Scott Brown eases Celtic past Hearts

I know we beat Hearts 5-0 earlier in the season, but yesterday’s 3-0 victory was perhaps Celtic’s best league win of the season.

Scott Brown looks like he is beginning to settle into life at Celtic. It has taken his time to find form, as it has his most regular central midfield partner, Massimo Donati. It is perhaps no coincidence that Donati is also returning to his early season form.

Shunsuke Nakamura and Aiden McGeady are a joy to watch, but you don’t feel either player is under the kind of pressure to lift the team they have been at times this season.

With Brown and Donati passing and prodding, and new-born Vennegoor of Hesselink and McDonald scoring for fun, Aiden and Naka look far more relaxed when they get the ball.

I said on Friday that the Hearts game was the most important of the week, which it was. Aiden and Naka are not the only ones looking more relaxed these days, you and me can look forward to another memorable European night at Celtic Park on Wednesday, knowing that one of Europe’s finest teams will face worthy opponents.

The league is Celtic’s focus, but we can go into the Barcelona game with the confidence that comes from eight consecutive wins.

I was in Rosie O'Grady's and met some of the local's from the Perth C.S.C. (briefly).
I was in the night before the Hib's game. There was an Irish band on.
It was the day that the CL draw was made against Barca.

They were making a big fuss over an ex Aberdeen player who scored against us in a cup final.
He seemed a nice bloke actually.

I watched a rerun of the DU away game in Durty Nellies.

Perth does have a lot of Scottish expat's ,so i was not too surprised with the number of Jungle Jim's over there.

"In the name of the father
    By TOM ENGLISH

THIS is a tale of father and son and it begins at the McGeady family home on the southside of Glasgow and with a video tape that in 10 minutes tells you so much about the making of Aiden McGeady.

It was filmed in the early 1990s when he was eight, when he sat before the camera of aspiring film-maker and friend of his dad's, Malcolm McKissock, and spoke about his life's dream, how he would like to play for Celtic (and then for Liverpool), how he loves John Collins and Pierre van Hooijdonk (because they take great free-kicks) and how great his dad is (because he's there all the time and watches him play).

There is glorious footage of the boy performing on a red dirt track in the Gorbals, a slow motion film of him weaving his way through the traffic of a seven-a-side game for the Govanhill Cubs, a slaloming run and a thing of beauty that finishes with him rolling his foot over the top of the ball to deceive the goalkeeper before calmly passing into an empty goal.

Then there is John, the father. John is on the film, too. But he's not looking to the promise of tomorrow like Aiden. He's thinking about the what-might-have-beens of his past. He's talking about his own time in football, his departure to Sheffield United at 16, his terrible homesickness, his five years as a winger and his injuries that left him with a busted knee-cap and a broken career in his mid-20s. Mostly, he is talking about his father, about the problems they had, about the lack of interest he displayed in John's own football life. When you connect it to the close bond between himself and Aiden, the poignancy and relevance of it is obvious.

From a distance John might appear as another example of a man trying to live his life through the glory of his son's success. No doubt people have said that at some stage but that is not the case. All he's tried to do is steer his boy clear of the problems he himself encountered.

John switches off the video tape and talks about his old man. "Until about five years before his death I never really spent much time with him," he says. "Himself and my mum were raised within a few minutes of each other in Gweedore in County Donegal and my father was a typical product of his generation. He was a tough boy, not given to sentiment. He didn't really take an interest in my football, didn't really understand the game to be honest. Years later I found out that when he was down the pub having a few pints with his mates he'd talk about me, he'd tell the lads how I was getting on. I never knew this. He'd talk about me rather than to me. He was probably no different to many other fathers in those days."

Is it any wonder that John has been there every step of the way for his own boy? Hardly.

The sense of pride in his son's career is huge. Last weekend John visited his mother in Donegal. The family went down to the local hotel to watch Celtic play Aberdeen and they smiled their way through Aiden's performance. He has never played better, Gordon Strachan said as much. This week he will face a bigger and better challenge when Barcelona arrive in Glasgow. Word has it that Aiden is more than a little excited at the prospect.

John tells you they've had some right barneys in this very room we're sitting in. "I'm very honest in assessing his performances. Always have been.

"We go through it after every game and I don't go easy on him because I don't think that's the right thing to do. He's not going to do everything right in every game so what's the point in pretending. Oh, we've had some discussions, put it that way."

Theirs has been a hell of a journey. He tells you all about the interest from down south, the expeditions to the top clubs in England for trial matches, Liam Brady's pursuit of his signature for Arsenal and the disbelieving words of other youth team coaches. There was one time at Everton when a development officer from Goodison Park invited McGeady down for a game, prefacing the invite with some caution. 'Your boy will have to be very good to get a look-in because we've got the best here'.

The guy started talking about an 11-year-old on Everton's books. This kid was special. That day at the trial McGeady played in the same side with a young man that John feels sure was Wayne Rooney. And McGeady excelled, just as he did pretty much everywhere he went.

These were promising days in the young life of John and Elaine McGeady's son but domestically things were tough. A little while before John had hit the wall as regards working on the buildings, the allure of digging holes and laying slabs and pouring concrete having worn off after seven or eight years of that hard life; John was a restless spirit. 'What do you want to do?' Elaine asked. 'I'd love to teach,' John replied. So he did. He went to university and became an English teacher.

"I'm 49 now and I've been teaching for 10 years and I love it. But in the beginning it was hard going financially. We were living in this house and we had a substantial mortgage and kids. Some nights I'd be sitting here with my head in my hands worrying about how we'd survive the following week. A former teammate of mine, Gary Hamson, who is now Aiden's agent, rang me one day and said, 'look, you're entitled to a retraining grant from the PFA, and sure enough I got a cheque in the post for £2,500 and that made a hell of a difference.

"Around this time loads of clubs wanted Aiden but I was determined that he wasn't going to England. I remember what I was like down there at the start and Aiden would have been the same. At such a young age he'd have missed home as much as I had.

"Clubs made offers, not overtly, not a promise of a briefcase full of money but overtures were made from certain places that would have sorted out our financial plight at the time. But that was never going to happen. Just as long as we got by and kept the house we were fine. Aiden was always going to stay in Scotland."

The crunch came on an afternoon in Blackburn. Another day, another trial, another pressure game for the young man. This time McGeady failed to live up to expectation.

'How did I do, dad?' he asked

'Well, you didn't cover yourself in glory, son. You didn't get much of the ball but when you got it you didn't do a lot with it.'

    'Oh.'

The conversation developed. Decision time was at hand. 'Are you happy going to these trials, Aiden?'

'Well, I feel under pressure all the time… '

'I don't think it's fair on you. I think it's too much. Do you know what you want to do.'

'Yes, dad, I want to sign for Celtic.'

The deal was done in a day. Celtic had the player they coveted for years and McGeady had a stable footballing environment he could flourish in. And how he has flourished. It hasn't been a bed of roses for him but he's worked his way through it. There was a time, pretty early in Strachan's new era, when you thought that McGeady was going to be one of his victims, one of those faces that just didn't fit. He was dropped, there was talk of him leaving, there was even more talk of Strachan being especially hard on him and now there is just sweetness and light and glowing tributes from the manager about performances so good that Strachan feels McGeady will be showing the DVDs to his grandchildren in time.

There's been worshipping at Celtic Park but abuse away from it. This is the downside, much of it traced back to his decision to declare his international allegiance to the Republic of Ireland. John remembers a friend phoning and warning him about the possible ramifications.

"Aiden was only 15 at the time but we knew there'd be stick down the line. We just didn't realise how much stick. I mean, to hear your son being called a traitor is a little hard to take.

"To be fair, it was a lot harder a year ago than it is now but those people who abused him that way didn't know the family history. Look at the video again. He's eight and look at the top he's wearing. It's an Ireland top. He absolutely loves Scotland but this thing goes deep. It wasn't him being opportunistic but some people won't believe me when I say that."

Has it bothered Aiden? A little, for sure. But he's got broad shoulders for a young man and has an amount of inner-confidence, "much, much more than I had when I was player," says John. "I got very nervous before games. He doesn't.

"He just revels in it, the same as he did when he was out on the road there doing keepy-uppy with tennis balls and golf balls and annoying the neighbours."

John says he used to go to an upstairs bedroom to see how his boy was doing. Now the view is shared by 60,000 others, all hoping and praying that a little more McGeady magic on Wednesday will lead to another one of those heady, heady Parkhead nights."

    Paul67:

I nailed my colours to the post when we signed him and I stand by what I said then, I think (Henrik Larsson aside… for the moment) that Scot Brown is the best signing we’ve ever made. That is just my opinion and within the confines of that opinion I include Joe McBride, Alfie Conn, Artur Boruc, and my favourite player ever in a Celtic jersey… Bertie Auld.

I really do think he, Scot Brown, has it all. I don’t think he is a headless chicken. Time alone will tell. He has just got to simmer a little bit and let his ability do the talking.

On a separate issue… whatever happened to all those ‘Aiden haters’. Are they now like retired ‘Hells Angels’… cringing in their boots as they slaver over their rice pudding.

On a slightly different topic, you stated that our merchandising was around 15m last year. This obviously dwarfs Rangers guaranteed 4.5m but two questions....Did Rangers make much more than the money promised by JJB for merchandising and secondly, how much of ours came from Japan? In other words, how reliant are we, if at all, on our Japanese star to keep our noses infront of Rangers in terms of merchandising and commercial spin-offs?

Great story about Aiden and his dad.

The young man can mature into a world great.
His attitude when he loses the ball now is brilliant.
In the past it seemed that he was playing for himself.
He is now a team player.

When he clicks ,he is on another planet from those around him.

This has come from an extra yard in pace, improved upper body strength ,and better decision making on when to release the ball.
Allied to his improved work ethic.
The goal's are now more forthcoming also, and he still has several years before he will be at his peak.

His Dad seems like a salt of the earth type of Ghuy.Who has helped Aiden make all the right decisions ,so far.

I would explode if i had to listen to my own daughter being criticised, the way modern players are.

I'm sure Aiden is just as proud of his dad ,as his dad is of him.

Mr Strachan is also due praise for how the Bhoy is being nurtured.

I usually agree with what you say...

BUT I have to say I was disappointed with Scott Brown yesterday - as I have been for most of the season - and have strong doubts about the cohesiveness of our midfield.

Donati is useful in front of the back four but he is not linking up well with Brown.

Easing Robson into Brown's position could be the answer.

Naka is also still leaving us exposed on his flank.

I think a lot of the flak the defense has taken this season is a result of the porousness of our midfiled.

Unless we tighten up we will get well beat by Barcelona, and will struggle for points in the three remaining games against Rangers.

For what its worth, Samaras is outstanding and I would like to see him replace JVOH asap...

Dont mean to be rude, but where you at the game yesterday? Donati was man of the match, he was excellent.

Scott Brown was also excellent, reminded me of Neil Lennon when he first signed for us in the way he helped out our defence.

"Unless we tighten up we will get well beat by Barcelona, and will struggle for points in the three remaining games against Rangers"

We may get beat on Wed, personally I think we will win. But your comment about the hun games is so way off mate, we will skelp them.

As I said earlier about a Celtic "fan" who placed a large bet on the huns to win the league (tell me a true Celtic fan who would do that) I will bet anyone £10 per point between us and the huns come the end of the season. Ill expect to be £100 up at least.

We have the resources to win the league, and I am optimistic we will.

But Scott Brown is not producing the goods, and just because he bothered to show up yesterday - as opposed to other games when he barely features apart from making a few reckless challenges - does not cut it as a Celtic player.

The Hibs team revolved around him, and perhaps that is why adapting to life at a team with quality all over the park is difficult for him. But a bit of bloody elbow grease will greatly help his game.

Donati is good defensively, and he has a good work rate going back. But he and Brown have failed to form a solid partnership leaving our whole centre midfield exposed, and our shape ragged after failed attacks.

I think Robson should definitely have a role in our midfield.

And Bazzabhoy - I would never put money on friggin Rangers to win the league...

    Scoreline flattered them.
Killie did not have a goalscorer today but loads of possession.
Huns defense at times just looked desperate, clearing as high and as far as they could.
Darch goes to ground when you as much as look at him.
Cuellar slow and clumsy but fortunate.
Weir.. well enough said read Cuellar.
Fast flowing football and Samaras up front and we will take a barrel load off this mob.

Decided to have a wee look at the age of our team from yesterday.

Nobody over the age of 29. Not even after three substitutions.

    Interesting fact:-

Two pair of players share the same date of birth - Artur and Massimo who will both be 28 when we play Barcelona on Wednesday and Barry Robson and big Jan who both turned 29 on 7th November.

    Boruc (28 on Wednesday)
    Hinkel (25)
    Caldwell (25)
    McManus (25)
    Naylor (27)
    Nakamura (29)
    Brown (22)
    Donati (28 on Wednesday)
    McGeady (21)
    McDonald (24)
    Venegoor (29)

    Samaras (23 on Thursday)
    Robson (29)
    Hutchinson (19)

From what I've seen of Samaras he could become a bit of a star at Celtic over the next few years if he were to sign permanently, as will McGeady and - despite his patchy form as the main man in midfield - Scott Brown.

Brown has went from being a youngster at Hibs to being the big hope at Celtic, we will see the best of him in the next couple of seasons I'm sure.

With Skippy only 24 things are looking bright for the next couple of years.

This is a crucial season - if we can get 3 in a row I am certain this club will go on and make it 5 or 6.

    GO GET IT BHOYS.

Perhaps you and I have been watching games through different lenses.Scott Brown has centred a team who have scored 13 goals in 3 games. Our resurgence in form has coincided with Naka,s return yet you see weaknesses? Also our struggles after a good start to season when Brown was moved to wing when Naka was injured. To blame midfield for defense is a joke.
All season long i have complained about defence backing up to early and not getting forward to compress the space. They create most of their own problems.

Terry O as usual well said and keep up the good work, although I thought on this occasion Keevins drew you in with his "cutting to the chase" question.

In my humble opinion, you should have put it back to them, by asking why a referee who continuously "misses" important decisions like McCurry does and the facts speak for themselves, continues to get high profile games and hasn’t been dealt with by the SFA?

He stated several facts about McCurrys booking campain.

Apparently there were several bookable offences in the game today that went without a card. I dont know about them, I dont watch anti-football.
Facts were also stated about various other bookings this season.

Fraser Wishart now saying that McCurry should get serious and ask his legal team to ask for a transcript from Terrys call, unreal.

They ended up saying they dont want any more calls on McCurry.

A wee snippet I came across elsewhere.

''When Mike McCurry blows his whistle at Rugby Park on Sunday he will have completed his sixth Rangers game of the season, more than double that of any other referee. That's not the interesting fact, although you may think that is interesting enough...

Of those 6 matches, 5 of them have been SPL matches. Nope, that's not it either.

Sunday's game will be Mike McCurry's 14th SPL game of the season, meaning that an incredible 35% of his SPL appointments have been Rangers. Yip, every 3rd SPL game is a Rangers game for Mike! Is it his last season or something?

And, if you haven't dozed off yet, having dished out a total of 40 yellow cards in his 13 SPL games so far, he gave Celtic players more yellow cards in that one match at Ibrox than he has given Rangers players in all of the SPL games combined.

When coupled to the fact that no player in the SPL has received more yellow cards than Aiden McGeady, that big brut of a hammer thrower, it does make you wonder when things will start to even themselves out. Doesn't it?

Aiden has received more yellow cards than Cuellar, Weir, Papac, Adam and Ferguson combined.

Celtic have had 37 SPL yellow cards in total.

Mike McCurry has issued 12 of them in 4 games. That means that 32% of our SPL cards have been issued by Mr McCurry in 17% of our games.

Or 30% of his cards have been issued against Celtic players."

Keep up the good work TerryO, if required Im sure legal fees could be covered, now that would be a court case. It would not be lost.

if you are happy to share in McCurry et al assisted victories then that is up to you ,we will never know what it`s like to have cheating referees helping us out

on the penalty today ...stonewall a bit like JVOH last week

    but

An initial opinion is that it didn't seem the sort of game that would have passed without a booking.

PFAyr :- First off the third person writing style can I offer in mitigation a couple of Jack Daniels :-)
As you are no doubt unsurprised I do disagree, my own opinion is that the at the end of the season the table never lies, it shows a seasons efforts and skill. I kniow we are only just over the halfway mark this season and there is time to go before things are settled. I'll give credit to Celtic, the past couple of games they have shown hunger, determination and skill, they have win games and scored goals for fun so I'm not dismissing them in any way. However when you look at the table all if's buts and maybes cone second to points and we are still four ahead. The way the past few games have gone I'll admit that you have the more freeflowing high scoring team but it's form over the full season that decides it. This season I think we will be the team to take it, we aren't playing with the same verve as your own team but we are still winning and maintaining our lead. I feel that is what can decide a championship, still taking the points when playing badly.

P.S I thought you would be celebrating Kilmarnock getting beaten that seems to be the usual in your neck of the woods :-)

FC Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o was reportedly fined $17,607 by the Spanish football federation for singing anti-Real Madrid songs.

The federation ruled that the Cameroon international's actions during the 2005 Spanish league title celebrations were "very grave'' and amounted to "initiating violence.''

Eto'o, who recently set the Africa Cup of Nations scoring record, helped lead Barcelona to back-to-back titles in 2005 and '06, the same year the Catalan club also captured the Champions League trophy.

Somehow I don't see this catching on at the SFA, otherwise RFC's youth team would be ' up to their knees' in err ... fines

They may and probably get away with their corruption this year, but there is no way that Celtic PLC will allow their business to be undermined in this way.

As was mentioned, there is precedent in football, Juventus et al, for corruption to be exposed and dealt with. Only in Scotland, it won't be the SFA who will act, as they are complicit in the fraud.

UEFA will be involved ,at some stage, as will possibly the Office of Fair Trading, or whatever it is called now.

Remember, football is not parochial any more. There are too many major investors involved in the game now and weqlthy men don't become wealthy by letting small minded people p... all over them.

Some posters on this site were wondering why the odds on a penalty award in the Rangers: Killie game shortened yesterday.

My theory is that young Mr. Hammill invested heavily in that outcome and was getting scared by the Rev's tendency to leave the award to late in the game.

Well, Killie were never gonna get a win bonus out of this fixture.

roybainestache- when they resort to personal insults it is normally a sign they are losing the arguement.
I agree this is one of the most degrading parts of these phone-ins when they try to insult the intelligence of the callers.

Two facts have emerged over the past few weeks which are now taken as read, thanks to Graham Spiers-

    1. There IS toadying, sychophantic behaviour towards Sir Minty Moonbeams by many in the Laptop Loyal (Winalot Journalism).
    2. Caltic HAVE been the victim of refereeing and administrative injustices in the past. No indication though when this stopped, or, IF it has stopped. the genie is out the bottle and this is now fair game for debate.

Had Terry O or others offered these 2 facts they would have been laughed off the show as paranoid fundamentalists.

In the past I have suggested a bhoycott of their advertisers goods and services. Maybe it is time to get organised on this?

Today’s penalty award to Rangers was a stonewaller. No hassle. But, Cuellar fouled Invincible in the first half by dragging him back by the shirt when the Killie player was moving forward. The foul was given. No card! Compare it to McGeady’s yellow last Sunday. Blatant, brazen, brass-necked favouritism. And that’s what helps Rangers week-in, week-out. Ferguson grabbing a throat, McCulloch punching the ball out of a goalie’s hand…etc.

There’s at least one practically every match when stats expert Crocker (that’s the 15th time this season that a player who was born in June has taken a throw-in from the wrong position) says “he was lucky to have avoided a booking there”. Luck has nothing whatsoever to do with it!

Looking at the appointments discussion on this blog this week made me very curious about McCurry doing 4 out of 24 Celtic games and 5 out of 24 Rangers games. I see that Dougie McDonald has done 5 Celtic games and 3 Rangers games. No-one else comes close to these two for being ‘appointed’ to Celtic and Rangers matches. Why?

There are 35 referees on the SFA ‘Category 1’ list.

Out of these 35, 6 are described as ‘FIFA referees’. The ‘FIFA 6’ are Iain Brines, William Collum, Dougie McDonald, Callum Murray, Charlie Richmond, Craig Thomson.

I’m making an assumption that the ‘FIFA 6’ are the SFA’s top bananas in the refereeing fruit bowl. Otherwise, I further assume, they’d be at the likes of Almondvale and Stair Park most weeks.

    Of the 6:

Brines has done 1 Celtic game, 2 Rangers games.
Collum has done 0 Celtic games, 1 Rangers game.
McDonald has done 5 Celtic games, 3 Rangers games.
Murray has done 0 Celtic games, 0 Rangers games.
Richmond has done 2 Celtic games, 3 Rangers games.
Thomson has done 3 Celtic games, 1 Rangers game.

    What am I saying?

I’m amazed, like the rest of you, at the number of our games and theirs that are being refereed by a man who is not on the FIFA list. A man whose stated refereeing highlight is the CIS Cup Final in 2004!

The huns, obviously ,are delighted with his performance and the media are choosing to ignore it.there is enough info available to make a real back page stoater out of this , .....not a mention .

Some may say that they are concerned about defamation....GUFF

All they would have to do is highlight the stats in a non pejorative manner and let the reader fill in the blanks

Thay have no intention of doing this as it is not in their interests to upset the majority of their readership

The only way it can be brought to the fore is for our club to raise the question ...........are we going to sit back and be cheated or are we going to protect ourselves

Dr Reid ...great interview yesterday and a brilliant pash take on the huns ...however this is more serious let`s hear you

I too thought Donati was man of the match yesterday. I think maybe he got the same sort of motivational jolt felt by JV of H last week when Samaras arrived. Hartley played so well against Aberdeen that I for one thought he would start.
With McCurry reffing today I didn't entertain the slightest hope of an upset.

And if the tie is still alive come Wednesday evening, then there will be one almighty rush.
Your best bet will be to try and get a ticket whilst over there.

I believe, if any are left, after all Barca members have taken up their allocations, then these will go on sale to non UK citizens, the Monday before the game.

I’ll probably need the tin hat for this post, but here goes.

I’m a glass half full type of guy, but I have a niggling feeling that winning the league this year will be a lot harder than some of us are thinking.

Rangers are on a run of 8 straight wins (since 23rd December) and are not conceding many goals at all. We may accuse them of being ‘anti-football’ or uninspiring, but they know how to win and crucially, they seem to know how not to lose. More of this later.

Celtic are on a run of 7 straight wins since 22nd December. We are winning well, the team is playing good football and our squad has been strengthened. Some on here even think that the league is a formality. However, we need to remember that we still are four points behind them.

March will be an extremely important month for us. We have one home game and three away games - not to mention the Barcelona games. One of these away games is against rangers, a game which we absolutely cannot afford to lose. On the other side, they have three home games and only one away game. We must go into April no further behind than them we are today.

If you allow me the assumption, for discussion sake, that Celtic and rangers drop the same amount of points against the other spl teams. Therefore the crucial games are the 3 remaining derby games. To win the league, Celtic must win at least two of these games and earn a draw in the other. Winning two and losing one will not be enough. In fact, only two points from the last three derby games will suit them.

    A chilling thought.

My real concern is that rangers seem to have the ability to stop other teams winning. The Cardigan will know this and set them up to play for a draw.

Our destiny is in our hands, that’s for sure. We need 7 points from 9 in the remaining derby games. Otherwise we need them to slip up, but I just can’t see that happening. I hope that I am wrong though.

I’ve listed below the remaining fixtures. (Not sure if it is 100% accurate as I’m unsure about the postponed games)

Barca tickets. When we went over ticketless for the 0-0 game in the Uefa Cup a couple of years ago,we got tickets off taxi drivers outside the ground. They were supporter's season tickets, so we had to give up our passports to make sure we returned the tickets.
The tickets were for great seats and we were treated very well. The downside was that it cost us about £120 each.

Following on from Chic's audience with Chairman of the Board yesterday, we should be pressing for a Podcast interview for CQN.
It should have been done here first before granting it to an outlet which consciously works against our interests. The most recent example being their "Celtic slash debt but profits dip" headline.
We could have a thread which would solicit football club related questions from posters, and the most popular and incisive could be put to the Chairman.
If the good doctor shows any reluctance, let him know that I can expose the smoke filled bathroom, backhand deals which propelled him to class captain at St Pat's old annexe in 1959.

I always felt that JVOH would come good if we played the football he thrives...to his feet. As for the rest, we have players of great ability and now they seem to be believing it themselves. Great article in todays Sunday Times, "Caught In Time" slot.

It is about our return leg against Barcelona in November '64 in the Inter-Fairs Cup.

We drew the match 0-0 and went out 3-1 on aggregate.

It talks about why the competition was so called, describes our performances both away and home ans then goes on to show how that match hsad a direct link to Lisbon some 29 months later.

A couple of great quotes from Bobby Lennox to boot.

Well worth a read but I cannot do the link thing.

Yes the Huns have been racking up wins but they have recently failed to beat Hibs and Panathaniakos which proves they are well capable of dropping points against mediocre outfits.

Gretna and ICT were both a real struggle where they were fortunate to win each time

their performance against Killie today was incomparable to our recent visit their

    as for their home games

Dundee Utd ...forced to play their 5th game in two weeks after enduring the horror at fir park ( with an offside goal ...REV MC overruling the lineman)

and, St Mirren who had the best of the match until they had a man sent off

Lubo's 8.39 post tells an unpleasant truth which some Celtic men try not to think about.
We are NOT a certainty to win the title. In fact, as things stand, we are clearly second favourites. I am still hopeful that we will prevail, but if we don't, it is not the end of the world. Such things happen in sport.
The difference with us & THEM, is that they MUST win the title this year.
Their very survival as a credible SPL force depends on it.
In the event that we should fail, we can, & will, move on to next season KNOWING that we will be very short priced favourites to take next season's title. We would still be in excellent shape on & off the field, & progressing year on year.
If they lose this title, they have nowhere left to turn. They are in queer street.
They are drinking at the Last Chance Saloon. They WILL implode.
So, where as we will feel the pressure in every remaining fixture, try to imagine what the more cerebral & sentient of THEM are feeling.

I would play Caddis before Hartley at right back.

If Caddis is deemed good enough by Mr Strachan to have been in most squads recently he's good enough to play. Remember a certain goalkeeper play out his skin against Barcelona with little or no experience not so long ago!

I feel Hartley is harshly criticised at right back as it's obviously not his prefered position.

And lastly and most importantly Hartley is a must in the holding role in midfield for Wed, a role that he has been outstanding in this year in my opinion.

    Lies,damned lies and statistics...

A quote attributed to the Conservative politician Benjamin Disraeli who was prime minister in 1868 and 1874.

It is not known if he was a follower of the Glasgow Rangers football club.

I don't know what the following statistics prove or disprove.

However with the debate over the impartiality of Scottish referees, particularly Mr McCurry, becoming
the "talk of the steamie" I thought that it was only fair to EVERYONE concerned to have a cold calculated look at the FACTS.

The statistics cover the SPL only and therefore seasons 1998/1999 to date.

Hovever Mr McCurry (T M McCurry) as he was known back then first came to prominence in 1996.

It appears as if he officiated at 6 Celtic league games in the 2 seasons prior to the start of the SPL.

Celtic won 5 and lost 1 match, to Motherwell, at Fir Park. The game where Jamie Dolan played in goal for Motherwell for the last 30 minutes.

Admittedly, the match reports are taken from the Celtic View however in 4 of the games the following incidents were reported :-

    v Aberdeen (02/11/1996)

2nd minute - Di Canio was then felled in the box, resulting in penalty claims. No penalty awarded.

    v Dundee United (21/11/1996)

29th minute - Jorge Cadette tumbled as he came under pressure from Pressley as both raced to collect a Thom through ball but his appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears.

    v Kilmarnock (08/01/1997)

39th minute - Di Canio ws felled in the box after dancing past the Kilmarnock defence but no award was given.

    v Dundee United (15/03/1998)

The game began badly when Stephane Mahe was for a foul on Lars Zetterlund with just 17 SECONDS on the clock.

Incidentally, all these games were played at Celtic Park.

    Now to the SPL.

    Season 1998/1999

    Mr McCurry refereed the following

    Celtic 4 times, won 1, lost 2, drew 1 - no penalties.

    Rangers 2 times, won 2 lost 0 drew 0 - 1 penalty.

    Season 1999/2000

    Celtic 5 times, won 5, lost 0, drew 0 - 0 penalties.

    Rangers 4 times, won 2, lost 2, drew 0 - 1 penalty.

    Season 2000/2001

    Celtic 2 times, won 2, lost 0, drew 0 - 0 penalties.

    Rangers 4 times, won 3, lost 0, drew 1 - 1 penalty.

    Season 2001/2002

    Celtic 5 times, won 5, lost 0, drew 0 - 1 penalty.

    Rangers 5 times, won 4, lost 0, drew 1 - 1 penalty.

    Season 2002/2003

    Celtic 6 times, won 5, lost 0 drew 1 - 1 penalty.

    Rangers 2 times, won 2, lost p, drew 0 - 0 penalties.

    Season 2003/2004

    Celtic 1 time, won 1, lost 0, drew 0 - 0 penalties.

    Rangers 3 times, won 3, lost 0, drew 0 - 0 penalties.

    Season 2004/2005

    Celtic 4 times, won 3, lost 0, drew 1 -1 penalty.

    Rangers 3 times, won 2, lost 0, drew 1 - 1 penalty.

    Season 2005/2006

    Celtic 4 times, won 3, lost 0, drew 1 - 1 penalty.

    Rangers 2 times, won 1, lost 0, drew 1 - 0 penalty.

    Season 2006/2007

    Celtic 3 times, won 2, lost , drew 1 - 0 penalties.

    Rangers 2 times, won 2, lost 0, drew 0 - 1 penalty.

    Season 2007/2008 (24 games played)

    Celtic 4 times, won 2, lost 1, drew 1 - 0 penalties.

    Rangers 5 times, won 4, lost 1, drew 0 - 4 penalties.

    (SPL) Summary :

    Celtic 38 games, won 29, lost 3, drew 6 - 3 penalties.

    Rangers 32 games, won 25, lost 3, drew 4 - 10 penalties.

Mr McCurry has also red-carded 1 Celtic player, Bobby Petta at Pittodrie and 2 of Celtic's opponents Colin Cameron of Hearts (who thumped Johann Mjalby at Tynecastle - lucky for him he got sent-off!) and Martin Baker of Kilmarnock.

Five of Rangers' opponents have been dismissed and the only Ranger to have seen red was Prso at Motherwell last New Year.

So, in the SPL Mr McCurry has flashed 53 yellow cards at Celts, 43 at Rangers players.

Coincidentally, he has shown an equal number of yellows, 68, to both teams' opponents.

I will let you all decide what all this means?

I only know that during a lifetime following Celtic I have seen sufficient evidence, on and off the park, at least to question the impartiality of the Scottish football establishment.

Yet it isn't a disallowed goal, or a penalty denied that has reaffirmed this long held view.

This season at Ibrox in our 3-0 defeat, I saw the most blatantly biased refereeing performance I have ever seen.

Last week's outrageous "booking" of Aiden McGeady was another sinister example of what we are up against.

The charge of paranoia will of course be levelled against those of us who suspect we are not quite playing on a level playing field.

I am looking at the Celtic View dated April 7 1993.

There is a series of photographs taken by a supporter from the main stand at Celtic v Rangers game (20/03/1993).

John Collins has just scored to put Celtic 1-0 ahead.

    You will remember the game.

The first photo shows 7 of the Celtic players celebrating in front of the jungle and right on the toucline at the halfway line.

Only two other Celts, Paul McStay and Peter Grant are apart and just in the centre circle.

The second photograph, shows the 7 celebrating Celts still out on the touchline.

However, Rangers have just taken centre and McCall, Hateley and McCoist (and believe it or not the referee - Hope I think)) are making a bee-line for the Celtic goal.

It is an extraordinary photograph and as the Celtic View article reports captures an "unprecedented moment in football".

Not surprisingly, the incident, was cut out of the STV highlights of the game and ignored by the pundits.

The Press, who failed to mention the incident in their reports, criticised the club for drawing attention to the matter.

When the charge of paranoia is levelled against me as a Celtic supporter I just ask myself the question.

"Would this happen the other way round?"

I always come up with the same answer.

All the very best to the Celts on Wednesday

    Collie,

I would go for Caldwell at RB with Bobo and Mick in the centre. That first ball must be one when Barca attack in the air on the ground. Our present two at the back seem to have some difficulty winning the first ball in the air especially. We need a presence in that area. However Bobo may be injured. If so then it's either Caddis at RB or O'Dea at CB with Mick.

GC although not the greatest RB would do for me on Wedenesday. As playing PH at right back would be an act of folly on Wedenesday. Wedenesday not a time to be playing people in the wrong positions. The whole of Europe is watching us, Don't be stupid Gordon. If you do and it costs us big time then the criticism will be justified.

One word??? Falkirk!! I felt sorry for PH that day at RB. He was hung out to dry that day. Caused the goal by not pushing out and got taking to the cleaners.

Mr Hartley would start in the holdin position with Naka, Massimo and Aiden in front of him.

Interesting set of stats. Also remember the incident you describe.
A similar one you might recall was at Castle Greyskull in season 77-78.The ref concerened was JRP Gordon I think. Joe Craig was pushed in the back in the penalty box and no penalty was awarded. RAngers took a quick bye kick with all our players surrounding the ref in the penalty box. I think the bye kick was also touched inside the box. Rangers then broke up the field. The only two in our half were Peter LAtchford and Frank Munro.
The got past Munro (hard to believe I know) and drew Peter Latchford from the goal. The ball was then hit forward past Latchford (the very last man) to a Rangers player beyond him who put the ball in the net from an offside position. Goal awarded. Our players were kicking the ball off the centre spot refusing to start the game. Neilly Mochan was sent on to tell them to get on with it. If it appeared in You Are The Ref you would have said it was impossible that it could be a real example.
Later in the game, Alex McDonald, standing on the goal line, saved a shot from Roy Aitken with two hands. No penalty. The Sunday Mail carried a photograph of the McDonald incident on the back page.

Brilliant. Or McCurry may be a Livi fan delighting in their 2004 CIS victory while observing a flawless Willie Young performance.

So let me get this straight. McCurry appears to only have reffed a CIS final once, no Scottish Cup finals, never been on the FIFA list, yet appears to be the most prominent SFA ref in this, I believe, his final year, to the extent he has reffed Rangers far more than any other. And in today's match he booked two home players and no away players.

    Top work. Forensic examination.

Remember it well, that was indeed the infamous JRP Gordon game... was it not John Greig who scored that goal?
Both penalties were in the JVoH category of stonewallers, McDonald's was at the Celtic end goal and it was the most blatant hand ball ever seen.
    That was some season!

It was indeed the greatest ever Ranker who scored that goal.
That still ranks as the worst season in my memory of watching Celtic. I can only hope it remains that way for a very long time.

Just been flicking through our results over the season - astonished to see (according to the Beeb) that we had NINE players booked that day against the huns, I thought it was only 7, which is unbelievable in itself.

Who was the ref that day, I'm guessing it was the good minister?

I noted today, some had to say, the defence was hanging left.
So am on here, my have no fear, lined up a team for the best.

    boruc
    caddis McManus naylor
    heartly caldwell robson
    Nakamura donatti McGeady
    Samaras

When ragged they've ran, I'd be changing the plan by bringing on jan for donatti

aye scotty too, into our view,
I'd bring him for a burnt oot samaras

    just my humble opinion.

Interesting quote from WGS in The Observer

"Andreas Iniesta is a proper midfield player, who is a master of all aspects of that role. He is strong skillful and sees everything. When we saw Barca take the lead aginst Rangers in their Group match earlier in the season some of their players seemed to switch to half-power. Not Inesta he sustains his high level of perfomance throughout the match."

I reckon Paul Hartley will be keeping a very close eye on him on Wed

What struck me though was how young the team looked ,stood beside skoosh and mick getting pics taken and was surprised skoosh was the same size as me
whole squad was there and they just looked like bhoys or im i getting old ,watched skoosh all he did was laugh to whoever was sittin next to him bit of a lad that bhoy ,Aiden skippy ben georgeio lee zico bobo artur, all giving it "walk on " before they departed
Bhoys this bunch of lads were like on boys on a schools outing lol,was great to see the bhoys all together looking happy and exited ,think this was a first celtic rally for a few and were really surprised by it,big artur trying to nick the mike at the end and sing walk on by himself bit of a hoot

first scorer is only bookies money if they price it up correctly

the percentages when pricing up first scorer are well weighted in favour of the bookies and should not be a punters bet because of the percentages but if there is an error in the pricing/opinion then value can be had

    Graham Speirs today
“Even as we speak, through one or two of his ever-attendant media poodles, Murray is already plotting a financial counter-blast on behalf of Rangers, as he always does when anything positive comes out of Celtic. It is a strange ailment, whereupon any good news from across Glasgow seems to be a wounding personal slight for the Rangers chairman.
Prepare for a moonbeams-tinted propaganda blast in the sports pages soon. You can put your house on it.”
    James Traynor today
“Just the other day on BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound programme Celtic's chairman John Reid made it cl his club don't have to sell players. He said Celtic are not in the same position as Rangers, suggesting his club's financial stability means they don't need to get rid of anyone. Rangers were asked to comment but quite rightly preferred to note Reid's words and say nothing.
However, an announcement, expected to be made soon, could be the catalyst for a complete Rangers' makeover. Don't be surprised if this club are suddenly in a position to re-invent themselves.”

    From Celticminded.com

Barca president hails best fans in the world

    Paul Cuddothy

"BARCELONA President Joan Laporta has hailed Celtic supporters as the best travelling fans in the world and is looking forward to their visit to the Catalan city in two weeks time.

Speaking ahead of the first leg of the last 16 UEFA Champions League tie between Celtic and Barcelona in Glasgow, Sr Laporta also spoke of the great bond the two clubs share.

And the Barcelona president is anticipating the game at Celtic Park, which he describes as “a great venue.”

Sr Laporta said: “We are very much looking forward to our visit to Glasgow this week, when we will meet our old friends, Celtic, once again.

“It will be a real pleasure to visit Celtic Park and feel the atmosphere of a great UEFA Champions League night at such a great venue. We have very much enjoyed our previous visits to Celtic and I am sure we will do so again.

“In recent years we have developed an excellent relationship with Celtic, something which we hope to continue.”

Celtic have been working closely with Barcelona club officials as well as the city council and the relevant authorities ahead of the return leg in the Catalan city on Tuesday, March 4.

The Barcelona president continued: “We are also looking forward very much to welcoming Celtic supporters to Barcelona in early March.

“The Celtic supporters are fantastic, in fact the best travelling supporters in the world as we have seen many times. We can assure Celtic supporters that they will receive a very warm welcome when they visit the city.

“I know that Celtic supporters are extremely passionate about their club, a club which I believe, like FC Barcelona, is different.

“We know that supporters will travel in huge numbers to follow their team, but we also know the great reputation of good behaviour which Celtic fans enjoy and clearly we are looking forward to hosting the Celtic fans in the city once again.

“I know that the city council, the police, Celtic FC and FC Barcelona have been working very closely over a number of weeks to ensure that Celtic’s visit will again be a great success.

“There will be special arrangements made in the city to ensure that we do all we can to ensure this is the case. We hope all Celtic supporters enjoy their visit to Barcelona.”

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “We are delighted to be making another trip to Barcelona, one of Europe’s finest cities. We would like to thank the people of Barcelona in advance for once again hosting our club and our fans in their great city.

“In recent years, our fans have travelled to the city and enjoyed tremendous hospitality and a very warm welcome from the Barcelona residents.

“Once again our fans will travel to Barcelona, looking to enjoy the city, to enjoy football and to represent their club in a positive and friendly spirit.

“Our fans will be looking to support their team in a positive manner, to respect the city and at the same time make more friends as they always do when they travel.

“We are pleased that our supporters have developed a reputation for excellent behaviour when they travel to matches throughout Europe.

“In 2003, our fans were awarded the official Fair Play Awards from both FIFA and UEFA in recognition of their excellent conduct at the UEFA Cup final, when 80,000 fans travelled to Seville.

“Celtic has been fortunate to have developed a great relationship with FC Barcelona. We have very similar histories as football clubs and in recent years have become very close. Like Barcelona, Celtic is different - much more than just a football club.

“Many Celtic supporters travel to Barcelona to watch the Barca team. We know many stories of Celtic fans travelling to the Camp Nou to watch Barca matches in recent years, particularly after Henrik Larsson signed for Barcelona.

“We hope this great relationship with Barcelona continues. We look forward to welcoming all Barcelona supporters to Glasgow for the match this Wednesday and we look forward to making our visit in March.”

Ibrox 'spy' Nacho gives Barcelona dossier on Celts
By STEPHEN McGOWAN - More by this author »

Last updated at 09:03am on 18th February 2008

Nacho Novo has given Barcelona the lowdown on Celtic and labelled the Parkhead defence as aggressive, Scott Brown bad-tempered and Artur Boruc as a goalkeeper capable of calamities.

As the Catalan giants prepare for their Champions League showdown with Celtic, Rangers forward Novo has highlighted the weaknesses he sees within his city rivals. He also found time to list their strengths and singled out Shunsuke Nakamura as their most potent weapon.

While Barcelona will undoubtedly have done their own homework on Gordon Strachan's team, Novo's crib notes will be a valuable addition to their pre-match build-up.

"Defence is where Celtic are strongest, they are very aggressive," Novo told a Spanish newspaper. "If you go into a 50-50 challenge with them, they are going to crush you.

"People like Leo Messi or Bojan Krkic may suffer. They won't hold back and when they tackle, they will take you and the ball."

On midfielder Brown, who is suspended for the first leg, he added: "Scott is very, very aggressive and runs many miles during the game - he can be a key player. But he has a very bad temper and if you are looking to annoy him, then you can.

"Scott McDonald up front has scored many goals and is in good shape. He's small but he is a nightmare. He uses the ball very well and is not afraid of anything or anyone. Artur Boruc is a very good keeper but it depends on what day it is. He has games where he is excellent but there are games where a very easy shot goes underneath him.

"He has saved them many times and got them into the Champions League but he can be peculiar."

Yet, despite identifying weaknesses, Novo insists Barca will have to be at their best to take anything from their visit to Glasgow. "Nakamura is their leader. A great player. He has also scored many incredible goals from set-pieces," the Spaniard continued. "Celtic have an advantage because they will have learned a lot from when we played Barcelona. And they have made some good signings in January.

"Celtic will go for it in Glasgow because they know that is where their best chance lies. And if they get a win, I can assure you in Barcelona they will 'park the bus'."
