Celtic interim results, debt down and still profitable

Celtic released their interim accounts for the six months to 31 December 2007 this morning, with the headline figure showing a drop in turnover to £42.434m (2006: £46.796m), however this figure is largely explained by the club playing two fewer home games during the period, and the Uefa Champions League TV pot money for Scotland being shared with Rangers; last season Celtic were Scotland’s only Champions League entrants.

We can anticipate two additional home games in the second half of the season, which will boost earnings by close to £2m.

Debt is down, but still with us, at £6.81m (2006: £15.02m).

Retained profit for the period fell to £10.066m (2006: £17.940), but the previous year’s figures were significantly influenced by the sale of Stilian Petrov, Ross Wallace and Stanislav Varga; last summer's player sales generated much less cash.

The second half of the year traditionally brings a net loss for Celtic, despite a Champions League tie against Milan and the £1m sale of Shaun Maloney (the purchase of Paul Hartley will be amortised over the period of his contract), the second half of last year brought a £2.9m loss, so unless Barcelona are beaten again, we can expect a year-end profit figure close to £5m.

    Paul67,

Had a read at Interims at end of last thread. Mentions less home games 1st half of season then, there will be less home games in 2nd half of season.

Is this due to away Scottish Cup draws?

Normally St Mirren is a ballot, but this time it was 1st come 1st served.

Could be last time we EVER play there as well and I also have a feeling in my whisky that it will be on that day that we hit the top of the league again.....never to relinquish it again.... for a thousand epochs......till the moon deserts the sky, till all the seas run dry, till then..... I’ll take a 0-0 or better to us on the night and hope the Saints of Lost Causes are with us on our travels.

I just hope you, the intrepid Estadio, SMB, The Painter man, and all the others who are going on that particular pillage come away with just rewards.

I hope we knock the stuffing out of Barcelona in the nicest possible way. To say I am envious of you guys would be to lie. I’m as jealous as a Celtic supporter could ever be of his fellow supporters.

    Martin 42,

I hope your mum recoves quickly now that she is receiving the correct treatment. Your story reminded me of a similar thing that happened with my son last year. He hurt his foot (still don't know how!?) and x-rays came back clear so he was dispatched without so much as a bandaid. TWO WEEKS later the hospital phoned our house to say they had re-examinned his x-ray (which they said was standard practice) and discovered he had THREE fractures in his foot! However they decided not to treat it as "it's been left too long now, and he's young anyway, so it'll heal itself quickly"

Thank god the medical people who dealt with him recently were not so inept! :-)

I am not a gambling man, so I apologies if this does not make sense for either the punters or the bookies but I think it would be a way of tackling the problem indirectly and many making or loosing a bit of money and at least having some fun.

    Solution

One Bookmaker keen on Celtic as a market, he allow bets of 15/1 Fergushun not to be red carded, 14/1 Fergushun booked.

Run these style bets for the entire Rangers squad, and for penalties and word will get around that we are betting on huns not getting booked the pressure will build if half the nation are talking about it and bookies will still make money.

I say friend, but the word does not do the man justice....through his son, he managed to secure me 8 tickets for a wee Celtic game a few years ago, which enabled the Father Ted Bo'ness CSC to hit "The Road to Seville"

I was really struck by the difference in income just a few home games means. Surely this is a good reason for abandoning the stupid end-of season split as it potentially could mean a significant variance in income? (Significant enough to influence the purchase, or not, of a signing perhaps?) This is not to mention that control of how many home games, and their income, Celtic can rely on, and plan with, is now in the hands of the SPL and not Celtic.

Back to Football matters, I am looking forward with relish to thumping Hearts and to bettering Barcelona! :-)

    Yours in Celtic,

I could pick them up to-morrow,as I'm heading for BBs,or Tuesday,as I'm going to meet up with Zbyszek,to set his mind at rest, and give him the tickets for the game,so I can see you there,or I can meet you,where-ever,your choice.
I know that your not that keen on BBs,I usually get there for 11.45,so I have a spare 3/4hr before Babbity's,let me know what suits you.

I like BBs,but the company which is CQN,is gradually getting larger than what Babbity's can cope with, and when it gets full,it becomes hot,and a bit stiffling, which is not to my liking.

It's your choice Matt,I'll be game for anything.

In a way, something like that happened to Dad, and that’s the main reason why I am making these extra trips home, to see how he and Mum are coping (as well as getting to games unexpectedly). If you want, I can pass on tomorrow what my brother researched on our case.

    big liam,

The Italian Kitchen and the Italian Cafe in the Merchant City are both very nice. As is Qua (opposite the Italian Kitchen).

Also in the Merchant City, Cafe Gandolfi or Gandolfi Fish are both great. Daba is a good curry house on Candelriggs (I think). Maybe Albion Street...

Metropolitan in the Fruitmarket does good food, and has a smart-ish bar downstairs.

If your mate wants cheap pasta or pizza, Pulcinella in Hope Street is good.

There is a nice tapas bar in the Radisson on Argyle Street (near Central).

If he is feeling really flush, Rogano or Grill Room at 29 are tremendous, but pricey (both Royal Exchange Square).

The Pig and the Butterfly on Bath Street is cool, though a bit of an uphill walk from Central. Also in that vicinity Red Onion and Two Fat Ladies on Blythswood street are both good- maybe a bit pricey...

Finally there's always Jack McPhee (straight from the sea!) on Sauchiehall street, for the authentic Glasgow al fresco dining experience!

Has your mate been to Glasgow, and particularly the Central Hotel, before?

The Central Hotel (the one at Central Station) is included on lots of tourist web booking services etc but please note it can be manky. It is also used as a meeting place/pick up for escorts, and nothing to do with cars. I'm serious, my old dears twee friends came down to Galsgow from Dundee for a weekend and and got a real shock about both the standard of the hotel and what was going on around them.

Then again maybe your mates know exactly what thye're doing!!

Free WiFi on the train is a brilliant idea. Well done for taking advantage.

It amazes me how few businesses so far have cottoned on to the attraction of free WiFi, and don't get me started on the way hotels and airports rip people off.

Fergus McCann's bus service between New York and Boston offered free WiFi from the start, as well as many other great touches from the man of genius, which is why lots of travellers on that route vow they'll never go by train or plane again.

Hope your trip home goes well.

    McCurry gets Kilmarnock game:

When Mike McCurry blows his whistle at Rugby Park on Sunday he will have completed his sixth Rangers game of the season, more than double that of any other referee. That's not the interesting fact, although you may think that is interesting enough...

Of those 6 matches, 5 of them have been SPL matches. Nope, that's not it either.

Sunday's game will be Mike McCurry's 14th SPL game of the season, meaning that an incredible 35% of his SPL appointments have been Rangers. Yip, every 3rd SPL game is a Rangers game for Mike! Is it his last season or something?

And, if you haven't dozed off yet, having dished out a total of 40 yellow cards in his 13 SPL games so far, he gave Celtic players more yellow cards in that one match at Ibrox than he has given Rangers players in all of the SPL games combined.

When coupled to the fact that no player in the SPL has received more yellow cards than Aiden McGeady, that big brut of a hammer thrower, it does make you wonder when things will start to even themselves out. Doesn't it?

Aiden has received more yellow cards than Cuellar, Weir, Papac, Adam and Ferguson combined.

Celtic have had 37 SPL yellow cards in total.

Mike McCurry has issued 12 of them in 4 games. That means that 32% of our SPL cards have been issued by Mr McCurry in 17% of our games.

Or 30% of his cards have been issued against Celtic players.

p.s the other game was a cup game - remember the one where barry used his hand to score a goal

pps yes he was in charge when mcgregor fly kicked calum elliot

ppps yes he was in charge when Rangers scored on offside goal to beat DU

In the words of the great Matrin O'Neil

"we are going to have to be really good this year"

It's no longer a health, nor even a sickness service. It's the National Beancounting Service. Everything has a price; and all the things that had a value but which don't tick a box in someone's spreadsheet are being allowed to rust away.

What do you call the Mongolian Restaurant in Glasgow. I'm sure it was at Merchant City??

Anyway, something I noticed last week and haven't made mention, Scott McDonald ran his heart out against Aberdeen and scored 2 goals. I think we chanted his name for a whole 1 minute and that was it. Then as he was substiuted, we sang the name of the man replacing him, Samaras. A lad who has scored one goal and just joined us.

Just felt bad for Skippy, and hope he knows he's appreciated.

Another I thought about was wee McGeady. 2 of our biggest players, but without song, or even a real chant.

    Aiden McGeady on the Wing???
(Hope that's not a slight on Jinky but comparisons have been getting made and offers of the No7 shirt?)

Just wondering if any of the Chant Guru's could come up with something for the lads to help make them seem more appreciated.

re the dodgy ref debate, howzabout……….

compile stats on the refs performances from our games this season in the SPL,

list the stats in relation to how they have impacted on us, e.g. 9 yellow cards in one game from a particular ref

compile a wee league type table, e.g. 2 points for a booking, 3 points for a penalty against us, 4 points for denying us a stonewaller and so on,

the hard part, get the club involved,

Gordon then uses this information to comment on what he expects from a particular ref during his pre match interview,

chances are that by doing that the refs in our game would be put under the spotlight,

worst case scenario - the refs behave impeccably during the game and we end up with egg on our face,

however I would argue it’s a lot better to look foolish than allow them the opportunity to damage our efforts to win 3 in a row,

having said all that I agree, Gordon would almost certainly not want to get involved.

I await the negative spin that will undoubtedly be put on these results by the clowns on Clyde and the Winalot press.

Income down, profits down, the place must be in freefall.

I'll bet not much mention of debt being significantly down and despite income being down slightly still making a £10million profit.

To someone whose knowledge on these matters is limited (only an A in Higher Accountancy long lost from my head) the results seem more than decent.

It does show however how vital it is to reach the CL every year. Winning the title must be our primary objective at the start of every season. Anything else in Europe must be looked at as a bonus.

My new tip 10/1 First goal will be scored from the penalty spot. Get on whilst you can.

I wrote this earlier then I saw the Herald Headliner and I thought naw it’s just me, so I ditched this. Having read your post I took encouragement and hit the undo button a few times to bring it back. :-

Just been having a wee look at newsnow and reading the headlines. With the advent of CQN and its artful subscribers I find, unless I’m bored, I don’t often have to read beyond the headliners.

Anyway, I was just thinking, how long has it been since Celtic has been able to announce consecutive profitable returns. A long time I’d have thought. A cause for celebration, or optimism, in some quarters at least. Not in the Glad Sad Rags Headlines it’s not.

I know I’m overdue my nightly paranoia pills but am I really the only one who thinks the numbers are decent? (Irrespective of what is done with any surplus for the moment).

Is it really so hard for a rag to give a little credit where credit is due. After all, those figures are nothing less than the combined efforts of Celtic Football Club, Celtic PLC and every Celtic supporter who walks this earth. Every Celtic supporter - who as much as bought a Celtic View - contributed to those figures.

The only positive Headliner is…. Well you look.

The numbers might have dropped for some, but for me in my accounting ignorance, I think they reflect tremendous efforts by a tremendous club inclusive of all its elements.

Bugger it, I’m away to take my pills and I’m off newsnow for the rest of Lent. At least.

Cheers Paul I’m gash with numbers.

I took your advice and had a wee nosey at Newsnow and needless to say the spin is already being put on this.

I particularly liked the headline from 'The Scotsman', 'Celtic profits announcement: Parkhead Club report drop in income'. Not 'Celtic profits announcement: Parkhead Club report £10million profit'.

You are right though, everyone know matter in how small a way contribute to these figures. I hate June, Septmeber, October and November when I have to shell out for 3 season books each year but at the end of the day if I and 53,000 others like me didn't then where would we be and what standard of player would we be watching.

I would dread to think what it would be like with say only 30,000 season book holders and the rest picking and choosing their games and what it would do to our income. That to me is the biggest concern we may have in the next few years.

It's a great journey all the way. You have come through Peterborough, where Mary Queen of Scots was buried, spectacular York and now Durham.

You still have the great cityscapes of Newcastle and Edinburgh to come before you get to see Celtic Park out of the right-hand-side on the approach to the Dear Green Place.

    You're a lucky man.

I would expect you are correct.
We ate in KK on a Stag weekend, food was fine, cheap enough, and seemed good if there were a few friends dining together (all about the ambience!)

Next time I'm in Glasgow for a bite I will maybe get some pointers as to where to take my good lady.

Indeed, if you come up to the Deen, or even happen to visit God's walled City of Derry Iwill be more than happy to give you a low down on the finest eateries.

Is it my imagination or do the BBC not like us? Yesterday it was 'Rangers drop out of rich list' not 'Great news for Scotland, we still have a team in the top 20 despite being a wee country'. Today a picture of Brian Quinn looking like Fraser from 'Dad's Army'. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/celtic/7246786.stm

At least their headline is positive in that typical back-handed way 'Celtic slash debt but profits dip'. Should it be 'profits dip' or 'profit dips'?

Unfortunately, I can't make the game tomorrow so won't be in BBs. I will be up on Wednesday. If anyone is going to be in BBs beforehand, please let me know.

C_1st, I agree. Just pulling out of Newcastle. This side is much more interesting than the west coast route. Lindisfarne may also be glimpsed. Looking forward to the east Lothian sea views. I didn't know that you can see CP fro mthe train (certainly from the air, on approach to Abbotsinch) so I'll watch out.

    TMATCS:

I don’t know if it is the organisation itself that is to blame or just some of the no minds that have weaselled a job out of them, old school tie and extremely ticklish handshakers co-op. However we seldom do well in print or audio from they.

However, just lifting a few words from your post – “despite being a wee country” – reminded me about this:

For all the great sporting cities around the world, for all the great football cities around the world, how many can boast three 50k+ all seater stadia? How many can boast three 50k+ all seater stadia dedicated to football as we know it?

For all the great sporting leagues around the world EPL, NFL, ARFL, etc. etc. which country, pro rata, has the best supported league in the whole world?

The answers might just stick in the craw of the London BBC and others. I’ll let them do their own reading. But Scotland, and Glasgow especially, come out very well.

Would they ever credit north of the border? I won’t hold my breath.

God forbid Celtic and Rangers do both expand their stadiums – it would put us out of sight as a City. Compared to all those you’d be most likely to think of first as being the best equipped.

Compare Glasgow to any other UK city for stadia, including, and especially, London; and then venture abroad. It’ll surprise you.

We’re not as small as some dicks would have others believe.

Re Football's Money List. I've seen a couple of interesting comments in old media - don't know if they have been picked up on CQN.
Firstly the average income per spectator last season (The Times). In EPL it's £34, in Spain it's £22, Germany £16, Italy £15 and £11 in France. Does anyone know what it is in SPL ?
Secondly of AC Milan's total income of £153MM, a staggering 2/3rds comes from TV !! (Daily Mail).I know they can sell their own TV rights but that's a phenomenal amount. Makes you wonder how much Celtic could make given the worldwide support that we have.
