Still trying to win control of the Celtic media agenda

I would like to thank all those who supported Celtic Quick News with news and information through the transfer window. I changed pace last month, and made a serious attempt to get the project back on track and grab control of the Celtic media agenda.

20 years ago the newspapers broke all the football news. Then radio, teletext and 24 hour television changed how we got our news, but now a web community like ours is more agile, has more coverage and is cheaper to maintain than any old media outlet.

The future role of newspapers will be to reflect and interpret the news; their publishing deadlines will make it increasingly difficult for them to break news. This will present challenges, but hopefully will result in better coverage and analysis.

Radio remains the football media giant. It is all pervasive, limited in source and delivers enormous audiences, which makes it pivotal in setting and changing the football agenda in Scotland.

But whereas we once had no choice but to wait on football bulletins bringing us a news item parcelled up with facts and interpretation, radio is now seldom first with the news and it does not have the scope to interpret facts as thoroughly as a web site. All it has in its favour is audience size.

Celtic Quick News has to maintain standards also, which I know some of you felt slipped last month. We’ll do better in the next window.

It has been a while, but I promised I would get back to you; I know it is almost a month since we talked about this, but this is one of the sources where I got my statement from. Without tracking back, I believe your assessment may have been more accurate than mine.

Again, apologies with taking so long. I’m one of these guys that backs up my back ups and I’ve know got so many memory sticks full of all sorts of one line throw aways’ and other useless stuff - it takes an age to find any of my files. I do have more on this subject, somewhere, and when I come across it I’ll happily give you a shout.

    Paul,

will you be breaking the news on the Trinadad and Tabago club we have setup as a feeder club? Given the latest that has emerged for this country over the last few years I can only view this as a crucial strategic step forward.

How does this link in withthe Belgian club we have links with?

How does that fit into the bigger picture of trying to produce players of a high standard with realtively low spending power?

Oh I forgot to mention the acadamies we are setting up in America.

    Africa next?

As a regular critic of the plc board and their attitude to the development of the football team I feel its only fair that I give crdit where it is due.

Brining in five new players all of whom seem capable of contributing to the success of the team is not only good business sense but shows that with a financial outlay of nearly 3 million punds they are serious about grabbing the SPL by the scruff of the neck and delivering three in a row.

My only concern now is that WGS still has to get over the apparent reluctance he has to drop certain players like JVofH and ScottBrown. Both these players performances recently have tailed off and now we have genuine options to replace them.

Hutchison and Mizuno will need time to make an impact but I expect the other three signings to immediately challenge for starting positions.

    Well done PL and WGS.

very apt point Flanders on Snyde this morning stated Celtic buy in bulk, with it's deep discount inference while slating the Italian player as unambitious for not wanting to play for Rangers.

There are 2 obvious contentions from the current reporting:

The Winalot mentality is very much alive. Remember Fergus being slated for stating the total cost of Andy Thom fee + wages, while Chic can now happily refer to Rangers target as £7m signing.

Secondly, WGS treats the press with disdain. They do not like it and will attempt to paint Celtic in a bad light particularly focussing on Gordon.

I'm posting this to you,but It's really for all the posters on CQN.

When my brother came round to my house last night with the news that our oldest brother had past away,we both had a wee cry,we remenisced about the good times he had,and I know he died a happy man.

He was eighty years old,and lived life to the full, and I mean to the full.

I thought that I would'nt shed another tear, but I have'nt stopped crying, and it's not because that I've lost my brother, that was sad in itself, but it was the thought that so many people on this site, have sent their respects and condolences,to someone that they never knew,it overwhelmed me,In fact I'm going to blame you all for driving me to drink last night,(only joking)I had so many e-mails to answer,I think I got gout in my fingers.

I woke up this morning, with the sound of the phone ringing,Thanks winningemmell,I could have slept all day,And Paul was'nt far behind.

A big thanks to everyone on CQN,what a site to be involved with,Paul I do'nt think you realise the monster you have created, and it grows, by the day.

I have to decide whether to travel to Vancouver for the funeral,it knocked the stuffing out of me the last time I went(and I was in good health then),so I do'nt think I could handle it now.

I may pass on the funeral.

When we were drawn against Barca,I was'nt keeping well, and thought the two hour journey may be to much for the old body,so I think the nine hour flight over to Canada, would just about see me off.

I'll be at the killie game to-morrow,see you there.

All manager has favourites and our last manager was no different.

Perhaps Gordon doesn't drop Scott or Jan because the players in reserve aren't as good and that is why he has strengthened in these areas.

Please, please, please sign Metzelder in the summer.

Now I don't normally listen to local commercial radio but I had to tune in this morning to hear what Keevins was going to say about the apparent trumping of Rangers at the sales. I missed the first 20 seconds but got the reverental tones when he was describing the loan signing from Fulham and the late, failed bid for the Italian.
Now, the main reason I don't listen to local commercial stations is that they pander to the largest dempgraphic in their local area. That in itself is not necessarily wrong but when there is a huglely significant marginal minority who are paid lip service then it clearly is.
I have witnessed too many examples of shadenfreude from the airwaves directed at CFC when things don't go according to plan to merely put it down to coincidence.
Pandering and sycophancy seem to be standard operating procedures when it comes to RFC however.
Note the scorn poured onto WGS words after the narrow but thoroughly deserved victory against Killie. If Keevins had a pair then maybe he would leave the pundits' booth and tackle the man directly. Has this happened?

Now we have bought in a very exciting RB. A proven goalscorer up front, a proven goalscorer in MF (Similar to Alan Thomson). A bundle of raw talent from Japan who has already featured in a talented international team and an unknown but clearly rated attacker.
    Buying in bulk!
If Walter had done the same business instead of some international prestidigitation by private jet then he would be on the Queen's Birthday Honours list.
It fair makes the blood simmer.
Jim in EK, if you are lurking in the background 'working', how many so far?

If these so called Celtic fans would only have the b*lls to stand up & say what they believe then people like you & i would maybe have a bit of respect for them, but only maybe!

There is nothing wrong with writing or saying something about a particular club or player as long as you truly believe in what you are doing & not just pandering to people in order that you get a nice cushy job.

Sorry for the rant but i hate people who don't speak the truth in order not to offend certain people.I know this from having many heated discussions with Rangers supporters in work.

Before we all get too excited about signing Metzelder have a look at his career stats. Whilst an outstanding defender, he's played circa 60 games in 5 years including missing the entire season 03/04. That's too much of a risk for us to take on.

His international defensive partner has surpassed him (there may be a chance to see him at Ibrox soon) and we'd be better served there. Or just sign Andrea Barzagli from Palermo!

The singing youth team of Rangers

    By Roddy Forsyth
    Last Updated: 1:36am GMT 01/02/2008

Journos gathering in the foyer at Murray Park for Tuesday's pre-match briefing for the Rangers v Hearts CIS Insurance Cup semi final were startled by a sudden outbreak of singing from the youth dressing rooms just down the corridor.

Despite an impressive reflex effort by the security man to shut the doors on the din, it was possible to identify that hallowed bluenose ditty, sung to the Lee Marvin tune, I Was Born Under A Wandering Star and paraphrased as I Was Born Under A Union Jack, the refrain of which goes:

Do you know where hell is?

Hell is up the Falls, Heaven's up the Shankill Road, And under Derry's Walls!

Yes, you can take the training ground out of Govan...

Lardo and tooheys_new, I posted on a previous thread comparing the "bulk buying" or otherwise of players by celtic and rangers.

    Gordon Strachan -

    Spending Per Month
    In £930,000
    Out £430,000

    Spending Per Player
    In £900,000
    Out £520,000

    Smith -
    Spending Per Month
    In £1,140,000
    Out £910,000.00

    Spending Per Player
    In £650,000
    Out £780,000

Smith on average has spent more per month than Gordon Strachan to the figure of £210,000 however he has spent £250,000 less than Gordon Strachan per player. This suggests it is our counterparts who are shopping from the bargain bin.

This is because Celtic are able to attract players of a better quality than Rangers. A scenario which has been borne out by the transfer window.

Smith's fire sale has generated twice as much money as Celtic’s asset management. However the slim difference between monthly spend suggests that this money is not being reinvested in players.

Big Liam, no surprise there I must say. I don't doubt that some of the Celtic youngsters like to take part in some un-PC songs themselves, but I would like to think that they don't do it in the dressing room with the coaches present as likely to have been the case on this occasion. It puts doubts in Murray's claims that he's trying to stamp out bigotry at Rangers.

Hello Paul and all the CQN regulars.
This is my first post (well second if you count the test), finally got round to creating a blogger account.
i have been a long time lurker and although i haven’t always agreed with some of the posts CQN is single handily responsible for keeping me sane at work so thanks guys 
I don’t want my first post to sound a negative one however I have to say I am slightly under-whelmed by this transfer window. Ok agree it has not been a bad window for us but it IMHO hasn’t been a successful one either.
    1. We have sold a top grade European class “CENTRE MIDFIELDER” in Jarosik and replaced him with this years Hartley, Novo, Fernandez, Riordan or any other player you can think of who has had a good half season with a provincial club then been signed up to sit on the bench in Robson.
    2. We have signed 2 players who although may have potential will not get any where near the first team anytime in next 6 months. So certainly can’t be dressed up as season changing signings as some people are trying to indicate.
    3. Good piece of business in bringing in samaras on loan I would have been disappointed had we spent money on him just now. He has all the tools to be great signing “IF HIS HEART IS UP FOR THE FIGHT IN THE SPHELL” as he won’t be the first talented player to flop in Scotland as their heart wasn’t in it.
    4. We have failed to address the areas where we really needed strengthen. Cover at left back which we have badly needed for 24 months now and dare I say a Cuellar esc centre half and a petted lip esc centre midfielder.

I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of cover at Left Back. Naylor is the first proper left back we've had since Mahe after all never mind having cover. They are hard to find and I think it shows with the teams around Europe, I think even Barca have been playing Puyol there lately. Mark Wilson will be back soon and can play at left back, some might say he played his best football there.

DBBIA usually the only bet I would do on us is a fun bet like a correct score and first scorer. A couple of reasons.

    1. The odds are usually not worth the gamble.

    2. I TRY to keep emotions out of the betting. As I never bet against us I also never bet the huns to win even if they are a shoe in. Could not take pleasure from us losing or them winning. A lot of real gamblers (I only play at it on a Saturday) tell me im nuts for not taking a sure bet.

With Celtic my logic goes out of the window so if we were to play the Best team in the world I would always think we could beat them.... Oh thats right we did this season

Another way of looking at it is that we've offloaded a midfielder who has never really delivered for any real length of time and replaced him with the 2nd best midfielder in the country (on current form).

It may turn out to be a purple patch but if it doesn't, and Robson performs for us the way he has for Dundee Utd, then he'll become one of our best players.

Don't know much about Hutch but everything that I've heard has been positive.

For all we know Koki could come in and dwarf Naka immediately, walking straight into the first team. Unlikely, but regardless he's still a player with immense potential. The type of player we need to be looking for if we hope to still compete in Europe in the next few years.

Sean- I agree I think willo could be a good player if fit but playing him at left back is just IMHO another cause of square pegs in round holes. I am WGS biggest supporter and trust me where I sit in area 108 I am in the minority but if he does have a down fall it’s playing players out of position.
Riordan, Jarosik, Caldwell, Gravesen, Brown and Naka to name but a few if we are going to see the best of theses guys they need to be playing where they are most comfortable.
Do you think a Rio Ferdinand or Canavaro would look a good player at full back?

Rio Ferdinand could probably do an alright job there actually :P

I know it's not helped players playing out of their position but it's been necessary at times. There are valid reasons for all of the guys you get mentioned as well:

Riordan: We don't play a system that suits him. He was always left side of a three man striker force at Hibs. He's neither an out and out striker nor a winger. I still think him playing as a midfield playmaker on the left is best position for him in this team.

Caldwell: he'd played RB plenty of times before signing for Celtic, but obviously Gordon would rather him playing in the centre but our resources at RB have been particularly stretched.

Gravesen: His best position is in a 5 man midfield and he looks lost in 4-4-2. He mainly played in the centre though which is not un-reasonable. Sometimes he played on the right so to limit the damage his defensive frailties, David Moyes plays him there as well.

Jarosik: I think he deserved to get more chances in the centre; but in saying that, Celtic wingers get a lot of freedom to roam, playing him on the left allowed Jarosik greater freedom to attack rather than in the centre.

Naka: He's always been a wide midfielder. Often played on the left in Italy but he's always been adapt at playing across the midfield. He's been a revelation since coming so playing on the right does suit him. He's plays there for Japan too.

Brown: He's another who is used to playing in a 4-5-1 (or 4-3-3), he'd either play as the right side of the midfield three or he'd play as the right sided winger/striker at Hibs. He's more than capable of playing in the centre or on the right side in 4-4-2 with his best performances this season being in both positions. He's still adapting to the new style clearly though.

McGeady: I know you didn't mention him but a lot of people criticize Gordon for him playing on the left. He's always played as a left midfielder long before Gordon came in. He'd actually played behind the strikers in the youth teams but we can't accommodate that role in our team so he's best played on the left where he gets the freedom to drift in the centre as long as he gets back to defending when we lose the ball.

    ....

You don't have to defend yourself from being called a mineshafter, you're entitled to your concerns and they are valid ones. I just think there are acceptable reasons behind most of the things which people criticise Gordon for.

Guys it is really worth a read of the link at top of the page "Celtic thank people of Barcelona".

Or directly on the celticfc.net website.

I think it is the biggest GIRUY's I've ever read on the celtic web site.

SSM is laying it on thick.

Another step up in my estimations.

    My favourite bit is
“Our fans will be looking to support their team in a positive manner, to respect the city and at the same time make more friends as they always do when they travel.

It as if someone didnt't respect the city recently or something. Can't think who:-)

Still can't help but feel disappointed we never secured a centre half

I am not being negative here, happy with Samaras (who I revealed early in the window Man City had offered to us) koki and hinkel

Robson, wasn't pleased but given we sold Jarosik maybe not as bad as it first seemed

Given that we were consistently told that CB was the top priority to fail to get one is disappointing

Overall I think we have a better squad than rangers tho

I think that is a wise move from SSM, the reports coming from Barcelona are that they are concerned about another group of Scottish people coming over for a drink, they are calling for the police to be tougher on us as a result of their behaviour. This press release does two things: it tells the Barca people that we're not like them, and it also encourages our fans to be on their best behaviour. Not that we ever need an excuse to try and show them up.

I'm a little worried about it, not that we have bad fans; only that it takes only one for person to get drunk and do something stupid for everyone to scrutinize us. The press will be out to prove we are as bad as them, and the police over there will be itchy to prove that they are tough on crime.

Just watched the first half of the reserve game 2 days ago against Dundee Utd. A few observations:

    1) Forfar's pitch is in really good condition - do they not get bad weather or are Motherwell just needing a boot up the jacksy?

    2) A VERY young Celtic squad playing.

    3) A VERY small Celtic squad, do we have something against tall, hell even average sized players? Most atheletes will be around 6ft, not in the Celtic squads!

    4) There doesn't appear to be any star players in the team. Cawley looks like he could be good but is no better than McGowan, Carey has a bit of pace and as always Cuthbert looks decent at the back. Have always though Fox is an excellent keeper but lacks in height.

Even though nobody looks like they shine out they are beating a very tall and much more experienced United side.

Revitalised by Cruyff in the 70´s

I think the biggest issue with the Motherwell pitch is two teams are using it. Historically their pitch has always been a bit iffy and having two teams play on it is making it far worse than normal.

I can't make it myself. Haven't managed an away euro game this year at all. I miss it.

I have a good feeling for these 2 games. Think we'll win at home. Not saying we'll get through but feel we'll make a really good account for ourselves and possibly go out by narrow goal difference or away goal.

    Have a great time.

I agree that the fact that two teams share Fir Park is a problem as the pitch never really gets a chance to recover.

This makes the decision to allow Gretna promotion all the more astonishing.

Fir Park has never had a good pitch and they have games postponed every year, albeit more so this year. In pre season they probably need to rip the pitch up completely and replace the drainage systems. It's shocking that an SPL club can have such a poor pitch.

I think another season in the SPL with no team getting promoted/relegated would have been shocking though. Gretna earned the right to be in the SPL and they are building a suitable stadium it's just going to be slightly late. If they were to survive relegation only to be then kicked out the league for their stadium being a little late (although ready for the next season), that would be more rediculous.

Good news with Puyol - not that I like seeing guys injured, but he is there leader and will be missed (not by me though!)

Regarding Keevins comment this morning that Celtic have bought in bulk, the idiot can't help himself. He is so bitter and twisted that you wonder if he is actually happy in this life. He looks like and acts like a muppet!

Last night when discussing the transfer window with friends I predicted that he would come out with some sneaky comment just to rile you first thing in the morning.

This guy is a complete waste of a pulse. One piece of advice, treat him and the rest with contempt. They don't deserve our time, discussion or space on CQN.

Paul67 Congrats on the continued success of your site, well done.

To All Keep up the great debates but please only discuss Celtic Football Club.

I only saw one tabloid this morning, and as I said, it seemed balanced to me.

Headline was a popular phrase from a TV show contrasting what Celtic did on the last day or the transfer window with what the other mob didn't do.
And a big picture of Robson and Hutch.

    As I say, balanced.

While I agree that parts of the media aren't fans of Celtic, I don't think we should have it pushed to the other extreme.

I have been and given myself a shake on several occasions and now even with most green tinted glasses on I just can’t accept that we have had a successful window. I don’t see where Robson fits in and we have missed the boat again on a centre half and left back.
Its all well and good investing in the future but when we are 4 points behind the filth it’s the first team that needs attention

Shame about the Madrid 1, he would have been some signing. Paul was it going to be a permanent deal or a loan with view of signing?

We also had a substantial bid in for Durica which failed sadly.

It certainly looks like we're in the market for a big pricey European defender. Hopefully we get one in the summer.

I'm not sure how anyone who watches Celtic can say they don't see where Robson fits in. We have perhaps the most unbalanced and unproductive midfield in recent Celtic history who have between them (excluding Naka and McGeady) managed to contribute 7 goals to the cause this season. Robson has scored 12 on his own, he's also now our only left footed midfielder! Aside from the much sought after physical side to his game, he'll bring an additional set piece threat (which we haven't had since September).

Lots of things are said about the defence, even in comparison to the beasties. We've conceded the same number of goals despite almost never having our first choice pairing available.

Left back cover? Well, we have one left back - that's one more than Rangers who do not own one natural left back. They have one right back on their books.

If Wilson gets fit then we have 3 natural full backs to choose from, I would say that's almost unheard of in recent memory.

Motherwell really should be made to get it sorted. Obviously Gretna playing on it does have an effect but it still can't be excused.

I've played at Motherwell and Hamilton back in my boys club days for two cup finals (as well as the 'Strip 4 Scotland' charity launch at the new Hampden), and Hamilton's pitch waas by far the best.

Hampden's was nice but just felt too artificial or spongy... not sure why!

Motherwell was like playing any other game on a decent public park!

Not good enough for the SPL and something should be done about it...

    Rob,

I believe that TB's recruitment policy for the youth set up has been skewed towards how he thinks football should be played.

Nothing wrong with his philosophy if you are running a school team. However, if the object of the exercise is to produce players for the first team, then other criteria have to come into the equation.

Part of the problem, in my opinion, goes back to the last manager who stated, when he first arrived at CP,that he was "not interested in 16-18 year olds", as he "would be dead" when they came through.

I think this gave Tommy too much autonomy in who he recruited.

Gordon Strachan apparently doesn't appear to have been too impressed by what he saw in the youth division, as witnessed by an overhaul of the sector and the influx of young men from all around Europe.

Nothing personal against Tommy, but I don't think he should be involved in football development.

It is a truism in football, as in most sports, that a good big yin is better than a good wee yin.

I agree it is an unblanced & unproductive midfield. But how to sort it ? The concensus seems to be that McGeady & Naka play in a 4 man midfield. Therefore will playing Robson in the centre alongside Hartley/Donati/Brown/Sno improve things ?
