Gretna postponement pays off

Rangers appeared so rested after the postponement of their SPL game against Gretna on Sunday they were almost docile against Lyon last night, resulting in the only British, Champions League group stage failure. Perhaps the Wiley Wisdom of Walter we have heard so much about this last week has little substance.

Still, five British teams in the last 16 might not be a 100% record, but with the manner of last night’s failure emphasising just how tough this competition is; five out of six clubs progressing is remarkable nonetheless.

Special credit should go to Celtic, who reached the knock out stage despite fielding eight players who were products of their own, or another SPL club’s youth development system, for some of their group games.

Conventional wisdom suggests it is impossible to succeed when drawing on such a small pool of talent, but conventional wisdom seldom considers the attributes of unconventionally successful football managers.

Just as there are no easy group stage opponents, there are no easy group winners, although Sevilla are currently ninth place in the Spanish league, and despite retaining the Uefa Cup at Hampden in May, would be my preferred opponent when the draw is made on 21 December.

Talk of British teams is counter-productive. I'm not just speaking as an independence-supporting republican.

There are moves afoot in the world of football to take away the unique recognition the soi-disant Home nations receive for their part in inventing the modern game, but it's an anachronism that sits unfavourably with some groups of clubs and national teams.

We would do well to drop it with equal alacrity as the OF tag.

The SFA could give a lead by having a non-unionist URL. Unless they're being deliberately ironic.

I said last night that the huns would come out and start going on about winning the Uefa cup.
Sky sports news has just interviewed a huns fan rep who said that winning the Uefa cup would make up for not going thru to the last 16 of the Champs League.
    Priceless!

Repeated from end of last thread:

Malone, our 2002-3 Euro earnings were reduced due to the fact that we did not play in the CL group stage. Rangers have done that and pocketed that cash already, and can now look forward to probably at least 2 more home gates from the UEFA Cup. Note that they get a UEFA Cup group runner-up first, so potential opponents are likely to be from: Zenit, Panathinaikos, Fiorentina, Basel, Zurich, Braga, Spurs or Helsingborgs. Even they should be able to beat most of that lot over 2 games.

And for the romanticists out there I expect Henke to announce his retirement imminently and take no further part in this season's UEFA Cup.

Bambi, no I am not suggesting that Rangers will go on an extended Ueaf [sic] Cup run. However, they may go on a run in the UEFA Cup. :o)

pfayr, aye, but more than likely the gate receipts from just one more game! :o(

C1st -At the risk of spoiling a grand day for European football[ and having the Jeremy Kyle CSC run amok on the Blog] what's wrong with being British? Are the Celts not British, and vice-versa?

We need to reclaim Britishness from those who think it only exists post-1707, and return it back to its ancient, woad-daubed roots.

Give Britain back to the British, and save it from the Brits.

Celtic_first, the talk of the UK losing it unique status in football terms will never happen as UEFA, need as many countires under it influence as possible to counter the threat from FIFA, so the more countires the better, and I dont see how it affects any other countries, if we are not good enough we just would lose the places in the CL and UEFA cup.

Some comments on the last thread.

Anyone who is happy with lower attendances at Celtic park because they believe that the support is better,is deluded.

Lower attendances isn't the road to ruin.It is ruin.

We won't make an additional £15mill from another CL game (we are only guaranteed one tie ).

We have a tight budget,we won't spend big in Jan ,unless we sell big in Jan.

Rangers are favourites to win there game in hand ,and unless we beat them in Jan,they would be likely to go top of the league.
We MUST beat them in Jan.

What Gordon Strachan has achieved in getting us to the last 16 is a real bonus. He and the team have punched above there weight in this arena.

However, we must win the SPL.

Walter will be under big pressure if we pump them in Jan.
Likewise if we are beaten and Rangers march towards a treble. Mr Strachan will feel an immense weight on his shoulders.

Today is a day to gloat.

    Sweet!

There's a view that it's actually working in our favour.

The more DJ/Hugh/Darryl etc bat away any criticism of Wally & Co (disagree with the status quo and you're either a 'scattergun' reactionary or lifelong anti-Smith-ite) and last nights phone-in was just typical, the longer it'll take their fans to call for change.

So when they continue to leave Boyd on the bench, Burke in the wild, just one-up-front, lack inspirational match-winners, leave creaky oldsters in defence, promise 'big-name' signings (and not bosmans, honest) etc etc... the better for us, non?

Of the teams we can face (Man U, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Sevilla, Barcelona or Porto) I'm not sure who we should be hoping for. Every one of them would fancy themselves to beat us, but every one of them could leave Parkhead with a headache. I'm of a view that we're better-off against bigger teams, where we rally against the insurmountable enemy. I fear that we may underestimate Sevilla. Barca may be just too good for even our fortress. My romantic side says Real Madrid. I think we'd beat Chelsea though :)

The odds of us getting Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Sevilla, Barcelona or Porto are greatly reduced by Liverpool and Arsenal finishing second in their group. As they cannot play Man U or Chelsea they each have to play one of these five teams.

That drops the available teams to three from these five plus the two english clubs.

One of these three clubs is likely to be Inter Milan as Roma also finished second in their group

I've concluded my in depth (not!) statistical analysis of the 2007-8 Champions League group stage and I can now reveal the shocking truth as far as Celtic & Rangers are concerned. These are their respective rankings (out of 32) when compared to all group stage participants...

Total shots (most): Celtic 28th, Rangers equal worst
(Most) Shots on target: Celtic 25th=, Rangers 28th=
(Most) Goals scored: Celtic 24th=, Rangers 18th=
(Least) Goals conceded: Celtic 11th=, Rangers 19th=
(Most) Corners won: Celtic 26th, Rangers 28th
Caught offside (most): Celtic 30th, Rangers 24th
(Most) Yellow cards: Celtic 16th=, Rangers equal worst
(Highest) %-age possession: Celtic 22nd=, Rangers equal lowest
(Most) Points won: Celtic 15th, Rangers 17th=

These stats seem to indicate that neither Celtic nor Rangers offered much in an attacking sense in the grand scheme of things, both ranking particularly low in terms of shots, corners & offsides... all indicators of a team's attacking authority on a game. And both looked rather poor in terms of discipline, with no team earning more yellow cards than Rangers, and Celtic having the individual player who committed the most fouls (Scott Brown).

We're going to have to buck our ideas up a lot if we are to get any further in the competition!

We top the league of 16 from this perspective:

    Celtic, Scotland, Population 5 million
    Portugal, 11 million
    Greece, 11 million
    England, 51 million
    Italy, 58 million
    France, 60 million
    Turkey,71 million
    Germany, 82 million

It is notable that one third of our SPL bookings this season came in one game, and we must have a few players only a yellow card or two away from a suspension.

Expect to see bookings in the next four SPL games for Boruc, Caldwell, O'Dea, McManus, Hartley, Donati, Brown, Jarosik, McGeady, JVoH and McDonald.

With that lot suspended in addition to our injury list, we'd be unable to fulfil the fixture on 2nd January, and the SPL would be forced to award the game to Rangers by default.

much as i am enjoying the aftermath of last nights events, i have a slightly unpleasant feeling when i think about the CL as a whole....

seeding systems generally are a bad idea at the group stages of the cl....to compound that by not allowing clubs from the same country to be drawn together is a disgraceful carve up...

when you get to the last 16 stage there is no question in my mind that there should be a free draw and yet again uefa favour the big countries with a favourable home tie in the second game and ridiculously stipulate that teams from the same country cannot meet..

Uefa's motivation is to have a final with 2 teams drawn from england spain or Italy...they must have been sick to their boots a couple of years ago when porto got through against monaco....

...enjoyable though it is to participate in this competition, it would be much better if once the teams got to a group stage that there was no seeding , no rule over teams from the same country meeting and no 2nd game advantage in the knockout stage....but i suppose that would mean sport took precedence over commerce....probably unthinkable for uefa

    paul67

do you know if the club are lobbying for any changes to the distrubtion of tv monies, given that our games are now shown UK wide on Sky.....it is surely an anaomaly that we receive a share based only on the scottish market....we should receive the same share as the english participants if our games are shown as part of that contract

I've noticed that Celtic's shots to goals ratio is normally quite high, we might not shoot a lot but when we do they often go in the back of the net.

There are plenty teams in Europe who'd shoot on sight and therefore have a high number of shots on goal.

Do you know the win bonus teams get in the UEFA? I think it's around £500,000 in the CL and £200,000 for a draw.

    TheRags,

    Henrik Largsson?
    Chris Sutton Coldfield?

Also, i believe Venegoor and Hesselink were family names as opposed to locations:

The name derives from the 17th century, when two farming families in the Enschede area of the Netherlands intermarried. Both the Vennegoor and Hesselink names carried equal social weight, and so - rather than choose between them - they chose to use both. "Of" in Dutch translates to "or" in English, which would mean that a strict translation of his name would read 'Jan Vennegoor or Hesselink'

Here is my 'They couldn't give a T*ss about Celtic' starting 11, some of the players I've picked might be controversial as in Paddy C but I have never forgave him about his comments last year on the chances of the bhoys against Manure and he has become Mr Manure.

Players like Slater I might have been a bit unfair about, did he not care about the bhoys or was he just carp.

There were an abundance of forwards to pick from though and that was difficult, I know some people would put SM in the team but I am holding out to see if he comes back. CN is in it because he left to early but mainly for his TV work and because he sits besides that grinning Orc on Sky.

Just been looking at the coefficient position - yes I'm one of those sad people who likes spreadsheets.

We started the season ranked 24th in Europe, so are punching above our weight to make the top 16. However, we are provisionally ranked 36th for next season due to the Seville points being disregarded. Getting through the next round could potentially jump us up to 30th. But either way we are looking at pot 3 or even pot 4 next season. That's after we qualify directly as Champions of course!

Rangers started the season ranked 45th, so last 32 of the UEFA Cup would be about their natural level. But next season they are provisionally 33rd. A couple of rounds progress in the UEFA could see them as high as 24th!

Still, there is only one Scottish team that has made the top table 2 years in a row! Let's not worry about next season as yet.

Paul67, Porto would be my top pick for the next round. Seville probably second, but their European form is much better than their league record.

THEY may not have the prestige tie that Celtic will get for their magnificent efforts in getting through their tie, and there will also be a reduction in revenue from maybe £4million to somewhere near half that.

Darcheville said: "I always take responsibility for myself but the referee got it wrong. Maybe it was a yellow card. I was very surprised when I saw the red card."

"But the Slovakian official, who was heavily criticised for his handling of the 2003 Uefa Cup Final between Celtic and Porto, didn't even book the player." _ Lubos Michel finally gets criticism from the laptop loyal .... Mmmhhh wonder why ?

"And Sasa rapped: "I was fouled after I had played the ball. The player deserved a yellow card or even a red card for it. But the referee didn't do anything.

I was involved in a magazine cover customer relationship management a number of years ago and sat on a judging panel for some awards.

One of the best new business ideas we came across was a new bank in Germany set up by the children of Turkish immigrants specifically for the Turkish community, who had become more affluent and needed and wanted mortgages and other services.

They could get them from German banks, of course, but the culture of the new bank just made everything easier to follow for them.

not been able to post for quite a while but wanted to comment on article by paul a while ago about the "target man" method by celtic.
This is not a phenomenon started with mark(o) viduka, who by no stretch of the imagination was a target man.
    Are you forgetting pierre, cascarino?

    onto the game on tuesday.
sure scott brown improved, wouldnt be hard to improve on his performances over the last few months. He has been shocking and played quite well on tuesday but expect so much more. I love the guy and think he will be a revelation for us, but he needs to get involved in games more, improve his touch and his passing over small distances is shocking, snoman must rightly think every touch of his is rounded on but brown is given so much leeway.
This is my point, in my opinion every celtic player should be given the leeway brown is given.
IN my opinion brown has been as poor if not poorer than donati, sno, jirosik etc over last period of few months.
However you do not hear the groans at his (frequent) poor passes that are heard when any pass from aforementioned players goes astray.

I find hypocrisy among celtic fans staggering. Bobo is not worth 28k so all his performances now judged on that. If being consistent then browns performaces should be based on fact we paid almost £5m for him. Has he played like a £5m player?
He did well against benfica when moved to right, had a fabulous game against hearts at parkhead and thats the sum total.
Dont get me wrong i think he will be great and would never drop him but at moment we arent getting value for money from him yet he is immune to criticism.
Maybe its just cos he looks like the king that he gets away with it, just wish that all the others were given such a platform and leeway to perform and sure their confidence and performaces would improve also.

I look at Sno's performances and cant fathom why the such intense criticism he recieves, he contributed more in his cameo against st mirren than the entire midfield. MY only conclusion is there is a form of racism against him from a section of supporters at club.

On the crowd on tuesday, no real surprise really.
As posted a few months ago, check out the main stand at these games.
st mirren? full. falkirk? full. 90th minute? full.

On the game some commented on falkirks play, what about celtics play first 15 mins? could have had 4 in that period alone. falkirk had ball once game over as a contest, their penalty as much as the one when JVOH headed onto guy on line.
Referee and north stand linesman were shocking all game.

As for Moutinho, did ok, falkirk fans didnt have a high opinion of him last year, has added a few goals this year but if we sign him as some on here suggested then a huge step back for us, we shouldnt even be considering a player like that.

sorry to bore yous, i know its not very up to date.

so edward, cousins the new scapegoat for the fans/media? strange as i thought your lot were particularly fond of your cousins? :) :) :)

there is an element within the support who I think are guilty of racism. Their prejudice will form part of the volley of criticism that Sno endures. By "element" and I am not referring to a distinct organised group of individuals that might be found at other clubs. However, references to "black this" or "black that" are not uncommon at Celtic Park. My own prejudices suggest that those who utter such remarks are guilty only of a lack of education as opposed to anything more sinister. Not that this makes it any more excusable or acceptable.

ardoch it was me who mentioned racism.
like malceye i do not think it is "sinister" racism and more to do with their age/ upbringing at that time but it is racism nonetheless.
Agathe got it as have many away players from those around me, black this and monkey are not uncommon utterances. Often a player they have never seen before will have a comment made as he comes of the bench. I do not think they mean this maliciously but this vocab has been part of their life and they are too far on in age to change now, it is just part of their common speak.
Sno's performances have not merited the abuse he takes from around me, it is beyond not liking him as a player and his colour can be the only thing that i think of.

    Away Kit last night
    Lyon to blame for this,
they knew what they were doing with regards to kit choice.

White is their home kit which should have been worn automatically, allowing Rangers to play in the home kit.

Lyon took the decision (in my opinion) to wear their European away kit to create a clash with our blue, therefore leaving Rangers with no choice but to play in white.

Subtle mind games from the French.

    My dear friend, 3inarow...

I do not beg to differ.

Mr.Sno drew the ire of a wide section of the Celtic Support, by his deficiencies..... Slow in Reaction Time.... Dallying when he should have been Sallying... A plethora of Mis-directed passes....

In long or short... Sno deserved to be reviled.. he did not deserve to be Booed... but that is a Personal Choice which was made be some supporters...and I stand by in my defense of EVERYBODY being allowed to EXPRESS themselves....as THEY SEE FIT.....in short... That is their Inalienable Right!

If A number of Celtic Fans, decide that Mr.Sno's Soccer skill was being subdued by deficiencies in his applicatian of same.... and therefore, by their lights...it boded for a spot...or a splash of the Boo Factor... then....

    Who am I to disagree?

The same judgment in my part was extant... in the Case of Didi Agathe....

He was a gay deceiver... everyone Knew that he had the Fleetness of Foot...to out race...anyone that he came up against... yet he persisted in wasting this factor, by aimless running... and therefore, succeeded in enraging the delicate temperament of many Celtic Fans...including this writer.

Whether he got his allotment of Boos.... is neither here nor there...as I have dealt with my feeling on that..elsewhere.

    In Both cases...

Racism, was never an Ingredient in the Revilement Mix.

I refuse to believe that there is/was, any hint or tint of the Race Card at the crux of the Desparagements that were/are showered on Either player.

Racism, is a subject, that I normally would not breech.

In this case...I have made an exception....

    No, my friend....

A player.... Any player to be more precise... who is vocally abused by a fan...is by common sense...

Needing that little bit of Rough encouragement to draw his attention to the fact that He ....the Player, that is...

IS SIMPLY NOT UP BEHAVING UP TO SNUFF... and it is therefore being suggested..however crudely...

THAT HE SHOULD GET HIS FINGER OUT... FORTHWITH!

Never, underestimate the Perspicacity of the average Celtic Fan...

He knows when a Player deserves the Ragged Shaft.....or Not!

And he is not slow in informing his target, either.

Mr.Sno has improved his game.. and whether one agrees with me..in that...it does not change the fact... that Mr. Sno HAS MENDED HIS WAYS...and ....Started to Fly in the right direction.

Therefore.... the chastened Mr.Sno... now, knows to what limits of patience..that the Average Celtic will endure, before there will be unseemly(to the limit breecher)repercussions.

I expect that Mr.Sno will now continue to improve....and the cat-calls will therefore lessen to insignificance.....

    Kojo.
    Yer pal....who likes ye.

There was a good rebuttal today (they did not print my less good one). This guy seemed honestly to believe that we got equal treatment with Rangers. The Old Firm tag works a treat as a smokescreen for the favouritism that is rife in Scottish football.

Maybe it's Sno's size and style that attract so much criticism. All his movements seem big and deliberate, as if he feels that he has just a nano-second more than everybody else thinks he has. This leads to a sort of ecstasy of angst amongst the support. It has to be said that quite often he does seem to have that extra instant.
I must say, though that anyone who uses the word,"monkey" or the word,"black" as abuse, is racist. No question.

Welcome Blantyretim. Thanks for the update on John Fallon

Kojo, ‘tis a funny old world. The Lions had a web site to assist with the commercial venture, and, at the time, www.lisbonlions.com would direct you there. When time moved on, the Lions halted their web site and commercial venture, now the aforementioned url take you to a most delightful place.

68/1. Hmmm. You know what? Any team who can reach the quarter final can harbour thoughts about the final itself, and any team who can reach the final…..

I’ll hold my coins until after the draw, but if bets are to be placed, they will need to happen before January, no point allowing the odds-maker to change things as a result of the transfer window.

It may be a help to those like me, who will be sitting next Frid by the computer awaiting the draw in order to book flights, to understand how the parameters are set and the odds on Celtic being drawn against a particular team.

    1. No team can be drawn against a team from the same qualifying Group.
    2. No team may be drawn against a team from the same country.

These two rules impact on the probabilities for each club.

This is the info that the bookies will be using in setting their odds.

    CELTIC

    v

    Porto.........12.2% possibility
    Chelsea.......18.2% possibility
    Madrid........11.6% possibility
    Milan ........
    Barcelona.....11.6% possibility
    Manchester....20% possibility
    Inter.........14.2% possibility
    Sevilla.......12.2% possibility

So the good news is that it's a cheap trip, the bad news is that it is Man U. Hey! Why worry? We would have progressed last year on the basis of the two meetings.

    Exciting isn't it?

Having followed closely the reforming of the Spice Girls, they will be based in the UK as they record and prepare for world tour etc. Beckham will not play in the EPL as he has vowed not to play against Manure. He would want to play in the CL and win a final trophy (or 2. Or 3.). He's the only decent player of the aforementioned. May I be the first to type:

Decent shout. Much as I don't rate Lampard, you tame him and Kalou as a goal-threat with pace aside, they can be beaten. Horrible place to go though, as you say.

While the list of potential signings above isn't inspiring, I'd back us against anyone over two-legs.

Meanwhile over in the Cup the Big Boys Forgot, Rangers will get Bolton.

Why not Malceye? I quote from the BBC website's article about the new Chelsea boss having his contract extended:

That's 16 games unbeaten in the Champions League and the self proclaimed "best league in the world". Chelsea against Naylor, Pressley, McManus & Caldwell... it's not really a dream scenario!

A so-called "battle of Britain" fixture is just what we need to raise the stakes for the players. Those defenders you have highlighted have just beaten 3 excellent teams in the group phase. With a bit more of a raised game, why not tame them in London ? By all accounts we were due to be reduced to pulp by ManUre last season. In terms of the results that didn't happen. Put it this way. Whoever we play, we will be the underdogs and the "bigger" team will have it all to lose. I also think we're more likely to achieve a result away from home against an English club than we are against continental opposition - and I include Porto in that assessment.

If CQN contributors with suitable kit and ability were to take their cameras along to games and grant CQN free licence to use their pics, I could build up a stock of photos and start to use them.

    Thoughts anyone?

NBT, from this morning, the word “Blogger” has been added before each user name, and the Blogger logo now appears beside each user name in the add comments page.

They way to add value to a business is not to stick your branding everywhere, it would suit them better to match the functionality available with pretty much every other blog system.

St John of the Cross was a brilliant poet and drew the picture of Christ crucified that inspired Salvador Dalí to paint his famous version, the Christ of St John of the Cross.

It's the St Mungo Museum in Glasgow now, but used to hang in the gallery at Kelvingrove. A local worthy slashed it in 1961 because it was a graven image and offended his sensibilities, but the work is restored magnificently and Glasgow, in spite of opposition from Spain, has managed to hold onto it.

    We are not worthy.

Celtic_First @ 10.16: agree 100%. When I was last up a couple of months ago (Dundee Utd. 3-0 weekend!), was able to take the elderly parents to see the Dali, for the first time in some years. It has, in fact, been returned to Kelvingrove which feels like its rightful home. It's splendid -- and so is the restored Kelvingrove itself.

As a child I used to go to the Kelvinside Art Gallery all the time mainly to stare for hours at the Dali painting of Christ of St John of the Cross. (that and the bee hive in the windae) I remember when the bampot slashed the painting. I believed the controversial part of the painting that got the idiots upset was is that you are looking down on Christ who is looking down on the world as if to say that you are above Christ, if that makes any sense.

I still go to Art Galleries, not as often but my favorite is Tate Modern in London, the best free entertainment in the world, the crack in the big hall cracks me up and when they had the 3 slides there, you become part of living art, ridiculous, saying that they do have a good room with Dali paintings and other good surrealists artists

I didn't know it had moved back, thanks.

I do remember requests to take it back, but the authorities felt St Mungo's would suffer greatly without its 'star player'.

The argument was that Kelvingrove needed it just as badly, which I don't particularly agree with, but I take your point that the painting does seem 'at home' there.

I've got a wee bombshell, also linked to the arts world, that I'm going to keep for the new article.

    Hi Boltonbhoy

Long time no hear from you. I was just thinking about you, wondering if St John of the Cross was a 'copa' feast day.

As you were the keeper of the list, I realised right away that you would know.

    I'm assuming it was.

As soon as I saw the mention of David Nugent, I knew you'd post. I remember what you said about watching him when he played for Bury or someone.

It's funny how things haven't worked out for him at Portsmouth. It's not as if that miss he had against Fulham was above 2.5 on the Darcheville-Van Vossen scale.

Prague was great. Brilliant food: rabbit, duck, et cetera. I was struggling to get any information about the game against Falkirk and was beginning to panic, until I stumbled upon a wee place that not only had broccoli soup, steak and chips and a cheeky wee Frankovka, but also WiFi.

That was excellent at the end of a hard day.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

We always called it the Art Galleries. The great thing I remember most of the Dali painting was that you climb up stone stairs to where it was hanging. It made the painting seem grander if that was possible, I have to agree with EU that it is one of the best paintings, I use to have it for wallpaper on my Laptop up till a year ago.

We're originally fae Paisley with Argyll links but we knew the place as the Art Galleries; plural, always.
There is something about that painting that has echoes of the city and of west of Scotland. You visit it almost like you vist an old friend. Perhaps it's the foresight of, was it Tom Honeyman, who procured it for the city ... and the audacity of a place like Glasgow, with its reputation at the time, even to imagine giving a home to an acknowledged modern masterpiece?

You'll soon be on that list as well, if you're not already for rubbing shoulders with the likes of us.

I was at a posh reception at the galleries one evening, and the staff were outstanding. I was with some people from outside Scotland and was talking to them about the Glasgow Boys.

They said, 'Well let's take a look at one of the paintings.'

We were meant to stay in the foyer area but I asked one of the women in uniform about a painting called 'Auld Wullie, a village worthy' by, if I remember rightly, a painter called Ferguson.

The museum woman says: "Aye, I know the one you mean, but we had to sell it to pay the electric."

This brought quizzical looks from the assembled group, until she said: "Och, I'm only joking, what are yes like? Come on, it's doon here, I'll put the lights on specially so yes can see it. And if it does go missing now I'll know who's responsible."

I remarked to one of the people there: "You don't get this kind of attention at the Guggenheim in Bilbao."

This was in a wee hotel near the Old Town Square. The main attraction was the WiFi, but the food and wine were great too. As SOAL says, there are hundreds of places around there.

A lot were a bit too touristy for me, but I asked in the place I was staying if they could recommend a place with good, traditional Czech food.

The place they directed me to was called: U Krkavcu, in a street near the square called Dlouha.

It was a bit dearer than most of the places in the area, but not extortionate.

It's called a wine restaurant, but the choice of wines wasn't extensive. Even so, they gave me a local Cabernet Sauvignon that was superb.

Because you didn't have time to open the wine and let it breath, they decanted it over a candle flame into a fabulous wide-bottomed decanter, gave it a great shoogle around and poured it.

I loved it. I don't know what the candle flame was all about, but Whitedoghunch will, no doubt, be able to tell us.

Plus, the food was brilliant: lots of game, a lot of pork.
