Scott Brown eases Celtic past Hearts

I know we beat Hearts 5-0 earlier in the season, but yesterday’s 3-0 victory was perhaps Celtic’s best league win of the season.

Scott Brown looks like he is beginning to settle into life at Celtic. It has taken his time to find form, as it has his most regular central midfield partner, Massimo Donati. It is perhaps no coincidence that Donati is also returning to his early season form.

Shunsuke Nakamura and Aiden McGeady are a joy to watch, but you don’t feel either player is under the kind of pressure to lift the team they have been at times this season.

With Brown and Donati passing and prodding, and new-born Vennegoor of Hesselink and McDonald scoring for fun, Aiden and Naka look far more relaxed when they get the ball.

I said on Friday that the Hearts game was the most important of the week, which it was. Aiden and Naka are not the only ones looking more relaxed these days, you and me can look forward to another memorable European night at Celtic Park on Wednesday, knowing that one of Europe’s finest teams will face worthy opponents.

The league is Celtic’s focus, but we can go into the Barcelona game with the confidence that comes from eight consecutive wins.

I was in Rosie O'Grady's and met some of the local's from the Perth C.S.C. (briefly).
I was in the night before the Hib's game. There was an Irish band on.
It was the day that the CL draw was made against Barca.

They were making a big fuss over an ex Aberdeen player who scored against us in a cup final.
He seemed a nice bloke actually.

I watched a rerun of the DU away game in Durty Nellies.

Perth does have a lot of Scottish expat's ,so i was not too surprised with the number of Jungle Jim's over there.

"In the name of the father
    By TOM ENGLISH

THIS is a tale of father and son and it begins at the McGeady family home on the southside of Glasgow and with a video tape that in 10 minutes tells you so much about the making of Aiden McGeady.

It was filmed in the early 1990s when he was eight, when he sat before the camera of aspiring film-maker and friend of his dad's, Malcolm McKissock, and spoke about his life's dream, how he would like to play for Celtic (and then for Liverpool), how he loves John Collins and Pierre van Hooijdonk (because they take great free-kicks) and how great his dad is (because he's there all the time and watches him play).

There is glorious footage of the boy performing on a red dirt track in the Gorbals, a slow motion film of him weaving his way through the traffic of a seven-a-side game for the Govanhill Cubs, a slaloming run and a thing of beauty that finishes with him rolling his foot over the top of the ball to deceive the goalkeeper before calmly passing into an empty goal.

Then there is John, the father. John is on the film, too. But he's not looking to the promise of tomorrow like Aiden. He's thinking about the what-might-have-beens of his past. He's talking about his own time in football, his departure to Sheffield United at 16, his terrible homesickness, his five years as a winger and his injuries that left him with a busted knee-cap and a broken career in his mid-20s. Mostly, he is talking about his father, about the problems they had, about the lack of interest he displayed in John's own football life. When you connect it to the close bond between himself and Aiden, the poignancy and relevance of it is obvious.

From a distance John might appear as another example of a man trying to live his life through the glory of his son's success. No doubt people have said that at some stage but that is not the case. All he's tried to do is steer his boy clear of the problems he himself encountered.

John switches off the video tape and talks about his old man. "Until about five years before his death I never really spent much time with him," he says. "Himself and my mum were raised within a few minutes of each other in Gweedore in County Donegal and my father was a typical product of his generation. He was a tough boy, not given to sentiment. He didn't really take an interest in my football, didn't really understand the game to be honest. Years later I found out that when he was down the pub having a few pints with his mates he'd talk about me, he'd tell the lads how I was getting on. I never knew this. He'd talk about me rather than to me. He was probably no different to many other fathers in those days."

Is it any wonder that John has been there every step of the way for his own boy? Hardly.

The sense of pride in his son's career is huge. Last weekend John visited his mother in Donegal. The family went down to the local hotel to watch Celtic play Aberdeen and they smiled their way through Aiden's performance. He has never played better, Gordon Strachan said as much. This week he will face a bigger and better challenge when Barcelona arrive in Glasgow. Word has it that Aiden is more than a little excited at the prospect.

John tells you they've had some right barneys in this very room we're sitting in. "I'm very honest in assessing his performances. Always have been.

"We go through it after every game and I don't go easy on him because I don't think that's the right thing to do. He's not going to do everything right in every game so what's the point in pretending. Oh, we've had some discussions, put it that way."

Theirs has been a hell of a journey. He tells you all about the interest from down south, the expeditions to the top clubs in England for trial matches, Liam Brady's pursuit of his signature for Arsenal and the disbelieving words of other youth team coaches. There was one time at Everton when a development officer from Goodison Park invited McGeady down for a game, prefacing the invite with some caution. 'Your boy will have to be very good to get a look-in because we've got the best here'.

The guy started talking about an 11-year-old on Everton's books. This kid was special. That day at the trial McGeady played in the same side with a young man that John feels sure was Wayne Rooney. And McGeady excelled, just as he did pretty much everywhere he went.

These were promising days in the young life of John and Elaine McGeady's son but domestically things were tough. A little while before John had hit the wall as regards working on the buildings, the allure of digging holes and laying slabs and pouring concrete having worn off after seven or eight years of that hard life; John was a restless spirit. 'What do you want to do?' Elaine asked. 'I'd love to teach,' John replied. So he did. He went to university and became an English teacher.

"I'm 49 now and I've been teaching for 10 years and I love it. But in the beginning it was hard going financially. We were living in this house and we had a substantial mortgage and kids. Some nights I'd be sitting here with my head in my hands worrying about how we'd survive the following week. A former teammate of mine, Gary Hamson, who is now Aiden's agent, rang me one day and said, 'look, you're entitled to a retraining grant from the PFA, and sure enough I got a cheque in the post for £2,500 and that made a hell of a difference.

"Around this time loads of clubs wanted Aiden but I was determined that he wasn't going to England. I remember what I was like down there at the start and Aiden would have been the same. At such a young age he'd have missed home as much as I had.

"Clubs made offers, not overtly, not a promise of a briefcase full of money but overtures were made from certain places that would have sorted out our financial plight at the time. But that was never going to happen. Just as long as we got by and kept the house we were fine. Aiden was always going to stay in Scotland."

The crunch came on an afternoon in Blackburn. Another day, another trial, another pressure game for the young man. This time McGeady failed to live up to expectation.

'How did I do, dad?' he asked

'Well, you didn't cover yourself in glory, son. You didn't get much of the ball but when you got it you didn't do a lot with it.'

    'Oh.'

The conversation developed. Decision time was at hand. 'Are you happy going to these trials, Aiden?'

'Well, I feel under pressure all the time… '

'I don't think it's fair on you. I think it's too much. Do you know what you want to do.'

'Yes, dad, I want to sign for Celtic.'

The deal was done in a day. Celtic had the player they coveted for years and McGeady had a stable footballing environment he could flourish in. And how he has flourished. It hasn't been a bed of roses for him but he's worked his way through it. There was a time, pretty early in Strachan's new era, when you thought that McGeady was going to be one of his victims, one of those faces that just didn't fit. He was dropped, there was talk of him leaving, there was even more talk of Strachan being especially hard on him and now there is just sweetness and light and glowing tributes from the manager about performances so good that Strachan feels McGeady will be showing the DVDs to his grandchildren in time.

There's been worshipping at Celtic Park but abuse away from it. This is the downside, much of it traced back to his decision to declare his international allegiance to the Republic of Ireland. John remembers a friend phoning and warning him about the possible ramifications.

"Aiden was only 15 at the time but we knew there'd be stick down the line. We just didn't realise how much stick. I mean, to hear your son being called a traitor is a little hard to take.

"To be fair, it was a lot harder a year ago than it is now but those people who abused him that way didn't know the family history. Look at the video again. He's eight and look at the top he's wearing. It's an Ireland top. He absolutely loves Scotland but this thing goes deep. It wasn't him being opportunistic but some people won't believe me when I say that."

Has it bothered Aiden? A little, for sure. But he's got broad shoulders for a young man and has an amount of inner-confidence, "much, much more than I had when I was player," says John. "I got very nervous before games. He doesn't.

"He just revels in it, the same as he did when he was out on the road there doing keepy-uppy with tennis balls and golf balls and annoying the neighbours."

John says he used to go to an upstairs bedroom to see how his boy was doing. Now the view is shared by 60,000 others, all hoping and praying that a little more McGeady magic on Wednesday will lead to another one of those heady, heady Parkhead nights."

    Paul67:

I nailed my colours to the post when we signed him and I stand by what I said then, I think (Henrik Larsson aside… for the moment) that Scot Brown is the best signing we’ve ever made. That is just my opinion and within the confines of that opinion I include Joe McBride, Alfie Conn, Artur Boruc, and my favourite player ever in a Celtic jersey… Bertie Auld.

I really do think he, Scot Brown, has it all. I don’t think he is a headless chicken. Time alone will tell. He has just got to simmer a little bit and let his ability do the talking.

On a separate issue… whatever happened to all those ‘Aiden haters’. Are they now like retired ‘Hells Angels’… cringing in their boots as they slaver over their rice pudding.

On a slightly different topic, you stated that our merchandising was around 15m last year. This obviously dwarfs Rangers guaranteed 4.5m but two questions....Did Rangers make much more than the money promised by JJB for merchandising and secondly, how much of ours came from Japan? In other words, how reliant are we, if at all, on our Japanese star to keep our noses infront of Rangers in terms of merchandising and commercial spin-offs?

Great story about Aiden and his dad.

The young man can mature into a world great.
His attitude when he loses the ball now is brilliant.
In the past it seemed that he was playing for himself.
He is now a team player.

When he clicks ,he is on another planet from those around him.

This has come from an extra yard in pace, improved upper body strength ,and better decision making on when to release the ball.
Allied to his improved work ethic.
The goal's are now more forthcoming also, and he still has several years before he will be at his peak.

His Dad seems like a salt of the earth type of Ghuy.Who has helped Aiden make all the right decisions ,so far.

I would explode if i had to listen to my own daughter being criticised, the way modern players are.

I'm sure Aiden is just as proud of his dad ,as his dad is of him.

Mr Strachan is also due praise for how the Bhoy is being nurtured.

I usually agree with what you say...

BUT I have to say I was disappointed with Scott Brown yesterday - as I have been for most of the season - and have strong doubts about the cohesiveness of our midfield.

Donati is useful in front of the back four but he is not linking up well with Brown.

Easing Robson into Brown's position could be the answer.

Naka is also still leaving us exposed on his flank.

I think a lot of the flak the defense has taken this season is a result of the porousness of our midfiled.

Unless we tighten up we will get well beat by Barcelona, and will struggle for points in the three remaining games against Rangers.

For what its worth, Samaras is outstanding and I would like to see him replace JVOH asap...

Dont mean to be rude, but where you at the game yesterday? Donati was man of the match, he was excellent.

Scott Brown was also excellent, reminded me of Neil Lennon when he first signed for us in the way he helped out our defence.

"Unless we tighten up we will get well beat by Barcelona, and will struggle for points in the three remaining games against Rangers"

We may get beat on Wed, personally I think we will win. But your comment about the hun games is so way off mate, we will skelp them.

As I said earlier about a Celtic "fan" who placed a large bet on the huns to win the league (tell me a true Celtic fan who would do that) I will bet anyone £10 per point between us and the huns come the end of the season. Ill expect to be £100 up at least.

We have the resources to win the league, and I am optimistic we will.

But Scott Brown is not producing the goods, and just because he bothered to show up yesterday - as opposed to other games when he barely features apart from making a few reckless challenges - does not cut it as a Celtic player.

The Hibs team revolved around him, and perhaps that is why adapting to life at a team with quality all over the park is difficult for him. But a bit of bloody elbow grease will greatly help his game.

Donati is good defensively, and he has a good work rate going back. But he and Brown have failed to form a solid partnership leaving our whole centre midfield exposed, and our shape ragged after failed attacks.

I think Robson should definitely have a role in our midfield.

And Bazzabhoy - I would never put money on friggin Rangers to win the league...

    Scoreline flattered them.
Killie did not have a goalscorer today but loads of possession.
Huns defense at times just looked desperate, clearing as high and as far as they could.
Darch goes to ground when you as much as look at him.
Cuellar slow and clumsy but fortunate.
Weir.. well enough said read Cuellar.
Fast flowing football and Samaras up front and we will take a barrel load off this mob.
Still waiting for somebody to go at them and have a go but this yera I cannot see it apart from us.

    unashamed bias

think you`re man was sean south...kitalba offered to take his bet don`t know if it was struck

had been wondering to take you`re bet up ...if i lost £100 i would be the happiest man in the world if i won £100 i`d give it to SVDP

    on the hun game

most of their players are very poor

    both full backs are guff

the goalie whilst reasonable is a hot head who can`t catch a cross

Boyd scores goals does hee haw else

    Novo and Drasticville ...well ..

as for the sand dancers Naismith and Burke ...soft light weights with only moderate skill at beat

the huns were not a patch on us ...three games against them to come on current form we will win all of them and the leagues in the bag

games against these bar stewards can`t come quick enough ....must be the reason the league are trying to avoid arranging the postponed one

    STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS

Decided to have a wee look at the age of our team from yesterday.

Nobody over the age of 29. Not even after three substitutions.

    Interesting fact:-

Two pair of players share the same date of birth - Artur and Massimo who will both be 28 when we play Barcelona on Wednesday and Barry Robson and big Jan who both turned 29 on 7th November.

    Boruc (28 on Wednesday)
    Hinkel (25)
    Caldwell (25)
    McManus (25)
    Naylor (27)
    Nakamura (29)
    Brown (22)
    Donati (28 on Wednesday)
    McGeady (21)
    McDonald (24)
    Venegoor (29)

    Samaras (23 on Thursday)
    Robson (29)
    Hutchinson (19)

From what I've seen of Samaras he could become a bit of a star at Celtic over the next few years if he were to sign permanently, as will McGeady and - despite his patchy form as the main man in midfield - Scott Brown.

Brown has went from being a youngster at Hibs to being the big hope at Celtic, we will see the best of him in the next couple of seasons I'm sure.

With Skippy only 24 things are looking bright for the next couple of years.

This is a crucial season - if we can get 3 in a row I am certain this club will go on and make it 5 or 6.

    GO GET IT BHOYS.

Perhaps you and I have been watching games through different lenses.Scott Brown has centred a team who have scored 13 goals in 3 games. Our resurgence in form has coincided with Naka,s return yet you see weaknesses? Also our struggles after a good start to season when Brown was moved to wing when Naka was injured. To blame midfield for defense is a joke.
All season long i have complained about defence backing up to early and not getting forward to compress the space. They create most of their own problems.

Terry O as usual well said and keep up the good work, although I thought on this occasion Keevins drew you in with his "cutting to the chase" question.

In my humble opinion, you should have put it back to them, by asking why a referee who continuously "misses" important decisions like McCurry does and the facts speak for themselves, continues to get high profile games and hasn’t been dealt with by the SFA?

    Luca Brassi

He stated several facts about McCurrys booking campain.

Apparently there were several bookable offences in the game today that went without a card. I dont know about them, I dont watch anti-football.
Facts were also stated about various other bookings this season.

Fraser Wishart now saying that McCurry should get serious and ask his legal team to ask for a transcript from Terrys call, unreal.

They ended up saying they dont want any more calls on McCurry.

A wee snippet I came across elsewhere.

''When Mike McCurry blows his whistle at Rugby Park on Sunday he will have completed his sixth Rangers game of the season, more than double that of any other referee. That's not the interesting fact, although you may think that is interesting enough...

Of those 6 matches, 5 of them have been SPL matches. Nope, that's not it either.

Sunday's game will be Mike McCurry's 14th SPL game of the season, meaning that an incredible 35% of his SPL appointments have been Rangers. Yip, every 3rd SPL game is a Rangers game for Mike! Is it his last season or something?

And, if you haven't dozed off yet, having dished out a total of 40 yellow cards in his 13 SPL games so far, he gave Celtic players more yellow cards in that one match at Ibrox than he has given Rangers players in all of the SPL games combined.

When coupled to the fact that no player in the SPL has received more yellow cards than Aiden McGeady, that big brut of a hammer thrower, it does make you wonder when things will start to even themselves out. Doesn't it?

Aiden has received more yellow cards than Cuellar, Weir, Papac, Adam and Ferguson combined.

Celtic have had 37 SPL yellow cards in total.

Mike McCurry has issued 12 of them in 4 games. That means that 32% of our SPL cards have been issued by Mr McCurry in 17% of our games.

Or 30% of his cards have been issued against Celtic players."

Keep up the good work TerryO, if required Im sure legal fees could be covered, now that would be a court case. It would not be lost.

Sounds like they're getting a bit touchy on this subject by all accounts as the stats dont lie.
Yep honest Mike must have misplaced his yellow card again today re some of the hun tackling.
Didnt catch the final stats but at one point it was 15-5 fouls in favour of guess who?

Lynott67 @15.22 :- Are you honestly trying to say there was something dodgy about that penalty? If you are I would suggest youask your guide dog. The player jumped with his arm above the head of his opponent and cleared the ball with his forearm. It was a clear, obvious and fair penalty.

PFAyr :- We may as your opinion states not be a patch on you but the league table shows otherwise. Four points ahead with the same number of games played would perhaps lead others to disagree with you.

if you disagree say so what`s with all the third person rubbish

we`re the better team you have the most points

your greater points total is for a variety of reasons and influences some of which we have no control over

if you are happy to share in McCurry et al assisted victories then that is up to you ,we will never know what it`s like to have cheating referees helping us out

on the penalty today ...stonewall a bit like JVOH last week

    but

    we were denied it

there in lies the significant palpable difference

CelticFirst :- Because we are the fairest, sweetest playing, most pure football side on the planet :-) OK fair enough I doubt if ebven the most loyal Rangers fan would go along with that one either lol
I thought the standard of refereeing today matched the football, poor, insipid and lacking in skill. I commented on the penalty incident as I have watched it replayed on any other incident I hope you don't mind if I watched the game on telly first before giving a comment. An initial opinion is that it didn't seem the sort of game that would have passed without a booking.

PFAyr :- First off the third person writing style can I offer in mitigation a couple of Jack Daniels :-)
As you are no doubt unsurprised I do disagree, my own opinion is that the at the end of the season the table never lies, it shows a seasons efforts and skill. I kniow we are only just over the halfway mark this season and there is time to go before things are settled. I'll give credit to Celtic, the past couple of games they have shown hunger, determination and skill, they have win games and scored goals for fun so I'm not dismissing them in any way. However when you look at the table all if's buts and maybes cone second to points and we are still four ahead. The way the past few games have gone I'll admit that you have the more freeflowing high scoring team but it's form over the full season that decides it. This season I think we will be the team to take it, we aren't playing with the same verve as your own team but we are still winning and maintaining our lead. I feel that is what can decide a championship, still taking the points when playing badly.

P.S I thought you would be celebrating Kilmarnock getting beaten that seems to be the usual in your neck of the woods :-)

FC Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o was reportedly fined $17,607 by the Spanish football federation for singing anti-Real Madrid songs.

The federation ruled that the Cameroon international's actions during the 2005 Spanish league title celebrations were "very grave'' and amounted to "initiating violence.''

Eto'o, who recently set the Africa Cup of Nations scoring record, helped lead Barcelona to back-to-back titles in 2005 and '06, the same year the Catalan club also captured the Champions League trophy.

Somehow I don't see this catching on at the SFA, otherwise RFC's youth team would be ' up to their knees' in err ... fines

this togeteher with the continued performances of the MIB is doubly annoying

as a fair minded currant bun ( beat that for an oxymoron) what is your take on the McCurry stats

Do any of the esteemed statisticians on the blog have penalty/card count stats for seasons when the league has been fought closely? Celtic have won most of their recent championships by miles and those lost by inches - that's when dodgy refs make a massive difference.
