Catalan authorities react to Rangers visit with tough measures for Celtic visit

“Barcelona's city council regulation was not put into practice against the 10,000 Glasgow Rangers fans who were strolling the city last Tuesday and Wednesday to prevent things getting out of hand. Rangers fans were allowed to drink on the street and to urinate anywhere.”
El País

“The amount of beer and any other alcoholic drinks consumed by the Rangers fans forced them to urinate, any place and time seemed fine to carry out such action. There was a dense carpet of rubbish around that comprised mainly cans and bottles.”
La Vanguardia

“On Tuesday night, the heart of the city became an immense carpet of cans of beer and other rubbish. There were three people injured by knives as a result of a row between themselves.”
El País

“The mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, affirmed yesterday that even though the security measures implemented last Thursday against Glasgow Rangers fans, who were drinking and urinating on the street, prevented public disorder, new measures will have to be taken so hooligans will not invade the city in the future.

Hereu explained yesterday that the security and the city circulation departments of the council are negotiating with different sport organizations (UEFA and clubs) and the Ministry of Home Affairs of Catalonia in order to look for alternatives that will put all the football fans "that visit Barcelona and come to make bad use of the city" in isolated areas.”
El Mundo

“Barcelona has been the scenario for a regrettable spectacle. Thousands of Scottish people were camping in the centre of the city drinking quickly pints of beer and urinating on the streets with complete impunity. This has become a degrading image that makes us despise the people who have been disrespectful to us.”
La Vanguardia

“The large amount of hooligans from Glasgow Rangers in Barcelona has produced a new political debate in order to save the centre of the city from the progressive overcrowding.”
El Periódico

“A supermarket in La Rambla was left without the hooligans' favourite drink for two consecutive days and barrels of beer were emptied very quickly in bars in the centre of Barcelona. Beer was almost more wanted than a ticket for the match for the 20,000 hooligans who came to Barcelona.”
Qué! Barcelona

The above extracts are just a sample of the debate in the Catalonian media following Rangers visit in November, after which, Stuttgart fans, who have an exemplary international reputation, were on the receiving end of a backlash from police and a local authority keen to take effective action.

To make matters worse, local elections are being held in Catalonia the week Celtic play there, giving the authorities every incentive to show their mettle.

Whatever your experiences from recent visits with Celtic to Barcelona, our trip next month will take place under very different policing and security procedures.

Celtic and FC Barcelona will make efforts to assure the authorities that Celtic fans are a different proposition to Rangers fans, but pretty much every visiting team to Barcelona are a different proposition to Rangers fans, however, this did not help lower the state of alert for the visit of Stuttgart.

I really don’t know how to prepare to follow Rangers fans into Barcelona, as I expect many potentially contentious actions will be taken after participating in judgement-altering libations, but being forewarned of the likely reception is as good a place to start as any.

On a slightly cheerier note, I hear Aiden McGeady will start for the Republic of Ireland against Brazil tonight, good luck to the Green Garrincha.

This has been playing on my mind since the draw was made. We are in danger of being tarred with the same brush, although I have seen lots of comment from ordinary citizens in Barcelona drawing distinctions between us and Rangers. This will have no bearing on how the officials treat the Celtic fans.

It is illegal to drink alcohol in an open-air public space.

Just after Rangers made the impression they did on the city, Stuttgart were in town. The number of Stuttgart fans fined on the spot for "public order offences" (mostly of the drinking and bladder-relieving variety) was in the three figures, even though there was absolutely no bother.

If Celtic fans face a similar number of fines, there are people in Scotland who will look to make a great deal of it at our expense.

    People, play wi the heid.

We've had two trips to Barca in the last few years and had a marvellous time. Apart from the interminable return wait at the airport.

We have stuck to whatever rules were laid down, and got on famously with the local people.

We played football with the polis and sang and drank with les coules.

We drank as if there was no tomorrow and when the polis told us in Sagrada Familia, Las Ramblas, Plaza Joaquim Xirau, or wherever to move on or go indoors, we generally followed their instructions.

If the rules or atmosphere have changed, we will adapt, thrive and still come away with some great memories, leave some great memories behind, and hopefully also get a result.

We KNOW how others have conducted themselves, we KNOW how they may have caused suspicion and wariness, but we DON'T need to compare ourselves with them, we DON'T behave as we do because we want to show them up, we DON'T need lectures.

We are who WE are, not some volte face of the Rangers support.

In some parts of the world we have been treated like muck and still left laughter and new found friends behind. See Donetsk, See Moscow, See Vigo.

As you can tell I am not enamoured with this false one-upmanship and nervous distrust of our fantastic travelling support.

My greatest memory of the Celtic Support in Barcelona, was standing in the Michael Collin's bar, the night before the 0-0 game.

The bar, just across the square from Gaudi's folly, was fairly jam packed with half Celtic and Half Catalan/Spanish.

A coach drew up outside and the front door of the bar opened and in thronged the travelling masses of the Saltmarket and I think Whistlin kirk CSCs.

In unison, the massed choirs, to the utter amazement of our hosts, broke into 'Viva La Quinta Brigada'.

Everything was once again well with the world (except for the prices in that bar - pseudo Irish bars are the worst rip off's in the world).

I expect it will be the same again!

Lets hope the Spanish Polis don't over react when we visit there.

On Aiden playing against Brazil tonight, the last few days I have been listening to TALKsport radio station and I have heard about 3 Irish pundits talking about the Ireland game tonight. Now my hearing now is not the greatest(too many Kerrang style concerts, Lemmy's speaker almost blew the wax out of my ears) One guy's name I didn't get, another's last name was Lennon but not our old ginger captain and the other was Ray 'Have you ever played the proffessional game' Houghton, each one of them was asked who are the up and coming players in the Ireland squad? each one of them gave about 5 names of players to look out for in the Ireland squad and not one of them mentioned our own Aideninho. All of them were full of praise for the Reading pair Dolye and Hunt (come on they are playing for a team that could be relegated), Do the Irish Pundits not rate Aiden? Has he not played well for Ireland? or is it the fact he plays in Scotland so they don't rate him.

I was shocked that not one of the three pundits mentioned Aidens name, obviously they don't rate him. Can any of our posters in Ireland share some light into this, are these three just idiots or is their opinion or lack of opinion on Aiden is the norm for media pundits in Ireland.

Stand up for Aiden Player of the Year elect.

I will be going to the game, although not drinking due to Lent, I cant see why volunteers cannot be rounded up to clean up after the idiots that cannot clean up after themselves. With regards to public conveniences, I found this to be lacking on my last visit to Barcelona - maybe the club could hire a few and placed within a central area.

I can relate to your previous experiences, of course, but we ignore the political fall-out from this particular Rangers visit at our peril.

City hall took a lot of stick and, as Paul says, with local elections coming up, some politicians may see vote-winning potential in giving Celtic fans a hard time.

    Narrowboat,

There is definitely an anti- Celtic agenda in the Irish media.

One could speculate all day as to the reasons, but as we all know, if you don't like something or someone, you will find plenty of reasons to do this.

TV and radio in Ireland is a cosy wee cartel, with the same tired old pundits doing the rounds. They are fattened on a diet of EPL and consider themselves wannabee Sky people.

Whether we like it or not, any sort of negative publicity attached to Scottish football, i.e. the conduct of the Ibrox club and fans, reflects on us, lazy punditry, if you like.

To praise or promote Scottish football would be seen to be hicky.

Aiden has played a few games for Ireland where he has been ignored by his teammates or when he has been given the ball, nobody supports his runs and he is left to fend for himself. If you recall Alan Thompson's 60 minutes for England and the way he was ignored on the field, then something similar occurred with Aiden.

You would think that Setanta Ireland would be different. But no, they have gone all EPL now and whenever they cover a Celtic CL tie, they virtually insult the efforts of our club. No consideration of our financial status in comparison to the Barcas and Milans of this world and any success we get is patronisingly and grudgingly acknowledged.

There is also the perception amongst the myopic media that somehow Celtic are affiliated to Irish Republicanism and that is a big no-no amongst the Dublin chattering classes.

There you are, Narrowboat, you pays your money and you makes your choice, but one thing for sure, for whatever reason, there is an anti-Celtic agenda in the Irish media.

And it sure p....s me off, as I did not expect to find it here and in some ways it is harder to take than the Scottish variety. At least you know what is behind theirs.

I think the club should be doing all it can beforehand to let the authorities in Barca know what the Celtic support is all about, i.e. Seville etc and the awards we have won. Although we have a great reputation abroad, things always have the potential to get out of hand. Imagine some over zealous police officers who decide to wade in with batons because of fans singing their heads off. I don`t think we should ever be complacent in these matters, therefore fans going (of which I am one) should be warned as much as possible, and although this site is doing just that, not everybody reads it. As for the press in this country, I think they would much prefer to report on us in a negative manner than a positive one.(take `I think out of the last bit) Especially after the bad press the ugly team playing ugly football recieved, although there wasn`t much of that went on in this country. It was just the bad Catalonian press, obviously made up most, no, all of it.

    Narrowboat Tim,
From my experience of listening to 'experts' in Ireland they are being paid good money to give their opinions on the game in general.

As pundits they are miles more astute and entertaining than their UK counterparts. If there was RTE/TV3 coverage and BBC?ITV coverage of a game its RTE/TV3 every time for me.

However they all have one thing in common. Their very existence as pundits is entirely due to the popularity of the EPL in Ireland.

They promote this at every opportunity. Granted it is a good product. Sadly their knowledge of Scottish football is zero. Our league is rated alongside the leagues of Belgium, Norway, Denmark etc.

There is also an anti Celtic vibe (agenda?) amoungst the media in Ireland. Another poster articulated this a lot better than I could but to paraphrase, the media feel slightly uncomfortable when it comes to our beloved club.

There are politics and social issues that are linked to our club. that the well healed celebrity media would rather be distanced from.

In my opinion you are correct when you say that Aiden is not rated here.

They are very hard on him and it was only a few games ago that the panel unanimously (sp?) agreed that Aiden was playing well.

I think they are just beginning to see in Aiden what we have seen this season. He is about to explode onto the irish international pysche.

It is ironic though that it is not only some of us who are harsh on Aiden. I am looking forward to him destroying the Brazilians tonight.

IMO he has lacked confidence with Ireland but he is gradually becoming a first pick and on merit.

Thats my tuppence worth. Got to go.

    Thom The Tim,
you're right about the pundits not giving Celtic any credit when playing the "big boys" in europe, especially that big guy on Setanta "Pat Dolan", I think...grrr!

Surprisingly Eamon Dunphy did say that Aiden had come on leaps and bounds when he was reviewing the last ROI game, something along the lines of he is vastly improved and that it's down to the work of GS and the coaches at Celtic, which was a shock, though in fairness, there weren't many players to praise that night

Just not sure it's an anti-Celtic though, I reckon it's more pro-EPL and that they like to be seen in the supposed reflected glory of the "Best League in the World(tm)"

I know that in the Tribune on sunday's there's pages and pages devoted to the EPL, but you do always get a summary of the Celtic game, and that's it for the SPL. Plus on CL weeks the more often than not have a feature on GS/Aiden/Celtic's chances.

    Changing times in Barcelona

The law changed in 2006. If you use the street as a toilet, the fine can be as much as 750 euros.

The image in this article is of a Stuttgart fan being fined in December for drinking in the street.

It's hard to know why the authorities took the stance they did in November, but it was roundly criticised. When poor Stuttgart turned up, they got a bit of the backlash, but the same thing could happen to us.

Rangers took circa 20,000 PEEPUL, NOT to see the game, but in some misconceived odyssey to mark one of the lowest points in their collective history.

The shame of that day all those years ago was relived and to great extent recreated by the 16,000 or so who did not have tickets, had no interest in the game and believed all the hype that somehow the Catalan people held them in some awe and reverence.

In reality the marauders not only reminded those who had been around all those years ago of the sad reality of their heartless pillaging, but also confirmed to the local descendents the true nature of the elitist tedencies of drunks, scabs, and the skid-marks on the underpants of society who are the life-blood that club.

We are probably taking 5 - 6000 supporters, most of whom will have tickets and actually WANT to see the game.

As for putting warnings out on this site or any other!

The vast majority of Celtic supporters will NOT access the internet for info on the club.

Of those who do, the vast majority will not be going to the game.

Of those who are, the vast majority will be well behaved, respectful and law-abiding.

Those who aren't, will unfortunately always be like that and will probably revel in their notoriety.

No amount of warnings will do anything for them and frankly if they get battered senseless I would have few moments of angst.

For instance, In Munich they closed the Marienplatz because there was a political rally.

The police surrounded the support and guided them to another square about a mile or so away.

The Support, who had been drinking most of the day broke into a chorus or two of 'we shall not be moved' but did so as they walked to the designated place.

    NO TROUBLE!

Tell everyone to tidy up by all means, but we really do need to recognise that the only way of stopping all hi-jinks and /or trouble (even some Seville and Espanyol fans got arrested in Glasgow) is for no-one to travel.

Other than that, I suggest that everyone goes to local bars and has a laugh with the Catalans.

We'll all come back better for it, and once again re-inforce the historic reputation we have generated.

Just wait till we hit Red Square in May!!

I believe that Neil and Vladimir Ilyich are related from way back!

whilst i enjoyed estadio's post which was inspiring and eloquent as usual, i'm with celticfirst and paul67.
the climate has changed a bit. not only with the rangers fans but also the fallout of the hamilton racism incident could affect things ( or not). this is mainly the press doing point scoring but...
anyway i was in barca a few years ago for the uefa cup game and whilst there was a great atmosphere there where many incidents of what would now be classed as unacceptable behaviour, drinking in the streets, leaving a mess, urinating, jumping in fountains etc
i live in spain, though not barca, and know the police are usually quite happy to lay into football fans from abroad or local, for any reason or no reason as i have seen with my own eyes. it's not pretty and i wouldn't like to hear of a celtic fan suffering in that way. so just be careful, heed the warnings and have a good time, and above all remember you are representing celtic, the club with the greatest fans in the world. it's a great opportunity to enhance that reputation!

    The Narrowbhoat Tim,
Sorry I got your name wrong. Very sloppy of me.

I actually think Pat Dolan speaks very passionately about Celtic.
In fact he seems very comfortablr talking about CFC whereas the others shift in their seat and squirm if they have to speak about the club. (especially that Rangers loving tube Andy Townsend)

He cant understand why we are not bigger than we are. He thinks we are being conned by our board in that we are not getting enough money to spend on players. Personally I think he is just misguided plain and simple.

He needs a course of Happy clapping pills to see that we exist in the SPL therefor we cannot spend as much as the EPL teams. He has a blank spot here.

I was glad you mentioned Aiden being ignored on the field. This is something I have noticed time and time again. I thought it was just me actually so Im glad you brought it up.

It is perhaps no coincidence that Aiden is playing better now Stan has left. It was like the team were given instructions NOT to bring Aiden into the game.
The ball always seems to be played up the opposite side of the field to where Aiden is located.

Last time around young guy from reading comes on as a sub (not doyle, the other one) and all of a sudden they cant get the ball to him fast enough!

    I don't disagree with you.

My disagreement is with those who are saying that we need to be right for the wrong reasons.

    "Let's be better than them".

No! Let's show respect wherever we go, because it is the right thing to do.

I am sick of Celtic, Celtic sites, and Celtic associations grouping us, even by default, with them.

Thet are not the dark side of the moon to our visible side, they are not the sinister 'tails' to our 'heads', their 'history or lack thereof' is not the sick twin to our healthy offspring, and our immediate and long-term future is not tied by some mysterious umbilical cord to there descent into oblivion.

I am not defined by them!

We will stand or fall by our own principles or lack of them and (apart from the continuing adventure of the Fanseni which I have promised Paradise Found) I will now ignore them for the rest of this season!!

    Hail hail

    Gordon @ 21.06,

For about 4 or 5 years we were the best team in Europe. And we could play.

*damn right we were, if we had won in Milan we would have gone on to be a dynasty.

Still couldn't face watching the replay last night.

*never have. This was my first and only trip abroad tae see Celtic and since I’ve been gone over 30 years it isnae surprising.

3 years previously I had a ticket for Lisbon however when a young Mrs. TT told me she was with child I just couldnae justify going so I gave my ticket tae my cousin.

About 18 months later we emigrated for the first time, Mrs. TT got preggers again but it was a very bad pregnancy and the oul Doctor over here a craggy oul Scot called Cruikshank told here the baby widnae survive the term so I dispatched her back hame AQAP, that baby who was eventually born in Duntocher Maternity is right now on holiday in Japan as she’s teaching in South Korea.

A wee Celtic connection here, Dr Cruickshank had a young intern fae hame over working with him; he would later return and become the Celtic team doctor.

Another wee connection, Dr. Willie Kivlichan, who played for both us and them has a grandson who also practices medicine over here

Anyway, we came back hame and bought a wee hoose in Alexandria, a few months later I’m on the promise of a ticket tae Leeds, unfortunately at the last minute it falls through, that night I listened tae the gemme in my oul room up the Haldane.

It was a nice night as we made our way back down the Vale and Mrs. TT recognizing my disappointment on missing the gemme said that if we got tae the final then she’d pay my way, think she had got a big rebate as we returned tae the country late in the year before. So that’s how I ended up in Milan.

My auld Dad who was also in Milan still says that those horns took him by surprise but he really enjoyed the Feijenoord supporters' company. Plenty of drink was taken.

*I thought they were great tae, friendliest fans I ever met; found it hard to accept the hooliganism the emanated from that part of the world years later.

Don't get me on about the strike; my Dad reckons that the Italians should never have been allowed to stage anything like the European Final again; since they weren't interested because none of their teams were playing.....Chaos doesn't begin to describe the situation.

*I think they (Milan that is) were banned from hosting a final for a few years, totally agree they wurnae interested except tae see us lose as we were the victors 3 years earlier against Inter.

Totally unorganized and I always thought that no programmes were printed although I did hear that a few were but not too many.

But the biggest disappointment for me is that the final was originally scheduled for Rome but was changed almost at the last minute.

“The famous Glasgow Celtic took a holiday to Rome” would have been well aired if it hadn’t.

Estadio, you make a valid point, as always, that we should do the right things for the right reasons however, I think that there could be a small minority within our fan base who do need the extra motivation that "Let's be better than them" provides.

It is similar to the travelling Scottish support in the 80s onwards; as English football hooliganism worsened to an extent that their national team, through its knuckle-dragging Column 88-alikes became the pariah of international football, the Scottish support part milked it/part learned from it and became, with the Irish fans, “must haves” at international tournaments. (Pity the team hadn’t read that script). It may not have been for wholly morally pure and decent reasons that the Tartan Army became so cuddly (if sometimes embarrassingly so) but I doubt if that cuddliness would have been achieved without the thoroughly unpleasant behaviour that was rife when England travelled...or indeed played at home.

I agree absolutely that the vast majority of travelling Celtic fans will behave responsibly and with all due respect for their hosts, but I'd settle for impeccable behaviour even it comes about in part because some simply wish to deliver a GIRUY to that team with whom, I agree, we do not share an umbilical cord.

You're right that we are not defined by them, but there are simple facts regarding the situation in Barcelona that we cannot ignore.

In 2004 and in 2005, the police approached bhoys drinking in public and asked them to move indoors.

In 2008 they will do that too, but quite possibly not until they've slapped a fine on them.

All Paul's doing here is try to raise awareness.

Paul, far be it from me to pick a fight with Estadio, whom I hold in the highest esteem, as you and he both know.

I thought his posts were very interesting because the implication of them was that if the Celtic support does what it always does, we'll win friends and have a great time as usual.

As you suggest, things have changed and we run the risk of having many fans fined. If we can help avoid this by spreading the word, we have a moral obligation to do so.

    Narrowboat et al,

Regarding how Celtic are perceived in Ireland:

I agree that there is an anti-Celtic agenda. I have always been somewhat bewildered at the RTE's choice of Pundits which has included Trevor Stephen and Graham Souness!

Coupled with this is the fact that it is only on very rare occasions,if ever, that they choose to show Celtic CL Games. However, only this season, they broadcast one of Ranger's CL games!

There have been numerous recent articles in the Irish press slating Celtics support, most notably Ewan Fanning (Irish Independent??) when he described Celtic Park as being full of 60,000 drunks!! I think his brother ran another anti Celtic article soon after. They claimed that Celtic supporters, Irish ones in particular, are little more than IRA\Republican apologists who use Celtic FC as a way to channel their beliefs.

I remember watching a recording of the UEFA cup final and Jim Beglin (who??) could not have been more condescending and critical of Celtics players and performance.

Eamonn Dunphy and John Giles are not even worth listening to. If Dunphy is not drunk the he is working towards his own agenda. He came on air during the 2002 World cup wearing Cameroon Colours during Irelands group match v Cameroon- this in protest to the Roy Keane debacle!!

Giles thinks that Cantona and Drogba to mention but a few are over rated. The man has such as dislike for all things Man Utd it is unbelievabe, (I have no little dislike for that club myself), but lets try and give an unbiased analysis!!

There certainly is something going on, so for me it is not surprising how Aiden has been treated so far, but you can bet your bottom dollar that if he plays for Ireland the way we all know he can play, they will not be too long changing their tune!!

While I never watch RTE, I am not surprised to hear the somments being made. People like Dunphy and Giles played in England (in Giles' case very successfully). They proably have adopted the English attitude of dismissing the SPL (and we also represent to them something they disdain). In Giles' case, too, he probably hates Man U because they gave him his jotters and we deprived him of his only chance to ever win the Big One.

I agree with Estadio, in so far as I would love us to treat others with respect because they are, by their very humanity, demanding of that respect.

However, in reality, if a discussion like this makes one more person behave in a reasonable manner then it will be worth it.

    Hail Hail

Again thanks for the insight on how we are perceived in Ireland. It reminds me of the time I was with an Irish Liverpool Supporting freind in a pub watching the Celtic playing Liverpool (1997), my friend was very pro a united Ireland, I was winding him up about how I was supporting the team who supporters were waving the TriColour singing the Soldier Song and he was supporting the team who fans were waving the Union Jack which he hated. Needless to say he did not see the irony of it all.

On another matter, I see the Flying Pig is now the Goalie coach for Clyde ( I bet Radio Snyde is dying to sponser them now)along with Mad Bomber Brown, all they need is Davie Dodds to join them and they will be the ugliest Trio since Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale formed the Gorgon Sisters to coach the Argonaughts. Are Clyde going to change their nickname to the Bully Wee Frees?

    Relegate Clyde

    Sack Duffield

    Sack the RTE

    Sack Giles

    Sack Giles and Dunphy

    Sack Giles, Giles and Fripp

I remember Dunphy on RTE during our run to Seville, he started off by calling Big John Hartson a "pub player" and after the Blackburn game at Celtic Park he offered the opinion that we would lose at least 5 in England.
Oh how I enjoyed him squirm every couple off weeks after that.

The roots of our bad press in Ireland lie in ignorance - of any football but English - and class - all the football-related journos are nice young men from Dublin or the boonies, and to them Celtic jerseys mean poor, rough boys from North Dublin. All the top people who follow football in Ireland support Man U or Liverpool or Sunderland (vide the website of The Guardian).
