Samaras cameo tops great Celtic performance

I told you on Friday that the new arrivals would have several players looking over their shoulders.

Days after Celtic sign two strikers, Scott McDonald and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink both score against top flight opposition for the first time since November. The human psyche is a complex thing; players train and prepare for a game, but they are no-less susceptible to the comforts of the millionaire lifestyle than the rest of us would be; there is nothing like a wee bit pressure to bring performances into focus.

Shunsuke Nakamura helped Paul Caddis easy into his first senior start and they linked to create the opening goal for Scott McDonald. If Andreas Hinkel had played as well as Caddis today we would be delighted with our German international.

Giorgios Samaras stole the headlines with a debut goal remarkably similar to Paulo Di Canio’s memorably debut moment at the same venue in 1996. Samaras mother could have written the script for today; shortly after he replaced Scott McDonald he ran 50 yards and created space for a shot (note for future reference, the ability to run with the ball with pace), before collecting the ball on the right wing, accelerating past the Kilmarnock defence and passing into the corner of the net.

I am trying really hard to avoid making a snap (favourable) judgement of the player.

We lost a bad goal. Danny Invincible was given space to send in a looping cross from the right despite the attention of both Naylor and Donati, and Jamie Hamill managed to find space to get a clear header on goal from 8 yards.

I was really hoping Celtic would continue to add to their run of consecutive clean sheets, but they were rightly punished for a moment of slackness.

The champions and ‘Cup holders are motoring again, but with a whole host of new and injury-recovering talents itching to get started, they look good value to carry off the prizes again.

Terrific performance today, Caddis had a great debut and with a bit of luck we could have been in double figures!

Samaras looks like a class act and if him on the bench can inspire JVOH to that level of performance every week we will be a big threat to every team including Barcelona.

Well done to the Bhoys today, excellent performance thoroughly enjoyed it!

Caddis might get a wee run in the team. Since Hinkel can't play against Barca, Caddis looks like the natural replacement on that form.

We might have seen the last of Killen this season, I think there is a good chance that Hutchinson will be the fourth striker. We have to keep two players under 21 on the bench. And by the reaction of Southgate when Celtic signed him, he must have potential and clearly WGS must rate him since Celtic preferred to pay money to get him early instead of waiting till the summer.

Now I want the games to come thick and fast, happy days here at the CQN.

Tiny Tim's right, Di Canio made his debut against some non-descript Eastern team. I remember thinking, "why the hell did we buy him?"... I'm the same guy who thought Vidar Riseth would be a Celtic legend. Ahem.

Pfayr, do you not think that, rather than the centre halfs, it was Scott Brown letting the midfielder getting a free run into the box that was at fault for the goal?

That wasn't you I was talking to at the game was it? I was talking to a guy during the game and after Samaras' goal I mentioned it to him that the goal was similar to Di Canios, they both picked the ball up almost to the spot and finished the run with a pass into the same corner of the goal, though Di Canios was with a more crowded penalty box if I remember right.

5-star Celtic today in every way. I thought we were tremendous. The improvement from all players who have got competition was remarkable. Maybe that's why Naylor was still so poor as he's still got none!

Very happy chap today and my bhoys enjoyed it too. How does that song go again? Christian Daillys nearly 40...

I’ll do as you advise, and give those I love a hug tonight. Take care, be as strong as you can, and I’ll give you a hug too the next time we meet.

    On subject of dicanio,

Brings back some good memories, like the goal at aberdeen.

However, one of the funny scenarios I recall is as follows...

Couple of years back when we where playing at hampden we bumped into a few of the Dublin bhoys one night, so story goes along like this, whenever celtic where not playing and had a free weekends, for a couple of years we spent alot of time in Dublin when we had those free weekends.

Anyway we find ourselves in one of the popular night clubs, myself and two of the bhoys, celtic may even have been playing a testimonial the same weekend ?

    The complex was buskers/boomerang.

Sunday night scenario out all day..

Around the same time, celtic brought our some cd's and videos, to capiatlise on the four amigo's.

One of them was a CD for Dicanio...

    CD was to the tune of D I S C O

So there we are a few bottles of Cider, the worlds your oyster and all that,

Plenty of nice ladies on dance floor...

Opportunity comes about as guess what, one of the guys just happens to have the CD with him in his jacket...

So the bold bhoy decides to con the DJ...or more like bore him to death....

So the good DJ plays this so called popluar tune that is being played all over the DISCOS in Scotland, aye right !

Anyway, you could not make it up !

    D I C A N I O In the Dublin nightclub !

    Not ONCE, but TWICE

Picture the scene, three of sides splitting with laughter, rolling about

Nice ladies still on dance floor...

Anyway... it was funny at the time !!!

We might not have won anything when the man was with us, but still have the memories...

That story is better than the golden boots !

"Caddis was at the back post were he is no doubt told to be ...not to blame at all IMO"

I think if you watch the replay you'll see that Caddis looks behind him to see if there is any danger from a lurking Kilmarnock player but he misjudges the guy's pace. This left Brown dealing with two incoming players.

Perhaps the centre-halfs were ball watching but as we have all said many times this season, we allow to many crosses into the box in the first place - the root of the problem and the goal we conceded today. However, as I said earlier, to be fair to Naylor he'd just taken a knock and who knows just how much it affected his ability to close down Invincible on the right. It's just a little sad that we conceded because it's always nice to be on a good run of shutouts.

BTW, does anyone know where the total length of this shutout ranks in our club's history. We can't often have played so many minutes of football without conceding a goal. I seem to remember that the flying pig went about 9 or 10 games in the 90's and that was some kind of record for Scottish football.

    Sir Paul

    Didn't see the game.

Tell me this and tell me true... Why do you have to be so talented in providing such a descriptive and concise synopsis o' the game?

I could not avoid knowing the Score-line... but no thanks to you... you have gone and done spoiled the flavor of the dessert,by your crystal clear, summation of the game!

    Very Vexing...

The reason I had for missing today's game is easy to recount.

High Noon in Scotland is.... FOUR A.M. in my domicile!...(I thought ye lived in a Hacienda?...ed)( Sh!
    Loose lips kin sink ships!)

Also, at that time in the morning I was not even abed.

Just about that time... I was somewhere between trying to fill an inside straight.... and making my way tae the ATM Machine to replenish my devastated, Bank-roll!

    Who says... "...?
You should know when to fold 'em...and know when to hold dem?"

Whoever said that.. Dinnae know scratch aboot... Poker...!

In that game Naebody knows Zilch about anything.... it's awe a bunch o' dummies, trying tae gie away their money.... as stupidly and as fast as they can!

I know what I am talkin' aboot!

    Think aboot this...

    Ye goat Ten Players, playing...

But only WAN PLAYER KIN WIN!

    But who am I kiddin'?....

    I just Luv it!

    God Help Me!

As you may have gathered, this missive that I am typing... has not much to say about Soccer!
I am purposely keeping my mind clear on that subject, right up till I view the re-run on Chan67!

    Get it?
    Got it?
    Good!

    Talk ta ya latah!

He seemed interested, it is amazing what a kick up the bum does for some people.

His movement and determination for skippy's second goal is welcomed.

More of this attitude big man..

On Georgie Bhoy, had heard lots of stories from Man City fans, on today's display hopefully this is a new chapter for the big guy.

By default we now appear to have three guys genuinely pushing for two places.

More of this and we will all be happy bhoys and ghirls at the end of the season....

PS Should Celtic not consider sponsoring the scottish cup, seeing that it is our Cup ! Wee Joke !

He was saying our team names very quickly,so i don't know if i misheard him, though my son thought the same as me, & the announcer maybe thought to himself that he could get away with this by being quick.

Macdonald was harshly booked after fouls were given for two challenges that looked shoulder to shoulder to me. Some refs want to make football a non contact sport.

Brown deserved his booking for a bad tackle on a breaking Killie player. That's two yellows for him in the cup, so one more means a suspension.

    Hi Paul67,
I was onto rave about our performance today and hold my hands up and say i think my league prediction was a tad premature and yours could prove to be correct..
After reading the tragic news re Dick Byrne it doesnt seem that important now.
Have an 18 yr old son myself and almost lost my daughter years ago as a child through a serious illness.
I dont know mate you but my heart goes out to you.

    maybe its just me.
but there are a lot of comparisons with di canios first game because of the type of goal and the arena.

but i couldnt help but but think about another debut, a game where everyone in the team stood up to be counted, when we played with flare, speed and style!

    Cadete's debut.
    another 5-1 score line.
    another great performance....

    with one big difference.

Mr Farry wont be holding up and signings in an attempt to stop them facing the filth.
infact, due to the cancellations, all our signings will be available for mare than they should have been.

hittin form at the right time.

why should we be bothered if our new signings dont get a game?
if our current players raise thier game sky high then we win anyway.

but for the first time in a while, we have REAL quality to come off the bench if our strikers aint firing on all cylanders.

    I WAS CONFIDENT BEFORE NOW...

    EVEN MORE SO NOW!
    big up WGS!
you take the stick when it aint goin well.... TAKE A BOOOOW!

What a performance from the Bhoys today!!A rip -roaring display of football played the Celtic way from start to finish - the Killie goalkeeper played a blinder to keep the score down to 5!

Overall an inspiring, and timely, display from the whole team -maybe the new additions have inspired some to "up" their game -I don't know , but whatever it was , I think we'll take that kind of show any day of the week.Stand outs for me were young Caddis at right back - confidence & ability personified and just loved those runs up and down the wing.Jvoh -easily the best I've seen of him ever - & Mc Donald just keeps on knocking them away- If he keeps that up I'm going to have to seriously consider forgiving him for Black Sunday!!

Today's show has cemented for me the feelgood factor coming out of the January window - I just can't wait now for the next game!!

And Walter,(Smith -I think!) - if you're out there- howdya like dem apples !! ( 5 nice green ones!!)

Hail Hail -The Bhoys are back in town!!

Dick Byrne, sure you're not reading this right now. But one day I hope you'll find the time to look back on the CQN posts of the night and know people were thinking of you and your family.

I hope it gives you strength.

Is anybody else worried about how poor Scott Brown has been of late. He was the most expensive player on the park but yet the least effective. Surely WGS has got to have words with him and get him bursting through the middle again. He looks like a player low on confidence and just watch how bad his first touch is!

    Dick Byrne -

    tragic news.

Today is the last whisper of the Christmas Festival of Light, the fortieth day, The Presentation of Our Lord.

I always keep a wee something for tonight.

I have a Panettone I bought in Milan the day of our progress to the Last Sixteen and a bottle of Young's Christmas Pudding ale which is absolutely stunningly flavoursome.

I raise my glass to you, Old Tim and all the recently bereaved. You are cherished in the hearts of all here.

God bless, rest and keep you and yours.

One of those wonderful performances where you hope the 4th official puts up a board signifying '20' minutes of injury time. New signings to create true competition for places aside, Caddis was the main reason for an excellent performance - first-time balls and a right-back playing right-back. The boy is ready and he is able.

A word for Gary Caldwell. He took a remarkable amount of stick from the guy behind me but I thought today was one of his best performances - calm, assured, confident. McManus and Caldwell all the way at CB for me.

And Georgios Samaras. Someone said today 'he looks a player' - understatement of the day. Tall, quick, and can finish - McDonald and JVOH in one.

Don't wish to sound negative on any aspect, and haven't watched any tv, but that was a poor performance again from Brines. The bookings aside 1 foul = 1 booking for us - a red card for the Killie player for going in on Artur?), a Killie player kicks the ball of his own foot in our penalty area and a corner is awarded. Terrible stuff.

Dick Byrne - don't know you, but prayers for you.

The CQN community has had a real lift lately, with the relatively successful conclusion to the transfer window and the resultant improvement in our team's performance today.

Funny how rather insignificant that now seems in comparison to the sense of loss felt by two of our community.
Our thoughts should be with Dick Byrne and Old Tim at this time.

As one of the first to criticise garbage performances I feel I have to praise the team today - maybe we are all going over board a touch because we have been so bad lately - but that was a very very good performance.............................cant wait till the next game!

Only the second away game me an' the bhoy have been to all season . Last one was 5-1 at Love street. Looks like our next one could be in the camp nou (if Motherwell doesn't get played before then ) . SO I'm looking forward to 5-1 in the Camp Nou . then ! ! ! ! !
Best comment I've seen that sums up everything was the one that said today's real Celtic team had replaced the imposters we've been watching recently . Exactly ! !

Dick Byrne - I know nothing can possibly help but my thoughts are with you . Bill Shankly was wrong .

Looking at the comments tonight and comparing to those of last Sunday evening- what a difference in 6 days!

I was confident the the comings and goings at Celtic Park and Death Star during the Jan window would have a massive bearing in the destination of the title, after today I am utterly convinced and there is only going to be one winner!!

Sir David, Walter, Martin, Ally, Kenny- if you are lurking out there, you boys played a blinder!

One of our friends has suffered the most terrible tragedy.

Dick Byrne’s son Christopher, 17, died as a result of a stabbing last Saturday evening.

Whatever must Dick’s family be feeling, if they are able to feel anything at all.

The death of a child must be the ultimate horror for any parent, but the senseless death due to a stabbing, the taking of an innocent life, must be a thousand times worse.

Nothing I can say to Dick and his family will make them feel better, but what I can tell them is that,

Dick, when you weep, I will weep with you,

When you laugh, I will laugh with you,

I will share your sorrow and joy.

Dick, I am certain that that awful dirty St. Joseph will look after Christopher.

“Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord.

And let perpetual light shine upon him

    Forever and ever, Amen.”

    Dick Byrne & Old Tim,

Whenever you get the chance to read through these threads I hope your spirits are raised by the realisation that many, many people who have never met you and do not know you are thinking of you.

Paul67 facilitates a small room in the world where a community comes together to talk football and Celtic. Communities grow over time both in numbers and experiences. We get to share sadness as well as joy.

That's what communities do. If there is one small piece of strength or comfort you can take from the fact the CQN community is thinking of you both just now it will have served a purpose beyond that Paul67 had planned for it I'm sure.

    God bless.

Great to see all 3 strikers score today.

I was going to post last week however blogger refused to publish my comments. It was basically an attack on Sean South and co. Hmmm i wonder what you bunch of tubes think of WGS now? In fact, no I dont because there are some things in life that are more important than football, so I will leave this and rejoice by repeating the words of Martin42, timmy7, TTTT and bloke109.

Just watched the game (didn't see it live because of scummy work!) and was pleased with the performance.

Don't think there was any stand-out player in the team today.

Caddis done really well but I doubt he'd have been chosen for Man of the Match if it hadn't been his full debut.

Samaras looked classy, a quick thinker who plays accurate passes bringing others into the game. Strong enough in the air to win at least his fair share (although this is not his style!) and very comfortable with the ball on the deck. He showed composure every time he was on the ball and I have no doubts that he will be a big star if he puts the effort in.

McGeady had their fullback blow out his...

There was one point where it looked like his face was melting!

Good, comfortable game however it reminded me of a training match at some points - I think we've got another gear or two which is no bad thing if we can find the clutch.
