Four point lead of offer against St Mirren

I know the opportunity to watch Celtic spank St Mirren at home is not the kind of thing that will fill every seat at Celtic Park, but the prospect of moving four points clear at the top of the league is more than enough motivation for me.

Our thoughts have been dominated in recent weeks by the outstanding drama served up in the Champions League, but with five home league fixtures coming up within the next four weeks, Celtic have an opportunity to put some distance between themselves and the chasing pack, before European football comes into view again.

The next four weeks will be crucial in deciding the destination of the league. If Celtic rediscover their confidence, which appeared to be replaced by fear in Milan, they should finish this period with a sustainable lead in the league. This starts with taking care of a St Mirren team who look less convincing with each passing week.

Fear is not unusual when faced with Continental opposition, perhaps some Churchillian words, abridged by one of our correspondents, would help see Celtic through the challenge ahead:

“We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air,
we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be.

We shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
we shall fight in the hills;
we shall NEVER surrender,
but we WILL NOT PLAY GRETNA!

Some challenges are simply too frightening to contemplate.

I was looking on Wikipedia at their Greg Hemphill entry and was amazed to see this:

Hemphill is known to be a supporter of Celtic F.C.[4]

Now, you click on the wee number four to find out from which authoritative source Wikipedia got their information and are taken to a list on CQN posted by Pablo in April 2006.

    Paul,

I love football. There are many reasons why; The passion, the tension, the opinions, the camaraderie, the one up man ship.

But most of all, yeah most of all, I like the way it provides people with the opportunity to make fools of themselves.

Glasgow Rangers and the SFA are exceptional at this. From David Murrays assertion he would spend £10 for every £5 we spent to Jim Farry's pitiful attempt to keep Jorge Cadette away from the Celtic team, we have seen and heard and laughed at it all.

And now the end is near, Glasgow Rangers already look ridiculous, but not nearly as ridiculous as when their title hopes evaporate against Gretna in January.

Rangers will not win this match. We have all seen how life, and its most important sibling, football, loves to make a mockery of those who think they know best.

I suggest you put some money on it and use the proceeds to ensure you get to see Celtic progress to the Quarter Finals of the Champions League.

    I will see you there.

Zurawski scored only goal. One goal against nine scored by Smolarek is not a good achievement. His position in our NT is not a typical striker. Zurawski had a few assists and he was always to calm the play.
I don't know what the club is going to with Maciej Zurawski but from my perspective of today for 99percent he is in Galaxy.

I remember my dad telling me that, I think, in 1967 when Celtic won every competition they entered, RFC made an excuse not to play them in the Glasgow Cup Final. All around the city where FTP had been daubed on walls, the legend 'Feart Tae Play' was added! Sums up the Gretna scenario in my mind.
St Mirren can be stodgy and wee Gus has them fired up to compete early so we'll have to be on the ball from the first. Confident though.

  • At 07/12/07 13:46, dontbrattbackinanger said…

Zybszek, again thanks. My worry if he goes is our lack of cover for our main goalscorer, SMcdonald. And I'm also not convinced JVH is playing well enough to be an automatic choice. Is MZ setting up the chances for Smolarek?

Smcdonald is a good player, but not exceptional, which means at some stage he'll either get injured, or the goals will dry up.

    dontbrattbackinanger:

And that was in 13 games. Even Andy Selva of San Marino scored the same amount in 10 games.

I can't help but ponder the January transfer window already. For me, we have to offload Balde, Gravesen, Quinn, Riordan and Zurawski. All five are nowhere near a game for the Celtic first team, and in the case of Quinn, never were.

As for St. Mirren, well, I think it is important we maul this team. At the beginning of the season we scored 4 against Falkirk, and 5 against Hearts, St. Mirren and ICT. Since then, 3 has been our highest return.

For a reminder to the SPL, and as a statement of intent, we should rack up as many as is humanly possible, especially considering our CL exertions are over for a few months. 5-0 or 6-0 AT LEAST.

I don't expect this every week, but against a team just as bad as Gretna, and at home, where due to a shortage of defenders we should really just use this as an excuse to field more strikers...nothing but a rampant victory will do on this one occasion.

    My team for Saturday:

    M. Brown
    Caldwell
    Pressley
    McManus
    Hartley
    Jarosik
    Brown
    McGeady
    Killen
    JVOH
    McDonald

Subs: McGovern, O'Dea, Sno, Donati, Bjarnasson, Riordan, McGowan

Another wee footnote. He's probably mentioned it on CQN before, but my good mucker BAZ_67 had a quite CHAMPION encounter with Greg Hemphill at the Boavista game in Portugal. He was sitting right next to Greg and Paul Riley who plays Winston.

At the end of the total, there was obvious total euphoria. "Winston" was actually in tears and BAZ_67 was hugging them both.

    BAZ says to "Victor":

"How good is this, Victor......I wonder what Jack'll be saying about it......."

Victor is creasing himself laughing and replies:

"Jack'll be seek. He'll be greeting himsel tae sleep in his wee hun hoose"

    Ah.......the memories.

Lardo66 - The Glory and The Dream has a bit on the Rangers incident you're mentioning - in was 1969, they were in with a shout in the league, still in the Scottish cup, in the semi of the Fairs cup and obviosly the Glasgow cup, their form had been slipping, although they were still winning, we were out of Europe and playing good stuff so we pressed for a date for the Glasgow cup game. They were scared of a good beating and withdrew from the competition citing a "congestion of fixtures". Backfired completely, lost the league, bumped out of Europe by Newcastle, horsed in the cup final byus 4-0. Here's hoping for a repeat of that.

I cannot tell you how many assists Zurawski did for the others. Simply I don't know that. I can tell you that Leo Beenhakker doesn't doubt Zurawski's fitness for the national team. I many games Maciej played most of the time and if I'm not mistaken never had started from the bench.
As you know he was a great scorer in Poland and had a good season for Celtic. I don't belive he forgot how to score the goals.

Still we can't have exciting champions league football all the time so it's on with the SPL fixtures unlike of course our rivals who appear 2 feartie 2 take on the mighty Gretna. The way I look at it, it's a chance 2 get some points on board and stretch our lead at the top. Having being down in the dumps after dropping points at Tynecastle then somewhat underwhelmed on losing in Milan but going thro' 2 next stage of CL, I genuinely am looking 4ward 2 the game 2moro, even if, as I suspect, I will b freezing my b**s off.

Gordon, so when do you think the pic was taken- presumably very early on in his time at Celtic, as none of the 'majors' are on show?

And given the recent shameful BJK campaign, I hope we're in no hurry to return their trophy!

Generally speaking, everything Charlie Nicholas says regarding Celtic is at best to be taken with a pinch of salt, or worst discarded at a moment's notice.

In this example (i.e. suggesting Senderos), he actually comes up with a player who would probably be a decent enough player for Celtic.

As I've said many times before, Premiership players costing anything like their true value are not worth the money they are quoted. Senderos would definitely improve the Celtic defence but he simply isn't worth the money as there are surely players from other countries of similar or better ability who would be worth a fraction of the price.

Just doing the usual scouting through google out of boredom, came across this. Playing for both Celtic and Rangers is one thing, but in these circumstances, well, you couldn't script it.

'On August 16th, 1906, Rangers played Celtic in a benefit match for Finlay Speedie. During the game, Celtic keeper, David Adams cut his hand on a nail, inadvertently left in a goalpost following a 5-a-side game. Rangers immediately offered Celtic a loan of their reserve keeper, Tom Sinclair until Adams was fit again. Sinclair didn’t lose a goal in Celtic’s first six league games. He even won a Glasgow Cup medal when Celtic took that trophy. Later on, he was transferred to Newcastle where he won a league championship medal – all in the same season!'

given the money they had for transfers a comparison on what MON and GS spent would be interesting reading?

My recollection is martin spent big then these players lasted for years meaning average spend is not that high tho initial spend was

    pgtips

if these players are out there we need the much vaunted scouting system and database to start producing them? so far the CBs have been pressley, virgo,du wei and caldwell with occasionally roy keane?

    antsman

that`s an interesting point re initial spend against the service of the player

eg Zurawski cost £2M has done next to damn all since his first season
    whereas
Sutton £6M but played for over 5 years and was instrumental week in week out for us

BBJ in the same bracket as CS

Zurawski will leave /be chased at the end of the season ...no resale value and not much use whilst here , he`ll need to be replaced , this will cost money

MON bought his share of donkeys but most of his big money signings were good

    CS/BBJ/Lenny/Thomo/Joos

all good players and all were valuable to us for most of their long contracts

  • At 07/12/07 17:13, antsman said…

    pfayr

that is what i was getting at

these players cost more but the turnover was less and the service was better, tho the higher wages should be considered

but for say CS at £6m we got 5 seasons out him

compare for example zurawski who we got 1 good season out same with big jan (so far) or Virgo at £1.5m

i am not saying which record is better but think as its something used as a major plus for GS its worth a debate

we are in team 3, where as with martin it was very much almost team 1/2 for many years not constant rebuilding

    Lennon £6m
    Douglas £1m
    Sutton £6m
    Laursen £1.5m
    Hedman £1.5m
    Fernandez £1m

    Sure I've missed someone.

Key issue for us going forward is build from a position of strength.

We have a world class goalkeeper. why not use some of the cash from the CL run to keep him for a few more years. So what if he wants £30k a week he is worth it.

We have naka and thank god for the time we have had him but i suspect his departure draws ever nearer.

We have a cohort of potentially special young players

    Aiden
    Brown
    Odea
    McDonald
    SNO
    wilson

    We have some solid pros

    M Brown
    McManus
    Hartley
    Pressley
    Naylor
    Doumbe
    Caldwell
    Killen
    kennedy

We also have some players that flatter to deceive and that need a kick up the backside.

    Jarosik
    JVOH
    donatie

We also have some surplus to requirements either because they are not good enough or circumstances dicate a departure

    Zurawski (magic my btm)
    Balde
    riordan

We need to take a leaf out of the Mon era and say team 4 is to be built for the future and only supplemented as required.

To restructure every year is a dangerous strategy.

My view would be punt those we have to punt and buy

    A back up to Artur

    A left back of quality

A centre half that has composure and pace

A midfield player with vision and drive. if that means selling Donatie and Jarosik i have no complaints

A reliable deadly striker to partner McDonald. Once again if JVOH goes then so be it.

This could be done for around £7 million.

Considering our net spend in the summer was £2 million and that we could get

Balde free up £1.5 in wages
    Zurawksi £100,000
    Riordan £500,000
    JVOH £2 m
    Donatie £800,000

We then could do this with a net spend of just over £2m is this to much to ask?

Ps maloney no thanks he had his chance

    the price question.

Accepting that many of the quoted figures bear as much relation to reality as hugh keevins' nose for the truth, if you are searching for value/return on investment you have to take into account the total spend i.e wages etc.

That is easy as it has all been printed in the accounts and essentially capital outlay + operating costs are well down as percentage of turnover under GS as under Martin, and that also takes into account the hangover of Alan T, Chris S, John H, Stan V and Bobo B. (even a bit of Stan P)

I am sure that Paul can give you much more accurate figures, but the accounts are publicised and the chairman's and chief exec statements refer accordingly.

magic and Jan, who now rarely play together. they cost jointly £4-5M and have a joint salary of say £35k per week

compare that to a £4-5M quality striker on £30k a week like say a john hartson

whats better? genuine quality or not but with a back up?

  • At 07/12/07 18:34, 109steps said…

    Antsman,

I think I can see where you are coming from but not sure.

Wages are expenditure and with any transfer fee, lost ticket sales due to disatisfaction will accrue under total cost.

Return could be contribution to team, money generated through major trophies, runs in competition, sell on fees, and others such as shirt sales, other merchandise and additional ticket sales etc.

Value is simply the ratio of one to the other.

I have no axe to grind here. I thought Martin was crucial and the right man and personality at the time.

I think now that Gordon is the right man to take us forward.

Football as a business always will be 'grey' concept until the day we become real customers and let our feet do the walking (not just by not attending) but by switching allegiances.

    Antsman,

No doubt about it that Sutty or Bindividual return on merchandise would far exceed anything so far we've created in the last two years.

But as I said you have to take into account Total costs and value, and the two last 16's will probably be worth 5-6 million on their own.

However if we could get another BBJ or Sutty even with the outlay of 6 mill required for each and that 'guaranteed' quarter final places or even semi's) then I am right with you!

The return would probably be worth it.

I think we may have the resources to do that, but I am not sure that the transfer targets are out there (at the moment).

However on a total team cost versus total team return at the moment, I believe that value is pretty good.

Of course feelgood factors such as the methods of achieving the return on investment are notional (a bit like the value of Ibrox).

Right that's the limit of my o'level economics so off to Pub!

And another thing, when will the Scottish media tire of their: why don't Celtic fans like Gordon Strachan, stories? Perhaps they persist because these can be trotted out ever more stridently whenever the team do well. The Evening Times's Thomas Jordan managed to write two stories on that theme just today.
Of course it's because they themselves hate him. How could he have been so brilliant and amusing when he was down there slaughtering the English journos with his pawky Scottish wit, only to have become now a snarling, disrespectful paranoic?
They'd just love him to leave.

Other potential opponents who have been ruled out prior to their' I BR#X Xmas glamour tie' against Lyon include:

-A stick found lying on Edmiston Drive. Risk of eye injury

-A kitten found in a shoebox in Kinning Park. Risk of ringworm

-Several bottles , each postmarked Barcelona, containing a mysterious pale golden liquid. Risk of almost anything.

-The guy from Kasabian who scored the wonder goal on SoccerAM when he was completely out of his face. [Think Bert Konterman on acid.] Risk too awful to contemplate

Antsman and Pfayr et all apologies I replied to you then had to leave earlier.

I think what Gordon has done is build a team without any superstars who have done nearly all of what is asked and sometimes more.

MoN had a team which also done that but with some world class stars. I believe MoN was too loyal to his players and did not move them on quick enough. Yes they dleivered but they required freshening up near the end...

I believe this may be traced back to him not getting picked for the European cup final when at forest. Probably a big assumption.

Both were/are the right guys at the right time.

Pfayr my middle value players were the guys you said.

antsman to nit pick only Neil Lennon was a first team pick out of the line up you put forward at 17:32 and the rest cant be measured against Henrik, lubo, johan etc.

Here is another wee bit since we are painted as a blog with a financial perspective.

Is Naka the most cost effective player ever. When you take in his goals ie man utd, killie last year also his shirts sales and media exposure in the far east. We must be able to to track his revenue generation quite easily.

Noel he missed the first 1 due to coming back from injury. He said he was fit but Clough did not believe him. If you read any book or interview when MoN is quoting on this he is deeply disappointed and it comes across as Clough never played him as he had cover. As the other guy who was coming back (I think Frank Clark could be wrong) was played.

As I say I think he was too loyal to players he bought. I think that the 4 main players he bought are up there with the best players I have saw play in the hoops but to increase guys contracts when they were on their way to finishing was not good.

The board have a part to play as well.

Here is a question for all. If Martin had stayed would he have kept Chris, John, Alan, Didier and Bobo in the team?

As I said both were/are right for the time.

    Totally agree about Nicholas.

I have now decided that he is/was 2 different people.
The first one is Charles de Goal.

Remeber the one at Ibrox when he left Dave McKinnon chasing shadows, takes on the whole defence and toe pokes by the keeper (ex Killie guy me finx) into the net and does his wee jink in front of the Broomloan.

Fast forward to last week and his major faux pas and his constant sniping at Celtic. He comments, live on Sky, immediatelt after the Shaktar game..."Celtic can't draw away from home in the UCL.".....Spartak Moscow ya numpty!! Total apologist and has nothing to give to the average viewer/listener on tactics/play/signimng targets..etc etc. When has Nicholas said anything of note that has made you think of a footballing issue in a different light. i.e he has made a valuable and interesting point? NEVER.

Tommy Burns was disgusted with him a few years back when TB told him something in private and Nicholas ran to the paperrs with it.

I now have managed to split him in 2. \The one who scored beautiful goals for my team and one who is a complete ham shanker.

If you remember this time last year I wearied over how the Brits celebrate Advent, a time of preparation and repentance. As soon as Christmas starts the fun ends. In my adult lifetime I cannot recall a single Christmas song being played on radio from St Stephen's Day on.

Spain fares well by comparison, Deo gratias.

I must say that I have never spent Christmas in Spain. When I was in first year, they changed the rule in Valladolid and allowed us home. We always jumped at the chance, as I'm sure you'll understand.

I kept that up during my seven years in Madrid; always desperate to get home, see my family, see the Bhoys …

But I know for a fact that in Spain, Advent is Advent. The O Antiphons are sung loud in convents and monasteries in every major city.

The retail industry there is onto the same game and is encouraging people to give presents from 'Papá Noel' on Christmas Eve night or on Christmas Day. But this is in addition to the tradition.

Weans get most of their presents on the feast of the Epiphany, when Jesus got his.

Now, some parents argue that this leaves too much of a school holiday to fill without presents, and then no time at all for the weans to play with their new toys before schools starts back. I can understand that.

If we lived in Spain now, I think we'd give presents on both feasts. How we divided it up would be up to greater powers (Mrs First).

The main reason I can confidently state that Spain does Advent and Christmas better, though, is that the big gathering is still Noche Buena (the Good Night), Christmas Eve. The finest food and wine comes out then. It's a time for huge family groups to gather and celebrate together.

Some, like Paul Le Guen's family in Brittany, will go on from there to Midnight Mass, but it would be fair to say there would be sitting room in most churches.

Christmas Day is more of the same, perhaps with a separate branch of the family.

After that, for the Twelve Days of Christmas, families, friends and neighbours visit each other constantly. They drink cava, eat special seasonal sweetmeats, exchange presents.

At the beginning of this post I mentioned that we could not get home to Scotland quickly enough to celebrate Christmas.

As the years go on, I find myself yearning for the Spanish Christmas I never knew. Maybe I'd be disappointed in it. Maybe it's what you make of it.

But pretending Advent is Christmas is ruining Christmas. Lord have mercy on us.

Excellent. That explains something that was a cultural shock for me at first in Spain: people didn't use to have Christmas trees in their houses (it's changing; you probably witnessed the arrival of the great Christmas Tree in the Cathedral Square in Milan on Tuesday), but they had nativity scenes.

These were and are, often, extremely elaborate. People had the Magi (who, naturally, started out of sight) move a tiny bit closer to the crib every day. Now, the thing is, in keeping with your ML2 tradition, people kept these going all through January, and at first I couldn't fathom it.

Good on them. Good on you.

    Sí, amigo.

Jazz Record Requests is available for listen again on the BBC Radio 3 website. It's great for trad jazz (say, 1930s till 1950s) with the occasional more modern thing chucked in.

Jazz, in my opinion, tends to be where the really serious musicians who don't go down the orchestral/classical route end up. Often it's people who had no real classical training, but people like Benny Goodman prove that the link is there.

    And singers?

Anybody who doesn't love Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Billie Holliday, Louis Armstrong, Dinah Washington etc does not love music.

Later, Dave Brubeck and Miles Davies took jazz up a notch and are fabulous. In the 70s, with Weather Report, Herbie Hancock etc, I cease to get it really.

I like Diana Krall (Mrs Declan McManus), but not so much Katie Melua etc as I don't think they're serious enough about the music. Personal opinion.

Give Jazz Record Requests a go. It's brilliant. As is the whole of Radio 3.

As Ancelotti admitted we have one world class player in AB, we have international class players in Hartley & Brown (and possibly although not consistently Nakamura), McGeady has definitely improved and is in the next batch with McDonald & JVOH and both Caldwell and O'Dea if they improve.
The rest of the squad is pretty average, but then even the Real Madrid's have their Gravesen's as well as their Ronaldo's & Raul's.

The Christmas season is upon us.
Technically WG reminds us that it is Advent.

We have 5 home games in the next month, including one against the Mighty Gretna.

15 points at home is a must.

We need to start off tomorrow with a convincing win.
I'm a wee bit concerned about it.

Some of our players looked a little shell shocked on Tuesday, and Skippy and Brown may be injury worries.

Like Teddy Bear, I believe we should be able to field a few fringe players and still comfortably beat a side losing an average of almost two goals a game.

St Mirren should present little threat to us. They have found the net only 9 times this season.

So it's really in the hands of our attackers. Now is the opportunity for JVOH and McDonald to boost their goal tallies. JVOH should be relishing the prospect of facing the Saints' more than generous defence.
Scott Brown and Hartley need to dominate midfield and get the ball to McGeady to let him create gaps for the strikers and advanced midfielders.

I am sure the Boss has informed his team how important a convincing confidence boosting win is tomorrow, and the bhoys will be keen to recover from Tuesday's disappointment.

I expect to see a couple of substitutions shortly after half time when the game is won, so perhaps Majiec will get a chance to show some form.

'GG predicting a 4 goal victory.

the next month will have a major bearing on the outcome of the season

They were proud of the players for giving everything for the cause, even if they lost,

December 8th has conjured a mixed bag of results and it hasn't all been sweetness and light. However it was the date in 1888 for Celtic's fifth-ever Scottish Cup tie and this happened :-

    Celtic 9 Clyde 2

Willie Groves got 4, Tom Maley got 3 and Jimmy McLaren and Neil McCallum got the others in front of 8,000. So historically it seems to be a day that favours multiple-goal scorers.

The player's Polish representative Jerzy Kopiec expects to hold talks with the club next week and claims Zurawski could be joining forces with David Beckham in the New Year.

"The offer from Galaxy is very serious," he told the Scottish Daily Mail.

Jimmy ; " Sweet Lord Jesus, come to my help. I'll do anything if you save me. "

Jesus : " OK Jimmy, trust in me and I will save you. Let go of the branch. "

    "wanting" it.

As I said,or pehaps didn't,it may well do Celtic some good in the future.

If this may be the case, then I wish you all the best.

    Though,not necessarily your club.

I was given pelters for wanting Celtic to lose the year before last,so your club would not qualify for the Champions League.

    And strangely,mostly from celtic supporters.

The fact that i would rather support just about any team apart from your own in Europe, does not blind me to the fact that you may actually do us some good by qualifying.

But then again,as Paul is constantly saying, perhaps it would be better if you dropped into the UEFA cup,and won a couple of games against, perhaps Aberdeen,if they qualify.

In fact I will take that back,i would prefer Aberdeen to beat you twice.

Same points for the country, after all.

I know it doesn't make much sense, but Good luck to yersel, but even after all the reasoning and civil conversation above.
