Riordan on long enough to prove a point, but not to collect all three

Derek Riordan made a rare cameo appearance as a second half substitute yesterday. He was on long enough to score, and prove what a refreshing player he can be, but not long enough to spare Celtic the indignity of dropping two points to a team who conceded five at home to Falkirk last week.

If we are to believe press reports, Derek will leave Celtic next month, but unlike Kenny Miller or Thomas Gravesen, who were despatched after arriving at Celtic Park in the summer of 2006, there will be regret among many at the departure of Riordan. The feeling that the player has not had a platform for his talents will persist.

With just over an hour played I knew Celtic were in trouble yesterday. They had plenty of the ball but had scarcely asked a question of St Mirren, who appeared happy to defend and wait on an opportunity to mount a break-away.

Their first attempt at goal, on 69 minutes, was saved comfortably by Mark Brown in the Celtic goal, but when Paul Hartley was robbed a few minutes later, Brown could only parry the ball towards the middle of his area, allowing St Mirren’s McGinn to shoot into the empty net. I blame the old board.

At this stage I could not see the equaliser coming; St Mirren were clearly not going to make a Shakhtar-esque defensive mistake, and Celtic looked incapable of crafting a goal. Derek Riordan will score better goals in his career, but his effort after 85 minutes was a sublime moment on an afternoon when play never inspired and the weather was relentlessly seasonal.

It was all about the first touch; a high cross-field pass from Sno was brought under control by Riordan with effortless brilliance, making his finish look easy.

Celtic have been insipid since that watershed moment against Shakhtar. It appears as though the emotional effort required to squeeze a third home win out of the Champions League group stage has left the tank empty.

It is time to shuffle things up; a change of style, not just personnel.

After performances like yesterday’s history can sometimes teach us a lesson. On 5 November 1966, Celtic drew 1-1 against St Mirren, who were bottom of an 18 team league.

After the game Jock Stein spoke to the Celtic View, "Many factors contributed to the disappointment of only drawing with St Mirren. One was that we did not play nearly so well as we can.

"Another was the poor control of the game.

"The team's main fault was that they allowed themselves to be upset and did not concentrate on the main objective - getting the ball in the other side's net.

"That played into the hands of our opponents.

"We must understand - and understand fully - that we shall get bad breaks in a game many more times in future but that we must take it in our stride and get on with the job of winning.

"We must also realise that a likely result of many of the matches we play will be a draw because of the type of game our opponents set out to play.

"Undoubtedly the answer to the planned, extra defence is to use every football skill and wile that we possess.

"We only lose our effectiveness if we fall for playing the type of spoiling game the other team wants to impose on us. And there is absolutely no sense in getting caught in their traps when we know the kind they are.

"I don't think that there is any argument that some of our fowards' play was plain stupid.

"Some of them have been warned in the past of the trouble that awaits them if they do not do as they are told in pre-match planning.

"Yet they persist in going their own way.

"Well, there are going to be no more warnings about this type of mistake. Real steps are going to be taken to ensure that Celtic come first and individual players come second.

"We could not blame the absence of Billy McNeill (because of a cold) for our lack success, for Tommy Gemmell acquitted himself well in an unusual defensive position for him.

"Injuries and illness have also been giving us a lot of bother recently."

The Celtic team that day was:

Simpson, Craig and O'Neill, Murdoch, Gemmell and Clark, Johnstone, McBride, Chalmers Auld and Lennox.

‘If you know you history’ you will know that it is full of incongruous results. That Celtic team of 1966 played Falkirk in their next game, winning 3-0 and finished the season as the undisputed greatest team in Europe, despite being unable to beat a truly miserable St Mirren.

I think I'll have a bet on the correct score against Falkirk on Tuesday.

Gordon Strachan is the ultimate paradox: arguably the most successful Celtic manager of my life time (I'm 30) but the football on display is poor. I don't know what to think! I want to be entertained but I can't bring myself to dislike a guy that has brought my team so much success.

Anyway, there are worse dilemas to have than considering if your extremely successful manager should be appreciated more.

One final point - To those who boo'd Sno has he came on, you are a disgrace. Go and support Rangers.

Thanks to a newly installed Sky Digital, I got to listen to the game yesterday for the first time since 19oatcake on Radio Scotland.

The bias in the commentary didn't disappoint - some things will never change.

The end result didn't disappoint (too much) - we will always have off-days.

The booing I had to listen to when E.Sno came did disappoint. It was shameful. The guilty parties should never be allowed to darken the turnstiles at Celtic Park ever again.

In the early to mid 90s, I used to go to many games, home and away, and even a couple sorties into Europe. We were dire back then, I mean truly awful, and can remember going to CP with attendances of 12,000 or so. Even in those dark days, I don't remember Celtic players having to tolerate that kind of shameful degradation.

If I were Sno, I'd put in a transfer request and give a solid single finger salute to the "fans" who must be ripping the confidence of this young lad to shreds.

    Like Lubo says - you're a disgrace.

I have made my stance on booing pretty clear recently, however i think a lot of the booing yesterday was for Jarosik coning off, as he is more of a goal threat than the big Dutchman. I also think big Evander acquitted himself well when he came on. As Lubo stated, boo a guy wearing the hoops then go follow the huns. Yesterday we were abysmal. Do we blame the manager for almost all and sundry having a stinker? Some will, no doubt. My worry is that we are in danger of losing the title, as we well know no one is going to help us this season. Not that they do any other season, but this season has shades of 2003.

If we continue with yeaterday's defence after January we will not win he league.

The whole back 4 are no more than average players who should be back up (I accept our first choice fulllbacks are out).

Fail to seriously strengthen defence wil cost us the league and Gordon Strachan his job.

On the booing yesterday I saw it as a bit of both some people being unhappy ay JJ coming off and ES coming on.
I bet if JJ was subbed for Riordan there would have been no booing.

Tuesday, unbelievably, becomes a vital game. I still can't believe we dropped points in the easiest game before we play Rangers.

I find it quite staggering to think that, but for ourselves, we could have comfortably had another league title signed, sealed and all but delivered by Xmas. As opposed to wondering if there will be any gap by the time we meet the govanites in 2008.

It really shouldn't be nip and tuck, we should have put clear daylight between ourselves and the darnel over the past 3 years - mentally and physically.

Yes results like yesterday happen, but I think the Hearts result could have been avoided. And I quietly hold a great fear that not only has Gordon Strachan stuck by JVOH without return, but that he will continue to do so. And I just feel he is not up to cutting it, in so much as he does not deliver what is expected of a Celtic striker - Goals, guile and guts.

January will be interesting, and I hope we don't get to watch Riordan coming back to haunt us with his plain and simple ability to test a goalie at any opportunity.

lets get it straight yesterday was not the fault of the fans

    Boo boys or otherwise.

Booing Sno is unacceptable but this is a poor team in need of an overhaul in mind and body.

Our failure to act in the summer is coming back but at least we can rectify it in january.

However, i am always wary of buying in jan as you normally get over priced players their team does not want. That said with our limited budget I think we should act as follows:

Punt brown replace him with the polish keeper at Dundee unt free

    Sign Murphy hibs £2 million

    Sign Carr Newcastle on loan

Sign barry robson from dundee unt as he is available at a price probably around £500,000

Sign Fletcher from hibs £2 million plus brown

Sign McFadden Everton £2 million because of tommy G as the make weight.

Let sno go on loan but do not sell him.

    Sell

Riordan (strachan wants him out) £1million

    Zurawski Whatever don't care

Balde Frees £1.5 million in wages

JVOH £2 million starting to not care

    Jarosik £2 million

Donatie £800,000 not got it act now while he still has a value.

Net spend Nil plus 800,000 and if need be keep riordan and have a net outlay of £200,000

Will it is silly season anyone got any better suggestions.

Your editorial is wide of the mark.

Jock Stein was a once in a lifetime genuis that knew how to get the best from his players.

Im afraid I dont share your optimism of Mr Strachans motivational abilities.

On another subject,Peter lawell was rightly much parised on these very pages for prising £1,000,000 from AV for the services of Shaun Maloney. If press reports are to believed, we will need to refund that fee to ensure the players return.

He wasnt worth the million pounds then and he certainly doesn't merit that spend now.

I would rather the cash was spent in more needy positions.

The sight of caldwell and hartley at full backs should be confined to the history books in a few weeks time

I think we are all agreed that our lack of spend over the last 2 years is coming back to haunt us .
Our squad is top heavy in some areas and threadbare in others , unfortunately mediocrity is redolent .

Gweedore to do as you suggested in your last post may bring an initial "bounce " but my fear is that in purchasing these players we would be adding to the mediocrity .

We need fullbacks , we need naka back and we need a striker .I think our CB`s will see us through this season as will our midfield .We must keep Rioirdan as i think to sell him and buy McFadden would simply be an exercise in spending money .

Re goalkeeper you a right re MB i don`t think he is good enough and i think that the position has been has been weakened with pure finanacial asset management .ie selling D Marshall who is much better than our current No2

My mate is an arab fan and says that "the mad monk " is top class

If parsimony pesists then we will not win the league and more importantly have allowed the huns to come back from brink .

Our current form and lack of options in the squad is really causing me concern now

    Gweedorebhoy ,

This is not a poor team. Poor teams are not Champions and later stages CL competitors.

We are on poor form and yesterday was the culmination of of 4 games in 11-12 days.

Can you not grasp that on a shoe-string budget in CL terms we are punching well above our weight?

    Can you not fathom this?

The simple fact is the success is down to the manager and his players. Who have mightily overperformed for the budget constraints we're under.

We need investment and need it soon in new players. Some quality. But to always deride a manager who is getting 300% out of some average players in downright idiotic and insulting.

Sign Barry Robson? Deriding the manager over signing poor players and you throw barry robsons name into the mixer? Shades of hypocrisy there. No disrespect to B.Robson but he shouldn't be anywhere near a Celtic jersey.

Murphy is no better than we already have but as that is very little I'd be in agreement.

McFadden and Fletcher? You point out we have mediocre players in our squad then name these two , one a flash in the pan and the other a cross between Darren Jackson and Steven Thompson?

    Donati 800,000 ?! Hasn't got it?

    It sure is Silly season.

    Smelltheglove ,

Its blindingly obvious that Gordon Strachan has magnificent motivational abilities. The mileage and performance he has managed to get out of some average players in this squad is astounding. Considering rangers were the Champions when Martin O'Neill left and what we have achieved since that day is sensational.

When the groaners finally figure this out I'm afraid it'll be too late.

I have no problems with criticisms of performances like yesterday but I'm old enough to have attended games when Big Jock was the manager and better players that we had then were equally as poor/disappointing at times just like yesterday.

Those who weren't old enough to have watched the Lisbon Lions on a weekly basis perhaps have a view of them pulverising all before them with no poor performances. That simply was not the case.

I walked away from Celtic Park often in the old days, as I did yesterday, shaking my head and saying how could we not beat a wee diidy team like St.Mirren.

Here I am now 40 years or more later saying the same thing.

I'm already over yesterday's upset, roll on Tuesday.

  • At 09/12/07 16:23, EdwardUrsus said…

PFAyr :- I think that part of the problem with keepers at both Rangers and Celtic is that they are very rarely in the game. Except when playing in Europe or on some very rare times when another Scottish team attacks the keeper is hardly in the game yet is expected to be fully alert during 90 min when he may not touch the ball. Mt opinion is that it takes a special time of mentality to be able to hold full concentration in those circumstances. In saying that I don't think M. Brown is good enough at the level you are looking for. He may have been top shot stopper but that was at a club where he would be kept in action throughout the game and judged by lower standards than he needs now.

the team looks tired, and has done for a while now. After the Milan home game the wind has gone out of our sails a wee bit.

I am not worried as we are still playing well enough to be top of the league and in last 16 of CL.

However i think Strachan has a good opportunity now to give some boys a rest. Scott Brown, Scott McDonald, McManus, Aiden all look a shade tired. We have strength in depth to give these boys two games off.

Bring in Sno, Riordan, Donati, O'Brien - see what happens. These are all players who arent guaranteed first team football and could do a great job against St Mirren, Falkirk, etc and give some of our big guys a break before CL starts up again.

Not only will that it will also (possibly) raise Riordan's value if he is indeed to go. It would put Bobo in the shop window and help GS get rid of him. It will help sno build some momentum and confidence - particularly after the booing.

If it all were to backfire - then we have rested our key players before the Cl and lets be honest - this season is all about the CL. For Celtic this season progress will be measured on performances in the last 16 and not on whether we win games over xmas.

GS - shake it up, use our squad, let our fringe players show what they can do.

    You see it as a product , I don't.

We've just reached the last 16 for a 2nd year in a row with a makeshift side (injuries , form , lack of spend) and you think things are poor?

I'm not happy at yesterdays result. Far from it. I can see why it happened. I am far from tickety-boo as regards to the current spend on the team but I hate the way the manager is held responsible for everything that goes wrong.

The management team obviously know how to sort problems out but we can't sign anyone in december. Even then its a test of our current players character to get us out of our mini-slump.

I rate Donati Highly. He isn't getting a game due to Hartley and Italians are notoriously hard settlers.

I suggest you and others who have similar views from where you sit ask for new seats out of the restricted view section and sit with the rest of us. Things look far better were we are and there's no barry robsons in sight , unless Dundee Utd come to town of course.

Paul, you drew the perfect parallel in the lead article, if anyone listens to the 'Lions' talk about winning games in the last minute, or drawing on terrible winters nights and taking big Jocks wrath as a concequence, even in the year we won every thing, realise SOME Celtic supporters live in some kind of alternate reality!!

First of all, apologies for not making it into BB's yesterday - had hoped to make an appearance but in the event couldn't make it either before or after the game.

I guess we probably all knew that our lack of full-backs was going to cost us at some point & I think the chickens have come home to roost (whatever that means) over the past few games. Whether that's down to poor planning on the part of the coaching staff & powers that be or just bad luck with injuries is a moot point - probably a combination of both.

Without a "real" full back I don't think it matters much which wing Aiden plays on. It seems clear to me that he doesn't have much confidence in the ability of either Gary Caldwell or Darren O'Dea to get beyond him & play in a decent cross, hence his increased propensity to cut inside & have a shot. The other side of this coin is that neither Caldwell or O'Dea want to get too far forward which makes it easier for the opposition to double up on Aiden - we've seen this happen repeatedly in the last 3 games.

I'd like to have seen Paul Caddis come on at half-time yesterday on the assumption that he would have been more comfortable in the role than Gary Caldwell.

When you get a performance as bad as yesterday's, however, I think you have to look at the players, rather that the Manager. I don't care who starts, who comes on as a sub or what tactics we employ - the players can do much, much better that that & so they should be looking at themselves.

On the booing debate; I felt that it was exacerbated to an extent by the fact that Jarosik was by no means the worst performer yesterday but I'm afraid that roybainestache is right - if the sub had been anyone other than Sno we would not have heard that level of booing. It's to Evander's great credit that he played so well when he came on.

Let's look on the positive side -we can now put the distraction of the CL to one side for a couple of months & look forward to Tuesday night. Big Yogi has a good footballing side who will be full of confidence but I've no doubt that our guys will be bursting to put things right.

One final point for Bryce Curdy; Bryce, I'm amazed that you could mistake El Diego Bhoy for Chennaiseabird - one of them is obviously much more intelligent, charming & sophisticated than the other. Not saying which though...

i hope GS makes some changes against falkirk, if nothing else to send out the message poor performances like that will not be tolerated they can cost titles

i feel i can confidently predict riodan will be on the bench or in the stand again for the next match. or maybe give him a go at left back? the only criteria seems to be in the clubs squad

tho with Falkirk hitting form i wonder if it will be the "tried and tested" 11 again.

Is donati headed for oblivion tommy g or until recently jarosik style?

in our team just now we have 3 players out of position every week just now, and thats contentious as hartley is to trade an attacking midfielder surely if we had a proper left winger we could get more goals. jarosik doing well enough but he doesn't create goals

DickByrne - as far as I'm concerned both ElDiegoBhoy and Chennaisabird were both thoroughly charming, sophisticated and intelligent. The people I met yesterday (thanks to NeilR for the lift) reminded me one of the reasons I support Celtic. I never like to pick favourites after a great team perfomance, but it was a particular pleasure to meet Martin42, a true gent. I await his autobiography with interest,

For those of you wondering what EDB is talking about, I'll describe a truly weird incident going to yesterday's game. It was pouring with rain and NeilR's windscreen was steaming up, and there were 3 of us in the backseat, me on the left and EDB in the middle, all a bit cramped. At one point I must have rested my knee against the electric window button but assumed wrongly that NeilR had done something to demist the car. A couple of minutes later a bus went by through a puddle splashing through the open window and completely drenching me and EDB.

You claim that Paul is "wide of the mark" in his editorial because you took it as a comparison of WGS with Big Jock as managers and, to your mind, WGS falls very far short.

I have to say that I did not read it that way. I felt the point being highlighted was that a "once in a lifetime genius" like Big Jock had days where he lost or drew to lesser teams, where players did not adapt to the tactical plan he laid out, and where the perpetual terracing moaners had the audacity to boo, criticise and write to the papers about the obvious failings of this unique genius.

But, did we boo the players then? I honestly can't remember. I know we shouted insults at individual players and laughed along when we heard them but booing???

Maybe one of our auld hands with a more reliable memory than mine own can recall if we ever booed our own players.

    BTW

I'm beginning to get worried about the absence of WG from the blog today.

We met up as part of the group that went back to BB's after the match to drown sorrows:-

GL2, TTTT and Mrs TTTT (with the secret blog name), oldtim, kitalba (came across as a guy who was genuinely jealous of our privileged position in being able to watch Celtic on a cold December day whilst he struggles with Brisbane temperatures) and smashing milk bottles (he of the psychic missus).

Well as I left BB's leaving WG as the last man standing and he was trying to negotiate a suitable sale price for the surrendering of the corner table and chairs which we had been occupying to a group of well dressed women on a night out.

I fear his absence from the blog today means he came out second best in that trade off. He's probably been bought and sold to the evangelicals by now. Anybody got a number for the ecclesiastical version of Interpol?

I can however recall punters saying that wee Wispie never tried against the huns as he really was one, which was a parcel of Tom Kite as he had a healthy scoring record against them unlike Joe McBride who never found the hun net while wearing the hoops or even wee Dixie but then again he was probably one tae :-))))

Naw booing was a hun thing, criticism of players oh aye it's the Celtic way even when we were European champs.

As a matter of interest the actual winner was Bryce but he donated his winning to our youngest member.

The day was organised as a get together for C Q N posters, but as an OMEN of what was to follow, when I scratched the ticket to see which team was the winner, that's right you can guess which team it was.

If Edward had of won he would have felt right at home, it was of course his team.

I just typed out what was probably my longest post to date, and for some unknown reason it vanished into cyberspace, did I hear someone saying "thank God".

I'll just do part of my post, with the thanking of everyone I met at BBs yesterday.
Where do I start,I suppose I could copy Noel's list, but I'll try and remember everyone that was there.
ElDiegoBhoy, who was first to enter the pub after me.A great guy,who I hope to keep in touch with through e-mail.as I say, a great guy,and thanks for the company,I was sitting at the table drinking when I heard a faint Fields of Athenry wafting through the pub, then I remembered it was my mobile that was playing the tune,it was EDB coming along the road.
I think Martin,Paul, and Kevin arrived next, then It got a bit hectic, as everyone seemed to arrive at the double after that.
In no special order, Hugh,Tony,Michael,Noel&hip flask,(martin2)WDH,NeilR,Timmy,Chris,vclxi,tttt.

I'd had an e-mail earlier in the day from Kitalba, saying he would'nt make the afternoon session, but would be there for the night shift, plesant surprise when he walked in the door.
I met Kit,and Estadio, along with WG,and son in a pub at the Haymarket in Edinburgh,we Had a good drink that night I seem to recall.
Kit fixed me up with a ticket for the Hospitality Suite in the North Stand, where I met another half dozen bhoys, who shall be forever in my thoughts,Thanks bhoys, you made what was a great day, even better.
Another few swallies were downed in hospitality,Then back to BBs for one or two more,Where Tony,GL2,John,tttt,Kit,and three who came back with us from the game.
I really enjoyed myself,Yesterday, and managed to stay compos mentis, well for most of the time.

A big thanks to everyone I met Yesterday,It's great being a Celtic supporter, when there guys like you going about.

What's the script with Riordan? That was a great finish!!

I don't understand subbing O'Dea and putting Hartley there. Granted Brown should have done much better with the shot, but situation would have been avoide if we had a natural left footed player on.

JVOH is a goner for me unless something dramtic happens and it starts to happen for him. In saying that the service into the box for the strikers is not that great at the moment.

WGS needs shake the team up. I would be tempted to put Brown
and Doanti in the middle on Tuesday. Two have got an understanding and move the ball quick.

We are getting no width at the moment. Nulify McGeady we are screwed at the moment. Teams are starting to put 2 maybe 3 on him now. We got 2 mix it up. We are to predictable.

To me this is when it becomes greater why the manager want's Shaun back. He's the sort of player that could come of the bench and give you that spark. The oppostion would then have not only have to worry about not McGeady. If they are pre occupied with him then it would open up for player like Maloney and Naka.

Looking at the bench yesterday we had nobody who could have came off and change the game. Maybe Riordan as he can do the unexpected with a shot but that's it.

Just as well January is coming because new faces is badly needed. I owuld say this is the most important Window to date for Gordon, esepecially for Jan 2nd. Time Big Ben strikes for
we got to be ready with the players especially full backs.

This has been posted on Football-Rumours.co.uk today.

"This is not a players rumour but a manager. and it is no rumour. The SFA will ask Gordon Strachan to se Scotland to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and he will accept. He is totally frustrated at the Celtic support not getting fully behind him. Scotland will not appoint a "young" manager who, if successful, will be a target for a club side and therefore Strachan fits the bill. When this happens Celtic will move for Mark McGhee and Eric Black as his number 2. Billy Davies will return to Motherwell. This from inside the McGhee camp (his family are still local in this area – cumbernauld) as Mark is best of mates with Strachan."

Doesn't seem as far fetched as the usual rubbish on that site.

    I would expect not.

It'll be against some rule/subsection which only allows Wattie to register new players in time for the OF clash.

    Hiro,

With our defence at the moment especially full back areas and the way we are playing, come Jan 2nd and we have the team the way it is then i reckon we will be struggling regardless how bad the other lot are.

Pains me to say but i could see what happened at Ibrox earlier in the season happening again.

Hiro Nakamura, I cannot argue with your assertion, as I have not read anything else from that site, but to suggest that Gordon Strachan would accept the Scotland job, which offers a fraction of the pay he is currently on, is quite a high “far fetched” standard. I can only assume that their other stories involve Elvis, the real one, not our own Steven, being the next goalkeeper for Third Lanark, now Ronnie is no longer with us.

WGS, Shaun was very much on the agenda in August and is keen to come back. A deal will be done if Martin has a replacement in place.

That blog about the manager rumour. Load of tosh!! 1. SFA missed there chance with WGS when Wattie was appointed. 2. Given the treatment he has received from the media up here would tell me that they have blown it for the SFA with regards getting WGS in charge.
    3. I believe WGS will want to see Walter off and also thinks he can take us further than the last 16 in europe.

However, with regards McGhee. I would not be the utmost suprised if WGS after he feels he has taken as far as he can recommends him for the job. Don't be suprised if Peter Grant was his assistant.

Peter Grant has got a great reputation as a coach and assistant, especially down south. The guy is very good.

Saying that i can see Dermot plucking somebody again from the Premiership. Many contacts down there. Done not to bad in his last two appointments.

Did anyone watch the Arsenal match today? Just shows that any good team can have an off day or two.Especially when key players are missing! A good result against Falkirk will restore normality.

    Paul67,

Cheers for that info. My prediction for him to return is still on course. I got a wager on this with a mate who saying it will not happen.

I heard it fell through in August due to that very fact. No replacement. Martin was supposedly in for Shaun Wright Phillips and apparently Chelsea changed their mind on the deal. Hence he pulled the plug on the Maloney deal.

Bet you Shaun is counting the days till the end of December.

Listening John Reid this morning saying we are looking to explore the japanesse market further. Well the next big thing coming on the horizon is a lad called Sato. He's a striker. Looks good.

I think we should be looking for bargains in countries like Croatia, Russia. Come Euro 2008 prices for these guy's will go up. Like to see us go Scandinavian again. Cracking Danish and Swedish talent coming through.

With players getting linked with through the media. And before you ask i don't believe everything they say. Our scouts seem be concentrating on UK shores. Cosidering the investment being made surely we got targets further a field.

When you become a Celtic supporter,The bad comes along with the good.
Theres no sense standing by your keyboards waiting on Celtic slipping up,then bombarding all and sundrie with the usual drivel.
After Yesterdays game, anyone on the park who happened to wear the hoops, was a target for the usual suspects.
I honestly believe that if the corner flags had Green and white hoops, they would have got laldy as well.

Those who started following the Celtic In the MON&GS era, have never had it so good,if your in that Catagory, you still have the bad times to come.
They will come,But later hopefully for you.

People who started supporting Celtic from 1965-74, were even more spoiled,Big Jock came up with the goods then,it was a delight to support the Celtic in those days,My only gripe was the results were very predictable, most games were over in half an hour.
Dundee United had the honour of beating the future European Champions in 67,and they done it twice 3-2,Vojvodina managed to beat us in the European Cup,the only two teams to beat us that year in all competitions.
We went into a sticky patch along the way in the later part of the 70s.
    The game runs in cycles.
I started watching Celtic in 1952,and we were'nt very good at that time,so you could say I got used to Celtic losing, and it stood me in good stead.
Maybe this is something that we as Celtic supporters should learn to accept, the occasional defeat with grace.
I was hurt when we lost two points Yesterday,It spoiled the day a bit.
But we'll still win the league.
This is not one of those downward cycles,we've still got a number of years to go, before that happens.

    Awalkacross,

Erik Edman is up for grabs. Swedish international cracking left back. Available for £1 million quid. Plays for Rennes just now.

There's a guy currently at Bolton on loan from Nantes in Wilhelmson. Not getting a game there. Probably end back at Nantes. Great player, pace to burn can play down the left as midfielder or through the centre as a striker. Guy just lost his way a bit. Bit like Henrik befoe he joined us.

I just feel we are missing out on these sort of players who are better thn what we have at present.

Glad to see we are linked with boy Lafferty today. Telling you this boy is Chris Sutton mark 2. Might help now that Owen Coyle now Burnley boss.

Would love us to go for Bedntar of Arsenal. Think Wenger will end up letting him leave, as he wants first team football. If e doe we should be there competing with the likes of Birmingham, Wigan for his signature. Would walk straight into the team ahead of JVOH.

Really disappointing game yesterday. Firstly, the fans around me were awful – if you only come to a game to swear at our players and boo others as they’re being brought on, please stay at home or move to Ibrox where you’ll fit in more. This must apply to about 1/3 of area 438. Also, why do fans now need a player to give abuse to? It was Aiden till he found this rich form, so now it has swapped to Caldwell and Sno – if this applies to you, see comment above about moving to Ibrox.

I felt throughout the game we were continually outnumbered in midfield, yet nothing was done to help us out. Throughout the 90 minutes, we tried to break them open down the flanks, yet with two centre backs playing at full back, the quality just wasn’t there (though as an aside, why did Caldwell get such stick when he was clearly better than O’Dea?).

I felt what was required was an extra man in midfield. When O’Dea was taken off, all we needed to do was switch to a 3-5-2, keeping Hartley in centre midfield with Sno and Brown, leaving Aiden and Deeks as the wide men. It was clearly what we were crying out for, but instead we allowed them to keep control of the middle, put Hartley at left back where he clearly can’t play, and chucked away points.

The Jock Stein quote is very relevant – I really think we need to be more flexible at home in games like this. They had one man up front at most for the whole game, so why would moving to a 3 at the back be any great risk, especially as we had so many centre backs on the pitch anyway?

After the farcical decision to postpone the Gretna game today, we really had to drive home the potential benefit to us, the chance to move 7 points clear. Instead, we have given Rangers a further boost – as well as getting a rest, they know they’ve now got the chance to go top.

I think rather than panic or be too hasty, we need to learn from the game. First of all, we need to buy some decent full backs in January, along with a player who can change a game – as soon as McGeady tired, I couldn’t help but feel our chance was just about gone. WGS has to learn to act more quickly – his tactics weren’t working but he stuck to it anyway, plus he left two strikers on the bench until the final 8 minutes. Why he didn’t bring on Killen for JVoH I’ll never know – if it was up to me Jan would be dropped for the next few game – he needs to realise he has to deserve his place.

All in all, a very disappointing weekend which highlights why even though it was only Gretna Rangers were supposed to be playing, it is still a huge advantage to have the game postponed. In two weeks we’ll have played 6 games compared to their 3 – yesterday highlighted the dangers of unseasonal weather and tired legs…

13-0 with three games to go. They should stuff the Jets and Miami, leaving the last game against the Giants for a 16-0 record.

The Pats are as good an all round team as I have seen. Their offence is off the scale and the defence is prety good too. Dallas might have a chance at their absolute best if Romo pulls off a few more miracle plays, but I can't see anyone else stopping them.

Got to agree with the No2 obsession after the hoops.
Some workmates went to the Wembley game. They got tickets in the draw. They had a ball.
I'm thinking of taking in a Patriot game next season if the finances are ok. Although that looks dodgy now we've got to the last 16. I didn't go to any of the champs league away games, but will probably be going to the next away game. Ciara's Mum knows what to get me for Christmas!

5 games in 15 days, since the international break.
Should we be surprised that the team looks a little, well maybe more than a little, stale?

    Arsenal and Liverpool both lost.
Coincidence that they have CL games midweek?
As do Lyon who also lost.

Like OldTim my first game was in the early 50s, and yes I do remember Celtic greats being booed, even the Lisbon Lions.
Amazingly, I saw a thread on a so called Celtic fan board this weekend heavily critical and dismissive of Billy McNeil’s abilities as a centre half and captain.

So it’s no surprise to read criticism that almost rises to the level of abuse.
Players have big egos otherwise they wouldn’t be able to perform in crucial games in front of 60k onlookers.
It seems they also need to have a skin like a rhinoceros to withstand the boos and invective aimed at them from the anonymity of the stands and the internet.

It’s at times like this that we need to earn our title as TGFITW and get behind the team and team management. We need to cut OUR side a little slack considering their efforts and achievements in the last two seasons, in particular the last two weeks.

There are enough vultures sitting on branches awaiting excuses to pick on our club without us joining them or handing them the sticks to beat us.

As Martin42 would exhort us “STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS”

    ‘GG looking forward.

1966 St Mirren result trivia - My Da remembers being at the match, Billy McNeill wasn't playing according to him, and Bobby Murdoch, who won a mankiest piece competition in my granny's kitchen in Blairbeth (he was a St Columbkille's boy with my dad) was skipper, and managed to get himself sent off.
The St Mirren scorer was a huge Celtic fan, a fella called Frank Tracey.
Another strange quirk leading up to what hopefully is three points against Falkirk.

Who'll play? Surely Riordan has got to be on from the start. It's a difficult time in the season, as Dec and Jan always tend to throw up some dodgy results for the Tic.
Fatigued players, week in, week out having to perform (or in some cases, not perform) is always going to be difficult.
Rest JVOH and hope he finds his shooting boots, let Riordan have a go, regardless of whether or not he is to be sold in Jan. (Wouldn't like to see it happen)
Maybe Skippy is a bit jaded, since he defends from the front, unlike JVOH. A lot of the workload of hassling falls on the Aussie.
Fresh legs and hunger up front from Deek might just work..
