Strachan ban SFA retribution for earlier embarrassment

When I heard Gordon Strachan had been banned for four games following the verbal combat between Garry Pendrey and a football-area-overhanging Aberdeen spectator-area-steward, I thought of the old Clash number, ‘I fought the law and the, law won.’

Gordon Strachan has really got under the skin of Scottish football’s disciplinarians; having the temerity to turn up to a hearing with a lawyer-and proving his point-was just too much to bear.

Alas for Gordon, the ‘law’ is always going to have an opportunity to even the score. Four games; he was a spectator to the main event! What utter nonsense.

Get back to what you are best at, Gordon, skelping Rangers into second (or third) place, stop tormenting the suits.

Rangers arranged a medical for Samaras, but the player didn't turn up because he was talking to Celtic instead.

    Celtic have signed:

    1) Andreas Hinkel (24) - Germany International
    2) Koki Mizuno (22) - Japan International
    3) Giorgios Samaras (22) - Greek International
    4) Ben Hutchinson (20) - Youngster snatched on a Bosman from an EPL club.

    All under 25.

A central defender about to sign.

Rangers have sold Hutton and tried to sell Cousin - now left with a very unhappy player who doesn't want to be there. They failed to sign Hearts and Dundee United goalkeepers who turned them down because of the poor money on offer. Faye was sent packing to Blackburn Rovers and has now returned with his tail between his legs.

Oh, and Rangers have acquired Christian Dailly on a Bosman - stop laughing at the back.

If there were any decent and honest journalists out there, they'd be asking some very searching questions of Sir Minty Moonbeams amd Batty Wattie.

    Only in Scotland.

PS. What reports about Scott Brown???

It's a disgrace that this punishment has been handed out to WGS, but hardly surprising is it?

But what else do we expect from the bitter, twisted, small-minded individuals who inhabit the cloistered halls of the SFA.

I mean even the radio Snyde pundits were unanimous in their backing of WGS in this situation, although FDJ and Spew Keevins weren't on the "panel" last night.

Says it all really doesn't it??

Celtic MUST appeal this even although I wouldn't hold my breath in expectation of an about-turn in the ban!

The SB story sounds like hooey to me.

Why would someone hand in a transfer request 1 day before the deadline?

They wouldn't-- they would wait till summer. I have no idea what the agenda is here, if he is in the huff or whether the journalist is stirring but this is a non-starter in my view.

this is all a bit odd re skoosh, why leave it to the penultimate day to request a transfer, doesnt really give you a lot of time to find another club.
i F IT WAS TRUE THAT HE WAS UNHAPPY THEN i am sure he would have been punted at the start of the window leaving us plenty of time and money to replace him.
doesn;t add up to me, mind you if we could get say 8 million for him I would let him go, he's been a disappointment.

Unfortunately SB's agent has previous regarding requesting transfers from his clients.

I can't see Celtic selling at the minute unless:

    a) We are offered silly money - £10m plus, or

    b) A replacement has been scouted and available immediately.

I don't think Midfield is a position Celtic can afford to be light on during the run in.

PS It could be that this journalist was reading the blog yesterday and was none too happy with all our optimism.

If Scott Brown really isn't happy at Celtic - and his performances over the last 6 weeks or so seem to suggest there may be some truth in that - then we should just sell him for a good 8-10 million and use the money elsewhere.

TBH, I personally think he is over-rated and only gets as much praise as he does because he is Scottish. His major attributes seems to be covering every blade of grass, getting booked for crunching challenges and running straight at defenders. I've not really seen anything from him that would make me miss him.

But then, that's just my view. I don't live in Scotland anymore, and only watch the Celtic games on Ch67. I never saw him at Hibs very often, so maybe I just haven't seen the best of him at Celtic.

  • At 30/01/08 09:33, Blogger rimtimtim said…

I may be wrong, but, "eyeing an exit", and "considering putting in a transfer" does not mean that the player has handed in a transfer request. Too much good news for Celtic in the last 48 hours it seems and there has to be a stop to that or else people will start thinking, North of Hawick, that Celtic are the best organised club in Scoatland.

South of Hawick the people probably agree that Celtic are the number one club, but in our idiosyncratic land the opinion formers are, as Matt McGinn used to put it, working two nights and a Sunday double time to daze and confuse the football loving public.

I hope this fires the wee barra up for tonight´s game. Give us a goal Skoosh!

Been lurking for a while, and looksI chose a good day to sign up, 2 decent signings yesterday, possible shock exit at parkhead with brown, and rumours that wee Hutton bottling out of a move to Spurs.

It's a weird time for a player to hand in a request (if he has actually done so), unless there is truth to the allegation that he has had a bust up with WGS and wants out. I reckon it could just be King Billy McKay trying to stir things up a bit, if the Orcs can get 9 mill for hutton, let's see what i can get for Skoosh!

The skoosh stuff is only because they can't go with the headlines "Celtic sign two more international player" & "Ibrox fire sale continues"

First attempt at sending I was told there was an error, but 2nd attempt seemed to work.

It was re. Bazzabhoys mobile no.

As for the Skoosh Brown story, no doubt this is yet another attempt to create instability within the Celtic ranks after a good day yesterday where we make 2 signings and TFOD are laughed at due to Coozan fiasco and Hutton's "will he/won't he" saga.
Laptop Loyal "journalism" at it's best?????

    Remains to be seen though.

I sincerely hope there is not a shred of truth in this, as I believe that once best utilised, we will see the best of SB. Give him the rest of this season to fully bed in as a Celtic player and I'm sure next season we will see his undoubted potential becoming more a reality.

Getting onto your point Paul, a Celtic manager has to do what a Celtic manager has to do. I am sure Strachan would much prefer to concentrate on the playing side but he is forced to take sides when injustice is apparent. It´s a lose-lose situation. If he gags himself he will be failing to stand up for his team and if he challenges authority he will gagged by them. There are times when one has to box clever but when the dye is cast he might as well fight them.

Dialogue from 1961 film "Saturday Night,Sunday Morning"

Character played by Norman Rossington, peeved at the rebellious nature of his mate.

"At the end of the day, where does all this fighting get you?"

Character played by Albert Finney, in Nottinghamshire accent,

"Ah never saw where not fighting got you!!!"

I Fought the Law" was first sang by Sonny Curtis and the Crickets and then later by the Bobby Fuller Four.

Koki isn't coming on an 'S' signing. He's an international player and I'd expect to see him perform before the end of the season. I never judge a player's ability/suitability until they're in their second season anyway.

The problem with the grumblers at Celtic Park is a separate issue. It's fine having an opinion outside the ground but inside it should be all about 'support'.

Also got to remember that Koki is older than Sno and I wish people would get off his back as he has all the attributes to be the real deal.

    Paul67,

I am in a severe quandary here verging on dilemma.

I don’t know if I want Hutton to stay or go?

From a football perspective – Hutton has the beating of McGeady – Aiden cant match him for brute strength and cant catch him when Huttons on the charge, the proof is there guys, just take off they green tints and you’ll see it – and let’s not kid ourselves Hutton is a major player for them.

From a financial perspective - £10M, no wait, £8M, no hang on, £6M – whatever – is a stack of cash for any club. That kind of money – if it’s spent – can turn a team into championship winning standard. IF IT’S SPENT. Did I write that – They already have Huttons replacement playing in the team. HE WONT SPEND IT.

From an embarrassing perspective – When do you pay your best / most improved player to leave the club (ignoring Henkes £1M – cough, cough). DM is squirming, absolutely fizzing mad – Hutton has him by the short and curlies – you want the cash Sir D – so do I – so cough up. I will not put pen to paper until the money is in my account. He really needs Hutton to go – its personal now. He will go.

From Celtic fans perspective – How funny is it seeing them trading like this. Shoddy barrel scraping – they cant do anything without having collateral in place first. The transfer window has over 36 hours to go – should be fun.

  • At 30/01/08 10:47, Blogger Big Wavy said…

    TrueTim,

Don't represent the majority ? Don't get that fella. I think ALL Celtic fans are like me and can't wait to see him strut his stuff with us.

We've brought in a young twenty-something who is a japanese international playing in front large stadia from what I've seen. Like all the young lads they'll need bedding in time and patience from the support, which from me they and all the players will get, but I don't think for a minute the guy is going to be strutting his stuff at Barrowfield and personally think he'll be an outstanding impact sub against tired limbs for the last 20 minutes.

I'd say Hutton leaving is the best for us.

It will weaken them and make us more likely to win the league. Thereby, hopefully, giving us an automatic place in next season's CL. Not to mention the joy of winning the league.

They may receive a lot of money for Hutton but it won't be spent in the next 36 hours. If they spend it in the summer then so be it. We'll have the CL money to spend and them spending big in the summer will make next season's SPL more interesting.

On the Scott Brown non-Story it looks as if a few journo's have launched a retaliatory strike after the Celts made a double signing.

They are hurting no? I expect the routine Boruc to leave shocker in the next few days. Did S.Brown have a falling out because his form was scrutinized by the manager? I'd like to think so. The honeymoon period is over and the lads form needs to improve. Even if it was true , we win as any fee will dwarf Huttons alleged move to spurs.

In saying that why haven't the press picked up on the shambles which is transfer dealing over at minty's towers? Cousin fiasco? Hutton being kicked out? Missed medicals and C.Dially?

Still , a certain journalists 2-pager on how Samaras would star at Rangers under uncle Walter still has pride of place on the notice board in the office.

    Ha all,

part-time blogger full time reader of this site.

Just a thought on the Hutton farce, could it be that Murray does not want to collect the alledged £9 million ransom placed on Huttons head too early in the transfer window, otherwise there would be pressure placed on him to bring in fresh blood, thus spend the transfer fee. Im sure he would much rather pay off some debt with this windfall rather than bring in new faces to Ibrox. However, if, as I expect, Hutton does go to Spurs between now and the end of the tranfer window, The excuse for not spending any of that money will seem perfectly legitimate to the great unwashed. ie. "We did not have enough time to identify signing targets before the transfer window closed as the Hutton deal was finalised too late in the day"
    DM.

Just a thought, lets see what happens.

    Bazzabhoy,

Paul kindly passed on your no - thanks again Paul - and I will give you a call later this afternoon about meeting tonight.

Hopefully the pitch inspection will pass OK, currently its sunny but plenty clouds on horizon, here just up the road from Fir Park.

BTW remember reading that post re. the £12m for Skoosh - was it your mate or something that met Skoosh in Embra who gave the info? - but didn't realise it was you.

Wouldn't want to lose him, but if true, £12m is a good bit of business and I'm sure we could replace him in the summer.
Still, as I mentioned already, I would like to see him fulfill his undoubted potential here at Celtic.

    Watch this space I guess.

Paul are you aware of any unrest between SB and GS or if there is abid already on the table??

    HAIL! HAIL!

Scott Brown can not fall into the "three clubs in a year" category.

The rule runs from July 1 to June 30 each year.

Brown joined Celtic in May 2007 and therefore is not affected.

The rule does not include loan deals and there are exemptions for nations that play "summer/autumn" football.

    The recently amended rule reads:

'Players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs during one season. During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for two clubs.

'As an exception to this rule, a player moving between two clubs belonging to associations with overlapping seasons (i.e. start of the season in summer/autumn as opposed to winter/spring) may be eligible to play in official matches for a third club during the relevant season provided he has fully complied with his contractual obligations towards his previous clubs.'

I hear that Kevin Keegan is keeping tabs on him at Newcastle, but, despite recent disappointing displays, I would be utterly amazed if he left in this transfer window.

But at say £10million-plus I would be very tempted to cash in during the summer transfer window.

Calton Tongues, I think we are going to the Follow Follow level when we start hoping for young players to suffer serious injury. Much as I want Celtic to prevail, I would sooner lose than hope for ANY boy to suffer as you suggest.

Would be pretty sorry to see Scott brown go. His body language on the park has recently been poor. For that matter, so has Scott McDonald's to a lesser extent. I wonder if the players are getting fed up at being outnumbered in the middle of the park, and having the long ball punted up the park from centre halves with no ability to play the ball to feet, never mind into space.

Our recent performances and lack of sparkle (indeed for most of the last 15 months) stem from being overrun in midfield and insisting on a back 4 with no overlap. Scott Brown must be fed up having to constantly cover more than one opposition player when they have the ball, and being bushwhacked by 2 at once when he has the ball.

Scott McDonald is playing with a very ordinary strike partner, at least when he has back to goal, and JVOH is constantly outmuscled by defenders.

Unless we change tactics, go 3-5-2, of bring in defenders who can go forward into wide spaces, then the dismal performances will continue.

Remember that Scott Brown, in particular, was used to an expansive fluid approach at Hibs. He is also not a Celtic man from the cradle, so perhaps doesn't have the Hutton mentality of being at his dream club already.

WE don't have the excuse this year of playing against packed defences, as most of our opponents have been more creative and forward thinking on the park than we have.

Ipswich Town have accepted an offer from Rangers for goalkeeper Neil Alexander.

The 29-year-old Scotland international will now hold talks with Rangers.

Ipswich are poised to sign a goalkeeper from the Barclays Premier League as his replacement.

Alexander has been an ever-present in the Ipswich goal so far this season, making 29 starts, and made a penalty save against Plymouth last night.

He is expected to become deputy to Allan McGregor if he completes a move to Rangers.

Ipswich boss Jim Magilton told official club website www.itfc.co.uk: "It is a dream move for Neil and we wouldn't stand in his way.

"He is back in the Scotland national squad and we are aware that he is very keen to push his international ambitions and a move back to Scotland will enhance that.

"We are now lining up a replacement from the Premiership and are confident we will have a new 'keeper in place inside the next 24 hours."

If the weather we're getting in West Donegal just now is anything to go by, I wouldn't hold out too much hope for the game tonight.

Driving, sleety rain, driven by a cold norwester. However if it's on wrap up well.

Part of me hopes that the game is off, as better conditions will reduce the lottery effect and our injured and new players will have more time to get fit and acclimatised. It's not as if they are getting their games played either.

I'll probably get shot down for that.
