Financial anomaly that undermines football balance sheets

Most businesses have the odd anomalous regulation and football is no different. A case in point is the balance sheet valuation, or non-valuation, to be more precise, of players developed through a club’s youth system.

Let me give you an example, Celtic bought Barry Robson from Dundee United for a total fee in the region of £1m, while loaning Jim O’Brian to United for a nominal fee.

These transactions will have very little impact on the Celtic accounts for this season, as Rosbson’s fee will be amortised to the profit and loss account evenly over the period of his contract. Celtic paid no money for O’Brian, so accounting rules state that they must show the player’s registration as having zero value on the books.

Technically, however, Celtic and Dundee United were free to set whatever value they wanted on the two transactions. If Celtic asked for £1m to loan O’Brian and United asked for £2m for the transfer of Robson, the same amount of money would have changed hands between the clubs, but Celtic would immediately have £1m more on their balance sheet for a player previously valued at zero, although over time, the amortised change for Robson would be greater.

This did not happen, of course, but take a look at what has been going on over the city this season. Rangers spent the best part of £8m in the summer and then sold a player for £8m who came through the Ibrox youth system, and so had a zero value in the accounts.

That £8m spend will have a small impact on the Rangers account this season, as it will be amortised to the P&L over the period of the player’s contract, but the £8m sale goes straight onto their balance sheet. Rangers net spend is close to zero, but their year-end accounts will be in the region of £6m better.

There is a lesson from this; if you need a short term financial fix, buying and selling players in equal measure can add millions of pounds to the book value of your football club, remember, though, short term fixes need to paid for in the long term.

Apologies if you have been trying to access Celtic Quick News today. My datacentre put my server down for scheduled maintenance which turned into a major network trauma.

However way it is dressed up .Selling Hutton for £9 million will do wonders for Rangers finances.
If they win the league and we fail to get CL football ,the financial outlook of Rangers will swing back to an almost even keel, compared to ourselves.

If they win the league i fear that Rangers will be able to outspend us in the summer, and outbid us .

If we win the league they would be less likely to gamble on purchasing expensive players before they have qualified for the CL.
Which in itself, diminishes there chances of qualifying.

Celtic winning the SPL this season would be a serious blow to there short and medium term ability to compete with us on a financial basis.

Rangers have now won something like 31 of there last 32 league games.
The have just racked up there sixth consecutive clean sheet.

Celtic have no margin for error. We will probably have to win almost all of our remaining league fixtures to win the SPL.
    Tommorrow is a massive game.

The players must rise to the challenge now.

Ronaldinho will be on the bench tonight in Barcelona's away game to Seville.

They have a lot of players out: Eto'o, Puyol, Deco, Zambrotta and Bojan will all be out. Rafa Márquez hasn't trained with the team all week, having arrived back from a game with Mexico at midday on Friday (he played the 90 minutes).

Kick-off is at 9.00pm Glasgow time. It will be a cracker.

I don't dispute your numbers, but Rangers are hanging on here. Tomorrow is crucial for Celtic because any further slips will relieve the pressure on them. We need to keep that pressure on. They are close to cracking.

If the unthinkable happens and we don't win the league it's not time to be slitting the wrists.

Very few clubs will fancy meeting us in a qualifier and although I don't want it to happen I won't be surprised if Artur was to move on thereby providing us with significant financial clout.

I think we need a couple of real quality players in the summer. For me the Huns are more likely to need a complete overhaul.

  • At 09/02/08 19:48, Blogger EdwardUrsus said…

TinyTim :- I agree with you on that, for both clubs there is very little room for mistakes now and I think this will be a very tight finish. One thing I do think could be important is the way each squad reacts to the pressure of the situation and whether it inspires them to fight and dig for every ball or whether they lose their bottle. At times like this a players strength of mind can be as vital as his skill.

  • At 09/02/08 19:53, Blogger EdwardUrsus said…

CelticFirst :- I think you are exagerating a tad when you say Rangers are close to cracking. I'll be the first to admit that the recent transfer window wasn't the clubs finest hour but as far as the team goes I don't think they are near cracking. Today wasn't our best display agaianst a decent Falkirk side that played some good football (If they had a good finisher they would be far higher up the league)but we still scored two and lost none. As a few posters on here have said in relation to Celtic this is the time of year to grind out the results that win titles and I would put today down as an example of this. Yes there is room for a lot of improvement but on the team side at least things are going not too badly.

Spot on. There is a bravado among some Celtic supporters - not specifically on this blog - who think things will happen just because they say they will.

There is no evidence to suggest that Rangers are about to crack, or start dropping piles of points. And they do have 7 more points in the bag than we do.

I felt, prior to the cup game with Killie, that all being equal, we would not win the league. By that I meant that if we continued to play as we were playing, and Rangers didn't change how they were doing - then we would lose.

Signing new players does not put points in the bag. Translating these new players into better performances and better results is what counts. The Killie performance was a big step forward. However, we cannot afford it to be a one-off.

We have an awful lot to do if we are to regain the title this season.

Someone posted yesterday about special measures for the Celtic support in Barcelona.

Here is what I have read.

    ----

La Vanguardia (Barcelona's most serious daily newspaper) reported yesterday that Celtic fans travelling to Barcelona for the Champions' League game against Barcelona on 4 March will be held in Hall 7 of the Montjuïc exhibition centre, under the supervision of the police.

The idea is to contain the green-and-white wave, made up of 15,000 Celtic fans (only 6,000 or 7,000 of whom will have tickets for the match) in this area. There will be a covered area of 8,000 square-metres and an extensive open-air space alongside.

The Celtic fans will be able to buy beer at the site, but in a controlled way. There will also be games and other activities to entertain them in the build-up to the match.

They will be taken straight to the site from the airport and the authorities will attempt to stop those who don't have a ticket from having too good a time [tricky phrase - it literally means 'becoming too comfortable'].

In spite of Celtic's insistence that hooliganism is not a problem among its fans, the city authorities have decided to take a cautious approach because of the incidents involving Rangers fans last December (sic) during the Champions' League group stages.

"We are different," Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell, told El Mundo Deportivo.

He went on to say: "On our two previous visits to Barcelona there was no trouble. Our fans are peaceful and friendly." Lawwell also pointed out: "Ours is the only support to have won Fair Play awards from UEFA and from FIFA."

It's clear that Celtic is not completely in agreement with the city authorities' decision.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you. When any team wins a championship there is always a period when they will have to "grind out results", "win ugly" - call it what you will. And that is what Rangers are doing at the minute. I had hoped that with Kevin Thompson missing for a few weeks you would suffer. So far there's no sign of this.

In our favour we have two OF games left at Celtic Park and the new signings - especially Barry Robson will have a big impact.

The only thing we can do is adhere to the old adage "One game at a time mate"

As ah say their other away games will be the deciding factor.

Easter road last week 0-0 look for more of that in the coming months.

Lurgan53 :- As you say, one game at a time and this goes double at this time of year. I have to admit I would far rather we had to play you twice at Ibrox than the way it is. I still think there will be points dropped to others from each side before this title is settled. If we had bought to strengthen the midfield in the window I would be feeling a lot more confident.

In the case of the latest Ibrox Financial Report, everything that I have said...goes ...double!

But, as in all good Fairy Tales.. the Evil Guy gets his comeuppance, in the end...and the ending of the Ibrox Fairy Tale, shall be no different!

Haven't seen anything specific. The reports I've read (I translated the one in El Mundo Deportivo deliberately, there are a few snide comments in the one in La Vanguardia that are best left untranslated, and don't get me started on the comments section that follows on the website) seem to suggest that this will be the fate that awaits people travelling on official flights.

But, of course, people will have arranged to meet their mates in town. I don't know what will happen, but the key is the elections, which take place the Sunday after we're in town. It's further reaching than I thought.

The word on the street is that for the socialists to win the upcoming Spanish general elections, retaining Barcelona at city hall level will be crucial.

The socialist administration there faced enormous criticism after November's debacle and will not run the risk of that happening again.

Honest mister. It was a big bhoy and he must have ran away.

It is becoming obvious that the championship destination will hinge on how well we react to two sets of circumstances.
How we do after the CL games against Barca and whomever we draw in the elite 8.
The outcome of the remaining three games against Rangers, the first one of which will be vital.
This places us at a slight disadvantage as the first game will be at Ibrox, due to the spineless ineptitude of the SPL and SFA.
A victory at Ibrox for either side will be a great confidence booster and a stimulus for the run in.
Should we be lobbying for the first game played to be at CP regardless of the schedule?

Oleguer is playing his first game in three months.

A lot of people have wondered what makes it possible for him to waltz straight back into the team while Ronaldinho seems to need weeks to get back to the required level.

The answer is that, in defence, injuries have left Barcelona a bit short.

    Thirty-five minutes gone.

My daughters love Celtic as I do so perhaps that has been a factor.

Barcelona are well out of sorts. If Seville were 3-0 up it would be a fairer reflection.

Barcelona's options on the bench consist of Gudjohnsen, the jet-lagged Márquez and the unfit Ronaldinho.

Apart from them and new substitute goalie, Pinto, there are only three young lads from the youth team, who, coincidentally, are all called Víctor.

It's a good name for a footballer even though Davidson is probably more Con than Pro.

I think Skippy should stick his tongue oot at the ref tomorrow and get it over with Or maybe argue with a steward.

Sam and Jan should see us through the next three games.

I posted last night that I was a bit envious of those heading out to Barca. Reading the arrangements they have I'm not so sure. Isn't it a shame when a bunch of ne'erdowells spoil it for the rest!

March is going to be a crucial month for us in the tile push. At the moment we have 4 away games scheduled (6 including CL and Scottish Cup), but with the possibility of home games against the dark force and Utd. Come through March unscathed and we'll win it.

just remember that anyone who gets suspended as a result of a booking tomorrow the the ban doesnt start until feb 24..

as its two weeks from the offence..that means that the hearts game doesnt count for any bans unless its a red card..

I have complete confidence in wins tomorrow and next Saturday which will place us one point behind Rangers who will be going to Kilmarnock following a midweek tussle with Panathanaikos. We have had our blip, we have focus, we have a larger and better squad and we have 2 games to come at home against them. 3 in a row is assured.

Just in from at a night at the theatre with the cubs. Blood Brothers is a great play for anyone who wants to understand what KTF means.

I saw before I went out Caig Paterson nearly have sex with himself while telling everyone we are 7 points behind .

Hey we have to play them 3 times. I have the feeling this will be a love street season rather than a ml2 season.

He also adds he used to go to O'donoghue's in Shepherd's Bush but last time they had Man Utd on the main screen with 'tic reduced to a small tv above the door - plus it was the ICT away match! Any better suggestions for Central London gratefully received

    My dear,dear,dear friend...Thom the tim...@21.40.

I agree Wholeheatedly.(whit?...ed)( I know,I know...I have just created a noo woid! So... sue me!)

There are too many, cheap and uncalled for, Yellow cards being given against the perpetrators so named in your submission

The infantile shenanigans that we have to put up with from The Two Scotts... and...dare I mention.... also, Aiden... is downright, unacceptable...

It would be a very interesting and rewarding task...to someone ...not I!... if they investigated the number of Yellow briefs, that were awarded to that young Threesome, for Stupid , Silly and downright Inane...Backchat... to the Referee, in futile protest for a foul that had been awarded against them.

Do these young persons not know the the Referee is the Man with the Largest Screwdriver....?

I have on many an occasion...in fact it happened again during the last game... Noticed that... Aiden....after, his rival had dispossessed him.... would succumb, to the Red Mist... and make a ridiculous and unforgivable tackle from the rear, against his opponent... and consequently ....Aiden, was punished for this stupid foul....which really in all honesty, was the result of pure...unadulterated, PETULANCE...on the part of Aiden!

In a Game of Soccer, many a situation is absolutely unpreventable... it is the will of the Gods...

    Howevaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhha

Players should be in full control of their emotions at all time... there is no excuse for a player to act like a child...

And really, when all is said and done... to give in to flashes of anger and revenge....in any sport... is the mark of the Not Ready For Prime Time Player.

    If I were King...

Those three young worthies... would be a this time... be suffering the loss in their incomes...of THOUSANDS OF POUNDS!

They say that the way to a Man's Heart is through his stomach.....
    In this case, I say..
To change a Man's Outlook...tout de suite... is through a Reduction in his Bank Account!

You have pointed four squarely to a matter that has been, so far, been beneath the Radar.

Whereas, it should have been vigorously discussed.

The loss of Key players...such as these Three, as the result of their amateurish behavior and the sheer recklessness, on their part...

could very well be the deciding factor in where the S.P.L. flag , flies next year .

    Kojo.
yer pal.....who always likes what ye have tae say.

Nice comments from Big Jan about getting the captains armband.

In the interview he says that hes not too bothered about what people think of him as long as the Management staff are happy with him.

Maybe a backhanded dig at the fans reaction to his recent displays.

For me i like the bigman, its a hard thing to replace Chris Sutton and i think we compare the two, when thats unfair on Jan as Chris was a player that only comes round a few times in our lives. A versatile natural footballer and in my eyes under appreciated in his fantastic Celtic career.

Heres big Jans take on getting the armband, the biys got green blood i tell ye.

“It was a great honour for me to be captain of Celtic and I hope someone took a picture of it because it would be framed after I stop playing football,”

You're right. Celticbars is a bit out of date, as a lot of the pubs on there have either shut down or don't show the games anymore. Nearest to Victoria will be either
THE COCK TAVERN, PHOENIX RD, EUSTON or THE KINGDOM, 229 KILBURN RD NW6 7JG (Spirit of 67 CSC) www.spiritof67csc.co.uk
They will both have the game on.

    I'm a finance numptie.

All I can tell you is that John J is the only member of the family not to have got involved in The Gap. Don't know why.

Seville are down to ten men. Keita is off for a second yellow for a bad foul.

Barcelona had a shout for a penalty from the Keita free-kick (which Ronaldinho took). Not given.

Barcelona are the only team that looks like winning this now.

    An amazing turnaround.

    Seven to go.
