Reenergised Celtic should have enough for three points

While transfer deadline fever will grab most of the headlines today, Gordon Strachan and his team have a hugely important game of football ahead of them. Fir Park is seldom an easy venue for Celtic, and with Motherwell enjoying their best season in years, they can be sure of a difficult game tonight.

Not that I am expecting anything other than a Celtic win. The whole club will have received a boost from the signings of Koki Mizuno and Georgios Samaras yesterday, and the sight of the big Greek striker in the dressing room is sure to bring a focus and energy to his team mates.

Three points and a clean sheet please, Celtic.

On Sunday Bobo will be up against Didier Drogba; a player whose class is greater than anything he's likely to come up against in the SPL. A good performance from the Guinean and he must move up the queue to get a start when he returns.

Morning all, (well it was when I started this)

The Express story is NO surprise.

Someone else on this site, if he really wanted to, could explain in some detail about the historic (say 25 years) of rippling insiduous tentacles that entwine that paper and Edmiston drive.

Many a baffling mystery of apparent mejia bias could be cleared simply by understanding that relationship.

There are a thousand ripples of rumours in the Scottish Football puddle every day and I have little doubt that this is one of them.

In fact many a Celtic site has even speculated upon its likelihood.

However what makes this one different is that it obviously would meet DM's agenda and if he wants it to be given prominence or if he needs someone to do his bidding....'get me the Express' would not be an unlikely call.

Without trying to labour the point, The Express Group is a massively royalist, loyalist, and little britain megaphone.

Let's be honest, if the Star, Record or Sun had published it as speculation there would have been leaks, counter-rumours, spoilers, and embellishments all across the tabloids.

This is a specific leak and is specifically leaked and will no doubt briefly achieve the diverting impact its author desires.

What it doesn't do is change reality!

    Anyway......

St-Gris - last thread, I see where you are coming from but I am not blinded by the paeans of praise being heaped upon Mr Hutton.

He is a vastly improved offensive (in both senses of the word) specimen that he was before the resurrection of Wattey and Fatty show.

His defending remains abject and risible at the top level.

Alan Hutton has bossed Aiden McGeady in precisely one half game of their head to head confrontations.

I would place a bet on him having another excretory orifice ripped for him in the next game and subsequently for his value to plummet faster than a Northern Rock Share.

At Ibrox where we admittedly got humped, Aiden almost changed the game when he was brought on.

Hutton stopped his wandering assaults down our left hand side and was left in a tangled mess on at least three occasions.

It was a rare oasis of enjoyment in a desert of depression.

Stay or go, I don't care.

We will win because of who we've got, how we play, the desire that burns, the determination to wear the colours like a tattoo of battle, and the fans' belief!

Not because of who they keep, let go, bring in, or sacrifice to 'Billy - the god of goats'!

    Just my humble opinion.

    Hail Hail

It may not surprise you but Andy McInnes, cheify at the Express, is a fairly close aquantance of Lord Voldemort and this reeks severely of a hatchet job on our recent good tidings.

    SOAL,

They wouldn't pay 4m for Skoosh in the summer, it's hard to see them paying more than double that now. Most of Hutton's dosh will be used to service debt, not to splash out on signings.

Thought this info from last post on last thread as worth repeating:

Scott Brown can not fall into the "three clubs in a year" category.

The rule runs from July 1 to June 30 each year.

Brown joined Celtic in May 2007 and therefore is not affected.

The rule does not include loan deals and there are exemptions for nations that play "summer/autumn" football.

    The recently amended rule reads:

'Players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs during one season. During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for two clubs.

'As an exception to this rule, a player moving between two clubs belonging to associations with overlapping seasons (i.e. start of the season in summer/autumn as opposed to winter/spring) may be eligible to play in official matches for a third club during the relevant season provided he has fully complied with his contractual obligations towards his previous clubs.'

I hear that Kevin Keegan is keeping tabs on Brown, but, despite recent disappointing displays, I would be utterly amazed if he left in this transfer window.

But at say £10million-plus I would be very tempted to cash in during the summer transfer window.

A £6million profit in a year would be very attractive.

PS:I totally agree with Estadio's analysis that the Express story is a transparently "strategic" leak from Murray to deflect from the shambolic chaos that is Rangers transfer policy,

It may be 100% gash or 100% accurate, whos to say. But the fact that the press are running with it not 4 days after I heard seems to give some substance to the story.

Wouldn't say that something is obviously up with Scott Brown. To me he is simply taking time to adjust to life with Celtic, he recently said that he's already played in more games this season than he did all of last season.

Remember John Collins didn't exactly set the heather on fire during his first season with us, it can take time.

If tru, it would be very disappointing. I still think he has a dynamism absent from almost any other in Scotland. 6 months ago, he looked like a superstar in the making, with comparisons made with a young Roy keane. There must be reasons for the drop off in influence and form over the last 4 months.

It may indeed be rubbish, and might have the laptop loyal media happy to publish, but I wonder if Scott Brown really is happy at Celtic. His body language on the park has recently been poor. For that matter, so has Scott McDonald's to a lesser extent. I wonder if the players are getting fed up at being outnumbered in the middle of the park, and having the long ball punted up the park from centre halves with no ability to play the ball to feet, never mind into space.

Our recent performances and lack of sparkle (indeed for most of the last 15 months) stem from being overrun in midfield and insisting on a back 4 with no overlap. Scott Brown must be fed up having to constantly cover more than one opposition player when they have the ball, and being bushwhacked by 2 at once when he has the ball.

I wonder if he has expressed his unhappiness about our tactics. WGS is pretty arrogant about having his opinion challenged on anything.

As far as our Aussie Scott is concerned. Scott McDonald is playing with a very ordinary strike partner in JVOH, at least when he has back to goal, and Jan is constantly outmuscled by defenders.

Unless we change tactics, go 3-5-2, of bring in defenders who can go forward into wide spaces, then the dismal performances will continue.

Remember that Scott Brown, in particular, was used to an expansive fluid approach at Hibs. He is also not a Celtic man from the cradle, so perhaps doesn't have the Hutton mentality of being at his dream club already.

WE don't have the excuse this year of playing against packed defences, as most of our opponents have been more creative and forward thinking on the park than we have.

    Big Liam, :-)

    Like it.

Bazzabhoy, of course there is interest in Scott Brown, there has been from the moment he signed for Celtic, and for Artur Boruc, and several others.

    Though not everyone.

Money is made by agents when they move players on, and the last few days of a window is prime time for sales.

Players can also double or treble their income by moving.

Throw the story to a newspaper, create some confusion, maybe some bad blood, if you are trying to make a deal, there is nothing to lose. On Friday morning, you are heading off for some sunshine.

First off, I very much hope tonight's game survives the weather.

It will be interesting to see the role Scott Brown plays tonight given this morning's speculation.

I'll say this, if anyone is willing to stump up £10 million for any of our players then you have to consider. Weight it up against key factors such as replacements, potential impact on squad and performances, etc. then you make your evaluation. Hence, why Artur was deemed to valuable to let go at this moment in time.

£10 million for Brown just now? Too late in the day. In the summer? It's always good to talk...

Prediction: Motherwell 1 v 2 Celtic (McDonald with a brace).

Not given my tuppence worth for a while on team form..

I think it is only fair to judge Jvoh Scott Brown, Donatti etc when we have regular full backs playing.

We have had to endure fillers for full backs for over a year. Centre backs playing out wide hoofing the ball up the park. No blame apportioned there. First rule of defence..clear the ball out of the danger zone.

Problem is that without a ball carrying, good passer for full back the mid field gets missed out.

Therefor no service from Defence to Mid.

What follows is no service to the forwards from Mid to front. I know I am not saying anything new here but I dont think we can judge this team until we have the right structure at full back and an older head in midfield to support SB. Scott Brown is a pup. Lets not expect too much of him in his first season.

Well, now I have sorted that out we can all forget about the blog and get back to work.

Scott Brown is a player and will be an even better player in the years to come, lets get behind the lhad and show him some support he is after all part of the Celtic family and a vital part at that!

    Hutton signs for Spurs- confirmed

Alan Hutton is expected to make his Barclays Premier League debut against Manchester United at the weekend after Tottenham confirmed his arrival from Rangers.

The 23-year-old Scotland right-back is the third signing at White Hart Lane in the January transfer window, with Jonathan Woodgate and Chris Gunter already bolstering Juande Ramos' defence.

A statement from Spurs confirmed: "We are delighted to announce we have reached agreement with Glasgow Rangers for the transfer of Alan Hutton."

According to Rangers boss Walter Smith, Spurs made "an offer we couldn't turn down".

They initially made a move at the start of the transfer window but Hutton turned down the chance to move south, before agreeing to a deal when Spurs went back in for him.

Damien Comolli, Tottenham's sporting director, watched Hutton before he impressed in Scotland's defeat to Italy last November. Manchester United were also linked with him during his progress at Ibrox.

RANGERS loanee Andy Webster has been ordered by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to pay Hearts £150,000 for breaking his contract to join Wigan in August 2006.

FIFA had initially ordered defender Webster to pay £625,000, and Hearts had been seeking £4.6million.

However Webster will split payment of the smaller sum with Wigan, and the result could be perceived as a victory for player power.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decided Webster should pay up the remainder of his contract with Hearts, which had less than a year to run, as compensation for his departure from Tynecastle.

Webster, 25, who is currently on loan at Rangers, could now complete a permanent switch to Ibrox.

In a statement, CAS said: "The CAS has determined that an amount of £150,000 has to be paid by Webster to Hearts as compensation for unilateral breach of contract."

Wigan, Webster and Hearts each appealed against FIFA's judgement in the case, with Hearts adamant they should receive more compensation because of the cost of replacing the Scotland defender.

The CAS hearing took place in October last year, in Lausanne.

Ipswich have accepted an offer from Rangers for goalkeeper Neil Alexander.

The 29-year-old Scotland international will now hold talks with Rangers.

Ipswich are poised to sign a goalkeeper from the Barclays Premier League as his replacement.

Alexander has been an ever-present in the Ipswich goal so far this season, making 29 starts, and made a penalty save against Plymouth last night.

He is expected to become deputy to Allan McGregor if he completes a move to Rangers.

Ipswich boss Jim Magilton told official club website www.itfc.co.uk: "It is a dream move for Neil and we wouldn't stand in his way.

"He is back in the Scotland national squad and we are aware that he is very keen to push his international ambitions and a move back to Scotland will enhance that.

"We are now lining up a replacement from the Premiership and are confident we will have a new 'keeper in place inside the next 24 hours."

West Brom have released former Celtic striker John Hartson.

Welsh international Hartson, who joined the club from Celtic in the summer of 2006, had fallen out of favour at The Hawthorns and failed to make an appearance for the Coca-Cola Championship leaders this season.

The 32-year-old has not featured in Tony Mowbray's squad since a 1-0 home win over Cardiff on February 20.

Hartson joined Norwich on a month's loan in October as he tried to fashion a move away from the midlands club, but the Canaries did not follow up their interest.

Hartson scored six goals, including two on his debut in a 2-0 victory over Hull, in 24 appearances for Albion.

So to summaise the latest transfer news from Glasgow's second club:

Samaras doesn't turn up for a medical and signs for Celtic (or "Celtic sign Greek after Rangers end Interest" to the press)

Hutton is gone for £8M + theoretical add ons, like Spurs wining the Champions Leagus (so that's "£10M Hutton Most Expensive Scottish Player Ever")

Cousin deal may yet be on (delete "Joy as Cousin Stays" and insert "More Money for Walter")

Faye is coming back ("Joy as Midfielder Returns to Ibrox")

Alexander (who?) is signed (that's "International Keeper Strengthens Walter's Men")

Discussions with Dailly continue ("Silver Fox Chases Scotland Legend")

Bid for Lafferty submitted ("Walter Chases Towering International Striker")

and at the number one club?

Samaras signs ("Rangers Reject at Parkhead Instead")

Koki signs ("Unknown Japanese To Replace Nakanura?")

Scott Brown a little off pek form ("Brown Anxious To End Parkhead Hell?")

    Can I get a job as a sub-editor please??

I have it on very good authority that Scott Brown knew nothing about any transfer moves until he arrived at Lennoxtown this morning. It's all a load of brown (no pun intended) stuff as far as he is concerned.

He should come quite cheap if he's out of contract in 6 months. Every time I've seen him since we've been linked with him I've always came under the impression that he has a lot of potential but is still very raw.

Good presence though and I'd be happy if we managed to get him.

I was in at Celtic Park this morning, to buy tickets for the cup game at kilmarnock.
I just happened to mention about tickets for the Barca game at Celtic Park, and she said that there are tickets for sale to Celtic One Members now.
I'm a Celtic One Member. And I managed to buy two, which was the maximum allowed.
So if there are any CO Members that are looking for tickets you may still have a chance.
They are only on sale to-day for C.O Members

No, they had an argument about who was sitting up front with the taxi driver to Ross Hall, so they went in separate taxis (Celtic were paying anyway).

I believe Aston Celtic have had a deal agreed with Spurs for Kevin Prince Boateng (midfielder) and have Routledge (winger) having a medical.

Clearing the way for Maloney or am I putting 2 and 2 together??

Rangers have announced on their official website that they have signed Christian Dailly on a rest of season loan to replace Ugo Ehiogu. I quote "Dailly, who is almost a year younger than Ehiogu at 34".

Do you think they are desperately trying to talk this up as a good deal ?

If the weather we're getting in West Donegal just now is anything to go by, I wouldn't hold out too much hope for the game tonight.

Driving, sleety rain, driven by a cold norwester. However if it's on wrap up well.

Part of me hopes that the game is off, as better conditions will reduce the lottery effect and our injured and new players will have more time to get fit and acclimatised. It's not as if they are getting their games played either.

I'll probably get shot down for that.

However, as yet there has been no rain, so hopefully it will stay off to allow the game to go-ahead this evening.

Re your comments earlier about our long ball game does it not seem that this only occurs when we play away?

The reason I ask is that I was intrigued by Tom Boyd's comments on Monday night on Celtic TV when he suggested that with away pitches as they are at this time of the year we couldn't play our normal game and the only way to play was a long ball to compensate. Otherwise he felt our lightweight midfield would literally be bogged down. That seemed to confirm much of what WGS said after the Falkirk match that unfortunately we had to learn to play that way at this time. My only counter to that is I've always believed that long or short an accurate ball is the key and where I think we get caught out is a combnation of poor distribution from the back and poor movement at the front.

Interesting to see that Brechin and Hamilton will be replaying their cup tie because Brechin fielded an ineligible player in their 2-1 victory.

    SFA report here

What this means is that the tie is played on the 2nd of February. Aberdeen play the winners of this tie, but because they have a postponed CIS semi-final tie, two matches against Bayern Munich and a game against Motherwell in the mid-weeks of February, they are going to have to fit the 5th round tie in somewhere before the 6th round is played.

Looks like our match could be the one to make way on Sunday the 10th of February.

    Gary Caldwell CSC.

Nakamura is the best passer of the ball in the country.

Maloney's return (if it materialises) will not alter this.

Gary Caldwell's omission from the team, however, would at least cause the average pass completion stats to increase ;-)

So what are we looking at tonight the game abandoned 30 minutes before the start. Or the game abandoned midway through due to torrential rain.

Or the players forced to play on a pitch that is more akin to mud wrestling.
