57 - Ooh the trouble I’m in!

Yes I do remember the Butcher Header night. I am correct in saying we were with our Raith Rovers friend? And I remember the shirt swapping well. Was there not a lost leather jaicket to boot? Perhaps that was a night with the Budabhoy.

We went to a nightclub (well illicit speakeasy is more the phrase) called The Attik which was run by my old friends Kevin and Brian. Brian was a 30 stone Celtic supporting bouncer and Kevin a bow tie wearing mincing club steward type of geezer. Both great men who must’ve barred and unbarred me a dozen times from the The Attik.

Well in thinking about your post last night, Tully, I was called upon to enquire of Mrs McGrain the name of the said establishment. Swift as you like, she replied, ‘The Attik and I remember that night too – you snogged a woman’.

Now admittedly this was pre-nuptial McGrain, but I am damned sure there was no shenanigans of that nature that night. Can you confirm, for the sake of my marriage and sanity that this is so?

Thanks Pablophanque for the HarperValleyPTA choon..love those feisty cowgirls.

Thanks DBBIA for the beginner´s guide to loading onto the blog, I must give it a try sometime.
By the way you may need to add Racing Santander to your "Other Hoops" spot. They played in them as an away strip against Deportivo de La Coruña at the weekend and won 1-0!! There are a couple of other Northern Spanish teams who don them hoops occasionally. I also spotted two amateur teams wearing them at the weekend. It's da fashion, Galtieri will be next.

As for Stuart " Get me Dowdalls " Dougal, Send him to Guantanamo, or Karachi to see what it's like not having a lawyer. Keep fighting your corner Celtic.

The Italy situation is very disturbing. It has been reported that Roma and Lazio fans joined together to fight the police in the city of Rome. I find that very sinister. Can the forces of law and order be so despised by all sets of fans. Can we imagine the Celtic and Rangers supporters in solidarity ganging up on the constabulary? A lot of water has passed under the bridge since it allegedly happened many moons ago. Where is Mr Berlusconi now? He has made his high profile out of football, he needs to be among the people who supports measures to humanise the sport in Italy.

As for this game on Saturday, we are in danger of turning into England with all this jingoism in the air. If, and it's a huge if, we qualify, expect Big Eck Carpet adverts from Tillycoutry and new suits from the best Italian tailors for Duffield.

The only other reference to our bhoys I came across at the weekend was a small piece in the business pages which had a headline which shook me back a bit, was this the high powered business mogul takeover that Paul has been bracing us for and warning against?

"Severstal increase their offer for Celtic"

It turns out that it's about a Russian Steel manufacturer who are looking to purchase Celtic( Resources), a Dublin based company which produces molybdenum from their mining operation.

Does this company call itself Celtic? Is it pronounced with a soft C? Are the mineshafters letting on all they know?

  • At 13/11/07 11:33, dontbrattbackinanger said…

Molydenum is mainly used in high strength alloys, eg armour plating on tanks.

The original'Kites' was by Simon Dupree and the Big Sound; it was a top 10 hit in 1967. A young man called Reg Dwight joined them on keyboards, but SD and the BS turned down the chance to record the songs he'd written. And they weren't impressed at his decision to change his name to Elton John..

I think El Gordo whispered'sack Duffield to wee Neil; but SDougal, as is often the way with whispers, thought he'd said' Feck Dougal'.

    As if he would..

Anyways, today's Saint may have yielded to temptation no doubt due to Cafflick schools
