Here’s hoping Celtic have a lawyer, or two, track-suited on the bench today. They could come in useful.

I hope that if he (Gordon Strachan) or his staff kops abuse today, they’ll receive support in at least equal measure.

Like the look of midfield, feel we need both Brown and Hartley with the luxury of both Naka and Aiden.

Too lightweight with Donati in there too!!!

If Donati plays we need to do withould either Naka or Aiden.

    Simple arithmetic for me.

Celtic, Celtic thats the team for me,
Celtic, Celtic on to victory,
They're the finest team in Scotland, I'm sure you will agree,
We'll never give up till we've won the cup and the scottish football league
They come from bonnie Scotland, they come from county Cork,
They come from dear old Donegal and even from New York,
From every street in Glasgow they proudly make their way,
To a place called dear old paradise and this is what they say.
Celtic, Celtic thats the team for me,
Celtic, Celtic on to victory,
They're the finest team in Scotland, I'm sure you will agree,
We'll never give up till we've won the cup and the scottish football league.
There's Fallon, Young and Gemmel who proudly wear the green,
There's Clark, McNeill and Kennedy the best there;s ever been,
Jim Johnstone, Murdoch, Chalmers, John Divers and John Hughes,
And sixty thousand Celtic fans who proudly shout the news.
Celtic, Celtic thats the team for me,
Celtic, Celtic on to victory,
They're the finest team in Scotland, I'm sure you will agree,

by your thinking that would make them a less lightwieght midfielder.

scott brown has played superb so far. but he`s covering hinkel and the CB`s !!!!!!

our manager went against the grain to switch aidean and naka.
it worked, but my guess was it was more for hinkel, than anyone else.

    HT Aberdeen 0-3 Celtic

Well well. What an excellent first half performance. We have been ruthless in front of goal today. All of our attacking play has looked like it might produce a goal. Aiden on top form, Naka strolling through the game, Hartley and Broon excellent in midfield. JVoH has been very quiet - not seen him much in the game at all and Hinkel will need to get sharper.

Aberdeen will be shell shocked and if we score again early in the second half we could run up a cricket score.

The pressure was on today and the bhoys have responded magnificently.

You can't ask for more than to be 3-0 up at Pittodrie at half-time.

The only concern is the high balls to Hinkel that have resulted in three Aberdeen chances, but i'll put it down to match-fitness and getting used to the defenders around him.

The dilemma will be when to bring the subs on.

Aiden and Scott Brown have looked right up for this and without any petulance or late challenges. Hartley playing has allowed our other three midfielders to burst forward.

Just watching the Manchester derby during the half-time interval, it is really good to see strips without corporate logos emblazoned all over them. (here comes the nostalgic bit now)

How much is sponsorship generally worth to us every year? Unless it is a few million a year, would we not be tempted to simply give it up, get a classically designed strip and really let the other teams know what we are all about?

    BBC stats at HT

    ABERDEEN CELTIC

    Possession
    45% 55%

    Shots on target
    0 2

    Shots off target
    8 4

    Corners
    3 2

    Fouls
    8 8

There's something deeply satisfying about scoring 3 goals from 2 shots on target.

We could easily have conceded 3 in the first half - not good enough defensively.

Stage is set for Georgeous in the second half - lots of space to run into.

And leave the weight thing out.

Lawrence Dalaglio wouldn't be a good fit in the midfield at Pittodrie.

Do you suggest that Massimo Donati can tackle better?

Do you think he covers better?

Do you think he gives less ball away?

It is an easy game to play.

4-0, and that was an absolutely wonderful goal.

Naka wins a FK on the edge of our own box, its taken quickly to McGeady who races up the park, goes past the first Aberdeen player like he isn't there, and sprays it out to Naylor. Naylor gives him it back, and McGeady produces a moment of brillaince to spin and pirhouette past two Aberdeen players, floats a cross to the back post, and Scott McDonald nods in a header from two yards.

    Beautiful goal.

Was that Falkirk game just a few short weeks ago???

The referee made two shameful decisions today. We must maintain this level of performance to negate such outrageous decisions. One foul by Aiden = one booking. Not even a tug, just a linking of arms. Three more fouls and he'll be suspended again.

Boooking for Aiden Mc Geady outrageous but he needs to learn to button his lip. The captain needs to step up on these occasions and take issue with the referee. The 4th goal. I am still licking my lips. I simply chuckled when Barry Robson netted. The smile on his face said it all.

I would like to repeat my comments last night.

" I have complete confidence in wins tomorrow and next Saturday which will place us one point behind Rangers who will be going to Kilmarnock following a midweek tussle with Panathanaikos. Midfield and front players excellent today, Robson looks like he will fit in no problem and add some strength to the mid. Very versatile player and we will get more goals from him.

In the second half, Hinkel improved and MeManus and Caldwell deteriorated dreadfully. How many headers did they lose to smaller Aberdeen players.I could jump higher than either of them and I'm almost as old as Celtic Lover. Naylor was the pick of the back 4 and linked well with Aiden and Skippy.

I actually thought big Jan had another very useful game today and was unlucky not to score.Should have had a stonewall penalty. What more can we say about Skippy. If he goes on like this he could break Henrik's record.

A very satisfying result and some very classy, pacy football from Celtic. I loved Ian Crocker's closing remarks today, " watch out Rangers, Celtic are coming to get you."

Actually, I was praying that the Referee would not.... give Aiden a RED CARD!

Aiden's Persistent Protests and Back Chat, was so blatant and wilful... that I am sure the Referee was teetering on the cusp of losing his patience.

To Blame Aiden's growing collection of Yellow Cards, strictly on poor Refereeing decisions is flying in the face of common sense.

One can blame the Referee for making questionable decisions against us, until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane... but senseless back chat and insolent remarks by our players in protesting the issue... is the height of nonsense.

Messrs. Brown, McDonald and Aiden... are acting like juvenile delinquents, with a chip on their shoulders, bucking against the Authority of the Official in Charge.

    Hey, you Guys...cut it out...!

I appreciate your concerns but Paul and Danny etc are absolutely 100% correct to point out that the foul itself was highly debatable and for sure was never a yellow card offence. The yellow was awarded for the foul, not for any petulance or back-chat etc by Aiden.

The ref indicated that the card was for pulling the player back. In fact if Aiden did anything it was an unsuccessful attempt at a hand-off and I can very clearly understand his fustration.

Please watch the game again as you normally do and I'm sure you will agree with the above clarification.

And was anyone really in doubt that Barry Robson was going to score with that free kick?

    My dear,dear friend, Timoot...

I will watch the re-run very carefully...as I always do, do.

There is a type of foul, that is absolute Anathema to the refereeing fraternity...

You don't know what it is?

    Okay... I forgi'e ye..

It is TACKLING AN OPPONENT FROM THE REAR!

Now, in today's incident... I am at this moment, not too confident if the above infringement was actually committed by Aiden...but I know that He has been most guilty of that type of Tackle in the past... as is Nakamura... as is Scott Brown.

However, when I watch the re-run of today's incident, which prompted the referee to issue a Yellow...
I will satisfy my curiosity in noting whether Aiden did make a tackle from the rear or not.

I do know that Referees, in General.... Abhor that type of Tackling, and are instructed by their Superiors to be Unflinching in their observance of meting out punishment ...severely... whenever, they see that type of fouling.

As you have suggested, I will watch the re-run... and then I shall be more confident in my conclusion.

    Kojo.

Listened to the pundits on Radio Clyde in response to a ghirls call about Craig Thomsons display in particular the refusal of a second penalty.

They said and i kid you not, that he was being charitable to Aberdeen because of the scoreline,Andy Walker indeed opined that it was part of human nature to act in such a manner.

Lets look at the charitable Mr Thomson.

Gives Celtic a penalty for foul inside the box which prevented a goalscoring opportunity.
Charitable act-he did not send off the Aberdeen player who prevented Scott's attempt at goal.

Denies Celtic a stonewall penalty a rugby tackle that would not have looked out of place in the six nations.

Books Aberdeen player for lunge on Samaras again a goalscoring opportunity denied could have sent im off.

Books Aiden for totally innocous challenge, was he all out of charity by this time?

you`ve saved me from a lengthy post by covering all that i was going to state about the ref today

i would add that whilst basking in a 5-1 rout the potential significance of the booking on Aiden and the failure to award the stonewall open may be substantial

the league is tight at the moment ...it may come down to goal difference

Aiden consistently gets booked for nothing ...the MIB are trying their hardest to manufacture another ban

the Aiden situation is all the more ridiculous when one considers that, despite his antics, Ferguson has only been booked once this season..

the MIB know how important he is to the hun and he is being protected

Craig Thomson was guilty of cheating today ....thankfully we were too good for Aberdeen and his dishonesty had no effect on the result

I'ma fairly rare poster on here. A few weeks ao after the mass panic following our win at Falkirk, I popped on to predict (in hope probably more than expectation) that style, flair and goals normally follow a pronlonged series of shutouts and narrow victories.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think that we'd then see 2 5-1 away from home thumpings.

We're playing like champions because WE ARE CHAMPIONS

    Hail hail.

The bhoys were a pleasure to watch today, however, I've got to agree with the rest of the ghuys about the penalty refusal. What was that about? He felt sorry for them? He's supposed to be a professional. Even the Aberdeen players looked embarrassed.

Its got nothing to do with the score line, the concern is he's another ref who thinks he is a law unto himself and can pick and choose when to apply the laws of the game. Not on, the guy should be disciplined.

    Evening all -

Just in from the game, I know, almost 3 hours to travel 37 miles - not good enough!!

Couple of comments about today -

1 Magnificent support from WG, Estadio and co today. There was a young English lad in our company, who had never been to a game in Scotland before. He was completely entranced by the colour and the non-stop singing from the away corner of the ground today. Methinks we have given him a team to follow (x1 only!) in Scotland.

2 The following bets came in for me this afternoon - Celtic win (4/7), Celtic ahead at half & full time (5/4), Nakamura 1st goal (9/1), time of first goal between 11-20 mins (7/1), correct score 5-1 (50/1).
Missed out on 1st goal in 2nd half (had Aiden down for that), and last goal (had Samaras down for that).

All £1 bets, so nothing over the top, but adding onto the win for my team, rounded off a very nice day!

Regarding the ref today. I totally agree with earlier posters that the importance of McGeady's booking and the non award of the most clear cut pen you will see should be highlighted. Who knows what bearing these decisions may have in the course of a season.
What i do know is that the stats on fouls for/against and yellows for/against are heavily weighted in Rangers favour yet almost even for us.

    Another very fine performance today.

I thought Paul Hartley was excellent. He brought much needed steel to the middle of the park and today was by far his best game yet in the Hoops. Indeed, it was probably no coincidence that Skoosh Broon played his best game for quite some time. A real dilema for the manager as Donati was coming on to a game.

Aiden McGeady was simply sensational. I am on record as saying that I thought he would not make the grade and would go the same way as Beattie, Pearson, Wallace etc.

    How wrong can you be??

I may also be forced to consider my opinion of the manager as well if we can maintain this standard of performance.

I am always prepared to give most people a chance and I supported him throughout his first season. With no sign of improvement (and perhaps even a step back)over the past 18 months, I felt we should part company with him.

Like my opinion of Aiden, maybe I was too quick to judge and Gordon Strachen's "vision" is only now coming to the fore.

    Fingers crossed.

All in all a great performance, tarnished only by a cheating referee and ongoing concerns about the quality of our central defenders.

This is probably the worst we have suffered from referees in many a season and that's not saying we benefited from good refs in previous seasons! To top it all, only a couple of weeks ago the Record were running away with an article debating whether the Old Firm got better treatment from the refs - madness eh?

Anyway I'm looking forward to watching the re-run at midnight. I was telling you lot over December that we have a lot of talented players :P

I don't get the chance to watch many games but I caught the second half on Setanta.

Normally, I take a lot of the refereeing criticism on this blog with a big pinch of salt - but the guy was disgraceful. It seems to me that the Scottish telly punditry is a bit too non-confrontational - if it was an EPL game, they would be making a lot more of the poor refereeing decisions.

Apart from that, Aiden was great and we look brillaint going forward.
It does worry me though that our two central defenders can't win a single header between them.

Not a big Bobo fan - but I reckon that he maybe should play against Rangers.

It is ridiculous that after 5-1 we are still debating the ref anti-Celtic performance.

I can live with not getting a penalty when 4 up (best time to be denied a penalty) but the booking of Aiden and the booking of Young is quite different. One was for nothing while the other was a poor challenge that denied a goalscoring chance.
At the very least it was awful refereeing.

It is easy to feel sympathy for McGeady because he is repeated foul (although maybe not today as Aberdeen never got near him) but is given very little protection from Scottish referees yet get booked for that today, a disgrace.

I have to say the last time I posted after the Falkirk game I was one toe in the shaft, I asked GS to prove my faith in him right. What can I say, 10 goals in the next 2 matches, a raft of great signings, 2 great performances and the faith is topped up. We are finally hitting form after 6 months of waiting, I'm even optimistic about the barca games now. Hearts next week, another 5? I'll settle for 1-0 but I know its gonna be 3-0. Great performance and result today. As someone said earlier, it's the same players who started today, but just look at what a bit of quality competition can do for a team!

Has any other player scored with their first touch for Celtic?

That's as dominant a performance up there since we beat them 6-0 in John Barnes' season. Still I think the only game in Britain where a team scored 6 goals, with 6 different scorers and 6 different nationalities. I remember watching it at Celtic Park during the short time they put on the 'beambacks' on the big screens. Bloody freezing it was that day as well!

I am putting myself up here to be shot down in flames. I am far too young to have seen Jimmy Johnstone in his heyday (though I saw him in the 'Jungles Last Stand' night when he scored a great chip). I've heard the stories about Red Star and saw Real Madrid in the bernebeu. Can any of the 'auld hauns' say how far Aidan Mcgeady has to go to get to the great mans level as an overall player? Some of Aidan McGeadys performances this season, particularly Benfica, Falkirk and today have been nothing short of magical. the set up for the 4th goal today was magnificent.

I wonder if the Bayern scout today went away with any thoughts of pursuing McGeady. I hope not anyway. We are so very lucky to have such a gifted player.

I thought the team overall played well and Hinkel looks like he will need time to get used to scottish football and a lack of time on the ball. I also thought Hartley played excellent. He looked determined not to pass up the chance to get back in the team and stay there and to me he done more than enough to keep his place. If not for the Mcgeady wonder-show Hartley would have been my MOM.

    Can't wait for Saturday already.

Feel obliged to make a couple of comments on todays game. I actually thought that those posters criticising McGeady for backchat were wind up merchants I'm still not too sure. One thing I do know is that if they are serious then they have never kicked a ball. Not only was the booking an atrocious decision but Aiden was right top question it. As it should be questioned by WGS and every Celtic Supporter in every arena. IT is not accidental that as McGeadys form has made him indispensible to Celtic, so should his bookings mount. How many times was he booked in previous seasons. Also It is not just the act of booking, but ridiculous decisions like that affect your whole game. You start to think twice about making a tackle and lose the impetus. It is a disgraceful, calculated attempt to affect this young man's rch vein of form and I hope he continues to speak out. As for the ref feeling sorry and not awarding the penalty - he is not there to make emotional decisions he is there to interpret the rules and to do otherwise is cheating. This should be challenged also. What if, as happened a few seasons ago the league was lost by a single goal- will anyone look back to this game! The plus points are the team were superb but I hope that section of the celtic support who recently have taken to disliking certain players get off Donatti's case. Hope he's well again soon.

What an excellent game to watch, great football, didn't think we were in trouble at any point.

    Beautiful.

The thing that really peed me off though, was the inconsistency of Mr Referee. Honestly, did he feel that McGeady's first challenge of the game (which perhaps never even merited a foul) was on a par with Young's last man challenge on Georgios?

    Hunbelievable decision.

To be honest, that was the only blemish on a fantastic afternoon, one which will be remembered for a long time. At least till Hertz next week, cannot wait.

I never saw the game to-day and can't for the life of me,listen to these BBC commentators, who commentate on Celtic Games.

So I decided to lurk on CQN,and listen to the updates as they come in.
I had a couple of drinks, and enjoyed the posts that were coming in.
The only problem I had,was making my up mind, whether Celtic were playing good, bad,or so,so.

After the game finished and we had won 5-1,I came to the conclusion that we must have play quite good,so thanks for the updates.

The old saying, one swallow does'nt make a summer,if thats true, then we've had two swallows,so our summer must be here.

Killie being one swallow, and the Dons the second swallow.

I always new we would come good.
When we meet Hearts next week, and dish out more of same as to-day,
We'll have had our third swallow, then it's the big one.
We have the pleasure of meeting Barcalona at Celtic Park.

    You cant,for love,nor money,get a ticket for the game,sold out a couple of weeks ago,why is that,it's just another game,to us.

I think we're more inclined to worry about a rag bag team from the south side of Glasgow.

Celtic are on the up,and I'm looking forward to more swallows arriving every week.

    My God, its unbelievable.

We win 5-1 and the main topic of conversation is McGeady's booking. Whether or not it was merited, WE WON 5-1.

Some people are just looking to explain away their bigotry, and build up the excuses should Rangers win the league. As far as I'm concerned, Celtic have played great these past two games and look up for the battle but should Rangers win the league, they will have been the better team as Celtic were sloppy for 8 weeks that had nothing to do with crap referees and everything to do with playing crap.

We should be celebrating and enjoying that the players are responding to the pressure now and not building up the excuses column should at some point, they falter.

No, pggtips, I, and the others who were disgusted at McGeady's booking, are not building up excuses.

I am well aware that we won 5-1, and am delighted at that fact, as is every other Celtic fan on the planet, I'm sure.

I just got annoyed at the fact that he got booked for his first tackle, which was a debatable foul never mind a yellow card.

Maybe this kind of thing doesn't annoy you, and you don't mind if he gets suspended for one of the OF games.

    Fair enough.

The point is, McGeady got the booking, and never started the back-chat until after receiving the card.

So I don't think he needs to "shut it," I think he gets a raw deal from the refs. End of.

Correct syllawhowasmince, but you can't be clever when you go in for a challenge, your first challenge of the game, and get booked for it.

Fair enough, if he had given away a foul, then argued against it, and been booked for the argument - that would have been silly.

    But that's not what happened.

I would say that Skippy is the biggest culprit for talking his way into the Ref's book.

my opinion of McGeady has changed out of all recognition this season, he had added some much to his game that he's become the first player since Agathe to do something with the ball despite having two people on him, or if teams are foolish now to go one-v-one they get punished.

That is all I need to see from a wide man, either commit two players and get the ball to a team-mate (leaving them a man short) or if its one-on-one to get past his man and he does both of these things so much more often now, than ever before.

Was Aiden McGeady the first Celtic player to be suspended this season for accumation of bookings? I think he was.

That in itself should beg the question - how did that happen?

We are shooting up the hill - the time to ask a question about an outrageous decision is immediately after that decision.

It's there for all to see.

You touch on the key point.

When there's a big gap and the referees' actions cannot close it, this is less of an issue. Agreed.

It's when it's tight and the officials CAN make a difference that this abysmal bias comes into play.

Andy Davis and his part in winning the game at Tynecastle, John Rowbotham and his three penalties at Dens Park were ultimately the difference between first and second place in 2005 and 2003 respectively. I also feel strongly about Hugh Dallas's role in 1999.

Not in isolation; Celtic threw it away in 2005 and there were other fish to fry in 2003, but key decisions went in Rangers' favour. The same is happening this season.

Let's hope Celtic blow them out of the water between now and the end of the season and that 2008 does not follow the pattern.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my day today, a Celtic victory always cheers me up and raises the spirits, I'm sure it does for you too, and I'm not trying to pop the balloon by moaning about the ref.

It's just something that really annoyed me today. If Aiden gets a couple more bookings, he get a three match ban.

Looking at the way Bazza deals with the MIB, as pfayr says, a level playing field? Aye right.

PS - Refs are irrelevant, are you having a laugh? Remember Andy Davis?

Magnificent dispaly. Totally tore Aberdeen asunder.
I've said it all season, Paul Hartley is the man to hold centre of midfield. Skoosh was a huge improvement on his earlier games and was unlucky not to score from McGeadys cross. I am on record as saying that playing both McGeady and Nakamura on the same midfield, leaves us under pressure. Today we gave an outstanding performance of attacking football, but there were times when I felt that Naka left Hinkel without cover, it may seem like nitpicking, but against a stronger team we could be punished.
Not to worry however as the standard on the bench, particularily since the transfer window, will allow WGS to chop and change as needed during a game.
What about McGeady ???? the Wizard of the Hoops ! I have not seen such individual skill since the late, great Jinky.
Imagine if he was playing in the epl ?? a turn like that for Skippys goal would be highlighted on every news cast. The fans singing of "Thats why we are paranoid" was brilliant.

I'm not so sure. I don't believe it is so organised.

On the other hand, one of the things that really I love about supporting celtic is the fact that we are an 'uphill' team. Underdogs. Immigrants. We have always had to fight against the odds.

There is an agenda this season. This is make or break time for the tank-top.

How many dubious decisions have went against us, how many have went in favour of Rangers. This is not a coincidence!

Celtic are playing with flair, scoring for fun and I think will win the league BUT it will not be easy, be prepared for the full backlash of the establishment.

Rangers this year, contest every decision, pressure referees (not that they need it) and watch how many times Wattie is elaborating publicly on how they were victims of injustice. He and McCoist were the only ones who thought McGregor shouldn't have got a red card.

Anyone who thinks this is just incompetence on the part of referees, please forward your medication to me!

I'm not sure about a concerted effort on the part of referees.

This is how I view it.

You only become a referee because you love football. If you love football, you tend to take a view on who you want to win games. In other words, if your thing is actually poker, you probably couldn't care less who wins between Celtic and Aberdeen, Rangers and Falkirk, Real Madrid and Valladolid.

If you care about the game, you'll grow up wanting one team to do better than the others.

In Scotland, especially the West of Scotland, I don't think I've ever met anyone who cared about football who didn't favour either Celtic or Rangers. Even if they supported Ayr Utd or Kilmarnock or somebody, most took a position, sadly, yes, often based on religion, when I was growing up in the 1970s, but there we are.

Now, if you accept that you only put yourself through the rigours required to become a ref if you really care about the game, it stands to reason that most of the guys who do become referees are as subject to tendentiousness as the rest of us mere mortals.

    And there's the rub.

I know that I view Jan Venegoor of Hesselink's tussle with Bus as a penalty and Young's challenge on Samaras as a red card. But I'm not pretending to be objective. I love Celtic.

If, to follow this argument to its conclusion, you want Jorge Cadete to be offside at Ibrox, or Scott McDonald to be offside at Inverness, they will look offside to you and you will raise your flag.

Neutral officials would be great, but Scotland is too small to provide them. Most of them, like most of us, will favour one team over another.

From what Terry O'Neill has explained from his own experience, there is STILL an agenda in Scottish football to maintain the traditional hue of the refereeing community. Therefore we can expect to see more poor calls from guys who — giving the benefit of the doubt — may think they're calling it right, but are incapable of objectivity and, when push comes to shove, will point in favour of their preferred team, Rangers or whoever is playing against Celtic.

    And that's why we're paranoid.

Magnificent performance today by the Bhoys. 5-1 and not a failure among them, though Hunkel did take a bit of time to settle.
Some of the best football this season was played today and some sublime touches by Aiden and Naka.
It appears we have left our blip behind and the introduction of the new signings have got those in possession of the jerseys, playing like they know they cannot let things slip.
A word on Barry Robson. I was not at all sure that he would bring anything to the team. If however, he continues to produce free kicks such as todays, then I will happily be proved wrong.
I was also one of those who posted at the start of the season, criticising Aiden's end product, or rather lack thereof. I am now delighted to have my mouth hushed on that topic.

Meanwhile, despite what some may think, today's game cannot pass without comment about the referee. His refusal to award a blatant penalty for a rugby tackle was an absolutely shocking decision. Not only is it a penalty but it is at the very least a booking for the Aberdeen defender. His later booking of Aiden was an absolute joke. I didn't even see it as a foul. Added to this, he allowed at least three late challenges on Scott Brown to go unpunished - not even the award of a free kick.
His all round performance was shocking and Celtic thankfully scored enough goals to take him out of the equation. I have a feeling we will have to do this with more reglarity as the season heads towards it's conclusion.

Three in a row still very much on.
    Celtic - Still the Champions.

It cant be called sour grapes when we are winning, just objective observation, even Craig Burley had something to say about the JVOH incident.

On the MITB, I am not sure about an organised conspiracy on games, but I feel that the vast majority of them are like minded individuals who dont like us and are basically Rankers supporters and they will favour them and do us down at any opportunity if it will benefit Rankers. Indeed it has been suggested that the wearing of a Rankers tracky is de riguer at the ref's training evenings. The media are generally complicit in this as they do not highlight decisions that go against us or for Rangers. Even today, Rob McLean said on Setanta that we only beat Falkirk due to an offside goal.
However I do believe that at the level of selection, there is an agenda where it is made difficult for sny individual who, as a result of the school they attended, is perceived as being potentially a Celtic supporter,to progress through the ranks to Grade 1 status. The small number of these men are rarely allocated Celtic games. Kevin Toner was a Grade 1 ref for a good number of years yet officiated at a disproportionately low number of Celtic games compared to McCurry, Dallas etc.
I also believe that these referees are under such scrutiny when they referee Celtic games that they feel under pressure to give 50/50 decisions against Celtic as to do otherwise would bring their continued involvement at Grade 1 into doubt. You only have to look at the treatment meted out to such as Jim Callaghan, Mike Delaney and Kevin O'Donnell after decisions in games involving Celtic to come to this conclusions.Indeed the Callaghan decision cost him a trip to the World Cup, ironically being replaced by JRP Gordon. Older hauns may remember the details of a game he reffed in Italy and some "gifts" he allegedly came back with being reported in the press at the time.
I think the linesman (sorry, assistant referee)at the Falkirk game was a Brian McGarry. I wonder how many Celtic games he will officiate at in future.

no matter how we react now, we'll still be seen whinging-weegies or paranoid jungle-jims at the end of the season if we don't win the league and resort to moaning about the refs so why bother with the moaning and instead enjoy when we are actually playing well as we did today and last weekend.

You could say the same to Chris Sutton.

Did he deserve to be sent off in the League Cup Final in 2001?

I'm not going to ask about Ibrox, November 2004.

Sutton was a fantastic striker for Celtic and he was not immune to what we're talking about.

To compare mere mortals to Henrik is scarcely fair.

    Paul67,

Did you ever find out what Peter Lawwell thought about the story about Scott Brown. What was his reaction?

Brown today looked like a bhoy who was enjoying himself today. If that's an unhappy player the he's doing a good job not showing it.

On the game itself. Excellent performance. If we just had a commanding centre half to play off we would looking very good. The chances Aberdeen had today were very good and if the fall to a good team like Barca they are in the pokey. We never seem to win the first ball in the air and it crucifies you.

Attacking side of the game. Well what can say??

Aiden Awesome!! Naka beginning to get into gear!! Brown superb!! Hartley very good!!

Jan and Scott looked like players that they have had rocket put up their jackasy with the arrival of Samaras and Hutchinson. We got Donati and Robson and Mizuno to add as well.

Scott Booth just made a complete idiot of himself today with that comment about us being glad Donati was missing. I happen to think Massimo starting to come onto a game the past few weeks. This judging players with a 3 month to 6month timescale is killing me.

I'm willing to bet that Cousin will be playing against us.

    Just seen the game...

Shocking refereeing! We should have had a stonewall penalty and they wouldn't have been able to complain if they were down to 9 men.

The first penalty could have easily have been a red and Samaras being kicked across the midriff by Young (the last man) was a certain red.

The McGeady booking was the joke and we need to keep highlighting the fact refs are cautioning him for diddly squat.

If they know they're under the spotlight they won't be able to be so blatant.

Just watched the game again and we were even better than last week when we played Kilmarnock.

McGeadys booking was a disgrace. He knew it, I knew it and everybody right-minded knew it.

We have a really good squad with Robson and Samaras adding real quality.

Gordon Brown represents what we are up against in the UK. Stuck in a league too small for us we have him talking up the EPL as being the best league (copyrighted) and needing to attract the best talent by whatever means (zero tax for Murdoch companies, we get fed the scraps. The man should never be allowed into Raith Rovers again in his life assuming his small town support is not an ordinary man of the people marketing ploy.

I am really upbeat about our chances this season as the transfer window has really focussed minds.

I've always believed that the only time you can challenge a decision successfully is after a win.

You have complained about posters bringing up the McGeady booking decision. You have complained that they were moaning when they should be celebrating. You have moaned about their whingeing when you should be celebrating.

So to cut through this vicious circle of whining, how about you post an appreciation of how well you thought Celtic played today?

    Oh, and make it lengthy.

With no carping or humming and hawing.

Just describe the pure unadulterated pleasure you got from that performance.

On the ref debate i would like to offer some basic stats. Under Gordon Strachan Celtic has been the cleanest team in the league for the past 2 seasons. This year is different though:
    2005/06
    Celtic F 425 rags 546
    Celtic y 39 rags 59
    Celtic R 1 rags 1

    2006/07
    Celtic F 428 rags 510
    Celtic Y 52 rags 60
    Celtic R 3 rags 2

    2007/08
    Celtic F 276 rags 267
    Celtic Y 36 rags 32
    Celtic R 0 rags 1

    F=fouls committed
    Y=yellows
    R=reds
Our philosophy seems to have changed this year and with a "lightweight" team we have outstripped rangers this season for fouling our opponents. Or are the refs applying a new philosophy to our games? What these figures don't show is that Rangers have been awarded many more freekicks for than against this year and that Rangers opponents have been penalised far more by yellow cards than rangers have accumulated. Celtic on the other hand are pretty much evens with fouls for and against and yellows for and against. Has our "lightweight" team
with a background of discipline (Rangers have only finished below us twice since the SPL started, with their crimecount) suddenly become a bunch of cluggers?

[Can't believe what just happened, posted a rather lengthy message, only to find it wasn't save for some reason. Raging!!]

Here is the gist of the post:

    Lubo...

It seems that we sing from the same song sheet.

We need to remove the influence that a referee can have on the game by scoring plenty of goals, like today, but we know that this will not always be possible. In the games where there is nothing between us and our opposition, or little, a single decision can determine the outcome of the game.

I feel that Rangers are a more organised outfit than they were last season, and have a better base (ie the 1st half of the season) as the first six months of last year was a disaster for them.

The past month has seen us stregthen the squad immensely, while they have gone backwards.

It's going to be tough this year, as we are up against more than just Rangers. Some may say that this is the case every year, which may be true, but this is NOW and surely some sort of complaint should be lodged about Aiden's yellow, Jan's penalty denial, and Young's lack of a dismissal.

Hate to bang on, on a great day like this, but have been really irritated by the performance of officialdom today.

I'm sure you understand my friend!

Anyway, rant over. Keep the faith!

    o1 bhoy,

I was thinking about how Larsson played with a stony faced stoicism, until he scored, and how that must have unnerved his opponents.

They couldn't read his thoughts or attempt to wind him up. I think Skippy and Brown in particular would do well to study that side of his game.

Although, in fairness, both lads today showed no signs of dissent and in fact it was Brown who eventually led Aiden away from the ref.

There is no organised campaign against us this season because there is no need for one. The Establishment know what is required and they will do their best to deliver, without the need of a smoking gun or a blueprint of "How to Hand Walter the Title".

    Porridgeandbananas,

Your question earlier on how long would it take Aiden to reach Jinky's level?

The answer to that is ,he will never be at Jinky's level. JJ was a one off. Aiden is a one off and Charlie Tully was a one off.

Three special talents that deserve their own niche in football folklore. Of course, Aiden still has it all to do, as yet,but he is on the right road. Let's hope he completes it with us.

These three players have in my time of watching Celtic, added magic to the talent that so many of our players possessed.

I was neither at the game, nor watched it (even the highlights), merely listening to the radio, but even when Celtic were 0-0 and vulnerable, the delight on the voices of Billy Dodds (who is a fabulous summariser) and Richard Begg who were actually commentating on a game with many periods of great football told me that Celtic were going to win and play well even though there were chances for both sides.
What pleased me most was that Billy Dodds mentioned on several occasions the team-work on display and that the players were prepared to meet the opposition physically just as O'Neill's sides did by default.
This was exactly as I had seen during the Kilmarnock game last week and was delighted to see that not only did they play as well but that they would improve on this display was very pleasing and gives great optimism for the Barcelona tie.

    £650k for Scott McDonald.

Think our manager deserves a lot credit for that one. Considering what happened on Black Sunday and what happened at Southampton it would have been very easy for WGS to look for someone else. No many managers would have took that decision.

Wee McDonald is certainly making sure that the chance presented to him will be grasped.

surely you're not going to ignore the (subtle) language violation at 15.20 by MNCELT?

Does WGS need to cause controversy every time he visits Pittodrie? How many games will he miss if the 4th official picked up on this? (It goes without saying that the ref will have missed it). On today's showing he would have missed it even if he was the recipient.

Keevins commented that it was "beyond human comprehension" - that's the failure of the ref to give the award for the rugby tackle on JVOH - not that WGS did what MNCELT alleges took place.

After the game I saw the Huns "highlights". The first goal was yet another blatant MIB intervention to halt 3 in a row.

no wonder we're singing "that's why we're paraniod!!

You asked if any other Celtic debutant had scored with his first kick of the ball.

I don't believe so, certainly not in modern times.

One Celtic player did score with his first touch on his Scotland debut(in fact his only international appearance.)

It was Joe Craig v Sweden at Hampden in 1977.

A simple wee header from 5 yards it was too.

I thought Celtic were magnificent today.

It looks like we are coming good just at the right time and we are playing with a wee bit of attitude too which was missing before in my opinion.

Special mention must go to Aiden McGeady.

He really is a fantastic talent, home grown too.

I was at the game today and haven't seen any footage however surely we were denied a stonewall penalty when Jan was manhandled in the box?

I also believe that there is an agenda against Aiden.

He is being booked every week.

Someone posted earlier that Barry Ferguson had been booked once this season.

I believe that that caution was in the League Cup.

I find it incredible that a combative midfield player such as Ferguson hasn't picked up a single booking in 23 League matches.

On second thoughts, no, I don't find it incredible.

I was really impressed by Robson mentality today, he could quite easily have stepped aside at tjhe free kick but he was adamant that it was his ball. He'll do for me.

I thought the ref at Tannadice on Boxing Day was fair and surprisingly called the ball to hand on Balde corrrectly as no penalty. I didnt think it was controversial but I can see where you are coming from about his future participation in Celtic games.

I watched the game on Channel67 and, at half-time with a healthy 3-0 lead, I couldn't believe some of the emails coming in from around the world. Individual players were being slaughtered and especially JVOH. One viewer even went as far as to say, "He never scores" which is factually incorrect, especially in recent weeks. Hinkel also came in for some stick and well done to Paul Cuddihy for his stout defence of both players. Some people are just never happy.

Even on CQN, some posters are very critical of the defence. We won 5-1 for pity's sake. Even in the hay days of Jock Stein and the Lisbon Lions, Celtic let is some daft goals, but when you are already 4, 5 or 6 up, who cares? Remember these results in the late 60s?

Couldnt disagree on gomis. Dont usually notice opposition players too much unless they are bald, thugs, ex huns or if they play well against us. I think gomis has played well when I have seen him.

Ignatius : I think Big Jock's philosophy was always if they score 3 we will score more and we always win.If it was good enough for him, it is good enough for me.
I would also say that the defence these days is frugal compared to the good old days of "the sieve" with stalwarts such as Frank Munro, Willie Garner and, to a slightly lesser degree, Tom McAdam.
I dont usually criticise players while they are actually playing but I think after they have retired/left then it is fair game. However I also have to recognise that any player who pulls on the hoops does his best. I would hope that had it been me, supporters would not have been too harsh about my poor performance.
I am not going to make any jokes about asking for the same understanding from mrs hamstring.

The 3 brother in the covern was Don McVicar ... they seemed to be taking a lot of notes ... nothing like putting pressure on a ref ... who complained to merit this???

If you are still around, I know this was touched on before but might Aiden be permitted to change his shirt number next season?
I recall some contractual problems on the subject of players changing numbers which I can understand.

A wee poem with some pertinence, I think, to our conversation.

"O HEART, be at peace, because
Nor knave nor dolt can break
    What's not for their applause,
    The folly that man does
Or must suffer, if he woos
A proud woman not kindred of his soul.
I am content to follow to its source
    Every event in action or in thought;
Measure the lot; forgive myself the lot!
When such as I cast out remorse
So great a sweetness flows into the breast
We must laugh and we must sing,
    We are blest by everything,
Everything we look upon is blest.

Glad to hear your better news StevieS.

McGeady´s twist and turn at the fourth goal was sublime.

The Irish crowd at Crowe park really took to Aiden the other night, applauding his touches and admiring his daring, soccer devilry. That warmth and affection must have given him a huge boost going into today´s match. As American singer Jackie Wilson used to belt out, "To be loved, to be loved, Oh what a feeling to be loved"

Shine on Aiden...and Scotty and Skoosh and Hartley and Artur and Naka and ......

A top UEFA Champions League level referee deemed this challenge (from 0:10 point) a penalty.

...but an SPL referee didn't think this challenge (from 3:00 point) was worthy of any punishment whatsoever!

    That's why we're paranoid!

a couple of difficult away games at Kilmarnock and Tynecastle
and a tricky encounter at home to the mighty Gretna,
could March 1st see us top of the SPL?

Excuse my ignorance, but could anyone explain why we are not playing motherwell this wednesday evening, we have a free midweek slot why is is not being used, or isn it part of the SPhell masterplan to keep our fixture list as congested as possible around the european games.
