New faces will have several Celtic players looking over their shoulder

Amid all the excitement surrounding the transfer window and resultant feeling of wellbeing it is back to the real business of winning football games for Gordon Strachan and his players tomorrow.

Kilmarnock have twice proven to be awkward opponents at Celtic Park this season, where they drew 0-0 and lost to an own goal, though Celtic produced one of their best performances of the season during the first half of their visit to Rugby Park in November.

While most eyes will be on the new faces, I am hoping to see a reaction from the existing squad. Several players must be looking over their shoulders today wondering where all these new faces are going to fit in. Good.

I except Andreas Hinkel will not be risked, although he will return to action next week.

I think the first one who should be looking over his shoulder would be JVOH.

Either the Scottish game does not suit him, or he is just lazy and slow.

That notoriously unreliable site FansFC says that Strachan still has some unattatched players in his sights. Is this the case and what decent players are without clubs right now?

Also, not including players sold, what would our budget likely to be for the summer and would CL qualification have a bearing on this? You were bang on the money with Rangers spend in the summer. Would you expect a similar outlay or will the tighten the purse strings do you think?

"On 20th December 2007 Albelda, along with Santiago Cañizares and Miguel Ángel Angulo were axed from the Valencia squad by recently arrived coach Ronald Koeman. On 2nd January 2008 Albelda's lawyer claimed that Valencia have ignored his client's plea for an amicable end to the player's contract, meaning that legal recourse is now the only possible avenue. With news of this hitting the media, several teams, although he will not be able to join any Spanish team for the remainder of the season, having played more than 4 league games, have studied the possibility of signing him in the winter transfer window and are hoping that he will be given a free transfer."

Could we get him if he was released or would we have to wait till the summer?

The Crown Inn is only a wee pub I am afraid. It has both lounge and public bars, and offers entertainment through a Music Box on the wall (c/w impressive selection of Jimmy Shand "hits"), a television with a extensive range of free to air channel (nae Sky there, too expensive, don't you know!!), a dart board and two recently recovered pool tables. As well as a selection of crisps (some in date) in all of your favourite flavours, and a fridge possitively brimming in bottled real beer (none of your plastic lager crap, thank you very much!), such as Arran Blonde and Dark, various Belhaven (60/- & 80/-, St. Andrew's Ale, etc), Whitbread, Red McGregor, Caledonian 80/-, IPA, etc, etc.

The Crown Inn is of course, known the world over as being pablo's favourite bar in Turra.

As to the weather, a wee bittie chilly today, sitting just below zero with a 40 knot northerly and drifting snow. May have to put on a second tee-shirt when heading down to the afore-mentioned Crown Inn later this evening. Och weel, it's just anither Scottish summer's day.

" Robson has scored 12 on his own"
Can we all please remember that Robsons 12 goals include 6 penalties.
He also has a few free kicks.
In the SPL this season I think he has scored 2 in open play from his 9.
If we build up an unfair expectation of the player we will have the headcases screaming abuse at him after two games without a goal. His role is to provide balance and energy not to be a goal machine.

I find myself despairing at the lack of respect shown at Donati - "working in pizza express". Pretty poor show IMO. Watched on Setanta, he seemed to be the only midfielder able to make a pass against Falkirk.

He still plays for Celtic, isn't that worthy of your respect at all?

Why is Aiden exempt? Isn't Barry Robson a left-sided midfielder too? From what I've seen, a more direct one too.

IMO, the ONLY one who should be avoiding the proverbial stiff neck is Big Artur.

I saw Hartley as an attacking midfield player at Hearts. He's never played this role at Celtic due to our tactic of playing the central midfield players in deep positions. For me his goal in Moscow showed what he could do in a more forward position.

I don't see Hartley or Robson as the tough tackling types they have been described as on here.

MTWX-Aiden Mcgeady will be POTY if we make it 3 in a row. He has improved so much this year and has done it off his own bat.

Artur the Great of course marches to the beat of a different drum and isn't interested in Earthly baubles.

Sorry Kano... In case you're wondering I moved the post because of a typo...

To answer your question... No, not at all Just in my humble opinion. I don't think anyone's position should be safe. It's just that I reckon Big Artur's position is untouchable at this moment in time.

I think he is the only person in our team who could walk into any other team in the galaxy tomorrow!

  • At 01/02/08 16:37, Blogger Islandexile said…

He was definitely an attacking midfielder at Hearts, he is now unfortunately a "utility" player which means struggles to get in the team anywhere unless the first choice is injured. For the money think he has been more effective than Brown. WHo occasionaly looks brilliant but mostly runs around a lot fouling people and dragging shots well wide.

Aiden will be happy with the winter window as the two main contenders (other than Skippy)to him winning POTY have lessened their chances.

Robson coming to us and getting less games probably will make it harder for him to get POTY.(I know he could come in and play loads and therefore enhance his chances but I do think his chances have reduced)

Hutton away severely reduces his chances and although they will still want to give him it, the fact he hasn't played in the 2nd half of the season should be enough to see him out of contention.

Just keep it going Aiden and POTY for you my son

Well looks like a good bit of business was done during this window. I notice there have been some complaints re the left back and centre half position, as far as the former is concerned we do have Willo on his way back, Bazz can also fill in there and both JPDD, who it seems may be ready by next month, and Andy Hinkel can also play this position. As Paul stated but for injury the Madrid 1 may have arrived and this may be the reason we still have Big Bob who it looks as if is playing well over in Africa, let’s hope he stays free of injury.

The squad for me looks very strong now and with the youthfulness there it all augers well for the future, after we retain the title this year I can see us going on a run that could emulate our own NIAR.

This past year in the market has pleased me no end as we have shown we are definitely soaring away fae the monkees as we did during the Big Mhan’s reign. However, as we all know it wasn’t always this way.

In the summer of 1962 the St. Mirren left half, one of the brightest talents in the Scottish game, was put up for sale.

The season before we had lost our own cultured left half and captain when he retired and returned tae the “Black North”. This was a position we were struggling to fill and although John Clark would become our sweeper 5 years later he evidently was not ready for it at the time.

Our team announced over the tannoy at the time was Haffey, Mackay and Kennedy, Crerand, McNeill and ???????????.

All fine players who were either internationalist or would be, so the opportunity to sign a sophisticated left half was a dream for the Tims.

Three teams bid for “Dandy” as he was called, Us, Them and Sheffield Wednesday, unusually all three offered the same amount, £27,500a Scottish record at that time, which was accepted by the Buddies and it was now down to the player.

Dandy opted for the darnel, now interestingly although they had just clinched the Scottish Cup they were NOT at that time the best side in the country as Dundee were champions and the Jambos had won the League Cup.

Also they already had two left halfs on their books including Slim Jim and Billy Stevenson, the latter having emigrated to Australia due to losing his place to the Fifer before returning in October ’62 to sign for Bill Shankly’s Liverpool, as the huns still held his registration they received a transfer fee of around £20,000, this indicates the talent already there in that position.

So here were we left still struggling for a player for this position and although we did sign former Falkirk and Airdrie player Billy Price, he was only a stop gap as was moving Jim Kennedy forward after the emergence of Tommy Gemmell until the Hoover was ready.

As it was big Dandy was played at inside left alongside Jim Forrest where they formed a prolific partnership, gaining 2 League, 2 League cup and 4 Scottish cup medals, however, his eyepox career came to an end shortly after the infamous Scottish Cup defeat to Berwick where both he and his striking partner were deemed entirely to blame, and both were dropped and transferred within weeks.

It should be noted here that he never played left half for the huns and never gained any full or league international honours, IMHO a wasted talent who was only signed tae stop us fae getting him.

That’s why I gained satisfaction when we nipped in and signed the likes of Wispy, wee Provan and Murdo who were all coveted by the huns.

Although they later on out muscled us with the wee ratbag who is over here in TO, big Lurch fae the Arabs and McLaren fae swinecastle, it all tastes sweeter now that they cannae even compete with us, Deeks, Paul Hartley, Skippy, Skoosh, Georgios and Barry Robson are testament tae that.
