Scott Brown back on form on nostalgic Celtic Park night

You bet that was better.

Two minutes into the game we knew Celtic were going to win, though credit must also go to Falkirk, who twice within the opening 20 minutes had chances cleared of the Celtic goal line. Gary Caldwell has clearly been watching re-runs of the St Mirren goal, as he covered the goal and blocked when Mark Brown spilled a shot from Pedro Moutinho.

Moutinho was a treat. He kept debutant Celtic left back, Ryan Conroy, on his toes and staged a few one-man attacks from the Falkirk right.

Aiden McGeady has made remarkable progress this season; Clydesdale Bank, Player of the Month for November and now the first hat trick of his professional career. Three goals from the edge of area, each a shot placed into the corner of the goal; as well as his other attributes, he is now a finisher.

Not that he would have got things underway without Scott Brown. After taking an early lead, Celtic lost momentum as Falkirk started to force them back, but Brown collected a knock-on from Gary Caldwell deep inside his own half and ran at the Falkirk left flank. It was the kind of drive Celtic needed; McGeady collected after moving in from the left and put the game beyond doubt.

Brown, Scott that is, played his best game for weeks, perhaps months. We have spoken before about the period between eight and 20 Celtic appearances, when early form often wanes, and players suffer the effects of adjustment to life as a Celtic player.

I am sure Scott has suffered from this phenomenon; let’s hope he settles over the festive period.

The crowd was as low last night as it has been for a league game in many years, but Celtic Park was vibrant nonetheless. There was a positive atmosphere, singing and goals. There was no booing and few early leavers. It reminded me of the Celtic Park of my childhood.

Tonight, our thoughts on the Champions League will take on partisan clothing, but it is interesting to take a look at those who have qualified for the last sixteen.

Fourteen clubs are already in the draw for the next round, four from England and three from Italy and Spain respectively. One from Scotland, Greece, Germany and Portugal. The final two places will go to teams from The Netherlands, Turkey, France or Scotland.

London is the only city with more than one team guaranteed to progress. It would be remarkable if Glasgow were to have more teams in the knock out stage than Germany and France combined. Remarkable, of course, does not mean desirable.

Scott Brown was certainly on his game as was Donati, who was back to winning tackles. What happened against St Mirren?

cmon chris, it was for the benefit of scottish fitba!!!! ;-)

the stadium was half full last night and the boos for evander were
evident just b4 he took the field of play, not around me i might add in section 408 north stand upper. it sounded as though it was coming from the "rangers end".
we were in 2 minds about going last night after enduring saturdays terrible display (5 of us in total usually) but as the game got nearer it was a no brainer. but something i did notice was that a lot of the moaners and whingers (a hell of a lot) were not evident. part time supporters suck, big style.
im glad we went to support our team. a great display by all who played. fair enough some are not great but at least they put in the effort which is a lot more than can be said for all the "supporters" who never bothered turning up.

and boy can that massimo ping a pass. he even makes the 10 yarders look classy. when naka is not around to make us a passing side, hes yer man. with the two of them in the team...lets just wait and see. as long as we have a tackler in there somewhere.

Although the staduim was only half full last night, i realy enjoyed the atmosphere, and very reminiscent of early eighties games. On the subject of two teams from the same city in the last 16 i will settle for Milan and London?

Bit confused by your post old Bhoy. Why would you have thought about NOT going last night because of Saturday?Personally I am MORE excited about going to a game when we have played bad/ had a bad result/ we are getting a hard time from the media etc. Don't know why, must be the adversity thing but I love it.
Agree totally with your reference to the crwod last night ( Paul touches on it also). The old quality not quantity thing, and I noticed too the ones there stayed till the end. Obviously there would be people who could not be there last night for genuine reasons, but basically what you had was the real fans there last night. And I meant what i said there; the REAL fans. You can just tell.
On the way out funny enough we were talking about it. I reckon we were about 24-28,000 last night and ofcourse it seemed pretty empty buyt I pointed out to the lads with me that only 15 years ago that was a GOOD crowd coming out of a Celtic game, and it was!But I'll tell you something, don't even TRY and compare atmospheres to then and last night.Last night indeed was living proof that we need terracing back ASAP.

I was also impressed by Moutinho.
To add to what you already said, he could also hold up play to allow the support from midfield,
has a good shot and his scoring record is not bad
Dependant on age ect could he be a decent addition to the squad for a very moderate outlay
The raw talent seems to be there
whether it can molded is another story

You are going to accuse me of bullying soon here mate!! But I need to say this; are you being sarcastic about Donati? Yes, he can pass a ball but, I'm sorry, for ever one he gets right he gets two wrong IMVHO. I have never seen a game yet where he has not given the ball away to the opposing tem for them to start an attack. Sorry pal.

Yes last night was a lot better, Aiden was brilliant (again) and as Paul said a big improvement from Scott. I was very please for the fringe players, young Ryan looked an excellent prospect, was cool headed, calm under pressure, had a bit of pace and best of all, could put in a mean cross. Look forward to seeing more of him in the future.

Who really impressed me from the fringe was the Snoman, young Evander had some excellent touches and has got that rare ability to see the pass that most cannot.

Good point as usual Paul67 about the fine tuning it takes for players to get up to speed with the club. I'm hopeful that Massimo, as well as Scott Brown can now fire on.

Interesting that Scott has been immune to the Sno treatment despite some ropey performances and arguably a more immature european performance than Sno (as evidenced by his ban). Does the difference in treatment come down to the continued preference in this part of the world we seem to have for those who run around frantically versus those with a more laboured continental approach (miller v Jarosik, Brown versus Sno or Donati).mmmm....I wonder...

The Jan thing, whilst he looked more up for it, seems soooo flat footed and lacking match sharpness. I guess it's one of those hopes that you play him into a run of form rather than react to the crowd and bring in Riordan for example, who poses questions for his cameo roles but hasn't done it for me in totality when he gets a starting line up.

RRDH - Is Hartley in there not our tackler perchance ?

Why don't we go to 3-4-3 when at home against 1 up front and a packed defence ?

    Hail hail

I am completely sick of the Boo’ers and jeerers among the Celtic support.

Before you enter a stadium you should first of all have a realistic opinion of your own foot-balling ability. Passing and running at SPL level is beyond 95% of us. Let’s face it, football is a very hard game to master and changes from week to week depending on the ball, the surface, the weather, the atmosphere, the team-mates and the tactics. Young Sno shows enormous talent if you know what to look for.

For some time now on here I have pleaded with the McGeady detractors to give him a break and now look at him. He is not a vastly improved player because of the crowds jeering, he is a vastly improved player because of, natural ability, good training and a lot of hard work from the lad himself.

Go down to your local park with a regulation size 5 ball and see just how wonderful you are at passing and shooting, (don't even think about taking a man on) and get a realistic assessment of your ability before you criticize another Celtic player.

And I am not interested in “I pay my money, so I can have an opinion” by all means have an opinion, but have a positive one. If this cap fits with you, please wear it.

If its an atmosphere problem, by all means suggest a remedy, but please do not take us back to the

    Hi Mickybhoy,

I certainly wouldn't advocate an all-standing stadium but I think what we could benefit from is a safe standing section to help generate some noise and atmosphere, and have the young uns in there like we did when we were their age (but without the obvious health and safety issues you mentioned)...They do this mixture in germany and it seems to help generate an atmosphere.

READ IT AGAIN REF ! I did so provide a remedy I said we need a terraced area? I NEVER said we need the whole darn place terraced, I said we need a TERRACED area.

    So to surmise;

THE ATMOSPHERE IS PISSSH, ITS GETTING WORSE, I AM NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS AND I PROPOSE, AS A SOLUTION, AN AREA OF TERRACING.

Now if you are still struggling with that, i WILL appeal the red.

Falkirk never played like that last night. If anything at times they were playing 3 up (yes 3) which there man in the middle dropping back into midfield when needed.

I think the big difference between Saturday and last night was the way Flakirk tried to play instead of St Mirren just packing the defence.

Anyway glad to give a team a good humping and get back on track.

Wasn't at the game last night as I had a Christmas night out but just watched the highlights on You Tube (Celtic v Falkirk Dec 2007) and McGeady looked like he was unstoppable - he's added so much to his game. It's not just the extra burst of pace but he's stronger, fitter and his finishing has improved. From the highlights alone he set up about 5 excellent goal-scoring opportunities through long balls and crosses. We have a world-class player on our hands!

Brown looked excellent as well - Using the two of them down on the wing should be a trick that is repeated - they ripped Falkirk to threads!

    Hi big Wavy
I once went to the safe standing enclosure area at ibrox and was treated to a steaming hot bovril shower from the sporting chaps in the upper stand
but joking aside, I know that seated areas are easier to police that standing areas and that is why they have tried the family section. The german experiment would be well worth a look and thing some of the premiership would welcome this ,especially if the entrance price was lowered
    accordingly.
Also agree on your point re SB and big E Sno
Maloney (unlucky wee man)also received an easy ride
    while Thommo was verbally abused
    constantly

Can anyone explain the complexity of the last 16 draw, should the Darnel get through?

We could feasibly get Inter and they could get AC, meaning we would both be travelling to the same city at the same time. The same could be said if we got Chelsea and Arsenal respectively.

There is also the problem that we could have two sets of away fans travelling to our city.

My thinking is that they would need to change one of us to an away game first, which i think would suit us, but does anyone else know the actual facts?

Reading a few comments that basically the folk not there last night where not real fans.... makes me sad.

I have also just been informed by a source whom I trust (texted me the team line up for milan in the san siro in march and against the huns as soon as he knew, ie after the manager had told him) that a certain ukranian will be joining on half a seasons loan in january.

The atmosphere question very difficult to answer but very different on european nights.
For eg,I used to hate going to Livvie with they mad drummers banging my ears off and I believe the fod have a band to try and raise some atmosphere.mmmmmmmmm
Most of the good songs have been binned due to being non suitable

I would rather we had 40,000 every week rather than 60,000 as the 20,000 or so (maybe not as much) are all part timers and prob havent been going that long.
BOO BOO BOO BOO, some people just love to boo

guy behind me had a right go at venegoor for not moving onto a pass, and i mean a RIGHT go

i just was in so much of a downer after such a poor showing.
MON has a lot to answer for, bringing back the glory days, the cheek of it.
me going to the game last night was never in any doubt (my wife said) after i got home.
the st. mirren game just left such a negative imprint in my tiny mind. a few games have
recently thats why ive resisted posting recently due to negative vibes. i dont enjoy posting when
in that frame of mind. its ok now as i think the st. mirren game could have been just what
was needed to snap everyone out of it.
i never bring the media into my celtic thoughts...scum every last one of them.
i stopped listening/reading most of it a long while back.
agree re the terracing though, bring back the jungle i say.
the next home game v. hibs will be full quota as well with us garnering an un-asailable lead
    over satans hoardes.
it could be a bit rough though, the 22nd?
im sure thats the day after many a xmas work nite out.
a midfield of naka donati brown mcgeady is a mouthwatering prospect, maybe Jvoh will get
a supply route off that quartet. come to think of it...
the jan venegoor of hesselink quartet, now theres a moniker.
i think, and ive not been enjoying his displays of late, hes pretty unlucky isnt he.
last night for instance, handball on the line from his header, scott browns (i think) shot coming
back off the bar and squaffing past him as hes sticking out everything to try and reach the ball (ooeerr mrs) the ball just being a hairs breadth behind him as it went to mcgeady for the second. the referee (if i can call him that the $%£^&*) determined to book him from the word go depsite being bundled all over the place and
i reckon he won about 90% of his flick ons and arial duels last nite.
its gonna click at some point, january 2nd will do for me.
jvoh skippy mcgeady hatricks all round 9-0

What needs to change is not so much the physical nature of the Stadium[ standing areas are not coming back any time soon] but the nature of the support. The supporters are less patient because people in general are less patient.People you work with, share the roads with, queue up in shops with, are less patient, less forgiving of errors.

Further evidence that modern life is..rubbish.

Oh, minor paradox is standing at the back, frantically waving its hand. Smallest crowd of the season- diddycup v Hearts. So perhaps the 20,000+ who turned up that night are the'most-committed' Tims. And when was the booing of ESno loudest- the diddyCup game v Hearts.

Please stop the self-congratulating for going to the game lastnight. Its official, you are clearly much better and bigger fans than those of us who didn’t go. Its as if you pine for a game where the attendance is low so that you can blow your trumpet to the tune of “I was there, where were you ?” Descriptions of “real supporters” and derogatory comments about “part-time supporters” and ‘”supporters”’. I could make many excuses for not going lastnight but it all boils down to this - I couldn’t be bothered.

Crisis, I’ve been outed, I’m not a true fan, I’m a moaner, a whinger. What should I do? Should I give up my season ticket ? If not then stop patting yourself on the backs. I purchase the season ticket, I make the choices. And get this, the club relies as much upon the 25,000 season ticket holders who didn’t go lastnight as it does upon those who did attend. And at a time when season ticket sales for next season are likely to fall (call it a hunch), the last thing required is sanctimonious individuals telling those who didn’t go lastnight, not to bother in the future.

Jock, I think for the group stage draw they split the qualifiers into two separate draws, in effect, which ensured that the likes of Inter & AC Milan, Celtic & Rangers, Arsenal & Chelsea, Liverpool & Man Utd, and others were kept in different "halves" of the draw. Hence our games always being on a different day to Rangers' games, and likewise for all those other "paired teams".

It is likely that a similar system will be used for the last 16 draw.

So by the time Celtic's name is drawn out, we will probably have only 3 or 4 possible opponents, as they'll have to come out of our side of the "local pairings equation".

Talking of CL here is something i found interesting

We alwasy talk of our away form and inability to get any points away

look at this years CL qualifiers

    Group A

Besiktas could of won last night and qualified with 9 points

    Group B

    Shalke qualified with 8 points

    Group C

Real and olimpiakos would both of qualified with a draw last night, the would of both qualified with 9 points

    Group D

    we qualified with 9 points

    Group E

Rangers can qualify with 8 points

    Group G

Fernabach could potentially qualify with 8 or 9 points

Look at how many teams can or have qualified without potentially needing a point away

My point Home form is the key don't worry so much about away 9 from 9 at home seems generally to be enough

the dynamic in the CL seems to be changing, i.e. its more competitive and winning the home games is hard enough never mind the away.........ask valencia

He would be cup-tied for CL games, and he also plays better for Chelsea in CL games. They of course, being still in it!

Interesting contrasting opinions on Massimo today. Having watched both Brown and Donati all season I'd say Brown gives it away as much, if not more - how often does a barnstorming Brown run actually end in a product?

I'm a massive fan of Brown, delighted we signed him and really look forward to watching him in the Hoops but his final ball and decision making needs to improve. I'm still impressed by Donati in flashes and more and more he reminds me of Nakamura at a similar stage in his Celtic career.

Both are in my Celtic Park starting XI, away from home there are times when Donati can be limited - just as Nakamura was.

At this point a few more people backed me up and challanged the boy.

We got to ask these people why they do it...i've had enough, i've seen far worse players than Sno through the years but i dont think i've seen a braver player than him, for a young guy to put up with that abuse and still have the bottle not to hide gets him my vote anytime.

My understanding of the last 16 draw, is that teams that finish 1st in their group will play away first, either Tue or Wed. As both ourselves and the Darnel would have finished 2nd we would play Home first either Tue or wed the same week, causing problems with travelling support etc, not to mention if we are in the same city?

  • At 12/12/07 14:45, BigChipSuk said…

    Antsman, alternatively:

    Group A
A Besiktas win and Marseille v Liverpool draw would have seen Liverpool qualify with 8 points.

    Group B
    Schalke qualified with 8 points.

    Group C
If Real had lost by the odd goal to Lazio and Bremen had beaten Olympiakos, Real would have qualified with 8 points.

    Group D
    Celtic qualified with 9 points.
(But if Celtic hadn't scored in the last minute against Shakhtar, the Ukrainians would have qualified with 7 points.)

    Group E
Rangers can qualify with 8 points.

    Group F
Roma have already qualified with 10 points.

    Group G
Fenerbahce could qualify with 8 points if they lose to CSKA Moscow and PSV don't beat Inter Milan.

    Group H
Arsenal have already qualified with 10 points.

Thus it is not inconceivable that three quarters of the CL groups could have seen the runners-up qualifying for the last 16 with less than 9 points. Equally though, should both PSV and Fenerbahce win tonight, PSV would go out with 10 points!

So while 9 points should be enough to see a team through, it is not necessarily so, and to guarantee progress teams should aim to win all their home games and at least one of their away games. Any less relies on favourable results elsewhere... Just ask the Celtic Bhoys.

Alas, should Rangers prevail tonight in their "must not lose" match (their favourite type!) against Lyon, then perhaps this will further emphasise the English media's rights to talk their teams up... as England will be the only country other than Scotland to have had more than one team in the Champions League group stage and achieved a 100% qualification rate!

Does this mean that if Rangers qualify tonight with a draw, they would be privvy to qualifying for the last 16 with the lowest points total? 7 & 8 respectively? Surely a case for negative (anti) football. Can we then expect a 5-5-0 formation tonight?

  • At 12/12/07 15:00, BigChipSuk said…

Indeed Bigjock, Celtic & Rangers would be playing home games on consecutive nights. As the visiting support for each match would number in the hundreds, many of whom would be flying out of the country the next morning, there is no great reason why there should be a problem.

In the event that a significant number of visiting supporters chose to hang around Glasgow for a few extra days, and went seeking trouble with the other set of visiting supporters (which is unlikely, as most visiting supporters are fairly civilised), then I am sure Glasgow's finest would deal with any situation that arose in their usual fair handed way. ;o)

We might have greater cause for concern should Celtic be drawn against Inter Milan and Rangers against AC Milan, with 10,000 of them visiting Milan at the same time as 20,000 of us, and 80% of that lot being out of their skulls for most of their time in Milan.

In which case, perhaps Celtic could offer to put their away game back a week (as we had to play our last CL game a week early)... which would then guarantee that we became the first Scottish team ever to qualify for the last 9 of the Champions League twice!

And in order to avoid any potential problems at the home games, Rangers could offer to play their home game in Lyon, as they seem to perform much more effectively there!

Mind you, they have yet to qualify...

this seems like an appropriate time to repeat my post at 13.35. Thus,

"Please stop the self-congratulating for going to the game lastnight.

And at a time when season ticket sales for next season are likely to fall (call it a hunch), the last thing required is sanctimonious individuals telling those who didn’t go lastnight, not to bother in the future"

Edward, well done with the stats, you are spot on!

However, you miss the important facts:

Celtic are the Scottish Champions. Rangers are not.

Celtic are in the last 16 of the Champions League. Rangers are not.

Celtic are top of the SPL. Rangers are not.

Admittedly, one of those statements may change in the next few hours; another in the next couple of weeks; and all three by the end of the season... but I'll revel in the glory of the present.

Oh, and good luck for tonight. It's one of those games that I will be following with a degree of indifference, in that I want Rangers to progress "for the good of Scottish football", but at the same time I want them to be unceremoniously humped.

That said, from a selfish Celtic-minded point of view, I suppose the ideal scenario would be that at Ibrox Rangers outdo Lyon by 24-4 on shots at goal and 14-2 on corners, whilst dominating possession by 62% to 38%, and Lyon win 3-0. Then Rangers go all the way to the semi finals of the UEFA Cup winning every game, home and away, right up to the second leg of the SF, where they lose, eventually going out on penalties...

Just think how many UEFA coefficient points Rangers would thus accrue "for the good of Scottish football"!

    :o)

WeeMinger, at the end of the day its up to us all as individuals what we do. Its no-one elses business.I do believe, however, that last nights crowd was , in numerical terms, embarassing. The worst ever since the new Celtic park was built. That concerns me thus the level of "anger" I feel not only at those who kept away but at those very same people now trying to convince me that their decision to NOT support the team was okay. Yes you can chose to stay away, but for me that makes you questionable as a real fan.

Or, again, I repeat, would you have been there if it were Milan or Rangers? If the answer is yes, and it undoubtedly would be, then that doesn't impress me.

I understand I am being a little controversial here, but its the way I feel after the ridiculous attendance last night, which will be picked up on by others and rightly so.

It was a PATHETIC show of support.PATHETIC.

We get praised together, we get awarded together and last night we let the Club down together.

Agree with most of what was in the opening article (bet that pleases Paul no end) BUT Scott Brown ...Deary me.

Apart from a few cameos and an obvious potential, Scott has not dominated a game from midfield in the way that I would expect our number 1 target to do.

Last night when he was on the right he rarely either got in front or even in an advanced square position of GC. Gc was forced to play the ball behind himself, thus slowing down the attack, or play the long pass down the wing for Scott McD to run on to.

He did that very well, but since SB offered no alternative option of a one two or even a pass guaranteed to go forward while still retaining possession and preserving Scott M’s energy for shorter sprints, I don’t think he contributed anything like the impact that some on here would have us believe.

In fact, SB was as usual noticeable by his absence for most of the game, but came onto a more influencial role when Falkirk were reduced to 10 men

The above opinion must be viewed in the light of the facts that I think that Evander is a footballer (couple of wee turns from him were a delight if fruitlkess) who will mature quickly into a great Celtic assett (if the crowd give him time) and JVOH is being harshly treated, although I also think he is destined to never ever score again.

A McG was outstanding again and in the age old cliche and truth - is worth paying the entrance fee to see. – did you see all the kids trying the McGeady turns at half time.

Now if we get a Shaun back, not just as a valid first pick to challenge Naka, Scott B, and Aiden but also as potential cover for Skippy up front, I think the competition will spur us on to a healthy future.

The obvious things still need sorted.

Although Ryan C showed a lot of composure last night as a linking attacking and overlapping full back, we still need more solidity wide of the middle defence.

Elvis and Mick get pulled out of position when the full backs are beaten and don't deal with pace very well. The return of MW, JPPD, and LN may address that.

Rangers are built to bully Celtic this season. So far they've done that. Don't know thge answer to that one, other than to play them off the pitch.

Motherwell done it, Dundee utd done it, Hearts done it, even Inverness done it for large portions of the game. So maybe we should stick to GS's vision and keep the ball on the deck and passing to feet.

Apart from one flap from Mark Brown last night, I thought he played quite well.

Just to end wae a wee bit of controversy – there is a big huge bit of me that wants Lyon to wipe the pitch with Rangers tonight, but there is a wee streak that says it would be a right GIRUY to the press south of the border, UEFA, and the likes of Marcotti to realise that their prescious leagues and stars are not light years ahead of a our small and irritating nation.

Mind you, I thik the big biased bit will win out once the folk music starts.

For all you havin a go at Neverbeten, I suggest you look at his qualifier that referred to those without a reasonable excuse .

Everyone will probably look at their own 'reason' and say that it was perfectly reasonable, but if you look at those who were there last night there will have been many who had bigger barriers or different priorities.

There are few ways of determining the quality of a supporter but attendance against the odds is undoubtedly one of them.

Nothing abot your attendance makes you a good or bad person, nor does it kake you a bad supporter or good supporter, it just differentiates you in terms of others who ignored similar circumstances.

As for 'let no man judge, lest he be judged...'; nearly every post on this site contains an opinion, some of them scurrilous and even insulting to players, supporters and management.

Remove the judgementalism and you remove the core of the site's input.

ps I missed Hearts and Falkirk, nae ticket but did get to Switzerland, Peterborough London, Newcastle and the States as well as Moscow, but not Donetsk.

All other games - present and correct sir!

    Go, Yer Sel'.... pal!

    Thou artst a worthy man!

I am in full concurrence, with your sentiments..re. the "Holier than Thou" approach, of many of our esteemed Brethern... who are, with us, Mutually PRIVILAGED, to inhabit this isolated Celtic refuge.

To those, I propound the following advice...

Nevah Judge!.... lestest ye be,as wellest!

In a past dictum....I have tried to advise as you have, Mike...malheuresment...my pleas have obviously fallen on deaf ears.

People! Ye canny control da WOILD!

If Thouest Dinnaeest Booest....... be satisfied....

Dinnae attempt to enforce your dictums( A fine wan tae talk!...ed)( Quiet! Ah'm oan a roll!) of what is right and proper... on others!

Everyone, has the same right to display APPROBATION!( I didn't know that!....are you sure it's legal?...ed)(Don't worry pal... you will nevah receive it, from me!...you are quite safe!)

Under the Goose and the Gander corollary.... Everyone, is therefore ALSO entitled ,to display their DISAPPROBATION, whenever in their opinion...it is WARRANTED!(Whit a Fickle, BUNCH!...ed)( Ain't dat da Trut'!)

Mr. Sno earned his Fan Disapproval... the fair and honest way.....
    HE EARNED IT!

Now, that he has IMPROVED his form to a more acceptable degree... He shall no longer be a target for Fan abuse...( Do YOU MEAN TO TELL ME,THAT... THERE IS SUCH A THING AS CAUSE AND EFFECT?....ed)( I AM AFRAID THAT ...THAT IS A FACT!)

    If and I say...IF....

Mr. Sno maintains his re-newed approach to the game...... as he seems to have done...in the last TWO GAMES..... then...

Bob and Fanny... are suddenly promoted to your family tree!

    On a related subject...

Nevah, be so short sighted as to Promulgate the idea that a SMALLER CROWD at Celtic Games!

The idea being ,that REDUCED ATTENDANCE...would somehow, STRAIN the Boo BHOYS, from the Pottage!
Thereby, leading to an ALL ROUND Improvement in Fan approval!

    No... NO WAY!...NOT NEVER!

Should this Nonsensical Suggestion ever come to pass....
that is... a REDUCTION, in the number of Spectators at CELTIC matches....then...

Please be willing to live the rest of your life... SANS Proboscis!

The object of any Enterprise, in the ENTERTAINMENT ARENA ...is thus...

Always aim to put the MAXIMUM NUMBAH... of MAXIMI GLUTEI..... IN THE SEATS...PERIOD!

    So THERE!

Awesome result last night given the previous 3 results. Hopefully the ship has been steadied as we set sail for a glorious 3 in a row.

Sheva for Celtic is surely the funniest pre transfer window rumour so far, with the King Henrik one not far behind. Although I would love to get both these players, I have lurked on CQN for the past 2 or 3 windows (right up till the deadline once wih Paul67 still hmmmmming his way all the way till 11.30 before admitting defeat). I am refusing to get involved this transfer window and would advise anyone new to the site to do the same - it'll all end in tears.

So can I officially be the first CQNER to start the Robbie Keane rumour for this January 2008 window.

Although when it comes to booing what yer meant to be supporting... I'm not a fan of it at all. Never understood it, and never will! Don't think that 'cos I don't boo, that I'm not satisfied either!

Positive feedback! Have ye never heard of that? I'm sure ye have! Much more likely to have a positive effect than negativity does. I remember a fellow band member would jump down anyones throat if they made a bummer on stage. The result of that was even more mistakes, because of nervous worrying about NOT making mistakes, therefore performance suffers big time.

Although quite how you're supposed to show positive feedback at a football match is beyond me. Or is it?

I was always told when I was young, that if you haven't got anything civil to say to anyone, don't say anything at all. Targetting a 20 year-old before he comes on the pitch is as bad as the huns when they boo... well they boo anything with a pulse, don't they? It's their way!

I'm also quite certain that it's a topic we're destined never to agree on.

    109 steps...

    On the subject of Moaners,

It is everybody’s right to moan; I do it, and everybody else does it; however, having a go at a player who is actually playing well, and then dares to make one bad pass, is the mark of a classic “moany git”; someone who is ready to have a go at an individual, no matter the circumstances.

This is prejudice, pure and simple. We have all had to endure the “moany git” who is happy to be cursing the team at 0-0, no matter how well they are playing, whereas it is OK for misplaced passes or wrong decisions to be made at 2-0 or 3-0 up (that’s something I’ve never understood, and never will), unless, of course, it is that particular player that they were just dying to have a go at. The most recent one, which was quite laughable, was the ball played by Evander Sno for Derek Riordan’s goal on Saturday; you could hear the “moany gits” having a go big time on the ball played, and within 3 seconds were shut up when they realised it was a great pass; I almost felt they were upset it turned out as it did, as they were denied an opportunity to denigrate a player they don’t see as being Celtic class – utter nonsense of course.

I do believe that the Moan of the Match Award should definitely be a regular fixture on CQN. Anyone who feels they are so fed up they can’t take this sort of stuff can maybe find the best answer to this sort of “support” – humour.

“Always look on the bright side of life, doo, doo, dee, doo, dee, doo! “ :-)

What I did say was that almost every post on this site was judgemental in one way or another.

That is what I judge to be the truth based on the evidence of my reading.

If however you are gauging the word in terms of non-evidential conclusion, there are loads of them as well.

The occasional polite but logical discourse is rare although not totally absent.

As far as I'm concerned anyway, the more repartie, acid rejoinders, and opinionated blasphemy (without the sweary words of course), the better.

    Kojo,

Got to go on a bit of French leave!!

But, as far as Aiden goes you are so incorrect as to make incorrect seem almost right.

Aiden blossomed because the vast majority of Celtic Fans believed in his skill and his potential. Aiden blossomed because he is an outstanding player with a strong community and a almost certainly a strong family behind him. Aiden blossomed because Gordon Strachan and the coaching staff, suppotrted encouraged and at times cajoled him. They believed in the Celtic way.

Aiden blossomed despite the 'boo boys' and not because of them.

Evander may be the next one to prove that the above is true. Hopefully Scott brown will also benefit from all that, or does your theory mean that we have to start booing him before he makes a £4.5 million contribution.

    Tell you what.

Let's get rid of coaches and managers and just boo everyone on the pitch until they start winning, or let them disintegrate.

That's the law of the jungle (not the law of THE JUNGLE)

I chose to stay away last night...
    I live in London...
I've supported Celtic for well over 40 years...
Does that make you a REAL Celtic supporter and me less so?

Christmas is just around the corner. Given the straight choice between AC Milan last week and Falkirk this week... What would you choose?

The game last night was rearranged from a weekend when it is easier for a lot of people to attend...
You are not being controversial at all... Just guilty of talking rot!

Judge not lest ye be judged, I think the big man said...

YOU EVIDENTLY DID NOT READ MY FIRST ENTRY MATE. I UNDERSTAND SOME WOULD HAVE GENUINE REASONS FOR NOT BEING THERE.
BUT LETS BE CLEAR ABOUT THIS; LAST NIGHT WAS NOT A ONE OFF. IT WASN'T UNIMPORTANT. WE HAVE PLAYED AGAINST FALKIRK BEFORE. WE NEEDED THE THREE POINTS. IT WAS AN OFFICIAL SPL MATCH. ITS NOT XMAS EVE. THE WEATHER WAS FINE. THE MATCH WAS IMPORTANT.
And the crowd was the lowest ever attendance for a Celtic match at home.

What Im saying is this was a first, and not a first that I wanted associated with Celtic. I cannot tell people to go to watch Celtic. No-one can. But for me things are changing too much and , sorry, i don't like it.As silly and whatever that it sounds, I think alot of fans could have made a little more effort last night. I think their non-attendance and their lack of effort let the Club and the players down. I really do. This is not the Celtic support to me of old. I remeber playing Partick on a FRIDAY night around 1997/8, Rangers having won the League that week and the place was packed with over 45,000 ( the Celtic End was being built).

I don't want to fall out with any Celtic man here, but wee things like this make me feel they have the upper hand. I want THEM to be the ones who have 28,ooo at a home game, not us.And remember we got three massive points last night. The team needed us, thats what its all about at the end of the day.

Yeah, you can pick and choose, no-one can stop you but if thats the way its going to be from now on then I'm saddened. And angry. I'm angry that if we have to play at Tannadice or Fir Park again, or reach another European Final then the ones who stayed away will be back claiming this and that and you and me won't get a ticket again... ( smiley face)

let me stop there but repeat. Last nights attendance was a disgrace and embarassing.

    Major quandary.
    Rangers game on ESPN.
    To watch or not?
I usually give their games a swift bodyswerve.
However, as I was at home for the Stuttgart game a few weeks ago, I did watch them being beaten and thoroughly enjoyed the result, if not the game. Ask my son's neighbours about the noise when Stuttgart hit the winner.

So do I work at my desk or watch the game unfold with all its twists and turns? Potential highs and lows?
Do I risk my 100 per cent record of Rangers losing when I watch?
Or do I put my record on the line for the cause?

    I'll decide in 30 minutes.

PS I am backing improving Scotland's standing in Europe by raising the coefficient.

Rangers to fall into the UEFA cup.

For what it's worth I think the debate on last nights attendance and the merit of those fans who went against those that did not is being taken 2 far by some of us on this site.
Ed the Ted, good luck 2nite btw, mentioned in an earlier post a few days ago about someone being addicted 2 celtic. I suspect it was said in jest nonetheless I reflected on this and came 2 the conclusion that , yes, for some, supporting celtic is an addiction and can have the same negative effects as can other addictions. I know personally a couple of supporters who have told me that their desire 2 put Celtic b4 everything else has cost them their marriages.
It is only a game m8 and we all support in our own way.

Until we were 2 up this moron continued to scream abuse. I didn't hear any booing of Sno and I was straining to hear it. My relief, though evaporated when the boy hesitated once (howls of outrage) and misdirected one pass (screams of indignant disbelief). When he took the ball in the area, controlled it beautifully then sent a great shot goalwards I could almost taste the disappointment in the air.
On a nicer topic, the tiny wee bhoys who were playing at half time were absolutely brilliant.

Its great to watch the CL without a care, sitting with feet up watching the destinations being decided.

Ive got a feeling it will be Inter. At least we would be in the other end of the San Siro. Most fholk will be on 1st name terms with hotel and bar personnel.

Been on Milano underground more times than the Glasgow middle earth train.

If it is and since Celtic have been there so often I think UEFA should move the away game to somewhere neutral. No idea where though...

Madrid would be good, but does anyone else think a trip to the home of the Spanish royal team might be a bit dodgy?

After the Aberdeen carry on and the incontenents trip to Catalyuna it might not be very welcoming.

They wouldnt be too keen on McGeadinhos tribute to Jinkys 67 performance either.

Also the Bernabau always looks full for CL games, apparently a lot of Madrid supporters from elsewhere in Spain save their Madrid trips for CL games.

You never gave me that impression, so no problems there. I still agree with 109 Steps P.O.V though. People improve in spite of the boo-boys, not because of it.

You have a point about the survival of the fittest theory, but I can't see that applying to 20-y-o footballers though.. Especially ones who are not playingparticularly badly, but for some reason the boo-boys elect them to be boo-flavour of the month.

I'll tell you what the Darwinian theory does though... Certain talented players could just get the proverbial hump, decide that they don't need that sort of nonsense and go elsehere and thrive. All becuse the boo-boys don't know a good player when they see one.

The boo-boys have got to learn that the game is evolving, and we've got to evolve with it... We can't play kick & rush all the time. Now there's Darwinian for you!

If there is any consistency in the press, then WS should be fearing an absolute mauling tomorrow...

    1. 7 points from first three games- yet still not qualify?

    2. 1 point required from last home game- yet still not qualify?

    3. 1 point required, and a weekend off beforehand- and still not qualify?

    4. Boyd, Gow, Naismith- you signed them, where were they?

None of this will happen. Walter is the most well connected coach in Scotland, he has friends all over the media. He will be protected.

The truth, however- as the poster on FF quoted above realises- is out there.

What a player that Benzema is, hes got everything and he's still only 19.

Wudnt mind going back to Milan for the next round, it was great craic there last week and it shouldnt be a problem getting tickets for the next round.

    Maccabi Haifa
    Partisan Belgrade
    Hapoel Tel-Aviv
    Osasuna
    Anorthosis Famagusta
    Artmedia Bratislava
    Maritimo Funchal

What a great evening's entertainment. I was watching Sky and listening to the Huns on Radio Scotland for maximum effect.

The numpty's on the radio even managed to bring the inability of Derek Riorden to get a game in to the conversation.

On another note, I went along last night and wasn't too impressed by the atmosphere at all. It was no better or worse than a normal Saturday.

For those who would prefer 30k fans at every game, consider this: 30,000 season books at an average price of, say, £450 translates in to £13.5m of lost revenue and would wipe out our profitability.

Be careful what you wish for.

LOL!! The Scottish media tip-toeing around Wattie at the press conference as we speak.

Richard Gordon now bring up our game against St Mirren. I give up.

Margins are thin at this level.

If Donati hadn't scored in the last minute of injury time, with the last kick of the ball by a Celtic player, we would have finished fourth.

If Darcheville hadn't hit the bar from 2.5 yards, a chance he would score 999 times out of 1,000, then Rangers would have been 10 minutes away from finishing second.

    Poor form mate.

I don't know you and can only argue with your opinions. I can't have a personal dislike of someone I don't know though there was an old aphorism that said taking an instant dislike saves time. That's a joke, BTW.

Your passive aggressive response is unworthy. You put an opinion out there. I disagreed. This is the second time you've accused me of personal spite. Your first attempt was based on a blatant misreading of a post of mine that was not aimed at you. I explained this but got no apology for the attack and accusation you made. You posted later that apologies are a sign of weakness.

And, to be honest, I'm not really sure enough about when you're at the wind up and when you're being honest, even with this complaining post.

The idea that you or I or any other poster here are free from the vices of sarcasm, personal attack, stifling opinion or being patronising, is simply deluded.

Try reading what is written, please, before you respond to some imagined attempt to stifle you.

And, for the record, we've had non-rancorous exchanges about your transfer rumours in the past but, on many other issues, we disagree, but then, in my opinion, half the time you disagree with yourself, sometimes in the same post.

Ach, this is too fine a night to waste on any more of this.

    So Rankers are oot!

    Who cares?

If they win their games in hand they will be above us in the SPL.

Falkirk came to play football and we won - at least 6 of the others will do a 'St Mirren' - a hard task for our shape.

For the first time in years this league will go down to 'head to head' - I ask this (despite tonight) - how confident can we be against them?

I believe we have the better technical players but I still worry that 'the cardigan' has built a lumpebn machine which (with the support of TMB) will have aclean sweep this season and those of you who know me will appreciate how hard it is for me to say this.

We seriously need to win at CP against them.

This weeks CL was supposed to be an anti-climax, Celtic having played and qualified already. Rangers certainly changed that tonight!

Really glad that Seville won their group- so that we can avoid Arsenal and the dream of a return to that beautiful city lives on.

A lot of CQN'ers seem to prefer a draw against Porto- I am very wary of the same. I would prefer Seville (nostalgic), Real Madrid (Novelty) or Chelsea (If the African CON affects them at that stage).

Great to lisen to Souness tonight on Sky. He claims that Rangers were in the toughest group of all- only a couple of weeks ago we heard how lyon are not the force they were, Stuttgart are languishing in the lower regions of the bundesliga etc. Also great to see the glum faces of White and McAllister.

I also find it dumbfounding how RTE can show the Rangers game tonight whilst not doing likewise for the Celtic game last week, considering the implications of BOTH games.

Finally, I feel that there is so much more pressure on Celtic when they play in the CL on a weds after a good hun result the previous evening. I think this extra pressure certainly contributed to the downfall of Rangers this evening whereas Celtic stepped up to the plate each time this year!! A sign of stregth of mind?

Why o why the weeks wait for the draw??

And sign that benzama kid up, or at least buy him a drink!!

    From FF-

    " maccloyalist I-

would love to know what WS has been doing in training - Gross negligence
for the past week or so? As many suspected, there would never be a plan B tonight if things went wrong, only more of the same pre-historic tactics and long balls.

If there was a football court, Walter Smith and McCoist would be up for gross negligence tonight, as despite having many days to come up with various plans for tonight (depending on how the game was going), they chose not to or were incapable and maybe didn't even try to.

Walter Smith has failed each and everyone of us again tonight.

    Vidmar -

I think you'll find the players needed a rest on Sunday.

An utter shambles from all involved. Smith has stolen his £1.5m p/a tonight.

    Rod the Prod -

    Gross negligence
    11 days and we didn't have a plan A, never mind a plan B.

    naismith -

Whats beyond me is darch warms up for 20 mins then he is stood standing with mccoist /mcdowall and his board and pen drawing pictures for another 15 minutes telling him what to do before getting on.....

    TOTAL FARCICAL

no wonder we have players with injuries!!!!!!!!!!

    The Rubber Mallet -=

Tonight showed him and his tactics for what they are.....from the dark ages. We watched it in the mid 90's and it's happening all over again. I've said it a thousand times, we haven't and won't progress with him as manager.

Smith's handling of Rangers has been shambolic all season. Poor signings coupled with a refusal to use our squad to it's fullest left us not only devoid of ideas but in the nightmare position of having 7 unfit subs on the bench who at best lacked sharpness and at worst were still carrying injuries.

Tonight's game was made for Thomas Buffel, if only as a bench player to make an impact in the 2nd half. The fact that he wasnt involved against Killie, we cancelled the Gretna game and had Amdy ****ing Faye on the bench tonight tells you everything you could possibly need to know about Smith's use of a football squad and dealings in the transfer market.

How often have they been gifted the advantage of a home game whether it be the final game of the CL group stages or a 2 leg Euro match, only to see them blow it big style. After Auxerre, Victoria Principal, was there really any doubt about tonight's outcome ? Some major Euro cities will be letting out a big sigh of relief ! Now its Uefa Cup, and the disappointment of the hordes will inevitably move away from benign p"%&ing in the streets to something uglier

A lot very critical of Smith, pointing out that 1 out of 12 points in 4 CL games is a choke of the first order. Strange that the media will protect him from his own fans...

Hopefully they go far in EUFA and hand Celts the league, no more postponements, and you Celts have a problem wtrh St. Mirren result. Tip have a few £ds on Grenta getting a draw when they play. To Be honest he had that hardman quality and showed leadership and I could relate to him and enjoy our rivalry more than most guys who supported English teams, which I could not understand. Saying that it was at the time when we were not in the ascendency. I have enjoyed meeting up with him in recent years. I look forward to meeting up wtth him over next 8 years.

Just in from work, and what an enjoyable night I had taking all the angry bears of Greenock (or so it seemed) home after watching their heroes get a right good going over.

I tried to keep the huge smile from my face and gave it the old 'you must feel what i felt like after Basle, yet look what happened that year!' and most actually thought they could go all the way in the UEFA. They forget we had Sutton, BBJ, Lambert, Lenny, Thommo and Henrik whilst they have erm, Naismith, Whittaker, Weir, Cousin and Boyd!

I was a wee bit disappointed with the way the start of this discussion was going with regards the fans who haven't shown up for the past two games. The SPL knew exactly what they were doing when they re-arranged this Falkirk fixture. Why wasn't the Rangers game v St Mirren not played last Wednesday for example? For me, I have been going through a wee bout of depression and getting up out my bed has been a major achievement this past week never mind taking my bhoys up to Parkhead in the weather we had Saturday and last nights game being re-arranged exactly two weeks before Christma
