Hearts game more important than Barcelona

I heard “biggest game of the season” mentioned yesterday in relation to Wednesday’s Barcelona match; it’s not even the biggest game of the week. That honour goes to tomorrow’s tussle with Hearts, who have already won at Celtic Park this season and taken a point from us away from home.

Unfortunately a four point gap means that a last minute goal would almost certainly be more valuable to Celtic tomorrow than on Wednesday; not that I am too concerned about either match.

I am sure Gordon Strachan will have his sights firmly focussed on the matter in hand.

Apart from expecting a comfortable victory for Celtic, I anticipate a number of less palatable happenings away from Celtic Park this weekend.

Mike McCurry will referee his sixth Rangers game on the season (five in the league) on Sunday; twice the frequency Rangers have seen any other ref.

He cautioned more Celtic players in one game this season than he has Rangers players all season; a key factor which has resulted in Aiden McGeady being cautioned more often than Rangers’ Cuellar, Weir, Papac, Adam and Ferguson combined.

He issued 12 of Celtic’s 37 SPL yellow cards in four games, or 32% of the total in 17% of the games.

Not that Celtic fans should slip into paranoia, McCurry saves his worst treatment for Hearts; he was the man who allowed Barry Ferguson to control the ball with his arm before putting Rangers ahead in the League Cup semi final, he also decided not to punish Allan McGregor for his outrageous lunge at Callum Elliot at Tynecastle; a clear penalty kick.

Nor did he punish any of the five Rangers players who left the field to celebrate with their fans after a goal against Celtic in October.

Perhaps a spell cooling his heals in the lower leagues will allow him to rediscover his focus.

It would not be an important weekend in the SPL without some old transfer story surrounding a Celtic player being regurgitated by the media; you could set your watch by it. Such is the curse of having good players, I suppose.

I think you'll find that Mike the Baptist will be offered more opportunity to 'maintain the gap'. The chances of him having to take in the delights of Stirling Albion or Stranraer seem remote indeed.

Big Jock New........that you had to beat 12 men every game, was not afraid to say so and made sure the players responded accordingly.

Wonder if the CPS/Strathclyde's Finest are following El Baptista to check his patterns of association.

Excellent post, Paul, as this site is widely recognised as one of the more balanced Celtic forums, your post hits the nail on the head. It is what a lot of decent people have wanted aired for some time now, myself included, though to class myself in the decent bracket is pushing it. The Rev McCurry should hang his head in shame if he IS a man of God. The booking of nine of our players in one match, when we were spineless, says it all about the excuse for a man. High time people like him were put under scrutiny without the accusers themselves being accused of paranoia. Well said.

DBBIA, they were in with Phil (JRS) and I before and after the Aberdeen game last month. Andy was also there (he now lives in Warrington enjoying a life of leisure).

The McCurry stats jump out at you indeed. It remains to be seen if the old media pick up on this article in the same eager way they did with the "no clean sheet away from home" story.

Learning a lesson from Dumbhoy, I won't hold my breath.

    Paul 67,
I presume the transfer story you're referring to is "McGeady advised to leave to become superstar"?
When I saw the headline screaming at me I thought, here we go again. So after reading the article in which Brian Kerr is interviewed I cannot actually locate the point when he advises him to leave.
Sure, he talks about worldwide recognition being more apparent with Henrik but as far as I can tell he is surmising that Aiden WON'T leave and is not critical of this.

I'm glad you've taken the bull by the horns and had a dig at the injustice Celtic suffer from the MIB,especially by the reverend McCurry,I'm maybe doing an injustice to the protestant faith, by calling him reverand,Charlatan would be more appropriate, for that evil man of the cloth.

Well said Paul,I hope you carry on having a go at them, when it's called for.

Valencia Bhoy, this is the story I read on Fans FC. Like you, I could find nothing that advocated Aiden leaving Celtic.

Star McGeady set for lengthy Celtic stay
    10:16 February, 15, 2008
Ex-Ireland boss Brian Kerr believes Aiden McGeady will be in no hurry to leave the Bhoys

The 21-year-old has come to the attention of a host of top clubs this season with some impressive displays, leading to fears that he may be leaving the Scottish champions.

Kerr told the Daily Record however: "Aiden is a Celtic fan and a Celtic kid, so you can see him staying there for the rest of his career.

"He wants to stay and if the lad enjoys the environment and playing regularly then he might be happy enough."

Sub/Chris,all going to plan, I should land about 4.30 and will probably make my way to BBs from the airport. I will look out for you

    Good post Paul.

With regard to McCurry, the SPL should remember that Juventus actually got relegated and a league title 'rubbed out' for picking and choosing their referees.

The argument isn't necessarily 'is McCurry corrupt' - the argument should be that everything should be seen to be above board and that any 'anomolies' need to be exposed and questioned - at a higher level than the SPL if necessary.

The `paranoid` accusation levelled at us has had its affect in at least one way. Namely that many Celtic fans are at too gentle in their criticism of unarguable bias for fear of being seen as unreasonable. We need to back up our subjective views with objective information. For this reason, I would like to see a few more of the articles like Paul`s above giving unarguable statistics like those above concerning McCurry. Furthermore, we KNOW that a significant factor in Celtic`s home form in the CL is the positive support given by the crowd. We know ,also, that the media fosters many negative feelings towards our team and, inevitably, some of this rubs off on us and means that we do not transmit the positive feelings that our team`s current form, certainly, deserves. So, let`s have many more positive posts and don`t be scared in the pubs, for fear of the old paranoia nonsense, of telling it as it is. Rangers football club DID have a shameful policy of discrimination for many, many years and. to the best of my awareness, have NEVER uttered a word of apology about the shameful nature of such a policy. There are, of course, many other `snippets` which are either ignored or glossed over by the establishment (why, for instance, did Scotland and Rangers wear the same coloured socks? Why `Light Blues` when they patently are NOT IE Scotland are the Dark Blues and the country`s other team are the light Blues). I believe it is up to us to confront this institutionalised bias and articles like Paul`s give us the information to do so.Incidentally, we ARE better than Hearts so will almost certainly beat them and we have a slight chance against Barca.

    Paul,

While my brain agrees with you about the Heart's game's importance (years of listening to Mr Stein), my heart says that the Barca game is THE game. I feel if we can turn on the style we have been producing of late against them, we will take such confidnece from it that we will carry everything before us for the rest of the season.

Wasn't a childhood friend of McCurry defending him on here a couple of weeks back? Could he come on again and give us his opinion, given the stats that are being provided? It does, on the face of it, look really damning.

Going back to the last thread and the monies involved. As someone clueless in accountancy, am I right in thinking that because our debt has come down from £15m to £6m, that we have repaid the bank £9m from our overall profit?

By the way, I may be able to make BBs on Wednesday. When do folk gather there for an evening game?

'Rangers drop out of rich list'"

If I am not mistaken, you are a Rangers fan. What is your take on the headline? Is it them taking the opportunity to be negative about Rangers or is it them avoiding saying something about positive about Celtic?

    Are we all paranoid?

I know it's not the same, but the comparison is valid just the same. When it was the metropolitan police it was institutional racism. In Scottish football it is 'institutional sectarianism'. It has cost us more than one league title in recent years in my opinion.

McCurry getting twice as many Rangers games as any other top flight referee is not a statistical blip.

The bookings point made by you Paul is not a statistical blip. The bookings of our best players-McGeady being a particular example would be laughable were it not so patently ridiculous, that a player who opposition players get license to kick gets booked for the slightest misdemeanour or none.

Penalty not given against Aberdeen, the most ridiculous decision since Lennon's stone waller v Rangers. Referees choosing their final matches before retirement, Cadete/Farry fiasco, Tommy Burns 'tapping up' v Wattie. Tynecastle linesman flagging a dive. Scottish press complicity in laptop loyal stories/ mischief making stories re Celtic. A thousand "offside" Bobby Lennox goals.

    There are many, many more.

We are paranoid and we are entitled to be. We should scrutinise and criticise all of these things and this site, KDS and others do it admirably.

I think we will still overtake them this season but they will be calling in every favour they possibly can. Aiden will be booked if he so much as looks at the ref.

    Barca Bears Testimonial Update

Friday saw the first of many Testimonial events arranged to mark the 35th. Anniversary of our great victory in
Barclelona on 24th. May 1972 and what a start.

The event took place in Ayr, the heart of Ayrshire, which has been a Rangers stronghold for many years. The event
took the form of a Sportsman’s Dinner, held in Ayr & Craigie Bowling Club and was an outstanding success from start to finish.
Entertainment for the evening was provided by three outstanding after dinner speakers in the shape of Davy Wilson (a Rangers Legend),
Bobby Tait (The original Mason in the black) and John Robottom.

    WHAT?

Parkheadcumsalford, I don’t think the accusations against McCurry need to stretch back to his childhood or other private matters.

Your reading of the accounts is a tad over simplified. Profit bears a fleeting relationship with cash, as player spend, for example, usually comes off cash immediately but will hit profile over the period of a contract (amortisa…….).

Cheers, goldstar10, I was looking for that link..

    Paul,

your article compels me to tell the tale a Jambo collegue told me about 3 years ago.

McCury was one of the guest speakers at a Sportsmans Dinner at Tynecastle. Among his anecdotes was

    (A) I've reffed several Hearts v Hibs matches and am proud to say that they (Hibs) haven't won any of them!

    (B) I loved my (recently departed) father dearly - but I never forgave him for calling me Michael!

I've been watching him closely since then. I'm just amazed it's taken so long for him to finally get the notoriety his performances over a long time have justified.

Funnily enough, I'm not saying I think he deliberately cheats. I think it would be hard for any of us to be impartial in his position. I say to all...imagine you are refereeing at Celtic Park tomorrow and Scott McDonald "does a Bazza" and volleys the ball into the net. Do you see an infringement or is it "hand to ball!.

Our problem is ,and has always been, that MOST of the refs will MOST of the time not see it our way!! unfortunately, that all adds up. think 2003.

My other worry though is that this is, I believe, his last season and the last thing we need in a tight race is kamikaze "couldn't care less what they think of me anymore" type refereeing ala 2003.

as has been said before though if we contineu banging in the goals it will keep the stress at bay!!

Billy bhoy, good point. It is ludicrous to assume that referees and jounros are the only football minded people in Scotland who are impartial. I’m not, and neither are you, and we are both fair minded individuals.

Been looking at the rich list there and here’s what I reckon: if we played in a big league i.e. EPL
Take our £75.2 mill and subtract the Champs league money, say roughly £15 mill that’s £60mill
We have to be honest first season we probably wouldn’t make the Champs league
Add roughly £40 mill for EPL football rights, up to £100mill.

Extra exposure we can add more to the shirt sponsorship, kit makers etc, conservatively I’m thinking £15 mill a season (very conservative!) that’s us up to £115 mill.

Extra exposure also means more merchandise etc, that’s say conservatively £5mill a year.

Now with no euro football which I think inevitably we would have after a season or so, I reckon turnover could be around £125mill first year, £145 when we get to the Champs league again. That puts us up to tenth and of course the “new” fans etc I haven’t factored in. That’s where we should be and it’s so annoying we aren’t!

Realistically we should be, could be the 3rd biggest club in Europe based on turnover . We should be able to compete with the big boys and leave our destiny to football matters rather than the money men. Sorry if someone already said this but how can a PLC be denied a market to trade in within the EU? I’m sure we would win any court case we went for and its ramifications would be more widespread then the Bosman case. The old boys club that’s UEFA know this, we know this, it will happen!

Well said Edward! I didn't see the original comment, but this is a good call by you and I totally agree with you. I think references to 'Huns' etc., etc. are not in any Celtic Supporter's interests and only serve to continue an ongoing process of desentisisation and polarisation.

One of the things I like about this site is that good people like yourself, despite being a Rangers fan, can air an intelligent (and often good-humoured) view on all matters Celtic without being hounded.

I think the Celtic/Rangers football rivalry is fantastic, but lets leave the gutter press knuckle-dragging remarks where they belong. I do know my history, and am proud of my Scots/Irish (i.e. 100% Celtic) heritage, but I hope our future history sees Glasgow and the West of Scotland celebrating a City unified by football rather than divided by the past.

    Yours in Celtic,

    Jim.

P.S. Edward, I still think we will win the League despite your current position at the top of the table. :-)

    Paul67 Bravo for the article....

I disagree with those saying its just because he supports the huns and its hard to be impartial. .. the decisions have not been due to this... watch the 3-1 reverse to them again if you can.. id say 7 of the 9 bookings would be overturned if we could appeal. Aiden got booked for being fouled !!

mcurry is a cheat, plain and simple.

We need to highlight this, on blogs such as this, on other websites and at our matches... If we keep it in the limelight, it will be harder for him to cheat, although judging by some of the other "referees" there are a few ready take his place.

rangers will win on sunday, regardless how they play because the cheat mcurry will not allow them to lose.

this may have been going on for years but i dont care, it needs to be stopped. If a bully kept hitting you every day would you just get used to it because if happened all the time? no youd know him clean out.

    Good evening gentlemen.

Excellent article about McCurry, the man is blatant in his bias.

There are some of you out there who think his religion is unrelated to his judgement, and as has been pointed out, it is riddiculous to expect referees and journos not to continue looking at their team through tinted specs. I know that I would certainly favour Celtic if given the chance as an MIB or Guttersnipe.

Therefore it is with much excitement that I look forward to seeing a match report for a Celtic V Rangers game at Parkhead, where the match is handled in an 'even handed' fashion by match referee and Catholic Priest ,Father Patrick Murphy.

Anyway....End of week...a little aperitif on the way home and a full week off work beckons...Smiles to himself..

Sorry to be contentious about what is overall an admirable piece.... But I think you are wrong on this one....

I am salivating for three reasons this week...

    1. The return to form.

    2. The importance of the Hearts game.

    3. The importance of the Barca game.

Two and three are equally important...If your headline had... 'for the moment' I might have been more agreeable...

Oh and there is only one dish to avoid in Glasgow this weekend...At any restaurant...

    A Murray McCurry....

Edward, it’s a fragrant place during our Generation :-)

Canamalar, you are entitled to take it as a compliment, it was one.

Barabhoy, I really don’t know where anyone gets the idea that I somehow depend on sources Celtic Park for my editorial line.

It’s true, I normally don’t waste time on referee and have only discussed them twice after matches, although I also mentioned the officialdom against Falkirk three weeks ago, which favoured Celtic.

We are able to highlight things here, and I felt an opportunity arose to bring a spotlight on his forthcoming performance. Past performances are by definition beyond influence.

My guess for Sunday (mark this one):

You will see Mike McCurry book several Rangers players, including Barry Ferguson if he dares to wipe his nose on his sleeve. An opportunity to prove his balance will be grabbed.

    Bazzabhoy, cheers.

Collie, two in the county town? Hmmm.

    Paul,

Agree 100% - tomorrow is vital.

The last 2 games have been fantastic, but in both, due to the attacking formations in which the home teams lined themselves up (in relative terms, cf 10 men behind ball) our midfield has been able to flourish.

Tomorrow Hearts will play a defensive, counter attacking formation - totally different.

I hope - and believe - we will adapt accordingly.

Give me the league championship this year over any progress in the CL - except reaching the final, which isn't likely.

Looking forward to tomorrow big time. As the Holy Picture once said, "There's a buzz about the place."

    Hail Hail.

Twelfthman, Newcastle have reached a European semi final, quarter final and fourth round in the previous five seasons, and remember….

The Uefa Cup is the dirty little secret about how to collect coefficient points.

They are also English, and gain points from the English pot.

They are currently above Valencia, Bayern and Porto. Go figure.

Paul, excellent lead on McCurry. Like others on here, I too beliebe he is going out of refereeing in kamkaze mode. After all, who is he answerable to? I also tend to agre that he will take the opportunity on Sunday to dish out yellows to two or three Rangers players, as you say, as an action of implied fairness. Unfortunately, I believe this will not be his last opportunity to exert an influence on the standings in the league table.

    McCurry is Rangers 12th man.

You obv are not that familiar with the geography of the Ayrshire hinterland and are probably referring to East Ayrshire. I spent a wee spare half hour tonight on the SFA's website looking at the disciplinary documents and stumbled across the famed "Whistleblower" section.

This is where referees get the opportunity to explain contentious decisions, if the fancy it.

In season 2007 - 2008 there have been 4 decisions where the referee fancied it.

    1. Pollock v Montrose - Scottish Junior Cup Offside Decision - (actually, it was in the Scottish Cup - not very impressed so far) - asserting that the correct decision was made (in a rather conforntational manner I may add ("Jim Burns had a tight decision to make and he called it correctly.....more than can be said for the press reports!")

    2. Hamilton v Morton Div 1 - disallowed goal for Morton - asserting that the correct decision was made despite the officials appearing to change their minds.

    3. Dundee Utd v Rangers SPL - Cousin goal disallowed for offside - asserting that the correct decision was made and stating that "There is constant misinformation about the application of the Laws of the Game by "experts" and it is only fair that the assistant referee's alertness is noted."

    4. Hibs v Kilmarnock SPL - Stuart Dougal admitting he got it wrong when awarded a penalty to Hibs when the defender clearly played the ball with no foul.

That's it for this season so far folks. At least Stuart Dougal used the forum to say he got it wrong.

Not many others choose to use it to acknowledge mistakes. In fact, not many others choose to use it all.

Strange that. If mistakes are all honest why the reluctance to come on and acknowedge such mistakes?

I am no fan of Stuart Dougal, especially after the hearings over the Neil Lennon incident at Ibrox where Mr Dougal showed up with his lawyer and then publicly ridiculed Gordon Strachan for having legal presence when called to another hearing involving Mr Dougal over his dismissal from the touchline v Hearts. Double standards? Or Lesson Learned Mr Dougal?

Anyway, credit deserved for using the formal channel to acknowledge his mistake at Easter Road.

4 entries all season and 3 of them to state "we wos right". Is that why it was set up?

Stienshanklybusby :- I do know quite a bit about Ayrshire town from both work and living in them, once again I'll state I did not at any time say anything about the inhabitants of those towns. I stand by my statement that in recent years many Ayrshire towns have been devastated and tuned into industrial wastelands, not only the mining towns but also the steel towns in the Garnock valley and towns like Stevenston that have lost their main employer. If you think Ayrshire as a county is thriving then that is your opinion but my opinion is that it has been in decline in the economic and social sense for some time.the word lavatorial may be a bit strong but it was first used (not by me) in a sort of humerous reply in an exchange. I try not to abuse any group and especially not the Ayrshire white working class group that I'm a member of. As for the quant wee holiday home villages that is the last thing I would want. What I would want is communities that are viable with work for the poplations in them especially for young folk, not the social wastelands that reflect the despair felt in huge rises in drug abuse etc.

paul67...thank you for the response to my earlier points.....i can't give you as wide a flavour of how the cule's in barca are anticipating our game as i haven't been in barcelona for a couple of months...however i did speak to a friend there today who is a season ticket holder, and he advised that they expected to win through, but were nowhere near as confident as they were a couple of months ago....apparantly the sports pundits there now accept we are quite a bit more than artur + 10......their view is that we have improved quite a bit from a skill perspective since our last meeting....

my view is that if etoo does not make it we are very slight underdogs....if he makes it i would say it is 65/35 in barca's favour....
my wish , other than a celtic victory, is that we take the opportunity to display the type of skills we made our name on as a club....
and to demonstrate that anti football on the pitch and off of it is the preserve of edwards lot..

I see following the announcement of the Man in Black for the Killie v The Dross, the odds for a penalty being awarded in that match have shortened from - 5/2 to 7/4.

What happened in the last 24 hours to inspire the impartial bookies, whose god is the dollar, to do that?

Three hours until pills time. I’ll make it.

    PedroCelt,

Genius, sheer genius! I saw that a couple of years ago when it was supposed to be Neil Warnock and Sheffield Utd I think, but it feels so apt with Murray and the rest somehow...

Incidentally, "Downfall", the original film, is a brilliant watch...

You may have left to come across to the Dear Green Place, but if not....

I will be in the Whistlin Kirk from circa 10.00. However I will drag myself away to deliver tickets to you in BBs at circa 12.00 after circa 6 pints of Guiness. Is circa the plural of Circus??

Anyway my life as moderate sociable drinker, came to sudden stop.

The sort-of-wagon I was partially on came to as shuddering halt yesterday, I fell off, it then rolled over me...and I woke up with a Celtic shop bag.....a receipt wae a lot of things on it for a lot of money....but nothin in the bag.

Today will be a day when only the result matters, though this will be said about every game we now play to the end of the season.

Hearts will be right up for this & the Bhoys need to stand up & be counted as they have been doing recently.

A win, however it comes, will show our southside neighbours that we are ready to take on the challenge of winning our 3rd title in a row.

Everyone going today will need to get right behind the team.

    Hail Hail

First time poster to CQN, firstly congratualtions on a great site and wonderful forum Paul! I have been lurking about for a while and it have decided to finally take the plunge and post!

Managed to catch the game today on the net and over the past few weeks, I have been impressed by the level of performances. I look back to Nov/Dec time and now it is night and day between the level of consistency that we are finally achieving, I think that the fear of losing the league to them has finally got into the players. Hopefully, we can maintain this form over the next few months and it will finally lead to achieving our goal of 3 in a row!
