The Green Garrincha runs the show against Aberdeen

Barry Robson’s goal against Aberdeen yesterday was a treat. He was seconds on the field when Celtic were awarded a free kick, Robson called for the ball and a scriptwriter to be in attendance, before dispatching a shot into the net with his first touch.

Roy Race wouldn’t dare try to sell you a fable like that; a Joe Craig moment that you and I will refer to many years from now.

Like Robson’s goal, the vast majority of goals are scored when the player takes three or less touches before hitting the net, which makes Aiden McGeady’s goal all the more notable. He drifted right to collect the ball before feigning past Jackie McNamara and dispatching a left foot shot, his 10th touch, low into the net from 20 yards.

There was even better to come.

McGeady mesmerised three Aberdeen defenders with a double drag-back, which left him in enough space inside the box to flight a cross for Scott McDonald to score Celtic’s fourth. On this form, the Green Garrincha is close to unplayable.

While Celtic dazzled from the wings, Scott Brown hit form in central midfield and played his best game in weeks, ably assisted by Paul Hartley.

Keep it up, Celtic.

I posted some ramblings the other night about glittering gems of delight in a sea of silver, meaning those special moments in matches that stick with you. Not just the goals or the winning, but the hooks that pull you back into the moment.

Not often you get two in one game, but Aiden’s dance and Barry’s first foot for Celtic will live long in the memory. So much joy in a single game of football.

It was a treat to be able to watch the second half live on a big screen in a London Celtic bar. That Aiden moment, leading to Scotty’s second, was very special and will be talked about for many years.

Information, please: is there any problem over this coming Saturday’s fixture at CP? I got confused; haven’t been able to blog much at all lately, but I thought I’d seen something on this board about the game giving way to a cup reply? I probably misread a post but perhaps someone could confirm. I’ll be briefly up home in Scotland, visiting someone who’s sick. With the team in this kind of form, it’d be fantastic to get to a home game, if possible -and maybe the fabled BBs beforehand too.

I was one of the singing Celts in Pittodrie yesterday , and have to say that was one of the best performances I have ever witnessed ever.

Maybe it's because I'm off the drink for Lent and went to this one sober, but I left the ground smiling and recalling different bits of magic.

    As said, McGeady was unplayable.
Not only did he have a hand in the first 4 goals, but one other moment of magic came when the ball came dropping over his shoulder in the 2nd half. Normally you would hope for your player to control it and get the head up. Aiden didn't take it in, instead choosing to nutmeg the oncoming player with his first touch then running past him.

Seriously, I think someone mentioned yesterday, but I did not want that game to finish. Scott Brown & Paul Hartley may actually be out there still playing!

Here we go to 3 in a row!!!

I was out most of yesterday and missed the game live but thanks to the wonder that is Sky+ saw it late last night.

Aiden was wonderful. What a game. The Zidane turn was a joy to behold, leaving three defenders in his wake - and then a perfect cross.

Aiden has added two crucial things to his game this season: pace and a final ball. How many times in the past did we see him beat three defenders but fail to deliver? Not now.

A shoe in for Player of the Year. I just hope that Real Madrid weren't watching yesterday.

I can't see any reason for cup fixtures to affect our game against Hearts.

Celtic are out of the CIS cup and safely through to the Scotish Cup quarters against Aberdeen.

Hearts were knocked out of the CIS by Rangers and from the SC by Motherwell.

Only a plague of locusts (or rain or snow) is stopping this one.

    See you at BB's.

Hinkel was shaky yesterday and could have cost us a couple of goals. Perhaps young Paul Caddis should have retained his place? He certainly deserved to on last weeks performance! On Aiden, can you appeal a booking or just a red card? Shocking decision. He has the potential to terrorise Barca the way we might fear Messi! Here’s hoping!!
That’s 2 sparkling performances playing football the Glasgow Celtic way. Another few of these back to back and I might be prepared to repent!

It's a testimony to the good form of Gary Caldwell that he's beginning to please some people but I remain convinced that he and McManus are the number one partnership at the club. Bearing in mind that yesterday's goal (not caused by any lack of aerial prowess) was the first we'd conceded in circa 500 minutes of football.

Never mind all that, how refreshing is it to be genuinely excited by Celtic's form and be talking about improving an already winning and functioning team. McGeady and Nakamura in the team with the suddenly mobile dutchman ahead of them make Maloney a distant memory (at long last!).

Bring on a home game at long last!

    Paul67,

    no comment on the referee?

Withoug entering bias into the equation, surely the performance is worthy of note on it's own before analysing any patterns in the decisions.

    The fans want to know:

When is a penalty not a penalty? Scott Booth suggested that rugby tackles are not a penalty when the other team is winning comfortably.

When is a sending off not a sending off? My understanding were there were 2 main criteria: last man and stopping a clear goalscoring opportunity. When bothe canditions are satisfied is it reduced to a yellow?

When does an innocuous foul, first of the match, warrant a booking? Is it when your name is Aiden McGeady?

In the EPL these decisions are scrutinised and referees are brought to task. England, as a whole, welcomes an open discussion on all sorts of refereeing decisions. They deserve credit for this and hopefully others can follow.

I though Aiden was immense. Leaps and bounds on from the good plywe he was last year.

In his after match interview he mentioned cristiano ronaldo as a role model in terms of his goal scoring, then backtracked modestly from comparing himself to the Portuguese. I thought that c. Ronaldo would have been proud of the turn in the box, and would have been delighted to put in an overall performace like Aiden's. I'm sure that SSM has the contract situation well in hand, but we need to leave Aiden in no doubt that we love him. Let's see him in Jinky's, Kenny's and Henrik's 7 next season.

Also, kudos to Skippy for his professionalism when he was removed. I don't doubt his passion, and he showed that he will do the best thing for the team, even if it's sit on the bench and let someone else have a pop.

I seem to recall David Beckham deliberately banjoing someone late in a match to earn himself a yellow card, thus a suspension from the next Eng-ur-land match which was against Andorra (or a country of equal international standing)leaving him available for a crunch match.

Does anyone think that any of our bhoys looming precariously (oooh, big word there from Panda Hands !)close to a suspension for the upcoming Glasgow Derbies should do the same, rendering the MIB conspiracy useless??

Since Naka's work was right in front of our support yesterday in the first half, it was easy to see the influence this lad has on the team going forward.

Also, I was very impressed by his overall work rate, helping out on the way back and cutting infield to help Scott Brown (Not that he needed it yesterday).

This lad oozes class, as if that wasn't already known, and along with McGeady, was a joy to watch yesterday!

I would put some of December down to missing teh Holy Goalie as well as our Defencive injuries. But yes, Naka has become a big influence (Isn't that why he won player of teh year last year?)

Players know that they can be booked for any foul at any time.
However we Celtic supporters are seeing a pattern developing where three of our young players are being booked on a regular basis, usually for non violent offences. It seems that no immediate solution is available. Any statement from the club or manager may make things worse and the players aren`t exactly endangering their opponents.
Meantime it`s our job to give these referees pelters!

How many CL games did Naka play in this season ? Lets not get carried away about Nakas contribution this season.

He´s a fabulous player who hasn´t been rested in two years but he´s just had 3 months off with a knee injury. He´s been back injury free for 4-5 weeks now. He´s yet to complete 90 minutes. I´d like to see him pick up his performances from here on in. He certainly doesn´t look that hungry.

As a skeptic, i try not to get bogged down with the whole 'everyone is against us' sentiment which resonates through every Celtic forum and public bar.

However, i find that every game i go to i am being delivered every shell of ammo to take shots at this stance by refereeing performances which simply beggar belief. There are too many incidents to go into detail, suffice it to say some days they should swap their whistles for Elmer Fud style hunting caps and a sawn off 'Over Under'

How long can the governing bodies stand by and watch their 'Men in Black' destroy this everyman game of ours. Although, I suppose they are only foot soldiers taking orders from the Dark Forces two camps of which reside in the South side of Glasgow

On a lighter note, I think Artur should be given a slot on Celebrity stars in their eyes after his truly emotional rendition of 'Holy Goalie' at the end of the game yesterday after throwing his gloves into us in the crowd. Anyone have this on video?

A match that will live long in the memory - the highlights being Aiden making the fourth goal and Barry Robson scoring the first with his first touch - wrap them up and keep them for you grandchildren folks.

There were a number of fine performances but Aiden shone pretty much from beginning to end. Not only his skillful touches, which have always been a feature of his game, or even this season's newfound ability to carry the ball with real pace, but - and this is something I haven't seen commented on - the fact that he unleashed a couple of rocket shots from distance that would have got him his hat trick if it hadn't been for a couple of fine saves. If he can add that to his game and keep what he has already got he'll be in with a real chance of being amongst the finest players ever to grace a Celtic jersey. What a pleasure it has been to watch him play - I look forward to seeing him at Parkhead for years to come - that will be sure to provide many more memories to treasure.

Does anyone know if you can appeal a yellow card? I do hope that Celtic compile a video of every tackle which Aiden was involved in during the game - his booking was simply astonishing. Not for the first time he was kicked around without demur from the referee (though, to be fair, Aberdeen were not particularly bad) and then booked for one bad tackle. Yesterday was only surprising because it wasn't even a bad tackle.

Actually, looking at the stats before the game I see Aiden is Celtic's most booked player - please explain that one to me. Indeed you have to look down the table quite a bit to find a defender. Paranoid? Moi?

I've just been looking at the fixtures list on the official site and I see we have only 4 home games out of the next 11 (Hearts, Barca, Inverness and Motherwell).

I won't get to the Hearts game since I am travelling to the religiously strict alcohol-free Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ( plenty of fundamentalists and none of the fundamentals). Inverness is a week night and mid week travel up from dahn sarf is not on (I have special permission for Champs league). Therefore, apart from the Barca game, I only have 1 SPL game to look forward to before the split (and then 2 or 3 after that). Given that the postponed home games, including the already played Falkirk one, will all be played midweek, I am not getting to use my season card anywhere near as much as I would like. So, would anyone based in the West of Scotland like to do a swap with me until the end of the season? The dog doesn't bite, the kids only do so occasionally and I have Celtic TV. Obviously I would not dream of asking you to go to Saudi on my behalf(though if it fits in with your Lent plans....)

Does anyone know what the ticket allocation procedure is likely to be for the cup tie at Aberdeen? Will it just be the usual procedure or are the ones who went to Kilmarnock going to get some sort of priority?

It's just that I can't get to many away games until after Christmas as I pay 3 season books on installment, then you've got Christmas right away. The problem is that you have accumulated no loyalty points by not attending any away games up till January so makes it hard to get tickets for away games from now on.

Not disputing the fact that the guys who have went to all the games get first crack, that's the only fair way and they deserve it.

I was surprised I managed to get 3 tickets for St Mirren in a couple of weeks.

My dada told me that we have no home games in March. Surely this cannot be right, seeing as are two home games behind Rangers and we would only have had 3 home league matches and 7 away games in the first 3 months of 2008. I think the fixture 'computer' wants to make it as hard as it can to make us not win the League!

are you serious about Garr C ?

certainly there were many good things about yesterday, however none of then included GC !

at no time did he do the thing that he is paid to do - i.e. defend !

    watching the Aberdeen "highlights"
it should be noted that every one of them featured a simple high ball towards CG which he either failed to win or in winning succeeded in heading the ball behind himself !

at the goal he was first of all out-muscled then got in the way of AB by blocking yet not clearing the ball !

it should be remembered that the last time Aberdeen lost so heavily was to John Barnes's team in 1999.

unless WGS plays BB when he is fit we will struggle to defend the most basic of ploys - a long ball aimed at a big CF

I think GC tries his hardest but he is simply "not fit for purpose"

Absolutely! Can you imagine how chuffed he would be? It would also strengthen his feelings for and loyalty to the club.

I think giving him number 7 is a great idea though how it would have to be introduced at the same time as the next new strip.

There’s nothing more I can add to the unanimous praise for Sunday’s sparkling 5 star 5 goal winning performance. The next game can’t come soon enough.

On the results and form of the last month or so, Gordon Strachan and Peter Lawell have jointly assembled a squad which can fulfill Gordon’s vision of fast free flowing football.

We have the best goalkeeper north of Calais, and maybe even in Europe.
We have two fast attacking wing backs in Hinkel and Naylor, backed up by a young hopeful in Caddis and a recovering youthful Wilson.
A choice of five centre backs, Caldwell, McManus, Kennedy, Balde and O’Dea, who can be rotated according to the opposition and the tactics employed.
Our midfield is a finely tuned engine, built for long high speed cruising, the grind of uphill struggles against the suspicious intent of the MIB and the rigours and pressures of the run in to the title flag.
In McGeady and Nakamura there is skill, vision, agility, inventiveness and energy in abundance. (Did you see McGeady’s lung bursting run near the end?)
In Brown and Hartley we have driving power and aggression coupled with a desire to win.
Backed up by Donati, Sno, Robson and perhaps Mizuno we have complementary players who can be rotated or drafted in for injuries, substitutions or tactical changes.
At the sharp end in McDonald and JVOH, we have the luxury of the SPL’s leading strike force. They are backed up by Samaras, a young, pacey and aspiring striker who, on admittedly limited evidence, looks like he will relish the challenge of scoring goals to cement his Euro 2008 place.

Am I too optimistic in thinking that we not only have a side which will win the SPL, but could also see off Barcelona to advance in the CL?
    Nope. I don’t think so.

Our faith in the Celtic players and management, which took a wee bit of a hammering through the dark injury ridden winter days of December, has been justified, and they deserve our unconditional support as we reduce Rangers’ tenuous hold on first place.

Wouldn’t you all rather be in this modern, sleek green and white charabanc rather than the spluttering blue and white band wagon for the excursion to the SPL title?
I suspect even Teddy Bear would rather be watching us in this form instead of the dull, turgid fare on offer downriver.

Back in the old days of teams waering 1 to 11, I can remember Kenny wearing 7, 8 and 10 fairly regularly. When he went to Liverpool in '77 he replaced a guy called Keegan and took his no 7 jersey.

The fixture list looks bad right now in terms of home and away, but bear in mind we have the home games against them and Dundee Utd to be fitted in. They have only away games still to be rearranged.

It's the stupid system we have with playing teams three times and then the rediculous splt that complicates thing.

Look at Spain for example. Each team plays each other once in the first half of the season. Then the same games are reversed for the second half. Simple.

In the interest of "fair play" it seems logical to me that the Ibrox fixture for late March should be reversed to Celtic Park and then balance would be restored. This obviously assumes that the postponed gane from New Year would have been scheduled after the Ibrox game.

If announced soon, most people would be able to organise travel etc accordingly

Or is that too sensible? fair? or sportsmanlike for Duffield and Co to suggest.

Riordon might be getting punished for his off-field behaviour. In the strange world of football, I think refusing to allow a player to leave and refusing to allow him to train is one of the ways to actually punish a player, short of docking his wages every week.

If you terminate his contract he just goes off to another team, but not allwoing him to play or train severely diminishes his prospects for the future.

Bigjock67, get back too work (E O S) or I will gladly count you in the bottom 20% who will not accept change.

We were supposed to have 1 home game in March against Dundee Utd but this was can'd due to them making the LCF (C'mon Dundee Utd) and rightly Celtic and Motherwell got together quickly and re-arranged the postponed game from early Jan. We will probably have the re-arranged Hun game at end of March too, I would imagine. SPL, although I don't like or trust them very much had little to do with the Barca away game as that happenned due to them being 1st in the groups stage or the LCF taking precedance over the SPL games. That's just the way it is.

We know as hoops that we have to be good enough on the park to overcome all the bias from the estblishment in this country. That's the way it is, has been and will always be. We have overcome this many times before and will do so many more times in the future.

It doesn't matter which teams get to the top 6 or how many times you have played them home and away.
19 home 19 away must be achieved even if it creates an imbalance in some of the pairings.

I think Aberdeen had to visit Celtic Park 3 times on two consecutive seasons.

Maybe rather than joining the list of great Celtic no. 7s, he'd rather be the first great Celtic no. 46?

It shows the craziness of the split that 19 home and 19 away games for each team is nothing more than an aspiration. Livingston not too long ago had 18 home and 20 away games in a season. And either three home or away games against any team cannot be justified.

As things stand at the moment the teams joining us in the top 6 would be Rangers, Dundee Utd, Motherwell, Aberdeen and Inverness.

So the last 5 games based on who we have played home and away should be Rangers (H), Dundee Utd (A), Motherwell (A), Aberdeen (H) and Inverness (A). Two home games and three away games.

Now given we will have played 16 home and 17 away by the split, this doesn't add up!

    Makes no sense.

We will play 19 home games. The teams in 5th & 6th place may have to play 18/20 home/away.

We might play 1 or 2 teams home/away 3 times.

agree about aiden No 7 is a big pressure to bear

Biggest concern about Aiden is some EPL outfit -i am thinking newcastle and if hutton does well tottenham- bids big for him in the summer

KK spent so long in Glasgow he will be well aware of Aiden, who for me is starting to look like a rich man's Aaron Lennon.

we have in my opinion 2 genuine big stars in the team Artur and Aiden (on this seasons form)

Aiden for me has improved in the head as much as anywhere his attitude seems to be excellent, somethhing i think the manager played a big part in.

without aiden and skippy this season we would be badly struggling

    All,

Havent had a chance to post in a while - but having been thoroughly depressed before the window closed there has been a substantial change since.

And then there have been two performances worthy of the name Celtic.

We are building momentum coupled with (at last) a decent transfer window - could it be that we could yet win the league.

Then again - beware the referees - they have yet to have their proper say - watch those old firm games closely and you will see a glimpse of the truth.

    Hail Hail

On the debate about the league split, my understanding is that Celtic have three home games and the Huns have two home games.

One item yesterday that really bugged me was the constant slagging of Donati by the Laptop Loyal, I think it was Burley that said yesterday "that he must have caught a chill", implying that he had wimped out. Then you have Ned 'Bonkers' Keevins and Peter'Alias'Martin (what name will he put when the Gov't ID Cards come in) slanderously calling him a fraud.

Lot of praises yesterday from the media of the Hartly/Brown partnership but they all the media still had to have a little dig at Donati. Lets look at our last two games, both excellent 5-1 away wins. To me there were a couple of differences. Firstly while Aiden was excellent against Killie he was 'out of this world' against Aberdeen if he had played like that against we would have beaten Killie at least 10-1.

Secondly what struck me between the two games was that Aberdeen created more chances in the first half than Killie did in the whole of the match last week. Aberdeen could have easily have scored 2 goals in the first half, Mackie had an open net and I believe it was Miller that hit the post.

While I thought Brown/Hartly combination played well,(I thought it was Skoosh best game for ages)I thought the Brown/Donati combination in the Killie game offered better coverage for the defenders, the empirical evidence is the lack of chances that Killie had against us.

Both Rugby Park and the Muttondome are difficult places to play (let see how the Huns do there) and both games we played excellent and were won 5-1. I thought the Aberdeen game the more exciting (Aideninhio the main reason) but the Killie game we played a better TEAM game. So that is why I think the next game this Saturday against Roman's Mercenarys, Donati should come back into the team at the expense of Hartly. Donati has come on to his game now, he has adapted to playing deeper and his distribution is excellent.

At the beginning of the season I thought a midfield of Naka, Skoosh, Donati, McGeady was too lightweight but now I have changed my mind, the class of Donati has won me over and just as important is we now have a healthy Naka. During the bad form of December, teams were doubling up on Aiden, now they can't do it as we have a free wheeling Naka. Naka's passing is splitting teams apart, there are less big hoofs up the park, we are passing the ball out and that is why Donati needs to be in the team, after all someone has to collect the ball from Mick to prevent him just punting it up to the other team's goalie.

This havering is not meant to be a slight at Hartly, I think he is an excellent squad player and can play many positions so he has his role yet to play.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

This is the least bothered I could be about the darnel being 4 points clear. Fate has been a mite good to us over the past few weeks/month - up until our last two games M/well must have been relishing the thought of playing us (Not to mention a few others) - now I don't think that will remain/be the case.

I've watched Naylor play through his bad patch - seems to be coming out the other side, as do the team.

And that's my big point - the team look happy and bonded - the smiles, the joy on their faces - Boruc running up half the park to congratulate his team mate - JVOH joking with Skoosh...

Looks like a team that want to play for each other, win for each and do it in style.

    Come on the hoops.

Now that the day's desk-work is almost done I can get around to CQN ...

The Aiden number 7 issue (and thanks for all the interesting views expressed) raises quite a few good questions. One is how certain shirt-numbers, quite rightly, will probably always symbolise those players who became our heroes. Numbers 7 and 10 are obvious examples. When I was younger, I thought of 5 in the same way, because of Big Billy. I doubt if many would support going down the US route (in basketball & Ice-hockey at least) of retiring numbers when the players retire, yet the reason for doing this is at least partly because the shirt & number are too big to fill. It's also, of course, respect and honour for the player concerned. And as has been mentioned this afternoon, our shirt doesn't shrink! So, yes indeed, while judging someone like Aiden worthy of the clear honour of becoming the next Celtic 7, there may well be an unfair burden thus imposed. Fascinating.

P67/SFTB - delighted that it's a date on Saturday; at last. And a season-card has materialised, too. The doing of Our Lady of Lourdes, perhaps?

A long shot, but one I've got to take. I need two tickets for the Barca game next week, well 3 actually, but I'm willing to miss this one for the Bhoys from Poland. We already have 2 but Zbyszek is giving first shout to his relies and has already resigned himself to watching it in a boozer if more can't be found.

I know that this will interest some posters on CQN because it means we will need to be at CP long before the KO to try to get some more tickets and therefore, we won't be able to be in BB before the game.

If anyone knows of any chance of a brief being made available, could you let Paul know asap and he can then let me know (sorry mate, should have cleared this up with you beforehand :o)

Was looking forward to seeing Hinkle playing - thought he improved as the game progressed but he was a little shaky in the first half. Possibly ring rusty.

Aiden's creativity particularly for the second goal will live in the memory. Absolutely magnificent. Robson's goal also one to treasure.

Another priceless memory is the Aberdeen defender's face when the penalty wasn't given. Astonishment personified! As long as it doesn't come back to haunt us!!

Impressed with the whole way the team played.
Aiden took his goal well and the assist for Scotts goal, was a joy to see, such a talent when he's on song, and he's certainly been on song for a number of weeks now.

Why should there be a clamour for a certain number, whether it be 7,8,or10.

These numbers have been worn by many great player,But I think I would be right in saying, that there never has been a famous player wearing the number 46.

I can,in the future, see a young lad coming to Celtic, and asking the manager if he could get the number 46,as it was worn by a very famous player.

No I would'nt worry what number I wore unless it was 666.

Having only seen the second half live on Sunday(watching the whole game tonight), already peeked at the high lites, I have to say that if we play that way for the three games against the pretenders from the crown, it will all be academic.

It will come down to threes, 3 wins= 3+3+3= 9 points= 3 en a row, and you can take that to the bank.

    Sir Paul

    The Aiden Thingy:

I carefully scanned the incident, that prompted the Referee to issue Yellow Card to Aiden,

    Several times...

    First off...

    Aiden DID commit a foul.

He chased back on a ball that he had INADVERTENTLY, given away to an opponent.
As usual.. Aiden had a RUSH of adrenalin, because he had lost possession and had put his opponent...who
was now speeding towards the Celtic Goal... in an advantageous position.

Feeling responsible for his failure to properly control the ball, in the foist place, He raced after the Aberdeen player and...

    This is the Important Feature!

Catching up with his rival, he did the Unforgivable....

    He tackled his opponent....

    FROM THE REAR.....

Firstly by restraining his target with tug to the man's shirt...

Secondly, as his opponent came to a halt... Aiden... still in his TACKLING FROM THE REAR MODE.... TAPPED HIS TARGET ON THE ANKLE...
Whether by accident or design, he still performed the action... thereby, committing what could be interpreted, by a persnickety referee....As a SECOND, FOULING ACTION.

The Referee, immediately signaled to Aiden that he was issuing Aiden a YELLOW CARD.

Here is the apple of Contention...

Aiden... without a shadow of a Doubt... had committed a foul on his opponent.
    That is Incontestable.

    Howevvah....

Did Aiden's illegal tackle warrant a YELLOW CARD?

In my opinion.... the answer is
    a Resounding ...NO!

Unfortunately ....I am not the Referee!

    Conclusion and Advice to Aiden:

Aiden... Do not EVER MAKE A TACKLE ON AN OPPONENT FROM THE REAR,AGAIN.

Tackling an opponent, from the rear,no matter how gently done...is an automatic fouling action.

Also...never protest a decision by the Referee... he is omnipotent...
    like the Pope!

Take every decision against you, by the official in charge with equanimity and tranquility.

    In Short... ZIP IT!

KEEP YER COTTON-PICKING PROTESTS AGAINST HIS DECISION, TO YOURSELF!

YOUR SOLE RESPONSIBILITY, IS TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO APPEAR IN THE CELTIC FOIST TEAM... FOR EVERY SINGLE GAME!

That is your number ONE PRIORITY..

    Mr.MC GEADY... YOU ARE NEEDED!

Therefore, knowing the Propensity for the Refereeing Fraternity,in General... to take every opportunity to DEBILITATE and HALT THE SUCCESS, in any way that they can,of our Beloved CELTIC... and in doing so... give our MAIN RIVALS an Advantage...

My simple advice should be followed...

DO NOT MAKE THEIR JOB ANY EASIER!

Follow the Doctor's advice in the following Vaudeville Skit...whenever you get that seemingly uncontrollable Adrenalin Rush.

Man: Doctor,Doctor... Every time I lift my arm above my Head... I get a Blazing Head Ache!...Help,me,doc...
    What should I do?

    Doctor: DON'T DO THAT, ANYMORE!

    Kojo.

    hi paul. fellow celts .

excellent performance once again from the bhoys, but starting to get a bit concerned by the outcome of our bookings. that with aiden yesterday was nothing short of cheating . never mind the penalty, we can win without penalties. but we must be aware, that these bookings are being handed out on a calculated basis, and when the time is at hand will damage us personnel wise. i hope our men are taking stock of this, and planning for this certain blow to our team formation v the other lot. i appreciate that it will be difficult to plan damage limitation, with the dates of our rearranged fixtures against them, being at the mercy of THEIR friends at hampden HQ. but we are in danger of having to play them with many of our finest sitting in the stands . paranoid i am , but i have got this way with watching what has happened over the near fifty years that i have been following the hoops. mark my words this day .the mib know their aim.

They are in a position of Authority... and authority can no longer be imposed, once Respect is Ignored!

And, in my personal opinion, mind you... my personal opinion....

Unless, there is the element of an unpleasant consequence being imposed,if the demands of the one in the position of authority are flouted or ignored...
Then there can be No Respect.

For one cannot give respect to anyone, unless one fears the object of one's respect.

Case in point, which you have so cleverly provided.

Dont know if you are on just now, but in answer to your question about Kevin Toner's situation, I was at a game at Celtic Park, either early this season or late last, when they announced that Kevin Toner was refereeing his last game that afternoon. I think it was in keeping with the practice of the referee getting to choose where his last game was.
Needless to say it went off without incident or any dodgy decisions. One of the very few games I saw him ref at Celtic Park.
For what it is worth, I always thought he was one of the better refs.
Was it Bobby Tait who had his last game at Ibrox in 1998 v Kilmarnock when, with the score 0-0, Kilmarnock had the temerity to score a goal during an unusually long "time added on so that Rangers can score"? Ironically if he had blown at the normal time, life would have been more difficult for us.

Maybe a bit too late but I think can remember Kenny Dalglish playing right half deputising for Bobby Murdoch in one of his early games for Celtic so also wearing no. 4. I think it might have been a league cup tie against Ayr United or Raith Rovers at HAmpden.
Anyone else help me out with this one? Might just be my memory playing tricks.

I need to correct my post from 23:04 yesterday.

I believed that Barry Ferguson had been booked once this season and in the League Cup at that .

    This is incorrect.

His one caution came in the away game in Lyon.

Trawling through the statistics for the season his name does not appear in the list of the 184 players who have been cautioned.

Not one Scottish referee has seen anything worthy of even the palest yellow card!

From now on maybe he should be referred to as Saint Bazza.

Kenny played at right half (aul' haun expression) against Ayr United in the 1969/70 League Cup semi final at Hampden.

We won 2-1 and that was the same game when Tommy Gemmell had to take over in goal from Ronnie Simpson.

He kept a clean sheet too just as he had done in the Scottish Cup tie at Shawfield earlier that year in a 0-0 draw.

Ronnie collided with Clyde's Jimmy Quinn (ex Celt of course) that afternoon.

I think the recurrence of that injury in the Ayr semi final, a dislocated shoulder, just about finished Ronnie's career.

    Bhoys,

I was in touch with Dick Byrne over the weekend to ask how he and his family were coping after the Requiem Mass and burial of Christopher.

Like the people they are, they are counting their blessings and even in the midst of such a tragedy, Dick was looking for positives from the whole experience.

They are truly a very remarkable family.

Dick asked me to tell all the C Q N posters that he has read all the posts each night and he is astounded and honoured at the huge amount of support shown to him and his family by each and every poster.

He especially mentioned Oldtim for his touching and sincere post concerning the death of Christopher and his own brother.

He sends his thanks and regards to you, Oldtim.

He also sends his thanks to Paul67 for allowing C Q N to be the vehicle for his and your feelings.

The Byrne family are good people who in the middle of their suffering, can still see the goodness in other people.

I know we will continue to pray for and support the Byrne family.

    Thanks Bhoys,

Thanks for clearing that up for me and reminding me that it was the same game Ronnie Simpson got injured again. I was at the game and remember Neilly Mochan helping Ronnie round to the dug out. I think he was wearing a bright yellow jersey with green shorts and white socks and Celtic were wearing the green tops because Ayr were wearing white.
I seem to remember thinking Kenny looked like a good player that night but I dont suppose you would need to be a great scout of footballers to recognise that.
I used to get taken to a lot of reserve games around that time and got to see Danny McGrain, Vic Davidson, Paul Wilson, Lou Macari and Kenny Dalglsh playing. There was also a player called Tony McBride (I think) that my old man always thought was a great prospect but he never made it. He seemed to think that it was because of his off the field socialising that led to him to be released from Celtic Park. Never heard what happened to him after that.

Did he score a couple of goals that night? I think Tommy Gemmell captained Celtic in that game.

I got taken to that game at the very last minute. I think my first Celtic Rangers game was a 0-0 at CP when big Billy had a goal disallowed and my second was 3-1 at CP with DAvie Hay scoring a screamer from about 30 yards at the Celtic end. That shot gets further out every time I think about it.

Ofcourse another side to the McGeady booking debate is that Aiden should not be losing the ball in his own half.

He has done it on a number of occasions this season and the one outstanding flaw left in his game.

Still if he is setting up two goals and scoring every game and generally entertaining we'll just need to turn a blind eye to one or two lapses.

On the train back from the Weeg today, I had took a copy of the Even'Times (free of course). For the superlatives being spouted about Aiden McGeady (and having seen Chick Young's article, I think we're on the verge of a "Aiden is a traitor" campaign), the referee essentially received the thumbs up for a competent performance.

There are many many things wrong in Scottish football. We tend to look with disdain and envy in equal measure towards the south of the border. But, can we not applaud the approach the media commentators have adopted towards the referees in England ? Can you imagine the astonishment and vitriol of Messrs Hansen, Shearer & Co if Rooney had been rugby tackled to the ground without remedy ? If Ronaldo had been booked in the same game for running near an opponent, for a mere yellow card for a last man foul ? These events all occurred within a relatively short space of time in the second half. My 7 and 10 year old daughters were aghast at the incompetence on display. My 3 year old thought the ref looked like Bing Hitler - no that was me - the point is that the acceptable standards in this country are way below par. We must raise our game. That is why, despite the satisfaction of a 5-1 win and an exhilirating performance by McGeady, a sizeable degree of focus should remain on the referee's performance. And precisely because, the next time we're not playing quite so well, we're a wee bit jaded, then such refereeing by custom and tradition will end up defeating us.

Just saw a clip of the Motherwell v Killie game on Scotsport there. When they scored the last minute winner, 6 or 7 of their players piled into the crowd celebrating.

How many did the ref book?

    a) Just the goalscorer who started it?

    b) All of them?

    c) None, cos it was at Fir Park and Hugh Dallas said it's different at Fir Park? ( I think he meant the crowd were provocatively close to the pitch, you can barely avoid stumbling into them whereas at CP and our away venues, our scorers are running a half marathon distance to bait the refs).

I seem to remember thinking Kenny looked like a good player that night but I dont suppose you would need to be a great scout of footballers to recognise that.

*I remember him bursting a gut tae score and his face beig red with exertion. He was actually the reserve right half before converting to the forward role.

John Fallon played in the final against St Johnstone but was soon replaced by Evan Williams who was actually signd as a back up but ended the season with a chamions medal and European and Scottish Cup runners up badges.

Sitting here in Australia, counting the minutes till 5pm and an ice-cold beer, I noticed the Daily Record online has a feature which is a recorded conversation between Hugh Keevins, James Traynor and Keith Jackson discussing the weekend SPL action.

I am sorry but I couldn't resist it and tuned in.

Traynor praised Aiden McGeady's performance on Sunday but immediately went into a laborious tirade about how "every time McGeady plays like that I feel so angry that he turned his back on Scotland."

Hugh Keevins defended Aiden by saying "If it was Wales he was playing for we wouldn't be having this controversy."

Even Keith Jackson chipped in with, "He made his decision a long time ago and there really is no point in getting angry about it."

No, I couldn't believe my ears either.

Traynor then got all indignant and said "What are you trying to say here?"

Keevins, to his credit, stuck to his guns and said, "He gets booed everywhere he goes because of it."

"Are you saying it's a sectarian thing then?" protested Traynor.

"Yes," confirmed Shug. "In a lot of cases it is."

The item lasted only about 3 minutes and I was left wondering whether or not Keevins was actually aware that the conversation was being recorded for the newspaper's website, such was my surprise at his words.

    We'll probably never know.

    Ho Hum.

emusanorphan, having been a recipient of Zbyszek's wonderful hospitality in Poland when I went to see him and his wonderful country, I have made it my mission to show Zbyszek and his fellow travellers as much of our beautiful country as I can in the short time that they will be here. We are all staying in the Ibis hotel in West Regent street. I'm picking them up from Prestwick at 14:00 on Tuesday and we will be taking the "scenic route" up the West Coast to Glasgow. We will be meeting a CQN Legend for drinks on Tuesday night and I'm taking them on a mystery trip in to the wilds of Scotland for most of Wednesday and we will be back in the city centre at about tea time. If we haven't secured the 3 tickets we need by then, then we will be heading up to CP as early as we can manage to try to secure the tickets we need.

If anyone hears of any tickets going that night, Paul has my mobile number and it would really help if someone could let him know before he heads off to the game that there is / are tickets available and he will let me know.

I realise it's a long shot and I know he could have chosen an easier game to go to (he was originally coming over for the huns game on the 2nd), but due to other commitments from various members of his party, this was the game that they have decided to try to get to. I'm quietly confident that we will get at least another two tickets and hopefully with the wind in the right direction, we will get the 3 that we require.

Of interst to Celtic in all of this is Trappatoni's announcement that Ireland will not play a March friendly this year or hold any get togethers before the end of May. This means we will not need to release the man of the moment or put him at risk of injury playing for somebody else until we have the league well wnd truly wrapped up.

If the EPL is the greatest league in the world, how come its top people all move to Spain as soon as they can?

Yaya Touré arrived back from the African Cup of Nations insisting that Drogba had told him he'd love to move to Barcelona.

And Frank Lampard has just bought a house in Sitges.

    Celtic_first,

Hopefully Aiden will emulate the career and medal haul of the late great Jinky Johnstone.

It´s high time for an Aiden love in at Parkhead. For all those sighers and booers and he´ll never be Celtic class distractors ... go and by some throat lozenges now. This Saturday it´s payback time

The same can be said for Mc Manus btw.

    Celtic_first,

Sitges is the gay capitol of Barcelona is it not!!! Not a good idea to wake up there mid day on the beach after a heavy session with so called spanish film producers waking you up asking you if you want to go to a pre afternoon party.

Mind you I did have the pleasure of meeting Mark Hughes and Gary Lineker when they moved there. Gary borrowed my paper and before you ask it was not the gay section of the beach. Mark Hughes was not to be seen .... allegedly but I had sand kicked in my eyes ... honest guv

12thman- unfortunately the WSC website only has last month's issue on it, and I don't think all the material is available online.

Well worth a couple of minutes in WHSmith reading it- you probably won't agree with 100% of it[ it is written by an Edwardian!] but any time light can be shne on the darkness of their'campaign' is to be welcomed.

I might ,time permitting , be able to do a 2 finger type transcription of some of it later on.

    DBBIA,

No worries. Can you give me the full title of the mag. as I am not familiar with it. I will try and track it down here in Denmark. Please excuse my ignorance

  • At 12/02/08 10:54, Blogger dontbrattbackinanger said…

Sorry- the mag is called' When Saturday Comes' . It takes its name from a song by the Skids[?] and it might be available in the bigger cities.

Well worth reading if you think there's life outside the Premiership. This month also features a review of the Celtic/Man U book[ not positive] and a letter on the current whereabouts of Hoopslegend Paul Byrne.

The Fat Frank Lampard link to Barcelona would be his wife, who's a Spanish model. If he did move abroad he'd become the only current England international playing outside the premiership.

Might be a shocking statistic in that no foriegn club thinks an English player good enough to play for them but the victorious Italian squad from 2006 were all taken from Serie A.

    Emusanorphan,

Can't e-mail you at mo. Backed everything up and can't restore my old addresses....yet.

You CAN e-mail me via my link or using msincent@yahoo.co.uk.

Anyway, I was going to pick Zbyszek up and show him the 'Celtic' lights of Glasgow. However Pablo is now doing so and staying at the same hotel as him. I think the prospect of seeing Scotland in all its glory may just have beaten my offer of the Brazen, Bar 67, Bairds, Failtes, Sharkey's, Whistlin Kirk, Empire, Tolbooth, Emerald Isle, Braemar, O'Brien's, Herraghtys, Kellys, O'Donnels, etc....and then in the evening...the Southern General, Vicky, and the Royal Infirmary....or possibly Leverndale!

I am in correspondence with Zbyszek, and intend to meet up when he gets here. If possible I will go down to Prestwick to greet him when he arrives.

We met when I went out to the Poland pre-season 20 months ago, so I hope I still recognise him, although if his welcome at Warsaw's Etudia terminal is anything to go by, I shouldn't have a problem. As I came through Customs, I could see two large Celtic Scarves being waved through the semi-opaque security windows. It was Zbyszek and his brother!!

Anyway, if you have tckts to pass on, just e-mail me and we can meet in Sharkey's, the Kirk or a place of your choosing.

    Hail hail

    TMC,

I might be mistaken, but I believe there were plenty of Italians playing abroad at the time but the policy of the Italian FA was ONLY to select domestic players.

You are mistaken, I'm sure there were plenty of Italians playing abroad at the time but no such policy exists. The obvious way to prove that is that Cannavarro and Zambrotta both played against Scotland and represent Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively!

Have the best Italians not always played at home for the majority of their careers, and it's only the 2nd and 3rd class players go abroad?

Italians don't move abroad as they can't leave mamma's cooking behind! Quite right too!!!!

Luca Toni breaks your Calciopoli rule as he now creates havoc for Bayern instead of Fiorentina.

Wee Chic devotes the column he, er, writes on the BBC website to the Celtic number 46.

    Deliberate mistake/myth perpetuation number one.

Chic says: "The Irish prised a foot in his (Aiden's) door when Celtic stopped him playing for the Scottish schoolboy team and Packy Bonner started to nibble his ear."

Right you are Chic. The SFA refused to pick Aiden because, at Celtic's request, he wasn't turning out for his school team. Standard policy for Celtic, head in the sand stuff from the SFA blazers, as usual.

    Deliberate mistake/myth perpetuation number two.

Chic says: "Celtic are sitting on the kind of goldmine which at one fell swoop could write off the cost of their Lennoxtown training complex."

Right, Chic. Except we've already paid for Lennoxtown.

Good work Chic. Anyone would think you'd been covering Scottish football for ages and knew lots of background.

    TMC,

I don't know when it changed, but there was definitely a policy up till the late nineties I think when only domestic players were selected.

    Pablo,

Zbyszek has my mobile, but e-mailed you as well.

    Hail Hail

TMC- Munich's only the other side of the Alps! There is always one exception, and I think the lure of his mamma's kitchen will be too strong for Luca to resist.

C1st- Mr Chic writes that Quarenta-Seis is a shoo-in for the POTY. He must think we are going to win the title, because if it goes to them Unbookable Barry will get POTY.

Quite a conundrum. We need as much money as we can raise to improve. TV provides that, as does our attending matches. We can't compete meaningfully financially with the EPL, so we try to curtail stations such as Polstat from broadcasting over here. Would it be realistic to suggest that Celtic do their utmost to stop them in Scotland (and especially in the Greater Glasgow Area) and don't bother too much about Ireland, where we have no control anyway. Personally, I cannot understand how anyone would rather watch a game in a pub, even among mates, in the depths of winter, rather than be at Celtic Park. I'm sure it is not all down to cost or perceived lack of investment. If we don't invest our money in Celtic, the club can't invest in the team.

And anybody that gives up watching the Hoops because of our chairman can't have been watching for long. There have been many a lot worse before the great Fergus.
