German international full back, Andreas Hinkel, 25, has agreed terms to join Celtic on 1 January, and will be available to play in the 2 January game against Rangers.
The player was expected to leave Sevilla in the forthcoming transfer window, with Borussia Dortmund thought to be the most likely destination, but Celtic outbid their German rivals.
Congratulations to Gordon Strachan and Peter Lawwell for capturing such a high profile international player.
Welcome Andreas.

Who's next - The silly season has arrived.
I'm not too keen on McFadden, on his day he can be a good player but those days are few and far between, but who knows maybe putting on the hoops might make him more consistant, he always look more consistant when playing for Scotland rather than with Everton. I think he we be another Kenny Miller, in that for a striker he does not score that much. I'd take Shaun back before McFadden.

COMMENT-BODY:well done paul-- if you want celtic news this is the place.
this is a high profile signing , no doubt.
i was concerned that we were making a lot of cheap signings that had potential.
that would mean some work out (macdonald, naylor 1st season)
but most would not (cauldwell, donati, virgo, sno, killen,)
the free transfer market requires a lot of luck; a success rate of 1 in 3 would be considered good.
If we are to press home our financial advantage over minty's X1 then it will be by signings like todays.
we can never know, for sure, whether any signing will be an outstanding success (the surprise success of henke) or whether they will be an abysmal failure ( the surprisingly dysmal gravesen)
but we increase our chances of success when we stop shopping at the free transfer shop

COMMENT-BODY:Spain's equivalent of April Fools' Day is Dec. 28
Sunday April 1, 2007
If you should be in a Spanish-speaking country today and play a joke on your friends and follow that up with a shout of "¡Tontos de abril!" chances are you'll get nothing but blank stares as a reaction. The minor U.S. holiday of April Fools' Day is little known in Spain and Latin America, but there a rough equivalent, el Día de los Santos Inocentes, observed on Dec. 28.
The day, observed in Spain (especially the southern areas) and parts of Latin America, is observed in much the same way as April Fools' Day. But when the prankster is ready to reveal the joke, the saying is "¡Inocente, inocente!" or "Innocent one, innocent one!"
In its origins, the day is a sort of gallows humor. The Day of the Innocents observes the day when, according to the Gospel of Matthew in the Bible, King Herod ordered the baby boys under 2 years old in Bethlehem to be killed because he was afraid that the baby Jesus born there would become a rival. As it turned out, though, the baby Jesus had been taken away to Egypt by Mary and Joseph. So the "joke" was on Herod, and thus followed the tradition of tricking friends on that day. (This is a sad story to be sure, but according to tradition the babies murdered in Jesus' stead went to heaven as the first Christian martyrs.)

Peter Martin has just proved himself an absolute clown of the highest calibre. I don't know whether this is true or not, but someone told me he changed his name from McGuire or some other such thing ......... so clearly HE was prepared to accept it, once.
That makes him a coward, and a fool. Never ONCE has he taken a position or a stand. I think he owes an enormous apology to the families of people killed or wounded in sectarian violence throughout the years.
Despicable, cowardly, immoral remarks.
He also said during the same statement that "it wasn't always illegal ...... " but then neither was slavery, or infanticide and in certain countries of the world national POLICY has been to kill those who didn't measure up to the accepted "national standard."
It astounds me halfwits like this get PAID for talking such crap.

The more I listen to this man the more I dislike him, as you say, he did the professional deed poll bit and is a well known Celtic man.
He constantly avoids touchy subjects like discussing sectarianism "lets stick to the football" and the sycophancy shown to "Walter" by the mainstream media- people like him- even though co-presenter Graham Speirs freely admits the former is clearly still a problem and the latter is a fact.
Sad and pathetic, really.

You certainly know how to cheer someone up,I've been pretty low for a couple of weeks, but with the news that we signed,Andreas Hinkel.
And the Brazilean Coelho on his way over to sign on the dotted line, things are looking up.
Dare I say we have aquired another new signing in Bobo,a man who I admired as a stopper, never played for a year, and been invited by Gordon to get his boots back on,yes things can only get better.
Another three or four more before the end of January, and I'll be a happy chappie.
BBs awaits to-morrow,where we can all clap each other on the back, and say what a manager we have in Gordon.
Do we thank our new Chairman, on opening the purse strings a little wider,or is that going a bit far.
And lastly I'd like to thank Smashing Milk Bottles on here,
You've made a happy man, even happier, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

It was in response to a caller who was making a point about singing at Inverness a couple of weeks ago, to be honest I did not hear the start of the question or what angle the caller was coming from.
The jist of the response was the usual wooly stuff about sectarianism- the kryptonite effect it has on PMMcG is clear- but then it slipped out that sectarian behaviour was acceptable once upon a time, i.e. before the involvement of UEFA, and, presumably by extension, the lawmakers.
I assume the recording can be accessed on Clyde website though appreciate that this will give them an unwelcome "hit".

I assume that Hinkel's arrival means that Coelho is not on the agenda - also assuming that if and when Mark Wilson and Doumbe regain fitness, they will be the understudy?
What about reports linking us with Mendy or Murphy? Are they still a goer - and would this mean that Lee Naylor would drop down the pecking order?
With proper full-backs and cover in place, does this mean that one or more of Pressley, O'Dea, McManus, Balde and Caldwell are for the off in January?
Anybody in a position to enlighten me?

timing is EVERYTHING!
before the united game i was dubious about our form and thought it would be a really tough run in.
since then we seen a very tight defensive performance from our defence, fluent fast attacking from our midfield, and we have the top 2 strikers in the league.
We have now added REAL quality to the full back position (both of which are our sides real weaknesses) with another en route.
info on here suggesting another midfielder is en route and constant murmurs regarding the king of kings....
i am sooooo confident now.
and to hit top form at this time of year, with the darnel having so many away matches coming up soon.
i think we could find ourselves striding away with this league again.
and i dont want to hear any rubbish about strachan being rubbish and not having a real challenge.
the league was this close in his first year....
that hearts game bacame our springboard for the rest of the season.
and i see the new years game as being this years too.

COMMENT-BODY:Take a look at Valencia right now and you'll see how tough a job Gordon Strachan had in having to rebuild Celtic.
Ronald Koeman has told senior squad members David Albelda, Santiago Cañizares and Miguel Angulo that they're out of his plans.
Club president Juan Soler has said today that these players are still employees of the club and are going nowhere and that the dispute is down to Koeman.
The squad have had this week off, but turned up for training this afternoon, a public event at most Spanish clubs. Fans turned out to express their support for the players and to tell Koeman and his assistant José Mari Bakero to chase themselves back to Barcelona.
As you know, season ticket holders at Spanish clubs get to elect the club president. There are usual two prominent candidates who present an agenda, including signing targets, which carry the same weight as electoral promises.
Juan Soler's main rival for the presidency is Vicente Soriano, also the second biggest shareholder at the club. Soriano is already preparing his electoral manifesto and has gone public today with his thoughts on the current situation. He said: "If I was in charge, Koeman wouldn't last ten more minutes."
The fans want Rafa Benítez back.
I think they think modern life is rubbish.

Just a wee tale from Tannadice, had the misfortune to be standing behind the goal a few rows in front of some women, when JVOH planted the header in and i was rolling about in the seats i noticed the three of them standing arms folded not celebrating...i asked why not and they replied its because he's a fat useless lazy b@£$%^$£ and Riordan should be on instead of him...I took a wee peek after we scored the second and sure enough Mick wasnt on thier list of liked players either.
Is this what its come to in the Strachan>anti strachan fight...do we only celebrate when players we like score?
The atmosphere at Tannadice was top notch even before the game you could feel the support was up for a fight and ready to get behind the team...its a great feeling...
One other point has anyone ever been on Vital Celtic! I've never read so much drivel from so called fellow celts RK...TicV..hoopmo just complete tosh..thier thread about Hinkel is laugh a minute...One minute he's the best thing ever...then when the record say he's going to Dortmund he becomes useless and the celtic board are being laughed at by the whole of europe ...now he's great again but the board still have paid to much....crazy days!

Following hot on the heels of a first clean sheet away from home, certainly the defensive situation is looking up.
Bobo is like a new signing in the fact that he has played his first game of the season. Andreas Hinkel IS a new signing. Naka will also add fresh impetus!
Add to those Shaun Maloney plus one more signing and we will have survived a major scare on the defense of the SPL Title.
Celtic should see this as a warning, all fans should see this as a signal of intent and get behind the team/management/board unreservedly so that our hope and dreams can be achieved.
Hopefully, this will be the 'window' through which we watch our rivals disappear as we move on to a new level!

Bet you he is regretting ever getting mixed up with John Halliwell. Arsed up his career for him. Still only young can make amends if he's allowed to return.
Thing what baffles me is MON will add to his squad but also if he was to pick his first 11 as it just now then Shaun would not feature.
It's like August MON played him before the windy shuts. Shaun scored a few and would not release him. It's same now. If Shaun is still at Villa after this window then i would assume he will never return and MON will put him into cold storage until he needs a bit of magic in the last 10 mins of a game.
By the way that's 2 midfielders that potentially coming from what you have heard. Does that mean we might see the end of Sno and Jiri?
I'll send you a case mate. Do you think a midfielder will be brought in for the game against Rangers?
I see the boy Cohelo is arriving and everything has been agreed. Maybe WGS might be contemplating using him in a wide right role in midfield in fron of Hinkel? Good thing about Hinkel is that he can play left as well.
As Metzelder not getting a game a Real maybe we should try and link him and Andreas together. Just a thought:)

COMMENT-BODY:Maybe the signing of Hinkel and return of Naka may allow us to see the best of JVOH.
Although i have been pretty disappointed in the big man i don't think enough service has been going in to him and Scott from the midfield mainy from the wide areas.
With an attacking full back like Hinkel maybe Jan will be dreaming of goals, goals, goals. After the career this boy has had in Holland he can't be that bad.

COMMENT-BODY:If Jan is given good service he'll put the ball in the net almost every time. His goals to game ratio is very impressive but his injuries have stopped him from ever hitting full flow for an extended period. I have a good feeling he's over these injuries. In my opinion I think he's one of our genuinely class players alongside Naka, Boruc, and Hinkel.

Thanks for the clarification re the King.
I agree, JVoH will be much more effective with crosses from the left or right, not the deep punts up the park we have seen recently. His workrate has improved over the past 3 games - as has his goals ratio.
The only reservation that lingers with me about the big man is his lack of pace.

COMMENT-BODY:Problem with Shaun is that we will wait forever for MON to make up his mind - no decision is his default modus operandi.
MON is a great motivator and sound tactician - but I am sure that he can't really decide whether to drink tea or coffee when asked.
For that reason alone, I would think that any return is dead - unless Shaun did actually put in a transfer request and tell his agent to GTF.

Somebody better tell him to stop scoring though:) Seriously 2 goals aginst Chelsea i would be ecstatic. He never even battered an eye lid. It was as if he mind was somewhere else and didn't want to be there.
What's you take on the Kings return? I say nae chance. Unless Lawwell planning a Walter Smith when going for nine in a row he brought back Hately to stike fear into us. It worked as well.
Maybe Pistol Pete hasn't forgot that day!!

And why not.... you may ask?
If he came back.....
He could not, ...in fact... WOULD NOT .....be GUARANTEED, a berth in the Foist Eleven...
He would only get an occasional game... and he would be right back where he started from...sitting on the Bench...like he is in Aston.

You just stirred up another hornets nest again with your Henke answer. Hopefully it will turn out like the Hinkel prediction.
As Henke has tasted Man U already i would be hopeful that he would choose us over them this time. Finish off in style!! Plus we got Barca to play. How many guy's could see that they scored for both Barca and Celtic against each other. Would be quite a fairytale:)
The only challeneg i see left for him is seeing we are in the last 16try and exercise the ghost of Seville.
Wishfull thinking though!! Can't see it materialising.
Fergie got Saha, Tevez, Rooney all fit at the moment. Can't be that greedy can he?

The old media are still speculating on McFadden arriving soon. I wonder if this would definately dash any possibility of the fantastic Vladimir Bystrov arriving at Celtic as rumoured on a few sites? I suspect that one would go the way of the Tymoschuk saga anyway but it is good manners to ask!

Regardless of that i still reckon Shaun woul;d rather fight for his place here that Aston. In my opinion Gordon would get him to re capture his old form and if so would be a regular for me. Both him and Aiden could easily be complemented in the same team.
We are relying to much on young Aiden. Teams have cotton on to this. Over the past few weeks we could have done with someone like Shaun.

COMMENT-BODY:Paul67 and Ayrtic67:Well done for bringing CQN the first confirmation today that Andreas Hinkel is signing for Celtic.
But some of the rants from other posters against the old media conveniently ignore the very pertinent fact that it was indeed the nasty old media who initially brought CQN's attention to Celtic's interest in Herr Hinkel.
Spanish and German newspapers (followed by their Scottish counterparts) were first to tell the world of Celtic's moves for Hinkel and yesterday they were reporting that Celtic were Sevilla's preferred bidders after having a £2.1million offer accepted.
Keep The Faith acknowledged before noon today that "widespread media reports" said Celtic were in pursuit of Hinkel after Sevilla accepted the Celtic bid.
That doesn't mean to say that the deal was a cert to go through- the medical could have been failed, Hinkel could have said "no" etc- but certainly the CQN double act proved that they have good Celtic contacts by being first with the deal confirmation.
The assertion that our two 67s success in bringing CQN the deal confirmation proved that the old media were somehow not doing their job is a mistaken notion that shows scant understanding of print journalism.
Newspapers are constrained by rigid publishing deadlines allied to timeframes.
Some times they will have an exclusive that falls within those deadlines many other times they may have an inside track that they can only watch appear in more immediate media such as the internet or the broadcast field.
No matter where a story breaks- whether it be CQN, Radio or television- if it happens in the morning or even the afternoon then there is no way that a newspaper is going to be first with the news.
CQN came up trumps today and, once again, well done to the lads involved. But I am sure that you will find that newspapers break more than their fair share of stories and publishing times mean it is impossible for them to be first with every story.
I am delighted that Gordon Strachan has finally bought the right back that we have craved since August.
But I am not going to get too carried away until I have seen him perform in the Hoops because I was badly wrong with our last big signing from Spain.
A lot of people have been getting carried away with the 17 caps that Hinkel won.
And say he has come to Celtic for regular first team football to put him in the shop window for Euro 2008.
But a study of his internationals record shows that he has actually played very few competitive internationals for Germany.
The right back won his first cap in a friendly against Serbia and Montenegro in April 2003 shortly after his 21st bithday and won his second cap in another friendly against Canada in June 2003.
In Germany's Euro 2004 qualifying campaign he was an unused substitute five times before finally winning his first competitive cap in October 2003 in a 3-0 win over Iceland.
But he has not played at competitive international level in either of the two main Championships (European and World Cup) since , although he did made two Confederations Cup appearances against Mexico and Argentina on home soil in 2005.
Hinkel was in the Germany squad for Euro 2004, but didn't play in any of the three group games that resulted in an unusually early exit.
He then failed to even make the squad when Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup just before his four million Euro move to Sevilla.
And he wasn't chosen for any of the 12 Euro 2008 qualifiers that led to Germany qualifying for Austria and Switzerland.
So I would have to conclude that his chances of being at Euro 2008 are slim.
Throw in the fact that he has played just 15 La Liga games (two this season) in one and a half seasons at Sevilla and after all that bench-warming you have to question whether he is ready for January 2.
I saw Hinkel at Celtic Park in 2003 for Stuttgart and there is no doubt that he is a very decent player- certainly you would imagine he was good enough for the SPL- but then did we not think the same about Gravesen and Jarosik?
The lad was a great prospect as a youngster at Stuttgart, but his career has stood still a little since injury trouble at Stuttgart.
Like Ardoch I am slightly worried when I hear him described as an over-lapping, attacking full back. I prefer to read: "a no-nonsense, out-and-out defender."
But in terms of the right back slot I am pleased because I think he is better than the options we have had to use this season.
Now I just pray that Hinkel's arrival does not mean Caldwell replacing Balde at centre back.
