Portents ominous as Celtic enjoy final appearance in Deloitte list

From a financial perspective, season 2006-07 was as good as it gets for Celtic. League and Scottish Cup winners prize money, Champions League qualification and a game against AC Milan in the knock out stage.

Season ticket sales were high and sponsorships were fully attributed. The club have partnerships with a myriad of organisations, most of whom pay money for the privilege of taking clients along for some hospitality.

Our cherubic chief executive has been at the top of his game, but I have a nagging feeling that I should not whip-up our status as 17th richest club in the Deloitte money league.

When the figures are compiled for this season, the new FA Premier League TV deal will show its effect; 20 clubs with an average of £40m p.a. TV money! Despite all our successes, Celtic’s total turnover was only £75m (the £76m figure reported by Deloitte was subject to a currency adjustment), we might just make the top 20 in Britain.

Manchester City and West Ham United both dropped out of this year’s list (West Ham United, good grief!), but they and/or others of the same ilk will be back next year, pushing Celtic closer to the financial margins.

This could be our last appearance in the Deloitte list until a change in our football environment provides the club with a more appropriate financial and competitive stage. One year from now you will read that Celtic are one of the club to drop out of the list; two years from now the list will be an irrelevance to us.

The football portents are not good.

Regarding the revaluation of Ibrox :-

I know its obvious but there's never a truer word said than that something is only worth what someone prepared to pay for it and you can of course have all the valuations you like but if the market wont bear the price you want youre unlikely to be able to change that.

That , given the vagaries of such a specialist property market and the fact that almost any commercial property will have debt secured on it, means that the actual net worth of a heritable asset can fluctuate enormously and any snapshot valuation is as good as meaningless within weeks/ months of being carried out.

The only question worth asking is what is left once a willing buyer has paid the current market price and the seller has cleared all the debt , including any debt to the secured creditor which is not ostensibly linked to the property but is covered by the "all sums due " nature of most securites/ charges

Just to re-iterate but also paraphrase and expand slightly.

    Turnover does not equal Richness.

    For instance.

Abramovich is very Rich, Chelsea are very poor AND still making a massive year on year Loss. Chelsea however have a huge turnover.

Glazer is very rich, Man U have a huge turnover, but the club itself are poor although still making yearly profit.

I could come up with all sorts of financial ratios that put Celtic top, bottom, in the middle of a top twenty list. For instance if we take ratio of income to profit, where would we stand in relation to net debt, where would we stand?

    Turnover!! What was Enron's or Andersons'...or Worldcom's???

    Or for that matter mine.

Last year my turnover in following Celtic put me in the top twenty of people in my street. Unfortunately income was substantially less than outgoings!

This year therefore I am skint and will have to come up with some wheezes to generate some readies. Otherwise "what's that comin over the hill? it's an IVA" or even worse I won't be able to afford Moscow for the final.

Next year I will thumb a lift, pedal, walk, use easy-jet or Ryan air and sleep in cashpoint lobbies with a strategically placed cap for any crumbs from the rich-man's table.

Fortunately I will still see the games but my turnover will be down, but my financial well being will be enhanced.

I will therefore fall out of the street's top twenty list.

    Proposed Theory

If we are are 17th in turnover, then reaching the final 16 in the Champions League should be the norm nearly every season giving that there are 6 EPL teams ahead of us making a bigger turnover and only 4 of the teams can enter the CL from the EPL.

If all the other country teams ahead us qualify for the CL then we would be the 15th biggest turnover team in the CL, so we should expect a final 16 place as a minimum return in the CL nearly every year. Also if some of the teams ahead of us have crippling debts to service then we would move up a few places too.

    If X = turnover
    Y = Home winning record
(E = mc2)the relative chances of of winning the CL in any giving year

    Z = Magic of Aiden
    Q = holy goalie

    (X+Y)x(E = mc2)/Z x Q = 2008 CL Champions

Off course this theory does not take into considerations injuries, bad draws, up and coming teams and Masonic referee decisions. So as flaw as my theory is it undeniable, unquestionable and without a doubt a Theory.

I dont really think it matters if we are on this rich list. As you say Paul67 west ham are on it, what have they won and when did they last play Barca?

If we can keep producing players like big Mick and wee Aiden, and the scounts can keep unearthing gems like THG and Naka then it shouldnt really matter... Should it?

On another point, is there any chance you could do an article on the curious bookings dished out to Aiden and the imbalance of games the Cheat has had incharge of his cloven hoved bretheren? Would be interesting to see if the rags or the radio brought it up.

Im sure if Aiden gets susended again its 3 games he misses. Whats the betting our 3 games against the rats come in quick order?

Something has to give when the next setanta contract expires.

I know discussions will take place before that happens, probably over an extension to the contract, or indeed new discussions with SKY who may come back into the scene with an offer.

I think that SKY will certainly be involved for the next negotitations which should be a good thing as the offer will certainly be of a higher standard, both in terms of product and value paid.

By the time this happens (2 years i think) as the setanta deal was 4 years (stupidly) Celtic will be bigger and better and I believe SKY will want us back on board again

We must be the biggest team in the world in terms of fan base watching games as i have never known any other club in the world to have as many supporters clubs abroad as us, many of these clubs gather to watch the games. The market audience for Celtic is unbeatable in my opinion.

    Hello Paul,

Work duties in Englandshire have kept me from posting for a while, and it looks like the team has picked up considerably in my absence! For the first time in a long time I am approaching an SPL game at Celtic Park in the real belief that I will see some great attacking football. it's a good feeling, like the first day of Spring after a long Russian winter!

    Coupla random thoughts...

Re: Deloitte. It was inevitable that this list would soon become little more than an amalgam of the top 4 or 5 in England Spain Germany and Italy. TV monies now distort football in Europe to such an extent that even mediocre EPL clubs are bona fide global powerhouses when it comes to spending power. Unless we get a piece of that, we will not feature on the list again.

However, is this necessarily a bad thing? As other posters have pointed out, turnover does not equal wealth. I know a Chelsea fan who wakes up every morning dreading the news that Abramovich has fallen under the wheels of a bus! At least our structure and revenues seems more solid and sensible than many above us on that list.

Re: Aiden & bookings. Someone posted yesterday that McCurry booked more Celtic players in one match than he has booked Rangers players all season (and he refs them one in every three games!). Also, Aiden has had more bookings than Cuellar & Weir combined.

If this were the EPL, such a suspicious set of statistics would be analysed to death on Sky and MotD...

Perhaps Gordon himself could raise this anomaly before the Hertz game, and see who picks up on it...?

I’m sure it was posted on here that the accountancy practice Murray uses to value Ibrox and Murray Park where getting done away with, is this right??

If the way they value Ibrox and Murray Park stays the same for years to come, I can’t see Murray selling Rangers to anyone, unless they get one hell of a offer for the club.

If you look at MIH debt to assets then take off the value of Ibrox and Murray Park it will be MIH that will be near insolvent. (Remembering MIH has the largest shareholding in Rangers)

Saying all that I might just be talking rubbish....:-)

did you write this article with the new financial font.

I believe that being off the list of the top 20 is a good thing.

Any potential investors for football clubs not knowing football, which seems to be the case down south, would probably look at the top 20 as a measure of good investments vehicles.

Therefore if we are not on the list, all the better!.

As the ownership of these companies ( they could be fish packers for all the owners are concerned) fall into the hands of profit driven mavericks, the need for new income streams is needed year on year. This is where Celtic and their greatest asset, the fans, come into play. Reading Vrs Bolton in L.A…………..who cares? Man U Vrs Celtic………..now you have a story, and a game to sell. I see the US and Asian associations have come out strongly againsty the insane EPL plan to play abroad.

Tellingly, the only place where interest is reported is Saudi Arabia, who have expressed an interest in holding matches "if they involve Manunited, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea"

So Bolton may well become the 17th richest club in the world. But I'd bet the number of fans they have outside Lancashire barely makes it into double figures.

I've never been a fan of us moving to the EPL to chase their dollar, but would love the idea of us joining up with the likes of the Dutch, Portuguese,Belgians, and perhaps even the French for a Euro league. This would undoubtedly enable us to generate revenues from TV deals that would better reflect our global appeal. Of course by uniting all these leagues, and therefore reducing there representatives in the CL, would this further tighten the Anglo-Italo-Spanish stranglehold on the competition?

    Ah the conudra!!!

Listening to the commentary for the huns game last night, first on radio, then TV, I was amazed at the comments of the commentators and pundits when Rangers were penalised for fouls, saying things like "that would have been play on in the SPL"

Did they realise that what they were really saying, and what we were really hearing was "rangers would've got away with that in the SPL".

The US position is totally consistent with regulated capitalism... protect your nascent industries from rapacious competition- at least until they are strong enough to stand up for themselves. Once they are strong enough, they will be able to compete and grow in the international market. And if they can't, it will be because of their own weaknesses rather than any unfair practices.

Adam Smith (if not Milton Friedman) would have approved.

As for Wembley, yes the NFL may lose the use of the north london white elephant, but the NFL was not acting in competition with a British gridiron league, so no damage to the local game could have been inflicted.

Just watching a rerun of the Lyon home game in the Champions League shown last night on Celtic TV.

That first goal is a joy to watch. 24 passes, a cross and a header. One of the best goals we've scored in the Champions League.

I have always wondered if player sales are included in these figures. Also our percentage of match-day income against overall turnover must be one of the highest given what little we get from domestic TV rights.

On match-day income we must also be almost at a peak, with the number of empty seats we see at Celtic Park nowadays maybe an indicator that there will probably be less season-book holders next year, putting us at a further disadvantage.

To think tint Bristol City, if they remain where they are just now, will earn around £40million in TV rights! Some things just ain't fair!

Do you know how much of an effect interest owed to bank by football clubs has? Could different in interested from Celtic's low debts in comparison to Ranger's large debts be enough to say pay for Robson's transfer fee?

If that is the case then are Rangers essentially weakening their budget for future transfer windows every time they have a spending spree to try and catch up on Celtic?

As for the rich list I have mixed responses towards it. The main movers are the English clubs which probably affects us mostly on a psychological level rather than on footballing level. Let's face it, it doesn't matter if West Ham move above us as we're not going to be playing them in the Champions League. Man U may be getting richer but it probably won’t mean we'll struggle against them more than we already do. Our main concern is with the other big clubs in Europe and we seem to be holding our own financially with the exception of the top clubs in France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. We're coping when we play these teams in Europe and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'm a little worried about the transfer market though. Clubs like West Ham, Birmingham, and Portsmouth etc are always sniffing around our targets. It hasn't been too much of a hindrance in the past but with their financial strength it might not be so easy in the future. We need to continue our policy of being as quiet as possible in our dealings until they are sealed.

On selling, I don't see us becoming a selling club but we might benefit from English clubs willing to pay crazy money on our relatively average players.

Instant success is demanded in the EPL now that money is readily available; this means that clubs are less willing to make long-term plans. Managers are getting sacked left right and centre, they cannot afford to wait for a player to develop. Celtic's model of signing young and talented players must be continued. Some people were surprised that we signed Brown for 4m and for the fees being suggested for Lafferty. With the money flying around England it is very possible to make a healthy profit on these young players even with the high cost evolved in bringing them in. Newcastle are apparently happy to spend 10m on him already which says it all.

I think we'll cope alright with the challenges we're facing but it's not going to be an easy ride certainly. I just hope that the fans can appreciate the difficulty which the club faces in keeping the high standard which we are lucky to get.

Has anyone actually been to the east end of London or essex to see the fan base the club has.

West ham are going to move to an all seater 60000 stadium situated at West ham, the plans are already underway.

Their fans I can assure you are just as passionate about their club as Celtic supporters are. I just dont get this idea (is it snobbery, or misplaced perceptions ???), that because they are currently tied to a 35000 stadia that they should be ridiculed. I have lived amongst these people and I can assure you that should they ever meet Celtic in a euro game Glasgow would be awash with claret and blue. Apart from Man utd I would say their away support is the biggest in England.

TLWIO, indeed. “Given the vagaries of such a specialist property market and the fact that almost any commercial property will have debt secured on it, means that the actual net worth of a heritable asset can fluctuate enormously and any snapshot valuation is as good as meaningless within weeks/ months of being carried out” is all you hear these days in the North Stand Upper.

Rodrow, in the UK (and ever other country I know about) players only have a balance sheet valuation if money has been paid for their transfer registration. Youth development costs do not count.

The (residual) value is amortised evenly over the remaining period of a players contract.

Bazzabhoy, while the likes of West Ham are doomed to remain where they are in life, they will have enough resources to make it increasingly difficult for Celtic to attract and retain players.

Bhoy Molloy, I see no evidence of Celtic pursuing any strategy to leave the SPL.

This is not necessarily a failing, they may have exhausted all opportunities, but I would be busy building support for a change with the Dutch and Portuguese clubs.

Lennondinho, Sky have a full programme of football, I don’t expect them to make a serious bid next time around.

The Man at The Chip Shop, absolutely. Sky 6-month profits turned into a loss to end Dec for the first time in many years. While there were several reasons for this, I think a bubble is in progress.

Narrowbhoat, the USA is not the home of the free market, in fact, it is an extremely well protected market and always has been.

An economic historian would tell you that protectionism was key to developing the fledgling US economy when it was vulnerable to Europe, and might also say the same for today’s developing economies.

‘Free market advocacy’ is not regarded as a virtue in American politics.

Scotland is the ideological home of the free market.

He truly was a one-off. For a foreigner to come in and be as loyal to Celtic as you or I would have been was special, especially coming right after the badge-kissers we had before him who ran at the first chance.

    shoot that dug

That season stank to high heaven. The 3 penalties game at Dundee for me was the lowlight. The third in particular made me sick when you saw their full back, Dave McKay, who had openly stated he was a massive Rangers fan, inexplicably punching the ball away in the box with a couple of minutes to go.

The other ones that stick out for me was working on the taxi backshift on the Saturday night, Jimmy Calderwood is on BBC Radio Scotland. I can't remember the exact words but it went along the lines of 'my dad will be in the Rangers end tomorrow and will kill me if we stop them winning the league. We're just going there to ENJOY THE OCCASION!'. Unbeleivable. Then we see Scott Wilson in the last minute giving away the most needless penalty you will ever see.

Add to that the Kilamrnock fans celebrations and their players time-wasting whilst being beaten it makes the last 2 weeks results all the sweeter.

This year, in my opinion is worse as the stuff in 2002/03 was blatant. It's all being done in a more sinister way this year, and in a way that can be defended easily.

It will make winning the title this year all the more enjoyable.

Maybe the shares jumped due to the formal announcement that the M74 is to begin construction? It's reportedly a boost for the economy of Glasgow and areas such as the East End as a whole.

    It's really just a by-pass :)

I don't see where this idea of an EPL bubble comes from. Sport in general and football in particular are likely to become more popular in the foreseeable future.

Globally the EPL & it's teams are the easiest to identify with. As incomes rise in the developing world the value of the EPL's global TV rights will continue to rise.

England will continue to attract players & coaches from overseas which will enhance it's global appeal.

With regard to the apparently creative, & inexplicable, book rise in the valuation of Ibrox & Murray Park.
I am , as a complete layman, at a loss to understand how these wildly optimistic values are able to escape scrutiny by independent accountants.
Or, am I being completely naive.
Even if we assume that a certain amount of the Nelson's eye technique is prevalent in the accountancy, why would the bank( HBOS ) providing the credit facility to cover these inflated values, put itself in such a vulnerable situation. There is now only £114m. between MIH's book value & their total debts.
This could be virtually wiped out by the difference between the actual value & the BOOK value of Ibrox & Murray Park.
Should any of us who are Celtic supporting shareholders of HBOS be putting pressure on the company to justify the exposure to which they are subjecting OUR money ?
As I have said, I am a compete layman in these matters, & I am sure that some of the more financially astute CQN posters will be able to educate me.

    Alobundy,

About ten years ago I lived in London. In a desperate attempt to fill my lonely Saturday afternoons I tried every EPL club to fill the Celtic-shaped hole in my weekend.

All of London's clubs I found shallow, dull, uninteresting, plastic, and small-time. Arsenal played decent football, but their ground was about as inspiring as Easter Road and their fans an unbearable lot on the whole.

There was one exception: The Hammers. Real football, real fans, a real good atmosphere. Without a doubt theirs is the only London club I would go back to. In terms of fanbase and history they certainly outstrip Chelsea. Unfortunately, Fulham's second club has the stolen riches of Siberia in its bank account...

Italiabhoy I agree with everything you say. However I never could get my head around pie mash and jellied eels, that was beyond the pale so to speak. Most of their supporters I came across were decent people, they do however like most large English clubs have an element to be avoided so to speak.

"Scotland is the ideological home of the free market" why? because Adam Smith was born in Kirkcaldy Scotland, maybe if you exchange 'ideological' with 'ancestral' you might be closer to a truer statement. For the ideological home of the free market has to be Chicago home of the The Chicago School of Economics that allowed Friedman, Stigler and Hayek an opportunity to influence the World Bank, IMF and the US Government (Reagonomics)with free market solutions.Russia, Iraq and Chile is prime example of where you had free market solutions pressure by the IMF who in turned is pressured by the US. The US motto should be 'Do as I preach but not what I do'

Of course the US has regulations to protect their markets they would be mad not too, true free market economy would lead us back to serfdom. In fact our economy thanks to the Brown/Blair axis is more deregulated than the US.

    Re Rangers property valuation.

Fortunately, Narrowbhoat's calculations can be equally applied to property valuations.

So just take his basic calculation as shown here

    Ibricks valuation rational

and substitute 'R/L to the power of 3', instead of 'C squared'.

I would suggest that it is pretty obvious that that is exactly what DM did!

By now we should have compiled sufficient stats on the SPL referees so that during prematch interviews, Gordon could pass comment on what kind of performance he is expecting from the ref during the game to follow. They play a huge part in deciding the outcome of the game, so why not comment on what we think might happen. What would be the harm in that? It would at least let them know they are indeed being watched. Doing nothing at all guarantees there will be no change whatsoever in their behaviour towards us.

Through the draft[ worse team gets first pick] the NFL tries to keep the league competitive, with varying degrees of success. What will damage the EPL[ and also the FACup] is the perception that only the 'big 4'- or 2/3 - can win anything. English football will turn into-shock! horror! Scottish football, with more money and better players but with the same lack of genuine competitiveness.

    That might burst the bubble.

    italiabhoy,
your defence of american protectionism simply flies in the face of fact, in my game I spend a lot of time visiting manufacturers to validate their test procedures, one product in particular is heavily protected. Generators, and large power systems, the yanks have massive inroads into europe, however when european manufacturers attempt to break into the US market the national authorities move the goalposts to protect their industry, if we tried this with them they would be screaming blue murder and squealing trade war. Over the last 10 years I have noted in the construction industery at least the reduction of US manufactured equipment and we are now more likely to turn to out local neighbours for equipment, and not before time, IMO the advantage of this strategy for us, is that we are no longer shackled or as dependent on the US econome as we once were.
Oh and their fledgling banana industry what was that fight about.

Regarding the Ibrox revaluations. I was sure I was told that after a set period of time (6 years is ringing a bell) property values had to be assessed by an independent valuer. I always thought that BM had placed a value on the property hoping that when the time came for the official valuation it would have reached that value or thereabout and thus the accounts wouldn;t be affected.
