Portents ominous as Celtic enjoy final appearance in Deloitte list

From a financial perspective, season 2006-07 was as good as it gets for Celtic. League and Scottish Cup winners prize money, Champions League qualification and a game against AC Milan in the knock out stage.

Season ticket sales were high and sponsorships were fully attributed. The club have partnerships with a myriad of organisations, most of whom pay money for the privilege of taking clients along for some hospitality.

Our cherubic chief executive has been at the top of his game, but I have a nagging feeling that I should not whip-up our status as 17th richest club in the Deloitte money league.

When the figures are compiled for this season, the new FA Premier League TV deal will show its effect; 20 clubs with an average of £40m p.a. TV money! Despite all our successes, Celtic’s total turnover was only £75m (the £76m figure reported by Deloitte was subject to a currency adjustment), we might just make the top 20 in Britain.

Manchester City and West Ham United both dropped out of this year’s list (West Ham United, good grief!), but they and/or others of the same ilk will be back next year, pushing Celtic closer to the financial margins.

This could be our last appearance in the Deloitte list until a change in our football environment provides the club with a more appropriate financial and competitive stage. One year from now you will read that Celtic are one of the club to drop out of the list; two years from now the list will be an irrelevance to us.

The football portents are not good.

Regarding the revaluation of Ibrox :-

I know its obvious but there's never a truer word said than that something is only worth what someone prepared to pay for it and you can of course have all the valuations you like but if the market wont bear the price you want youre unlikely to be able to change that.

That , given the vagaries of such a specialist property market and the fact that almost any commercial property will have debt secured on it, means that the actual net worth of a heritable asset can fluctuate enormously and any snapshot valuation is as good as meaningless within weeks/ months of being carried out.

The only question worth asking is what is left once a willing buyer has paid the current market price and the seller has cleared all the debt , including any debt to the secured creditor which is not ostensibly linked to the property but is covered by the "all sums due " nature of most securites/ charges

Mcmanus69 thanks for the link -- you should repost on here its a brilliant read.

Just to re-iterate but also paraphrase and expand slightly.

    Turnover does not equal Richness.

    For instance.

Abramovich is very Rich, Chelsea are very poor AND still making a massive year on year Loss. Chelsea however have a huge turnover.

Glazer is very rich, Man U have a huge turnover, but the club itself are poor although still making yearly profit.

I could come up with all sorts of financial ratios that put Celtic top, bottom, in the middle of a top twenty list. For instance if we take ratio of income to profit, where would we stand in relation to net debt, where would we stand?

    Turnover!! What was Enron's or Andersons'...or Worldcom's???

    Or for that matter mine.

Last year my turnover in following Celtic put me in the top twenty of people in my street. Unfortunately income was substantially less than outgoings!

This year therefore I am skint and will have to come up with some wheezes to generate some readies. Otherwise "what's that comin over the hill? it's an IVA" or even worse I won't be able to afford Moscow for the final.

Next year I will thumb a lift, pedal, walk, use easy-jet or Ryan air and sleep in cashpoint lobbies with a strategically placed cap for any crumbs from the rich-man's table.

Fortunately I will still see the games but my turnover will be down, but my financial well being will be enhanced.

I will therefore fall out of the street's top twenty list.

    Proposed Theory

If we are are 17th in turnover, then reaching the final 16 in the Champions League should be the norm nearly every season giving that there are 6 EPL teams ahead of us making a bigger turnover and only 4 of the teams can enter the CL from the EPL.

If all the other country teams ahead us qualify for the CL then we would be the 15th biggest turnover team in the CL, so we should expect a final 16 place as a minimum return in the CL nearly every year. Also if some of the teams ahead of us have crippling debts to service then we would move up a few places too.

    If X = turnover
    Y = Home winning record
(E = mc2)the relative chances of of winning the CL in any giving year

    Z = Magic of Aiden
    Q = holy goalie

    (X+Y)x(E = mc2)/Z x Q = 2008 CL Champions

Off course this theory does not take into considerations injuries, bad draws, up and coming teams and Masonic referee decisions. So as flaw as my theory is it undeniable, unquestionable and without a doubt a Theory.

I dont really think it matters if we are on this rich list. As you say Paul67 west ham are on it, what have they won and when did they last play Barca?

If we can keep producing players like big Mick and wee Aiden, and the scounts can keep unearthing gems like THG and Naka then it shouldnt really matter... Should it?

On another point, is there any chance you could do an article on the curious bookings dished out to Aiden and the imbalance of games the Cheat has had incharge of his cloven hoved bretheren? Would be interesting to see if the rags or the radio brought it up.

Im sure if Aiden gets susended again its 3 games he misses. Whats the betting our 3 games against the rats come in quick order?

Something has to give when the next setanta contract expires.

I know discussions will take place before that happens, probably over an extension to the contract, or indeed new discussions with SKY who may come back into the scene with an offer.

I think that SKY will certainly be involved for the next negotitations which should be a good thing as the offer will certainly be of a higher standard, both in terms of product and value paid.

By the time this happens (2 years i think) as the setanta deal was 4 years (stupidly) Celtic will be bigger and better and I believe SKY will want us back on board again

We must be the biggest team in the world in terms of fan base watching games as i have never known any other club in the world to have as many supporters clubs abroad as us, many of these clubs gather to watch the games. The market audience for Celtic is unbeatable in my opinion.

    Hello Paul,

Work duties in Englandshire have kept me from posting for a while, and it looks like the team has picked up considerably in my absence! For the first time in a long time I am approaching an SPL game at Celtic Park in the real belief that I will see some great attacking football. it's a good feeling, like the first day of Spring after a long Russian winter!

    Coupla random thoughts...

Re: Deloitte. It was inevitable that this list would soon become little more than an amalgam of the top 4 or 5 in England Spain Germany and Italy. TV monies now distort football in Europe to such an extent that even mediocre EPL clubs are bona fide global powerhouses when it comes to spending power. Unless we get a piece of that, we will not feature on the list again.

However, is this necessarily a bad thing? As other posters have pointed out, turnover does not equal wealth. I know a Chelsea fan who wakes up every morning dreading the news that Abramovich has fallen under the wheels of a bus! At least our structure and revenues seems more solid and sensible than many above us on that list.

Re: Aiden & bookings. Someone posted yesterday that McCurry booked more Celtic players in one match than he has booked Rangers players all season (and he refs them one in every three games!). Also, Aiden has had more bookings than Cuellar & Weir combined.

If this were the EPL, such a suspicious set of statistics would be analysed to death on Sky and MotD...

Perhaps Gordon himself could raise this anomaly before the Hertz game, and see who picks up on it...?

I’m sure it was posted on here that the accountancy practice Murray uses to value Ibrox and Murray Park where getting done away with, is this right??

If the way they value Ibrox and Murray Park stays the same for years to come, I can’t see Murray selling Rangers to anyone, unless they get one hell of a offer for the club.

If you look at MIH debt to assets then take off the value of Ibrox and Murray Park it will be MIH that will be near insolvent. (Remembering MIH has the largest shareholding in Rangers)

Saying all that I might just be talking rubbish....:-)

did you write this article with the new financial font.

I believe that being off the list of the top 20 is a good thing.

Any potential investors for football clubs not knowing football, which seems to be the case down south, would probably look at the top 20 as a measure of good investments vehicles.

Therefore if we are not on the list, all the better!.

As the ownership of these companies ( they could be fish packers for all the owners are concerned) fall into the hands of profit driven mavericks, the need for new income streams is needed year on year. This is where Celtic and their greatest asset, the fans, come into play. Reading Vrs Bolton in L.A…………..who cares? Man U Vrs Celtic………..now you have a story, and a game to sell. I see the US and Asian associations have come out strongly againsty the insane EPL plan to play abroad.

Tellingly, the only place where interest is reported is Saudi Arabia, who have expressed an interest in holding matches "if they involve Manunited, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea"

So Bolton may well become the 17th richest club in the world. But I'd bet the number of fans they have outside Lancashire barely makes it into double figures.

I've never been a fan of us moving to the EPL to chase their dollar, but would love the idea of us joining up with the likes of the Dutch, Portuguese,Belgians, and perhaps even the French for a Euro league. This would undoubtedly enable us to generate revenues from TV deals that would better reflect our global appeal. Of course by uniting all these leagues, and therefore reducing there representatives in the CL, would this further tighten the Anglo-Italo-Spanish stranglehold on the competition?

    Ah the conudra!!!

Listening to the commentary for the huns game last night, first on radio, then TV, I was amazed at the comments of the commentators and pundits when Rangers were penalised for fouls, saying things like "that would have been play on in the SPL"

Did they realise that what they were really saying, and what we were really hearing was "rangers would've got away with that in the SPL".

The US position is totally consistent with regulated capitalism... protect your nascent industries from rapacious competition- at least until they are strong enough to stand up for themselves. Once they are strong enough, they will be able to compete and grow in the international market. And if they can't, it will be because of their own weaknesses rather than any unfair practices.

Adam Smith (if not Milton Friedman) would have approved.

As for Wembley, yes the NFL may lose the use of the north london white elephant, but the NFL was not acting in competition with a British gridiron league, so no damage to the local game could have been inflicted.

Just watching a rerun of the Lyon home game in the Champions League shown last night on Celtic TV.

That first goal is a joy to watch. 24 passes, a cross and a header. One of the best goals we've scored in the Champions League.

I have always wondered if player sales are included in these figures. Also our percentage of match-day income against overall turnover must be one of the highest given what little we get from domestic TV rights.

On match-day income we must also be almost at a peak, with the number of empty seats we see at Celtic Park nowadays maybe an indicator that there will probably be less season-book holders next year, putting us at a further disadvantage.

To think tint Bristol City, if they remain where they are just now, will earn around £40million in TV rights! Some things just ain't fair!

Do you know how much of an effect interest owed to bank by football clubs has? Could different in interested from Celtic's low debts in comparison to Ranger's large debts be enough to say pay for Robson's transfer fee?

If that is the case then are Rangers essentially weakening their budget for future transfer windows every time they have a spending spree to try and catch up on Celtic?

As for the rich list I have mixed responses towards it. The main movers are the English clubs which probably affects us mostly on a psychological level rather than on footballing level. Let's face it, it doesn't matter if West Ham move above us as we're not going to be playing them in the Champions League. Man U may be getting richer but it probably won’t mean we'll struggle against them more than we already do. Our main concern is with the other big clubs in Europe and we seem to be holding our own financially with the exception of the top clubs in France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. We're coping when we play these teams in Europe and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'm a little worried about the transfer market though. Clubs like West Ham, Birmingham, and Portsmouth etc are always sniffing around our targets. It hasn't been too much of a hindrance in the past but with their financial strength it might not be so easy in the future. We need to continue our policy of being as quiet as possible in our dealings until they are sealed.

On selling, I don't see us becoming a selling club but we might benefit from English clubs willing to pay crazy money on our relatively average players.

Instant success is demanded in the EPL now that money is readily available; this means that clubs are less willing to make long-term plans. Managers are getting sacked left right and centre, they cannot afford to wait for a player to develop. Celtic's model of signing young and talented players must be continued. Some people were surprised that we signed Brown for 4m and for the fees being suggested for Lafferty. With the money flying around England it is very possible to make a healthy profit on these young players even with the high cost evolved in bringing them in. Newcastle are apparently happy to spend 10m on him already which says it all.

I think we'll cope alright with the challenges we're facing but it's not going to be an easy ride certainly. I just hope that the fans can appreciate the difficulty which the club faces in keeping the high standard which we are lucky to get.

Paul67 (West Ham United, good grief!). I fail to understand what that statement actualy adheres to. There does seem to be a misplaced view or indeed a blinkered one on this site re West ham.

Has anyone actually been to the east end of London or essex to see the fan base the club has.

West ham are going to move to an all seater 60000 stadium situated at West ham, the plans are already underway.

Their fans I can assure you are just as passionate about their club as Celtic supporters are. I just dont get this idea (is it snobbery, or misplaced perceptions ???), that because they are currently tied to a 35000 stadia that they should be ridiculed. I have lived amongst these people and I can assure you that should they ever meet Celtic in a euro game Glasgow would be awash with claret and blue. Apart from Man utd I would say their away support is the biggest in England.

TLWIO, indeed. “Given the vagaries of such a specialist property market and the fact that almost any commercial property will have debt secured on it, means that the actual net worth of a heritable asset can fluctuate enormously and any snapshot valuation is as good as meaningless within weeks/ months of being carried out” is all you hear these days in the North Stand Upper.

Rodrow, in the UK (and ever other country I know about) players only have a balance sheet valuation if money has been paid for their transfer registration. Youth development costs do not count.

The (residual) value is amortised evenly over the remaining period of a players contract.

Bazzabhoy, while the likes of West Ham are doomed to remain where they are in life, they will have enough resources to make it increasingly difficult for Celtic to attract and retain players.

Bhoy Molloy, I see no evidence of Celtic pursuing any strategy to leave the SPL.

This is not necessarily a failing, they may have exhausted all opportunities, but I would be busy building support for a change with the Dutch and Portuguese clubs.

Lennondinho, Sky have a full programme of football, I don’t expect them to make a serious bid next time around.

The Man at The Chip Shop, absolutely. Sky 6-month profits turned into a loss to end Dec for the first time in many years. While there were several reasons for this, I think a bubble is in progress.

Narrowbhoat, the USA is not the home of the free market, in fact, it is an extremely well protected market and always has been.

An economic historian would tell you that protectionism was key to developing the fledgling US economy when it was vulnerable to Europe, and might also say the same for today’s developing economies.

‘Free market advocacy’ is not regarded as a virtue in American politics.

He truly was a one-off. For a foreigner to come in and be as loyal to Celtic as you or I would have been was special, especially coming right after the badge-kissers we had before him who ran at the first chance.

    shoot that dug

That season stank to high heaven. The 3 penalties game at Dundee for me was the lowlight. The third in particular made me sick when you saw their full back, Dave McKay, who had openly stated he was a massive Rangers fan, inexplicably punching the ball away in the box with a couple of minutes to go.

The other ones that stick out for me was working on the taxi backshift on the Saturday night, Jimmy Calderwood is on BBC Radio Scotland. I can't remember the exact words but it went along the lines of 'my dad will be in the Rangers end tomorrow and will kill me if we stop them winning the league. We're just going there to ENJOY THE OCCASION!'. Unbeleivable. Then we see Scott Wilson in the last minute giving away the most needless penalty you will ever see.

Add to that the Kilamrnock fans celebrations and their players time-wasting whilst being beaten it makes the last 2 weeks results all the sweeter.

This year, in my opinion is worse as the stuff in 2002/03 was blatant. It's all being done in a more sinister way this year, and in a way that can be defended easily.

It will make winning the title this year all the more enjoyable.

I don't see where this idea of an EPL bubble comes from. Sport in general and football in particular are likely to become more popular in the foreseeable future.

Globally the EPL & it's teams are the easiest to identify with. As incomes rise in the developing world the value of the EPL's global TV rights will continue to rise.

England will continue to attract players & coaches from overseas which will enhance it's global appeal.

With regard to the apparently creative, & inexplicable, book rise in the valuation of Ibrox & Murray Park.
I am , as a complete layman, at a loss to understand how these wildly optimistic values are able to escape scrutiny by independent accountants.
Or, am I being completely naive.
Even if we assume that a certain amount of the Nelson's eye technique is prevalent in the accountancy, why would the bank( HBOS ) providing the credit facility to cover these inflated values, put itself in such a vulnerable situation. There is now only £114m. between MIH's book value & their total debts.
This could be virtually wiped out by the difference between the actual value & the BOOK value of Ibrox & Murray Park.
Should any of us who are Celtic supporting shareholders of HBOS be putting pressure on the company to justify the exposure to which they are subjecting OUR money ?
As I have said, I am a compete layman in these matters, & I am sure that some of the more financially astute CQN posters will be able to educate me.

    Alobundy,

About ten years ago I lived in London. In a desperate attempt to fill my lonely Saturday afternoons I tried every EPL club to fill the Celtic-shaped hole in my weekend.

All of London's clubs I found shallow, dull, uninteresting, plastic, and small-time. Arsenal played decent football, but their ground was about as inspiring as Easter Road and their fans an unbearable lot on the whole.

There was one exception: The Hammers. Real football, real fans, a real good atmosphere. Without a doubt theirs is the only London club I would go back to. In terms of fanbase and history they certainly outstrip Chelsea. Unfortunately, Fulham's second club has the stolen riches of Siberia in its bank account...

"Scotland is the ideological home of the free market" why? because Adam Smith was born in Kirkcaldy Scotland, maybe if you exchange 'ideological' with 'ancestral' you might be closer to a truer statement. For the ideological home of the free market has to be Chicago home of the The Chicago School of Economics that allowed Friedman, Stigler and Hayek an opportunity to influence the World Bank, IMF and the US Government (Reagonomics)with free market solutions.Russia, Iraq and Chile is prime example of where you had free market solutions pressure by the IMF who in turned is pressured by the US. The US motto should be 'Do as I preach but not what I do'

Of course the US has regulations to protect their markets they would be mad not too, true free market economy would lead us back to serfdom. In fact our economy thanks to the Brown/Blair axis is more deregulated than the US.

By now we should have compiled sufficient stats on the SPL referees so that during prematch interviews, Gordon could pass comment on what kind of performance he is expecting from the ref during the game to follow. They play a huge part in deciding the outcome of the game, so why not comment on what we think might happen. What would be the harm in that? It would at least let them know they are indeed being watched. Doing nothing at all guarantees there will be no change whatsoever in their behaviour towards us.

Through the draft[ worse team gets first pick] the NFL tries to keep the league competitive, with varying degrees of success. What will damage the EPL[ and also the FACup] is the perception that only the 'big 4'- or 2/3 - can win anything. English football will turn into-shock! horror! Scottish football, with more money and better players but with the same lack of genuine competitiveness.

your defence of american protectionism simply flies in the face of fact, in my game I spend a lot of time visiting manufacturers to validate their test procedures, one product in particular is heavily protected. Generators, and large power systems, the yanks have massive inroads into europe, however when european manufacturers attempt to break into the US market the national authorities move the goalposts to protect their industry, if we tried this with them they would be screaming blue murder and squealing trade war. Over the last 10 years I have noted in the construction industery at least the reduction of US manufactured equipment and we are now more likely to turn to out local neighbours for equipment, and not before time, IMO the advantage of this strategy for us, is that we are no longer shackled or as dependent on the US econome as we once were.
Oh and their fledgling banana industry what was that fight about.

"AC Milan are getting old and in the past year or so, despite that win over Liverpool in Greece last May, it is beginning to show. They look a tired side.

"We will find it easier than people are expecting. In the group stages they played Celtic and, to be honest, they hardly ripped them apart."

Milan didn't exactly tear us apart last year either but they certainly did so with Manchester United in their next game.

Maybe I'm being too harsh on Merson as his quotes are probably taken out of context but irritating all the same.

the exact amount in rangers accounts for property revaluation is £59.5 million......this is the amount that they are valuing their property at in excess of what it cost them...

i think paul67's article from march 2006 summed up the situation perfectly, however it does appear that rangers have not changed their valuation policy and are now in breach of the guidlines issued by the rics...

    pauls article in full below

New consequences of stadium revaluation to avoid insolvency emerge for football clubs

International Financial Reporting Standards advice on how assets such as a football stadium are valued, where a market price has never been established has changed recently.

To reflect this, from 2005 the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Appraisal and Valuation Standards book (the Red Book), has issued new advice, that valuations must be based on the ‘market value’ of the asset, not simply the commercial value to the owner.

Celtic currently value their property assets at £37m and could be exposed to a modest depreciation charge.

Three years ago Rangers undertook a revaluation of their property assets, bringing their total value at that time to £119m, a £39m addition. This revaluation saved Rangers from insolvency.

Their potential exposure to a market valuation is enormous, and may well have an impact on any sale or refinancing of the Ibrox club.

    Paul et al,

long, long term lurker and have decided to do my first attempt at the blog thing. Reading this blog has been a joy, so time for a contribution.

I was fuming at the decision of the (non)penalty at Aberdeen. So the MIB thinks, ach well the dons are taking a hammering I'll just let them off with this one. It is just not on. I can certainly remember (painfully) in the not too distant past the league being decided on goal difference.

The rules are the rules and should be adhered to, not laughed off. I wasn't laughing.

Celtic will win the League this year, we are too strong and gaining momentum weekly. I have faith, we should all keep it!

    Sir Paul

The financial health of any entity, has a built in thermometer.

This meter will rise and fall in tandem with the amount of heat generated by, among other things.... anxiety, regarding the future.

Something akin to the action of Blood Pressure in the Human Body.

There is a proverb, to the effect ,that when Poverty comes in the window, Love goes out the door.

The Income Figure on any Balance Sheet, does not always..indeed, seldom...reflect/reflects, the Financial Health of that entity.

That main secret to LONG LASTING financial well being, is being able to conduct one's plans for the future, in a Virtual Debt Free environment.

For the amount of DEBT that is carried....and in a SMALL NUMBER OF CASES...NOT CARRIED!... on the Books of the entity, is the one and Only TRUE REFLECTOR of it's Financial well being, when extrapolated into, the FUTURE!

As an aside... Before I even consider investing in any Company... My foist move is to check it's Credit Ratings, at one of the Credit Rating Corporations... MOODY'S, being my favorite, but they are all excellent.

It has been mentioned before on this site, that a small controllable amount of Debt carried by a Corporation, is not an inherently bad thing.
    This is true.

To explain my point in a more clearer fashion...

When I mention the woid DEBT, in this dissertation, I am referring to LONG TERM DEBT.

A List, that only Dwells on the Annual Gross or Net Income of a Corporation, is as useful in determining the actual Financial WELL BEING of any Entity on that List, as the consultation of few chicken bones by the local Augurer would be, in assessing it's value.

Long Term unrelenting, obdurate and unflagging.... DEBT, is the Devil in the Details of ANY Company's Annual Financial Statement.
Always,was...always will be... and will ...simply put....

    "Get ye, in the end!"

To return to my already mentioned... Company Financial Health Thermometer.

That is an instrument, that I have had built, in a secret lab...many,many, years ago.
It has stood the test of time...rather well.

Of course, I would never... publically ..divulge ALL of the DISPARATE Financial Details, that I Glean from the Annual Financial Report of the particular Entity that has caught my Investing
Interest, as a possible candidate to add to my Stock Portfolio... and then are added to the contents of my Financial Health Thermometer.

However, I can tell you, that right now...the Financial Thermometer of CELTICFC PLC., is INDICATING THAT A HEALTHY WIND OF CHANGE, IS OCCURRING IN IT'S FINANCIAL HEALTH.

The Present NUMBER, that has been Highlighted on my instrument, explains the current Interest that has been ...unexpectedly?..focused on it's shares as being a prospective profitable financial vehicle for investment...FOR THE FUTURE... by a number of SHREWD AND SUCCESSFUL INVESTORS.

    Nota Bene.

The SHARE PRICE of a Corp. has nothing whatsover to do with it's Investing PROFIT Potential.

A 70pence Share, if it DOUBLED IN VALUE... reflects the exact same PROFIT PERCENTAGE, as a 60 Pound one would, if it Doubled to 120 Pounds.

In fact, the LOWER the share price.... the MORE POSSIBILITY OF IT'S DOUBLING!

Which is why of course... I am Heavily into SILVER.
But that is a whole other Subject.

There again... I caution that this submission from me in no way reflects an invitation or encouragement, for my reader/readers to INVEST in any of the entities named in this discussion.

I offer ALL of the contained information in this missive, merely as an interesting, Educational Financial Exercise.

    Kojo.

swept aside and keevins got me, I'll never forgive myself. when he asked did I think the cheat was a cheat I was lost. I then had to quote WGS 9 bookings for first offence. snookered and lost the upperhand.

    Canamalar,

Celtic have had 37 SPL yellow cards.

Mike McCurry has issued 12 of them in 4 games. That means that 32% of our SPL cards have been issued by Mr McCurry in 17% of our games.

Or 30% of his cards have been issued against Celtic players.

Make of that what you will, but it's clear his nonsense performance at Ibrox swamps all the stats.

We can make stats say what we want them to - it's observing the run of the mill decisions and mistakes this season by Mr McCurry which leaves me wondering why he keeps being awarded big games while obviously making bad errors.

there is a benefit in the huge money down south as rankers have shown with boumsong and hutton
(£16M REPEAT £16MI££ION !! profit) while possibly winning the league in the seasons they sold them!

Id be looking to move a player down south every 12-18mth if I was in PL's shoes.

remember when engerlish footie was on its knees, post heysel?
how succesful were celtic at that time?

Ages ago, I tried to suggest that people could try to add a 'referring to' type comment (like re TimDaft @ 10.45 then add your add yr comment). It was taken up by a few but then fell away. Like tonight, I'm trying to catch up and I'm getting all sorts of stuff about Adam Smith and Scotland being the home of the free market (surely I mis-read that?) but I can't track back and join in.

Anyway - as we say over here "You played a blinder", He's a horrible wee sh!te and only one of a number of media pundits yo whom objective. investigative journalism is foreign.

Several years ago - more than I want to remember, I had a rant about him and Charlie Nicholas published in The Celtic View - Star letter no less. The letter caused a stir and Matt McGlone referred to it in the next issue. This behaviour of his - and others has been going on for so long - we have to keep highlighting it.

Mcgroryforasenal does make a very good point about leaving Scottish Football behind.

For all Spurs and Newcastle's TV money they are no nearer breaking into the top four despite Liverpool's lack of form.

As well as increased TV revenue and sponsorship, season ticket prices would go threw the roof.

We are the new superpower of Scottish Football which should give us a better than even chance of entering the Champions League group stage every season. In the Premiership there would be no guarentee of even a chance of Champions League.

Also would we win many honours down south? Thereas just now our chances of winning League titles is better than 50-50.

Sure our turnover would go through the but roof and straight into the pockets of wealthy primadonnas. Also the best players rarely come further north than North London.

So would swapping Champions League nights against Milan and Barcelona for League matches v Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea be worth it?

    kevtic,
I'm surprised at your lack of faith in our team and the possibilities, I for one believe give an even cut we would be competing with the top 4 EPL teams within two years and from then we would be taking silverware regularly including the title. This is not simply blind faith, attracting top players I would not see a problem as there are many who would gladly come, you just need to look at their faces before during and after any CL game to see the awe and admiration of the support, kid yourself not this is a big draw for players, money is important to them but with such funds we could draw the best from all over the world.

The answer to your question is no.

Celtic are bigger than a bit part in the EPL. We need to be founder members of a new Inter European league set up to compete with the English PL and Seria A and La Liga. The increase media rights will reduce the pressure to sell merchandise and is more likely to return the club to the people than is the case with the status quo.

With our global fan base there is every chance we would compete with the top four in England. And below that there is certainly nothing to be wary of.

Celtic's chances of winning regular silverware however would decrease.

Chosing a bad manager would be my biggest worry. Get it wrong and it can set you back years down south.

The flip side would be Europe. Just look at the English results on mainland Europe. They seem to be light years ahead of us in going abroad and winning when expected to do so. Yes we would definately stand a better chance of competing in Europe confidently.

Although would that be in the Champions League or UEFA Cup? In any given season it would come down to one thing - how good a manager we have.

Bhoys here is a scary tale about our local hospital, wishaw General.

Two weeks ago tonight my 86 year old mum fell and injured her left knee of a marble coffee table.

She was suffering considerable pain and my wife and I took her to Wishaw General.

Some 4 hours later she emerged with a broken Tibia and a plaster from thigh to ankle.

    So far, so good.

At a check up at the Fracture Clinic last Thursday the doctor on duty told her that her leg WAS NOT BROKEN and proceeded to take the plaster off.

She was given a Tubigrip was told that the leg would heal itself and sent home.

By this afternoon, 14 days after the original injury, she was in excruciating pain, the leg had swollen and discoloured and she was totally unable to walk even with the aid of a Zimmer.

I took her back to Wishaw General this afternoon and the doctor in charge ordered a second X Ray.

The result of this x ray was to confirm what I already knew, the leg WAS BROKEN.

My mum had her leg replastered and was told NOT TO LET ANYONE TAKE IT OFF UNTIL AT LEAST 13TH MARCH.

She has had to suffer a fractured tibia and the resultant infirmity for a entire week aided by a TUBIGRIP.

To say I am angry is an understatment.

Please say a prayer for her tonight.

A letter of complaint will be winnging its way to the General Manager tomorrow.

Just had to get this off my chest tonight and really you are the only people I can moan to.

    Thanks,

    Martin.

    kavtic,
the same applies here, in fact the same applies where ever, so I'd not consider that to be too good an argument. But IMO if we want to be the best then we need to compete with the best and in the richest surroundings and where better than the EPL, another wee consideration is the travelling support who would find it a lot easier and less expensive to travel in the UK.

Canamalar :- Part of the problem with the EPL is that they do not want you in it, I think the last time the question was raised every EPL Chairman voted against allowing Rangers and Celtic in to their league.
Another problem I see is that if it's still the EPL rather than a UK League then you could see Rangers and Celtic representing England in Europe and I have to admit I'm not keen on that.

    Ed,
I know about the EPL hostility to us trying to get a game and I dont blame them, I have stated on many sites that if I were supporting a lower division english team I would not like to lose my possible promotion chance to the glasgow teams. As far as I'm concerned the question was purely hypothetical, my answer was concerning kevtic's lack of faith in celtic ability to challange for honours.
As for your reservations about representing the english in europe, this really does surprise me coming from a supporter of the quintessentially british club (rule britania anyone), as for me, as far as I'm concerned scotland has always been very hostile to all things celtic since our inception and I would not have any reservations about deserting this little "mulicultural" backwater and let it stew in its own filth.

    My dear,dear,dear,dear, Kumpel!... Mr.Z.

I knew that "tovarich " was Russian, I interviewed a a Russian Ice Skater,once.... who kept insisting that he was my friend...why did he do that?

I have no idea.... He could not speak a woid of english, and I was way out of my depths in Russian...although, we had a Mutual Interpretator....the Interview was ...well!... let's say in was not a Memorable one.!

    I hope that "Kumpel " is acceptable,pal.

    Or is it?....

That term was given to me, to use, by.... Vito!

So, let's hope....Vito has not dropped me in the Proverbial.

    And that reminds me....

    Here is a True Story....

I have a friend who is a Native Born Hungarian.... His name is Pete(Anglisized)

His Mother, who turned out to be wonderful, charming and endearing lady in her 70's,had come over to the U.S. on her FIRST visit.

Pete, brought her to the Party, which we had held in honor of her Visit.

Pete,by the way is a very valuable and powerful client of ours.

So we went out of our way to make a Lasting Impression on his dear and sainted Mama.

When Pete and his Ma, arrived, they were ushered into the room, to cries of welcome from us and the other guests.

Pete was Resplendent in a Tux... His mother was... splendidly coifed and wearing fortune in Diamonds and dressed in a beutifull evening gown...

I stepped forward to greet her....
and I shall never forget what transpired to my dying day....

" Wellcome to America, you are looking well, I hope that you had enjoyed a pleasant journey"

    and she said.....
very sincerely....and it seemed rather loudly...

    "I LIKE MONEY!!"

The reaction from the listeners and guests... was stupifing SILENCE

And that reaction to her own comment was not lost on the Dear Lady...

Who turned to her son, who was enjoying himself immensely, in having a good laugh at everybody's expense...most of all his own mother's ...who in Embarrassment.... struck him lightly on his shoulder as she said something in Hungarian to him.

We ,of course, were completely non plussed.... Mystified.... Shocked ,would be the correct term.

But being good sports and eager to impress ,we all Politely joined in the Laughter.

Pete, then shamfacedly explained... that his Mother could not understand a word of English....
so he instructed her on what to say, in response to the first obvious greeting that was offered to her.

He told her to say the following...
Which was the English Equivalent of the Hungarian...

" I am Happy to be here in the U.S.A."

But in this case, he decided to play a prank on everybody,by telling her to say...not the reply that he told to her she would be saying, but....

    This one,instead,

    "I LIKE MONEY!"

Which she rehearsed until she had got it right, in preparation in answer to her first introduction in America.

A Mean and ridiculous prank to play on his own mother....
    However...

I can assure you....when I think back at the looks of astonishment and wonder that were evident, on all of the witnesses faces to this Startliing Reply.... I must admit....

    It was Hilarious!

There is no danger, pal ....of that trick ever being played on you...
but it is something to think about, if you ever want to liven up a party...
where the guests are mostly a bunch of "Stuffed Shirts"

    Kojo.
yer Kumpel..... who hopes that Vito did not steer me wrong, and pull a Pete on me!

    My dear,dear,dear,friend Martin42

Your tale is not one that will make the Nat.Serv. proud, I'll wager.

    Without treating the matter,lightly....

The tragic story that you have described ,concerning your dear mother's scandalously inept treatment of her injury, is a perfect example of Adding Insult to Injury.

There is no excuse.... and you know that I never accept any excuse from a Professional, who is presently, practising his trade.

The Doctor(?) who was guilty of making the Wrong Diagnosis, should be immediately reproved and relieved of his/her duties...until a full and complete investigation of the incident had been made.

Meanwhile the guilty offender should be suspended without Pay, while he/she awaites his/her fate.

That is how I would couch my letter of aggrievement and protest at such shoddy behaviour.

I know that your mother will recover...but I am afraid that that set-back in her healing process, is unforgivable, and absolutely not needed.

Best wishes and prayers for your mother.
This should not happen to the most precious people in our lives.

    Kojo
Your Hungarian tale reminds me of a Scottish friend I had in the Middle East who married a Lebanese lady.
She was a very nice and polite lady and a devout practising Catholic I think of the Maronite persuasion.
Anxious to make a good impression when she was first introduced to her mother in law, she begged Harry for the politest and most respectful greeting she could make.
Harry, who was a joker of the highest order taught her to respond to the initial greeting with

    "Poch ma hon" (spelling?)

Martin, sorry to here about your mother. Don't be surprised if all your complaints fall on deaf ears - the NHS are good at covering their backside and closing ranks to cover slip ups. I experienced a rather more serious slip up a couple of years ago with no consequences yet to be seen.

In the US, nursing students are taught the art of lawsuit avoidance as a priority ahead of basic nursing care.

In any case, tell your mother there are many people around the world feeling concern for her at this time and wishing he a speedy recovery.

The Aberdeen & other mob's result means Scotland go above Turkey into 10th place in the UEFA Rankings.

Securing 10th spot in the groupstage should help with entry to CL for next seasons SPL winners.

    Turkey have 2 teams left:
Galatasaray in the UEFA who have to play the second leg away to Bayern Leverkusen after a goalless home leg.

Fenerbache have Sevilla in the CL.

(and a sneaky wee double 21/5 Derby to beat Wigan)

Not a gambling man normally, but a team - in both fixtures - is due a bit of fortune.

    On EURO qualification:

Please be clear the position at the end of the 2006/2007 season determines the country qualification for the euro cluib tournaments which begin in season 2008/2009 !

This means as the SFA was 10th at the end of the 2006/2007, the SPL title winner in the 2007/2008. The current place allocation means next season the SPL winners enter the Champions League at Qualifying Round 3. Unless the Title Holder spot is available. Note for the title holder spot to be available the title holder must have automatically qualified for the group stage ! (ala situation at 2005 CL final where a barca win allowed us to go directly to group stage in 2006 season, but if arsenal would have won we would be in CL Q3 !)

So, the fight for 10th place is important for the 2009/2010 season, however this is when Platinis change comes into place and at that point the teams down to 12th will get an automatic place in chapions league, with the runners up the leagues in positions 7-12 entering the non-champions qualifying section. (along with league 4-6 3rd place team and league 1-3 4th place team !), this will be a hard route to the CL, harder than the current qualifying route !

The importance of this for Celtic is that :
Win the league this year, might get auto CL place, if no auto CL place, win CLQ3, hope rangers fail to make through CL qualifiers, depriving Rangers of Money.

Win league 2008/2009 season, auto CL place. Rangers have far more difficult qualifying route and fail, again depriving them of money.

Overall effect could be self-fulfilling if the money is used wisely for player acquisitions while, appropriate sales are made into the inflated EPL !

    BuddyHollyThinkingAheadCSC

PS: This is why 3-in-a-row is so important, and 4-in-a-row maybe more so !

Beware incoming stereoptypical non-pc tale of the good looking half of the species!!

Do you know what a 710 is ?

A few days ago I was having some work done at my local garage. A blonde came in and asked for a seven-hundred-and-ten.

We all looked at each other and another customer asked, 'What is a seven-hundred-and-ten?'

She replied, 'You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine, I have lost it and need a new one..' She went on to say that she did not know exactly what it was, but this piece had always been there.

The mechanic gave her a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like.

She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710. He then took her over to another car which had its hood up and asked 'Is there a 710 on this car?'

She pointed and said, 'Of course, its right there.'

    AND HERE IS THE ....710

    Kille v Dross

    1.) 5/2 A penalty in the match
2.) 6/1 Killie 9/2 Dross to score from a penalty.

(bookies obviously don’t rate Killie’s penalty takers)
Rather weird when you equate first set of odds with the second set of odds.

    3.) 4/5 Killie 11/10 Dross first booking
4.) 5/2 a sending off in the match.

Now the paranoia kicks in, just a wee bit mind, when you try to place a similar bet on any other game in the SPL and there are none on offer. (oddschecker.com/football/scottish)

    canamalar,

I never bet on the manky mob !

I have been spreading the word about mccurry to my colleagues, friends and acquaintances !

as for the country co-efficient, there are a few poor-ish years in the sliding 5-year window, so to maintian a 7-12 position needs a couple of good years to help balance it out.

In reality it is unlikely for scotland to make it to the sixth best country ! It means being better than the dutch, portugese, russians and these leagues have more depth ! Although in fairness to aberdeen they have gone way beyond even their own expectations and will make a diference to the gathered points !

As an aside if in the new access list, scotland fall to 13-15, the champion goes in the champion qualifiers, ie. only teams champions from countries 13 -> 51, while the second place team remain in the non champions qualifiers with the really hard teams.

An example of this really hard team is imagine having to beat the second best portugese team (say benfica) and then the english fourth team (say liverpool), JUST TO REACH THE CL.

Celtic would not find that easy !!

The other and way is to buy a carry out and stand on London Road and watch it on the big screen.

Or the ultimate in comfort, right in the heart of the stadium is to follow this tried and trusted method...Nah now that would be telling!

Anyway, stay at the ground till circa 15-20 mins before kick off, jump in one of the drop off taxis on London Road and get back to the relative comfort of Sharkey's, Bar 67, The Old Burnt Barns, Emerald Isle.

    To keep you going :

    CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT

I am pleased to report to you on Celtic plc's results for the six month period
    to 31 December 2007.

Last year's Annual Report outlined a highly successful year for Celtic both on
and off the park with the twin achievement of a Scottish Premier League
    Championship and exceptional financial results.

The challenge that sets the Club
in terms of maintaining standards is a significant one. Even more so since the business environment for football clubs remains very challenging indeed. The
twin pressures of producing immediate success and maintaining long-term sustainability are unremitting. There is ultimately no use buying the minutes at
the expense of the hours. Planning success in both short and long-term is
    essential.

Sustaining Celtic's strength in the longer term requires a judicious mix of
financial stability, scouting, coaching and youth development, sports science
and sensible player trading. I believe that we are continuing to make
satisfactory progress in all of these areas.

Turnover in the six months was £42.43m, down 9.3% on the same period's record
high last year, principally due to 2 fewer home matches being played and not
being Scotland's sole participant in the Champions League. Our merchandising
revenues dipped, having had only 1 new strip launch, as opposed to 2 at a
comparable stage last year , and reflecting the competitive marketplace in which
we trade. However, our supporters have continued to demonstrate their commitment
to the Club, with season ticket sales up year - on - year.

Operating costs increased by £476,000 (1.5%) to £32.52m attributable mainly to
increases in football labour costs. The increase in our football costs
demonstrates our continuing commitment to invest in the first team squad,
scouting, sports science and in developing our youth players through the
Academy. Following the end of last season we have invested more than£11m,
before allowing for any proceeds from player trading, in the acquisition of
football players to strengthen the first team squad, which has assisted in
providing success at both domestic and European levels. It has also been
particularly pleasing to see the new Lennoxtown Training Centre become fully
operational, which has led to increased integration of our football operations.

Our retained profit for the period of £10.07m compares with £17.94m last year,
again mainly due to the two fewer home games, a reduction in gains from player
trading and not being Scotlandʼs sole participant in the UCL. Strong cash
generation places our total net debt at £6.81m against £15.02m at the same time
last year. Looking forward, as with previous years trading performance in the
remaining months of the financial year, with fewer home matches scheduled, will
not be at the same level as that in the first 6 months.

Once again this year, our performance has been heavily influenced by
participation in the UEFA Champions League. The Company continues to benefit
financially and in football terms, having reached the last 16 for the second
year in succession. Credit must go to Gordon Strachan and his team for keeping
Celtic at the highest level in European football. As we go to print we look
forward to our next European ties against Barcelona, another giant in terms of
European football history. For the fans as much as the finances it is nights
like this that make a season.

We continue to make good progress in the Scottish Cup, but, disappointingly,
exited from the CIS Cup earlier than we would have liked. Winning the Clydesdale
Bank Scottish Premier League remains our primary and immediate objective. This
is no small task since it would entail winning a third championship victory in a
row, a feat last accomplished under Jock Stein. With Celtic sitting in second
place by a margin of only 4 points, there is all to play for. Your continued
support will be vital in driving towards the end of the season and achieving the
success that this Club and its fans deserve.

We also hope that the strengthening of the squad that has taken place during the
January transfer window will enhance our prospects both on and off the field.
Our strategy continues to be the strengthening of the first team squad within
our financial constraints, and to invest in the long term in the coaching,
scouting and Academy facilities of the Club. In addition, we endeavour to
maximise all revenue streams open to us and manage our cost base appropriately.

In closing, I wish to pay tribute once again to my predecessor as Chairman,
Brian Quinn, who retired at the AGM in November 2007. The contribution he has
made to the success of the Club has been enormous. I wish Brian, his family and
all Celtic supporters a prosperous and successful year.

    John Reid 14 February 2008
    Chairman
