Financial anomaly that undermines football balance sheets

Most businesses have the odd anomalous regulation and football is no different. A case in point is the balance sheet valuation, or non-valuation, to be more precise, of players developed through a club’s youth system.

Let me give you an example, Celtic bought Barry Robson from Dundee United for a total fee in the region of £1m, while loaning Jim O’Brian to United for a nominal fee.

These transactions will have very little impact on the Celtic accounts for this season, as Rosbson’s fee will be amortised to the profit and loss account evenly over the period of his contract. Celtic paid no money for O’Brian, so accounting rules state that they must show the player’s registration as having zero value on the books.

Technically, however, Celtic and Dundee United were free to set whatever value they wanted on the two transactions. If Celtic asked for £1m to loan O’Brian and United asked for £2m for the transfer of Robson, the same amount of money would have changed hands between the clubs, but Celtic would immediately have £1m more on their balance sheet for a player previously valued at zero, although over time, the amortised change for Robson would be greater.

This did not happen, of course, but take a look at what has been going on over the city this season. Rangers spent the best part of £8m in the summer and then sold a player for £8m who came through the Ibrox youth system, and so had a zero value in the accounts.

That £8m spend will have a small impact on the Rangers account this season, as it will be amortised to the P&L over the period of the player’s contract, but the £8m sale goes straight onto their balance sheet. Rangers net spend is close to zero, but their year-end accounts will be in the region of £6m better.

There is a lesson from this; if you need a short term financial fix, buying and selling players in equal measure can add millions of pounds to the book value of your football club, remember, though, short term fixes need to paid for in the long term.

Apologies if you have been trying to access Celtic Quick News today. My datacentre put my server down for scheduled maintenance which turned into a major network trauma.

However way it is dressed up .Selling Hutton for £9 million will do wonders for Rangers finances.
If they win the league and we fail to get CL football ,the financial outlook of Rangers will swing back to an almost even keel, compared to ourselves.

If they win the league i fear that Rangers will be able to outspend us in the summer, and outbid us .

If we win the league they would be less likely to gamble on purchasing expensive players before they have qualified for the CL.
Which in itself, diminishes there chances of qualifying.

Celtic winning the SPL this season would be a serious blow to there short and medium term ability to compete with us on a financial basis.

Rangers have now won something like 31 of there last 32 league games.
The have just racked up there sixth consecutive clean sheet.

Celtic have no margin for error. We will probably have to win almost all of our remaining league fixtures to win the SPL.
    Tommorrow is a massive game.

The players must rise to the challenge now.

Ronaldinho will be on the bench tonight in Barcelona's away game to Seville.

They have a lot of players out: Eto'o, Puyol, Deco, Zambrotta and Bojan will all be out. Rafa Márquez hasn't trained with the team all week, having arrived back from a game with Mexico at midday on Friday (he played the 90 minutes).

Kick-off is at 9.00pm Glasgow time. It will be a cracker.

I don't dispute your numbers, but Rangers are hanging on here. Tomorrow is crucial for Celtic because any further slips will relieve the pressure on them. We need to keep that pressure on. They are close to cracking.

If the unthinkable happens and we don't win the league it's not time to be slitting the wrists.

Very few clubs will fancy meeting us in a qualifier and although I don't want it to happen I won't be surprised if Artur was to move on thereby providing us with significant financial clout.

I think we need a couple of real quality players in the summer. For me the Huns are more likely to need a complete overhaul.

  • At 09/02/08 19:48, Blogger EdwardUrsus said…

TinyTim :- I agree with you on that, for both clubs there is very little room for mistakes now and I think this will be a very tight finish. One thing I do think could be important is the way each squad reacts to the pressure of the situation and whether it inspires them to fight and dig for every ball or whether they lose their bottle. At times like this a players strength of mind can be as vital as his skill.

  • At 09/02/08 19:53, Blogger EdwardUrsus said…

CelticFirst :- I think you are exagerating a tad when you say Rangers are close to cracking. I'll be the first to admit that the recent transfer window wasn't the clubs finest hour but as far as the team goes I don't think they are near cracking. Today wasn't our best display agaianst a decent Falkirk side that played some good football (If they had a good finisher they would be far higher up the league)but we still scored two and lost none. As a few posters on here have said in relation to Celtic this is the time of year to grind out the results that win titles and I would put today down as an example of this. Yes there is room for a lot of improvement but on the team side at least things are going not too badly.

Spot on. There is a bravado among some Celtic supporters - not specifically on this blog - who think things will happen just because they say they will.

There is no evidence to suggest that Rangers are about to crack, or start dropping piles of points. And they do have 7 more points in the bag than we do.

I felt, prior to the cup game with Killie, that all being equal, we would not win the league. By that I meant that if we continued to play as we were playing, and Rangers didn't change how they were doing - then we would lose.

Signing new players does not put points in the bag. Translating these new players into better performances and better results is what counts. The Killie performance was a big step forward. However, we cannot afford it to be a one-off.

We have an awful lot to do if we are to regain the title this season.

Someone posted yesterday about special measures for the Celtic support in Barcelona.

Here is what I have read.

    ----

La Vanguardia (Barcelona's most serious daily newspaper) reported yesterday that Celtic fans travelling to Barcelona for the Champions' League game against Barcelona on 4 March will be held in Hall 7 of the Montjuïc exhibition centre, under the supervision of the police.

The idea is to contain the green-and-white wave, made up of 15,000 Celtic fans (only 6,000 or 7,000 of whom will have tickets for the match) in this area. There will be a covered area of 8,000 square-metres and an extensive open-air space alongside.

The Celtic fans will be able to buy beer at the site, but in a controlled way. There will also be games and other activities to entertain them in the build-up to the match.

They will be taken straight to the site from the airport and the authorities will attempt to stop those who don't have a ticket from having too good a time [tricky phrase - it literally means 'becoming too comfortable'].

In spite of Celtic's insistence that hooliganism is not a problem among its fans, the city authorities have decided to take a cautious approach because of the incidents involving Rangers fans last December (sic) during the Champions' League group stages.

"We are different," Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell, told El Mundo Deportivo.

He went on to say: "On our two previous visits to Barcelona there was no trouble. Our fans are peaceful and friendly." Lawwell also pointed out: "Ours is the only support to have won Fair Play awards from UEFA and from FIFA."

It's clear that Celtic is not completely in agreement with the city authorities' decision.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you. When any team wins a championship there is always a period when they will have to "grind out results", "win ugly" - call it what you will. And that is what Rangers are doing at the minute. I had hoped that with Kevin Thompson missing for a few weeks you would suffer. So far there's no sign of this.

In our favour we have two OF games left at Celtic Park and the new signings - especially Barry Robson will have a big impact.

The only thing we can do is adhere to the old adage "One game at a time mate"

Easter road last week 0-0 look for more of that in the coming months.

Lurgan53 :- As you say, one game at a time and this goes double at this time of year. I have to admit I would far rather we had to play you twice at Ibrox than the way it is. I still think there will be points dropped to others from each side before this title is settled. If we had bought to strengthen the midfield in the window I would be feeling a lot more confident.

In the case of the latest Ibrox Financial Report, everything that I have said...goes ...double!

But, as in all good Fairy Tales.. the Evil Guy gets his comeuppance, in the end...and the ending of the Ibrox Fairy Tale, shall be no different!

Haven't seen anything specific. The reports I've read (I translated the one in El Mundo Deportivo deliberately, there are a few snide comments in the one in La Vanguardia that are best left untranslated, and don't get me started on the comments section that follows on the website) seem to suggest that this will be the fate that awaits people travelling on official flights.

But, of course, people will have arranged to meet their mates in town. I don't know what will happen, but the key is the elections, which take place the Sunday after we're in town. It's further reaching than I thought.

The word on the street is that for the socialists to win the upcoming Spanish general elections, retaining Barcelona at city hall level will be crucial.

The socialist administration there faced enormous criticism after November's debacle and will not run the risk of that happening again.

Honest mister. It was a big bhoy and he must have ran away.

It is becoming obvious that the championship destination will hinge on how well we react to two sets of circumstances.
How we do after the CL games against Barca and whomever we draw in the elite 8.
The outcome of the remaining three games against Rangers, the first one of which will be vital.
This places us at a slight disadvantage as the first game will be at Ibrox, due to the spineless ineptitude of the SPL and SFA.
A victory at Ibrox for either side will be a great confidence booster and a stimulus for the run in.
Should we be lobbying for the first game played to be at CP regardless of the schedule?

Oleguer is playing his first game in three months.

A lot of people have wondered what makes it possible for him to waltz straight back into the team while Ronaldinho seems to need weeks to get back to the required level.

The answer is that, in defence, injuries have left Barcelona a bit short.

Something I have found strange through the years is that I've never missed not having a son. I don't know why that is.

If indeed I did have a son I know I would love him dearly.

My daughters love Celtic as I do so perhaps that has been a factor.

Barcelona's options on the bench consist of Gudjohnsen, the jet-lagged Márquez and the unfit Ronaldinho.

Apart from them and new substitute goalie, Pinto, there are only three young lads from the youth team, who, coincidentally, are all called Víctor.

It's a good name for a footballer even though Davidson is probably more Con than Pro.

I posted last night that I was a bit envious of those heading out to Barca. Reading the arrangements they have I'm not so sure. Isn't it a shame when a bunch of ne'erdowells spoil it for the rest!

March is going to be a crucial month for us in the tile push. At the moment we have 4 away games scheduled (6 including CL and Scottish Cup), but with the possibility of home games against the dark force and Utd. Come through March unscathed and we'll win it.

    My dear,dear,dear friend...Thom the tim...@21.40.

I agree Wholeheatedly.(whit?...ed)( I know,I know...I have just created a noo woid! So... sue me!)

There are too many, cheap and uncalled for, Yellow cards being given against the perpetrators so named in your submission

The infantile shenanigans that we have to put up with from The Two Scotts... and...dare I mention.... also, Aiden... is downright, unacceptable...

It would be a very interesting and rewarding task...to someone ...not I!... if they investigated the number of Yellow briefs, that were awarded to that young Threesome, for Stupid , Silly and downright Inane...Backchat... to the Referee, in futile protest for a foul that had been awarded against them.

Do these young persons not know the the Referee is the Man with the Largest Screwdriver....?

I have on many an occasion...in fact it happened again during the last game... Noticed that... Aiden....after, his rival had dispossessed him.... would succumb, to the Red Mist... and make a ridiculous and unforgivable tackle from the rear, against his opponent... and consequently ....Aiden, was punished for this stupid foul....which really in all honesty, was the result of pure...unadulterated, PETULANCE...on the part of Aiden!

In a Game of Soccer, many a situation is absolutely unpreventable... it is the will of the Gods...

    Howevaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhha

Players should be in full control of their emotions at all time... there is no excuse for a player to act like a child...

And really, when all is said and done... to give in to flashes of anger and revenge....in any sport... is the mark of the Not Ready For Prime Time Player.

    If I were King...

Those three young worthies... would be a this time... be suffering the loss in their incomes...of THOUSANDS OF POUNDS!

They say that the way to a Man's Heart is through his stomach.....
    In this case, I say..
To change a Man's Outlook...tout de suite... is through a Reduction in his Bank Account!

You have pointed four squarely to a matter that has been, so far, been beneath the Radar.

Whereas, it should have been vigorously discussed.

The loss of Key players...such as these Three, as the result of their amateurish behavior and the sheer recklessness, on their part...

could very well be the deciding factor in where the S.P.L. flag , flies next year .

Nice comments from Big Jan about getting the captains armband.

In the interview he says that hes not too bothered about what people think of him as long as the Management staff are happy with him.

Maybe a backhanded dig at the fans reaction to his recent displays.

For me i like the bigman, its a hard thing to replace Chris Sutton and i think we compare the two, when thats unfair on Jan as Chris was a player that only comes round a few times in our lives. A versatile natural footballer and in my eyes under appreciated in his fantastic Celtic career.

Heres big Jans take on getting the armband, the biys got green blood i tell ye.

“It was a great honour for me to be captain of Celtic and I hope someone took a picture of it because it would be framed after I stop playing football,”

I agree wholeheartedly...this time!... with, what the very astute Mr. Harrison has/had to point out.

Also, while we are on the subject of Cycles...

I had a discussion on here, recently ... on the FOLLY of studying History...

The following Respected and Venerable Aphorism... should be more properly titled... an Endearing and ENDURING.... FABLE!

The Aphorism...I am referring to, is of course......

"Those who do not study the mistakes in History...are doomed to Repeat them!"

    Poppycock... Pureee Balderdash!

Man will ALWAYS REPEAT THE SAME MISTAKES ....OVER AND OVER AND OVER.. whether one wastes his energy... researching the follies and mistakes of the past...

Man will still make the same old same old Faux Pases( Pases?...ed)( Don't blame me...if it is no right... Diane jist told me...and Diane...is...Nevah wrang!)

And the Smart Mr. Harrison is only verifying my conclusion.

Our Collective ears are now being made aware of the Resounding.. POP! ..of a Bubble Bursting....

It is only ONE BUBBLE!... but it is a Collective one... which contains, as well as The Housing and Property ... the Banking Sector ..and consequently.. the Employment Sector...

The Eighteen Year Cycle which he refers to... may in fact be a fact...I do not know... and.. frankly, I do not care...

Because... I know that after this Economic Downturn runs its course...
    AND IT WILL...

    And...After, another Period of Prosperity...

Wella....do I need to tell you..what will once again be in store?

    Na! I thought so...

    Therefore...

Forget the studying and all of the forecasting based on PAST CYLCLES...

It is a complete waste of time

We .. are.. VICTIMS OF OUR HUMANITY...

and to err is but Human.. and to FORGIVE .....is for SUCKERS!

    Kojo,

Yep, some, if not most of the yellows picked up by the three boys could have been prevented.A mistimed tackle can be unfortunate.

That is not to say that they were all deserved, but in the words of Gordon Strachan, " They gave the ref a decision to make" and they will make it.

He said that after Thompson was sent off after his lunge on Novo, yon time.

I applauded the philosophy of subbing any reserve or youth player who showed dissent and while that is not practical in the first team, there should be other measures to discourage such self harming actions.

Wee story to tell about myself, I’ll cut a long story short, maybe to explain why I’m a Tim, you be the judge.

1972 : Put into a home, 8 yrs old ( List D school, Gryffe, Bridge of Weir) nobody to look after me (Mum in hospital, getting an ulcer op) first week there guy called Charlie Tate (12) from Ayr asks me in the grounds of the place, “ You a Fenian ?” “ No, I’m a Catholic “
“Schmaaaack !” across my face, fell on the ground, got up, no tears.,
“Ah said are you a Fenian ??” “No, I’m a Catholic”…….”Schmaaaack” This time I sat on the ground, tears rolling down my eyes, and he asked me again, “Are you a Fenian ???”
“I’ve already told you what I am , why don’t you go away ?”

Unless you have no imagination, you can guess what happened next, I got beat up, re-assured it would happen again, unless I admitted I was a “Fenian”.

I was there three weeks, probably the longest three weeks of my life, and I got beat up, but was never beaten 
I’m now in my 40’s, and it’s took me that long to face this, is’nt amazing how things stick with you ?

I apologise if I’ve spoiled your dinner, but I feel a helluva lot better getting that off my chest.

    Oh, and that’s why I’m a Tim.

Winning the title this year will see the minty house of cards come tumbling down, however this could be the best thing for them as I suspect there will be plenty of potential investors ready to step in if debt is written off due to a bankrupt declaration, I did ask recently if this was a possibility and never got an answer, so nI'm taking the silence as an affirmative.

I hear what you're saying but I'm not sure what you're talking about.

    Example

A Hutton.....through the ranks....no transfer fee does not mean no value. Including overheads, salary etc, over the 7 year piece that hutton was there it might have cost rankers in the region of, lets say £100k per year to train and pay him. Grand total £700k. He must surely have an automatic asset value of at least that amount. Since the start of this season he's been performing to a reasonable standard, pushing his value upwards, ie, to buy someone from the SPHell of the same standard say £1,000,000.00. His value, to rankers as an asset must now be in the region of £1.7m.
Bearing in mind that the "Premiership" (anything to sound different) are paying over inflated prices, it is absolutely fair for Rankers to value him at say £9,000,000.00 only because his Scottish value to date is worth in the region of £1.7m, and that some bampot English club are willing to pay £7,000,000.00 to purchase him. Whether said english club actually buy him is neither here nor there, the fact that they have put that value on him gives Rankers good reason to do likewise. The same goes, therefore for any other player they have brought through their ranks.
The moral of the story as far as I can see is get as many young bucks on your books as possible and put a POTENTIAL value on them for as much as you like, and hey presto, you are all of a sudden the richest club in the world (on paper) Or am I talking bull?

I don't think you can write off salary costs and turn it into an asset valuation.
I believe salary costs are an ongoing expense. Therefore Hutton's or anyone's wages over the period when he was being nurtured do not equate to his asset value.
This is from a non bean counter, so maybe a purveyor of smoke and mirrors can contradict me.

Kojo emotion and reaction can be integral parts of a players make up. As a case in point consider Roy Keane. His occasional redmists and volcanic reactions went a long way to making him one of the most feared players in the EPL. As for revenge think of the assault on Alfie Inge Haaland. Got him sent off but my God it didn't half win him some space in future matches. His ferocity was far from his only asset but it was an essential part of him as a player.

  • At 09/02/08 23:38, Blogger The Judge said…

Honestly. Who cares? Amortisation is a paper trick. It always has been. David Murray has demonstrated what you can do with paper tricks. This site championed a huge cash splurge a few seasons ago on the basis of ammortisation when the charge to the p&l account meant absolutely zero in real terms. In reality, the ammortisation of fixed tangible assets should have little or no bearing on what football clubs budget for spending in the market on players.

Ghuys.........at the risk of getting really boring.......asset should be replaced by value.....a hypothetical scenario.

I've just started a service type company. It cost me £500k to start up. Ive just won three contracts for three years duration each. Each contract is worth £2,000,000.00 turnover per annum

Therefore, "potential annual turnover is £6,000,000.00

    Over Three years, £18,000,000.00

Running costs = £4,000,000.00 per annum

Profit over 3 years should be £6,000,000.00

Before kicking a ball, a new buyer sees the potential and promptly offers me £2,000,000.00 for the company. I accept making a £1.5m profit on my outlay.

1 day later the three contracts are cancelled, therefore the company in real terms was worth nowt, but, at 1 point was worth millions.

What I didn't tell the buyers was that I knew the contracts were to be cancelled.

the moral of the story is make it look good on paper

the moral of the story is....you can fool all of the people some of the time......and you can fool some of the people all of the time....but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.

You and I both know that costs incurred in business are many.

With a bit of financial shifting, paperwork lifting and clever monetary fiscal management, all can seem rosey in a garden.

Our main concern should be the three points from Pittodrie on Sunday, which we are more than capable of getting.

The riches for Celtic remain in being Champions of Scotland, for the foreseeable future.

I know where I'm going , but more importantly, I know where I come from, if there is one constant in this complex conundrum......it's the Tic, they keep me sane, even when they drive nuts !

I will deal with my problems, and face them. That is why I think supporting Celtic is a spiritual thing, not a football thing, they have gave me more support, thru bad times, thru song, thru goals, thru experience (Seville !), thru meeting Tims, it's all good stuff.

Nice to see he enjoyed his stint as captain. It's always good to have a player who takes pride in wearing the Hoops.

    kojo,
interesting post at 22.59. it was your last sentence that interested me the most.
i agree that there will always be cycles, good times, bad times but i think the interesting thing is for whom......? over the last 100-150 years that might have meant more prosperity for more people but might we be reaching a 'tipping point'.
there will always be a 'cream', meaning the people who win or lucky ones like us, along for the ride but we have to share that cream among more every year. can we find enough to feed the beast? will the cream turn weak and run out. who knows? everything comes to an end is as true as history is there to be written.
    anyway, enough banalities!

Watching Newcastle today i came to the conclusion what a waste of a talent Michael Owen is in that team. The boy looks so disheartened at that club and in need of a move.

Hopefully, he has overcome all his injuries to become the goalscorer we know.

Looking at Owen today reminded me of Chirs Sutton spell at Chelsea. It never happened for him their and a move was needed to re ignite him.

Owen is at a stage of his career where he would like to win trophies and medals and participate in CL. A bhoy with goal scoring prowess deserves it.

Like John Hartson said in an interview with Celtic TV he can look back in a career where he has won honours, competed in europes premier stage and played in many big games.

If Owen can get a clear run of games from now to the end of the season and stay clear of serious injury i believe that Celtic should make their move and bring the bhoy to Paradise. Like Chris Sutton who excelled when he joined i believe Owen would be the same. Naka, Aiden & Koki would have a field day supplying him.

I believe Michael would jump at the chance to come to us and Newcastle would not be hard to deal with as he will be in the last year of his contract. Michael is a Celtic fan and let's just say certain memebers of his family would over joyed if such a scenario was to happen.

I have came to the conclusion that we should

    FREE THE OWEN 1!!

The number 7 awaits you my Bhoy.

I agree with your assertion about stupid bookings. But just because a Celtic player is booked does not mean it was justified. Scott Macdonald is on the threshold of a suspension, but this includes his totally unjustified booking against Gretna for celebrating a last minute match winning goal. Whereas super Barry was not booked for grabbing an Aberdeen player by the throat, Whittaker was not booked for a straight legged assault on a Hibs player. Bhoy has just arrived in and he reminds me that Scott was also booked by McCurry for being tripped by two Kilmarnock defenders, and by McCurry after McGregor stamped on him twice. It's harder to defend Scott Brown, but none of his bookings were more deserved than Fergusons or Whittakers. But I am just a twisted, paranoid, aul haun!

on the football...i expect a convincing victory tomorrow in fine style....

...murray has always made money on the back of a rising market...he did it with rangers initially, he did it with steel and he was doing it with property....what the downturn in football and property have proved is that he has not been able to make money in a falling market....why is that...because he is permanently overstretched.....when his football operation hit the buffers big time, it survived because steel and property were still going up...he has since sold his most profitable steel business....right now it is firesale time in commercial property...but his balance sheet isn't able to support an across the board writedown to that level in commercial property...steel sales have slowed....commercial property is in dire straights.....and he was £700 million in debt 12 months ago....it could be way more now......edward may ponder that these circumstances have more to do with the farcical january window than any italian trip at the 11th hour.......

I think ye done alright, whats an 8yr old to do. Hail Hail.

Ye didnae forget and I, oh yes I know it's a pain on the soul to still have it hanging over ye. I moved a lot when I was a kid so the different bullies where left behind but I always wished for the oppertunity a gallusness of my dear younger half-bro(incidentelly not a Tim but an honest family man).

Him being younger by 7yrs and 23 at the time, drinking on a Sat afternoon he left us for a moment, making his excuses as he turned his attention to a slightly older patron who arrived at the bar. 'Do you remember me he says?' his communicado recognising by introduction by name and welcoming like an old 'friend'...'aye it's wee K how ye doin?' and from that moment, a wonderful moment in time for K, he reminded him, with furious and immediate intimicay that their previous relationship 8 to 10 ears previous had not been forgotten.

Sometimes catholic thinking doesn't suffice, a hun made me me admire his spirit that day.

We don't all get the chances to make others 'atone' but when you stood up for yourself then, I can guarantee that that lad looked over his shoulder for ye later in life, although you were never fortunate enough to welcome him as an 'old friend' later.

I hope your happy now, these things trouble us in middle-age; be happy in yourself and be sure that bully has had a more pain received through his attitude than you have my friend as a 'happy to be a Tim' person you are.

Love, Peace and shout C'mon The Ceeeeltic!!!

10 days ago I had a very brief taste of how you must be feeling. I am a lucky man, and just thank god that the doctors on duty were able to give me back my boy (who came home yesterday). My heart really goes out to you both.

Again, apologies for being so late with this but I have not been online to read or post.

    StevieS -

We can only hope that the support for Dick Byrne and Oldtim67 on here will have given them some additional strength to help them through the awful period they have had to endure.

I am delighted to hear that your boy is home, and I wish you and yours all the best.

Correct me if I’m wrong, and apologies if this has been brought up previously, but was Allan Hutton, being a product of their youth academy – which I believe is a totally separate entity from RFC – not an asset of the academy?

A player in effect, leased to RFC, in a bizarre parody of business of the football kind.

Won’t some of the money from the transfer fee, if not all, be due the academy? (Minty)

Kitalba ;- I'm not 100% sure on this one but I think Mr Hutton was a full emloyee of RFC before the new set up with the youth system came in so no money is due. I agree with you that it seems a wierd way of doing things.

Neither am I but I was just thinking that with Rangers in the position they are in, both league position and financial position, why didn’t they spend some hard cash in the transfer window. They have got previous.

If they are in that … what’s another inch or two.

Winning the league this year is so important to both teams, for varying reasons, but Rangers may have shot themselves in the foot by not strengthening. Maybe they just couldn’t for whatever reason.

This made me think of the academy and its potential claim to the asset.

    Somebody will know.

    disinteresting fact
I don't know if you know this or not but the Monaco based super agent that brings a lot of french players to rfc was a colleague of
    mine at A3
I was on white he was on red

Kitalba :- Once again I have to agree, we lost one of out top players dring the window, I know many on here didn't rate him but I honestly think that was due to green tinted specs. After losing him in my opinion at least 2/3rds of the money should have been reinvested in the team. I know that quite a few folk on here tend to think that "speculate to accumulate" is almost blasphemy (though a recent example of MON tends to put up a good counter point to that view) but a failure to do so in the recent window could cause us to lose the title from pole position.

Kitalba - the farcical situation of RFC 'buying' players from Ranger Youth Development relates directly to Paul's article. It allows RFC to give players that have come through the system an on paper value that they otherwise wouldn't have. I've no doubt there's a scale eg £250k for a squad player, £1M for a guaranteed first teamer etc. Much like they're inflated property values, it allows the accounts to be boosted by placing an arbitrary value on their youth players.

All this was explained to me by an accountant on a training course I did

I would be amazed if money actually moved from one company to the other.

    Edward,

Don't you think the timing of the Hutton transfer (a couple of days before the deadline) was interesting.

Do you take tha Rangers line that Hutton didn't want to leave and only the size of the offer persuaded him at the last minute to reluctantly sign?

    OR

Are you with the cynics who believe that with transfer going through at the last knockings and the management team abroad - the Rangers fans couldn't put pressue on to ensure the money was spent strenghtening the team?

I appreciate the association with Paul’s thread leader and I’m pretty sure that the mint has his finger in the Youth Academy Pie as he has everything else Rangers, but was most interesed in where the money and the amount actually was addressed to. Who actuallly owned the player? Whether it was RFC or a subsiduary of MIH.

I've said it before, you've gotta watch these accountant types.

    Hail Hail

Should be writing an Essay on the NHS and Privatisation right now but can't concentrate due to the anticipation of today's game. Been dying for this game to come quickly after the victory against Moanin Jefferies mob.

I believe Hinkel will start today at RB, too bad for young Caddis but his time will come against Barca. The big questions are will Robson & Samaras start or will they come off the bench?

If Robson starts, who will be drop? If he does start I think you will see Naka drop with Aiden moving to the right and Robson on the left. Personally I would drop Skoosh as he has been out of sorts lately but WGS might not want to do that as the Laptop Loyal will jump on it to rehash stories of WGS and Skoosh fallen out with each other, followed on by stories of Skoosh wanting to leave (usually just before a big games). WGS gets paid handsomely for making big decisions like that don't be afraid to make controversial decisions.

The sideshow for today's game is that the same sheep-loving season ticket holders are going to be sitting behind WGS and Pendry, do you think that Aberdeen will be smart enough not to put the same jobsworth of a steward there. I hate to be WGS and Pendry today, the abuse they are going to get today.

    Mon the Hoops

3-0 for the Bhoys, JVH first goal with Robson getting the last.

    Who is the MIB today?
