Robson ready for central midfield role on Wednesday

I was really pleased to see Barry Robson play in central midfield on Saturday. He is a talent and proved against Hearts that he has the kind of menace that would make Scott Brown look over his shoulder. Maybe.

More importantly, the wide midfield berths Robson occupied while at Dundee United will only rarely become available at Celtic; central midfield has proven to be a more challenging area of the team for Gordon Strachan to get right this season.

With Brown missing on Wednesday, Robson might get his second start against Barcelona this season.

    Aw Naw, here’s another angle:

Aiden son, if the Pope himself questioned their content then it most certainly is… without contention… worth questioning.

    The NOTW???

I remember being a paper boy in the West of Glasgow in the early sixties. There were about ten of us that did the rounds and anybody that had that newspaper delivered was laughed about behind their backs by worldly wise eight year olds.

Trust me; we never knocked their doors for a Christmas Tip. (Times have changed… I know)

Even at that age we knew nobody bought that publication for its news content. We held adult Beano and Dandy readers in a higher regard.

They may well be right when they say Manchester City is considering a summer move for Aiden McGeady. I would be surprised if the boy is not the talk of numerous EPL boardrooms. I’m almost positive a few continentals are also quite aware of his undoubted abilities and are also quite interested in his future travel plans.

But the NOTW - ever heard of timing.

Brian Kerr is quoted from questionable sources as saying he (Aiden McGeady) should leave Celtic, and now we have the NOTW announcing Sven’s intended swoop.

We must have a couple of big games coming up.

Aiden Shun… money itself won’t make you a legend. Take a tip from an Auld Yin… give your respects to the Beano and the Dandy. They, at least, don’t pretend to be anything other than a kid’s comic. And for the next four years, again, at least, stay home – There is nowhere better.

I don't see where Robson fits in as it's a straight swap Hartley for Brown alongside Donati. Unless you come to the frankly shocking conclusion that Paul Hartley is playing at right back...

This game is an enjoyable side show but I'm more excited about overhauling this 4 point gap right now.

    C1st- not me!:~)

We had another exciting cameo from Samaras on Saturday. He would be an exciting signing, but the chances are we'd have to free up some of the wage bill. As Paul points out central midfield is looking well covered with Brown/Donati/Robdon/Hartley so TGravesen is the one who really needs to clear out his locker

According to the BBC transfer rumours we are going to have talks with Jussi Jaaskelainen.

They also report that Daniel Cousin will be able to sign for Fulham. How does the fact that he played last wed affect any proposed transfer?

  • At 18/02/08 12:10, Blogger Gordon_J said…

Jussi Jaaskelainen is an excellent keeper. I believe he is on a Bosman so would come for free. But I can't see him coming as a no 2 keeper.

So would we be happy with Artur leaving for say £10M and Jussi coming in for free as his replacement?

  • At 18/02/08 12:13, Blogger we need another mahe said…

    Mort,

Hopefully not at all as I believe that the fact Cousin's manager chooses to play him shows how desperate they are.

On a side note P67 and all, I think i may be correct in saying that Mark DeVries at Dundee United played this season for both Leicester and Leeds (on loan), before joining Dundee Utd. The commentator (ahem) on TV commented on the fact (during the recent arabs v buddies game) that De Vries has scored for Leeds, Leicester and now Dundee United all this season. 3 clubs? Maybe I am wrong, or more likely the closet on TV got it a over t?

Don't believe this rumour as PL and GS don't let anything out of he bag this early. I do think that Artur will move on well before his contract is out. By the way we also need new cover as I don't rate Brown as a back up.

I would rather the deal did go through, leaving them a player down and no way of replacing him.

But if it does, I think it is the start of the disintegration of the transfer window - Benjani, Cousin and Tevez fiasco just shows that the rules are not being adhered to.

Just the same as the Inter Toto is not a recognised Euro tournament until after the 3rd round. It either is or it isn't.

A transfer window that allows transfers outside the stated period (or indeed allow the monies to supposedly transfer outside the period - Boumsong), is obsolete.

As far as Caddis is concerned, I would rather play someone in their natural position, regardless of age, than someone out of position and then someone else to cover them.

  • At 18/02/08 12:16, Blogger Celtic_First said…

    Mort

This is what I don't get.

Rangers and Fulham have made a special request for Cousin to change clubs AGAIN in the transfer window just gone.

The fact that Cousin has since played for Rangers means that they must have an addition request in place to allow the transfer to take place OUTWITH the window (a separate question, surely).

Either way, they've got to be pushing their luck.

I suppose we all better get used to the headlines involving Aiden. For what is worth Heres my take.

Aiden will leave Celtic at some stage. I would say that time is a least 4 years away. He is a young man with an old head on his shoulders. He willingly signed his recent contract knowing that to do so would be the best thing for his career. Also an extremely brave young man as he would well have been aware of the forore his decision to play for ROI would cause.
He is determined to suceed and is not afraid to put in the hours to hone and develop his wonderful talent.

He is hard working, determined and honest. Everything he has done so far has been considered and well balanced listening to those around him - his father, GS - who can see the big picture.

He' ll be around for quite a few years yet. Lets all enjoy his wonderful skill and suppport him in those times when life will get difficult both on and off the pitch

According to Soccerbase Mark de Vries has played for Leicester, Leeds (on loan) and Dundee United this season.

I'm not entirely sure of the rules surrounding transfers between lower league teams but i'm pretty sure the two teams in one season rule is for top flight teams only.

I don't want to see Artur go, but he will sometime in the next few years. I would rather we got a decent sum for him and had a replacement in the wings, that's all.

On the Cousin transfer, how many requests have UEFA had to waive the rule? From what I've seen reported they have agreed every one so far. So the rule is the rule - unless you ask for it not to be!

Having looked at the leicester backgroud, I see that De Vries was "mutually consented" on Jan 25th. That being the case, I assume a free agent is not restricted by the 3 clubs rule. The huns should just sack Cousin, pay him off (HA!) and then sell Fulham a squad player in the summer for the Cousin fee.

I would love to think that we could keep Aiden AND the Holy Goalie for many many years. They are well revered at Celtic Park just now, and they would most definitely become heroes in the Henke mode if they hung around. Its players like that that could take us higher still, back to the position a team like Glasgow Celtic should be in. Also if wee Skippy continues to play as he does just now then we have a guaranteed 30 plus per season goalscorer. The future`s bright, and it isn`t orange.
One small request, if I may, can people put a space between the words of whichever csc they happen to be at the end of their posts, Big Joe started it, one doing it is ok but now almost everyone seems to be doing it. I await with breath that is bated.

I’ve no doubt that the time may come when we will have to part company with Artur and maybe Aiden too. I sincerely hope it is not this season’s end and not the following one either.

I think, in my bias, ‘today’, we have one of the best young squads ever assembled at Parkhead. I’d love two, maybe three more seasons, to see where they might take us.

Another European Final… why not? Why the hell not? They just might have it and another couple of years will tell. And if they don’t make it, oh what fun, what heart thumping, throat cramping fun, we will have… trying.

After that - Artur’s value would be cosmic… 90,000 Million Sterling beer vouchers in Scottish Newspaper terms; and Young Aiden, Young Aiden would still be… Young Aiden. He’d be 24. If he stayed another year 25.

The world might very well be there for his taking.

But Aiden, at 21… fear is their key; those that will will us harm, will will him gone.

Not for his own good, not for the good of his career... but for theirs.

Establishment Leeches. I hate them trying to talk our employees out.

When they go after a few celebrations I'll will them well.

    Good afternoon bhoys n ghirls.

I dont see what the fuss is all about.

we all KNOW exactly what WGS will do.
    So do Barca.

We will play the same as we did against Milan.

5 in midfield one up front with a designated support player.

Naka did in the san siro this time last year....

robson can play on the right.

    my team would be.

    Holy Goalie

    Caddis
    Caldo
    Mick
    Naylor

    Robson
    Hartley
    Donati
    Naka
    Aideniho

    Skippy

although i think WGS will favour caldwell on the right, and bringin in either elvis or bobo (sky saying he is injured though).

might use a different support player, but those 5 (for me) will start on Wed.

Jan has been in for, but i think we will be lookin for pace, and if we see any subs upfront, it will be Samaras coming on.

maybe he will surprise us all and play with 2.

    But i doubt it.

I don't fear Aiden leaving in the near future, he must stay for another 3 seasons at least. He has listened to all the advice given to him from the club so far which has helped him to where he is now so I hope it won't change.

If Aiden continues to perform and develop along the same lines as this season and chooses to leave the club at 25 then so be it and good luck to him. However, I would certainly like to think that he would be moving to one of the top 8 clubs in Europe, a Real, a Barca, a Manu, and not a EPL also-ran, quite simply, he is better than that.

And I have to laugh at rumours he would fetch £10m at the moment! You have to love the biased press in this country. Aiden McGeady is one of the most talented young players around at the moment in European football and his Champions League performances show that. Nani and Anderson went for a combined sum of over £30m I believe? Both talented youngsters and not exactly playing in the top league in the world at the time in Portugal so I would like these £10m rumour mongers to talk me through their calculations.

I would definitely side with playing Caddis on Wednesday. Good performance against Killie and although Barca will be a different kettle of fish I go with the round pegs for round holes argument.

Although I do think leaving Hartley out of the team altogether would be a big mistake....

Thom The Tim - Not that I particularly want to defend Nacho "Nae Caps" Novo, but I couldn't see anything particularly wrong with the Ibrox Chihuahua's comments.

The inflammatory headline and false spin that his interview with a Spanish newspaper amounted to handing a "dossier" to Barcelona that would "be a valuable addition to their pre-match build-up" shows why Scottish sporting hacks are regarded with such widespread contempt.

According to his quoted remarks, he gave a reasonable assessment of Celtic, showing a fair amount of respect for our team in the process. I don't imagine any of it will have come as a surprise to Barca.

Following Nacho Novo’s scurrilous betrayal of Scottish Football’s solidarity in the face of the European threat to Celtic’s potential dominance of the Champions league, word reaches our intrepid ear-to-the-ground investigator of some stirrings, shenanigans, and surreptitious phone-calls and machinations in football grounds in Barcelona and Glasgow.

“Frank, get yer big dutch backside intae ma office right away. Huv ye seen this?”

Rikjaard, still becoming accustomed tae Laporta’s accent, adopted almost 4 years ago in tribute to the cultural influence of Glasgow, its great Celtic team and its even greater supporters, rushed into the hallowed cloister.

Laporta leaned back in his black leather upholstered, buttoned, swivel chair, glamourously bedecked in his new hoops replica top, turned down his well worn original Glen Daly recording of ‘Celtic, Celtic, that’s the team for me’, and pointed at the A4 e-mail lying on top of Lisbon Lion’s mouse mat!

“Ah need a word in yer shell-like Frank. Ah think ye’ve got it a’ wrang! Don’t worry about McGeady, or Donatti, JVoH, 4-4-2, or 4-3-3. Through ma contacts ma spy in the camp o’ stalag Ibrox, has given me the hot aff the press inside diamond gen on whit exactly is comin’ o’er the hill on Wednesday.”

Frank picked up the sheet and read it carefully, slowly, and 4 times as a dawn of enlightenment suddenly broke over the horizon of his clouded mind.

“I find this most difficult to comprehend” he said finally, and looked at the big man who had now risen from his chair and was pacing the genuine Persian carpet bought from the Barras on his last trip to Glasgow’s cultural bazaar.

    Laporta interrupted him.

“Ah’ve telt ye Frank, when yer in here it’s Parliamo Glasgow only. Anyway, it looks like aw that planning’s oot the windae noo. Bit o’ luck mind ye that wee nacho the nyaaf huz come up wae the goods an’ jist in the nick o’ time”.

Frank stared at his boss again. It had been almost 4 years since he had properly understood a single word Laporta had spoken, but the remarkable thing about the Glaswegian dialect was that the words were actually less important than the manner, emphasis, intonation, and accompanying stare with which they were delivered.

He could sense the triumph and sarcasm in ‘bit o’ luck mind ye’, the mockery in ‘Nyaaf’, and the triumph in ‘nick o’ time’, even though it was all double dutch to him!

Frank tried his best to effect a gallus Gorbal’s flourish but succeeded only in given Laporta a stomach aching bent-double fit of the guffaws!

“aw right son, geez a break. You can stick tae whit ye know best. So Whit dae ye think?”

“Well if it is to be believed…..”

Laporta creased again and spat out his Guinness all over the Henrik Larsson stained glass window

“Ugh a’m sorry Frank, but ye dae soud like a big girl’ blouse when ye try the language of the people….go on wae yer take on a’ things tactical”

Frank stared in bemisement, translated Laporta’s demeanour and stifled snigger, and continued…

“Well if it is to be believed it seems that we are up against a team that can tackle in defence, a Japanese playmaker who is quite good, and an aggressive midfielder. They also have a small centre -forward who is quite good and a goalkeeper who is usually good but can make some mistakes. Apparently all the rest are sub-standard…….I’ll have to change all my plans as I was expecting their Custodian to be useless, their defence to be toothless, their midfield to be quiescent, and their centre-forward to be the natural successor to Kenneth Millar”

Frank turned on his heel and left the room with the Laporta’s traditional phrase of good luck ringing in his ears……

    “Frankgerootyatotalgalloot”.

Laporta picked up his Jinky-phone and pressed the direct dial shortcode.

Just over 1300 miles away in the East end of Glasgow, the capital of European sporting excellence and the home of the speshull fish supper, (BTW in an episode of Family Fortunes 100 rangers supporters were asked to name a fish beginning with ‘s’. 98 of them said ‘single’!), the phone at the other end of Laporta’s call rang to the lilting melody of the Handel’s ‘Zadok the Priest’.

“Oh it’s playing my song” Peter Lawell murmured as with a spring in his step and a razor sharp crease in his newly pressed mohair perfectly fitting suit trousers, he checked the caller’s ID, picked up the gleaming handset, and with a flourish and flush of expected success in his voice he greeted his peer on the other end of the line.

“Joan ma auld china, how’z it gauin son? Speak tae yer pal gasmeter and brighten up even mair, ma already sunlit and green-white-and-golden world of financial wizardry”.

“The deed is done an’ big Frank has bit the bait quicker than Jim Traynor efter a free hamburger supper. He’s away noo tae chop’n’change his tactics and all because o’ that brain wave of your’s tae git McGowan the clown tae print that guff frae Nacho Novo. But don’t furgett yer ain side o’ the deal. Peter.”

Peter smiled to himself, picked miniscule speck (he refused to use the word ‘fleck’ when at Celtic Park) off his tie and banished it dismissively and with a tch of disgust out of the window.

“Don’t you bother yer heed aboot that. The plans are afoot and you can take it as signed sealed and delivered that for ensuring Celtic’s passage into the quarter finals of the ECL, the Joab at Celtic Park is yours fur the takin, and I’ve jist checked that the religiously themed mansion in Easterhoose is in walk-in condition.”.

“Aye but don’t furgett the wee matter of the gift fur the missus, Peter” interrupted Joan. “Ah need tae oil the wheels and grease her palm wae that special wee sumthin tae bring a smile tae her eyes, a bounce tae ma step, and a bit o’ passion back tae ma ain life”

“Done and dusted Joan, believe me. I’ve jist been on the blower wae the very man. A craftsman of the first order and the only man ootside o’ St Petersburg who is officially certificated and qualified to personally design, manufacture and lovingly personalise a unique Faberge egg as a tribute to yer better half. That should be the very thing ah wid say.”

“Pure magic and dead brill” replied Joan “an aw’ doontae tae that wee unwitting jobby, Novo and his partners in crime in the meja. Life jist get’s better and better. Glasgow here a cum. By the way big man, when ur ye pickin up the egg..”

“As soon as we hing up here Joan, ah’m straight doon Paddy’s Market tae take delivery”

    Laporta sighed!

“Aw ‘Paddy’s Market’, such an atmospheric romantic sounding name for an undoubtedly cosmopolitan magnet for the well-heeled and rich. We’ve got nuthin like that over here, Peter. My Gawd 2 hundred years and we cannae even git that giant ant-hill that Gaudi pretended wis gonnae be a cathedral, finished. See ye after Peter”

“Bye fur noo, Joan the Man” and Peter replaced the handset.

Now just who wis it that Rangers were after now. A wee spoilin bid tae up the ante was always good fur a laugh on a quiet day.

I've read it on here many a time, as soon as one of our players hits form its a stick on the media will speculate on their transfer. They've been at it with the Holy Goalie since he's been in the team, a temporary lull only when he was having that bad patch (e.g. Easter Rd). Naka had been their main target for ages until his form dipped after that summer tournament. "Keegan wants Scott Macdonald" was another one recently, and now all of a sudden its Aiden. BTW, you have to ask what Aiden is thinking about telling journos he would like to play in Spain at some point. Now is not the time Aiden, wait till your form dips, then nobody pays attn. A complete absence of speculation recently re Scott Brown is a worry, loosely interpreted it means they think he is under performing.

The CQN birthday to have this week is tomorrow, when excellent CQN'rs reach the ripe old age of 27!

Anyway, such experience tells me we'll play 2 up front on Wednedsay. The AC Milan game was the most fluid formation of the season however it was in a league context and we were seconds away from an admirable jackpot draw. A result similar on Wednesday would not be very good!

I think our best chance lies in playing 4-4-2 as I don't think we have the players (in midfield or attack) to trouble Barcelona with 1 up top!

Spain may be banned from international competition if their government tries to intervene in the election process of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
Fifa president Sepp Blatter is unhappy with a rule forcing Spain's non-Olympic sporting federations to hold elections before the Beijing Games.

"Spain would not be able to play at Euro 2008 and their clubs wouldn't continue in Europe," he said.

"A confrontation like this is no good for football or for the government."

Greece escaped a lengthy ban from international competition prior to the 2002 World Cup because of their government's involvement in footballing matters.

I am going to stick my head above the parapit here.

Was good to see Mc Manus not taking any of Boruc´s petulance at the weekend. I think the Holy Goalie has to learn a wee bit about humility especially within the Celtic sqaud. I think he´s letting his growing reputation get the better of him. This is bad for team harmony.

I think he is a superb goalkeeper but he´s not the best we have had. For me he is yet to surpass Packie Bonner. Who could still learn him a thing or two about commanding the whole box and collecting crosses. I dont think he has improved upon this since he has been with us. The line about our full backs being too small has been trotted out and hidden this weakness for far too long. How big Danny Mc Grain was I´m sure Packie could tell ye.

He is the best shot stopper I have ever seen playing for Celtic of that there can be no doubt and he has kept us in many games. He has made MASSIVE mistakes this season mainly due to a lack of concentration. If we got a good price for him this summer I wouldn´t be unduly perturbed by taking it. The writing is on the cards that he will be offski. AC Milan struggling to even get a fit keeper for this weeks CL clash.

Artur Boruc owes Rab Douglas and Johnathon Gould a heck of a lot for his growing reputation imho. No man is bigger than the club.

    Hail Hail

I'm personally a fan of seeing Boruc and Mick argueing about that poor kick out. I don't think it is bad for team spirit, but actually shows fierce competetiveness amongst the team and a desire to win. WGS will not be complaining about it either, especially since they both seemed to have forgotten about it after the game. What happens on the pitch, stays on the pitch! It's the only way to play.

MADRID, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Spain will be barred from competing in international competitions if their government continues to pressure the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to hold an early election, FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said.

'If the Spanish government, through their Sports Council (CSD), continue to interfere in footballing affairs they will have to recognise that their clubs and national team will be excluded from international tournaments,' Blatter was quoted as saying in Spanish media on Monday.

'It would be tough, but it would only take six hours to call a FIFA emergency committee meeting to hear and decide upon Spain's exclusion.

'Spain would not be able to play at Euro 2008, and their clubs wouldn't continue in the Champions League or UEFA Cup.'

Blatter's backing for RFEF president Angel Maria Villar comes after the CSD called for all sporting federations not involved in the Olympic Games to hold elections before Beijing 2008, which takes place in August.

'It (government intervention in football affairs) is not a new problem for FIFA,' he added. 'It first occurred in Portugal where a letter from us was sufficient to change the law governing sport.

'In Greece, we had to suspend their federation indefinitely and everything was sorted out in 48 hours.

'We don't have a crisis situation at present. The RFEF have called a general assembly to ratify FIFA's new electoral code and to call an election at the end of the year. We have a small fire but we don't need the firefighters yet.

'FIFA is like the United Nations but has more members and is more powerful.'

    Hail Hail

The team that WGS will put out on Wednesday will be.

    Holy Goalie

    GC, O'Dea, Mick, Naylor

    Naka, Hartley, Donati, Aideninhio

    Skippy, JVOH

The Team I would like to see him put out.

    Holy Goalie

    Young Caddis, GC, Mick, Naylor

    Naka, Robson, Donati, Aidenhio

    JVH, Skippy

I don't think WGS will go with a lone striker at home as both strikers are in form and it will be a tough decision to make on who do you drop. He will bring in O'Dea as he has had some european experience, the same with Hartley instead of Robson, by leaving Robson on the bench it gives him options in the midfield if Aiden or Naka pick up an injury.

Either team selection will win on Wednesday thus continuing proving my formula is worthy of a Nobel Prize ((X+Y)x(E = mc2)/Z x Q = 2008 CL Champions)

Had a good laugh a Graham Spiers column this morning when he was writing about Celtic's profits for the first half of the season.

"I wasn’t half chuckling at the weekend when Celtic’s figures were being heralded. Over in Edinburgh, within the plush offices of Charlotte Square, did I detect some familiar miffed noises emanating from Sir David Murray, he of the giant moonbeams?"

I love the line "he of the giant moonbeams" that and when he coined "Winnalot Journalism" should win him a 'Pulitzer Prize' for journalism.

    ANNAOAN

I have to disagree with you when you said that "he is yet to surpass Packie Bonner". In my opinion the Holy Goalie is better than big Packie, he is not quite as good as Ronnie Simpson but he is getting there. All I know is anytime I watched Big Packie play I always had a sense of dread just waiting to happen, I always felt that in nearly every game he was always going to make one mistake. I don't get that sense of apprehension with the Holy Goalie (might be old age or the alcohol), I know Artur is prone to the odd mistake like any other goalie but I can only think of the Hibs game where he actually cost us.

Anyway I am sure you will agree with me that he is the most entertaining and insane goalie Celtic ever had.

Stand up for the Holy Goalie

No I am not having a go at Boruc´s inability to hold his own hand up in front of 60,000 when he makes yet another howler. Thats his obvious weakness but his penchant for trying to pass the blame onto someone else. That´s just plain pitiful.

What I am saying is that he´s a great shot stopper but far from being the finished article when it comes to crosses and being commanding in his area.

A more commanding keeper and the general perceptions about Caldwell and Mc Manus not being commanding enough in their own area would not be so convincing.

BBC Scotland wouldn´t need to go to the length of making a documentary for Arturs mistakes. The Hibs game would suffice.

I´ll even go as far to say that Gould and Douglas had better levels of concentration than Artur. This is because Arturs is better than the both of them no doubt about it. It is not an excuse however for a lack of concentration.

On Packie Bonner, all I ever remember, as hoopsididitagain pointed out, was palming shots out into the middle of the six-yard box for the opposition to score!

Nah seriously he was the 2nd best keeper I've seen at Parkhead. To think Macari gave him a free transfer for Marshall and Muggleton. Good to see the first thing Tommy Burns did when he took over was sign Packie again. Pity he never got Shay Given before he went to Blackburn as well. If we thought MON had a blind spot with keepers, what about Luigi Macari?

I cannot wait for wednesday, I felt like just sitting in my seat at the end of the Hearts match and not moving before Wednesday! I would have thought that Hartley would have been the choice for centre-mid with the experience of playing a holding role allowing Donati to get forward. I would be very surprised if Robson was in there and not Hartley but hey, that's why Gordon Strachan gets paid the big bucks. We just have to trust his judgement!

I apologise for this long cut-and-paste job but I see Laporta has been very complimentary towards us in an interview:

‘The Celtic supporters are fantastic, in fact the best travelling supporters in the world, as we have seen many times. We can assure Celtic supporters that they will receive a very warm welcome when they visit the city. I know that Celtic supporters are extremely passionate about their club, a club which I believe, like FC Barcelona, is different. We know that supporters will travel in huge numbers to follow their team, but we also know the great reputation of good behaviour which Celtic fans enjoy and clearly we are looking forward to hosting the Celtic fans in the city once again. I know that the city council, the police, Celtic FC and FC Barcelona have been working very closely over a number of weeks to ensure that Celtic’s visit will again be a great success. There will be special arrangements made in the city to ensure that we do all we can to ensure this is the case. We hope all Celtic supporters enjoy their visit to Barcelona.’

    On visiting Celtic park:

‘It will be a real pleasure to visit Celtic Park and feel the atmosphere of a great UEFA Champions League night at such a great venue. We have very much enjoyed our previous visits to Celtic and I am sure we will do so again. In recent years we have developed an excellent relationship with Celtic, something which we hope to continue.’

Maybe it's my memory failing me but I remember no such comments before playing some other Scottish team they recently played!

    2 more sleeps until Wednesday!

I don't see it being given much of an airing, unless they feel they can't ignore it. I thought his comment on Celtic being 'different' line Barca is interesting. To be fair though, Senor Laporta has never had anything but kind words to say regarding celtic. I think the way we dealt with the game on the night of the Madrid bombings and the respect the fans gave the occasion has left a lasting impression on him.

I saw this on the ITV site. The headline was that McGeady sets his sights on La Liga, not that McGeady is perfectly happy at Celtic. At least if he intends to go to Spain, he won't be tempted to sign for Rangers as back up to Chris Burke

"Celtic winger Aiden McGeady has revealed his desire to play in Spain at some stage in his football career.

The Republic of Ireland international is contracted to the Glasgow giants until 2011 and has been in exceptional form this season but admits his ambitions lie beyond Scottish football.

Speaking ahead of Barcelona's visit in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, the 21-year-old told The Herald: "I think later in my career [I would like to play in Spain].

"I am very happy at Celtic just now. Every player has aspirations to play in the best league.

"The top four in the English Premier League are top quality but La Liga is so competitive, anybody can beat anyone else. You sometimes see the bottom teams beating the top ones, which doesn't happen in most leagues.

"You have the top teams such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia and Villarreal but outside of that there are plenty of good teams as well."

    Monday evening rant

I see the laptop loyal are punting Celtic players out again before a big game. They are also starting to promote Cuellar 'Deville' as player of the year. They just don't want Aideninhio to win Player of the Year. They just can't get over him choosing Ireland over Scotland, any outstanding perfomance by Aideninhio is always followed by a dig or they raise the issue with the new Scotland, it's history get over it. I mean I'm disaapointed he is not playing for Scotland but it is his choice so you got to respect it.

I also believe there is an agenda against by certain laptop loyal members against JVOH and Donati, especially 'Bonkers' Keevins, Scoop Guidi and Darryl 'God save the King'. When they praise Celtic players like Samaras and Hartley they always have an extra add-on dig at JVH and Donati. In Donati's case I would say it is almost Libelous, hopefully Massimo has some connections with the Costra Nostra and Bonkers wakes up with a Horses Head in his bed.

It is good to see Mike 'Yellow Card for the Bhoys' McCurry campaign is gathering steam. If we keep it out in the open then maybe we can prevent him being appointed for any of our remaining games against the huns. I see McCurry is 44years old, does anybody know the age limit for MIB, is this McCurry last year and he is doing the grand farewell tour of lodges in Scotland (doing a Tait I think it is called). When he retires he then goes on the after-dinner circuit at all the Orc Supporters Clubs, speaking of after-dinner speaking and supporters club, has a MIB ever spoke at a CSC?

Packie Bonnar aka Dracula as he was scared of crosses and Cinderella as he never went to the ball IMHO was a better keeper for the Free State than he was for Celtic.

Ronnie Simpson is the best Celtic keeper I've seen and the next one is Frank Haffey who made 201 appearances for the 'tic with 61 clean-sheets.

The keeper with the best record against the huns though is Dennis Connachan, think he was unbeaten.

Just seen this on news now, anyone know if there is any truth in it?

Celtic have swooped to land highly - rated Romanian kid Richard Filaret in a £125,000 deal .The 17-year old Atletico Arad midfielder was on trial at parkhead in december , along with team-mate George Tucadean. And Filaret has done enough to earn a five - year deal with the hoops , which will earn him £400 a week, according to reports in the Rommanian media. Filartet ia a member of Romanias under-19 team and is rated as a top prospect.Italian giants Saampdoria were also desperate to land Filaret, but he has opted to move to Glasgow.Hearts beat off celtic last year to land Dumitri Copil from the same club .

NOT the Dr John Reid Interview.

Paul sounded slightly desperate on his call.
“Slabbery Wummin just called. Estadio is leading an industrial strength “shut in” of Guinness Record Book proportions at Sharkey’s with Pablo and the Polish contingent. Today, he was scheduled to interview Donald C. McIntyre, the Rangers Finance Director, in an attempt to provide a balanced financial perspective on the blog. I had to pull in a few favours to schedule this and I don’t want my contacts to feel I have let them down.”
Paul asked if I could substitute for the literary legend.
I was obviously very reluctant. Apart from the fact that Estadio is a proverbial wordsmith, I have been blessed with the map of Dublin on my face, Donegal in my name and disdain in my heart, and I did not relish the prospect of playing Daniel in the Darnel’s Den.
However, Paul quickly calmed my fears and his parting shot of “Fifty pence a word, and a steak pie from my Dad at Christmas and New Year” finally clinched the deal.

So with the thought of at least a 500 word bonus to fill my pocket, I set off for Copland Road on the Clockwork Orange, fortified by the loan of Winning Gemmel’s green Opus Dei scapular over my head, a small flask of holy Wishae Water from the Teser in my hip pocket and a well leaved copy of the “Guide to Superfluous Adjectives” in my laptop bag.

At the entrance to the famous façade, I was met by a gaunt but dignified doorman, dapperly dressed in spotless white gloves and a royal blue blazer, which scarcely concealed a gleaming sash and frilled apron decorated by a compass and set square symbol. As I followed him through the cold marble halls I couldn’t help but wonder why his trouser leg was turned up to reveal a shapely ankle and a hairy but disturbingly provocative lower calf.

My guide showed me through a number of oak paneled doors, into a room decorated with a pentagram carved on the floor. My initial fears began to return as I recalled the rumour circulating in Babbity Bowser’s last Saturday, that Follow Follow had tracked Noel90’s ISP address, kidnapped him to a secret lair and removed his typing finger, leaving him unable to post on CQN. However, my fears were unfounded as my guide pushed open a secret panel and showed me into a well lit, opulent dining room. Sitting on the end of a gleaming mahogany table was none other than a smiling, bespectacled Mr. McIntyre who gestured me to join him for breakfast.

Pressing an obolus into the horny hand of my grim faced guide, I hastened around the table and exchanged a hearty handshake with the man behind the most creative department of the Murray Empire. He motioned me to help myself to breakfast from the banquet and we exchanged small chat over rashers of Ayrshire bacon, Belfast sausage and Free Rangers eggs, washed down by copious helpings of orange juice.
I mentioned that it was not of the succulent lamb quality famously enjoyed by a certain Mr. Traynor. He nodded agreement, affirming that they had cut back on more lavish outlays due to staff members’ Lenten observances.

Comparing Celtic’s recent profit announcement with that of Rangers, I ventured the opinion that they were in danger of falling far behind Celtic in the financial stakes.
Almost spluttering in his orange juice, McIntyre contended that the media spin from Celtic was covering the real facts and was designed to delude the financial neophytes amongst the press and Celtic support.
“What we have in these results is an attempt to cover up a crisis of cracked crest proportions” said Donald with a sparkle in his eye as he warmed to the thought of ledgers, balance sheets and gearing ratios.
“Dr. Reid and Brian Quinn have presided over a significant revenue and profits fall and have sought to explain it away as a virtue.
“Unlike Celtic, Rangers have not announced a drop in revenues, and we are certainly not about to announce a decline in profits.”
“What about the comparative activity in the recent transfer window?”
“Well,” ventured Mr. McIntyre, launching into what seemed to be a prepared position inscribed on the moonbeam decorated manila manuscript to which he referred from time to time. “If you examine the position carefully you will see that we not only strengthened our first team pool, but have also come out ahead in both a football and a financial sense. We maintained our advantage in the SPL, and are still strongly favoured to sustain our run in Europe following last week’s game at Ibrox.”
“With the Hutton and Cousin transfers we have raised the headroom in our banking facility by at least 16 million pounds.”
“How do you reach that figure, when the reported transfer figures don’t exceed 12 million?”
“Well when you factor the wages we have saved on the two players, their personal employment overheads and the avoidance of charges against the amortised value over the period of their contracts, the projected figure could easily exceed 16 million. We have people working on various “what if” scenarios as we speak, and initial feedback from the models look very promising. I am sure our audited results, when they are released, will reflect at least that figure. That will improve our banking facilities and underline the success of the financial policies we have initiated under Sir David’s expert guidance.”

“After the French fiasco, Sir David, consulted with the remaining fan and it was decided that we should return to a traditional Rangers style of play. It was what was demanded and we delivered the Cardigan to implement the master plan. Consequently, we are playing and achieving results today in the age old Rangers style and our fans are returning in droves to see how we won in their fathers’ days.
“We are not Celtic and do not have to buy over priced players in the open market to be successful. We have players all over the SPL, who are anxious to join us and determined to add to our success. We have backed this up with recent investments off the field, which will help maintain our four point advantage at the top of the SPL.”

I raised my eyebrows questioning the extent and type of off field investment.
Mr. McIntyre refused to be drawn on the exact amounts or nature of these investments, but spoke warmly of the structure of the SFA, the make up of the referees’ committee and the desire of Rangers Football Club Charitable Trust to ensure football officials are cared for and are not financially disadvantaged when forced to retire from the game they love.

Interrupted by a call from Craven Cottage concerning a large cheque, Mr. McIntyre hurriedly brought our meeting to a conclusion, thanking me for my visit and requesting a transcript of my article prior to publishing, as per Rangers’ normal practise.

Making my way out, I nodded to an attentive Derek Johnstone and Hugh Keevins as they sat on the marble staircase receiving a briefing at the feet of a sun tanned Martin Bain. My head spinning with confusion, I sat on the Subway, vowing to join Estadio for some brandy vodka and a review of my notes to see if he could make sense of them before sending my invoice to Paul.

‘GG at over twelve hundred confused and bloated words. Can the blog afford it?

Controversial I know but I am arguing Evander Sno's case for inclusion in the starting XI for Wednesday. A cool head will be required for the game. One of the reasons Sno has a tendency to lose the ball is the inability of the front players to create space and/or movement (see Saturday during the latter period of the first half). But Sno's inclusion is dependent upon Samaras playing. I would also play Donati.

No doubt this would be a gamble but I reckon that Barca would be flumoxed by a football playing Celtic team. The argiebargy approach offered by Brown and (having seen him on Saturday) Robson, will I fear only result in freekicks outside our penalty box and the risk of yellow/red cards.

Of course, such a strategy would require the suits and the uncultured (or a combination) to provide young Evander will their full support and backing from the outset. Would that be asking too much ? Perhaps !

I see Player of the Year is almost sorted. It was Hutton, and there is still support for him. One journalist in The Sunday Herald asked why he, Hutton, should not be considered. After all, he opined, the player did so well he obtained a £9m move to England.
But according to both the Evening Times and The Herald today, you can put your money on Carlos Cuellar, who has scarcely put a foot wrong since October, and has been responsible for 8 shut-outs over the past weeks.
Forget MacDonald and McGeady. Cuellar's the man!

Apologies if this has been posted earlier. A couple of comments from Deco, from the UEFA website. The first one shows that they regarded beating us at CP as quite an achievement:

"We played them (Celtic) in 2004/05 and we were the first team to beat them in Glasgow in a Champions League match."

"Celtic supporters are the best in Europe alongside Liverpool fans. They are really noisy and you end up listening to them. Once a game starts, footballers tend to ignore the noise. But it helps a lot to motivate their team. What they do is marvellous."

The best thing here is that he was talking to a Portuguese journalist as opposed to telling a Scottish hack what he wanted (or, more likely, didn't want) to hear.

Most golf balls on sale today have about 300 - 450 dimples. There were a few balls having over 500 dimples before. The record holder was a ball with 1,070 dimples -- 414 larger ones (in four different sizes) and 656 pinhead-sized ones. All brands of balls, except one, have even-numbered dimples. The only odd-numbered ball on the market is a ball with 333 dimples, called the Srixon AD333

List of Celts who never quite made it to paradise.

    Billy Bremner
    Eddie and Frank Gray
    Joe Jordan
    Arthur Graham
    Alan Brazil
    Jim Holton
    Willie Donachie
    Tommy Craig
    Martin O'Neill
    Tony Fitzpatrick
    Pat Nevin
    Steve Clarke
    Joe McLaughlin
    Jimmy Smith
    Tony Green

*Widnae include MON in there as he was a Sunderland fan growing up.

As for Pat Nevin, Steve Clarke and Joe McLaughlin, might be wrong here but I believe that when we were sitting at the top of the League early 1987 Davie Hay went to the board and asked for funds to sign all three and we would win the League, he was turned down and the huns triumphed.

Oh what could have been if we had won instead, the beast might never have survived, since it was he who brought steptoe tae the pox then Scottish football may never have seen the decline that it did unless Ayr United made it to the Premier League and the current Toronto Director of Football, he's no the coach any longer, may never have signed for them.

Desmond Scheidt's frugality caused us a lot of grief.

    Quite an impressive list.

Jimmy Smith did at least come on loan in 1975 however his knee was gone by that time and unfortunately his career was over.

What a Celt he would have been.

Two more for the list, a couple of Celtic daft Gorbals bhoys, Frank McLintock and Jim McCalliog.

I saw Jimmy Smith playing a reserve game at Celtic Park but, as you say, his knee was not up to it by that time. He still looked the part though.
Another injury disappointment around that time was Stevie Murray having to retire. I always thought he was a great midfield player.

    St.Ant
I think it was a wind up right enough. I saw him come on as sub sub for Arsenal in the cup final and blessed himself as he came on the park. WG would no doubt confirm this.
Frank Skinner said on his TV show that when him and his brothers saw that they started to support Arsenal in that game.

    Evening all,

    Blogger GG,
    Brilliant.

    Everyone/anyone?
Did you hear Traynor on Radio Scotland this evening. I had to switch off after about 2 minutes. He is obviously on a one man crusade to drive Aiden out of Scotland. Ragtag. I know there is no point complaining to the powers that be in Scotland. Is there any possiblity of complaining to the main BBC? His venom was disgusting to listen to. Let's hope we win at the league a canter and Aiden just gets better and better.

Strangely, I don't feel any anxiety about Wednesday. I know we are going to win.

Oh, Roddy Forsyth admitted to Traynor that Celtic Park is a special place on European nights. Traynor tried to get him to backtrack by asking if it is better than Ibrox. Forsyth stuck to his cards, only equivocating by saying that Ibrox wasn't too bad either. If Clyde is worse than BBC Scotland it must be appalling.

Sorry, everyone. Got carried away there. I don't mind critisism of Celtic (there's planty of that on here) BUT blatant hatred makes me angry.

I remember Jimmy Smith playing that reserve game at Celtic Park.

Probably his only game in the hoops.

According to the records he joined on loan from Newcastle on 3 March 1975 and had to leave (due to his knee problem)just 20 days later.

I agree about Stevie Murray, one of those players who should have been at Celtic Park years before.

It's sad to reflect on the players "lost" in one way or another, to the club in the 70's.

Lou Macari, George Connelly, David Hay, Stevie Murray and of course (in my opinion) the greatest modern day Celt, Kenny Dalglish.

I do still watch Celtic and worry about the outcome a lot more now than I did then. Dont know if it is an age thing or a comment on the quality of the SPL but I remember the 60s and 70s better than a lot of the recent games.

What a player Paddy was. His transfer to Manchester caused me some grief at the time. I think it was close season '63 or thereabouts.
Mind you that didn't stop me from giving him, Charlton, Foulkes, Best, Stiles and others a good roasting when we met them at CP in a sunny pre season friendly around July 1966.
We ran them off the park and won either 4 or 5-1.
It was a portent of things to come.

The positive aspect of Crerand's departure was that it left a slot which Bobby Murdoch filled with great grace and grit.

Both Pat Stanton and Alfie Conn picked up serious injuries in that opening game of the 1977/1978 season.

As mentioned earlier, Pat never wore the hoops again.

Alfie Conn missed 3 months of the season.

Danny played his last game v Hibs at Celtic Park in October '77 and never played in the first team again until January 1979, in a friendly.

    Pablo...

Coincidentally as we are looking back to the late 70's.

We played them in the League Cup semi final at Hampden in December '78, losing 3-2 AET thus stopping our remarkable run of 14 successive appearances in the final.

You may recall that the winter (of discontent)in 78/79 was particularly harsh and the New Year's game was cancelled at Celtic Park.

It would later become the 4-2 game of course!

We therefore played them twice in May '79, 5 months after the previous meeting.

    sir j.stein...

It's all about opinions of course.

However Kenny is the greatest Celtic player I have ever seen.

Edward Patrick "Eddie" Kelly (born February 7, 1951 in Glasgow) is a Scottish former football player.

Kelly played for local side Possilpark, before moving south to join English club Arsenal as an apprentice in July 1966; he turned professional 18 months later.

Stevie Murray was the school captain when I was at St pats, he also played in the same school team as my late brother although a year or so younger.

He was signed by Dundee when at St Pats and the story then was his da and Bob Shankly had been in the forces together.

We coveted him for a long time but as I've said here before, similar with our trying to buy WGS, Dundee were NOT a selling club tae the 'tic so we got him via the sheep.

    A verr very cultured player.

Brain McLaughlin actually replaced Jinky at the stat of the 73/74 season, the same season we signed Stevie Murray, the Big Mhan was salivating at the prospect of teaming him up with Kenny in the midfield.

Big McVie didnae even get a warning fae the MITB for that tackle which his manager former hun stan anderson said was the worse tackle he had ever seen, he was over here a few years back and said only the skin kepy his leg together, durrant's tackle by Neol Simpson was a tickle compared to what happened tae him.

There was also another protege that we stole fae Clougie's Forrest called Stevie Murray who was also lost tae the gemme early doors.

And Gordon's right; Following the Celts in the 60's and 70's was the best of times.

One more that did wear the Hoops but only on trial, Ronnie Moran who Big Billy seemingly let slip through his fingers.

The night of the 3-2 reverse. Johnny Doyle scored for Celtic and Rangers got a dodgy penalty to bring them back into the game. Tommy Burns was sent off for protesting that the foul was outside the box or a dive or both.
The ref was Hugh Alexander and he had a deadful game. He then refereed the Saturday game at Cappielow when he gave a couple of howlers against us again. It was the first time I can remember the crowd chanting "cheat" at a referee.

The 'Gers love a bit of tenuous marketing - remember Oranje day? - When i saw the 'more than a club' guff on the ibrox terraces i couldnt help but be cynical...discuss

He is Rangers, and if he gets injured… Rangers have one major problem. I, on the other hand, would have no problem with that at all.

I’ve noticed that about Ferguson over the years, there does appear to be a bit of a friendship between him and some of the Celtic Players.

I am sure that Wee Gordon will play a very conservative game against Barcelona as he did against Man Utd and AC Millan in recent years. I'm sure we would all agree that all three teams have got better individuals and would all go into ties against the Bhoys as favourites. However if we play it tight and sneak a goal then the pressure will be on Barca at Camp Nou (it has always been Nou Camp since I was a boy) just like the great UEFA Cup night not so long ago. It will be very difficult but with a lot of skill, alot of fight and alot of luck we might just win this. Maybe.

Talking of Alfie Conn as a Celt. One of his earliest games for the Hoops was at Ibrox and I remember being behind the goals when Alfie shot from about 30 yards. The ball was sailing into the top corner when it swerved at the last possible second and came rattling back off the post.

As the Celtic fans roared their approval of a wonderful effort, one man behind us uttered the words: "He meant that."

Thanks for going to the time to keep us up to-date with what is happening re. out youngsters. At this age it's not the result that counts, although to win is good,it is the coaching and managing of our young talent that must be the priority.

I have mentioned a few times on CQN that a blind man could see what has happened to our youngsters since McDowall left. McLaughlan is not the man for the job and I wonder how long it will take for 'the management' to recognise this?

    Keep up the good work.

Puyot is a very hard, physical player with a lot of skill, now playing in a new position at right back and McGeady is................well just Aiden!
It will be worth the admission money alone this battle.

I see a penalty being awarded against Puyol for a foul on Aiden and The Holy Goalie scoring with it (Celtic are 5 up at the time!):>)

Another complaint sent to STV Sport.
Raman may as well get his Rangers Tie on the next couple of nights:

    Subject: STV Sport - Monday 18th Feb 2008 6.20pm

Once again I feel the need to formally complain about the spin put on stories by your sports team staff when reporting on many Celtic items.

I have complained on numerous occasions and the standard has still not been improved.

The top story last night ran with how Eto was gunning for Celtic and how he has scored before and has vowed to do it again, At no stage did Samuel Eto say this, what he said was that they (the Barcelona team) were coming to score.

This is a totally different story. Why lead with the Samuel Eto non story, when Celtic are the home town club playing here. Your attention should be focused on positive Celtic stories before the game.

With regards to your Eto has scored before and he has vowed to do it again story, I would honestly not have been surprised if Raman had said “and lets hope he does it again” as it would have fitted in perfectly with the tone of the article.

The main story of yesterday was totally missed by STV Sport, in that Laporta, the Barca president had stated that the Celtic fans were the best away fans in the world, quite a statement. This was not even mentioned on STV Sport.

Why would you fail to report this item as it was the biggest story of the day and on every other media outlet except STV Sport. This is a blatant attempt to not report positive celtic stories.

It gets better, as when reviewing the goals at the weekend, after showing the 2nd goal, and as the 3rd goal was scored, Raman reported that “and the Hearts defence were posted missing again”

Are you honestly having a laugh? The 3rd goal was a brilliant piece of skill by Andreas Hinkle, beating his man and firing an unstoppable shot into the far corner. Quite how the defence were posted missing when there were 4 Hearts players in the box really is beyond me. The spin on this goal was quite amazing, and almost beyond belief.

Can you please log my complaint and come back to me with the STV Sport Team’s view against these items.

    To summarise:

    1) Eto did NOT say he is coming to score AGAIN against Celtic as you story implied

    2) Why was the Laporta story not reported

    3) Were the team having a laugh when they stated the Hearts defence were posted missing, AGAIN

This blatant disregard to report the facts should not be happening on a major news programme.

I expect a better standard of reporting that what I have witnessed on this occasion, and on many others previously.

I am curious to know how the German, French, Spanish, Dutch, English, now the Italians, select their referee's, if this is done at the same time as the season fixtures are made, is there a transparent model that we could take public and demand the secret society that is scottish football adhere to in future. Unless we can point to a fairer system our protests can be ignored.

The sad thing is that that was the nearest to the truth that will emerge from Edmiston Drive for quite some time.

The problem they have is one that has affected us in the past, in that you never get to the end of a nightmare when it is lived in the confines of a vicious circle.

All that happens is that puncture repair after puncture repair is made while the pedal is pressed to the floor, the bloodless knuckles squeeze ever more tightly on the simulated leather driving wheel sleeve, and the eyes pop out in manic desperation as the bends on the road to oblivion become ever harder to negotiate.

Eventually the tread peels off and the quantum impact of chaos takes over leaving only the smell of burning rubber and skid marks of the destructive collision between anti-matter and a stubborn moonbeam of arrogance. Either that or the speed causes the whole shebang to fly off into an alternate universe where the laws of physics and McCawber’s simple take on happiness and misery no longer apply.

Anyway, it was a great read and I will now forget about them for the moment.

Please return my dictionary of superfluous adjectives as the Slabbery Wummin is feeling neglected by my lack of extravagant oratorical artistry in addressing the timeless and incomparable mystery of her soulful smile, captivating eyes and irresistible crispy bacon!

    Way of topic I know.

Found this game when I was having a wee look back to see who Celtic, out of charity, honoured by playing in their testimonials.

“Celtic v Real Madrid. Blue and White Trophy. September the 10th, I962. I think Real won 3-1 but I’m buggered if I can remember that game.”

I’ve been to quite a few Testimonials’ in my time and I have really enjoyed every single one of them. From Ron Yeats, Butch Wilkins, Lou Macari, etc. etc.

Now though, in this day and age, my mind has been changed.

The more I have been reading the more anti-testimonials I am becoming. I don’t mind playing a testimonial for a player whose career has been cut short by injury.

I don’t mind playing a testimonial if all the proceeds are forwarded to charities.

I do mind playing a testimonial now, when players enjoy Holywood wages, and yet still feel the need to skin the poor punter… one last time.

In what I’ve been reading there seemed to be quite a bit of animosity generated in Celtic’s direction for the amount of testimonials they play in England. Some of our rather, intellectually challenged, southern cousins, are of the mind that Celtic are paid to play these games.

If they are… it is news to me. I always thought they were a burden borne through mutual respect; Nothing more.

My understanding has always been that the player/team requesting Celtic as opponents cover all Celtic’s costs… nothing more. Celtic appears with all their fans as the final curtain call as a favour. Supporters of other teams would do well to remember that.

One last point – I have always thought it is the right thing to do when players, after their testimonials, donate the gate to charity. It would be nice too, if a percentage of that gate found its way back to the needy in Glasgow. I think it would be right, because in general, it is the supporters from Glasgow who subsidise the gate, sometimes more than fifty percent. A wee donation in reciprocal appreciation wouldn’t go amiss.

    Hi Lhads,

I’ve been out of circulation for a while due to commitments, laziness and the mother of all computer crashes, which has robbed me of 4 weeks and half my data.
I’ve managed to read through CQN now and again, and have gone through the emotional whirlwind that this season has thrown up which has brought out the best and the worst of the bloggers on this dear site.

The McCurry saga is nothing new. These days we are simple able to diagnose and compare stats with anyone anywhere at anytime, which is a great thing and keeps us resolute in our support in the face of such cheating, it also reminds us all of whom we are and where our roots belong.
Many years ago after a huns v tic game I remember my grandfather furiously telling an inquisitive hun “it was a penalty”, after we lost.
The referees have always helped rangers. Scottish referees and the Scottish game is run by pro rangers or more to the point anti Celtic minded people. This does not surprise me any more, but I still seethe with a burning desire to have our team and club treated with the respect it commands. Actually I would rather have fairness all round, but since this is not going to happen, the blatant favoritism shown to rangers gives every other team in Scotland a disadvantage of reaching any silverware. This means we, are the only realistic challengers left to rock the huns boat.

With parity of refereeing over my lifetime, we would have had umpteen penalties and the huns would have had precious few. Celtic players unfairly booked or sent off would have resulted in us winning more trophies, cups that were denied us through blatant cheating.
These referees have had rangers in their heart and the endorsement of our media besides hand shakers in the SFA and throughout our society. We had a stiff upper lip and took it on the chin.

    So….., what’s new?

What is going on with Celtic? We are playing beautiful football since the window, and look to have given the Fod the jitters. Do we smell the blood of an Orangeman?

Really looking forward to the Barca game. Once again I want to see a good performance with a positive outcome if poss. It is the coveted 3 in a row which is our goal, getting to Moscow is simply welcome distraction :-)

This must be the lull before the storm. Where has everybody gone? Don’t know what to do with myself, waiting, waiting, and waiting. I’m tired of waiting. Bring Barca on.

In between waiting for news, any news, I just skipped outside for a wee smoke. It’s quiet out there and the silence is conducive to wandering thoughts. The sky is overcast and there are no familiar stars to converse with. Sometimes there are just too many stars and when there are none…it is lonely. With the sky as it is I won’t wallow in my own thoughts. I’ll take them north to the land that heaven gave earth.

I was just thinking and praying for a Celtic WIN tomorrow night; and if we do succeed… I’ll dedicate my wee celebration to those among us whose joy may be attenuated and may not be able to enjoy the moment as much as they deserve to.

In Celtic, and out with, you are in my thoughts. Here’s hoping Celtic can bring us all a smile.

HHBhoy :- I wouldn't go so far as to say you have given us the jitters, I'll admit you are playing well and scoring just now, you are a far more capable team than pre window. (Perhaps that could be a future article by Paul, who stole the pre window Celtic team and replaced them with dopplegangers that are perfect doublen in every way except they can play football)
I'll admit I'm more concerned about the Celtic team just now but like a lot of our fans am still fairly confident that we can maintain our cushion.

Can I make one final point, Rangers fan and Orangeman are not synonyms.

The 1962 match against Real Madrid was in aid of a Jewish charity and was organised by local Jewish businessman Max Benjamin. I can remember after the match marching back to Glasgow city centre with thousands of Celtic fans to the Central Station where there was a celebration dinner. How happy we were to lose with honour to the greatest team in the world at that time.

I was at that Real Madrid game at Celtic Park.

The game was promoted by a Glasgow businessman by the name of Max Benjamin with the proceeds going to assist with a Jewish Charity.

I think it was a Belgian Jewish charity that was the beneficiary.

It was a magnificent night, 70000 odd there and it was the first of the great atmospheric European occasions at Celtic Park.

We didn't play our first home european tie, v valencia, until October that year.

Despite the 3-1 reverse, Celtic did a lap of honour at the end of the game.

Puskas, Gento & Di Stefano on the same pitch as McNeill, Chalmers etc.

Who would have thought that within 5 years of that game the mantle of Champions of Europe had passed over to Celtic.

    Hi Ed ted,

    thanks for your reply.

You know, many times when I have written in the past, and seen other blatantly pro Celtic comments and views, I’ve often thought of you reading such anti rangers letters which pour from this site.
Certainly there is a difference, as you have pointed out, between protestant and orange. It was tongue in cheek, no more than that. I’m sorry to have caused you any offence.
You are such a gentleman; I really should take a look at myself sometimes. I feel though, and I admit it, so abused by referring decisions that go against us, I do tend to go over the top.
Treat me and my Celtic fairly and you’ll see a perfectly level-headed and polite HHBhoy.

Our pre-window team was devastated with defensive injuries, one after another after another. Even Arthur went under the knife.

All the best to you, but not to the Fod whom you adhere to.

DBBIA :- I think it's sad and that we are seeing a club disintegrate before our eyes. I know they have been punching above their weight due to bankrolling by Mr Mileson but I thought they would find their level as a better 1st division team with the odd foray up to the SPL. It does sound though as if the whole admin of the club will need to be overhauled if it's to continue.

Grenta marks the end of Rangers easy run, best they play them now and get it out of the way. After that they have 13 games left none of which will be easy.

Ed- that's right, get your excuses in early !;~@

The key to all this has been the fall-out between Mileson and RAlexander- the club have not recovered from this, and I don't think it has ever been satisfactorily explained. There are the usual rumours about women, drink etc but it looks like they will be going back down as Queens pass them on the way back up.

This is the natural progression for Gretna, a club with no fans and no infrastructure. I for one, will not miss them. The illness to Brooks Mileson aside, the fact that this led to players not being paid is evidence of an unsustainable club. If they stay in business I hope they do a pyramid of 3,2,1,P,1,2,3!!!!

It was a travesty they were ever allowed into the division in the first place.

    Anyway, continuing the birthday theme:

Paddy Crerand (soccer) - Former Manchester United midfielder and part of the 1968 European Cup-winning side, born 1939.

Paddy Johns (rugby union) - Former Ireland captain, born 1968.

Hana Mandlikova (tennis) - Czech former French, US and Australian Open women's singles champion, born 1962.

Socrates (soccer) - Former Brazil player who captained Tele Santana's 1982 World Cup side, born 1954.

Enzo Scifo (soccer) - Belgian legend, born 1966.

Gianluca Zambrotta (soccer) - Barcelona's versatile full-back, a 2006 World Cup winner with Italy, born 1977.

Clinton Morrison (soccer) - Crystal Palace's Republic of Ireland striker, born 1979.

    HHBhoy,
A perfect summation of the status quo in Scottish football.

It was always thus. It is not just about Mc Curry. As I stated in a previous post, he is just the latest in a long line of officials appointed to do the bidding of his masters.

It is like the Lotto draw. All the balls are jostling for position in the drum and one bubbles to the surface. Once it is removed, another swiftly takes it's place.

Therefore, this is not a rogue referee letting his natural bias run amok, but rather a continuation of the story of the SFA, who are responsible for the Referees.

I hope that comes over as a rational explanation.

It may not be 100% accurate to equate RFC with Orangeism, but it is more than accurate to equate RFC with Freemasonry.

And you can take that to the Lodge.

DBBIA, I meant to check out whether Jim McInally had actually been sacked by Morton but they don't sell the Greenock Telegraph in London (I know, I couldn't believe it either). I guess you have answered the question for me.

Ed, I hope you are being premature re the disintegration (i.e. not 'til after the weekend). However, relegation seems to be a foregone conclusion and there must be considerable worry over the owner's health. The supporters, without being mercenary or insensitive, must also wonder if there is a succession plan (and continuing financial backing) if the worst were indeed to befall him.

There are examples in the past of teams that climbed spectacularly and fell even more spectacularly (Swansea, Luton for example) I think Carlisle had a fairly torrid time of it after top league status (DBBIA?)

Anyway, is there a CQN gathering before the game in BBs or elsewhere?

Im sue most of these have been mentioned on here, but seeing them together makes you pwoud. Vewwy Pwoud.

    Barca quotes....

    Xavi

It’s a great honour and gives me a lot of satisfaction to play in a stadium like Celtic Park in front of Celtic's support. My last experiences were incredible. The fans are really passionate but, at the same time, well-behaved, and that makes it a pleasure to play in front of them. I'm looking forward to experiencing that again. The fans never stopped encouraging their team from start to finish. Also, the entire crowd singing as we came out the tunnel. The pitch was in excellent condition and both matches were lively and exciting. It's a very special atmosphere there, very different from any other club. British grounds in general have their very own feel, but at Celtic Park it is particularly special. Henrik Larsson told me many times about his experience with Celtic and what a great club it is

    Puyol

Celtic will be going for a win - but we will too, so it should be a great match. Celtic have been performing well recently and that means something. We must not make the mistake of believing we have the second leg at home to make amends for anything that happens in Glasgow. The feeling over here is they're mentally really strong and that will make it difficult for us.

    Rijkaard

Celtic stands for a football culture and a way of playing that is not common in Britain.

They always place an emphasis on attack, like Arsenal and Manchester United. As a result, I expect a nice match but it complicates things for me. We cannot afford to make a mistake in Glasgow. That means cutting out any errors because we know Celtic are capable of surprising us.

    Laporta

The Celtic supporters are fantastic, in fact the best travelling supporters in the world, as we have seen many times. We hope all Celtic supporters enjoy their visit to Barcelona.

It will be a real pleasure to visit Celtic Park and feel the atmosphere of a great UEFA Champions League night at such a great venue. We have very much enjoyed our previous visits to Celtic and I am sure we will do so again. In recent years we have developed an excellent relationship with Celtic, something which we hope to continue.

    Messi

Aiden McGeady is a fast and skilful winger and someone I rate highly. We will have to be very careful with him because his movement can be special and he has a great ability to appear in goalscoring positions out of the blue. I really like the way he plays football. He is a natural talent, who can create a brilliant piece of play in the blink of an eye and I can assure you our defenders will be paying very close attention to him. He'd be successful anywhere in Europe but I know he likes playing for Celtic so I'm not sure he'd leave

It was incredible: Rangers just did not want to play football. They practiced 'antifootball' from the first minute and I'm just sorry that we couldn't manage the win after creating a good number of chances. Right from the start they went for anti-football and I'm left with a bitter taste in the mouth
It's a pity. They didn't want to play, and we were tired, so obviously the pace slowed down.

This match will be similar to the one we played with Rangers, although Celtic might play a little more advanced on the pitch. I think they are a more attacking side. Celtic will play a little more open and we'll have more space. But we know it will still be adifficult match. I wasn't that surprised when they beat Milan in Glasgow because in Scotland they are very hard to beat. But every game is different so we need to pay attention to every aspect, the same way they will have to pay attention to us.

Hi Thom the tim (from last thread)

I’ve enjoyed myself immensely reading your own slant on Celtic and what not, on this sight.

That’s an interesting analogy you propose, which therefore means we are doomed to endure travesties of justice and try to fight the good fight without a hope in hell of getting a couple of penalties against the Fod . (I still bristle thinking about the Neil Lennon stonewaller at Ibrox the other season).

Agreed the SFA are complicit in managing the appointments, which means the natural Fod adherence of a potential ref would propel him further up the ladder to face us. This said appointed person would then exercise with or without caution his duties, which means he can’t stop himself taking umbrage at anything that moves or speaks in green and white. Therefore I do believe the individual is indeed MORE the perpetrator in this equation, knowing fine well he is backed up by McVicar or anyone else in the ref fraternity. I believe both the individual and the SFA are responsible for being unfair. It’s a chicken and egg thing, in which the eggs should be thrown back in the SFA face.

What do we do? Neutral refs for the Fod encounters? I think WE would welcome this.

What about you Ed ted? Would you have anything against such an event? Remember, gers players would often get a yellow or straight red on their European encounters. Funny that:-)

    HHBhoy

BTW well said Paul, good point about the managers.

    HHBhoy,

Your chicken and egg reference is true. It is a perpetual scene.

Personally, I can go back to the "great" Jack Mowatt and every generation had one who led the way.

As we agree, the SFA are the puppet masters in this scandal and for them to agree to outside appointments for SPL games , would be akin, to continue your fowl analogy, to turkeys writing to Santa.
