Strachan, Vennegoor Press Conference

I know we have a good SPL record at Pittodrie, but it is a location that always seems to present challenges for Celtic. We are likely to be seven points adrift going into the game, which would leave no room for error.

The big Celtic news from the midweek internationals was the scoring return to the Dutch squad of Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who came on as a substitute with six minutes remaining and scored Holland’s third goal against Croatia.

Holland are not short of strikers, but the goal gives Jan a good chance of making the squad for Euro 2008, something which should incentivise the striker towards a strong finish to the season. Jan is clearly pleased with his recent form. “It has been a good week; a good result midweek and last Saturday, and I hope to finish the week with another win.

“I’ve had my ups and downs [this season]. Some games have not been so good, but you have to continue to work hard.”

Giorgios Samaras is another player with a point to prove ahead of Euro 2008. Greece go into the tournament as defending champions; Samaras is on the fringe of the Greek team at the moment, but a barrel load of goals for Celtic might just tip the balance. Vennegoor of Hesselink has been impressed by Samaras, “He’s a big boy, has great feet and is fast. I like him.”

Gordon Strachan sounded happy with the squad he has emerged from the January transfer window with, “I’m pleased with the squad.

“It’s always nice to have competition.”

Andreas Hinkel has been seen only fleetingly since his arrival from Sevilla, but I expect him to play against an Aberdeen on Sunday. Artur Boruc will also play after training today.

I think we might see Barry Robson in a Celtic shirt for the first time on Sunday, Strachan is clearly expecting big things from the player, “Apart from his goals, he has an aggressive side to his game.”

Nothing that happens in football suprises me any more, but I sincerely hope this particular story is a load of nonsense. From tail of last thread.

On the should we-shouldn't we issue of asking for a postponement, Gordon Strachan will decide, in what will be the best interests of Celtic retaining the title. Nothing else will come into his deliberations.

No thought of "testing" the SPL or showing how tough we are will come into it. It will be a totally pragmatic decision and football politics will not feature in his decision.

The title is the be all and end all of his ambitions this season. Anything else is a bonus.

    Lurgan53,
Graciously accepted in the manner in which it was issued.

I remembered where you worked when we were talking about this. It's got nothing to do with allegiances. It's about the quality of the product and its ability to meet customer needs - same as any other product any other company brings to the market.

What's the demographic on the readership of your paper? I'd be amazed if it wasn't very heavily weighted towards the grey end of the market, with very few young people taking much interest.

You will not attract them as customers with titilating pix and chortle-chortle play-on-words headlines. You will only win them over if you offer them content they cannot get elsewhere.

Are you doing that right now?

    Are you even trying?

Sorry if this sounds aimed at your employer. The original discussion was about media in general and the same questions apply to all outlets, including the very specialist business ones I work on.

Content you cannot get elsewhere ... That's what makes football such a coveted media commodity. The game happens once and once only.

What can newspapers bring to the football party today? Serious question, my friend.

    From previous thread-

If any of you are unlucky enough to listen to Clyde on a Saturday afternoon when games are played- what is it like?... asking each other quiz questions, laughing at each other's jokes "Ha ha, you are on top form DJ", repeating the scores from the telly and talk such inane drivel it makes you want to scream. The very definition of car crash radio. 5 minutes of that *&%$@ is more than enough for me.
And it is not just listeners who think this way- You will notice that there virtually no ads on at that time, their sponsors give this slot the big hipsway.
Contrast the phone-ins- they are punctuated with ads every 10 mins.
If Phoenix Mitsubishi, Tile it All etc pulled their support then that would be the end of it all.
John McGuire of Phoenix-(I assume no relation to Pedro)- I'm sure he is a big Tim, surely he must recognise what they say about our club, players and fans?
If we bhoycotted the advertiser's products and services then maybe, just maybe, Clyde would think again and change their ways.

BTW- I bought my last car a few years ago from Hyndland Honda, not realising they sponsored Skint FC.
After the paperwork was signed and sealed the sales girl said I would be invited to full matchday hospitality at Ibrox- had she said that before the deal was finalised I would have got up and walked out there and then.
Moral here- if we use our heads we do have some power.

PS-Since then HH have been bought by Phoenix.

PPS- they never did send me the invite, lying baskets.

    Wee Gordon Strachan

    They talk garbage.

The BBC Scotland sports website is making a big thing today of 'Doddsy's Predictions' for the weekend games.

    Who gives a flying fig?

They leech off the game. Don't forget we're talking about a decade here.

In a decade's time, wherever Celtic are playing, we'll all be watching, no matter where in the world, paying the club directly.

So you're sitting in a hotel room in Baltimore? No bother. You're combined watch-phone-portable entertainment system will just project the broadcast of the game onto the wall in the room where you happen to find yourself.

Things do change, and faster now than ever. Fifty years ago, the BBC 'lost' the film of the 7-1 game and we could do litle about it. They called all the shots. But they were rubbish at what they did so that's gone and it's never coming back.

Why should tabloid newspapers be spared the same fate?

A game gets played, but you can talk about it, dissect it, analyse it etc until the next one.

Newspapers do that, as do other media outlets, whether broadcast or internet.

If people don't consume the tabs, why do so many people still get so animated about what's written in them.

    They still matter.

I can't help but detect a slight hint of "Ah but tabloids aren't really newspapers are they" in your reference to choice of pictures and headlines.

For what it's worth, I read the Guardian, because I like the crossword.

It's a market-driven business, and while tabs are seeing a down turn, they still generate huge revenues, as you'll probably be aware.

You'd probably be surprised at what kind of story on the front page shifts more copies.

I'm not meaning to put down specialist business publications, but tabloids are still where it's at as far as newspapers are concerned.

I don't know if you've ever worked for one, but I can assure you, that working for one, and having access to research and contact from readers whether happy or unhappy, let's me know a bit more about the challenges facing tabs and the people that work for them.

And yes, I do get stick from people because of who I work for.

Is 3 games in the SPL really going to prepare Paul Caddis for facing Lionel Messi and co in the Champions League?

Pick the best team to win the game on Sunday, if that includes Andreas Hinkel at right back then that's the team I want to see play.

To be honest, the Barcelona tie is a bonus for me at the moment - given we are 4 points behind in the league with the Champions gaining automatic entry I'm totally focused on that.

    Sad but true!

    Celtic_First,

I honestly don't get your point, obviously things change.

I just think it's a bit premature to predict the downfall of the Scottish Football Media.

Who would rather the BBC asked for their prediction? Seems to me, you wont be happy until someone offers an opinion you agree with.

My previous point on opinions still stand. It is opinions and reputations that sell.

When were the BBC calling the shots? What were they rubbish at and what is it that's gone and never coming back?

Of course Caddis did play very well but if he requires games prior to Barcelona then Hinkel doesn't play until mid March. Considering he hasn't exactly played alot of football this season I'm not sure that's ideal preparation for an Old Firm triple header!

I also think McGeady starts on Sunday as does McDonald - could see it being just the Hinkel change actually.

    At last, options!

If it's the Hilton at the end of the Avenida Diagonal on the Badalona side, I think your best bet is to go on the Metro to Catalunya, walk down the Ramblas from there and maybe get a taxi back (you'll have done two sides of a triangle).

It depends how much you like walking.

MVG says 10 minutes, but that sounds optimistic to me. There is a street near there called La Rambla de Prim, but that's not THE RAMBLAS.

There is quite a good map here:

I'm a fan of JVoH. A couple from him on Sunday and we might just have the top 3 scorers in the league. When did that last happen?

I'm coming over next week for a long overdue visit to Paradise. It's been too long.

My last game was JVoH first and he came on and changed the game in a 2-1 win against Hibs. What a day that was. It went like this,

2 pints of stella before the game
Haggis supper (3 pickles) on the walk
JVoH gets the winner in a great game
    Train back to Edinburgh
4 pints of Landlord in the Bow bar
    My Morning Jacket gig
Fish supper on the way home
    Drunk, but happy.

This time I'm bringing the wife. I could be wrong but I doubt the day will be quite so memorable!

It seems Bobby Moore testamonial was in Nov 1970. My mum and dad were at the game (I was only 11 months old so that was my excuse.) They lived in Romford and were driving home with their Celtic scarves out the window when they spotted aload of traffic behind them at a set of lights. Everyone presumed they heading back North and were following them

Aberdeen away on the First Sunday of Lent...... here's a true story which manages to combine the gout, NAFOS, Pittodrie and the Stations of The Cross.

    TWO THREES AND A NINE

This happened several years ago and comes into the excruciatingly embarrassing category of self-ridicule.

I'd been up to the Dungheap with the Craigneuk Bhoys for one of the lateish Sunday kick-offs and had sair knees as a result of cramped seats at Pittodrie and the interminable, multi-bladder-relief-stop journey home in the ramshackle tin can that doubles as our minibus. Canny remember if we won or not but I do remember trying to contact NAFOS on his moby on the way home with no reply from Auntie Bugaria. More drink taken in ML2 then hame.

The following morning my joints felt in bits, knees and ankles felt as if they had bits of gravel in them. Monday morning and I was doing as much chapel as poss for Lent. Got up for the toilet - oh my good Lord, no. Then it dawned on me, just like the glorious feeling you get on waking and you realise it's not a work day. I didny have to get up for 9.30 Mass after all. There were Stations to be had at 12 noon. Kisses from heaven, a long lie and surely adequate time to refresh my aching, gout-addled limbs.

I got the bus down to Wishaw and limped into St Ig's, giving myself a mental pat on the back for overcoming my physical aches and pains for the greater good. I knew I cudny do the up and doon and genuflections so I sat on one of the middle pews wi the nae-kneelers and the red velvety cushions, a wee treat eftir the Grampian granite of the previous day. My bonhomie would be doused in seconds....

Firstly an oul dear appeared avec two walking sticks and drew me the dirtiest of scowls. Evidently I was sitting on 'her' seat. I shuffled my slim and taut backside along but she still surveyed me as if I was a jobby in the Holy Water font...... "whit's a young, strappin man like him dain in oor seats ?".

Minutes later two members of the St Vincent de Paul came headed my way. By this time I was convinced I'd broken some Jesuitical commandment regarding oul dear's seats. Instead (and horrifically) they needed that most of gut-wrenching of donations, A FAVOUR !

" Wid ye mind ringing the Angelus Bell ? "

    " er.....aye, no problem "

like a fool I'd just signed my own death warrant, I was Mick Collins en route from London, utterly doomed.....

    " two threes and a nine "

    " I beg your pardon "

" two threes and a nine. Three peals of the bell - gap - three peals of the bell - gap - nine peals of the bell."

" er.... got ye, two threes and a nine. "

" 12 noon on the button please "

" Evidently, leave it to me "

The Vincey pair departed into the sacristy leaving the gout gargoyle with his onerous task.

    NAE WATCH.

I never ever wear a watch. There's nae clock in the chapel so I'm stucker than a very stuck thing indeed. MOBILE. Get the moby oot, switch it on and I'll have the time to hand. I pull the mobile out and the oul dear looks at me as if I've ransacked the tabernacle - 'what is that fool up to now ?'

11:56, thank God. I limp over to the belfry to wait out the last few minutes. I'm sweating like Spirit of Arthur Lee at Last Orders. Two Threes And A Nine, Two Threes and a Nine, Wiz it Two Threes And A Nine????

    The bloody mobile rings.

Some air-splitting Stations-Of-The-Cross-disrespecting anthem to patriots dead. The oul dear has turned chalk white. It's NAFOS returning my call from the previous night. It's 11:58 I've time to tell him I'll get back to him.........

Seems not. My phone time was slow, the two Vinceys are outside glaring, making pull-bell-rope gestures, 'aye, he's in there talking to his pal' says the oul dear...........

I'd be lying to you if I denied there was a hint of a snobbishness in my comments about the pix and headlines.

My underlying feeling is that tabloids prevent people from confronting and thinking about things that (I think) really matter by distracting them with things that (I think) don't really matter.

    There's the truth of it.

With all the commemoration of events at Munich Airport 50 years ago there has been a fair amount of coverage of what Matt Busby felt about young players. ' You don't know what you've got until you put them in'. So give Caddis his chance- he certainly looks more of a fullback than Aul'Protractor Heid. 300 plus games in the SPL might be insufficient preparation for facing Messi et al, but it's not like the King still plays for them.

In my desk I have a photo of the team that got a great result in the Camp Nou, in the Martinist time. In the wall are Hoopslegends Sylla, Pearson and Varga, along with Stan, Neil and Henrik. Think back to the performance of DMarshall in goal.

    Wee Gordon Strachan

The BBC basically censored footage of the 7-1 because the establishment team took a pounding and it was too much for the people pulling the strings to bear.

That could not happen now. Maybe it's a coincidence that the BBC has lost its control of much of the football coverage in Scotland and England, but I don't think so.

With regard to predictions, it's not a question of their picking somebody else, somebody whose views I agree with. I don't even know who Doddsy thinks will win the matches because I didn't click the link.

There is no point in broadcasting what score Doddsy or anyone else plucks out of the Ayr. It's meaningless.

Inkybhoy talks correctly of there being a desire among football fans to dissect and analyse after the game. For that, I turn to CQN.

While corporations run almost every media outlet anything can and is censored, manipulated and twisted.

    It happens everyday.

The reason the BBC don't have the rights to broadcast SPL/EPL is purely and simply down to money.

There hasn't been another corp around to challenge SKY until Setanta made a wee run for it. ESPN look like making a go of it next year.

But that's just one corp for another. They will still rape you for your money.

On this site,we have a very high standard, in keeping the language used by our contributers, well bound to propriety, and we adhere to the strict ethical code of NEVAH USE A SWEERY WOID..when the english language is so rich in more appropriate alternates.

    Therefore....

I expect that you will honor our wishes in the future.

    And..

Make sure that there will be no hint of any of the Proscribed Woids in your future communications to this singular site.

I could give you a list of the Proscribed Woids I am referring and the objectionable Street Corner Language and phrases, also, if it is your desire...

It's all entertainment now. Surely people don't get their 'real news' from the tabloids???

I believe that to deal with a nascent problem ,by being PRO-ACTIVE, is always the prudent Choice..rather than to deal with the problem in a Re-ACTIVE FASHION...

When in all probability, you have been landed with...a.... wella..... BOIL!

The Scott Brown situation is a case in point.

Now is the time to set the type of parameters, which so far, have been useful in achieving a satisactory amount of success, when acted within, by a young tyro... that includes whether the young man is in the field of business, or in sport.

Advice given must be heeded... and more importantly...applied.

It is evidential that Scott is inclined to be, what could be described at "Hot Headed"....

This, in any walk of life is a severe drawback...and in his chosen field.... this kind of attitude can be very damaging..to his career...and especially to his Performance on the field.

I used the woid "Attitude"... I would be more comfortable with the woid..."Behavior".....

    For ...BEHAVIOR CAN BE CHANGED...
But, sad to say...IN MY EXPERIENCE....

    ATTITUDE... CANNOT BE ALTERED!

I know that my opinion in this matter as stated by me...may not be an accepted one,by some...
However, I shall stand by my findings in this.

    Now...as I was saying...

I have described this young man as having a damaging attitude...

I hope that I am wrong...in using that discriptive term, regarding his general demeanour..

Maybe, he has the much milder afflication...
And is only sporting an inclination towards... BAD BEHAVIOR...
    which,like I've already stated....

    CAN BE ALTERED.

    Time will tell!

Nevertheless, SCOTT needs to be guided and instructed in a FIRM MANNER.

Now is the time to straighten the TWIG.... before it becomes a Crooked Branch!

    Kojo.
yer pal... who knows that Scott must be kept on a very TIGHT LEASH.

If Scott MacDonald is carrying an ankle injury, and has been carrying it for weeks, why did we let him play for Australia? Or is there a kind of ankle injury that gets better while you run about on it? I ask purely in a spirit of enquiry.

    'Tapas

'Modesty is a vastly overrated virtue'

and so it would appear when examining the hottest stove monkeys cooking the latest renditions of the old favourites in this category. Imagine eminem duet ting with will young covering des o'connor classics and you have the food, add some hot reviews in the american press and you have packed out shops full of tourists happy in the knowledge they are eating the latest and best thing. Frig them and their ilk. This is one area where the dollar and Ferran Adria have had too much influence. My advice wander down the Argenteria there is a great little place near Bubo with an amazing wine cellar, really just take a chance otherwise. By all means try commerc 24 if you like hamericans or cal pep but please don't go to Santa Maria any tapas bar with chopsticks on the table....................

the whole piece is actually quite entertaining and insightful !

Good to hear from you on the same subject. Would agree with you about Glenn Gibbons and also Archer up to a point. Always interested to hear what people were told by their parents about this kind of thing because I think it is easy to think we have a monopoly on the bad stuff. My father always used to say when I complained about the referees that it was much worse in the 30s-50s because there was no television, a mainly anti-celtic press and the Celtic people wouldn't challenge things so the MITB could essentially do what they liked without fear of exposure.

To all who have replied to any of my comments, Thanks. As a very recent arrival as a poster, a wee comment back does encourage you to post again.

    The Bobby Moore testimonial.

    Monday 16 November 1970.

The Celtic View carried an article on the front page on 25 November 1970...

    "PLAY FOR ME SAYS GEOFF"

Reaction to this match is still pouring in- from players, officials and supporters.

It is obviously going to be remembered for a long time.

From England forward Geoff Hurst came a request that Celtic go back to London next year to play in his benefit match.

Quite a compliment especially since Hurst had originally intended inviting the West German World Cup team".

and a letter from a West Ham fan...

"This is to thank you for a magnificent display of football at West Ham.

There are not many pure footbal teams in the English First Division.

West Ham are one of the few.

So it was great to have one's faith confirmed by seeing such soccer played by one of the world's greatest teams.

Equally magnificent were the Celtic supporters who appreciated both teams".

    The teams :-

West Ham - Ferguson, McDowell and Lampard, Eustace, Taylor and Moore, Ayris and Lindsay, Hurst, Best & Greaves.

Celtic - Williams, Craig and Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill and Brogan, Connelly and Johnstone, Hughes, Hay and Lennox.

Score 3-3 West Ham (Hurst, Eustace and Best) Celtic (Lennox, Johnstone and Connelly)

    Gordon,
I would have been about 13 at the time of that game and did not see it but heard about it from people who were there. One of my cousins still says it is the best testimonial he has seen.
From my own point of view, from the limited English football we got on telly then, the two teams I enjoyed watching most at the time were West Ham and QPR.
I can only say in my defence that I only enjoyed the way they played football and did not know how QPRankers originated. Now I want them to lose at every opportunity. However back then, I loved to watch players like Rodney Marsh and Stan Bowles. I think both would have graced the real hoops.

    GG's Hamstring,

I enjoyed Martin's reminiscing about the hacks of yesteryear and the names conjured up from the past.

As well as the ones he mentioned, Heron and Harkness, there was also Rex Kingsley in the Sunday Mail, Gair (Ger) Henderson in the ET, Malky Munroe in the Citizen and not forgetting the infamous Waverley in the Record.

Waverley, whose name was Gallacher, not sure if he was the father of the hack known as Ken, had the misfortune to miss his Monday morning deadline on one occasion.

He was scheduled to report on the game at Ibrox on the Saturday, but as he made his way to the ground , he met someone who told him the game was off. He did a u-turn and headed for the pub.

On the Monday he had to file his excuse instead of his usual impartial report on the game, which was, of course, played.

In those days, these guys had the power to make or break a players International career, as the teams were selected by a committee of buffoons. NB.Read Gary Imlach's book, My Father and Other Working Class Heroes.

In the weeks leading up to an International., the press would talk up one player and another, usually ones who didn't play for Celtic, and the SFA guys would pick the team based on these nominations.

On the Monday after the inevitable defeat, those self same scribes would slaughter the team and recommend that some guys should never wear the jersey again.

They introduced the hateful Stars for Merit column, whereby they judged the players performance. Lowest mark was then witch hunted out the team.

To this day, I hate to see numpties assess players in that manner.

For example, Bazza scores 8 every week, even when the game is postponed.

Bad an' all as those days were, gentlemen, I have never witnessed anything as blatant as this season. That is why I am afraid.

Sorry about the long winded post, but I've never been to Barcalona. :>)

The Bobby Moore testimonial. I know it was a superb display of football but regret I have no real memory of the match.

Unfortunately I took a pal from Birmingham that I worked with in London for his first sight of the hoops and insisted that we watch the match in typical Scottish fashion with a half bottle and a can or two. Fortunately we were seated in the main stand so were quite comfortable as we imbibed. Seem to remember a misty night perhaps a little drizzle though perhaps that was the Bell's. Anyway I do remember my mate waxing lyrical all the next day but then as a Birmingham fan he didn't have a lot to compare it with.

    Paul,

I was at the game and I am sure Yogi played centre with Jimmy and Bobby Lennox out wide.

It really was a wonderful end to end game and it looked as if we had won it until Clyde Best scored near the end.

    garygillespieshamstring...

I have always admired the way West Ham play football.

I agree that Bowles and Marsh would have been great Celts.

Another wee interesting snippet from that November 1970 edition of the Celtic View.

Under the heading "Viewpoint" the article "A Sad Affair" dealt with the disgraceful treatment suffered by David Hay at the previous week's Scotland v Denmark game at Hampden.

"Last Wednesday a section of the 24000 crowd at Hampden judged Celtic's David Hay unworthy.

Previously Jimmy Johnstone has been the subject of similar abuse.

Manager Stein reports his players are unhappy at this treatment. Some are not too keen to represent their country.

None the less, Celtic cannot, and will not discourage any player from playing from Scotland".

Thankfully this type of abuse is a thing of the past at Scotland games.

Not trying to open up this debate again - it was given a right good airing back in November before the Scotland v Italy game.

Candid was an odious little upstart of a man. He used to do a bit of match commentary on STV and he didn't know half of the players.

There is a bit of footage kicking about of a pre season friendly at Hampden, around 1967-8 against Spurs and he didn't know one Celtic forward from another.

At the end of his playing career, John Mc.Phail was the token Tim at the Record, but he lost his job, apparently over some irregularity in his expenses. A journo with an exaggerated expense account ? Never.

    PJBhoyNYC,
That is such a great image that I would hate to see someone in the know tell us it was just an urban myth. However if someone could confirm, that would be different.
TTT : I was at the Spurs game in question and watched what I could see from the back of the Celtic end. I have a memory of it being QP's centenary year and Celtic making a donation of what seemed to me to be serious money at the time to help QP with some ground improvements. They duly proceeded to cover the Mount Florida end.
Serious money to me at that time would have been about 2/6, but I am sure Celtic's donation was in the thousands. While it would in no way have paid for the refurb of the Celtic end, it kind of shows the contempt we were held in at the time. I am not convinced it has change. I am sure that if they could get away with it they would still have us standing on an uncovered terracing urinating in beer cans. However we did of course have the bonus of the singing and dancing at our end.

I saw the Cillian Sheridan interview - I hope he decides to stay - unfortunately I can see him going down the same route as Teddy Bjarnasson (I do think it was a mistake to let him go) -as regards to the Caddis/Hinkel - I'd be perfectly happy with either of them in the rt back position - what worries me more is the left back - Naylor.. and.. ??? I know that Doumbe/Hinkel/Wilson AND Barry Robson have played there but is there anyone else.. oh hang on Ryan Conroy.....

    My dear,dear, friend..Canamalar...

You Nomme de Blog is fine.

    Three syllables....but who's countin'!

Yes, indeed your euphemism is spot on... that is more or less the same solution as to what I was driving at, in my reply.

I said, at the time... that my contention that an ATTITUDE PROBLEM was insoluble... would not met with universal agreement...
So it is no surprise, when you distain my pronouncement.

Scott Brown's very demeanour, is what has made him successful, to this point.

So I would be loath to even consider a change in his...Up and at 'em attitude...

    However...
He must learn to take the advice that is given to him daily, by the Celtic Coaching staff... among which, I have a few Personal Contacts...

so believe me when I say this...

Scott will simply HAVE TO TONE DOWN HIS.... YOUTHFUL OVER-EXHUBERANCE!( How kin ye be OVER EXHUBERANT,any way?...ed)( I cannot answer that one... although, ye kin be a LITTLE pregnant...or so they say!... but in reference to Scott's Over Exhuberance... I know that SCOTT manages to be ...Jist That!)

To be perfectly honest...Scott has worked his way into a tight corner, in refusing to pay attention to the aformentioned entreaties.

We can only wait and watch and see, if the penny, in his case, eventually drops...

    And he sees the light.

What puzzles me about Teddy is that he didn't go to a club in a bigger league, even another club in the SPL.

I am convinced that he has the talent and can only think that there is some other reason why he did not go to a bigger club or, for that matter, stay at Celtic Park.

Got to admit that Hartley (in paticular deserves better) - but I do think that on his day Donati is better - any put downs??? sorry comments???

I can understand Kartan's situation. He had a bad injury and O'Carroll and Sheridan kind of leapfrogged him. Plus, watching him on Celtic TV, I don't think he developed sufficiently.

But Teddy? I was confident that he would be a first team regular by the end of the season. He looked the perfect midfielder. Perhaps he lost his way a bit away from the Park, but it is unfair to speculate.

    Cheers guys.

Croydon, I don't think Donati has had enough days that he has been on, so to speak, to warrant special consideration. He tries things more advanced than just the basic pass, which I like, but rarely sees it come off.

Brown too has been sub-par for too many games of late. I think our centre mid has been sorely lacking that bursting energy forward, supporting the strikers, and most importantly, chipping in with a goal or 15. It's crying out for a Petrov type, or a Burley.

Stand up Mr Robson, let's see what you're made of on Sunday!

I don't disagree about Donati, just appreciative of the fact that what he tries isn't getting results too often. Perhaps he's just not in tune with his team mates entirely yet, perhaps that will come and we'll soon forget the shoogly start. I'm not even advocating him to be dropped as a motivational exercise, I don't think he lacks that. I'd just love see a bit more energy in there.

    Thom The Thim,

Them were the days right enough.

I used to avidly read every one of those you mention, but then you grow up and sort of smell the coffee, and you know what, I don't like coffee either.

    Loumacari,

I worked every Saturday till mid afternoon, so never got to the LIVE football.

After work Paul67 and Kevin would come to Hamilton with mum and dad to Capocci's to have our dinner.

At 4.45 we would leave the restuarant and go to Dixons shop window where we would stand watching the results come in on the teleprinter.

Loved those days and while I would not want to turn the clock back, we were so happy and carefree.

My wife used to get mad at us watching for the results, but really her "mad" was more as a sort of "duty mad" rather than a "serious nmad" she would never deprive her bhoys of a Celtic result.

Happy happy days and another memory for the book.

    STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS,

    SFTB,
Tommy G became unhinged just before he signed for us. This was mainly due to the treatment he recieved from the Danish press over his relationship with a former Danish porn star.In my own opinion, a man in his position should have expected this publicity and dealt with it better or else not got involved in the first place. Anyhow, after his unfortunate error(s) at Old Trafford he then had to visit FCK and he let the danish crowd get to his game.He simply tried too hard and lost his composure. That, for me, was the day Tommy G's Celtic career ended before it had even begun. An unfortunate chain of events but, then again, a stronger personality and a better professional would have handled it better.

Donati for me I'm going to put him with sutton, for quite a while I didnt like sutton because I'd see a lot of moves break down at him when he tried IMO at the time too many wee deft flicks and chips which never made it.
I had a big discussion with my wee brother who constantly raved about him and I couldnt see why, anyroadup he convinced me to watch him a bit more closely, so one day I wore my wee brothers eyes to a game and low and behold I seen another player to the one I'd been watching, its amazing how we can view the same player and get a different perspective.
So I've been recently looking at donati with my old sutton eyes and only recently remembered this episode, however Itried my wee brothers eyes again and only seen a slight improvement in donati but enough to give the guy a break.
Its just a pity my wee brother will not take my eyes to a game and give sno another look, seems he never learned as much as me from our discussion.

The difference is that Sutton was a seasoned, battle hardened professional who moved just up the road to us. Donati, on the other hand, is a young man who has moved to a culture, both social and football wise, that is foreign to him. He will come good if we show him patience and encouragement. Of tha I have no doubt.

Reading the posts about the forthcoming trip to Barcelona, I find myself somewhat envious. I was there last time, but sadly unable to go this time.

Especially if you're extending your stay for a few days pre or post match, I'd recommend wandering off the beaten path. We were four companions, not given to over-rowdiness, and found some excellent little tapas bars, where we were welcomed as one of their own. In one such establishment where we spent the greater part of the day after the match, acquainting ourselves with their fine selection of tapas and red wine, our glasses were topped up a good bit beyond what appeared on the bill, seemingly for no other reason than they were happy to have us there (and I think my rusty but passable conversational spanish endeared us further, I managed to find out their favourite colour and directions to the town hall).

In another restaurant, after the match, our table and a couple of other behooped parties were implored to give a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone, met with huge appreciation and rapturous applause.

Wasn't too impressed with the "Irish pubs", however did meet and old bhoy, who spoke to use after sampling rather more than his fair share San Miguel, and the only discernable phrase amongst his drunken mumblings was "Top Cat", which I still use to this day in lieu of "I feel a bit worse for wear".

Enjoy your travellings, and be sure to avail yourself of los conviences.

How I envy your trip to Cape Town at this time of year.
Places to visit, apart from the usual Table Mountain etc.
    Green Point of course.
V&A for shopping or sipping a beer while people or boat watching.
Check out La Perla restaurant on the front at Sea Point. Good traditional Italian served in comfortable surroundings with a big glass window looking out across road to ocean.
Blues in Camp Bay with views across to beach and great steaks.
There was a wee fish and chip tea shop on the beach at Vishoek which reminded me of visits to Portobello, Salcoats and Largs with my mum n dad in the 50s. I just hope it's still there. It's 21 years since I've been in the Mother City. And maybe a few things have changed.
You also have to do the Constantia Wine Route tour, preferably with someone else driving.
A trip round the peninsula via Hout Bay and Chapman's Peak is a must. The views from Chapman's Peak as the road climbs up the cliffs around the bay are unforgettable.
Watch out for the troops of baboons though when you get near the Cape. They'll tear your car apart quicker than a rabid bunch of Rangers fans on a trip to Barcelona.
And if you play golf you'll have a marvellous time.
They used to do evening dinner cruises from Hout Bay up along the coast to the V&A taking in the coastline and city lights. Providing there is only a gentle swell it's a pleasant sail.
Cape Town a city for every taste:
Beach bums, foodies, wine lovers and golfers.
