Celtic could test if SPL favor Rangers

Celtic are soon scheduled to play three games in six days, Inverness at home, Hibernian away and the Champions League game away to Barcelona.

If they request a postponement of the Hibs game to allow them to prepare for their Champions League knock out tie (just as Rangers requested a postponement of their Gretna game in an earlier round), the SPL will face an interesting test of their even handedness.

Celtic are two games behind where they should be in the league programme, but with the postponed Motherwell game now taking place on 15 March, there is only one game left to rearrange, against Rangers, who are likely to be unavailable until late March.

We have no game on the midweeks of 11/12 March and 18/19 March, allowing time to reschedule the Hibs game and to play a potential Scottish Cup replay if the Aberdeen game on 8 March ends in a draw.

As the schedule sits at the moment, there is no way Celtic will be at their freshest at the Nou Camp. If we are taking this game seriously, and 10,000 of appear to be taking it seriously enough to travel, we must request a postponement of the Hibs game.

We would then find out if there is one rule for Celtic and a different rule for others.

While I do think we should press for a postponement of the Hibs game, I am more concerned about how we conduct ourselves in Barcelona. There is no room for complacency. We should listen carefully to the likes of Celtic-First, who sounds to me as if he has lived in Spain. He knows what is and is not acceptable behaviour. We know all too well that the old media will be hoping against hope that they can splurge damning headlines about us. Enjoy yourselves, lhads but caw canny.

I see the game against Dun Utd has been postponed for the CIS cup. Can we not play Motherwell then as their game with the Huns is also postponed ?.

  • At 07/02/08 13:14, Blogger BlantyreKev said…

    Sorry Paul, can't agree

    1. Factually.
We have 2 games to rearrange beyond the Motherwell game. Rangers and Dundee United (that has been vacated because of their involvement in the cup final and allows us to play Motherwell)

That leaves jsut one potential free midweek and that would disappear with a replay.

    2. Other considerations
Hibs have schedule problems of their own that depend on Rangers progression in the Uefa cup. If Rangers progress then the Scottish Cup QF weekend will have to accommodate their 5th round replay tie with Rangers and the QF with St Johnstone or Partick reverts to the mideweek, ruling it out as a potential date for the Celtic-Hibs game should Hibs progress.

    3. Circumstance
The postponement of Rangers game with Lyon came at a time of no fixture congestion in Scotland. Rangers have added to it and it would only be right that the SPL learn from, and admit to, the mistake and refuse under the current conditions.

    4.Hibs
It's not a shoey in that they would agree (nor would I) since there is more matchday income generated on a weekend. Though clearly we could test the SPL's willingness to put it to Hibs at all.

Sorry mate, this one, for me, falsely puts the SPL under pressure. Choose the moment. I don't think this is it. Too easy for them to shout and contend paranoia, undermining the case in general.

    Hail Hail

I believe it is wrong to ask for postponements, should we ask before every CL game ?

Gretna were too small to refuse Rangers, Hibs will probably tell us where to go.

  • At 07/02/08 13:27, Blogger Stuart said…

I'm totally against this. I think the main benefit would be tweaking the nose of the SPL, which may be fun, but is unlikely to benefit us down the line.

Rangers scored a huge own goal when they postponed their Gretna fixture. It did them no good against Lyon, and now they'll probably have to play on a Tuesday and a Thursday some week to catch up. Deferring fixtures demeans a league that really doesn't need demeaning any further. Who's going to sponsor the 'unless we get a better offer' SPL? Why would Setanta invest more if they're continually screwed around?

We are Celtic. We're better than this, we have a big strong squad of hungry young players. They don't need this artificial pamperring. Can you see Barca requesting a La Liga postponement before we arrive? Who do you want to be like; Barcelona, or Rangers?

Incidentally, the real solution is to have less league games. The fixture calander should not contain weeknight matches before the start of the season. Let's keep weeknights for Europe, cup replays and (unavoidably) rearranged fixtures.

    BlantyreK,

I was just coming to the same conclusions when I was unfortunately distracted by the news that the Japanese are planning to launch an origami plane from the spacestation, towards earth.

It is in attempt to develop lightweight travel capability in space.

The problem seems to be that since the earth is 70% covered in water, they can't be sure of retrieving it all never mind if it alights on land! I suppose it is a bit like launching one in the class at Helen Rafferty, but finding that a gust of wind from Paul Wladysiuk's backside has diverted up Miss O'Donnel's cloak! (Not an entirely unpleasant sensation if I remember the slight whimper and puckering of the lips correctly)!!

Anyway, they've decided to put a return address on it in multiple languages stating 'if you find this then please return to Japan'.

If they can make this work, I think that you should work with them in solving the fixture 'problem'.

I wonder if they are going to try and bend the nose a little to make it look like Concorde?

BTW another site is reporting that I am about to be stung for £55 for the Barca away game. Anyone else got prior info?

My thoughts on the postponement stuff is that we should play. If we use the squad well, we should avoid fatigue.

Contact injuries can happen any time, in training or wherever. Santiago Cañizares and David Batty are just two that missed out on major international tournaments because of accidents in the home: one with a bottle of eau de toilette, the other with a wean.

The eau de toilette one wasn't David Batty.

I have to agree with BlantyreKev, as the season constricts towards its end so do the opportunities for rearranged games. The SFA could easily argue (if they feel like arguing at all) that the Rangers v Gretna game was postponed at a time when the season was laid out before them. They could also quite rightly claim it would have been impossible to legislate for the cancelled games following Phil O’Donnell’s death, one of which Celtic requested and was granted. I wouldn’t want anyone trying to claim we were using such circumstances simply to prove a point.

I don’t know why we’re still concerned about the Gretna cancellation anyway, I was happy it was given at the time and I’m even happier now.

In an effort to expand the influence of the EPL, they are proposing to extend the season by 10 games. These matches are to be played in countries throughout the world, with individual cities bidding for the rights to stage the games.
These are the type of business situations that would be open to us if we could break free from the narrow minded SPL.
The future of football is definetly going to be bigger then the confines of national borders.

Then again a rather - big - wee part of the rebellious underdog in me, who never says please to those beneath contempt, says: bugger it, play out the fixtures as they stand, for at least against Barcelona we’ll play a real football team with a real referee; with an impartial watching world. Not keen on asking for a postponement for the same reason I pointed the finger at Rankers. The sides we play against in Europe dont get league games postponed before Euro ties. Let THEM ask for special favours we should get on with it. While showing up any bias would be good, I think we will have plenty more opportunities, sadly. It would be interesting to test the water and see if having the game postponed is an option by simply asking if a posponement would be granted but not necessarily having the game put off. If permission was denied by the SPL then we would know what they're up to. If permission is granted to postpone the game then it would leave Celtic able to call the shots and decide whther or not to take up the chance of a free weekend.

Then again, look what happened to the last Scottish team who were granted a postponement before a vital European tie.

I personally think we shouldn't. It's all hypothetical I know, but say we get on a good run (which after Saturday looks likely) with everyone on top of their game with so much competition for places. The 11 that take the field v Hibs will be bursting a gut to make sure they are selected in Barca. A win v Hibs and our tails are up, going to the Nou Camp in confidence (assuming we got a good result at Celtic Park).

Bring on the Spaniards by the score.... and the Scots as well!

    From the BBC website:

    Preston swoop for Polish keeper
Preston have signed Polish international goalkeeper Grzegorz Szamotulski on a six-month contract.
The 33-year-old was available as a free agent after finishing a six-month contract with Dundee United in January.

Szamotulski, who has 13 caps for his country, played 23 times for the Tangerines this season after joining from Austria's Sturm Graz in July.

He will provide cover and competition for Andrew Lonnergan and will be in the squad to face Coventry at the weekend.

I meant to add as well regarding BBJ. I haven't read through the posts but my first memory of him with us was his debut at Kilamrnock. I think Lubo or Petta got injured early on and the big man is brought on.

2 minutes later he has absolutely demolished a Kilamrnock defender down at the corner flag right in front of us. He really should have walked but somehow escaped with a booking!

Fantastic striker, you won't see many, if any, like him any more. he simply would have been discarded nowadays due to him not being an 'athlete'. You also won't find many who enjoyed skelping the huns as much as he did! His goal at Anfield will be remembered forever. You just wonder the difference he would have made in Seville. Mourinho for one has admitted he was terrified of the big man playing and his injury was a major factor in Porto winning the UEFA Cup.

    Enjoy your retirement big man!

As porridge stated, we have a strong squad who should be gut-busting to play in Barca and as has been demonstrated, having games postponed can be a bum biter.

I also happen to be of the opinion that we should ALWAYS be bigger, better and of higher moral standards than TFOD. Therefore, we don't go begging for a postponement, but as someone before mentioned, a suitably barbed comment from the SSM, as to why we WON'T ask for postponement will get the point across nice and clear.

    BBJ,

thanks for all those goals big man, especially all those against TFOD which you took obvious great delight in - GIRFUY if ever there were any and there were plenty- and the other big games, Anfield being right up there.

For me all it will achieve is to give the chance for the radio phone morons (no offence terry) to debate the issue for weeks and give them even more scope for using that awful term O** F*** and likening us to that lot again!
On another note just to pick up on the points made last night. I am a Irish born Scottish raised individual who although raised in this country and speak with a Scottish accent am extremely patriotic towards my homeland. I find the level of criticism towards Aiden from anglo/scouse hacks like Ronnie Whelan appalling and an embarrassment to our proud nation. I may be wrong in this and someone can correct me if I am but is this hack even Irish?

I read somewhere there was an unborn baby who survived the Munich crash so I'm guessing it's him/her, though being able to retire at 49/50 would be not bad!

    My tribute to John Hartson.

Today former Celtic and Arsenal striker John Hartson has announced his retirement after leaving West Brom last month.
The 32-year-old, who won 51 caps for Wales, revealed he had lost his desire and was struggling to keep fit.

John Hartson came to Glasgow one afternoon in the hope on that day that he would sign for Glasgow Rangers however due to unforseen medical examinations, Rangers FC Pulled the plug on any deal stating a knee injury was to show within the medical tests.

Almost at one full year later August 2001, John Hartson was then signed by Rangers' fierciest rivals Glasgow Celtic for a fee of £6million for which was to come close to their still outstanding transfer fee paid out for Chris Sutton at £6.5million.

John Hartson took his time to setlle into what was to become a very successful period in his career - some would say his most succesful days were at Parkhead where he would go on to pick up trophy after trophy whilst banging goal afater goal.

" Big Bad" John would go onto to repay the " faith " shown by Rangers FC by scoring many upon many a goal against them for which John himself would gladly say was his main objective when first arriving to sign on the dotted line and to pull on the hoops.

John scored so other many a goal whilst wearing the hoops none more memorable than in the UEFA Cup run for which Celtic would go all the way whilst finally sucumbing against the mighty FC Porto who would the year later go onto win also UEFA's prestigious Champions League trophy.

On the run to the UEFA Cup final it was John Hartson's goals against Celta Vigo in spain for would put Celtic through on away goals - It was to be his tremedous goal against Liverpool in the 2nd leg at Anfield for which was to further highlighten what was to be a truly unforgettable night in Glasgow Celtic's european history.

I for one will never EVER forget what John Hartson achieved and for what happiness the big man brought to us at Celtic Park.

I will never forget his goals and I will never forget his leadership up front in what has to be classed as one of the greatest IF NOT THee greatest frontline in Celtic's long history.

Chris Sutton, Henrik Larsson and John Hartson - What I would do for a strikeforce like that again - These 3 are TRUE CELTIC LEGENDS.

I hope that you find your retirement to be easy John, Good luck with the family life you so very much crave and your always welcome at the home of Glasgow Celtic.

HAIL HAIL - YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE

The ad hoc decisions to postpone certain matches have done nothing but set dangerous precedents and cause fixture congestion.

The sudden, tragic death of Phil O'Donnell is an obvious exceptional circumstance. It is also reasonable to postpone games when squads are decimated through illness.

The governing bodies should try to ensure that teams playing in Europe on a Thursday should not play a domestic fixture until at least the following Sunday. Similarly, teams playing a domestic fixture on a Sunday should not have to play in Europe until at least the following Wednesday.

Professional football is a squad game and success means that more games will be played and squad strength will be tested.

Ad hoc postponements go against the spirit of the game. Football is a competitive sport. Scottish Football has no history of favouring Celtic. What we should expect is that all Scottish clubs are treated evenly and fairly ;-D

I am becoming worried in the sense of the slightly growing criticsm of that of Scott Brown so I would like to stick my oar in if I may.

Brown's performances this season have been so far so good but only for any normal player in any normal team - Brown isn't a normal player in the escence that he's possibly the highest rated young midfielder in Scotland and also that he has a prime position playing for Scotland's Champions.

What Brown should be doing more of is coming back or sitting mid-park, either battling himself for the ball or collecting it from another player, looking up, driving forward and once he then releases the ball he should drive forward himself supporting the wide men and forwards into the box looking at any cut backs or picking up any loose bals coming from defensive interupption s or keeper saves.

The best man I would ask him to watch doesn't do it as much now but that would be to pick up DVD's etc and ask him to evaluate exactly what Stiliyan Petrov did once he got in full motion at Parkhead.

Stiliyan was at his time in Glasgow the best box to box midfielder in the country and his goals were invaluable to us - something for which Brown needs to add to his game - goals.

I somewhat agree slightly with Jamie in that I find Rangers' midfield to be slightly better in the escence of fergie supporting the front two whilst Thomson knows his position to sit back similar that of Hemdani - BUT with both Hemdani and Thomson doing so it makes it FAR FAR easier for Fergie to get forward.

So while WGS prefers 2 men up front and we ask Brown to do a similar role that of Petrov or in todays case Fergie - it's easier at this moment in time for Fergie to do what Fergie is AS he has 2 defensive minded midfielders to support him.

Brown's still young -IMO he has more ability, creativity and prospectability than that of Ferguson for which to then go forward and then become truly one of Scotlands finest midfielders.

Consitency is the key and especially something for which is required in order to remain a first team regular.

My first reaction to the postponement question, was that we should force the SPL to make a decision which was guaranteed to embarrass them.
The wisdom of subsequent posters has forced me to agree with them, that we should NOT go down the route taken by our neighbours....EVER. The fixture list should be sacrosanct, & having to juggle fixtures is the price we pay for being involved in the CL at this stage. It will make much more of a statement for us to just get on with it, & leave it to others to ask for favours.
I suppose all I can argue is that a man who can't change his mind, can't change anything.

Had the pleasure of BBJ's company on a flight from Glasgow - Cardiff a few weeks after Seville. He was with his daughter. The flight was delayed and his daughter feeling ill. I went to buy my 2 daughters a bottle of water and brought one back for his daughter. He was an absolute gentleman, we talked about him missing the Seville game, about Dick Advocaat, talked about the Celtic fans and he was happy to chat away. The flight was that quiet, he even actually asked the flight attendants if the girls and I could move upto the same row of seats. The flight eventually got into Cardiff, he was met by his father and I was offered a lift to Brecon (even though it was 40 miles in the opposite direction. I renaged but he gave me his telephone number and said if I ever needed tickets to give him a bell. I never ever took him up on his offer but 4 years later I was at the bar in Jinty McGinty's in Ashton Lane, he came upto me shook my hand and introduced me to Neil Lennon by my name. The newly formed bigotted organisation had played around with a few names, one favourite was KKK Rangers FC, another one was Knuckle Draggers FC but were happy with Glasgow Rangers FC. With over 128 years of unsurpassed dignity, they really are the country's established club. It has been argued by the Rangers Supporters Trust (David NEDGAR)and their mouthpiece website Follow Fascism that the word Hun is sectarian.

Does anybody know exactly why Peter Martin McGuire actually changed his name? Every week I read all over the Celtic net assumptions that he did it to hide his Irish surname, but does anybody ACTUALLY KNOW FOR A FACT?

I believe a lot of actors change thier names to avoid similarities with otherS in thesame field, maybe PMMcG clashed namewise with another in his chosen profession.....I'd love to know for sure, otherwise a lot of people are making libellous remarks about the louse.

I´m with Paul67 on this one. I was of the opinion that the no cancellations should have taken place because of the Scotland game or the Rangers Lyon game. Both were cancelled for "the good of Scottish football" - SPL

I think that it should not be down to the clubs to decide anyway as there is far too much room for leverage

Phil O'Donnell death was an absolute tragedy - SPL reaction to it was unbelievable - paranoid are we? Lets look at the re-arranging of fixtures over the December or so within the SPL.

It began (in my mind anyway) w/the postponement of the Gretna vs Rangers game on Dec 9th postponed to Jan 16th for the "good of Scottish football" - SPL quote, for the Rangers Lyon clash on Dec 12th.. Quote from Dec 4th..

Gretna boss Davie Irons is fully behind the Scottish Premier League's decision to postpone Rangers' game against his side

Aberdeen, however, asked for their Dec 15th SPL match with Motherwell to be postponed for the same reason as Rangers the week earlier, as they had a crucial UEFA cup tie with Copenhagen on Dec 20th. Rejected by Motherwell.

Results - Gretna v Rangers postponed "for the good of scottish football" - Aberdeen game Not postponed (SPL decision) Lost 3-0 to Motherwell on Dec 15th

Rangers went on to get beat 3-0 by Lyon; Aberdeen went on to beat Copenhagen 4-0. Result - both Rangers and Aberdeen in the last 32 of the Uefa cup "for the good of Scottish football" however Aberdeen probably "gave up " 3 SPL points in the process "for the good of Scottish football". Rangers had no such worry. ... and this is all down to the whim of Davie Irons ?????... surely this can´t be right.

Now Phil O'Donnel collapses and dies at Fir park Dec 29th in the Motherwell vs Dundee Utd SPL game. In what should have been a gesture from the whole of Scotland "for the good of Scottish football" to postpone ALL matches on Jan 2nd as a mark of respect to Phil O'Donnell, the SPL dilly dallies ...WHY?
Firstly, Motherwells next 2 matches (2nd one against Celtic) and Gretna's next match (which is played at Fir Park) are postponed "due to bereavement".

Then what follows to me is truly astounding ( as far as I can tell from reading the internet)
    1. Celtic ask on Dec 29th for the Rangers Jan 2nd game to be postponed. SPL deny.
    2. Celtic ask Rangers if its ok to postpone this game and make the request public.
Stephen McManus and Scott MacDonald in particular made it clear to Strachan that they had no interest in playing the game and this played a major part and affected the other Celtic players.
    3. Rangers officially and publicly request the game be postponed on Mon Dec 31st. Wish is granted immediately by the SPL.
    4. However Dundee utd who actually saw Phil O'Donnel collapse on Dec 29th make same request for the Hearts game Jan 2nd . SPL denied. 2 other games are played on Jan 2nd.
    5. Who do Dundee Utd have to play on Jan 5th? after the Hearts game - yes you've guessed it ..Rangers!!!! Im glad they won 4-1!

Considering that Celtic drew with Hearts also on Dec 1st before their big decider against AC Milan on Dec 4th was also not considered for postponement "for the good of Scottish football" then in retrospect I have not seen such blatant favouritism shown by the SPL to Scotland's favourite team in quite a long while. I can only guess that automatic qualification into the Champions league next season is paramount for Rangers in 2008.
Paranoid are we.... on with the next generation ?

Celtic should ask Hibs and if Hibs say yes then what´s the problem ?
If they say no we should kick up a fuss with the SPL saying that it is unfair and ask for control of such decisions to be taken away from the clubs themselves. Seems fair to.

Paul67 your last two articles have been brilliant stuff. Keep it up.

Ah sensed his discomfort at the hypothetical question of what reaction would there have been to a caller proposing such bias at that time.

There is no doubt the same scorn would have been poured on the caller as was poured on John the stat man who siad that Rangers would have to play 35 years to incur the same amount of chopped off goals that Celtic amassed in ten years.

I simply don't get this attempt at constant oneupmanship over Rangers.

Celtic for the first time in months, played brilliantly against Killie, we should all be hoping they continue to replicate this form than wishing any game be cancelled lest they may lose their form.

If they play as was against Killie I want them to play as often as possible, not less often.

As I said earlier, Rangers should make it look as though they are trying to sign Adam Virgo and you will have half of the posters on here clamouring for Celtic to offer him a 5 year contract, and wanting Celtic to treble his wages.

Let us get our house in order and the rest can worry over 2nd place.

    on postponements

No, don't think so. Our priority is the SPL title. We should not be postponing games to obtain some nebulous advantage in the CL. The Barca game will take care of itself.

We need to have full focus on the SPL games, one at a time.

    pggtips,

I agree with you on both counts. I think the postponements already in place have helped us, both in having players refocused and return from injury and in allowing us to bring in the new boys without the distraction of playing games on doubtful pitches.

Also, we are probably as strong now as we are going to be this season, so let's kick on and build up a momentum and leave others to catch up on games.

Surprised at so many posters think that the postponement has something to do with CL progress. It´s about demonstrating that Rangers get "haunders" from the SPL and the SFA

Which is basically unfair and discriminating mainly towards Celtic it´s Celtic job to take that injustice on. The cap in hand staring at the ground lets not rock the boat mentality is why they have such an incongruous European record compared to their European one. It´s not just about this year it´s about every year.

Further to Valencia Bhoy's informative post, I want to add a word of warning.

I bought a ticket for the March 2004 game in much the way described by Valencia Bhoy, but when I turned up at the stadium looking more Calton than Catalonia (and I don't mean because of team colours) I still had a terrible time persuading the police officer on duty to let me in.

I told her I was from Glasgow but that I had been in Zaragoza working, which was true, and showed my train ticket. This helped convince her. Also, I hadn't touched a drop (I made up for it later).

If you go down Valencia Bhoy's route, there may be extra hurdles to overcome, but good luck to all who try.

If you read the article in question. What was Pete Lawwell and Gordon's reaction to the article penned in the Evening Times? Especially Gordon as it was a pretty personal attack.

Considering that Peter Martin got the chance of a rare interview with WGS in person. Pretty bad crack the way he has went. Peter Martin reminds me of the time when you used to see people at school not wanting to be their own person and trying to show off to their mates to try and impress them.

On Peter Martin, he said he changed his name because he thought that the surname Maguire might impede his progress in the field of journalism. I wonder what gave him that idea. If I were unkind, I could also wonder exactly how low on the totem pole he might have ended up if he had kept his own name. I would hardly describe his present stuff as the pinnacle of the profession. However I will leave that for others to judge.
On the subject of Celtic books, one of my favourites is Glasgow Celtic 1945-1970 by Tom Campbell. It is well written and also goes into a lot of detail about a period in Celtic's history I find particularly interesting because my father talked a lot about the personalities of the time and there seems to be very little in print about it.
The book also uses extracts from newspapers of the time. These are mainly from the Herald and written by Cyril Horne. He seems to have been, if not pro Celtic, at least very objective. I believe he was a friend of Bob Kelly. Older hands might be able to tell more about his leanings.
My views on Cyril Horne may well be coloured by the keech I read from the laptop loyal in the days before the newspaper boycott meant that the only printed material entering the premises apart from bills are the Celtic View, Catholic Observer and the Flourish.

As far as I am concerned I don't give a toss about getting one up on the SFA or Rangers all I care about is Celtic winning every game. Now by getting the game against Hibs postponed would that help Celtic be in a better position to go through against Barca and in a better position to win a rearrange game against Hibs. We cannot be sure but preparation is paramount and if our managers and players feel this would be benifical then I say go for it.

If we want to improve standards across our game then we have to start from the top. Aye and there´s the rub. It even puts somebody like dons legend Mark Mc Ghee on the spot with Aberdeen. What if he said yes and John Boyle called him to think about that one again. Or Mrs Mc Ghee say not fancy a weekend in Hamburg Mark. Where does it end ? Who in the end really runs our game

We need to stick the boot in every time as we all know its ultimately Davie Murray and not Davie Irons that´s the great manipulator.

Excellent thread. Personally I don't think that we should ask for a postponement of the Hibs game, as has been said earlier we are bigger that that and it didn’t actually help the huns against Lyon did it?. Although it would be nice to hear the excuses from the SPL and Hibs, I don't think that taking the Hibs game out of the way would help when playing Barca, unless we get any injuries that is.

You have to laugh at the EPL salesmen, it would be a great opportunity to take the premier league product to the rest of Europe. What a load of P*@h.

Big John all the very best, I new from the first minute that you signed we had a belter of a player. At 32 he is still a very young man, possibly without his personal issues he may have stayed in the game a little longer. By the way your conduct in public regarding the orcs disgusting treatment of you was superb. Come back anytime.

I agree. I was only offering the only piece of detail I had on Davie Irons.

Of course he's not the problem.

I told a Welsh colleague, a great supporter of football and rugby, about Bobby Tait requesting to referee Rangers in his last game in 1998, in a crucial, crucial game, and having his request granted.

He said it sounded like something from a Banana Republic. All right, that was ten years ago, which Graham Spiers may argue is in keeping with what he said today. As it's in living memory for most of us, I don't think so.

    It stinks.

    ......update from Brasil....

    1. Yesterdays Eire game : As they saw it.

The commentators and the press (the friendly was on telly live here) were quite complimentary about Aideninho last night (although they were more effusive about Keane leading the line). They pretty much played Eire down by saying that the first half was all about sorting out which Brasilians will play in the WC qualifiers and the second was about who'd go to the Olympics. Personally, I thought the wee man ran his heart out, didn't get enough of the ball as he should have and tired in the last ten on a heavy pitch with wet n' windy conditions.

    2. Echoes of a Bunnyman

Meanwhile, over at (a struggling) Corinthians our mate Coelho got his break in the RB starting position last Sat in the SP state championship (he came on as a sub in the 2nd 45mins in the previous game and was boo'ed - along with the rest of the team). Anyway, halfway thru the 2nd half he had a right set too with his own centre half and got subbed straight after. Never played yesterday.

OK gotta go. Post Carnival depression is setting in faster than the credit vultures can circle over Greyskull.

    Boa noite

It is no coincidence that all our central mids have struggled in G.Strachans time as coach.N.lennon filled the area and closed off a lot of the gap.Our present system leaves our centre mids exposed when they commit forward and the alternative is to stay deep and leave forwards isolated.
With S.Browns constant motion it makes him seem out of position sometimes.

I think the difference between the Gretna-Rangers match and the Motherwell-Aberdeen match is that Rangers appeared to have asked Gretna about a postponement before making a formal request to the SPL. Aberdeen either didn't ask Motherwell, or else they asked the SPL to call the game off knowing that Motherwell were opposed to the idea.

Postponements have been granted in previous years when the other club has been in agreement. Our match with Dundee immediately before the UEFA Cup final was brought forward by three days (I believe it was Dundee who made the offer).

This would suggest that we might get a postponement if Hibs agree (although with their cup situation the SPL might not want to have another match to reschedule), but if Hibs refuse we have no chance.

In this situation I would not bother asking, and would quite like the idea that we should publicly state that we don't need a postponement. If you are a succesful team, you are going to have a lot of matches. It goes with the territory.

I would also like to join in the general good wishes for John Hartson, Celtic legend and slayer of the Huns. I believe he is going to be appearing fairly regularly on Setanta from now on - looking forward to that.

Lisboa, you asked how they are getting away with their treatment of Cousin? Simple - he wanted out, he made his bed and now he has to lie in it. Rangers themselves are probably worse off anyway, with Darcheville suspended for three European matches, and frequently injured anyway, and Boyd not fitting into the one man up formation favoured by Smith.

And from my reading of the rules, if FIFA say he cannot play for Fulham, why should he be allowed back to Rangers? After all, a player can be registered for three clubs in a year, so the transfer itself is not illegal.

    Paul67,

Has PL decided enough is enough with the media. Gloves are off. Time for action? DD detestes the media over here. Maybe between John Reid, DD and PL they are devising a plan.

Constructive criticism i don't mind from anybody and i include ex players. But some of nonsense spouted from people especially ex players like Charlie Nicholas and Andy (can't read an autocue)Walker does my head in.

Walker should remeber his second spell at Celtic before criticising anybody. He couldn't hit a barn door and was offloaded to Sheffield Utd. It was McAvennie that made him. Once Macca left he was not the same player.

Davie Provan is another one to an extent, sometimes some of his points are valid. I think Davie called it wrong when he was trying to make the big brakethrough at Sky when he went on the campaign against Kenny Dalglish along with Keevins. I would assume Davie and TB are good friends but i'm sure TB must have wondered ow he has changed over the years and the person he is starting to become.

As i said i don't mind constructive criticism but sometimes rather than think about their ego they should have some sort of respect to their former club that provided them with such comfortable lifetyle they lead today. Provan in particular considering Dalglish brought his Liverpol team up to play in his testiomonal.

I'm not advocating they go down the line as Johnstone and Hateley but some sort respect should be showing to us.

Radio Clyde has detoriated badly since they lost the rights to broadcast live games. Never been the same since they lost the live games.

Bringing in the likes of Walker, Derek Ferguson, Hugh Dallas has spoilt what used to be a no bad listen.

Bring back Cooney with Johnston and relegate Pedro back to reporting at grounds as well. It needs a clear out. Get it back to the tried and trusted.

    Re Cyrll Horne,

I met Cyrll once at a Celtic night I ran in Christ The King Holytown, in the mid seventies.

He and Billy McNeil were the panellists and Cyrll, while I would not say he was a rabid Celtic Supporter, was very enthuastic about our team and club.

He loved what we had achieved in Lisbon and regretted our failure in Milan.

He acknowledged our 9 in a row and supporeted us as the out and out best team of that time.

He spoke highly of our achievements praising our players and club, and I was certainly impressed with his, what I thought was, total respect for Celtic Football Club.

He either had just retired or retired soon after that night.

I remember feeling a tinge of sadness when he died.

    STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS,

On topic - we shouldn't ask for a postponement. Two wrongs never did make a right and there is no doubt that the whole sorry corrupt tale of the Rangers v Gretna postponement was well out of order.

    My dear,friend.... Fan-a-tic...21.55

I shall do my utmost to make this submission, from me....
As Crystal Clear as I can.

Although, on re-reading my former one, on this very subject...I cannot agree with your purported difficulty in comprehending the context, therein.

    I say...

Scott Brown is not performing his allotted task in a satisfactory manner.

He is not pulling his weight...
He is paying more attention to being as obstreperous and contentious, towards the Referee and his decisions, than concentrating on his task.
He is also becoming more and more guilty, of making... Late and Ridiculous Tackles, on his Opponents...leading to occasionally a very cheap Yellow Card, which, of course...and understandably does, lead to his aformentioned highly contested decisions by the Umpire,in which Scott ,inevitably, vociferously finds fault.

Indeed, he is indulging in a circle of Resentment... thereby, compounding his miseries.

    The upshot, being...
Scott is on very thin Ice, the REST, OF THE GAME....

The above described state of affairs are not conducive to Scott being able to perform up, to his accepted ability...as he is under
...THE GUN...or to put it PLAINLY... he is in danger of receiving another Yellow... and surely, I do not need to explain what that reception would entail.

This kind of pressure has come about, strictly as the result of his and only his...OWN FAULT!

    Meanwhile, back at the Ranch...

His Yellows and piling up.... and predictably ,he has now been barred from a very IMPORTANT GAME!

Are you following all of this...?

    Good!

I have no knowledge, whatsoever of the Technical side of Soccer....

I am like the undertaker in that respect.

I do not know how the person died... I have no interest in how he died...

The only thing I am certain of ...is that he is a corpse.

    Likewise...

In my capacity as a Spectator...

I do not know EXACTLY WHY, Scott is under- performing...

I can hazard a Guess... and of which, I have already given...

But, I cannot give a concrete reason...as to his recent very serious loss of form.

    However.

I know, THAT HE IS UNDER PERFORMING!

Scott Brown is not Performing as he should..as I have come to expect of him....in short....

    HE IS PLAYING BADLY!

    Is that clear enough....?

    Under my credo....

"What have you done for me,lately... Scott?"

    His answer is

    "Not, Much!"

    Ergo...

If the wine is not good....

    Throw it out!

    Gary,

I was brought up reading the likes of Alan Heron and Jack Harkness. by the time I reached my twenties, I was becoming a bit more selective.

Harkness would hardly write the word Celtic, and would never praise our club.

He worked for a paper that had a very distinct Anti-Catholic policy.

By the time Radio Clyde came along, Big Jock had his on air fight with the "Kirkcaldy Yank", Richard Park and after that I had a distrust of all media.

What is happening just now at Clyde is not new, it is just more blatant.

Thirty years ago, the media had no Celtic men therefore we expected nothing from them.

Today there are Celtic men dotted around the media in general and they always fdisappoint us.

I fear for our great relationship with John Hartson.

Who would have thought that players like Nicholas, Burley, Provan and Walker would so often put the boot into us.

    Nothing changes.

WE STAND ALONE, AND SIDE BY SIDE.

Two crystal clear reasons why Celtic should request the postponement of the game at Easter Road.

    1. If Celtic are still in the tie we will require an enormous workrate from every single player to have any chance of overcoming Barca, quite possibly 120 minutes of enormous workrate. Playing Hibs at Easter Road on Saturday (our 3rd game in 6 days) gives our players only 2 days rest (Sunday and Monday), one of which will be for travelling to Barcelona, before taking to the Nou Camp on Tuesday evening.

    2. It's important that a level playing field exists and is seen to exist. My personal view is that Celtic have on many, many occasions been shooting up the hill. Those who lean and bow to favour our rivals must be made to squirm. If we make it easy for them they will continue to lean and bow. We must make them treat us even handedly or expose them for failing to do so.

Request the postponement for the short term benefit of Celtic and the long term benefit of Celtic. If the request is declined we may benefit by a similar on field reaction to the one we seen at Ibrox following the Boavista UEFA semi final.

As for MArtin if there is a more annoying commentator in the game than his guy I've not heard him. He is simply the worst.

I would go against most on here and say compared to other ex-Celts Craig Burley is not too bad. He has a go at everyone when they have a poor game. I don't think he singles Celtic out unlike others.

Quietly (since it's 12 and no one will be on) I admire Johnstone for defending the undefensible, at all times. In stark contrast to the Celtic boot boys.

John Hartson is a wealthy young man with Celtic very much at heart he didn't pander to anyone on the park. I don't expect he will off it either, especially in regards to Celtic.

It's always is the case... Richt?

    Harsh?...no harsh enough,pal!

He needs a good old-fashioned "talking to"... which I believe has possibly, already occurred.

But so far, that "talking to", has had no visible effect on his displeasing on field antics.

There again...if that reproval has actually taken place....it increases my displeasure with him, even further.

In my book ... he is being a recalcitrant child.

He needs to be reproved,in the full meaning of the woid, for his lack of response to advice.

I’m a little torn on the do we/don’t we test the mettle debate. It strikes me as a chance to either confirm or re-confirm our paranoia about the powers-that-be. As one of the earlier posters said, let’s save that particular dilemma for the semi-final....

    On a separate note...

I don’t go to away games (at least I didn’t – every game is an away game for me now). But on Wednesday night I met with some guys that made me realise (once again) what this special thing that we all share was.
After a few false starts and an initial mix up on the night (on my part I might add) I was welcomed in to their company and reminded about what Celtic fans do best – they enjoy. We had “met” via CQN and e-mail, and for me at least, the initial face to face is always the hardest part. But I needn’t have worried. Soon I was part of the conversation, part of the laughter, and it felt like a little bit of home. In fact, if it had been raining.....

Just when I’m forgetting what a thing we have here, someone gives me a little jolt.

My belated good wishes go out to those who have recently lost loved ones. I can assure you I had a good thought for you and your respective families. I know the strength I took from the good wishes I received in my own time of sorrow.

Hail Hail and remember, "with Celtic, you never walk alone"

While the Barca game is important and it would be beneficial for a postponement, I would be concerned that this has a negative impact on us in the league.

I think more importance should be placed on sorting out league fixtures, especially with the possibility of playing Rangers twice in March.

It is more important to win these games than it is the Barca game. To that end, I would sacrifice playing three games in six days before the barca match in order to play one or two games in the week before each rangers game.

Any media outlet that has no real content, or no substance to its content, will cease trading in the second decade of this century.

There is a race to the bottom among the Scottish football media. I would be worried for them but for two things.

    1. It's their own fault for determining to offer people sizzle instead of steak.

    2. I will not miss them, and I'm sure I'm not alone, because it is now years since I learned ANYTHING about the club I love from a source other than CQN.

Big problems with my computer this morning. Don't know why.

But before it collapses again, I just wanted to say that my Dad used to have a lot of time for Cyril Horne. He used to be a regular at his supporters club functions.

The only others who have given us a fair crack of the whip are Ian Archer Graeme Spiers and Glen Gibbons, in Scotland. Hugh McIlvanney used to wax eloquent in the Observer, especilly during Big Jock's tenure. But the best bit of punditry I recall, (I think from a man named Greene) was in the Times about 1972, when we were invited down for Bobby Moore's testimonial. He advised his readers to go and watch us to see how football should be played.

McManus69, our man does see the value in the unofficial sites; he and his PR team have been a revelation in new-media management.

They are involved in a constant battle over the negative angles the club is portrayed in, but it looks like trying to hold back the tide. As soon as Celtic put pressure on a media organisation they go into ‘we’re not here to be pushed around by the likes of you’ mode.

As loumacarisbettingslip said, ignore the offenders.

Sorry, just for the record, that Bobby Moore testimonial game was in 1970.

Celtic were fantastic that evening in a 3-3 draw.

The West Ham fans were great too.

Both teams played football the way it should be played.

One of the first appearances that evening for the blow up jinky dolls!

(The auld hauns will know what I mean)

We played in Bobby Charlton's testimonial in August 1972 (0-0)and won many friends that evening too.

Paul Wilson took the friendship thing a bit too far though when he seemed to miss an open goal!

Then of course, there was Jack Charlton's testimonial in 1973 (4-3 for the Celts).

Ron Yates in 1974 etc etc etc

I am afraid though the circus that was the Alan Shearer testimonial has left me thinking that these matches are now best avoided.

By all means play testimonials for deserving causes.

That would sit comfortably with what Celtic are all about.

These days testimonials for overpaid superstars?

    Not for me.

Perhaps we should ask Hearts if we should can the game on 16th Feb, to allow us to concentrate on the Wed fixture against Barca.

Or in light of our priorities and the unique nature of our club, perhaps we should ask Barca to postpone one or both of our CL matches to allow us to fully focus on the SPL encounter against St Mirren or the Cup sortie against Aberdeen.

Hearts and/or Barca would surely empathise!

A couple of points on the media. Firstly all press conferences should be broadcast on Ch67 and Celtic TV. At the press conferences all contributors should be required to identify themselves before their questions are answered. I have organised and held press conferences myself and have witnessed many more and this is common practice. Listen to any broadcast on the news and you will hear this.
Secondly is there nothing that can be done about the press plagiarising the weekly output from the Celtic View. Every Wednesday morning you can see, in for example Hugh Keevins' article, whole sections which have been lifted word for word from that day's View. Bad enough in itself but there is never any reference to the source. Are there no copyright issues or evn conventions to be observed here?

With regard to lifting copy from somewhere else, it's pretty standard practice to regurgitate narrative, but if quotes are involved, people usually credit the source and it's a poor show if Keevins does not do this.

I have often thought about this aswell particulary stuff appearing in the papers lifted directly from either the Celtic View or Celtic TV without any accreditation to the original source.

I also agree that the entire press conferences should be available either online or on Celtic TV so that Celtic fans can watch it and get a true feel for what goes on rather than just the snippets. Journos should be required to say who they are and where they are from.

If it is in the best interests of Celtic to ask for a postponement then we should do it. Forget about what anyone else says. We don't care they don't like us anyway.

Is it in our best interests? Yes, so we should end of story. Anything less is letting us be bullied by the establishment again.

What happens next year if Rangers ask again and are allowed. We would maybe get the bottle to complain and be hit with you never asked last year. Pschylogoy plays a big part in organizations like this and we should let them know who we are.

And as some have already pointed out Rangers postponement of their game v Gretna did not benefit Scottish Football it benefitted Rangers' chances of winning the title. (They could have played a reserve team against Gretna and it wouldn't have affected their chances in Europe).

Ask for the postponement as it will benefit Celtic. End of story. If they knock us back their actions will be able to be used in our favour some time in the future if we wish to do so and will therefore benefit Celtic at some point in the future.

If they say yes we benefit. I cannot see any positives in not requesting it. Because we're better than that is the best we can come up with. Rubbish. That is the voice of weakness.

The other reason is that we should have a decent enough squad. More rubbish. If we lose to Barca and Hibs and lose the league this year will you be happy to sit in May and say it was the right decision as we should have had a decent squad. Rubbish. Winning the league is a must this year.

    Celtic_First,

When you are referencing 'Scottish Football Media' are you including the Sun in it?

This is what I don't understand:

You are using a Murdoch quote to say that print media is doomed. But the Sun is part of the Scottish Football Media and by all accounts, offers much the same, if not exactly the same content of its other tabloid competition.

I don't think we will see the Sun drop off the face of the Earth anytime soon. To be honest, print media as a whole wont die either, it will just evolve.

Remember that game well. 3 - 3 draw and it was wonderful. Only black spot was that Sean Connery was in attendance supporting us of course. That was beore he supped at the devil's table and went with the bad guys.

On another point. Apologies to all the Martins. Hard to believe but I may have been incorrect.

    Only slightly of course.

    Be safe.

Live broadcasts of football matches on radio and TV were supposed to kill print media. It didn't.

Internet is supposed to do the same. But it won't.

Print media is now trying to work out how to make money from the web.

As long is there is an advertising market, the print media will continue.

    Wee Gordon Strachan

I didn't limit it to print media because Murdoch didn't.

Of course it includes The Sun and all his other titles. The main point is the one you make at the end.

It's a tough enough market for all these products now. They are suffering losses in readership numbers that they will, without question, be unable to sustain for another decade. Therefore, they must adapt or die.

There will be winners and losers. I interpret Murdoch to be saying that the winners will be the ones that offer what the public wants.

That's not to suggest all of the public wants the same thing. That was never true and is less true now than ever (I believe it's called segmentation in marketing circles).

It could be there will still be a market for tabloids, although I hope not, that look to provoke (they would say entertain) rather than inform. It could be some people will still buy into that.

What cannot continue for much longer is the made-up garbage and the soi-disant 'personality'-driven rants, as though no issue could be closed before we all learn what Chic Young, Jim Traynor or Peter Martin thinks about it. That cannot continue because what those three and all the others think about Daniel Cousin's putative move to Fulham, who did better in the transfer window et cetera is utterly worthless.

And when they make stuff up ('Thugs and Thieves' and all that), Dermot Desmond or John J Fisher could have a case in law against them for harming their investment and completely take them to the cleaners.

A decade is a long time.

I'll happily meet you back here in 2018 to discuss how it pans out.

On the should we-shouldn't we issue of asking for a postponement, Gordon Strachan will decide, in what will be the best interests of Celtic retaining the title. Nothing else will come into his deliberations.

No thought of "testing" the SPL or showing how tough we are will come into it. It will be a totally pragmatic decision and football politics will not feature in his decision.

The title is the be all and end all of his ambitions this season. Anything else is a bonus.

Graciously accepted in the manner in which it was issued.

I wanted to ask the same question. We all need to aware of the "meeja" but sometimes there's no smoke without fire. Skoosh's attitude and body language indicate something is wrong. Added to that are rumours I heard from a Glasgow source who indicated there was some substance to the rumours. I might add that as far as I can tell these particular rumours originated from a certain ex Rangers player who still has close connections in Glasgow now successfully plying his trade back in Italy.

    Celtic_First,

The point I am trying to make is that the Scottish Football Media is not doomed. It will not die or disappear over the coming years. It may change but the Sun, Record, etal will be around for a long while to come.

Opinion is a significant part, more so today, in almost every media outlet.

I buy the Guardian because it is a left leaning paper. I am interested in hearing the facts as they are presented. However, I value the opinion of their journalists, columnists and guests. Their opinion, along with my understanding of the situation help form my opinion on the issue in hand.

I don't think the opinion of those you cite are worthless. They are in a position where they have access to the inner circle of Scottish Football: players, managers and the other parts that make up the big merry-go-round of the SPL. This means, at times they have an insight into the game that I don't. It is that reason I want to hear their opinion.

I suppose it is understandable that you feel aggrieved that some of these journalists might have an agenda. But that is the same of any body, organisation or government. They all operate with an agenda.

I don't think it is any suprise to learn that journalists lie and media organizations manipulate stories.

It's up to you to separate fact from fiction or the black from the grey.

After all, some people still think it was justified to bomb Iraq. I wonder how many Sun readers supported it.
